    Not so well hydrated after all. So I want to start this review by saying I had such a positive feeling about this game before reviewing it, it looked fun and energetic and everything my younger heart heart could want from a Spongebob game, let me tell you it isn’t.

    The game is definitely tailored to younger audiences even though the original game came out in 2003. I understand wanting to attract a younger audience as Spongebob is a character liked by adults and children alike. However seeing as this cult classic game did come out in 2003, it would make sense to try to tailor to the players of the original too. This doesn’t appear to be the case.

    Firstly I want to say this could just be my Switch hardware, but the graphics of the remaster are extremely poor compared to what the trailers had promised. I know that what was shown in most trailers was PS4 and Xbox footage but I found some Switch promotional materiel and the finished game is no where near as graphically polished as this material. I even had to find a cut-scene online as my game glitched and skipped an early game cut-scene, that was within 10 minutes of starting to play this game and from that moment on I realised my expectations for this game had been far too high.

    The gameplay is interesting for the first 20 minutes and then becomes boring and repetitive the platforming is clunky and uninspired and worst of all are the enemies. There is no extensive variation to the enemies so you continue to use the boring controls with the same combinations to defeat these enemies with ease as most only have one thing you need to avoid before being able to defeat them in 1 hit.

    The Boss battles, if that’s what they can be called also follow the same theme, they have very few lives, making them no challenge at all once you work out how to avoid them once it’s simple to do again. This just adds to the sense of boredom when playing this game there isn’t even a difficulty setting for if you want to try it on a more challenging experience. There are however a few things I did severely enjoy about this game.

    Having watched Spongebob my entire childhood I am very fond of the show and remember lots of cameo appearances and to see some translate into the game was a nice nostalgic trip for me. Also being a fan of the show I cannot fault the soundtrack for the game it reminds me of all of the hilarious episodes I watched as a child and some are stuck in my head since playing. Another enjoyable aspect of the game is the voice acting, with most of the original cast returning it’s a nice continuation for fans of the show, however there is a very noticeable omission, in that Mr Krabs is not the original voice actor and to any fans of the show it’s a very obvious alteration.

    Overall, aside from the actual nostalgia of playing something new in the Spongebob universe there is nothing of note to pull anyone towards this game, and especially if you’re looking at getting a platformer on Switch save up a bit more and buy the stellar Super Mario Odyssey.

    This is a glitch-filled mess of a remake. A lot of the glitches are funny, but I've also had saves fail and save files get corrupted. I've seen people unable to progress or get 100% in the game due to bugs. It's tragic because Battle for Bikini Bottom is a fun game and a great time if you're a Spongebob fan, but you should probably save your money until all these glitches get patched outThis is a glitch-filled mess of a remake. This game looks nice for what it is being a remaster of an old Xbox game... that's the extent of what I can say about this game. The story basically isn't there Planton's robots take over and it is up to you as Spongebob and friends to do something.     The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning, never have I seen a more visually impressive game...BUT this does not counter the disservice that was done to the fan base by its story. I did not enjoy playing this game, it was not fun, I felt as though the developers were seeking such a huge subversion of expectations that they ruined the whole experience.

    Its the perferct Spongebob experience, what else can you ask for? pretty fun game for the whole family with great humor and voice acting. THQ Nordic strikes it out of the park again.

    Specially after all the terrible fiascos with current relases , this game works as a great palette cleanser and a relaxing fun time.     It's not a bad game, it's fun, and colorful, with decent animations and voice acting. The problem with this game is that's annoyingly outdated to the point, where you need to do the same part over and over and over again, because of technical limitations. The limitations that I rarely see in modern platform games (e.g. Ratchet and Clank). It's ok to play, but I wouldn't put it as the first choice.

    And most of the time i didn't even know what to do.

    This game definitely doesn't stand the test of time. Any and all nostalgia is lost due to its nonsensical boss fights and repetitive gameplay. Also visually its disappointing considering it's a remaster. Besides the licenses this game dosen't have much going for it.

    I haven't even played past Patrick's portion of Jellyfish Fields yet, so take this review for what you will, but I have played the original enough to write a strategy guide on it. I know this game like the back of my hand, and I can tell you after a half hour of playing the game that this version is just not up to snuff. If you're looking for a cheap game to keep your kids quiet, this will probably work for you, but it lacks the imagination and creative ingenuity of the original 2003 release. If you're playing it as an adult because you enjoyed the original as a kid, this is most certainly not for you. For my money, I'd honestly sooner buy a refurbished PS2 to play the original game.

