My advice: First and foremost, do not trust IGN's mediocre 6.5 / 10 verdict. If you're a fan of the Biohazard/Resident Evil franchise (as in a fan of the survival horror elements evermore present in the earlier titles), chances are you'll very much like Resident Evil Zero. It offers a solid prequel narrative to RE1 (or 'The Mansion Incident'), and ties into it very nicely IMO. AndMy advice: First and foremost, do not trust IGN's mediocre 6.5 / 10 verdict. This is what a survival horror game should be. It has a heavy atmospheric setting and music. The characters do not talk too much, the plot is about a conspiracy and the narrative is not holding your hand. The best part of this game for me is the visuals: nothing beats the beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds which are like an artistic painting. Other things I liked, were the notes, diaries or memos left throughout the game which were simple, short , yet very instrumental in understanding and uncovering the plot. The gameplay is a pleasure also, its simple and not complicated and allows you to focus more on the lore and "experience" of uncovering puzzles and progressing the plot.

The only downside to this game is, the item management was annoying. You have only 6 slots and you are forced to drop most of the items on the floor. This means you have to run back to specific areas in order to grab the items. This is annoying. Although I DO APPRECIATE the concept/design, they should have added 2 more slots at least to make it better(or even better, re-instate the universal treasure boxes across many rooms along with leaving items on the floor).

Other than that, I am pleased Capcom is witnessing the success of the Re-Mastered versions of the original Resident Evils. It certainly is a slap in their face, for realising that players are more interested in Story, Atmosphere, puzzles then shooting galore games. Hopefully, with the advent of RE2,RE3 remakes, they accept that they can make NEW RE titles which follow the models of these re-makes. That would be amazing and I'm sure they would surpass all their sales expectations.

2016 seems like the year, that developpers are starting to "get it", that the games from the 1990s era had TIMELESS charm and finally accept that certain "niche" aspects are what makes the Franchises what they are!

RE ZERO is a true Survival Horror gift.

Bosses within the game are interesting, and are not your run-of-the-mill bullet sponges [they do require strategies to defeat them]. The item management system does take a small bit of time to get used to, and you will find yourself backtracking to pick up items that you need later on, but the game usually opens up shortcuts to make the trek back to your beloved items shorter. Lastly, the story itself does a great job of explaining the events before RE1, making a lot of the afore events more meaningful.

Overall, RE0R has all the classic Resident Evil atmosphere and intense moments you could ask for. With a great story, overhaul graphics, and fantastic gameplay I only have one thing to say; Go buy it now!

Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster is a great remaster from an old-school game that hasn't done bad at all. In fact, this game offers the old and good survival horror essence. (Which goes the same for the Resident Evil 1 Remaster) Many years after this game was released, it still holds some stunning sounds and visuals. Although the gameplay remains the same with the love/hate controls, which has never been a problem for me. (Just a learning curve, really. Resident Evil fan or not.)
As for the nice little tidbits they added in, like the Wesker mode and new fan service outfits. (Which are cool) Left me wishing for more from the game's release. But considering we are getting a game that may have never been a shiny new coat, I'm fine with what is here!

The main game, for those who don't know is the story BEFORE the main Resident Evil story starts and explains many of the questions left unanswered during the first Resident Evil game. If this is your first, I'd recommend starting with the Resident Evil HD Remaster THEN play this, as it kind takes away a little of the magic that the original game has.

Story wise, its a step forward for the series, by connecting the dots and giving a story that is expands to the series. Along with its own creepy setting and mansion. Ironically, as many of the questions are answered, some are created by this game. Such as how the main character, Rebecca isn't a hardened zombie killing machine by the time the events of the first Resident Evil occurs. (Oh well, just chalk it up to PTSD, then. *shrugs*)

As for the gameplay, it plays almost identical to Resident Evil HD Remake, with two distinct differences. The partner/zapping system and inventory management are drawbacks to this experience, but I guess I can polish a turd every once in a while. I just look at them as added challenges to outweigh the endless abyss of a toybox, almost EVERY Resident Evil has and the partner system can be utilized to have you play a solo game without the partner for added challenge. (Just leave some ammo for your partner, while they wait in another room or put them in a safe area.)

Outside of that, Resident Evil 0 has plenty of cool challenges, BOWs and has plenty of the classic gameplay you'll get from the pre-RE4 gameplay style. Bonus content bumps this up to a solid 8-8.5.

