The soundtrack is one of the best ones I ever experienced in a game or movie. It is the highest point of this game that surely is a master piece.

Soundtrack is amazing. Visual style is perfect. The story is deep and sad yet giving you a hope.
But all those words are pretty useless when describing this game separately because only in union they meld into this Masterpiece from true master of this century, named NieR: Automata.

Thank you, Yoko Taro, for giving me an opportunity to touch this piece of art.

Graphics: Su Ps4 behaves really well, never had a problem or a bug, stable frame rate, breathtaking views and spectacular animations.
Sound: amazing soundtrack and general sound perfectly performed.

Saying anything about this game’s story would probably be considered spoiler, so I’m not gonna touch on that. Just know that it’s really, really good. The only problem I can find with this game, has to do with its performance. It runs pretty bad on underpowered machines, and can struggle on high end computers as well. It may not include the most sensical story or compelling characters, but its frenzied combat -- coupled with beautiful visuals and a stunning soundtrack – make it too much fun to pass up.

Yoko Taro is a name I will forever remember, for delivering a true masterpiece, my game of the generation, of any generation thus far that I've experienced. Nier transcends gaming, elevating it to an undescribable experience.

I'm trying to craft a review in the traditional sense to be objective and rational, to state the pros and cons like I normally do, but it's beyond that. I'm listening to Keiichi Okabe's amazing music (Weight of the World) while typing this and I cannot tell you, dear reader, the number of times his music brings me goosebumps, tugging at my heartstrings, full of melancholy, hope and so hauntingly beautiful.

I wish everyone in the world could play this. This has to be experienced, not watched. It engaged multiple sensory experiences in me, I can't even begin to explain it. I didn't even realize I played 50hrs of it at the end. I just deleted it to make space for Red Dead Redemption 2 but immediately regretted it. Never has a game left a gaping hole in my heart after finishing it. I'm playing Prey as my next game in my playlist but I cannot bear to go on. My mind, my heart, is still in Nier's desolate and heartbreaking world. I need time to recover.

I am regretting so much not buying this Day One, and not getting the Collector's Edition. I'll be buying anything with Nier Automata on it; books, art, vinyl, music, everything. The newly released book by Yoko Taro in English will be in my mail today and man I cannot wait to experience Nier's story again.

I implore you, play Nier Automata. Experience it for yourself. You'll be in tears at the end, the true end.

I just feel like this is a game made specifically for 13 year olds. From the "shallow-philosophical" story of 2 emo robots, from the fact that you see 2B's panties all the time, to the boring hack and slash and loot. It all made for a very bland experience, in a world and environment and concept with the potential for much more.

Really, I can't get it how this is only getting 9s and 10s. Seems like people no longer play a game to have a challenge, to actually have some dopamine going in their brains, no, they just want an overpriced interactive Hollywood movie.

For the most part, music is not that important to me and as long as I can zone the music out then I’m fine with it. This was so bad that I couldn’t do that and I would say that five minutes into the game, I had to mute the game music.

The combat itself, I didn’t like the way that the cameras kept shifting from an overhead view to a 2-D plane to 3-D plane. I know its a way to shake up the combat but the only plane that I enjoyed was the 3-D plane because that felt like the most natural in this type of game.

Finally, what turned me off from this game was, I was on a bridge and I had to fight two Compound Miter Saw things and it wasn’t fun trying to dodge those and I ended getting stuck in between both of them and I died. Which this is a fun game where if you die within the first half hour of the game then you have to start the whole thing over again because that’s how I like to play video games. Redoing things that weren’t that much fun to begin with.

I have sent this game back to Gamefly and I will not be playing this game again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is 100% "okay" and that's really the best thing I can say.

After playing for 30 hours, doing all the quests i cared to do (about 83%), doing the main 5 endings (ABCDE) and enjoying and hating aspects of it, i just thought that "this game was ok". Really, it was just okay, especially when there are so many flaws - both gameplay and story-wise - that just don't really make it that great.

