Perhaps the most tedious, slow and boring game I’ve played in a while. I love reading and don’t mind a good story driven game, but the writing in Persona 5 seems childish, dialogue borderline nonsensical. - the sae flash forwards are cool way to tell story

    - the story behind futaba wanting her heart changed makes me feel the phantom thieves were real, cause I could use a heart change myself. This allowed me to relate to the game on a deeper level

    - there's a certain appeal and humor to leveling up skills doing random normal daily things like answering questions in class or crafting lock picks or eating a huge burger challenge.

    - the Japanese locations are well done. Good replication of the real places.

    - I love the foul language the characters use, like ryuji. It makes the chars feel organic.

    - the mental symbolism behind each palace based on what the villain perceives their world is interesting to see. Like ATMs for people kaneshiro sees. And art pieces of madarame's students. And kamoshida's view of Ann. It makes me think about what my palace would look like, and the way I view others would be symbolized in my own palace.

    - the music is awesome

    - the characters are diverse and interesting.

    - by the end of it, I felt like I knew the characters personally. It's like I knew them for a life time. This was one positive thing that came out of the insane amount of cutscenes and dialogue.

    - despite the game feeling it was dragged on during the middle, the ending was absolutely beautiful, and it wouldn't have been so had the game not been so long. I really felt like a journey. An adventure. As if I've made a group of long lasting friends.

    Bad

    - too much dialogue. When **** goes down, it's fine. But when nothing's going on, it's tedious going through it.

    - it's very hard to fuse the personas required by the twins because if the persona needed isn't on my list, I would need to spend yen to withdraw it just to see what the fusion result is, then toss it away to withdraw the personas I had on my list originally. This is so inconvenient to the point where I absolutely needed to refer to a guide.

    - sometimes RNG can just completely f*** you over. There was one time I got ambushed, one of the enemies inflicted rage on my whole party, so I couldn't heal, and the enemy just wiped me out in two turns. There was literally nothing I could do to save the situation the moment I got to ambushed.

    - it's unclear when you should spend time with a confidant. The game says bond Wong deepen, so does that mean I shouldn't request them? It's unclear what I should do

    - there's a lot of unnecessary dialogue. Like when grabbing an item in dungeons, some other party members always have to chime in with a completely useless comment, like oh look it's a treasure chest when I clearly see it, or maybe we should try to press this button, when I obviously will press it already.

    - the character animations aren't exactly ground breaking. The characters are standing there talking 95% of the time, making the cutscenes visually boring. MGS is known to have a crap ton of cutscenes too but at least you get to enjoy high quality animations, which makes it more interesting.

    - the negotiations are way too vague. The answers are terribly ambiguous.

    - it sucks that I can't angle the camera freely while running in one direction. This makes scouting for enemies around me while moving difficult

It's not perfect and it isn't in my all time top PS4 games but Persona 5 is an excellent JRPG that you will have fun with for the best part of 80-100 hours (that's before you consider a new game plus as well). Value for money is second to none, the story is engaging as are the characters and the boss battles are very imaginative.

Character building, and synergistic party abilities and combat are what i look for in a good rpg. I play most games for the story, but i still need a healthy amount of gameplay. In Persona 5 the gameplay is buried so deep down that you only get to it every 15 min, and it lasts only 5 min at a time.

Another positive point in my opinion is the whole social part of the game, The daily life of Joker by itself is already very entertaining even without the whole phantom thieves and metaverse stuff, while playin I was way more exited when there was a new event with one of my favorite confidants than when I was infiltrating a Palace. Also the way the social stats are a really nice feature and honestly being able to ace a test with my maxed out knowledge was one of the best feelings the game gave me, even though I had almost no effort doing it.
This brings me to the last aspect of the game that made it hard to bear towards the end, the combat. In the first 50 or so hours I was really enjoying the combat system but because the game is so long (100hrs approximately) I started to grow weary of it given that there isn't much action since it's turn-based. In the last section of the game Is pretty much pure combat and I almost dropped it there due to the simple fact that I just couldn't handle it anymore, every battle lasted for more than 30 minutes and I didn't feel good after finishing them because I was already fed up with battles, especially when some enemies just heal 100% of their health just as you're about to land that last strike.
Overall, in my opinion, Persona is a good game, but you need to be really patient in order to play it to the end.

