Extremely fun game with a lot of care given to player choice. The plot is throwaway, the amount of loot can be anxiety inducing and it can be ridiculously difficult - although the ability to summon help makes it a little less arduous than the original. If you need a game to devour your time and deliver some outstanding combat, this is for you - 8 stars

I consider the original Nioh to be about an 8. A game with great gameplay, and an enormous assortment of missions to explore and finish. Well, Nioh 2 is bigger and better in every way. They've added large skill trees for pretty much everything, and have also greatly expanded the bestiary of Yokai you have to contend with, so it doesn't become repetitive.

    Just like the original Nioh

Just like the original Nioh though, the story is of middling quality. I never really found it or the characters to be that engaging, and there are too many overlong cutscenes where people yammer on emotionally about political or military jargon. It reminded me of Phantom Menace in this regard, just way too much tedious yapping. The Souls series is the gold standard for cutscenes; short, meaningful, and awesome to watch. Like the original Nioh, there's also something inelegant about the combat. It's just kind of spammy and imprecise sometimes. Maybe that's the cost of having fights between these super-powered individuals. Going up against giant yokai with my character's own crazy abilities, I sometimes felt like I was playing a super-hero game, and not the grounded samurai combat which I love.

Anyway, it's a good game, and a very good way to spend a large chunk of time.

This was my first time playing a game like this and i have to say it was a challenge. This game made me a stronger player having to overcome hard obstacles it brought out the best of me haven't played a game yet this year that did that to me. I am happy with my improvements in hard games like this and that is why iam giving this rating a 10 well done nioh.

To give my past experience, I have beat all souls games. Sekiro, Nioh 1, Bloodborne and as many soul likes as I can find on steam. Once you get down the timing of the burst counter then the mobs and bosses will drop. You have to ki pulse and change stances or you are not going to get anything much from the combat system. I like the challenge. I like making builds with all the gear. This is a good game for the genre. I just cant give it a 10. The levels and mobs still feel the same and I found myself feeling the repetitiveness after a few hours. I love the boss fights and how you can make about any build you want. The options are there to approach the game however you want. So if you are a souls vet or new to the genre, this game is one that should be in your library. Expand

This is what Nioh 2 does, to such an extent that I consider it the best game of the decade.
If I try really, REALLY hard to come up with flaws from the original game, all I can say is that it doesn't have Guardian Spirit leveling up, and soul matching can't get your equipment from +0 to +1.
    That's all.

Everything has been improved, from little things to bug fixes and being able to see your character when fashioning them, to the magnificent (the best even) character creation I've ever seen. Everything from the old one is here, and more, all the gear, the sets, the weapons, most of the guardian spirits. But Team Ninja just keeps on adding more and more, more weapons, more sets, more equipment, the story is longer, some of the music is actually good this time, more missions while having 1's older levels as side quests sometimes, the difficulties are improved, there are more mechanics like the Stone of Penance and the Scrolls to make your stat customization even deeper, graces, remodeling gear to better suit your playstyle. Everything is executed perfectly.

My only complaint about this game is the god awful netcode it has. Besides that, it's perfection. I was fully immersed, and still am to this day after putting in a full year into this game. I haven't even finished the last difficulty yet because the underworld is so satisfying and fun to do. The gear can go to +120 now and the underworld has 999 floors. It's an endless joyride, from start to finish, from the beginning of the story to the impressively handled continuation of 1's story. Everything is in here, you don't even need to play 1 besides for its story because Nioh 2 does everything, but better.

Truly one of the best games of the decade, and definitely the best of this generation of video games.

Make sure not to rush things and just button mash, because It really encourages learning the right moment to go all in on your offense and when to stay defensive until an enemy leaves itself

The addition of slotting Yokai abilities and having three different transformation forms to affect your overall build and play-style opens up the ability to replay the game in different ways and styles.

Combat is fast paced and feels amazing and much more smoother than the original games. Yokai abilities and burst move counters add strategic moves to your play style to make combat flow differently and help the player explore new combos and builds. The story, while not something life changing, is more honed in on historic Japan and seats you in a real historic period with the fantastical and eerie atmosphere of yokai and demons. Enjoyable characters and decent story.

