SpongeBob bfbb rehydrated is a very faithful remake of the original and just like the original is extremely fun, with collectables in every corner of levels, and jokes that will make you laugh.

The highlights of this remake are great, each level has been completely remade and looks amazing and it really feels like you are in bikini bottom. Each level out of the 9 are completely different to each other and lots of thought and care has been put in to it so that the areas are as bright and colourful and immersive so you feel like your in bikini bottom.

The collectables in this game are golden spatulas that open new areas, socks that Patrick have lost witch you can trade for more golden spatulas and shiny objects for the currency witch can be given to Mr krabs for more shiny objects. it is very basic but extremely fun.

But this game is far from perfect, this game has a lot of bugs that can be annoying at times, for example a loud noise that plays when your in goo lagoon, also the further you get into the game you can see that they ran out of time from being pushed by nick and coronavirus. Also I 100% this game and the amount of shiny objects to give to Mr krabs are ridicules and defiantly should be changed.

Overall if you like the original or have not played the original this is a very fun platformer and I would recommend to anyone who likes SpongeBob.

Having had grown up with the original as well as beating it at least 20 times since I was a kid, my expectations were set very high for the remaster/remake. As a huge fan of the original, I am conflicted over this remake for a few reasons. First, and probably the biggest reason is that this game is super buggy. I 100% this game on Xbox one X and during my single full playthrough I encountered more bugs and glitches than I did in my hundreds of hours of playing through the original. While nothing game breaking, camera issues, movement bugs, and clipping through stuff happened enough to make me feel as though this game was rushed. A few things I feel drag this game down are-

1: Robots attack way faster and more frequently, making group encounters very annoying at times. (This may be a personal preference) Hit recovery is also an issue. You can have 3 units of life drained in like 1.5 seconds, which feels a bit unforgiving in comparison to the original.
2: The framerate dips a lot. In The dutchman's graveyard and inside RoboSpongebob I dipped into the 30s and upper 20s on Xbox one X. I feel that this is unacceptable for a game that claims to be optimized for Xbox one X. Also a tooooon of popin. I expect stuff like this on the Nintendo Switch but not Xbox one X. There are a few points in the game where groups of robots will pop in literally 20 feet away from the player.
3: Movement and physics feel off. The player characters feel slow and platforming takes more time to master than it should because of this. The cruise bubble controls are also so horrific i feel it has to be a bug otherwise the developers are crippling the player to make the game seem more challenging.
4: Lot of audio bugs. There are many areas of the game where spongebob will comment on something but continue to repeat the dialogue until you leave the area. There are a lot of simple bugs like this that make me feel as though the game was rushed out without stamping out oversights like these.

As for things I enjoyed, the visuals are very good. I loved the animations during dialogue that make this game feel more alive. In fact, most of the animations are great. This is truly a gorgeous game. The gameplay is pretty much just as engaging as the original. The sad thing is, besides the visual overhaul, everything else about this game is still slightly worse than the original. I keep bringing up the original, but that's mostly due to the fact that the original is still better in almost every single way besides visuals and dialogue animations. Looking beyond my bias and trying to judge the game based solely off what it is by itself I'd have to give it a 7/10. This game is much too buggy to be given any higher score in my opinion. Would I recommend it? Well... Yes and no. If you are a huge fan of the original and have access to a ps2 or gamecube emulator, I'd say just play the original, or better yet if you own the older consoles buy the original. If you want some nice eye candy and some achievements to hunt, sure, buy this instead. Maybe in a few weeks and months once this game is polished I could recommend it to fans.

Giving it a 7 as it has a lot of bugs, thankfully the makers say they are working on patches now. Need to work on frame rate big time. But the game over all is mindless fun. The kind we need in this world climate right now. Liked it more than The Last Of Us 2.

While overall it is a pretty good remake, there are a lot of issues holding it back from getting a higher score. At least on the xbox version, glitches are common, one particular prevents me from saving the game. Meaning I made it to the 2nd boss in one session and trying to get back in the game lead to a reset to Jellyfish Fields. Another problem is the new enemy design, some enemies are harder, and not for fair reasons. I think the most atrocious is the tar tar launcher, in which there is no hit stun after hitting him the first time. So if you try to go in for a second hit, you'll immediately be hit again with no warning. The hoard mode is also disappointing because you can only play it with another person. Meaning if you dont own an online subscription you're locked out of this content without a friend, which seems like a bad design choice. Overall the game seems rushed and holds a lack of polish, including the new movement where it's a lot less fast paced than the original. So that's a disappointment. Some positives are the amazing artstyle, and new tracks. While there isnt much to say since they are straightforwar, they definitely boost this game up. Overall I wish they spent less time on idle animations and more time on polishing the different parts of the actual game. Expand

As someone who played the original over 50 times, this is a serviceable remaster. Now despite playing the original so much I never thought it was a perfect game. I always have just seen it as above average but featuring my favorite western cartoon. Now if you were a fan of the original I would recommend picking it up at $30 usd but if you are just a platformer fan I would wait for a sale.

