Excellent game, few daft bits too the story which hold it back from being a 10 for me personally, but altogether a really enjoyable and addictive for me.
A little short for me aswell, wish it was more like the length of TLOU2 but I was really looking forward too this as have been playing since the original on ps1. Solid entry!

A nice blend of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 4. The game is less scary than its predecessor and more action-packed. This was the best resident evil game I've played since resident evil 4. It takes a lot of what I thoroughly enjoyed from 4 and from 7 and makes it a unique experience. It definitely has its flaws here and there, but it makes in comparison to everything that the game does right. I highly recommend this to anyone with even the slightest interest in the series.

Aside from very few fps drops on PS4 SLIM, this game rocks! It's action packed, with horror themed locations, and various inspirations on classic horror titles. Mercenaries mode it's really good and entertaining! Worth a full price, worth various playthroughs.

It has much better combat as there is a much larger variety of enemies instead of just facing off against a molded monster after another molded monster. The story is intriguing, but at points cheesy but it all comes into play at the end for what I thought was a story that truly completed what RE7’s story set out to do. The 4 lords of the village offer different horrors and areas as every area is never the same as before. You’ll be in castle Dimitrescu hiding from the horrors that await there, to finding a brand new atmosphere and experience in house Beneviento. The village itself also plays a huge role in this game as it becomes a side character itself. Everytime you come back, there will be puzzles you can now solve, to doors that you can now open and enemies now lurking around in corners that you were sure you already searched through. It is always a delight to go through the village and take a little break from the intense 8 - 12 hour story. Some may complain that the game was too short but my first play through took me about 13 hours and I wasn’t even 100% finished searching everything. The only reason I’m giving this game a 9 is because of the scare factor. In Resident Evil 7 there were moments where I was out of ammo and felt hopeless, defenceless and scared hiding in the dark shadows of the Baker home. However in Resident Evil Village there were only a few little jumpscares that did get me, but I didn’t feel the experience I had when I was trying to get away from the enemies in RE7. I always felt like I had way more then enough ammo and I actually felt like doom guy looking for the enemy’s to kill them to acquire some currency for the duke, or crafting materials. There was one part in this game though that did remind me of the horror I felt from playing the Silent Hills P.T demo all those years ago but it was just in that one moment. If it had Resident Evil 7’s horror then this game would for sure be a 10. This game is still a joy to play and I recommend anyone new to horror or a returning player coming back from RE7 to give this game a try. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t wanna drag this out too much with explanation’s but I’ll just narrow it down with my pro’s & cons..

Pro’s: Beautiful visuals / Environment & Sound design / Atmosphere effects etc. Awesome areas to explore with great level designs

Great enemy & Boss variety and rewards from them.

Awesome having the merchant to purchase new weapons / equipment and further upgrade upon them with attachments etc.

Decent lengthy campaign - not far too long and not too damn short.

Some good throwbacks to the original foundation, tying into the overall Resident Evil lore / Story.

Some good unlockables for completing the game, to make for good replay value on harder difficulties with New Game Plus. Also good old Mercenaries makes it’s long awaited return as the extra bonus side game.

Cons: Couple of the boss fights were fairly average and nothing special ( Heisenberg & Donna could have been better ) but a few were also great I thought, so not too bad I guess but yeah they could have made them better overall I think personally. Not too bad overall though.

Still don’t get to see Ethan Winters goddamn face! He talks a lot more in this but still rather bland in character compared to our Classic - Leon, Claire, Chris & Jill characters... but once you finish this game you’ll see why they didn’t bother with Ethan so much.

Other than that it’s a really great instalment in the series and I don’t have much else to pick at in terms of faults. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it and am now going through on the hardest difficulty to unlock more gear etc.

Definitely worth picking up! 9/10 or 4.5/5 stars from me.

