Jeese there's some sad people in the world today, I don't know what to say to you.
I think nms is a victim of the hype train, it stopped at your platform and you got on.
The exploration is high in the game, new planets animals, places people etc. You have to grind materials to leave move from planet to planet or system to system, which is fine because it encourages new discoveries.

Everyone complaining about bugs, most got fixed day 1 patch, let alone day 2.
I don't understand what people wanted from this game or what they were expecting, space games weren't ever for everyone.I'm giving it a ten it deserves the critics review of a seven but it definitely doesn't deserve a 5.

It's a real shame that so many people don't get the relaxing nature of NMS. The whole point is exploration and I love the randomness of the planets. Yes the crafting system is a little confused but not that much. Not much goes on on each planet but what were you expecting? Thriving cities each with it's own unique set of assets? Be reasonable: its a PS4 not a super computer. Yes theIt's a real shame that so many people don't get the relaxing nature of NMS. This is not the game for the COD generation as this requires patience and a little role play on behalf of the player. Its a pity that this game pushes so many boundaries yet it will be remembered for what it doesn't have rather than the imagination and freedom that it does have.

Don't listen to the negative reviews, the game is original, fresh and addictive if you like exploration and discovery... usual negative reviews comes from people that are so used to play the same formula for years... I can honestly say this is one of the best gaming experiences I've had in the last decade, cannot stop playing it.

ACTUALLY a masterpiece. A very true life simulation. It doesn't hold your hand or make you feel like you are god, THANKFULLY. There is beauty and exploration and wisdom in it, that is as good or better than anything else ever made in the video game genre.

I'm enjoying the game right now even if I think it's a little repetitive. But that's not a real problem, this game and the technology they created to construct such a universe, deserve much more than a hundred of zeros here, given by (non-players, opposite console fans, no-life people, extremists : choose the most accurate).

I was not going to write a review here, and if I'll have to, I'll give the game a deserved 7. The game is so unfairly bashed... it's fun to explore, graphics are good enough, and you know what? On my very first planet, I got MOUNTAINS and CAVES to explore (yes, these things are said "non-existent" by the "0 to 5"-people).

Give the game a chance, it is really atypical and very pleasant to travel.

I get the distinct impression that a huge amount of negative posts are from people who have clearly NOT PLAYED THE GAME!! There is far more to this game than simply mining for materials and upgrading things. Or some people just don't 'get' the game. It's not a space battle, FPS, all action fest. It's a very clever, deep and somewhat emotional game. How would you feel if you were the only one of your race in the galaxy with the slightest 1 in a million chance of seeing anybody again?

For those of you of a certain age, NMS is the glorious child of Captain Blood and Elite!! I've been playing for a couple of hours now and I've already discovered loads of new species and different flora and fauna and uploaded them to earn some units. I've learnt a tiny amount of an alien language. I've become a friend of a particular race of aliens which means I get info from them. I've built my hyperdrive and visited a new start system. I've bought and sold stuff on the intergalactic market, I visited a space station and I've just broken into a disused plant to steal some blueprints. I had to 'blow the bloody doors off' to get in which alerted the sentinels which meant I had to hide in a tunnel until they disappeared!!

From what I've seen so far this game is simply amazing and looks fantastic (if you landed in the middle of the Sahara desert you'd think earth was pretty dull!!). Each planet I've visited has looked and felt completely different. Some have just been rocky with very few animals, where as some have had huge areas of plants and trees, with bizarre hopping creatures, massive caves to explore and loads and loads of materials to mine. For me I think this is going to be my next Elder Scrolls On-Line which I spent over 100 hours playing!

I've given it 10 to hopefully boost the score because this game deserves it. No game should get a 10 as no game is perfect. So I'd probably have given it a 9 if there weren't so many morons about.

My life was going pretty good until I bought a used PT Cruiser. I mean I know how people look at them now, but a few years ago when they first came out I though they looked kind of cool. Well, I got caught up in PT Cruiser fever and I bought a used purple one.

