I really didn't enjoy this game as much as I had hoped. They make you backtrack through the same boring lifeless areas over and over and over. And there are several segments of the game that are purposefully frustrating because they're trying to make some weird artistic point. Just watch someone play this on YouTube or read a plot synopsis. The story is good, the rest of the game is garbage.

for most of the time i spent playing nier automata, i was amazed with my eyebrows hitting the ceiling and my jaws dropped to the floor.
    few negative points :
    - low frame rates on PS4, sometimes it's very low it's embarrassing for a game like this
-most dialogues are without voice overs, you just read subtitles while characters stand there "sometimes not even looking at each other while talking"
other than that the game is a masterpiece, the soundtrack is a piece of art on its own.
nier automata has made it much harder for game developers from now on.

I've just finished all the 5 main endings in about 65 hours.

It's just the best story i ever seen in my entire life !

    1/ Play this awesome game
2/ Do NOT stop playing after the first ending
3/ Do NOT stop playing after the second ending

No game is perfect but this is close. Don't quit after the first ending because you have seen nothing. The last chapter of the story is amazing and changes everything.
Normal was a bit too easy and hard was not fun. I wish they could have made the game a bit more challenging without just turning up the enemy damage numbers.

    __Gameplay:

FAtAl ErRor"§%%(/(... THiS CanNOT coNtiNUe..§$"%)=

The story combines comedy and tragedy and I always want to play more and more in order to know about the thrilling mystery behind the alien machines taking over the Earth, humanity living on the moon and the Yorha corporation.

The gameplay is made in PlatinumGames. It’s very funny and addictive and, despite being an action-RPG game, sometimes it feels like a shoot-em up, sometimes a pure hack and slash and some other times a 2.5D platformer.

The soundtrack is gorgeous and is also some of the best I heard recently. There are all kind of tracks, from epic choral pieces to more acoustic songs accompanied of children chants. These tracks suit perfectly all the events and locations in the game. To sum up how good the soundtrack was to me, I can say that whenever I wasn’t playing the game, I was listening to the soundtrack…

The only flaws I found in this game are the graphics, which look a little bit old-fashioned, and some frame rate drops during the game (even playing with a PS4 Pro). It would have been great they included a photo mode.

Yoko Taro made the masterpiece and proved that games can be better than books and movies in storytelling and deliver great messages to a consumer. After 40 hours, I finished a game. And I would do it again. I can't stop thinking about this game for a long time after I beat it. This piece of art has so many gameplay varieties and it surprises you constantly. Technically it is not the best and it has problems but in that case, it does not matter. What does matter is that Platinum Games and Yoko were not scared to release a game like that. A soundtrack is the best and I do not think we will get something better in 2017. Characters are interesting and you care for them, also you wanna know what happened to this world and what will happen. Strange and refreshing game design is giving you new emotions and it works perfectly. Everything is built so organically here. Gameplay is made by Platinum Games so you probably know what to expect from them. They are one of the best in industry. Hack'N'Slash mechanics maybe not as advanced as Bayonetta for example but I did enjoy it.

Guys If you are a hardcore gamer who appreciates games as an art, you must get this game and support games like that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. [Portion of original Full-Length Review]

One of the most intriguing aspects of gameplay at least stylistically stems from the change in perspective that litters some portions of the game. Typically you play in an over-the-shoulder third-person format, yet on occasion the game shifts to on the rails and top down perspectives for intense firefights utilizing your full android arsenal and party. While ultimately even the bullet-hell segments of the game boil down to eliminating your enemies and clearing the area in search of any interesting lore or story progression, I still found combat and the nice pace of breaking things up a suitable way to keep the monotony of most hack and slash titles to a minimum. The combat is solid enough that there honestly doesn’t need to be too much done with it that is flashy or gaudy and the enemy encounters and boss fights are memorable enough and frenetic and entertaining as is.

The few complaints that I would have do touch a bit on what repetition there is actually present within the game and that comes largely as a narrative and strategic thing. Your character will be afforded the opportunity to deck themselves out in the occasional rare bonus here and there, plugging in a special upgrade chip that boosts stats in certain areas and are hard to come by. Ultimately this adds some strategy to the game, however there isn’t much diversity outside of a health or damage boost and so it isn’t as interesting as it could be in terms of use. Another case I would like to make is that Automata falls heavily into the Dragon Age II camp of adventure titles- meaning there is plenty of lore and content there and it isn’t a bad game at all, however you’re likely to retread many of the same or all-too similar areas for the duration of the campaign and throughout your quests. Although encounters will be varied and narrative progression unhindered, it’s a sort of lazy game design flaw that bugs any and everyone.