I also love how the graphics have a heft to them in the game. It makes the game feel more grounded in reality. I also liked that the game didn't take itself too seriously and there was some humor in the game as well as funny moments. The things that brought the score down for me was I felt there were not enough variety of areas to explore and not enough rewarding incentive to replay the game like finding harder secrets. I hope it sells really well, so RE9 can get a really great budget and the developers will know that they nailed the design in this game. Improvements I'd want for the next game: Take this core design and apply it to an even grander scale. A bigger game map with even more exploration. More variety of enemies. More variety of mini bosses. More main bosses. More puzzles. More keys. More hidden secrets. More weapons. More ways to overcome enemies, more plot lore, etc. Make it even more of an epic adventure like so many other triple A titles are nowadays. Expand

Village is going to feel very familiar to you if you have played Biohazard (RE7), for better or worse. For me, this was a somewhat formulaic RE outing that didn't push any boundaries out of the comfort zone RE7 found. I'll explain below.

The graphics are a strong selling point of the game. Almost everything looks amazing and despite the premise of a tiny village, RE8 is able to display a nice diversity of landscapes and textures. The early-game is also reminiscent of RE4 as well as RE7 with the eerily quiet dwellings amid a rural backdrop.

The downside of the graphics is that Capcom have taken the horror theme a bit too literally and so many buildings and locations are incredibly dark. When used tentatively this is great, however in Village I ended up increasing the brightness to unnaturally high levels just to make the game more playable when trying to locate items and doorways in the dark. In addition to this, RE8 is recycling familiar themes of underground labs, castles and marshy terrain, not too dissimilar from RE4 and RE8.

The gameplay of RE8 is a mixed bag. I played on Casual difficulty as I expected any higher would just be a case of numbers, with enemies doing more damage. Again my issue with Village is the formulaic recycling of mechanics, especially the locked doors and tedious, time-consuming puzzles. There is far too much backtracking with various keys and locks. In the early game especially I was constantly being told doors were locked or opened on the the other side. I understand this is a staple of RE but I find it very outdated and I wonder if I would have enjoyed the game more if I wasn't delayed by these design choices, because there are some fantastic moments in the game which I won't spoil here, but I also wonder if there is a need for punctuation between the climaxes and I hope there is a better alternative to inane puzzles.

I must also applaud the game for being accessible and catering, in that there are obviously various difficulties but also concept such as aim assist. Dark Souls fans will cringe at this but I believe allowing people to play games in a manner that befits their abilities results in happier gamers and happier customers.

Despite the aforementioned puzzles, I found the game to be well-paced overall. I was alarmed when I was told in advance there would be four major bosses to defeat before the final boss, but it was good to see these were not as tedious and cumbersome as it sounded. However I was also glad to see it end when I was nearly 8 hours into it. Resident Evil games have never been very long affairs and are typically designed with multiple play-throughs in mind. That's not my cup of tea, but there is ample content to justify replayability.

The story of Village isn't overly complex and that's a good thing. It follows on from RE7 with Ethan Winters being the primary protagonist. I won't spoil it but there are a good amount of twists and upheavals that made me happy to sit through the cut-scenes. There some nice nods to earlier games and even some fourth-wall breaking humour which I appreciated. The story is a good element in Village as it moves forward whilst acknowledging the past and doesn't become stale.

Overall, Village does its best to keep the RE franchise fresh and alive, however some mechanics such as the puzzles and backtracking are things I would like to see Capcom re-invent or replace. Whilst Village is a fairly good game, it looks, plays and feels too much like RE7 for my liking. There will most certainly be a RE9 and I look forward to seeing if Capcom can leave their current comfort zone and give us something different.

The direction with Village is clearly different compared to its predecessor Biohazard, there is more focus on action as the game gives us more ammo drops and a guard mechanic to help with the combat, but this isn't to say that there aren't scary sequences in the game. Unfortunately, these tend to be jumpscares but it is because of this unknown that adds to the horror of the game.

There are more enemy types and different encounters which is an improvement on Biohazard, and the satisfying combat pairs well with this variety. Ethan as a protagonist still falls flat despite having more exposition on him. The other enemy characters aren't any better but they still serve their purpose to make the story interesting.