One of the most disappointing games I've ever played. I'm glad this was free, I just wish I hadn't spent my time on it. If you ask the fans, it's the best rpg ever, the best atlus game, and it's nearly perfect. I couldn't disagree more.

P5 is an over-stylized, highly polished game completely lacking in substance, real style, challenge, or fun. Though it teases you with a vast overworld and hints of interesting combat, what you will get instead is countless hours of hand-holding, pure repetition, monotony, and bad writing. The game consists of nothing more than tacky visual novel storytelling, tedious time management, and the most repetitive combat gameplay I have ever experienced.

Combat in p5 consists of using a barely functioning stealth system which is nothing but flashy button prompts to enter into 'fights'. 'Fights' go as follows: You hit their weak point, they fall down. You hit their weak point, they fall down. Once every enemy falls down, you use a group attack. This is >90% of the fighting, which is the only real gameplay in P5.

Aesthetically, the game looks and sounds nice at first, but you will soon realize you've been listening to the same bad attempts at jazz/funk on repeat for the last lifetime while Morgana has been yelling at you every five seconds, as they do the entire game. You will watch the same boring animations over and over and over and over while listening to the same underwhelming, and frankly bad music over and over and over. The worlds look great, the characters look nice (except Panther), the fighting is flashy, but by the time you've completed the first dungeon you will have seen/heard pretty much everything there is to see/hear well over a hundred times. Now get ready to repeat this entire cycle countless more times.

Okay, so the sound and visuals are repetitive, and the combat is boring and not challenging, and Morgana is annoying. Surely the amazing story makes up for this? Well, let's talk about the 'story'.

P5 starts strong with a clear theme which is reinforced by everything around you. You are trapped, imprisoned. The world around you restricts you and the main positive force in this world is 'the spirit of rebellion' with which you reclaim your spirit and fight against these literal and metaphorical shackles.

Sounds awesome, right? Yes, well, you will not hear about any of this again. Sadly this great idea and theme, which is even used as a visual theme in the interrogation room and the velvet room, is not actually part of the story at all. Instead it drops into the very loose concept of 'phantom thieves' which is ultimately nothing more than the exact same formula you'd expect from other persona titles. High schoolers, bad guy, psychic world, bla bla bla. Any interesting story arcs are suffocated under gags, overly drawn out sequences, and the pure monotony of the game.

P5 is also sorely lacking in nuance, depth, and taste. Do you enjoy long hallways of busts of schoolgirls in tight, small outfits? Do you like hour long gags about the hypersexualized literal 'catgirl' character being forced to take all her clothes off? Well, I don't. And it's sad to see such awful creative decision making undermine this story just like they did in P4. Cheap gags, shallowness, and cliches pervade and infest the world of P5, but there is no rebellion against these distortions because it's just the nature of this trite storytelling.

Perhaps there is something good buried under hundreds of hours of Morgana yelling the exact same voices lines at you and controlling everything you do, being forced into 100% linear gameplay for most of the game, and doing the exact same combat cycles with literally the exact same button combinations for entire dungeons. In fact, I'm sure there is. Maybe I'll watch the cutscenes on youtube or something, because I'm not finishing this profoundly boring timesink of a visual novel which people are calling a game.