It was OK for the first three months, but then there seemed to be some sort of cultural shift and PT Cruisers were now for losers. But I couldn't afford anything else and the trade-in value just plummeted. So, I had people pointing and laughing and I was embarrassed to pick up guys and girls for dates for fear they would hate my car. So I ending up staying home most of the time. And then I got depressed and I was in a really dark place.

All because of that dam car!

    Anyway, enjoying the game.

A marvel. A wonderful game with a beautiful look, I didn't want to go to sleep. This title, I think, will be engaging to gamers who enjoy exploring without much hand holding. It's a bold experiment, there aren't many devs making procedurally generated titles these days and with any luck Hello Games has shown the others what can be made with this technique.

Its vast playground, might offer endless possibilities. Repetitiveness is inevitable in such a large worldmap although i am sure devs are going to increase variety in terms of point of interests/events etc. The game is out only for a couple of days and people started to claim they have seen everything... Your brain cannot even visualize 10 million beans while there are 10 million times more places to go.

This game is a must buy for people that likes exploring and chilling out while enjoying scenery. Settlers will need to wait a bit more since the devs said construction will be available in later content patches.

I do not recommend this game if you only like action and narrative focused games.

There is almost infinite things to do in this game , and its great fun, but the fact you can do it all in VR is what elevates this game to a 10/10. Just like RE7 its a great game on its own , but when you are able to feel like you are in the world and the sense of immersion and atmosphere is that realistic, it elevates the whole experience. the only negative I could give the game today is that it is a bit Blurry on PSVR, ive seen many other games look much sharper on PSVR which makes me wonder in they are taking advantage of the PS4 Pro hardware yet.. Each and every element you mine serves some sort of purpose in the game world. Some players may wish to mine and build a better suit and ship. Others may want to loot these resources from large AI controlled ships in space. Some may want to become a trader and sell their resources to earn more money. Some players may simply wish to wander around this literal universe. You can do all these things and much more. (You can name your own planets, systems, plants, and animals. Other players may also come across places where you've left your mark).
There is interesting lore in this game that I will not spoil. However I will say that the ability to learn the languages of the different races in the game is interesting. It pays off in many different ways, such as receiving crucial upgrades from a certain alien via the correct response to what they say/ask for.
At its core, No Man's Sky is an exploration game with survival elements inside of a vast universe. It is fun to play, and I cannot wait to continue playing it after I finish this review.

That being said you have to take what has been said about this game on both sides with a grain of salt. It may be breathtaking in scope and size but as far as I have seen it's mostly the "same" on the planets (I've only been to about 5 so far.). But that doesn't mean it isn't a fantastic game.

I believe they will add more as time goes on (because they said they would)

It's definitely not for everyone but the concept and gameplay as well as the epic scope warrant at least a strong seven to a light eight.

If anything, a "polarizing" game like No Man's Sky stands a testament to how deeply flawed a site like Metacritic is.

It is supposed to be an explore this, see that kind of game. I would compare it to a larger never ending survival version of Journey.

The inventory management is still a chore, but the overall gameplay falls into place when you start to understand how the game works. It's actually quite well designed and diverse.

It does have its flaws though. The whole game does feel a bit dull when it comes to npc's and wildlife. All being procedurally generated, it doesn't take long until you realize that even though things look different, they all act exactly the same. So it's basically the same animals with different looks. Same goes for NPC's. They looks slightly different from one another, but they are always the same static 3D models sitting in a chair in exactly the same position when you arrive at the space stations or outposts.

But when you start seeing the game as sortof of a table top game instead of a space RPG - then it starts working! Just imagine the NPC's as static plastic figurines who let's you do certain tasks that then enables other stuff and so on. The underlying game mechanics are certainly quite interesting and entertaining.

Landing on new planets is always enjoyable. Will there be riches? Will it be lush with forest? Are the sentinels gonna come after me? Will I find a trading outpost? So many variables make it quite enjoyable, although the potential for more is immense. So I look forward to seeing what HelloGames manage to implement in the future.

I was surprised that the masses were as interested in this game as they were when it was announced, it seemed like a pretty niche game. I can't help but feel like a lot of the negative reviews are people who the game quite simply wasn't made for.