For instance the combat is fun! Repetitive but fun, really REALLY repetitive but very fun, and I always loved using 2B for the fighting, which was smooth and easy to use but too bad the controls are utter crap and the lock on is awful.

You also get to control 9S in the second playthrough, who is a scanner (aka hacker) and can kill most enemies with ease making the combat easier against tough enemies. Too bad that in exchange for that 9S fights like ASS, having the worst and most unreliable combat ever that I had to rely on the pod's gun to do damage. And the hacking is also repetitive too - what a surprise!

The story is well done too: I had legitimate times where it surprised me and it had some very good scenes, especially the last endings.
I won't lie when the game tried its best it did impress me with some deep scenes and sad ones too but at the same time it's ruined by a LOT of scenes that try SO HARD to make you feel sad it was hilarious.
I wish I was kidding but that's actually how the game tries to make you feel sad, with forced scenes of death and dialogues ending with ellipses all the time.
The only thing missing was a sign saying "Feel something", which I did: an urge to laugh.

Some characters are well done too - I particularly loved Pascal and 9S (the start) - and I was legitimately curious to see how the game would end, but unfortunately most of the rest are either boring (2B) not well developed (Devola/Popola, Anemone, A2)) or just done there for that brief moment of sadness I was talking about (the random chats with your operator, quest related characters, etc).

And the story itself...it's really not unique: it's basically a story of how androids and machine try to emulate humans and how they learn the meaning of existing. I don't dislike that though because it's HOW you tell a story that matters, but here's my problem with it:

You can switch anyone with the binomial Android/Machine with anything and not much would change - besides the obvious stuff - and honestly there's not even much of that: the androids act like humans, the machines act like humans, everyone acts like humans...so why was it necessary to turn them into machines? It would've been more interesting if they were SLOWLY turning into humans, discovering feelings, having sadness, ANYTHING but they already know that stuff! They even say "Feelings are prohibited" because they KNOW feelings are a pain to deal with - which is true...WHICH IS WHY IT MAKES NO SENSE WHY ROBOTS WOULD HAVE FEELINGS, IT ONLY HINDERS THEIR ACTIVITY, AND IT EVEN SHOWS LATER IN A QUEST WITH PASCAL, YOU DUMB MORONS!
There is a reason why the goddamn terminator had no feelings: if he did he would be freaking out whenever he terminated someone!
In other words, this plot makes no sense and whereas they could've made some badass robots that start to learn what it means to have feelings, to slowly learn what it actually means to be human, including its weaknesses, but by giving them feelings right away they don't become more relatable: they just become annoying ****
I've met real women with bigger balls than 2B and 9S! I'm not exaggerating!

So...do I recommend it? Yeah sure: it's an okay game with good combat, a pretty decent story (which is more than can I say about Square Enix nowadays) and it has a good amount of pros and cons that beat each other out, making the experience equally balanced.

I guess what makes the game better is the music which is good (not a fan myself) and the voice acting is QUITE amazing, probably one of the best of latest times and helps following the plot better even during its hiccups.

But best game ever? not even close, at least for me, a spot taken for Berseria who not only made me sad for actual good reasons, it also had bits and pieces of existence too that were better explained and not too pretentious either.

Overall I can recommend, get it on a discount if you're curious and enjoy/hate it.
I did my part and I also got my saves deleted for others' sake because even if I didn't enjoy it, others might. That's the great thing about opinions.

I simply don't understand what's so special about it and frankly I still prefer the original Nier way more than this.

It seems that the developers really wanted to be original here and whilst they have succeeded, they may have hindered the game in some ways. My biggest gripe is with having to travel from place to place. In my first few hours of the game there was no quick way of doing this and it quickly became cumbersome and monotonous to complete quests.

