Hadn't played the original, so first time experience on PS4. Finished the game now. The game is somewhat similar to the Journey, in that the artistry and story depth is quite transcendental. Music and feel-wise top-notch, although not sure it deserves the top ratings as of 2018.

Expand

TL;DR - Buy it for the beautiful visuals and music. Don't pay full price unless you're a true fan of Team Ico or Bluepoint Studios (the team that remastered it - yes, they are pretty amazing).

Yes... that is, unfortunately, the first thing anyone looking to buy this game needs to know. You will beat it, and you will beat it fast. Fast on Normal. Fast on Difficult. (Don't bother playing it on Easy unless you've never held a controller before. It's really not worth it then, especially at $39.99.)

I am giving this game an "8.2/10" because I got it at half-price, but that's still not it's regular price, and the price of remasters should always be a part of their judgment.

Of course, it really is a BEAUTIFUL remaster with visuals rebuilt from the ground up. I can actually watch Wander on his trusty steed Agro, and say to myself, "THIS is what Never Released Zelda WiiU title would've looked like if Nintendo had gone forward with that Tech Demo from 2011." When I sat down and saw Wander carry Mono into the Forbidden Land, I thought I'd purchased the wrong game, despite my memory knowing this was the same game. That's how beautiful it looked.

But back to the main point. This game is SHORT. Because many things were fixed - especially that frustrating grip mechanic. The game is not nearly as frustrating as it once was (even on PS3), and can therefore be beaten in less than 10 hours. These days, that's a very, very short game. Like "No Man's Sky, what the hell is this?" kinda short.

Also, the many photo filters are wonderful, but I didn't really understand what the point was of hiding some of the bonus content behind beating this or that Colossus with different filters. It really was a strange decision, I feel. However, if you're the kind for it, and if you really want to challenge yourself, apply the Night filter (bring the slider down till it's really dark), put the game on hardest difficulty, and enjoy. No headphones though! You wanna make sure you only see their eyes!

Music is as beautiful as ever, but on a better audio system this time, and I'll never understand why Kow Otani didn't also do the music for Last Guardian (which I personally thought was lacking in emotional substance most of the time due to clunky-ness AND music).

Conclusion: See TL;DR above, and possibly add to that: This was the last Team Ico game that was ever released (rereleased?), since they never finished Last Guardian, someone else did. SO... buy it for the feels?? Who knows!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You play as Wonder, a young man tasked with killing 16 colossi to resurrect a girl. These colossi populate the forbidden lands, a grand, lonely expanse you traverse alongside Agro, who is both your horse and sole companion. Despite some pop-in, the game looks consistently excellent from the environment to the designs of the colossi. The colossi are huge, haunting figures, and killing each one plays out almost as a series of puzzles. You have to figure out a way to exploit the individual weaknesses of a colossus, and this is usually quite fun but the specific method of killing one can be too obscure at times. Although you're given a hint or two to keep you on the right track, figuring out what exactly the game wants you to do can be a bit frustrating, especially as you often have to goad the unreliable enemy AI into certain actions before you can take them down. This was my first playthrough of the game and I often found myself unsure as to what I was supposed to do.

When you do manage to take down a colossus though, and everything works as intended, the game feels epic in scale and you're treated to some fantastic music. The music in Shadow of the Colossus is great and helps to maintain the sombre tone of the game.

On the whole though, the core gameplay loop is solid - you're told your next target, you find them, kill them, and move on to the next one. How you find the colossi is quite smart as well. In a well-lit area, you raise your sword and point it around. When you point it in the right direction, a beam focuses on your destination. I liked this, as it felt more interactive than just following a waypoint or a minimap. No minimap means the game can do away with the HUD when you're not in combat too, so you can better take in the visuals. Getting to your destination is no trouble either, as your horse is speedy enough and exploring the world is decent fun.

It's just a shame that playing the game can be annoying in places. In addition to some of the fights as mentioned above, the controls, and the way the camera fights against you in particular, are frustrating. It's not terrible, and you've kinda gotta just accept that the camera has a mind of its own and let it do it's thing. It gives you some nice angles at times, but at others it makes you stare at the floor. Using the left trigger to focus on a colossus in a fight helps alleviate this issue a bit. The controls while climbing are also a bit iffy. It can feel temperamental, glitchy and like you're not in control.

Overall though, this is a great game with a solid, somewhat emotional ending. The ending didn't take me completely by surprise but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Although I think Shadow of the Colossus is great, I also think it's plagued by some issues that perhaps stem from it being a remake of an older game with antiquated design sensibilities. Regardless, what is mostly a beautiful experience is marred by some frustrating elements.

But as much negativity that many remakes get or the whole concept of it at all is, this title deserves to be a little better each time.

