Feb 2, 2017Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a game that really struggles to find the new voice that Resident Evil so needs as a franchise. It’s incredibly well designed and executed, and you’re not going to find a game that does VR better than this one. But it’s a confused game, sending out all kinds of mixed messages that suggest the development team - and especially the writers - have a better idea of what makes for horrific imagery than they do of horror as a storytelling genre. As a real fan of horror, and someone who has studied it for years, this is what doesn’t sit so well with me.

VideoGamerJan 23, 2017There are some fantastic environments and old school style puzzles in Resi 7. The final section stops being survival horror and becomes a bit of a clunky linear shooter, but the first few hours are scary enough to put you off Louisiana for life.

Jan 30, 2017The way the game gradually doles out its environment is impressive, but I found many of the monster encounters towards the game’s second half fairly predictable. I came to expect each new enemy encounter to pile on a couple of extra monsters similar to the ones I’d already killed...As the credits rolled, I felt glad to be done with it.

Jan 23, 2017Casual players aren’t touching something with a “7” in the title (nor is it clear will newcomers). Fans of action-angled survival horror like Dead Space or Dying Light may balk at the game’s deliberately poky controls and too easily grasped opponents. Old-school fans seem like the obvious target. But survival horror is a crowded space in 2017, and too much of what Resident Evil 7 is up to we’ve seen elsewhere — and done better.

Jan 23, 2017This new game also shows up just as people start to ask, "how do we do horror in VR?" RE7 doesn't just answer that question. It slams its winning, bloody hand onto a table like a defiant poker champ. To be fair, the game still leaves some VR territory unexplored, particularly things like hand-tracked controllers and room-scale experiences, but its tasteful handling of comfort, presence, and jump-scare gimmicks has no peer. Flat-screen players will have plenty to enjoy as well, but strap into the VR mode if at all possible. Either way, Resident Evil is back.

Jan 23, 2017Resident Evil 7 is an absolute triumph that honors the series' legacy in almost every way imaginable. But it also stands confidently on its own as an amazing piece of interactive horror.

Mar 7, 2017Perhaps Resident Evil 7's most intriguing quality is how it plays around with the idea of retracing your steps.

Jan 23, 2017After years of stagnation, the stage was ripe for a revamp and revitalization, and on that front, Resident Evil 7 succeeds wildly. It wisely swaps its continent-crossing conspiracies for a provincial tour through a solitary dilapidated homestead in Louisiana. It cleaves away its bloated, lore-laden mythology for a brand new cast of characters who don't require hours of poring through fan wikis to decipher their motivations. And most significantly, Resident Evil 7 tosses aside the series' once revolutionary third-person camera perspective for a dreadfully immediate first-person view.
-
Jan 26, 2017Resident Evil 7 can occasionally frustrate with excessive boss fights and patronizing puzzles, but it’s still a scary and violent blast of survival horror that paints a bright future for the franchise. Bloody, tense, and exciting throughout, Resident Evil 7 is exactly what the series needed. Full of dread and brimming with anxiety, the series that started it all has finally found itself after decades of wandering.

Jan 23, 2017It's a minor miracle that Capcom was able to bounce back from the atrocity that was Resident Evil 6 with a taut, uncompromising horror story that borrows the best bits of the series while pushing forward in welcome new directions. There might be a number in the title, but don't let that throw you...Whatever your relationship is to the series, Resident Evil 7 is sensational video game horror.
-
Mar 7, 2017A bold and successful reinvention of the franchise. It confidently blends together the old and the new, combining the best of the series with more modern first-person exploration games. It’s a complex mystery that balances terror, action, and exploration almost seamlessly. And despite standing on its own quite well, it ultimately ties itself into the existing — and incredibly convoluted — Resident Evil mythos in a satisfying way.
-
Feb 9, 2017From its opening unhinged riff on Texas Chainsaw Massacre to the more traditional bulk of its gameplay, it’s an eerie, consistently entertaining puzzle box drenched in Southern gothic dread. And the videotapes are the stroke of genius that turn that puzzle box into a tesseract.