This adds to the building of camaraderie between the two player characters that grows throughout the game. Another memorable boss fight is the final, where the pair face off against the Queen Leech. Billy must use his ‘charm’ to distract her majesty, while Rebecca works on opening the sun roof to weaken the queen. That said, the zombie monkeys in RE0 go down as the worst RE enemies of all time. Resident Evil Zero was the first game in the saga that I played and is to date one of my favorites, starting with the new modality of introducing two playable characters and how you interact with them, the different locations where you play and of course their protagonists, Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen seem to me one of the most underrated characters in the franchise and that personally (more Rebecca) are my favorites. The only bad thing about the game, in my opinion, was that at times it felt a bit repetitive and therefore boring, but this only on a few occasions, I also don't understand why they removed the trunks of objects since if it is very angry to be returning for objects you left on the floor.
    Entering Spoilers !!
As for the plot, I found it quite interesting , to put a mysterious man outside the train with a rather peculiar robe, it catches your attention and you want to know more, the story also explains why the Alpha team arrived at the mansion in search of of the Bravo and well throughout the game basically explains what and why things are happening, the zombies and the monsters that we encounter, we are shown that William Birkin and Albert Wesker are behind these things but soon it is revealed that the one who unleashed the infection was the founder of Umbrella, James Marcus, how the events of the story unfold, it seems to me that it was done well but neither expect the great story, it is simply a good plot, which he did perfectly It was connecting directly with the events of Resident Evil, seeing how Rebecca addresses the Spencer mansion.
In conclusion Resident Evil Zero is a great game of the series, a great challenge and a title with good playability, graphics and good history although at times it becomes quite flat.

After playing the Resident Evil remaster when it came out and getting my first real taste of the old school Resident Evil games, I was really looking forward to another HD release of one of the franchises older games. So, Resident Evil 0 is out and despite how much I enjoyed it, I can’t help but be somewhat disappointed.

If you’ve played the Resident Evil Remaster, you know exactly what to expect with this release of Zero. Updated controls to better suit players who aren’t used to the original control scheme, as well as updated graphics to better your HD television are both present in RE0. The main difference between this and the Remaster released in 2015 is the ability to control two characters. You play as Rebecca Chambers, a rookie officer of the police group STARS, and Billy Cohen, an AWOL soldier sentenced to death with a checkered past. You take control of both of them in an attempt to survive the zombie outbreak they’ve both stumbled into.

Gameplay wise, getting used to controlling both Billy and Rebecca, as well as using the menus to swap items and issue commands is very cumbersome and unintuitive at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll find the controls are very efficient and work well. The game also does a great job of utilizing the mechanic of character swapping. Both Billy and Rebecca have their own unique attributes and skills, making both of them useful in different circumstances like puzzle solving, or in other cases where another character needs rescued. In essence, Resident Evil 0 does a great job of utilizing the dual character swapping mechanic to its fullest.

It’s not without its flaws though. One annoyance is the constant navigation of the menus to issue any commands outside of “Follow me” and “Stay there.” This is only made more annoying by the fact that there are two dedicated buttons for commanding your partner, only to discover they both do the exact same thing. Telling your partner to “Hold fire” and “Fire at will” are commands you’ll be using just as often as telling your partner whether or not to follow you. Not dedicating a button to these specific two commands - especially when there’s already one readily available – feels sloppily done.

Of course, if you enjoyed Resident Evil’s core gameplay, you’ll definitely find some fun here. You explore a mansion infested with zombies and other monsters, backtrack a lot, solve puzzles and fight interesting bosses. Only in this game you do it as a team (woo!).

However, the game’s main annoyance and easily the one thing that can really make or break RE0 for you is its inventory system. Like previous Resident Evil games, inventory management and the conservation of resources is a primary concern. The ability to swap items between Rebecca and Billy should make this more manageable - and it does to a certain extent - but the inventory chests used in other Resident Evil games have been completely removed.