If you are an action game junkie or someone that only ever plays AAA games, be wary, this is an independent game that got its scope blown up because of hype. It may not be your cup of tea. However, if exploring space and experiencing the scope of the universe while surviving in hostile environments and just enjoying the immersion of it all, sounds like your cup of tea, you should definitely pick it up.

The game feels complete already as a unique hybrid of MMO space game with a survival game like Minecraft or Ark. But I can imagine with the base building and other features the developer has coming and the other additions, it will become a truly engrossing experience.

I can already tell I will be putting an ungodly amount of time into this. See past the BS angry reviews by teenagers who want another COD or have unrealistic expectations of these independent developers and enjoy exploring the universe!

That type of stuff sets you back quite a bit in FO4.

And this is why NMS is so great. So far the worst that has happened, in the same situation, is that I trashed my entire inventory and named 32 different planets stuff that is mostly related to the male genitalia. There are over 65,000 unique creatures and plants, and three unique alien races that interact with the player, leading him or her on a voyage to the galactic center, or on a quest to uncover the game's hidden lore.

As the game progresses, you rebuild your starship and engage in discovery, trading or combat, all of which help you improve your starship, suit and weaponry. Each improvement allows you to travel farther and explore more dangerous worlds and new star systems in a journey whose goal is determined by you. You may follow the directions of the Atlas, the galaxy's mysterious and powerful artificial intelligence, or you may follow the advice of Nada and Polo, a Gek scientist and a Korvax priest who are investigating a strange galactic mystery. Alternatively, you may follow your own path, ignoring the game's major NPC characters and making your own story.

For those who want a mellow space exploration game that gives you new vistas every time you land on a new planet, this game may be for you. However, it is not a game for everyone. Skyrim in space this is not, nor is it a game you can play with your friends. The game is huge - literally universal in size, and seeing evidence of anyone else in the game is quite rare. Unfortunately, many people desperately wanted this game to be something it was never intended to be, hence the bad reviews. But for those of us who have realistic expectations for a relaxing game of galactic exploration, No Man's Sky has a lifetime of content.

A month into my journey with No Man's Sky, I continue to find the game fascinating every time I boot it up. There is a lot to like here, if you're the kind of player the game was intended for. The game did have some bugs at first, but there have already been a number of updates that have brought the game up to speed. The developers have committed to bringing in content that was not ready for the game's release, and they intend to add new features in free updates, showing an ongoing commitment to the game.

It truly is not a game for everybody, or even most people, but for those destined to fall to its charms, it isIn many ways the victim of its own lofty goals and optimistic hyperbole, in addition to the rigors of game development, the No Man's Sky may not be the game many people were expecting, but it is nonetheless deserving of being considered for what it is, as well as what it is not. It truly is not a game for everybody, or even most people, but for those destined to fall to its charms, it is nothing short of revelatory.

So let's begin with what it is not, which is Everything. It is not an endlessly involving, be-all-end-all, behemoth of a game. It is not a Call of Duty filling wrapped in a Skyrim tortilla and flavored with EVE Online and Star Citizen spices. It does not have 18 quintillion wholly unique worlds, with each one entirely different from the next. It is not a game that will hold your hand; it has neither the charming simplicity of a Mario game nor the soul-hardening depth of Dark Souls. It has a storyline of sorts to follow, but there is nothing genuinely world shattering. It is not Minecraft in space. It is not a multiplayer game, though the universe is shared. Nothing you ever do or see will ever be witnessed by anyone, ever, except through screen shots and the nigh impossible chance of crossing paths with another wanderer.

What it is, however, is something that is rarely seen in video games, or indeed any medium, and that is an invitation to explore and ponder. It strands you in outer space, with such an impossible distance to cover that one cannot help but relate that scale to their own existence and, if one is willing to ask such a question, ponder their own amazing insignificance, which to the best of my knowledge has rarely, if ever, been proposed in an interactive format normally focused on player empowerment. No Man's Sky is unflinching in its nihilism -- you will discover animals who will never be seen again, you will see vistas that will exist afterward only in your memory, and the game has no sympathy for the fleeting nature of your existence within it. It is a game built simultaneously on hope and hopelessness -- the anticipation of a powerful moment where the stars (figuratively) align, tempered with the knowledge that this is but a temporary elation.

