No Straight Roads is a mischievous celebration of creativity that is rarely seen these days. Full of breathtaking energy and fabulous personality, it travels back into time when games were wild, bold, and ingenious, and revives inventive madness to the next level. No Straight Roads feels like a fresh new song that crops up in a radio’s playlist that’s usually full of commercial crud. It may be a one-hit-wonder but the game fully deserves its platinum disc and five-star review. To quote Bunk Bed Junction’s catchphrase, bunka, junka, shakalaka!

No Straight Roads is a big and colorful musical experience with heavy JRPG influences that lets you fight the man, give power to the people of Vinyl City and bring joy, all with the sweet power of rock and roll.

No Straight Roads is like an indie band that if given a chance, you’ll end up being a fan for life. It’s not perfect, but there’s enough there to ensure you have a good time. It certainly stands out in a crowd of titles where colors are muted and personalities are lacking. In a battle of Rock vs EDM, I’ll side with rock every time!

A colourful sonic wave of imagination and joy with possibly the best soundtrack of any videogame this year, No Straight Roads is sure to pluck your strings in the best possible way. [Issue#180, p.70]

No Straight Roads is one of my favourite indies of the year and it made me have renewed faith in game developers' sense of creativity.

No Straight Roads evolves greatly around music, and every other element of the game works in a way to support it. If you are the type of guy who turns the music on and forgets about the world around them, then No Straight Roads is for you.

No Straight Roads is a rockin’ good time with a friend, but beware of the many glitches, bad camera, and attacks not syncing up with the music.

A wonderfully cheerful rhythm action game that channels the best of Jet Set Radio and Parappa the Rapper but still maintains its own distinctive style.

It’s not perfect then, but I highly recommend you play No Straight Roads on the biggest, loudest TV you can find and get completely lost in a staggeringly good, unstoppable psychedelic rock n roll extravaganza.

No Straight Roads is a charming celebration of music with a polished flair for exposition that kept me thoroughly impressed. While the third-person combat is palling, other elements such as co-op and well-crafted boss stages just about make up for that. And while it only lasts for six hours, this action-adventure burns out and does not fade away; it rocks.

No Straight Roads has fantastic visuals, a phenomenal soundtrack, and lovable characters. It's a shame that the rest of the game doesn't hold up as well but I didn't regret my time with the game and will be replaying the boss fights many more times thanks to the fantastic music.

No Straight Roads looks great, sounds great, and has great characters- but it has major gameplay issues that bring down the whole experience.

Bright, colourful and completely insane. No Straight Roads is like nothing I have played in recent memory and I enjoyed my time with it. It may be a bit much for some and at times it has a few performance issues but overall if you are into weird games, brawlers or rhythm games, give it a shot you might like it. Let's rock!

The game’s exuberance helps to smooth over its rough spots, like the awkward parrying mechanics, imprecise hit boxes, and messy camera angles that come as a result of being unable to lock onto enemies. That’s because No Straight Roads stays true, above all, to its themes.

If it's clearly imperfect on many levels, No Straight Roads still manages to make us happy with its clever use of music and its colorful world.

Impeccable in its soundtrack, offering some inspired boss fights and really enjoyable to play, No Straight Roads is therefore convincing in its core proposition, except for a few readability concerns during more heavy clashes visually and soundly.

No Straight Roads succeeds in blending its unique art style and wonderful soundtrack with its gameplay mechanics. However, those same mechanics often face annoying issues that hinder the flow of combat.

The musical dystopia of No Straight Roads is the way Metronomik uses to face the authoritarianisms as a whole. Themed boss fights and beautiful art style create a potentially explosive recipe, but the monotony of the enemies' attacks and the low quality of the platforming negatively affect the experience.

While No Straight Roads‘ floaty combat occasionally frustrates, its strong sense of self is commendable. Terrific art direction and musical composition add flourish to a game that otherwise may have been too easy to miss out on.

Not bad, especially as far as the story is concerned. A good concept, but it isn't enough on its own and No Straight Roads falters a bit in its execution. Dumb AI is the main culprit, but the fact that the actions on screen aren't always synchronized well with your input certainly doesn't help matters.

No Straight Roads is such a good game in concept, but the mechanics hold back this gorgeous adventure from being something great. The world feels empty, and the level designs become a repetitive mess. However, if you can look past that, then you are rewarded with some stand-out character writing and fantastic animation work. Call me when No Straight Roads gets its own Netflix series.