Remember those chests you could use to safeguard your items? The one’s that were placed throughout all the levels and made your entire stored inventory accessible from any chest? Those are gone now, and instead have been replaced with the abilities to both swap and drop items in your inventory. While both of these mechanics are useful, they don’t do a good job of making up for the removal of the inventory chest. The problems start with the limited inventory space given to both characters. Both Billy and Rebecca only have inventory slots of six, making carrying space limited. However, two handed weapons like the shotgun only make things worse by taking up more space than previous games. The ability to swap does help, but it does mean you’ll be spending more time in menus than you should have to. Plus, the ability to drop and leave items means you’ll be spending a lot more time backtracking to retrieve a key item. Overall, the added abilities of swapping and dropping are improvements, but the lack of an inventory chest is much more of a detriment. It’s very much a “1 step forward and two steps back” kind of deal. Resident Evil 0 would’ve been much better with all of these mechanics in place, rather than only the two we do have.

Overall, if you enjoy the core of Resident Evil, you’ll likely enjoy RE0, but it’s not guaranteed. While the simultaneous control of two characters adds a unique spin, the tedious inventory management and backtracking to retrieve items makes RE0 a much more annoying experience than its predecessors. After last year’s release of Resident Evil, I was so excited to buy this game. Now, I’m glad I rented it first. One playthrough was enough for me. So for anyone interested, I would definitely recommending trying before you buy, since the inventory management can make or break this game for some people.

Puzzle solving is also very fun. Although,I just finished Re 0 on normal difficulty without looking at walkthrough. It took me 9 hrs 20 mins to complete. I had played Re1 before and I rated it 9/10. Puzzle solving is also very fun. Although, in my opinion, it does not have any memorable puzzles as Re 1 has. Perhaps, because I had finished RE1 before, so I could handle Re 0 puzzle very well due to experiences. Graphic looks nice, no port issue even though the cut scenes are out-dated but it is expected.

The bad parts, however, are the story and storage management.

First, the story is very terrible. There are a lot of things that do not make sense. Many cut scenes feel out of place. RE 1 is much better in term of horror story; you are in the house fulled with zombies and you want to get out of this hellish place asap. I did not get this feeling in RE0. I felt like in RE0 I was exploring things here in the mansion. The relationship between characters feel unreal. The ending is too plain. Even I am not that into the RE story, the story in RE0 is just so bad to the point that I can't ignore and feel disappointed.

Second, storage management is what I don't like in RE series because I don't feel fun to backtrack. I didn't give 10/10 for RE1 only because their inventory is too small but this RE 0 is even worse due to the fact that there is no storage for you here. While you can drop items on the floor, it does not compensate the magic box. You can use some room as a hub to put all things in there but the later of the game you have to move to other places and you can't carry everything with you. You are forced to ditch out some ammo and herbs you accumulated. There are also new enemies that come out of no where in the area that you already cleared. Those enemies make backtracking even harder. This is unfair. The game will become unforgiving if you drop some important item, then backtrack and find yourself have to fight through the horde of new enemies, waste even more necessary ammo. (But I have a lot ammo left when I cleared the game, so it might not be as bad as I said)

Difficulty is also risen a lot from RE1. Enemy's positions are well placed enough to get to you if you don't move away. This game has easy mode but Re0 easy mode (from my research) is as equal as very easy mode in RE1. Zombies dies in2-4 shots. However, normal mode RE0 is harder than normal mode RE1. So RE0 only has "very easy", "normal" and "hard", which means difficulty scale is bad.

In sum, RE0 is still good game. Nevertheless, I would recommend everyone to play RE1 first. If you like RE1, then RE0 is also a game you should play. However, don't expect too much about the story and prepare to get frustration from backtrack even more. If you don't like RE1, then don't bother this one.

    Final Thoughts:

It's the run-up to #ResidentEvil4Remake! Get through Resident Evil 0’s experimentation and you’ll find a fun, familiar experience. Its atmosphere and sound design are pristine and it embodies early survival horror. It won’t please everyone and given the story and its cast have been done by the series better, if it doesn’t tickle your fancy, giving it a miss won’t mess

A joyless game. Every section feels like a tedious lateral thinking puzzle – "the farmer has a fox, a chicken and some grain, but can only carry one at a time" – and the locations and creatures are half-heartedly designed. If you haven't played it, it provides valuable insight into where Resident Evil, and perhaps games at large, went wrong over the past decade or so. Other than that, it feels like work.

An uneven but occasionally excellent update to one of Resi's most overlooked entries. [March 2016, p.74]

There are plenty of pacing and puzzle problems, but Zero can still be a horror hero at its best. [March 2016, p.87]