In less grandiose terms, one can describe No Man's Sky as a stellar walking simulator without the narrative elements. It is the high tech equivalent of exploring via the Google Maps Street View, possibly while on an illicit substance. You are not here to save this universe, merely to observe it, and contemplate.

And, admittedly, make an awful lot of very pretty desktop wallpapers.

So, no, this game is by no means for everybody, or even most people. For me, it was an avenue to introduce my young children to the concept of the universe at large, the absurd scale by which we are such an insignificant speck in both time and space that the odds of us understanding anything concrete is infinitesimal. And it has so sparked their interest that instead of reading Hello Kitty for bedtime, we have a giant book of scientific facts; instead of dolls, my daughter asked for a telescope; instead of ninjas, they want to be scientists and astronauts when they grow up.

I guess, at the end, there should be a numerical value placed on this review, but I'm torn. If a review is to be taken as an individual's personal response to a piece of art, then I would have a hard time giving No Man's Sky less than a perfect 10. The places it has taken my family, and the questions it has made me ask of myself, are invaluable. If, on the other hand, the purpose of a review is to serve as a guidepost for others, then I must more objectively temper my feelings and account for the occasional glitches and crashes, the repetitiveness of the worlds over time, and the dearth of activities beyond exploration and occasional combat and crafting; if that is the route I am to take, I would err a bit lower, as not everyone will fall under the circumstances by which the game has come to mean so much to me.

And then I say to heck with it. This game is magical, and I argue that it transcends the normal expectations of the medium. I give it a 10.

In a span of two hours, I went from: struggling to survive on an irradiated planet (I mean, F***ING STRUGGLIN'), to dodging/blasting asteroids in an asteroid belt, to trading/learning from an alien species (the Gek; frog-like beings that believe they rule the universe as the "original spawn"), to discovering new species on the ocean floor of a massive ocean planet (basically one giantIn a span of two hours, I went from: struggling to survive on an irradiated planet (I mean, F***ING STRUGGLIN'), to dodging/blasting asteroids in an asteroid belt, to trading/learning from an alien species (the Gek; frog-like beings that believe they rule the universe as the "original spawn"), to discovering new species on the ocean floor of a massive ocean planet (basically one giant coral reef). In short, this is the game I've always been waiting for. I continuously need to remind myself, "Do whatever the heck you want," because I can do anything in this massive universe, and it's awesome knowing that I'll have a completely different experience every time I play. Furthermore, that extra piece of lore is worth the 2 minute trek through the alien jungle... just saying. Small piece of advice to newcomers: find a "Trading Post," park your ship, and start exploring the local terrain for all it has to offer. Love this game. 10/10, no doubt. Expand

An amazing game that is clearly not for everyone, but it certainly is for me! Amazing planets though when you get a dull one just move on. NPC's are cool and story. Potential for amazing updates. Some worlds are just amazing. Hostile T-Rex type creature on one of my planets stalks and attacks. This game is advancing the future of gaming the way it should! Amazing!

No other console game allows me to walk on an entire planet surface, enter my ship, travel through space in real time to another planet, enter its atmosphere, land, and jump out on foor again, all of this without a single loading. On the top of that, the game offers deep survival mechanics, inventory and resource management, and overal a huge amount of content.

I liked the game when it came out (would give it a 7.5/10), but after update 1.1 i decided to start a new survival game. Survival is super chalenging and the contruction mechanics turn everything more personal.

NMS has its flaws, but it's so ambitious in scale, not even AAA devs, with their infinite resources, dare to create something similar.

9/10 on its current state, and the good news is that it will be geting better over time due to free updates.

You can choose to follow certain scripted narratives or ignore them temporarily or indefinitely. The gameplay is fairly addictive for those who like exploration, gathering resources, and unlocking mysteries.