The world and lore is entirely too intriguing for it to be limited in some of the ways it is- perhaps not literally as it is quite expansive, but in terms of scope and use as a character in and of itself. All things considered, if you played the previous installment then you’ll probably agree that Automata is certainly a leg up on the original in nearly every single way possible. The combat encounters are fun if not always diverse, the lore is handled quite well and manages to promote some intriguing plot lines, and the gameplay mechanics are quite solid and rarely offer any hiccups to halt the fluidity of the game. If you’re looking for an experience that has the ability to be a comprehensive one but doesn’t force you to explore it as deeply as you could, then Nier: Automata is for you.

Concept: Guide your android comrades in the eternal war against the machines. Quite literally, rage against the machine.

Graphics: While you will see ultimately a lot of the same, what is there is rendered quite well and there aren’t too many muddy textures involved.

Sound: The melancholy mood that permeates the soundtrack and the narrative itself lends to the experience overall and is a strong selling point.

Playability: While it has some quirky features and abrupt changes in perspective at times, the gameplay handles excellently and fluidly throughout your adventure.

Entertainment: There are often hidden depths to be found but the main draw lies in the fact that the experience is totally what you make of it and there are many interesting facets to the characters and the world and conflict themselves.

    Replay Value: Moderate.

    Overall Score: 8.5

-Some side-quests can turn into boring Fetch quests
-Game can get some major FPS drops when you destroy multiple robots

    OVERALL:
A masterpiece of a game, easily on the level of Witcher 3 and the last of us. In my opinion, i think Nier is better than the two. If you are looking for a good story with godlike soundtrack, plus some fun gameplay and side quests, then nier is the game for you

The game is not perfect for a 10. At least a 9. But to compensate haters by giving 0 unfairly in order to lower the score, I am giving 10.

Keep playing it and you'll learn the game has deep mechanics, a profound story, great soundtrack, and a surprising amount of replayability. Normally I only play a game until I beat it, but this game I'm well into my second play-through and I'm still interested in what it has to offer. Nier isn't just some cookie cutter action RPG, with a couple upgrades to make it "new". No... There are plenty of unique and original ideas here that will definitely be copied by and influence future games, evolving gaming the same way Kanye evolved music during his early albums. Highly recommended. Expand

Had never heard of the game and didn't even really like the look but I guarantee it's worth your money - it's the most intriguing, beautiful game and Yoko Taro is an incredible writer. I could go for days about how much i love it but you've got to give it a go for yourself.

Elegant game with divine music, great art, very rich gameplay and with a good story and characters that still do not reach the Drakengard 3.

I'm looking forward to a new game from Yoko and Keiichi in cooperation with Platinum.

This game revitalizes narrative-driven gameplay in videogames. Whilst toying with multiple genres, and sub genres, related to hack'n'slash and top down/side scrolling shooters and general bullet hell games. Through changes in camera angles, and various segments from flight units to hacking... this game expands magnificently on a concept the original Nier touched upon.

Besides from it's diverse mechanics and styles of gameplay, the visuals play a vital role. Being absolutely stunning to the point of realism upon closer inspection, especially when it comes to it's character models. Square Enix have this unique ability to bring to life light and water effects upon characters, as seen in FFXV and SO5, as well as make clothing look weighted, and work as physically intend with movement, gravity and added weight with the inclusion of dirt and moisture. Though most of that can only be seen on 2B, it's still a minute detail that exemplifies Platinum Games' efforts with regards to Nier: Automata.

The soundtrack to this title itself is a standalone masterpiece, fitting perfectly with the emotion and narrative of the game and helps shape the atmosphere wonderfully. Always 'kicking' in when you least expect it and with it always being the icing on a very wonderfully crafted cake. So much so it's entirely memorable and itself is another key reason that this game will someday be remembered as a classic.

Now, story wise... this game is unique in the sense as it tells the story of an epic whilst using a variety of narrative styles that slowly unfold the game through the main story. The side quests, as well as hidden items and lore, expand upon the solid foundation to create a more wholesome world and breath life into characters. I found myself towards the end of the game remembering earlier side quests, and noting how they tied into the main themes of the game by the time I reached the ending, realizing how even some of the side quests had minor plot twists. Subliminally spilling the beans early on for you to only find out at the end... and ultimately realize what you've overlooked, and that's the true impact of the story. This always works due to the various playthroughs and narrative points of characters. Especially as there are instances where you (re)play the same part of the game, but in a different area or just from another character's perspective.