This title adds an immense amount of new Yokai and enemies to fight, and almost half of the missions of the game will always keep you on your toes by introducing a new enemy type and weaving them into the mission map in a clever way. Nioh 2 is your standard Nioh package, but with so much more polish, possibility, gameplay and content. This game is a must have on the PS4 - it is worth every cent!

The new counter mechanic and yokai transformation is amazing, have a good history and you play in a important era of Japan with famous characters (even more than Nioh 1), the character customization is fine but you will be in a full armor almost the entire game so is not that important.

The combat obviously didn’t need to change much, but a lot of the enemies seemed just like rehashes of old ones. I still enjoyed it, but on my 2nd play through it felt more like a chore. I was just gunning for the platinum trophy and wanted to get it out of the way. Regardless, still worth playing.

It is a return to form for Team Ninja too; having made the masterpiece Ninja Gaiden Black but unable to repeat that originality or quality. It accomplishes what the genre and Team Ninja have been struggling to do:

    - Remain challenging without being unbalanced / unfair.
    - Bring tighter faster paced combat requiring focus and reflexes.
    - Create new ideas / gameplay elements
    - Be a fun game that is original and not stale

Nioh 2 has mediocre reviews, has dreadful character creation/tutorials/1st level, and the first one was an unremarkable Souls knockoff. There's a lot of things that could dissuade you from playing it. I almost didn't buy it and I didn't like it at first. I understand the bad reviews. However, once I got past all that, I realized there was more to this game that meets the eye.

Make no doubt about it, the game is challenging. The new gameplay elements are hard to understand and poorly explained. The game is fair though, and captures what was good about DS, I think. Though unforgiving and unaccommodating, it gives you the tools to completely slaughter everything in your path once you have mastered them. A seemingly endless improvement to your skills and huge learning curve that pays off. The gameplay has a lot of depth to it and is satisfying.

The weak inventory system, unremarkable and random items, lam story, chore like side missions of the first Nioh are still here and i find them cons. No game builds beautiful dream like horror/fantasy worlds like dark souls, and Nioh isn't close.

On the other hand, never have QTEs (in the form of ki and demon parrys) been implemented so well and the action-rpg elements are great.

Amazing. Loved both Nioh games. Easily the best souls-like series out there. I have played all of the Dark Sould games, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and other souls like games like Lords of the Fallen, The Surge, and Code Vein. I have to say that Nioh 2 is outstanding.

Just like the first Nioh it's difficult starting out until you get into a rhythm with the different combat styles. All in all, as a 'casual player' I'm enjoying the challenge of it and loving the changes they've made in Nioh 2. IMO even if I hadn't liked it I can still appreciate the work that went into making the game, but I'm sure all the crybabies wouldn't know anything about that.

An improvement in every way . Nioh 1 had some issues but nioh 2 has addressed them and gone further with a better skill system new enemies and a revamped online system. Combat is punishing but fair and at times will make you sit back and think what can i learn from that death. The character creator is top notch and will absorb a lot of your time

Nioh 2 treads a lot of the same ground as the original 2017 game. You play through several missions, defeating an array of human and Yokai enemies, culminating in a final challenge in the form of one of the game's many challenging boss battles.
The missions themselves are somewhat linear; there isn't a lot of room for exploring off the critical path, though you'll find no shortage of shortcuts to make traversing areas easier. The boss battles are varied and each offer a unique, often vexing challenge.

The game's main drawback in my opinion, and what seems to be a source of much of the criticism on display in the user ratings, is the especially cruel barrier to entry, even by the standards of a souls-like game. Whilst the challenges never quite rise to the difficulty of the original game (in my opinion at least), there isn't a well defined difficulty curve and the game certainly pulls no punches from the offset.

If you go in knowing this, and you're able to battle frustration long enough to push through without throwing in the towel and eating Nioh 2 a zero, the experience can be considerably rewarding.

