Having never played the previous releases, I was really looking forward to find out what the fuzz is all about and, after 16 beaten colossi, I still don't understand it. So, 6/10 is even a bit stretch...

“But the camera keeps banging into cliffs ?”

“It’s had two joysticks since 1997”
“Moving on … finally we had a request to redo the motion capture for the character running – we received comments it looked the run you do when desperate for the toilet and finally see a toilet in the distance”

I was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I tried to look at this game only as art. It helped to make me finish this game, but when I was trying to enjoy shadow of the colossus, it just felt forced. Did not have fun at all and not even breath taking visuals of environment and beautiful yet scary Colossus did not change the fact, that II was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I give this 10 for art, and 2 for game, one of my biggest disappointment in video games, maybe I missed the whole point or I just cant enjoy game for its good looks and I need something that drives me to feel for the characters in its world. I give it 6 only because most critics love it and it makes me feel like I cant see what most of you can, something to be impressed about...what a shame.

7/10 is a good game for me. Not bad, not very good.

Obvious things: this game is beautiful. Period. This game is different than most of the games on the market. Open question: does 'different' mean 'good' by definition?

Sadly, I've found this game quite boring. To reach the Colossi takes 10 minutes of very-nice-views-but-nothing-more. To beat the Colossi it's either directly-obvious-what-to-do or frustratingly-non-obvious. The difficulty level is uneven and I've found some middle-Colossi to be the most challenging.

The story is virtually non-existent. For ~8h of play there is nothing. The ending is open, which is cool when you have observed character development for x hours, but with no background it makes it even more empty.

Some reviews point to the "uncomfortable feeling when killing innocent Colossi". I kind of missed that as well.

It's a nice game, but it's far from 9.0 score.

If you are looking for "something completely different" but "with deep story" and possibly "for mature people" I highly recommend "Everybody's gone to the Rapture".

So first I'll concede that the game is bleakly beautiful, atmospheric, sad, mysterious, and all the other words reviewers have used in their ecstatic paeans to its apparently undeniable brilliance. It's all those things, yes. And the remaster is astonishing: it's now one of the best looking games on the PS4, not just artistically speaking(because it was always beautiful from an artistic standpoint, even back on PS2), but technically speaking too. The detail, the textures, the animation; it's all fantastically impressive, and frankly light-years ahead of anything Team Ico have ever done, including The Last Guardian. The fur on the Colossi is particularly lovely. Makes you want to grab a hunk of it and bury your face in it.
It's a unique game, and it's been extremely influential too - this can be seen in the number of developers that have incorporated 'colossi' of their own into their games(even the great Nintendo paid homage with the four Beast-dungeons in Breath of the Wild.), or the reach of the tonal aesthetic of the game - the relentless use of SotC's muted palette in so many subsequent AAA releases, a kind of bleached, muddy, grey-brown look that arguably influenced the look of games as different as Gears Of War and Killzone.
It's an atmospheric game, but in many ways it's not entirely enjoyable to play - there is a loneliness to it all, a sense of crushing solitude that remains unbroken throughout. The hills, the mountains and rivers, lakes and seas, have their own looming presence, like they're watching you from a distance. It's slightly spooky to wander a land in which almost all life, certainly all human life, is absent. A few scurrying lizards and the occasional bird are all you'll see, besides your horse and the colossi themselves. I personally think it requires a reasonably happy mindset to play it. I wouldn't want to play it at a low moment that's for sure.
But like I said, after all the positives there is one issue that comes close to ruining the game, and it's not just a problem in SotC - all Team Ico's games suffer from it: The controls in this game are appalling. I've been playing The Last Guardian recently and the controls in that are probably slightly worse, but in tLG at least you're not tasked with anything too demanding or finicky. In SotC however, you are required to climb the colossi, and jump back and forth between parts of their body, all while hanging on to particular handholds, all while your stamina meter gradually dwindles away, at which point you drop to the ground. There are platforms located on the colossi at certain points, but the motion of their movements tosses you into the air and sends you flying around in unpredictable ways. Having fought the third colossus(MILD SPOILER), a huge figure who smashes his sword into the ground allowing you a moment to scamper up it and grab onto his lovely fur, I fell to the ground so often, and generally for no reason except the appalling controls. At one point, after I'd almost killed him, I was attempting to get back on, and the tremor from a single footstep knocked me to the ground. At this point, and for no apparent reason, it takes ten seconds for me to get to my feet, during which time the colossus has lifted his sword and smashed it down onto my tiny frame, killing me.
The game is full of moments like this - inexplicable moments of frustration, a commingling of bad game design and bad controls, and it's gotten to the point where I can't just shrug it off and say 'that's Team Ico for you'. It shouldn't be like that - they've had so long to get the controls in their games right, and even after the insane delays to tLG it somehow handled worse than their previous games did. This remaster is brilliant in so many ways, but the most important thing that could have been dealt with has been left intact, and it suffers for it. I don't blame Bluepoint for not dealing with the controls - it would have required extensive reworking of the actual game's structure and even the environments and colossi themselves, because the controls are so integral. And the admittedly beautiful animation wouldn't be half as beautiful if the controls had been rejigged to make them responsive. In fact, I think that's the reason the controls are so bad - Team Ico are obsessive about animation, and the length of the animations in their games precludes responsive controls. In this sense they've put the beauty of the game ahead of controls, and there's only so long they can keep on doing it before people turn on them.
It's no longer acceptable, and there's no reason you can't have a beautiful game that handles well. Uncharted manages it. SotC doesn't, and for that it deserves more criticism than it's received. It's wonderful, unique game, but no-one should go into it unaware of just how bad it handles.