Persona 5 is what final fantasy 15 should have been: a character driven, charming game where player agency is felt all troughout the experience.
It is impossible to explain the story of the game without spoilers, it is safe to say that, if you survive the early opening hours that revolve about world-building, by the time you defeat the first major boss you are hooked and invested in the life of the characters.
From a gameplay perspective there are 2 very distinct sections: inside or outside the dungeons.
Dungeons are the typical JRPG thing: you explore, you fight, you deviate from the path to collect rewarding loot.
When a monster (shadow here) is encountered, the battle system is Turn Based, in which the key to success is identifying strength and weaknesses of the opponent.
Despite being turn-based, the combat is fast paced and extremely stylish due to the cool menu design and the catch music.
Outside dungeons your goal is to leave the life of a teenager: making friends, deciding how to spend your time.
Your activities in the "not dungeon" will then increase stats like "intelligence" or "charme".
Icnreasing those stats will allow the player to unlock different interactions or story paths with the other party characters.
On paper, managing the live of a teenager sounds like the most boring thing ever, yet, as the story progresses, the investment is so high, that by the time the credits roll you can't help but wonder at how good the journey was.

I'm a long time jrpg fan, but this is time i play a game from the Shin megami tensei series.
This game is one of the best jrpg i ever played, hell probably on of the best game i ever played in my long years as a gamer, and here is why.

    - The gameplay
For a turn based jrpg, this seems like a very fresh take on the turn based combat system.
There are a ton of little things that make the fights enjoyable: from exploiting enemies weakness for an extra action (and the possibility to pass it to another character), to the possibility to negotiate with the enemies if you corner them (or recruit them, or destroy them with an oll out attack), to giving a big role to ambush or being ambushed from the enemies in the map.
All the enemies are visible on the map, and approaching them in the right way (or avoiding them) is the key to success (or failure).
The fact that you can recruit all the enemies (with the exception of boss enemies), and fuse them to create new summons or useful items is also a very good mechanics.
Half of the game is a social simulator, with you deciding how to spend your limited time: you can spend it activities that will increase your social stats (that you'll need for events and confidants) or in confidants (people which will unlock useful abilities the more you become closer to them).
This part ask for a lot of thinking on how to manage your time the best way, but it is also very enjoyable.

    - The visuals
Cutscenes are done with anime (a very good looking one).
The ingame graphic is not top edge, but is very polished and interesting.
The characters are memorable without looking unrealistic.
The menus are stylish as hell.

    - The music and voice acting
This part of the game really shines. The music is great. There are a lot of song with vocals, and they are pretty great. Just search for the battle theme "last surprise", it's something you will never be tired of listening to.
The japanese voice acting is very good, i don't know about the english one since i played it subbed (not dubbed).

    - The story
The story is good, like very good, from start to finish. I think there are very few games with a story as good as Persona 5, and it is good from start to finish.

    - The longevity
This is a very long game. If you rush it maybe you can finish it in about 95 hours, but i spent 150 hours in it for a single full game run where i did all i could thing of.

I have played every Persona since 3, and I would say JRPGs are some of my favorite games. But sadly I am quite disappointed with Persona 5. Don't get me wrong, It's an OK game, but I find a lot of it's flaws are very overlooked.

It is certainly a very stylish game, menus are amazingly stylized and while some of the textures are muddy, the overall personality of characters and environments shine though. The music also fits the art style nicely, which really shows an evolution from the previous games which were already quite stylish.

But I feel that is the only real improvement.

On the downside, From the very start, the game felt slow and meandering, both in its exposition, dialogue and in how much it holds your hand. This isn't particularly surprising for a JRPG, but a lot of the "social sim" type activities, and even the battles or "puzzles" in the dungeons, feel insanely overwritten and unnecessarily guided.

The characters also tend to talk a lot but say very little, with constantly repetitive dialogue that rarely ever really fleshes out any of them beyond the clichés. P4 was very smart in the way in which the dungeons revealed hidden aspects of our party members, making them more human and serving as an introduction, but this game rarely understands how important that is when building a long story like this.

Dungeons, while visually improved, are not mechanically interesting, whenever a puzzle is introduced, the game basically solves it for you, never trusting in the player's intelligence. Additionally, the controls and the stealth aspect of the game are very awkward, so these gimmicks play out as badly implemented mechanics that add very little to the game.
Moreover, the tremendously restrictive nature of the game always prevents you from feeling any growth, as the battles can either be a complete breeze (done in one or two turns) or go bad FAST. And this structure remains throughout almost all the game (this may have been the same in P4, but i personally felt like I could grind if I wanted and feel a more rewarding progression, while through the first 40 hours of P5, SP is so restrictive that this feels almost impossible).