Very solid game and it really does show love to the Original Game in many ways and the game looks beautiful and plays well BUT there is some problems that can't be ignored with this game that need to be addressed. YOU NEED TO GIVE MR KRABS 108K SHINY OBJECTS IN TOTAL TOVery solid game and it really does show love to the Original Game in many ways and the game looks beautiful and plays well BUT there is some problems that can't be ignored with this game that need to be addressed. First problem is the unnecessary huge jump in Shiny Objects that you need to pay Mr Krabs in the game vs the Original. YOU NEED TO GIVE MR KRABS 108K SHINY OBJECTS IN TOTAL TO GET ALL HIS SPATULAS AND ITS MORE THAN DOUBLE THE ORIGINAL PRICE not to mention grinding Shiny Objects are no faster than the original. It actually is slower cuz in the Original you could exploit the Shiny Objects in the carnival level from Goo Lagoon so if u knew how to do it it wouldn't be a problem at all but this change is not good and it only makes grinding to 100% a bigger pain in the ass than it needs to be.
Shiny Objects are not very easy to get especially at that rate it expects you to do so if u want to 100% it.

Another issue is unnecessary invisible wall blocks EVERYWHERE! One of the best parts of the original was that u could jump on all kinds of ledges and rocks to try and pass the levels in your own way and the only way it would block you off or bring out the hand is if its something you probably cant get out of when u get trapped but in this version it blocks off almost everything that isn't the exact path you are meant to take and it takes away from the playability that the original had when u could find different routes and strategies to play the game your own style and feel free but this remake punishes you for creating your own route that isn't the intended route and it will chase away people from wanting to explore and create new routes to keep them hooks for years to come. If the original was that blocked off then it wouldn't have gotten the following it has today to make this Remake possible so pls fix that.

Another issue is that near the last half of the game level design and everything in general seems like it was more rushed and unpolished than the first half of it by being more lazy and more issues will start to arrive in later levels like perhaps things not working the way they should or it glitches out at times or doesn't work at all. Its still playable yea but its enough of an issue that gets more noticeable as the game progresses on and I feel like Purple Lamp Studios could have gotten it right if they had more time but its forgivable cuz of everything going on like Covid19 and everything else so I understand more but things like this should be fixed in future patches. Another thing is the bungee jump doesn't work well at all and it takes much longer to complete and get all the tikis cuz you barely have any control over where you go and the direction you go down and its frustrating as all hell at times cuz the original was so simple and works perfectly and I could get each one done in like 30 seconds but in this remake it takes like 2 or 3 min at times cuz its ridiculous on how little control you have over it.

Then one last small one is how Sandy's swing mechanics are. They dont feel smooth and it has like a really weird fast snappy effect vs a smoother and more realistic looking swing like the original and it has messed me up with the rope swings cuz of the weird off physics And then you have other little problems that are not that important like most games and obviously the gameplay isn't identical to the original but it still works well overall.
I love how it gives you a nostalgic feel while at the same time bringing something new but still keeping the originals core with a add of a new flavor that just adds to the experience in alot of cases. Is this a perfect remake? No. Was I expecting it to be perfect? No. But it was still a great experience and was fun to play through and did the job I was hoping it would and that is keeping the heart and soul of the original but adding a little pizzazz and flavor to it to spice it up and make it more modern to today's games.

I love this remake and it was a great effort by the developers and you could see the love put into this and that they tried their best to rebuild it from the ground up and not remake it for a quick money grab and I respect the developers for that. Some things could have been done better and I believe can be fixed in patches in the future but anyway I enjoyed this experience and I could see the hard work Purple Lamp put into this. Very solid game and experience. You may run into some problems but my criticism was like that cuz I loved the original and have played the original over 100 times so I can tell what is different so I'm not hating on it at all. I'm just pointing out issues and problems that I hope can be seen and addressed with in future patches.
So I give it a strong 7 to a light 8. Not bad at all. It's very solid and good but could be improved in areas and parts felt rushed. But I'm sure most fans of the last one will enjoy this one as well.
    I recommend it!

The voice acting performances are amazing (besides Mr.Krabs and Mermaidman) and some of the jokes genuinely made me laugh out loud. The music is alright but with some levels lasting up to 40 minutes, listening to the same 1 minute loop of a song can drive you crazy.

Despite being a remake, the game feels overall pretty buggy and there are numerous cutscenes, animations and audio cues that are of a pretty poor quality that really brings down the experience as a whole, such as sound effects being missing completely, or character animations not looping properly.

You could definitely do worse with Rehydrated, if you want a decent 3D platformer to play then give it a shot. It not a bad game at all, but I wouldn't say its as great as everyone made it out to be either.

That just tells me that is nostalgia talking. I say this as a guy that has grown up and played the original countless times. When this game was first announced I was stoked to see a ground-up remake of such a niche little platformer. Now that it's finally in my possession, I did end up having mixed feelings about the whole thing. Where the game was able to make improvements in some areas, it failed to do so with others. It's a shame, because had this game been given more time we would have had something on par with that of the Crash and Spyro remakes.

