Skylanders: Trap Team seems intent on forcing players to open their wallets if they want the full experience of what the game has to offer.

An enjoyable adventure, but it’s really starting to show signs of fatigue.

It's a highly focused game designed explicitly to fill up the Christmas list of the child in the household. But it is a well produced game, well above the standards of most children's games, and those miniatures are highly collectible stuff. The kids will love having this under that pine tree.

The revised focus on the new toys can make your previous investments feel disappointingly redundant.

Skylanders: Trap Team brings enough new tricks to keep Activision’s cash cow entertaining for another year, but we sense that there may need to be some more meaningful changes next time around.

Charming and cute with great depth in gameplay. The camera is still annoying, though.

The gimmick is great, and playing as a villain works extremely well, but as a game this doesn’t play as fair or as fun as previous instalments.

Despite its many worthy additions, Skylanders Trap Team is the first game in the series to disappoint me. The new villain characters are charming - seriously, who could hate a floating, magical vegetable named Broccoli Guy? - and the talking portal accessory puts a fun spin on traditional series elements, but the uninspired level design really drags down the overall experience.

Another enjoyable adventure clouded by an ill-judged soft-reset for existing collections everywhere. [Christmas 2014, p.73]

The inclusion of playable villains does just enough to prevent a tried and tested formula from turning stagnant, but with Disney Infinity and Nintendo's Amiibo amping up the competition in the toys-to-life category, future Skylanders titles may have to do more to cement the series' position as market leader.

Knowing what I know about the series thus far tells me that Trap Team will remain a solid product and gift for any child with video games in the living room.

It's pretty much what you've played before. [Dec 2014, p.83]

While Toys for Bob, the makers of this years Skylanders game have taken all the great changes that Vicarious Visions brought to the seriesWhile Toys for Bob, the makers of this years Skylanders game have taken all the great changes that Vicarious Visions brought to the series with last years Skylanders Swap Force, they have sadly not been able to keep the high quality of last years release.

The first and most important thing is that the figures are lackluster, and there are only a few figures that is somewhat interesting. On-top of that, the most interesting of the figures are not in toy versions but trap monsters, meaning that you get some dull crystal and not a cool toy that you can play with as well.
The addition of minis is great, but they are just 100% exact copies of their normal sized version with a high pitched voice.

Last years release almost felt like a animated movie all way through, with great voice acting and animations, and while the voice acting is great this time around as well, the animations are very stiff and it seem like they handed over that job to some interns (its very bad).

The level design is in most parts great, with the great art style of swap force. The hub is much bigger and better than Skylanders Giants, but it randomly introduces new areas that you cannot enter or are empty, without telling you what they are for or what you need to use them, so you spend a lot of time trying to find things to interact with that simply doesn't exist yet.

The biggest turn off (and the reason for this score) is that multiplayer is UNPLAYABLE. I only buy the skylander games for multi-player with my kid, and the last 3 releases have been great for this.
This time around every time someone dies, the other person dies, you are constantly being teleported to each other and that also causes deaths, and as you get too far from each other you get a rubber-banding effect that causes deaths as well. Its frustrating and we are not playing together, but in turns because of this.

All in all, if you are looking for a game for your kids to play, or you to play with your kids i would recommend that you skip out on this years release. If you are new to the series you could buy last years Swap Force, that is not only a better game but also at this point in time much cheaper.