And the worst culprit, the story. Persona 3 and 4 both have twists and turns that, can be satisfying, but end up falling more on the side of clichè. However, this is less of a problem when those games had a less self serious perspective.
P5 is always at the edge of something interesting, always toying with the idea of saying something challenging, but it constantly stumbles, stretches and ultimately drops the ball and falls into the clichés again and again, It lacks subtlety to actually explore any of the interesting topics it hints at: For example, It constantly asks if it is really correct to basically brain wash people? But then it shows completely monstrous comically evil rivals, so it can deflect the conflict : These are monsters so, DUH.
It tries to be cool and mature, it ends up feeling childish and defaulting to basically EVERY JRPG trope, while taking itself WAY too seriously.

There are many more issues with the game, i find, the unskipable repeated sequences (seriously, the post fight animation is 10+ seconds long, and plays fully after each of the hundreds of fights in the game), the seemingly filler dungeons, the often pointless extended exposition, which serves very little narrative purpose. And smaller peeves, such as the impossibility to 100% the game (in one 100+ hour playthrough), questionable treatment of topics, and extreme length of the game just make me think Atlus felt compelled to bloat this game, and never wrote or designed thoughtfully around it.

It is possible that many of these problems were present in the previous games of the series but i feel like the run time and the somewhat less fleshed out cast really end up damaging the complete package.

It's a good game. Good writing, deep gameplay, good story, nice art, nice mechanics. But poor design shows. The game was made in 2017 but plays like it's from the early 2000s. It has some of the worst controls I have ever seen in any game. Most of the time you find yourself fighting the controls rather than the enemies. A ton of long load screens. Also, this game is extremely linear.

Persona 5 is a game with a ridiculous amount of hidden depth, but the depth is not where its strengths lie, but in its characters, all of whom are more complex than they appear to be at first, and all of whom I wanted to get to know. Merely having lots of options is not enough for me to make a game good. I know a game is good when there's a lot of options that I'm pained to choose between because I wish I could do everything. I want to spend time with all of the characters but there's only so many hours in the day and so many days in the week to schedule everything out.

My only complaint is that a lot of the dialogue is extremely overwritten, which is a problem that pervades most JRPGs I've played, and anime I've seen in general. I mean seriously, every JRPG I've ever seen can write the crap out of practically any mundane occurrence, but it's definitely worth sitting through in this case because the characters are brimming with personality.

Edit: I just finished the game last night at 110 hours. Geez this game is insanely long, and I think that the absurd length is heavily due to how overwritten so many of these scenes are. But like I said, when a game contains this much personality and hidden depth, the extreme length is worth it if you're up for it.

Lots of time management that can get stressful so I recommend not worrying about efficiency on your first play through. Usually just when I get bored of daily life- it opens a new story arc and a dungeon that comes with it, which keeps me interested. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Solid game but as a SMT game? Didn't really live up to my expectations.

The soundtrack is good but the DLC like Raidou, Persona 2, Catherine and SMT 4 make it a million times better.
Story could be better, bad ending, a character written in for no reason and a obvious villian.
The dungeon crawling is amazing for first time but outside of Mementos if you know the pattern is too easy and the same every single time.
Characters are good but a step down from 2 and 3 but a huge step up from 4. Nothing terrible and annoying like Chie, Teddie and Nanako. Also no Mr. Perfect thank god.
The school life is absolutely boring but when you get to the dungeons it's amazing.
The Social Links in this game are good but suck because they're FORCED unlike before especially with unlocking Ultimates. Who forces something optional to unlock the best? Some social links literally mean nothing. "I'm gonna change for better!" Then 5 minutes later go back to being the same idiot they ever were. Others actually had good impact.
Difficulty is nothing. Even on Hard. All it just is, is you take more damage and gain less EXP. That's it.