While the game has a really brilliant plot plentifully stuffed with amazing, unpredictable twists and gorgeous story, it has almost nothing in common with its claimed survival horror genre. While the previous entry was so scary some players might haven’t finished it, Village is more of just a good action-adventure game successfully combining puzzles and shooter elements. The only horror episode is only 20–25 minutes long, though yes, it’s actually terrifying. However, albeit the game lacks direct horror encounters, the atmosphere is made almost perfectly, successfully reflecting the nature of the place you have to make a deep dive into, granting the game with a special, a bit sinister vibe. Nevertheless, the Village is also the game’s disadvantage, as it utilizes open-world-style mechanics without being immersive enough. There are no really interesting side activities in the Village, so use of free-roam is quite questionable. The other questionable move is the decision to restrict the player’s inventory capacity, generally used in full-scale RPGs. The further the game progresses the more this mechanic irritates, without actually making it harder, rather just more boring. Given Village significant reliance on shooter elements, it’s a major, yet the only real disadvantage of the gameplay. Besides the gameplay, the game has an incredible soundtrack, perhaps one of the best of the year in the entire industry, which fits its atmosphere perfectly. Village is surprisingly stunning visually on PS4 Slim hardware and runs very smoothly throughout the entire playthrough, continuously maintaining comfortable framerate. Expand

The Performance on the PS4 is Good. The Story is not the best Resident Evil Story but it is Good Trash Entertainment. The Game play is Solid. The Weapon Handling feels good, the Movement too.
It is not so good like the Resident Evil 2 Remake but it is a Good Resident Evil Game.

I personally felt that the first half of the game was much stronger than the second half. The first half of the game has the player explore the castle of the internet's favorite well endowed vampire mommy, Lady D, as well as the best horror dungeon of the game in the puppet house. After those highs, I felt that the game could not reach those levels of excitement and horror again, which is only reinforced by the genre change near the end of the game. Overall, RE8 was an enjoyable game and left me eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this arc. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fantastic direct sequel to a fantastic game! RE7 was the first Resident Evil game I played, and the game that got me into the series. So, I was naturally incredibly excited about this game. I loved the look, the monsters, the bits of lore we were given, and how tense the trailers made the game appear.

I was not disappointed, if anything, my expectations were greatly exceeded. This game's graphics can be downright gorgeous and fascinating, and also gory and gritty. The story, while it may have its issues, still keeps me hooked and emotional. Yes, the father saving his daughter trope is nothing new, but something about this game's overall atmosphere helps make it feel more intense this time around. Next, the horror in this game is well-done. Sure, it's not as much of a slow-burn as RE7 but I'm honestly okay with that. I like the slow horror of RE7 but I also like the Psychological Thriller feel that this game has. The Beneviento segment in particular is one of the scariest in gaming and has stuck with me almost a full year after I played it. This game isn't without its faults, my biggest critique is the pacing of some of the areas. While I love all the areas for different reasons, some are very long such as Dimitrescu's castle, and others are very short like Moreau's area. This is my biggest critique of the game and is the only thing that drags the game down some.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic horror game and a great sequel to RE7. It isn't without its faults, but it has some very high highs, like the amazing graphics, intriguing (albeit slightly cliche) story, great horror, amazing enemy designs, and areas that are beautiful and gritty but vary too much lengthwise. I'm excited for this game's future DLC and the future Resident Evil games as a whole.

Village looks an mixed RE4 and RE7, for who like this genre its a good game.

But for who love the classic Resident Evil, still a game that was made for the new audience instead for the old fans, modernized especially with that first person camera view, there a quite "balance" of course, but especially for who still cant forget how capcom treated his fanbase with "Resident Evil 3 Remake" last year, this game looks an spite against the fanbase, because everything that you wanted in RE3R are included in this game, including the minigame: "Mercenaries" mode (the fanbase pleaded capcom to release the Mercenaries mode for RE3R, but unfortunately they released for RE Village, the most useless mode in this game since the fun content of this minigame was that you are able to play different characters, but in a first person game doesnt have a lot of sense...)
Also they are planning to include another multiplayer VS called RE Verse, another battle royale game that capcom want absolutely push desperately, maybe it was fun if they included more variated modes (like a co-op mode, etc...)