This leads me to another frustrating factor, in that the quests and general narratives do not flow very well; even in the early periods of the game I was left wondering where to go next or how to progress the story, making me feel like I was wasting time. Having to resort to online guides and videos makes the game feel more like a DIY project rather than fun or a pleasure.

Would I recommend this game? At a decent price, yes, but bear in mind the issues delineated above. The high review scores this game has gotten has me very confused indeed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I find its lack of self-awareness and its lack of factual backup to the story, quite reprehensible. There's so much I can rant and rave about, down to finite details.

NieR: Automata is made by Square Enix and Platinum Games.
It features a multitude of gameplay mechanics, and those who love nostalgia may initially get their kicks and such.
Normally I'd say "Until they grow tired of it and realize how worthless and bland it is" but it is quite clear that people are so delusional that they are no longer qualified to judge what a good game is.

    Where to start?
    Let's break down this story.
So, starting with the story setting, and we already have problems.
Basically, aliens arrived on Earth and invaded.
"In the year 11945 during the 14th Machine War (some time after the 4th ending of the original NieR), Earth has suddenly been invaded by extraterrestrial life forms, armed with weapons known as “bio-machines.”

Facing imminent destruction, mankind had no choice but to flee the Earth and take refuge on the moon. In an attempt to reclaim their planet, humanity formed a resistance army of android soldiers.

To break through this deadlock and reclaim their homeworld, humanity sends the “YoRHa” – an infantry unit of state-of-the-art androids – into battle.

An arduous battle between androids and bio-machines unfolds on an uninhabited, barren planet. And who knows what forgotten truths are revealed in war…"

Two things. A)This gets a literal retcon closer to the end of the game. B)Biomachines are physically and universally impossible. None of the materials known to the entire universe allow metal based alloys to allow biological life. Constantly, you are FORCED to watch as BS goes down.
Stuff like machines creating humanoid machines (which is literally just androids, of which does not need the overt attempt at a moral and philosophical gray zone) is physically, chemically, biologically IMPOSSIBLE.
Here's the thing about this game ladies and gentlemen. This entire game is a pseudophilosophical ATTEMPT at commentary over what makes someone or something "human". Both sides show this shallow attempt as well. Pascal reading Nietzsche, Androids having emotions and desires, biomachines making humanoids, said humanoids reading religious and historical diatribe to further solidify of how 3Deep5Me this game is.
The aliens who invaded? Already dead. The killers? Adam and Eve. I kid you not, those are the names of the two machines. If you cringed in disgust or annoyance, I can't blame you. It is so transparent about how cool and edgy and meaningful they wish to be.
It is disgustingly overbearing, with no basis in actual fact and it requires your suspense of disbelief to an ABSURD degree.
They're passing off this other message of mere Nihilism, and to a real Nihilist like me, I see through this phony BS.
The whole premise of "what makes us human" is so easy to properly portray that a mentally low-functioning eight year old could do it in their sleep.

The fix is simple. Switch the Androids of YoRHa with the machines (I.E. the machines serve YoRHa and the Androids serve and eventually kill the Aliens), and adjust the story accordingly. Makes FAR MORE sense, less overbearing, and the ending part of the whole final arc makes more sense too. Not only that, but 9S and 2B would also be more imposing of villains than Adam and Eve, who we have a complete disconnect with.

It is so simplistic to make your point better than the writing direction you gave it, that it baffles me how stupid Yoko Taro is. I mean, if you wish to write the story your way, by all means. Just don't pass off this story as something so intellectually and morally deep when WITH EASE I can just Mad Lib and switch out adjectives and nouns to make it a million times more effective.

It is so shallow and so transparent to me, that it amazes me that this game has successfully conned its way to not only have common acceptance by the ignorant masses, but also be considered one of the BEST games of 2017. I kid you not, this is a real thing that people delude themselves to be.

I only covered the entire skeleton of the game. I would prefer not to do play by play honestly, but to be frank there's so many issues with the story, I do not have the time nor character limit to go over it all.

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