Now, for some down points to the game. I found that the world just wasn't big enough. And that a lot of the sidequests were barbarically uninspired and dull, though there were some easily amazing side quests that I won't be forgetting any time soon. That being said, I spent 20hrs+ of my 50 running around like a headless chicken - although a lot of the running around can be "sped up" through certain mechanics later in the game - it doesn't devoid the sense that with majority of the side quests being boring and/or pointless, they were trying to make use of a small map by adding in a lot of fluff. Too much, unfortunately. And I found this game doesn't have the replayability necessary to allow so much fluff, as well such a short map. Granted, there's plenty of content - just on finding items, enemy types, weapons, pods and programmes, etc. But even at the end game there wasn't anything to do except a bunch of menial side quests and 2 secret bosses. The second being overly difficult and unrewarding (no in-game reward, or secret item/weapon, barely any expanse upon the lore). Another issue was the hacking mechanic was used too much, that a small segment of the game utilized the hacking mechanic and was plainly difficult. Mainly because it was seemingly uninspired, as well as the fact I'm objectively bad at bullet hell games, as well as subjectively hating them. And that hacking "breaks" the game, even allowing you to insta-kill the 3rd most difficult enemy in the game, and make light work of the last 2 with ease.

Besides some crashing/stuttering issues on PS4, this game mostly ran perfectly. Only stuttering when trying to load large areas, though being fine with mass amounts of enemies and noise on-screen. Ultimately this game has etched itself on my emotions, scaring my fragile heart so as to never forget it. And overlooking some of it's flaws, as they're not game-breaking (maybe the hacking, let's be real), and that this game really is a modern classic that all should play, and that all should remember.

Expand

However as I grow I stoped doing that, I thought is simply because I was getting old and I just don't get as excited anymore. However Nier broke my thoughts entirely I was so shocked that after playing 34 hours of game play it was just a intro of the game(finally showing intro screen with the title of the game) I was so shocked thinking "Oh I just started? After all that??".

After finishing the game for the first time it is only about is not even 1/4 of the game and it's story and content it gives you. The game truly start to shine after the 3rd play though. This is what makes the game great because it never really gets bored with all the new stories and contents that gives you. Additionally the music is simply beautiful not just 1 or 2 track that was great. it was very single one of them I had so many moments I had to take some moments to just listen the tracks. Finally I want to talk about the narrative of the game and the story. I do not want to mention any spoilers however philosophy behind is vey strong, as you progress the the game(more and more endings) it start to make you wonder if what you are doing is really right? Anyway I just want to say is if you really love game I think you really should try it and play though to the very end (The route E:). I am sure you will not regrat it.

But that's the charm of N:A for me, and probably because of my age and my life experience till today. I can absorb and understand about the message that was hidden behind the stage play of this game. The combat system is nice and difficulty level easily adjustable with chips, and far from boring buttons smasher like Dynasty series. Really really satisfied with it :) Expand

I may not know what makes a hack and slash, or a jrpg game good but imo NieR Automata is VERY good. Nier Automata makes an attempt at putting almost every genre of game into 1 title. Bullet hell, side scrolling platformer, top down shooter, etc. To my surprise all of those things are done rather well. I can't say that the story is great yet because I feel like I need to play it a couple more times to really get it, there is still much I'm not sure about but what is important here is that I am COMPLETELY willing to play through a couple more times. That says something. With all the titles released recently my backlog seems to get bigger and bigger everyday but I am content with playing Nier exclusively for the time being. Another big plus for this game is the soundtrack. The music that plays with each scenario is sublime, and should be the industry standard for what kind of role music should play in video games. One gripe I have being new to this style of game is being overwhelmed by certain mechanics that have to do with leveling up your character. You are playing as an Android named 2B and your defense, and attack protocols are dependent on the "chips" (as in computer chips, or programs) you have and equip. I still don't think I could explain it but if you are new to this type of game I highly suggest you watch some youtube videos on leveling up 2B. Anyway, the game is great and worth the price. There is a lot of game here, probably around 35 hours I think. And although the open world isn't full of intricate details, it is a blast to explore. Expand

An interesting fact of Metacritic (or IMDB etc) is that there is no game or film ever made that does not get 0/10 from some and 10/10 from others. In other words, excepting fan-boys and trolls, we're all different and look for different things. But one can at least try and be objective (e.g. one may not 'like' Queen's music, but one cannot deny its technical accomplishment etc).

