The spectacular soundtrack and visual design immediately sold me on this game. The actual gameplay isn't anything really revolutionary, but the music and visuals elevate it and make it all worth it.

Solid debut game from Metronomik. The game combines great music and unique rhythm-based action/beat 'em up, coupled with sweet-looking visual design that looks like love-child of Jet Set Radio and Music Album Cover. My only wish is the game to have longer story.

When I got the game I was very curious because I didn't know much else besides being a platform game with a sort of boss rush mechanic, but in the end it's a very good game.

The characters are fantastic, they are so charming and enjoyable to watch, the animations are great and the faces so expressive. Also the bosses are quite unique and I really enjoy all them, being some stereotypes of today's music industry (The DJ, the vocaloid, the child prodigy, the boyband, and the "Lady Gaga") but still have enough personality to make them enjoyable to watch. What's even great here is that, as much as the NSR are the villain here, the game really doesn't side with anyone and there's even a great message at the end of the game that really wants to say that "all types of music are valid and as good!"

So that's why I want to be brutally honest here and say that as much as I love this game, it's very hard to recommend it as it is due to the annoying amount of bugs that can ruin the game.

Now, the ps4 version overall works fine, didn't have any major game-breaking bugs so far and it's overall functioning and even managed to reach the end of the game, but the problem starts when you try to play and do other things, as well as some people having worse bugs than me: currently the only major bug I have is the inability to unlock perfect parry mode but I heard of people having black screens, while for me the boss energy bar was all white. The game itself seems to work overall fine, but that's because I got lucky, and I can't say you if you buy it, will have the same luck.

Because of this, I would recommend caution when buying this game: the game is overall cheap too, only 40 euros to me, so it is worth the price at least, but if you're the unlucky one who was unfortunate enough to get a game breaking bug, then it's either restarting the game, wait for a patch, or give up...

If the game had no bugs, I would've easily given this game a full 8/10 because it still does have some other small flaws - the game is very short, finished it in less than 8 hours, and some fights in higher difficulties don't seem to be very balanced either. But once this game gets fully fixed, it'll be an amazing ride with no straight roads!

Also wish it was longer.

Hope the team pitches up the bugs cause this was a pretty good game over all, the gameplay while simple is pretty good.

The soundtrack is the best I've heard this year and worth it alone.

And the characters and writing is are pretty great and colorful, booming with personality.

And it would be a shame for the bugs to ruin it as minor as they are. Not the best game of all time but better then a few other games this year.

Combat is stiff and clunky. Hitting enemies feels like you are hitting a rock. They don't have any pain animation or hit feedback. They just continue doing whatever they are doing while you are hitting them which makes the gameplay feel really unsatisfying. Movement is also not tight and the jumping is floaty. The camera is fixed during battles and often placed at poor angles that looks cool to watch but doesnt play very well. One of the main mechanics in this game is that you can play music to transform objects but you don't really do much with this mechanic. There are not many objects that you can transform. Most of the time, the transformed objects will either shoot something or do something that is not clearly explained to the player - either way they will do some damage to the enemies. It's not as creative as say, Nintendo games where you must use the the core mechanics to solve puzzles. Here there are no puzzles to solve, you just need to hit everything. There also isn't much gameplay involving rhythm - sure the enemies all attack to the beat but that's about it.

There's also a city hub which you are supposed to explore that feels very weird. The game is called No Straight Roads but all of the roads in the city are straight. The whole city is basically one straight path from start to end. There also isn't much to do in the city unlike other games where you can buy items, help npcs, play mini games, find secrets etc. Wish there was more more stuff you can do in the city that could expand on the world building. In local multiplayer mode, the camera only focuses on the first player which means that the second player cannot explore the city.

Not to mention, the game is very buggy and unfinished. Although a lot of the bugs are visual, it really detracts from the experience because I would expect more polish from a $40 game. In almost every stage, there's always objects clipping against walls, textures that look muddy and objects popping in while missing vfx. In some cases, cutscene and dialogue audio is out of sync and sometimes the game crashes. Some gameplay sequences end abruptly leaving you to wonder whether there was supposed to be more but was cut out.