Shadow Of The Colossus is for one an atmospheric game. Where the player are thrown into a mythical fable, a vast fantasy world, large colossi monsters and very little else. I don´t really get other reviewers comparing it to games like The Witcher, and other fantasy games. They have NOTHING in common with them. The game's philosophy and execution is not even comparable to anything. Probably The Last Guardian, but it is by the same developer.

Bluepoint kept the basic concept and it´s main focus: You (the player) vs the Colossi´s. They did not ad much in to "fill it up", but kept the artistic integrity and the focus the original makers made it to be. There is little around you to take you away from the main story of the game. No collectibles (well a little, but totally unnecessary) or sidequests. And that takes skill to make something like this.

Trough your whole journey, learn to suck up the amazing scenery, the sixteen epic boss fights and the story of one boy´s fight to save his sweetheart.
Not much more to say about it. The juicy controls could be better probably, but it does not feel too troublesome.
A true arthouse of a game and a magical classic that is very faithfully preserved in this third remake.

But when you get past the first colossus or two and you get into the rhythm of things Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most memorable games to come out in the last 20 years; every person who has played the game will have their favorite colossus and will carry their memories for years to come. And after two prior attempts at making this playable on previous systems (and almost succeeding on the ps3), this has got to be the definite version as it removes minor inconveniences that would annoy most any player, and adds extra tidbits for anybody wanting to spend more time with it.
And most importantly... It actually runs at a stable framerate for once (not necessarily 1080p 60fps but it is very playable at 30 fps as it used to run at 18 fps on its original release in 2005)

Fantastic game, and a masterful remake of an absolute classic.

Firstly, for the naysayers, and haters. The landscape in this game is not baron, it's artistic. Whilst this is subjective, the game was originally designed to be marveled at, and to enjoy the open landscapes. I remember on PS2 being blown away by how vast the expanding scenery was, and gave the world an ethereal feel to it.

This version of the game built on the back of that, and certainly delivered. The world feels magical and pulls you in to its mysticism. If it doesn't for you, then that's just an inability to appreciate the great atmospheric conditions provided by the developers.

The controls, were a bit tricky at times, which is why I took a point off, but they are by no means horrible. I was able to ride the horse fine without any real problems. Most of the time you're in open fields galloping, this is done purposefully to enjoy the view, and appreciate the world you've been thrust into.

The collosi are just, well, breathtaking. When you see them lumbering around, you really feel small and vulnerable, but at the same time, I feel a certain sorrow for them, I can't really explain it, it's just the way the game is cinematically presented to you.

The soundtrack only adds to the depth of the experience, and I remember the game as fondly as I did when I first picked it up on release for PS2.

To Summarize: If you have appreciation for more than just material content (I.E a million quests to do), and enjoy an artistic, and atmospheric experience where you fill in your own agenda with your imagination, then this is a title you will thoroughly enjoy. If however, you're not someone who can appreciate video games as an art form, or have little to no patience, then you're probably best avoiding the game. For most people this is a unique title, that very much deserves its praise, and I'm happy it's been made available for the next generation to enjoy in all its magnificence.

Big fan of SotC here who lost the fight against "common sense" and bought this game for the 3rd time!! haha!!

I wanted to come here to make a point on the game from a NON PS4 PRO user.
Seeing all the reviews and most of the previews being released shown for PS4 PRO, comparing the "performance" and "Cinematic" modes and all, got me a little worried on how well (or bad) the game would run on an Old, Vanilla, PS4 which is almost 4 years old now!

Well I gotta say I am impressed and count this game as one more game that DOESN'T convince me to get a 4K gaming grade TV and a PS4 Pro!
It runs very very VERY well even on regular PS4.
I tought I'd feel an urge, a need for 4k/PS4 Pro some time sooner or later but Sony seems to refuse to "lowball" us and make us feel like we HAVE to upgrade to actually enjoy current gen games!
To me, 4k/PS4 Pro right now could be considered like "Icing on the cake" which despite being enjoyable just doesn't feel smart if you're a bit tight on money!

Of course it won't support HDR, there'll be a little more aliasing but it's barely noticeable unless you get very very finicky about it!
So, all in all, I just downed 2nd Colossi and I'm enjoying it!

As for the game and the "remaking", somehow, I think there was a greater difference comparing the blurry and choppy PS2 graphics to the PS3 remaster than this remake here...
I may be wrong tho, it's been a while since I didn't play the game but in my memory, it seems like the PS3 version was already looking pretty good.

This PS4 remake isn't as jawdropping as let's say some very MAJOR remakes like the 1st Resident Evil which the total remake made it look like a totally different game...
It's a considerable rehaul but when taking Resident Evil in comparison, it is a little weak and underachieving.