Probably there still people that giving an easy 10/10 because they are impressed from the graphics and they are more fans of RE4 and RE7, but clearly capcom doesnt care anymore about his fanbase since they spent more budget on this game than "Resident Evil 3 Remake" that was supposed to be exactly like RE Village...

I loved the first half of this game, it's scary, tense and invokes RE4 with its setting amazingly, making your way through the titular village is a bone chilling experience because you never know what kind of horrific beastman will jump out at you next, and the next two areas, being Castle Dimitrescu and House Beneviento, are phenomenal, especially the latter, with that freakish baby thing, ugh I love it. However once you finish that first half, it slowly starts degrading in quality, The Swamp and The Factory range from boring to awful, and the latter half of The Factory really just wears me out, the entire area was frustrating and lasted far too long in my opinion, with a discount Chainsaw Guy that I didn't find half as scary or intimidating as the Chainsaw Guy, it also has discount Regenerator because every bloody Resident Evil game needs one apparently. As for The Swamp... well it's a swamp level, it sucks, they all do, screw Swamp levels.

Where the game shines is The Four Lords, Heisenberg was my favourite, I found his voice acting so fun, his actor delivers every line with enthusiasm just too good for this game, I still find myself quoting him almost daily. Lady D was also cool in a Mr. X kind of way, she's not quite as imposing as Mr. X, but she certainly outshines Nemesis from the RE3make. Unfortunately Donna Beneviento isn't given any lines or anything to do really, but her doll thing Angie is at least interesting, if you like Chucky, you'll like her, then there's Moreau... anyway.

Gameplay is what you'd expect after RE7, nothing new, except it feels generally better. Visually the game looks great, I played on a ps4 pro with Performance mode on, but even then the game was still beautiful looking, in a gory kind of way.

I know it's been said a million times, but what the hell is with Chris? OK, I get it, he didn't want Ethan involved, I get it, but why not tell him what's going on at the swamp? he's already involved at that point, and he's not likely to leave now, how would he leave anyway? with the car he doesn't have? It makes no sense for Chris not to tell him after he's already gotten involved. On top of that, Chris is such an uncharacteristic jerk in this game, I get wanting to hide things from Ethan, but do you have to be such a douche about it? Even Chris' new team calls him out, Chris acts like Fake Ada does in RE6, only this is the real Chris, and it's really odd.

My real issue with the game is the switch to action halfway through, this combined with the RE4make has me worried, I'm worried Capcom will slip back into "horror bad action good" when RE8 does horror, it's amazing, but when it does action, it's fine, good sometimes, but not what I want out of Resident Evil. With an RE4 remake and RE9 looking like it'll focus on Chris, I feel like we're going into another dark age with this series, I hope I'm wrong but Capcom are no strangers to letting me down.

The standard enemies are a huge improvement from 7’s molded as you actually gain from killing them as they drop loot necessary to make ammo, healing products and explosives. The villains are each interesting in their own right although I found moreau to be the comical intellectual stupid character who the group make fun of which is rather repetitive and who we literally got in 7 as Lucas. The negatives for me would be that the first area you go to other than the village it’s self is the gorgeous Castle that Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters inhabit I felt that the 3 other areas after this weren’t as good, 2 of them weren’t necessarily bad but no where near as interesting or creative as the first. I wasn’t a fan of Heisenbergs factory at all I found it very repetitive and mostly boring and more reminiscent of the boat section in 7 which I didn’t like either mostly for the same reasons. The boss battles where all intriguing but far too easy regardless of difficulty their patterns were very repetitive so therefore easy to figure out quickly. Overall I really enjoyed RE: Village enough to say it’s a good game but once again it has more than enough flaws to hurts its overall score. Expand

And the bosses are pretty unique!

    The bad:

The entire factory section is just back-track after back-track after back-track, so it's confusing on where to go next.

The core gameplay gets repetitive after a little bit, so it's better to just ignore enemies.

And finally... The final boss is too easy.

There are just a few things keeping me from giving this an 8, but I think a 7 is reasonable.