The level designs are also very bad, expecially for the security levels. A lot of the segments are repeated and the placement of the props feels awkward. Like for example, there are trees on top of a concrete floor, spotlights appearing out of nowhere, street lights not arranged properly, giant props that are not meant for human-size characters and many more. It looks like the level designers just randomly put props around the levels without thinking. The lighting is also very rough and the colors are off in certain sections. For example, the Sayu stage on the first platform, you can tell that the color saturation is very different from the rest of the stage. In addition, a lot of the levels have this extremely flashy colors and mirror-like reflective floors which makes it very difficult to focus on the gameplay.

Overall, this game is either a hit or miss with some players. If you play the game for the music, visuals and the story, you might have a good time. For me, its a miss though. Because I prefer a much better gameplay when I'm playing a game and I expected more from this game. Like many people said, this game actually looks more fun to watch on YouTube than it is to play. Also it would be better if the game is $20 instead of $40.

Some people are saying that this game is made by a small team but if you pay attention to the credits, there is at least 100 people and several studios involved in the making of this game. It's certainly not AAA but that is a MASSIVE budget for an indie game. Additionally, the Metronomik team has assistance from a big publisher and has also received the Epic Games exclusivity grant.

With the amount of people involved as well as the pricing of the game, I feel that this game needs be compared with other action games of similar price points especially if games like Psychonauts ($20) and Child of Light ($15) are considered non-indie. I wouldn't mind paying $40 for this kind of game if the gameplay actually is good. But as it is right now, the lack of content and quality in NSR's gameplay makes it difficult to give this one a pass.

I´ve seen a few critics that went over the theme that only the enemies followed the rithym of the music and not the playable characters, but i think that´s kinda annoying on a 3D game. Kinda restrictive in a way, having so many ways to confront some attacks (like using habilities, for example).
I found it a really solid game. I will play it again as soon as I can.

The colorful graphics add to the charm of the entire world, and most of the cast has eye-catching designs that make even the minor characters memorable. As for the soundtrack, there's a huge variety of genres, from rock to classical to EDM, all with plenty of remixes to keep things fresh on replay. This game even managed to make a rap battle sound appealing, I can assure you that's no easy task!

The story also managed to exceed my expectations: it's nothing extremely complex or surprising, I'm sure most players would see a lot of its twist coming, but it's still functional and still manages to provide many humorous and surprisingly heartfelt moments. I'll also give props to the voice acting for this: the VAs' performances aren't perfect, but they managed to inject a lot of charm into the game, it kinda ends up giving the feel of an old-style PS2 videogame in that regard.

The gameplay is a bit of a mixed bag: the rhythm-focused battle system is something I hadn't seen in videogames before, and it manages to provide some unique and challenging boss battles which are definitely the highlight of the game. The in-between parts, unfortunately, tend to lag behind: they're functional as links between the boss battle, and they manage to provide interesting story tidbits and characterization, but aside from that there's not much to do in the overworld. There are also the occasional bugs and glitches, as expected from a company's first game, but the developers have already confirmed there's a patch in the works for them, so I don't consider it something worth docking points over: the bugs are relatively minor, at least the ones I've seen in the PS4 version, and don't majorly impact gameplay.

Overall, if you want a fun and short game with memorable bosses and soundtracks, I can't recommend this game enough: if you play this, you're definitely in for a good time!