In other words, excepting fan-boys and trolls, we're all different and look for different things. But one can at least try and be objective (e.g. one may not 'like' Queen's music, but one cannot deny its technical accomplishment etc).

Nier A has decent graphics (not mind-blowing, but I imagine its core engine has been in development for some 'pre-pro' time) and truly excellent music (the most under-rated and least-commented-upon aspect of games, despite its importance). The almost postmodern mix of genres and 'fourth-wall-breaking' elements tells you this is a game that can operate on several levels (i delighted in the shoot-em-up and 2D scrolling sections, but that may be my age - and nostalgia).

Underpinning the game is an astonishingly complex and morally-questioning story (I don't understand those who say it is bland or by the numbers - it poses some very challenging philosophical questions, but I appreciate these may be missed by those who assume it is a 'kill the robot enemies' game). Much will depend on how you react to the climax of the first level 'proper' (no spoilers, but that will tell you whether this is your kind of game or whether you are better off with COD). The muitiple play-throughs are a clever twist on 'alternative perspective' or 'alternative storyline' films and books. It takes until the third (or more) play-through to really get this game (30-40 hours or so in, and it hits you).

As for 'hack and slash': yes, on easy (or maybe even normal, if you are a seasoned gamer) it can be pretty simplistic; but, on hard, you have to change your approach, and learn the complex combat mechanics and manage the RPG elements (which are not necessarily explained). I liken this to Witcher 3: play on easy, and you don't really have to worry about anything; play on the harder levels, and potions and preparations become paramount; or Uncharted: play on easy, and walk though every fight; play on hard or crushing, and battles become tactical stand-offs. But this is why games have difficulty levels!

I do agree in respect of the design-choice error in terms of the prologue (no save points for 30-40 minutes) and the invisible walls - which is why I arrived at 9/10.

But over 1 million copies sold (in the midst of a mass of triple-A releases), a critic score of almost 9, and a user score of almost 9, probably tells you something.

It might not be for you, but that does not necessarily justify 0/10 or 1/10 for a game that clearly has considerable technical merit and is trying to be more than your standard game.

I'd say try it (and, most importantly, give it time - in pop music terms it's 'a grower')

It's a really great game and worth a look at but is it worth $60, I'd say more $55 or $50 if you've never played the old Nier game.

Graphics, it's not bad but definitely not new gen graphics. it's not broken like some games that have been coming out lately. It looks like a late ps3 type game. Sound, I don't mind the music but it's not like Final Fantasy were I can sit around

Graphics, it's not bad but definitely not new gen graphics. it's not broken like some games that have been coming out lately. It looks like a late ps3 type game.

Sound, I don't mind the music but it's not like Final Fantasy were I can sit around listening to just the music. I will say I do like the vocal song(I don't know the name) the 1 that plays in the demo.

Story, it's long winded and has 4 ending so you have to play through the game at least 3 times, once you beat it the 3rd time it unlocks chapter select so the 4th ending is just do the fight.
So the story is humanity has gone extinct androids are the new people fighting for humanity who they believe is still alive and they are fighting machines who came on alien ships, so basically its androids vs. robots.
You start as 2B who like a soldier android who are programed to fight robots her story line is pretty straight forward kill robots save humanity all the way up until the ending which then their is a twist, and it's not 'she turns on her people' she does have another purpose to exist.
After that play through you start over but now you play as 9S who is like a scout. he observes the enemy and hacks machines. In this play through you fight like 2B and hack items, but the ending in this 1 changes.
Now you're on the 3rd play through it's a split play, you play as 9S and A2. A2 is a rogue android you find in your earlier play through 's. The story on this play through is it's a little after the 2nd play though and 9S just wants to kill all machines while A2 starts that way but then changes once she finds a village of nice machines she changes her mind and just wants to kill some.

Gameplay, it's a hack n slash, leveling, bullet hell, 3rd person, side/overhead scroller. and shooter.
The main gameplay is shooter and hack n slash, it does have a hacking mini game throughout it but that's really only when your 9S.
leveling makes you a little stronger but what really boosts your ability to kill is plug-in chips.