Now, instead of terrible mutants, we have a three-meter sexy Wolverine, Magneto from Aliexpress, a Doll and some whiner. Yes, near the end of the story will be explained what is happening, but it is so stupid and funny, as if the script was written by a first-year student. He will explain it in one banal twist.

What a banal drama in the game. The writers wanted to show the torment of the hero and his suffering, but it looks terribly strained and I had no reason to somehow believe in what is happening and sympathize with Ethan.

I highly recommend playing on the easy difficulty level. Unlike part 2-3, when you can shoot a zombie through the knee and pass it, in Re: Village you have to kill monsters, because they drop money and treasures needed to improve weapons. The main problem is that the enemies like a sponge absorb ammo.

I recommend buying the game at a discount of 60-70%

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Favorite things about the game are the achievable challenges. Generally, you can accomplish the vast majority of the challenges just with persistence. That means the unlockables are attainable. Only the light saber seems “impossible” with the SS mercenary on all levels requirement.

And with all RE games, the infinite ammo feature makes for some fun replayability.

Much of the scenery is well done, including interior settings, like Castle Dimetrescu. Although don’t ask why after decades they didn’t hire a remodeler to raise the doorway heights for Lady D. She had giant custom chairs and tub, but the doorways were all still normal size. (Btw one of the other funny things in that section was Ethan repairing his wrist and it “heals” his jacket too.)

One thing lame about Heisenberg (besides his goofy personality, bad monologues, and out-of-place industrial persona) was that he was “sympathetic” to a degree, but the game doesn’t acknowledge it. Ethan berates him repeatedly. And Ethan refuses his “deal” yet we don’t know what were his details or how he was going to “use” Rose to defeat Miranda who clearly was both Ethan’s and Heisenberg’s enemy. Why not deal with him? Only after Ethan refuses Heisenberg does H eventually say he was going to steal Rose’s power, but was the the original plan? Would he have made a different deal? Ironically enough, Ethan does *use* Rose’s reassembly to get to Miranda so who knows. Ultimately, Ethan is a somewhat irrational and personality-less character.

Some control features were poorly executed. Like the button prompts on loot or objects were very inconsistent. Loot dropped by enemies could be grabbed easily at a distance. Some objects, like the crank handle seemed to require an exact spot for the prompt to appear. I encountered an especially frustrating time with this in the wine pool room where you have to move the statues. In my first visit there I went up to a couple statues and there was no prompt, so I figured nothing to do there until later. You have to be in the right spot and elevation looking at the correct side of a given statue. So I got stuck running around the castle looking for next opening in the linear story. It’s a bad feature in a game when you correctly try the thing to advance the game and it doesn’t work.

Another thing that’s just overdone as possible in games is the whole occult theme and the disturbing “religious” imagery. Granted it’s the villains who were perverting religious iconography, but games seem to use this device ad nauseam and it’s standard uncreativity anymore.

Also, this game desperately needs the option to turn on a mini HUD map. The village and locations are deranged mazes, and until you learn them by repetition, you’re switching to the map over and over. The design overly favors a VR experience apparently. But the minimalist HUD display fad these days either needs to go or be offered as an *option*.

Another annoying thing is the mini quicktime animations when you get grabbed by an enemy. Control completely leaves you for the duration of the grab animation. And the animation starts *before* they grab you. So if you spot the enemy in time and pull the trigger, it still might not fire if the game already transitioned into the grab animation. Basically your gun goes sterile for no reason *before* you get grabbed.

The game is an atmospheric play through with some good puzzles, but needs work to merit a higher score.