There are 5 main artists here, all with their own unique feel to them which is no straight road’s best accomplishment.. its world building, its character building, its story… this is such a fun world to exist in.. I couldn’t wait to take down the next boss in this game after beating one… and in between these boss battles is a little hub world full of collectables you can use to boost your weapons or upgrade the town a bit to gather new fans.. which in turn helps you unlock game boosts and abilities in your skill tree, making it that much more important to do your best in these boss battles… as primarily this is a score chasing game, unfortunately though the gameplay isn’t nearly as great as the rest of the game and its presentation is…
on your way to each boss is a series of security levels, here youll take on robots that attack to the beat of the song, but it really is just an unengaging button mashing fest from each floor until you eventually get to the boss, and this is no straight roads biggest flaw, the gameplay, the combat, the platofmring.. it’s all a dud.. youre bashing square, occasionally shooting enemies in the distance and collecting power cells to upgrade the hubworld which is these sections saving grace… I enjoy the collecting more than I do every other aspect outside of the boss battles, and even the platforming is annoying thanks to a lack of any camera control… thankfully though these lackluster levels are worth getting to for the grand finale, the boss battles…
As a score chasing game, its all about score.. so this isn’t really a game that sets out to give you a challenging boss to beat, but rather beat this boss in the fastest time taking the least amount of damage as possible, a even if you fail youre given the option to continue from that spot but forfitting any chance of a great score, which means lower amount of fans earned by the end.. but I feel this sortve defeates the purpose.. the only point of getting a good score is to get more fans so that you can be more powerful, but whats the point of being powerful if you have infinite continues to get through the games story…
really making all of the skill tree and rpg systems in this game pretty pointless…
Overall though no straight roads is a plesent surprise, it’s a unique experience with a great world worth visting, and some of the best characters this generation of games has to offer,
    I give no straight roads
    a 7.5/10

the game has really funny jokes, good story in general, awesome art style and wonderful character design, although the gameplay was fun but the it was too simple or superficial

Felt like this was an ok game to enjoy but much too short and doesn't have enough value if for a full price game

Love the characters, dynamic is cool. The music was consistent and bangers. I saw the ending coming though but the game is unrated

intro: An underrated game. It's like a simplified psychonauts 2 more focused on music.

The good stuff: the music is nice, the writing is good and will surprise you with how deep, realistic, and relatable it can be contrary to the childish looks n voices in the game. i personally love the art style, especially the character dialogue moments, they use a wide range of high quality art for

The good stuff: the music is nice, the writing is good and will surprise you with how deep, realistic, and relatable it can be contrary to the childish looks n voices in the game. i personally love the art style, especially the character dialogue moments, they use a wide range of high quality art for the characters. the main hub is like disneyland, its pretty. Finally, the fighting maps look good, and the game overall feels well structured.

What could have been improved: i think the game could have been a bit more polished, some minor bugs. the combat was ok, but not very deep. the "purple shots" were confusing because you have to parry at, what felt to me like, a later time than the screen would suggest. a parry to the robots would have been nice, because the dodge was not very effective/fun to use.

Conclusion: This game is about the story of a charming, compatible, duo that fight against djs, pianists, and male pop bands to get NSR rid of the government - because they censor rock and deprive the city of electricity. It is also about brotherly love, break ups, accepting defeat, fighting against greater powers, and much more. along the way, the music is truly great, and what is great is that the fighting areas are as varied as the music, there is Pop music, EDM, classical piano solo music, Rock music, and hiphop. The price and length are correct. I give the game 72/100

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No straight roads is a game I recommend to people who love music the ending where the character kliff turns on you it’s a taste of a masterpiece everyone should play it and love it. My favorite character is mayday very passionate gotta say my type of girl. You have to beat these people who are apart of NSR which does edm music you are a indie rock band who got humiliated by the NSR so you go back home or try to them the power goes out for a little bit then mayday and zuke decide to go and hijack all of the stages. It’s a really fun game kind of hard to do the hand part but other wise then that it’s fun. Go play it. Expand

No Straight Roads is a big and colorful musical experience with heavy JRPG influences that lets you fight the man, give power to the people of Vinyl City and bring joy, all with the sweet power of rock and roll.

No Straight Roads has fantastic visuals, a phenomenal soundtrack, and lovable characters. It's a shame that the rest of the game doesn't hold up as well but I didn't regret my time with the game and will be replaying the boss fights many more times thanks to the fantastic music.

No Straight Roads looks great, sounds great, and has great characters- but it has major gameplay issues that bring down the whole experience.