    There are already more bugs, oddities, and glitches in the first half hour of Rehydrated than i think I noticed in the entire original release. There are torn textures immediately as you enter Jellyfish Fields, the mouth movements look correct but are out of sync with the dialogue (how does that happen in 2020???), sound effects pop in and out, vibration is coded for SpongeBob but not for Patrick (seriously, how does this happen in 2020???) and several quality of life features that were present in the original are actually MISSING from Rehydrated such as the taxi that takes SpongeBob to each level and the bus for switching characters. That's right. The bus sign still exists and is how you switch between characters, but it just jerks the camera behind the character model and loads the new character model in while the camera jerks around. No bus, no nothing. It baffles me how they could get the game this wrong.

    As well, a few voice actors were unavailable in the original, such as Clancy Brown (the voice of Mr. Krabs) and Ernest Borgnine (the voice of Mermaid man) though their characters still appear and have voice roles on the game. Again, this was par for the course in 2003 where video games just didn't attract the same attention and budgets as they do now. But today, they really should've taken the initiative to remedy this. It's excusable for Mermaid Man, as Ernest sadly passed away back in 2012, though they could've seen about getting someone who sounded a bit more like Mermaid Man for the role. The less excusable exclusion is Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs. Krabs has only a few lines of dialogue in the whole game! There's no reason that they couldn't have called Clancy in to re-record the lines. It likely would've only taken him one afternoon to record them all.

    The gameplay itself isn't all that bad, though it doesn't hold a candle to the modern platformers that we have access to today like Super Mario Odyssey . They didn't update the gameplay from the original 2003 release one bit, and you feel it. It just lacks the creativity and imagination most other platformers that exist today have in spades. Remember how I said this would be fine for your kids if you wanted a cheap game to distract them for a bit? Well, if you actually wanted to ENTERTAIN them, I'd recommend Mario Odyssey, Donkey Cong Country, Rayman, Celeste, or A Hat in Time before I ever recommend Rehydrated.

    Battle for Bikini Bottom will forever have a place in my heart, and I will always love the original 2003 release. But if I had to choose between playing the original or this remaster? Pfft. There's honestly no reason not to play the original. It's worth the $200 to buy an original PS2 for the original release, especially considering all the other classics you'd get to play on the system as well. Sorry THQ & Purple Lamp. Maybe make a better product next time.    … Expand

    Didn't play the original, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The platforming feel really tight and easy to control. The late game challenges are rewarding. All in all a very well rounded collectathon.

    great game but too many bugs to care about i appreciate all the wasted time to platinum this thing i gave the devs plenty of time to address the game breaking spatula glitches and after two updates... shocker folks... not fixed so I fixed it myself by throwing it away. Thanks THQ Nordic. Good job

    The game's visuals are stunning, but the bugs are inevitable. I had been playing this game for like 10 minutes and i have found the first bug. The game has really bad collision. The developers wanted to cram so much into this game that is too overwhelming to the point that is bad level design. I had beaten this game and I can clearly say that it is bad.

    The game doesn't even have invincibility after getting hit. Which means when you get hit by an enemy it just keeps hitting you and knocking you back 10 feet and you'll have to redo sections over and over and over and over again. If you want actual challenge, play something like Crash, which is actually precise and fair. The user scores here are insane.

    Not a great remake, yes it has better graphic and looks amazing but the new animation still look stale, as well as some of the game play. Sliding is no longer fun, the removed certain things to the original (like mrs puffs close up), and the multiplayer is horrible. Yes, if you don’t own a older console this is good to play, but compared to the original it’s bad.

    Although the gameplay and character models feel refreshed (Patrick’s limbs are delightfully floppy), the level design pales when compared to newer 3D platformers. Fully remade,2 including a remastered soundtrack, Battle For Bikini Bottom proves to be fun on a technical level, but the barren worlds, many NPCs you cannot interact with, and vexing objectives (the rolling ball in Mermaid Man’s lair, anybody?) make it fun and frustrating in equal measure. Fans won’t want to leave this one at the bottom of the sea. [Issue#178, p.82]

    Lots of charm and lots of content, still worth the investment if you’re a nostalgic soul, looking for a fresh dose of bikini bottom action. Some aspects - the amount of texture pop-in, to name one - undeniably feel a bit dated, though.