What I still don't like about the game is still there - endless grinding loot, the story is god awful, and the music is just average. I think if it had better music, amazing storyline, and tweak the equipment and better management system it would be a lot more fun!! I have skipped the story since its really dumb and boring. Unlike Dark Souls and Bloodborne - their stories are more unique and interesting with AMAZING SOUND TRACKS and much easier and manageable equipment system. I think this is what separates it from a Masterpiece vs. A great game!

While I haven't finished the game (Some of the main missions are very long without dying), I can't stop playing when I'm off work.

Great music, atmosphere, new skill changes, and story if you like that in these type of games. Giving a 10/10 for gameplay, sound, multiplayer and customization. The only thing that is kind of disappointing is the Yokai are the basically the same as the first game with a few additions.

So for those who claim it's too hard, be patient and it gets better. The beginning is harder than the rest of the game. Like most games, you start as a weakling and later achieve god-like status.

I have seen a lot of people complaining about it being too difficult and unforgivable but that is due to people trying to play this game like dark souls.
It is not a from software game, do not go play this game thinking that you are playing the same type of game, it is more similar to an action character game than a soulborne game .

I didn't find it that hard, but that's because I just played the first Nioh a couple months ago, so kinda knew what to do. Overall, they've definitely improved already great gameplay/fighting experience from the first Nioh.

The reason I didn't give it a 10/10 is simply because it felt like Nioh 1.5 (or 1.75?) instead of a 2.0 brand new installment. They need to be a bit more brave on Nioh 3 and really try some new things. A lot of reused characters/enemies/locations/UI/story flow in this one.M any locations followed the same pattern... always a locked gate right by the first shrine...or ladder kicking down... that sort of thing. Locations need more uniqueness and variety. Take another lesson from From Software, Koei. :-) FromSoft levels are amazing. That said, all the upgrades and additions were well thought out and a big improvement. I just wish they pushed to be a little more unique and change up UI, locations, Story flow... but overall, it's a really fun experience.

Yet it is draged down by poor balancing, and no I am not talking about how normal enemies early on can 1-shot you, I am fine with that.
What I am talking about is the bosses. 1st boss is difficult but beatable, so that is fine. 2nd boss is way, way, way to difficult to the point where you have to be a) really damn good b) grind until you cry c) be lucky. After the 2nd boss every single boss is easy until you end up in area 5 where you have yet another a b or c boss.
There is however a way for them to fix it, and that is called balancing the damn bosses. Make some easier, make some more difficult, if done right this is a 10/10 game for many people. Done wrong, or left as is, this game will be a 1/10 and even 0/10 for far to many, and rightfully so since there are no need to beat people over the head with their difficulty as early in the game as they do.

What makes a good souls-like game good is that it feels difficult but fair throughout the entire game. Where Nioh 2 therefor fail is that it has moments where it feels unfair instead of difficult.

What makes Nioh 2 not as good as a Souls game, to me at least, is just how unfair some of the bosses seem to me. For numerous bosses, especially towards the end I found myself spending hours and hours, expending almost all of the elixir's and sacred rice that I'd built up just trying to beat a boss. Of the last 6 or so I think four of them must have taken me at least 3 or 4 hours each of dying. Something about the boss mechanics doesn't fair to me.

If I played through it again I'd make sure to cash in more souls earlier to make sure I leveled up quicker, but that's a lesson learnt.

So overall a great game that I'd recommend, but not as good as Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne or Sekiro.

The systems are pleasantly crunchy and there are a ton to dig into, the moment-to-moment fights get my blood pumping, and the artwork and theming are all spot-on. Too much of a good thing is too much of a good thing, but Nioh 2 is exactly the right amount.

Nioh 2 does what a good sequel should. It capitalizes on the best parts of its predecessors while providing new content and mechanics to advance the franchise. While the story structure and level design are largely the same, added weapons, more build depth, and new combat mechanics all enhance what the game has to offer. It doesn't always hit the mark perfectly, but it's a solid addition to the series. And let's face it, being a samurai is awesome.