As my first Resident Evil game, Village was... a complicated experience.
First of all, I didn't expect anything interesting from the story, and I actually didn't really get anything interesting from it; the writing is completely nonsensical and amateurish, and the plot is padded out for no reason, which is surprising, considering that the game is short. The worst part of the story, however, is how it actually takes itself seriously, even though it's hilariously badly written.
The gameplay is good though, it feels slightly clunky but it's fun and it works well.
The characters are so-so; some characters are rather unlikable and uninteresting, while others are intriguing and cool.
The visuals and the audio design are amazing, and the atmosphere is wonderful.
Lastly, Resident Evil Village's gothic horror setting is undoubtedly the best part of the game; it's haunting and terrifying but also beautiful.
Unfortunately for Resident Evil Village though, the game has many flaws.
In spite of the short length, the puzzles are dull and they slow down the game's pacing significantly.
Also, the story feels rushed at times and the boss fights are pretty easy; in fact, the whole game is unexpectedly easy and not creepy. The game tries to blend survival horror and action but it ultimately falls short at both areas because the survival horror elements are almost absent and the action is uninspiring.

    Pros:
    + Fun gameplay
    + Memorable antagonists
    + Gorgeous visuals
    + Fantastic atmosphere
    + Superb setting

    Cons:
    - Very weak narrative
    - Inconsistent pacing and boring puzzles
    - Disappointing bosses
    - Survival horror elements are lacking
    - Underwhelming action elements

    Narrative: 2/10
    Gameplay: 7/10
    Content: ?/10
    Characters: 5/10
    Graphics/Audio: 9/10

    Final Rating: 6/10
    - Decent -
Resident Evil Village is a hot mess; a mishmash of different half-baked ideas, resulting in a game that doesn't know what it wants to be, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

    Do I recommend it?:
Yes but maybe at low price.

I have recently played RE8 Village, and although I liked the game in several ways, there are other points that make me hate it quite a lot. I’m old enough to know about the former "Biohazard" first person shooting games and the not so bad "Umbrella Chronicles", which gave us another side of the story at Spencer's Mansion. Knowing all this I must say that having all the resources and technology from these days, why don’t give the player the choice to change their view? Why a first person camera?.

Ethan Winters is a faceless character that never makes you get into his story, looking for his disappeared girlfriend Mia. (RE7). The feel of that game isn’t the essence of Resident Evil, but that is another tale.

RE8 VILLAGE plot is in the air, playing with european myths and literature, vampires, werewolves, monsters from the lake, etc... and Chriss Redfield attached to the story in desperate intent to turn this into Resident Evil, sorry but I don’t bite it.

The main facts and several parts of the story seem to be inspired by SILENT HILL, a father who is looking for his daughter in the middle of a strange place surrounded by demon-like creatures, but in this case all without salt and pepper. Maybe you can't find the resemblance with the old KONAMI title, but the truth is that this plot is weak, and certainly isn’t polish.

The good stuff, all the artwork is fantastic, even addictive, like Lady Dimitrescu and her castle. The game is fun but is it really a Resident Evil game? .

I can't give it more than 5 it would be a treason to all that deep plots and amazing characters from the main RE franchise,

The framerate is so bad, together with the FOV and camera bobbing(we did turn that one off, thankfully) makes us motionsick (and we are used to play VR games with no issues). Just spin the camera around and youl'll see what I mean. This is a shame but I can't give the game an higher score as I'm not sure if I can keep playing It in these conditions.

Aside the poor optimization of the game, so far I'm also not impressed with the villains of this game. Plain day light werewolves, that as my wife puts it, look like guys out of magic mike with make up on. The whole thing feels like the werewolves from twilight have been ported into this game. There's also the bad/buggy animation on them, sliding all over the place, poor enemy ai rotation, and the list goes on.

This is a shame. I spend 200 dollars on the collector edition for this. Im really hope capcom can patch this thing (obviously the performance, as I'm sure they wont spend resources changing the visuals/design of the game) .because as it is its not an enjoyable experience.

Semi-automatic..... triggers... aiming.... can Capcom figure out how guns work, please? This gameplay is atrocious when your semi automatic weapon has a 3.2 second cooldown per shot. It's no fun. Wtf were they thinking. Coulda been great. Resident evil is dead.

The game is so poorly made that is almost unplayable.
Boss battles are so boring, that I can't think of a game with worse boss fights like this. you just empty your guns to a super obvious weak spot (if not just anywhere on target) and you just run around to avoid the attacks.
The 'puzzles' can be resolved by a 6 year old. I found them so easy that insulted my intelligence. The absence

The absence of a mini map HUD is inexcusable.