I wouldn't replay this again and it's only good for one playthrough. Maybe Royal might change that. Overall it's a solid game but more for casual players.

Hoping this funded SMT V enough and will bring more Mainline and Spin-Off games. The best points being Nocturne, Raidou Kuzunoha, Soul Hackers, Persona 2 EP, SMT 4:A, etc.

This game is simply a masterpiece - if you've ever even remotely enjoyed an RPG (even if it was just a brief stint with Pokemon Blue), you will love this game. Story, art style, music, characters, level design, customization... I could go on about everything that makes this game one of the best of the decade. Of course no game is perfect - in particular, I found some of the forced story sequences/hand-holding to last a little too long (I specifically remember one chunk of story-driven narrative lasting 30+ minutes before I could even find a place to save). But the sheer brilliance of everything else far outshines this, and I would give this game 11/10 if I could.

Persona 5 is without doubt one of the best games I've ever played in my 28 years on this planet, and is one I'm sure will be remembered as the pinnacle of JRPGs (actually, just RPGs in general) for the early 21st century.

The story alone is amazing, and the way the game-play progresses and pushes that story shows how the added interaction of a game compared to a movie or tv show can really make characters and choices come to life. The game-play loop is simple: You spend days out with friends to level up social links, giving them better abilities whenever you decide to go to the palace. The game actively encourages you to spend time with friends, rewarding you with new skills and upgrades. When you spend time with them, their stories will play out, you learn a bit about them, and help them with a problem in their life. And through helping their problems, they help you back by having some useful abilities. The various ways the game-play of this game is directly tied to its story is truly an achievement for the video-game industry. The only negatives that lead me to take away any points from this masterpiece are: There are times when the graphics in the background get really bad, one short point in the story that I really didn't care for, and the fact that I am still not 100% a fan of turn-based combat and random-chance. But other than that, the outstanding visuals, amazing writing, and one of the greatest vocal soundtracks ever truly have this game earning a 9/10 Expand

Persona 5 takes the Persona formula since 3 and pushes it to its proper place- a fun RPG that both has multiple layers, real world commentary and most of all- fun gameplay.

The only reason this game doesn't get a 10 from me is that it didn't do *enough* to move away from the Persona 4 formula, and improve on it in *every* way. It is evident that those who played 3 and 4, while still getting really into the game, will realize it isn't 100% over the previous, and it is likely because it is a different game, however, if up to today I still feel like 4 pulled me in stronger than 5- it means this is better as an entry for new players than for old players.

There is still no denying the game is amazing. Story-wise the game doesn't shy from some serious commentary, and gameplay-wise it's simple yet has layers (like its story and themes! Wow, almost like it's an excellently designed game).

Persona 5 is a high school social simulator mixed with a dungeon crawler. And it's a very good mix.

In Persona 5, the protagonist and his friends are high school students who become The Phantom Thieves of Hearts, noble burglars if you will. In continuity with this "noble burglars" theme, there is even reference to Arsène Lupin, the fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise created in 1905 by French writer Maurice Leblanc (the game's protagonist also lives in the attic of a coffee shop named after Leblanc).

As a japanese teenager you have to socialise with others and upgrade your social stats which affect your party. As The Phantom Thieves Of Hearts you have to save the world by entering another reality and fighting monsters. Unlike other JRPGs though, you can't play this game leisurely, because your actions cause in-game time to pass, and you often have a set amount of in-game days to complete dungeons, or it's game over. Thankfully though the time limits are generous.

Combat plays out in turn-based battles. Outside main story missions, there is a randomly generated series of dungeons, to farm XP and money, or even complete side quests. The boss fights have mini puzzles to figure out, or these can be hinted at by the game.

The combination of a social simulator and a dungeon crawler makes for a super addictive formula. Seriously, Persona 5 is so immersive that I couldn't stop playing till late at night.

The game is simply beautiful and stylish. The OST is great, there are even a few good songs you can listen to. You can choose from the japanese and english voice over.