    + Wonderful soundtrack
+ Best looking game ever made for PS4 (my opinion) + Decent minimalistic story + Wonderful overall world feeling + Very nice concept. Cons: - Terrible camera and controls, especially when riding a horse. Few battles felt like fights with camera, not with colossus. - AI bugs. - Basically no replay value (each fight is always done the same way).

SoTC is a good game, but the core gameplay is pretty shallow if you ask me. You beat the game once and there is basically no reason to play it again since there is only one tactic per a boss. Still, I would recommend it because it's a decent game and it's pretty cheap.

Emperor's New Clothes. Wooden characters. Terrible controls for the the horse; your means of navigating a lifeless world, a barren expanse to flesh out the time between each boss fight. The camera is awful and can be nauseating on a large screen, especially when navigating large open spaces. Actually the whole thing is a bit depressing, maybe that's what makes this a Masterpiece for some?

If you are going to remaster can't they have fixed the following gaming problems from the 00's which are just crappy not retro.

    - Bad camera
    - Clunking unresponsive controls because the character has to finish the animation it's doing before you do something else
    - Controllering your horse with tank like controls!
    - Waiting and waiting for the AI in boss battles to do what is meant to be doing for you to progress
    - Pretty but nearly empty open world.

It's retro I get it, but scores like 9.7/10 on IGN ridiculous. If this came out from some unknown dev and wasn't a remake it just wouldn't get anything like that score.

The camera swings around wildly, making it difficult to steer the horse in a straight line, gaining and losing speed is arduous, and just nothing about point A to point B made me think wow.

There were several bosses where the events would not trigger properly; one particular boss towards the end of the game tells you to get to higher ground. After baiting the boss into hitting pillars maybe 20 times, the event finally triggered, and a way opened up for me to progress the fight. This was of course after I’d exhausted all other options, as the event hadn’t triggered the first time I tried; it’s deeply dissatisfying knowing your initial solution was right, but the game hadn’t responded to your actions.

Unless you have a deep set love for this game, I’d recommend giving it a miss. I’m not thoroughly convinced I should’ve bought this game, never mind for £30. You can get bigger and better adventures for less money. The developers failed to change the shortcomings in light of modern technologies and progression, and ultimately produced what feels like at best the concept for a game. It doesn’t even seem like the best version of itself.

Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