Little weapon variety, and very straightforward upgrades. Nothing challenging you just upgrade everything

The story is absurd and uninteresting.

The only good part of the game is its first couple of hours that gave you a couple of good scares, and the castle part that was atmospheric.

The series need to be rebooted, I wouldn't bother with RE9 if it follows the same path

I assure you I'm not trolling: I just found RE8 to be that uninspired. It may seem insane that this much potential was squandered, but indeed at every turn this game trades any amount of tension or just storytelling to shove a scripted attempt at shocking the player.

It is exceedingly unwelcome and overstated from beginning to end, and I just wish the developers had seen fit to provide

The game looks great... And that's all it has going for it... The story is full of plot holes and makes zero sense, character motivations are downright idiotic and it plays wonky as hell for such a high production value game.
Honestly, they could invrst a bit more in writers to make it make some sense.
... It's so sad to see yhem try to squeeze this IP with such crappy games

The part is far from called Resident Evil, almost devoid of horror, and the game has become more action-packed and boss battles are less bad than I expect, so I see this part as less quality in all respects compared to Resident Evil 7

Another R.E. game, another frustrating experience. Thankfully it was a rental...
Couldn't figure out what to do, pulled up walkthru, ok for ten minutes.. Cant get past this door, missed it on the walk thru. Story was boring and dejavu inducing, so that was it for me. Trash game, with an unhelpful map. Watch the underworld series instead.

Up till now I thought 2019’s RE3 was the worst in franchise I’d played. Little did I know Resident Evil Village is on its way to prove me wrong.

Complete disaster of a game and one big mess of bad choices. The overall setting is horrible, maps are badly designed, and although I admit that separately their textures seem polished, the problem is that they don’t add up together. It’s like

Complete disaster of a game and one big mess of bad choices. The overall setting is horrible, maps are badly designed, and although I admit that separately their textures seem polished, the problem is that they don’t add up together. It’s like they never had a bird’s-eye view of the entire project to see those issues resulting in such mess.

Since the game doesn’t have a single distinct villain, they tried to compensate the lack of villain quality with quantity, offering instead a bunch of potential bosses that look and sound extremely contrived and monotonous in their lines and unrealistic in all aspects. The protagonist too seems underdeveloped, and, although we had seen Ethan before in absolutely fantastic RE 7, after playing the Village for over 3 hours, I still couldn’t project myself in his shoes and care, no matter how hard I tried. The writing is very bad and lacks any hook. In RE 7 even the ordinary minions were so specifically designed, fighting them was suspenseful fun, and now we came all this way to the Village just to shoot a bunch of classic zombie-resembling freaks? Wake up, Capcom! We’ve grown bored of it, where is your imagination? Again, I want to highlight that this game lacks any visual and narrative originality.

You will be surprised how inferior it is to its predecessor, and on top of everything they didn’t add a VR mode either. Now I can see why the developers after all made the game PS4-compatible. Had the Village been released for next-gen consoles only, it could’ve end up being a catastrophic failure.

In conclusion, I bought this at 40-something-percent discount and still want my money back. I’d feel disappointed even if it came 100% free. This is definitely not what a good game looks like.

Resident Evil Village is a far cry from its more grounded and horror-focused predecessor, but in the end, it’s perhaps just as lovable. At times it feels like a greatest hits collection of some of the best elements of previous Resident Evil games, and while that leads to it not being wholly coherent, it’s not to its detriment. It may not be perfect in terms of combat mechanics and storytelling, but Resident Evil Village keeps you on your toes, with you never truly knowing what’s waiting for you around the next corner. And that’s why when playing it, the hours simply fly by. Will the series ever become stale? Not while it’s being as inventive as this, that’s for sure.

In the end, Resident Evil Village is not a perfect experience but it is still an awesome one and easily the best of the recent games in the series. It's scary, suspenseful, grounded in relatable human drama, and an overall blast to play; I highly recommend giving it a shot.