    So, overall I'd give it a 8,5~9.0...
I wished they would've added some stuff since they sold us the idea that a "Remake" should be so much more than just a "Remaster".

No matter what, we want a Sequel to this or a game of the same genre!
In the meantime, I'll get back to it!

    Enjoy!

With Nintendo Switch Ports (which is basically all the Switch is) you pay SIXTY DOLLARS, you get a game that can barely break 720p on a cheap overpriced screen. For FORTY dollars you can get a game completely overhauled for a new generation at the reasonable price of $40.

Not sure what the mixed scores are all about. This game is perfection in every possible way.

Lots of people criticising the controls. Others say the story is shallow. I say poppycock. The story is precisely what it should be: a simple plot, told in the best possible way and almost without words, purely with the emotions of the player. The controls take some time getting used to, but

Every 5-ish years a game comes along that might just alter your view on video games as a whole. This is one of those games. How many others even have this potential?

    Don't pass up on this.

Shadow of the Colossus can be best described as a "boss rush game". The objective is to defeat 16 Colossi, ranging from bull-sized to titans standing 30 meters (100 feet) high, or giant creatures 200 meters (650 feet) long. There is an open map which you have to explore, with your magical sword guiding you to each Colossus after 5-10 minutes of traversal, but in-between there are no enemies of any kind. Each Colossus is a platforming puzzle you have to solve, with most Colossi featuring literal platforms on their body, and you defeat them by stabbing their weak points.

Bluepoint Games took the original game and remade all the graphics from the ground up. You can play the game at 1080p and 30 fps on the base PS4, but on PS4 Pro you can choose between 1080p and 60 fps or 1440p and 30 fps. The gameplay and AI behavior have been left untouched from the original, for better or for worse. Shadow of the Colossus can be beaten in ~6 hours, and even less than that if you already know what to do.

Shadow of the Colossus and its predecessor Ico paved the way for the rise of many artistic games with a minimalist narrative, left open to interpretation by the players. But unfortunately Bluepoint Games chose to ignore Ico altogether and didn't remake that one, too. Which is a shame because it's my favorite of the two. Still, I recommend anyone to play Shadow of the Colossus.

What a game. I must say, I wasn't expecting a lot of this game, and I got my money worth. My only complaint would be the horse's controls, they were awful. Otherwise, the gameplay was great, graphics were amazing, story was simple but very touching. Each boss battle was masterfully created and the puzzles were fair enough. Loved the ending. Overall, a little short but worth every penny. Solid 9/10

The only thing that the graphical overhaul removed was my nostalgia for the original. Which is a good thing. That ending is also one of the saddest endings I've seen in a video game. JUGABILIDAD:

A sprawling, open world where your only objective is to defeat 16 mythical Colossi that roam the land for your own personal gain. It was lauded for its technical prowess, the bosses themselves, and served as a prime case of video games being seen as a form of art. The game had its fair share of issues, and it certainly wasn’t for everyone, but it’s just so wholly unique in its presentation and design that you can’t help but at least admire it. 13 years later, a ground-up remake of the game was released for the PS4, and for my money it is the definitive version of this classic.

Of course, the most obvious improvements are found in the game’s presentation. The game looks positively gorgeous. Each environment in the game is pain-stakingly recreated with modern textures and graphics, and the Colossi look even better than before (and they already looked great on the PS2). It all helps to fully bring out the best of the original’s stellar art design. The main character Wander does look a tad off though, mostly in his face. The game also runs considerably smoother than originally, as the PS2 release was really pushing the hardware to its limits, and you have the option to sacrifice some visual fidelity for increased framerate. The orchestral soundtrack has always been one of the best parts of the original and remains pretty much untouched. Music isn’t always present though, as it only appears when it absolutely needs to. It can range from being haunting and beautiful to bold and grand, perfectly suiting each moment.

The core gameplay remains the same as the original, but with some much needed tweaks. As mentioned, your goal is to kill each of the 16 colossi in this forbidden land in order to bring back the one you love. With the help of a mysterious voice, your sword and bow, and your trusty steed Agro, you set off to do just that. Aside from killing a few lizards and eating some fruit in the over world to increase your health and grip, killing the colossi are the only thing you’ll be doing in this game. You’ll be using Agro to travel around from one point to another, and using your sword to help you navigate. This is one of the reasons why a game like this would be a hard sell to your average player. You can easily view this as being barren and dull, but given the core themes of the game and the context of the type of land you have trespassed on, adding other people or things to do would be a detriment. The world itself is artistically beautiful, and it instinctively makes me want to explore and soak in my surroundings.