To get some negative points out of the way, and this is honestly a personal gripe of mine, but it honestly is a bummer that the game did not get re-recorded dialogue and revamped music. I understand the mentality of not wanting to change what people fondly remember, but obviously Crash and Spyro did not have to adhere to that. Much of the game's original voice cast is still with the show to this very day so it wouldn't have been that difficult to re-record the script with them (we could have even had Clancy Brown come back as Mr. Krabs). And while the music itself is perfectly serviceable, it could have definitely benefited from some snazzy remixes to really make it feel that much special. You can even just toggle between the originals and the remixes and that would have been great too. Some of the physics are noticeably different as well, ranging from more subtle things like Sandy's lasso swinging to more blatant examples like a teetering rock in Jellyfish Fields that just refuses to let me jump off of. That's really only a minor problem since that isn't a constant issue, but it's still noticeable. It's also weird how the game is missing certain animations from the original, has far more frequent and lengthy load times and texture pop-in. This game lacks much needed polish, and it feels like it ended up this way just so it could have coincided with the new SpongeBob Movie's original release date before getting pushed back.

Really, most of my gripes primarily stem from a technical level. I have no doubt that a few of these issues can be easily patched out, but I'm going to review the product as was originally sold to me. What this game improves upon is more aesthetics than anything else. Aside from the aforementioned texture pop-in, the game looks super colorful and bouncy, and the redone cutscenes do enough to play like a proper 3-D episode of the show. Areas like Jellyfish Fields and SpongeBob's Dream really benefit the most from the graphical facelift. They even managed to throw in some SpongeBob memes while they were at it because of course they would. While I'm disappointed that the dialogue wasn't re-recorded, it's still solid stuff with plenty of memorable quotes to this day.

At its core, BfBB is a collect-a-thon platformer in the same vein as Mario and Banjo. You collect the macguffins to progress through each area. The controls are still solid, there's some pretty fun and creative platforming challenges with enough variety to keep things from getting stale. Combat isn't all that fun and the boss fights are pathetic, but you're not really playing the game for that. While there is certainly not much special about it from a gameplay perspective, what made the original so beloved was the fact that it was a licensed video game that gave a damn. Finding a solid licensed game at all is a rarity, so for BfBB to reach this level of cult status is a testament to how much the original developers cared about what they were making.

You're level of enjoyment with this game is going to be primarily determined by your attachment to the original. If you have never experienced BfBB before, I recommend waiting for this to go on sale and for some of the extra kinks to get ironed out. If you are a fan of the original, as long as you aren't expecting real overhauls to the core game, then this will be right up your alley. Me, I was certainly expecting much more from this. It feels much more like a clumsy "remaster" than a "remake". It has a nice facelift, but not much else. A solid enough game, but if you still have your original copy lying around I wouldn't trade it in.

An alright remake, the graphics were much better than the original, despite a few dips in FPS here and there on the PS4 version. Most of the fun stems from the original game, however, which is why I only rated this a 5. As a remaster I wanted them to address a few things, like how clunky some of the mechanics are. When I was a kid, I really loved to play this game on PS2. It was one of my favorite games.
Playing Spongebob on PS4 was kind of disappointing, because the game isn't perfect. There are some problems...Even the graphics aren't very good for a PS4 game (many items don't have shadows, for example).
However, "Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated" is very fun to play.

The charm of Spongebob is pretty great no matter where you spread it, though it's doing a lot of the heavy lifting for what would otherwise be something akin to New Super Lucky's Tale quality-wise. Maybe it's the plague of 3D platformer collectathons that we've gotten recently, some good (Crash and Spyro remakes), some not so (Ratchet and Clank), that makes this feel even more average and boring than it likely is. Even still, it is boring, it is repetitive, and Spongebob just rehydrates an otherwise barren wasteland of a world. Expand

THE HORRENDOUS BALL SEGMENT!!! -Such a disgusting, terrible, repulsive level design that is legit harder than playing uncharted on crushing. I lost an hour of my life to this stupid segment. The fact that they legit made this a mandatory thing to do is stupendous.

Das Spiel wird ab ein gewissen Punkt sehr öde. Die Gags fande ich fast alle gut die ich so gehört habe und die Bossfights fande ich leider ziemlich langweilig

Average gameplay and platforming, camera problems in some scenes. Good music and beautiful locations, you can pass once, but not more.

What stands out to me the most though? The considered thought of the level design.

Although the gameplay and character models feel refreshed (Patrick’s limbs are delightfully floppy), the level design pales when compared to newer 3D platformers. Fully remade,2 including a remastered soundtrack, Battle For Bikini Bottom proves to be fun on a technical level, but the barren worlds, many NPCs you cannot interact with, and vexing objectives (the rolling ball in Mermaid Man’s lair, anybody?) make it fun and frustrating in equal measure. Fans won’t want to leave this one at the bottom of the sea. [Issue#178, p.82]

Lots of charm and lots of content, still worth the investment if you’re a nostalgic soul, looking for a fresh dose of bikini bottom action. Some aspects - the amount of texture pop-in, to name one - undeniably feel a bit dated, though.