My only complaint is that, no matter how great a game Persona 5 is, its structure hasn't changed since Persona 4. Also, I have grown tired of the "teenagers save the world while the stupid adults can do nothing" theme. Can we have a Persona game starring 20-years-old university students instead of high school teenagers? In my opinion it would fit better with the overall theme of the series.

Overall, Persona 5 is easily the best JRPG in this generation.

P5 is the most stylish and visually-pleasing game I've ever experienced - the amount of thought and effort that must've gone into every single screen/animation is insane. The characters, story and gameplay are all fantastic too - I don't think I've ever played a 100+ hour long game before that I never got bored with and never felt was dragging on at any point, but P5 changed that.

Although 30 fps, the graphics are stunning from the anime avatar and scenes to the stylist menus and interface. Implanting a turn based combat is hard nowadays but Persona 5 is able to make combat so much fun. The music, weakness mechanic, varieties of personas, voice overs, and battle animations makes grinding the dungeons much more tolerable. The non-combat life gameplay is also just as good. There's enough places from Japan, activities, and people to bond with to distract you each day since the game goes by day to day. The moodiness story gives the atmosphere a sad feeling but gets more joyful and intense as the story progress. I'm also fond of the characters and their (English for me) voice actors that are correctly spaced out throughout the game. Easily this game takes up 100+ hours to finish from start to finish and you will get addicted. Persona 5 is perfect for anime JPRG fans and I think even if you aren't, there should be something appealing you will get if you decide to embark on this long and rewarding trip. P.S: Can't wait for the Royal Edition to come out, which would probably enhance the game more than I think.

Hands down my favorite game of all time.
I would write a more fleshed out review, but I firmly believe that going into this game completely blind like I did is the best thing you can do for yourself.
The game isn't flawless, as nothing can be perfect, but it's personally very close.
Get this game now if you even vaguely love RPGs, I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Picked this game up because of the reviews, it's not what I expected, it's pretty much a high school simulator and one giant 90+hour anime show, the story is really captivating but it did take me around 20hour mark to really get invested, i got to admit, that despite that i still skipped large parts of the text, it's just wayyyyy too much and wayyy too long to read, I came to play a game,Picked this game up because of the reviews, it's not what I expected, it's pretty much a high school simulator and one giant 90+hour anime show, the story is really captivating but it did take me around 20hour mark to really get invested, i got to admit, that despite that i still skipped large parts of the text, it's just wayyyyy too much and wayyy too long to read, I came to play a game, not a read an encyclopedia.

It's my first persona game, was easy to pick up and follow, has a lengthy tutorial (approx 8 hours) as it walks you through everything in practice and stages, freedom doesn't kick in until after this.
Not entirely a fan of the "normal life" part of the game and there is a metric crap ton of dialogue... otherwise the depth the game, it's story, the characters and world is truly amazing.

The gameplay and visuals are definitely a step up from the last games, being that they were on the ps2 and this game is simply a straight-up upgrade on those elements of the game, with an incredible art style that extends to even the UI, and the combat is faster and more engaging than ever, with much more interesting dungeons, although some drag on a bit too long. However, the story and characters were the main thing that disappointed me. There is a reason people say persona 3 has the best story, 4 has the best characters and 5 has the best gameplay. Without spoilers, a lot of characters are rather one-dimensional and either boring or vaguely annoying and the plot is villain-of-the-week-esque with slight building up for the final act every now and then, and the middle section of the game is especially plodding. I loved the cast of persona 4 as though they were my real friends and the story of 3 is unforgettable. I entered 5 with too high of expectations I suppose, but compared to those games, for me at least, I was disappointed, which is a shame since those were the parts of the past games that made me love them so much, more so than the gameplay itself. Overall, it is still a great game, one of the best jrpgs ever made, but depending on why you love persona this game will either be your favourite or least favourite of 3-5. Expand

It surprises me how similar the political woes of the EU, Japan, and USA are. Likely the rest of the developed world as well, but as an uninformed American these are the ones I know best. But without diving any further into politics, you may be surprised to see how strikingly similar the issues brought up by Persona 5 are to modern issues.