Now let’s talk about the colossi themselves, as they are the real meat of the game. While some are considerably smaller than the others, most live up to their name exceptionally. These are not mere sword fodder for you to mindlessly slash at. Each colossi has a puzzle element to them, having weak points on different parts of their body, and half of the challenge comes from simply figuring out how to get on them and finding their weakness. If you take too long, though, the mysterious voice does offer hints. Once you do, it’s a literal struggle to hang on to them for dear life while they attempt to fling you off. Each colossi has a creative method of getting on them, and once you do and that glorious music kicks in it is absolutely thrilling. It does help that the controls in this version have improved a bit since the original, namely its control scheme. The original options are there for those who prefer it, but the revamped scheme feels so much more natural. Wander is easily prone to tripping and falling, though, so you’ll need to take that into account. Your horse Agro behaves rather realistically, and when traveling through narrow passages she usually does a good job of navigating through them automatically. The game also features a photo mode because every major Sony release needs to include one, so if you are interested in that it offers a good amount of features.

Shadow of the Colossus was an incredible achievement on the PS2, and its staying power and legacy continue with the PS4 remake. If you have ever been curious about this game, or are just looking for something different, this version comes highly recommended.

There is an atmosphere of sadness and beauty in this game that leaves you thinking about it long after you've put the controller down. Could it be longer? Yes. Could there be more variety to the gameplay? Sure. But this game is unapologetic on what it is, and that's sort of the reason why it's so special.
It's the first time I really caught myself having to re-evaluate the fact that i can't judge something based on what i wish it was, and instead accept it for what it is. And if you do that, you're in for a very special ride.

I never planned on paying for this game, and only picked it up for free in March, but I was greatly surprised. I now fully understand why this game is adored. The camera is pretty unresponsive most of the time and the bow play is very slippery. Other than some frustrating moments with the AI, this is a masterpiece game and defiantly deserves the love. This game was incredible, it made me feel the beauty of the game world as if I was watching through those eyes of the first time on ps2! Truly an excellent remaster, true to the original spirit and marcelous to look at!

However, everything else in this game is stunning. Shadow of the Colossus is a clever inversion of the trope of giant slaying; something normally seen as an impossible, valiant feat. Yet here, it's this horrifying, dreadful task. Your own self interests lead you to slay these innocent beasts, most of which don't attack you on their own will. After defeating one, the game gives you a breather, almost to force you to reflect on the egregious action you just committed. The point where the final colossus looks at you, seeing its enemy as a living, breathing thing is just magical. If you're looking for a collecta-thon with tons of enemies, bosses, etc, this game isn't for you. Shadow of the Colossus is a truly transcendent, beautiful work of art that anyone can pick up and empathize with Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolutely great remake. Visually gorgeous, it retains the spirit of the original.

Shadow of the Colossus tells us the story of Wander, one man ready to risk everything in order to save Mono, whose fate is told to be cursed and who had been sacrificed because of it. Wander travelled to forbidden lands with his horse Agro, where lives a godlike entity, Dormin, able to revive dead people, in exchange of one service. Destroying 16 idols, each of them corresponding to one colossus. As a player, you have to defeat them all.

To do so, you have to find them first, in these open yet empty lands. As a gps, you have your sword, who reflects light towards the next colossus. Once there, you'll have to think on how to climb on them, and stab them to death in their weak spots. Colossi are not bosses, but levels, puzzles, that you'll have to solve in order to vanquish them. The plot is very simple, it is a remaster of "the hero going to save the princess from the dragon", but it is told very efficiently, with a simplistic yet strong narration, and a few more subtleties. Each colossus death feels like a murder, the death of something greater than you, who fell because of an egoist desire. One frag brings more sorrow than joy. The game ends with an masterpiece of a final scene, which deserves to be played / seen once.

The soundtrack was one of the best ever made in a video game, and still is in 2020. Grandiose, in perfect harmony with the epicness of the fights. A classic.

Like each of Fumito Ueda's games, it plays oddly, like almost nothing else. Wander is weak, vulnerable and has little balance when on colossi, Agro might be tricky to control, as you're not controlling directly the horse, but the rider controlling the horse. Gameplay choices, made to make you have a more complex feel of what you're doing, instead of creating fun and accessibility.

Probably not everyone cup of tea, but one very beautiful example of video game as art. If you're ready to put aside nowadays codes to play an old game who was bizarre even 15 years ago, go for it, it will most likely worth it. A great experience.

Camera do suck tho. But I never find it that constraining as some can say, whether it was in the original or in this one.

Expand

This game is a masterpiece. SImple. Everything is amazing about it, the story, the colossi, the characters, the gameplay. Though the camera is bad and the controls are questionable. And the physics aspect of the game makes climbing the colossi very wonky and frankly more unrealistic. But i will still give this piece of art a 10/10. Would give it 100/10 if i could.

Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