Overall, No Straight Roads is an epic adventure that hits all the right notes with its design, story, and deep gameplay design. Sadly, the coop mode is a complete disaster that needs more work.

No Straight Roads is an overambitious game that tries to do many things and fails to impress with any of them. Despite fantastic world-building, loveable characters, and great voice acting the game fumbles in the narrative department and suffers from noticeable and frequent technical issues. Lacking gameplay polish also makes No Straight Roads more of a flop than a surefire hit.

While I appreciated the stylish, neon-soaked city and the fantastic soundtrack, No Straight Roads switches between brawler, platformer, and rhythm concepts, but fails to deliver a memorable experience overall.

For such a short game with so many issues, it seems crazy to recommend No Straight Roads. The story is overly drawn out, almost feeling like it was intended for a longer game, the levels are to be endured and the underlying systems meant to bring depth are just kind of there, staring at you, begging you to yell “Freebird” so it can go on a long tirade about jerks in the audience. Even the climax of the game felt tacked on. The boss fights, however, show flashes of well-designed brilliance. The game is designed to encourage experimentation to get the most of these parts, and then pushes the player into more elaborate variations that add to the challenge and fun. These parts make No Straight Roads an easy buy when it’s on sale, but it’s too bad that there’s more filler than killer here.

In some ways, No Straight Roads might have worked better as a cartoon than a video game, as its colorful characters and quirky writing outshine its somewhat by-the-numbers gameplay. Still, it has a solid presentation that makes it worth at least a weekend playthrough, and there’s plenty of charm for those looking to rock out.

No Straight Roads is a visually charming rhythm-action game that slips on its (sometimes) confusing gameplay ideas and lands on the slightly-above-average level.

It’s not a bad game, and if Metronomik updates it to address my concerns I would be glad to get back into the groove of things. The story is engaging and the music sticks in my head for hours but poor controls and bad camera angles have ruined what should be a fantastic game.

Unfortunately, everything surrounding these boss fights feels a little half-baked. The light exploration we mentioned is basically a dozen small areas, with one or two for each boss. There are collectibles and secrets around, but the in-game rewards for finding these things doesn’t feel worth it. This is particularly problematic as many of the secrets need late-level unlocks to access, and the threshold to reach them requires massive amounts of grinding.

No Straight Roads has an interesting premise and a fun story to tell, but unremarkable combat and open world exploration result in an overall mediocre experience.

No Straight Roads is a videogame first and foremost; and by videogame standards, this was a poor effort for such wasted potential.

The idea of a literal battle of the bands is a good one, and I was always keen to see what the next encounter would look like. But the lack of substance to the actual fights was invariably disappointing. Despite some impressive sights and sounds, in the end No Straight Roads has too many potholes to make its musical journey worth recommending.

Even without all these bugs, the price for the game is still questionable given the relatively short and unpolished gameplay.

Some people are saying that this game is made by a small team but if you pay attention to the credits, there is at least 100 people and several studios involved in the making of this game. It's certainly not AAA but that is a MASSIVE budget for an indie game. Additionally, the Metronomik team has assistance from a big publisher and has also received the Epic Games exclusivity grant.

With the amount of people involved as well as the pricing of the game, I feel that this game needs be compared with other action games of similar price points especially if games like Psychonauts ($20) and Child of Light ($15) are considered non-indie. I wouldn't mind paying $40 for this kind of game if the gameplay actually is good. But as it is right now, the lack of content and quality in NSR's gameplay makes it difficult to give this one a pass.

About My Final Review on Ps4 game No Straight Roads

    1) Story = 8.5/10 = Story actually pretty good at first..since its story more about revolution of the Rocks through the Edm rules...what is i impressed most on this story got subtitle text Bahasa Melayu which make us proud about this game...kinda funny as hell tho..really wish got Malay dub on this game(yea i know only DK West and Zuke got bit malay dub)...just only bit letdown for me is this game story are pretty short but its story are decent anyway

    4) Crafting Features/Skills tree = 8/10 = Their Prime weapon only like Mayday is Guitar style and Zuke is Drum style only...their Skill tree also got variant based on their tier skill lvl from lvl 1 to lvl 4 to improve their stat for more better...i basically love see the skills tree name into Bahasa Malaysia...making me laugh a lot XDD..like melee=huru hara, health point=kesihatan...Skill Zuke name:Fesyen Rambut Terbakar...Berdekah aku dibuatnya(making me Lmao) XD and the rest skill name...its really super funny see those skill in Bahasa Melayu...wondering who make that sub text language Bahasa Malaysia is Champion of Malaysia haha
