Arguably the modern template for so many self-styled retro shooters, Quake has returned in stunning form. A stellar remaster, Quake not only maintains the essence of id Software's classic 1996 shooter, but it meaningfully iterates upon it too with all new additional content, mod support and crossplay. At a super budget price point, there is no reason to dive into one of the very best 3D shooters of all time.

I’m just about beside myself with how cool and surprising of a release Quake Remastered is. I hope we’ll see the same treatment for Quake II down the road, but wow it’s really special to see this classic revitalized and given such good treatment in the process. Bravo to Bethesda, id, and Nightdive for doing such a great job with this release and offering it up to the masses at a price (just $10!) that you shouldn’t miss.

As far as versions of Quake go, this one is exemplary. The platonic ideal, one might say. If you’ve found yourself missing those frantic, gib-centric days of chunky violence and blistering speed, Quake Remastered is exactly what you need. You really can’t get more Quake than this.

Quake finally gets the love it deserves after twenty-five years in the dark, with by far the most comprehensive remastered collection to date. Modernised without losing anything in the process, Night Dive have created something special by not only bringing the core experience back, but with all the expansions, new episodes, and a boatload of features that players can tune to their liking. This release takes an important yet aging technical milestone and turns it into an essential experience that is both worthy of a new audience and the embrace of old fans.

An updated version for modern hardware, Quake (2021) is the definitive way to revisit an FPS classic.

Apart from being repeatedly blasted to atoms by the pros, I enjoyed my time with Quake. It doesn’t have the same nostalgic pull for me that Doom does, which may contribute to a sense that it’s Doom’s less charismatic relative. That said, it’s a remaster done correctly, feeling like the original with technical improvements that help to showcase its timeless, quick and smooth gameplay.

Enemies are visually grotesque, and their blinding-rage aggression makes for an experience that, even if you’ve played previously, is a challenging experience. You have to make the most of all your weapons, although the classic strategy of “use your shotgun as often as possible” remains viable. Ditto for the rocket launcher, the weapon most closely associated with the game.

It's still very fun, largely due to how fast-paced it is in comparison to today's slower-paced FPS games. Campaign is still great as well. The graphics are remastered nice and crisp, though it IS from 1996 so obviously it doesn't hold a candle to today's graphics. Soundtrack is the original Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, which is awesome. There is also a bunch of extra content included via add-ons and a few mods. Online deathmatch is just as fun as ever, now included with bots to hold you over until more people join if it's a slower night.

10/10 overall, highly recommended. Apparently the game was pretty buggy when it was first released but after a few updates the current version runs flawlessly.

I really hope they remaster Quake 2 and maybe include a few more customizations to online rooms if I'm being picky.

What the hell is wrong with the aim responsecurve and why isnt it fixed even after half year. Completely unplayable. First 10% of turningWhat the hell is wrong with the aim responsecurve and why isnt it fixed even after half year. Completely unplayable. First 10% of turning makes it turn 100% and the rest 90% of the thumbstick movement does nothing. What kind on mentally handicapped **** is this. Why not just make it fully linear if the devs are incompetent or lazy. Its the best thing if there isnt any options.
EDIT: this used to be unplayable 0. It has improved a lot, but still aiming is problem. if i set deadzone to zero then it just moves it to outer deazone to about 20%. What is the purpose of that. Still 10x better than before.

Based on that alone, it does not deserve a good score at this time.

However the game is buggy and corrupted my save file twice, I completed the first 3/4 of the game on nightmare and got a "scefiosfhopensync" error, this was irritating but I thought i'd try again, starting from the last chapter, however got the same error message on Hell's Atrium. It's not surprising that Bethesda signed off on a broken port of a 25 year old game. I give this a 0 because it killed my interest in ever playing Quake again, Stop with the lazy remasters. Show some passion. Expand