Above all that, the game achieves what it sets out to do by creating a sense of awe and giving the player the feeling of single-handedly exploring a vast universe. It also has just enough elements and NPC's in play to keep you interested for a long time. All that with promised FREE future patches and update adding even more features which players are now anticipating. This game is a 10 for me both in premise and execution. WELL DONE HELLO GAMES. P.S. interesting lore, as you learn about the history of what happened in the past and how the galaxy came to be.

Hell, it's probably not a game for most people. But there's a lot of people out there where this might be the FIRST game that's perfect for them. It's simple: it's a very heavily economically- and scientifically-based space/ground exploration and trading game with frequent but optional space combat endeavors. While managing to stay fantastical and very sci-fi in its universal design, the game is also very realistic, and can therefore be very tedious at times, and requires you to be very intelligent in your techniques to store, trade and upgrade items, tools, ships, etc.. It's very DIY. And that's precisely why I love it so much. Now, wether or not it will hold up to hours upon hours of playing I'll have to wait and see, but at well over 10 hours in I can say that I'm not feeling any sign of losing interest.
Pretty much, think of No Man's Sky as a combination of survival mode on Minecraft with the space stage of Spore, and make it about a couple trillion times bigger, and you've got something along these lines.

Easily the Game of the Year

I have personally cancelled this game twice prior, and had only ordered the game last Friday. I received the PS4 copy, and purchased a PC copy as well after having played the game.

What a treat! This is a beautiful game that expands the horizon of whatever current technology can offer, or had been able to offer anyway. As you delve into the game, you begin to realize just how massive this game is. To be able to simply fly off in space and go to any star, is simply out of the world. The diversity in plants, animals, weather, technology, etc, I can't believe only a few people worked on this game. What a feat.

The colors in this game are amazingly well done. Hard to believe that they are randomly generated. The music and sound is even better. I imagine they are triggered by the type of environment you encounter, and the sound of grass rustling, sea breeze, and everything else is simply amazing.

Most importantly, the amazing experience this game delivers can't be put into words. Thank you Sean and the team for delivering us the game of this generation. We hope to see more of you.

It's not a 10/10 game but these reviews are ridicoulous so gave it 10 instead of 7

Simply an incredible attempt. Is it multiplayer FPS? Definitely NOT (hence the disgruntled negative reviews, and the PC launch had problems--this review is for the PS4 version).

Does it come close to giving you a world where the sky belongs to no singular human? HELL YES. There is so much packed in this game, exploration, trading, inventory management, upgrading inventory, "recipes," a slightly linear story possibility, but it allows you freedom to do what you want.
Do you want to find a story? Cool, do that.
Want to search for a planet with cute animals? Go for it!
Like flying around in space? Check, we got that B-Roll!
Want to find against dinosaur-looking animals, killing them on exotic locations? Yes, you can!
Want to fund Donald Trump to try to win the 2016 US Presidential Elections? NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOO! NO! That is TOO SPECIFIC. This game won't do that.

Pop on some acid jazz, triphop, or some ambient music in the background, put this game on, and enjoy your travels, Space Cowboy!

This is now my favourite game ever. I've played just about every moment I could since launch.

While a few mechanics could be explained in-game better than they are, once armed with the right knowledge you can settle in for some grand space exploration and some occasional laughs from the resident aliens.

The science path (scanning life forms) is quite difficult early on and the rewards really suck for it. Can take forever to track down all the animals you need for the planetary bonus which is pretty meager. So you'll need to do some some trading and or mining and or crafting on the side to stay afloat. The good news is that all of those are well implemented and money is easy to make once you know how.

Could be that not everyone will love it but I suspect you'll know if that's you or not. If you enjoy survival games and sci-fi this game is so good it might ruin your life. Especially when you land on your first planet with seriously funky wildlife - for me that was the second planet in my fifth system. Giant flying flukeworms. enormous tick monsters with tentacles everywhere, etc. etc.. That's on the edge of the galaxy too. It's supposed to get weirder closer to the center.

    Must get back to playing!

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