Overall, its defiantly worth a play through

It is definitely right that passing the game the first time barely scratches the surface. you really only get about 20% of the story. Replaying the game isn't just replaying it all over again. It really feels like you're going onto the next chapter in a book. j

The music in this game is absolutely phenomenal. They match the mood and scenes in the game and are catchy. One of the tracks in particular was so catchy I had to download it on my phone to listen to it. The soundtrack alone is enough to get this game and luckily it complements the action, story and characters.

The characters in this game are also likeable. Some took a while for me to warm up to but you do eventually become invested in their motives and story. This game I realised in the end talks about what it means to be human - the emotions we feel, what the meaning of our existence is and how the machines and androids in this game may not be as different to humans as they seem.

This is a must buy. I thought Breath of the Wild was my game of the year and it may still be, but now that Nier Automata has come, I'm still deciding which one takes that spot now.

Obra maestra, had a blast incredible plot, delightful fighting mechanics, cool weapon leveling, really interesting chip customization to enhance your abilities, amazing OST, nice graphics. The game's a freakin masterpiece…though a flawed masterpiece. It is definitely a unique experience, the likes of which I have not come across often. Getting into what's great (and stuff which is not so great):

    Pros:
*Story: An incredibly twisted, thought-provoking and moving story, which really starts to unravel itself in the most unique way through subsequent play-throughs. As it's a Yoko Taro game, expect a lot of dark moments.
*Combat: Fast-paced and super satisfying, plus it changes up with each character you play.
*Boss fights: This game has some of the most creative and crazy boss battles you will experience!
*Switches genres: Go from a third-person to side-scroller to bullet hell to mini-arcades to other game genres I didn't even know existed. But it is all seamless and addictive!
*Soundtrack: The music of the game is phenominal and really adds to the narrative and the big story moments.
*History and lore: At first, it might seem there isn't a lot to the open world, but as you progress and unravel the hystory and mysteries of this dystopian world, there are a great many surprises and easter eggs to discover.
*Uses the medium to its fullest: Nier Automata is a wholy unique experience, because it likely wouldn't work in any other medium other than as a video-game…that also a Yoko Taro game.

However, just as everything, the game isn't perfect and has few technical faults.
    Cons:
*The difficulty is broken: even while playing on normal, the game is at times incredibly easy and at times excruciatingly difficult.
*Jaggies: the graphics are incredibly jagged and takes some getting used to.
*Open world is not so open: there are a number of invisble walls (in places there shouldn't be) and gets to be a bit frustrating to navigate at times.
*Ranged attacks: the combat mechanics of the game is awesome, however, you can find yourself relying too much on the range attack function in situations, that it becomes more of a crutch that takes away from the awesome melee combat, especially in difficult boss battles.

All in all, Nier Automata is an incredibly unique and riveting experience, the likes of which will stay with you long after you have finished it.

This game is certainly not for everyone. I bought it because of all the great reviews and scores and didn't enjoy a moment playing it. The music is annoying, the camera and controls are a pain in the a**, the checkpoint/autosave feature is a joke. The story is the usual Japanese futuristic nonsense some will love, some will not, but no-one will understand a thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Masterpiece of game design? Really, did I bang my head and wake up in 1989? This game offers nothing new, ZERO INNOVATION, but yet it is being heralded as a Masterpiece in every aspect and detail it offers gamers in 2017.

The story telling is a yawn fest, the earth has been invaded by alien robots, but we managed in the middle of mass genocide to build a base on the moon and then build a space station that for some unknown reason the aliens just couldn't be bothered blowing up. There's a lesson in great story telling, not. This is a weak premise for a game, and the story doesn't get any better, it is an antiquated mess of ideas mixed in with some very typical Japanese inspired cliche characters that are lifeless.

I haven't come across a single element that this game offers that is new, or even an element that has been copied and improved on from another game. If this game is truly a masterpiece then the core element of the game, the combat, must be absolutely brilliant. Well, the combat in this game is lame, easy and requires no skill, none. I spent the entire game running around in circles, and holding the range attack button on my drone for every combat. Game of the year contender, give me a break.

Every once in awhile a game comes along that has the potential to either significantly change you or gaming as an industry, or both. Nier: Automata is both.

Even more interesting is the brilliance of this game revealed in the contrast of the burdened by politics and poor development games like Mass Effect Andromeda. In that contrast, Nier shines even more brightly. I'd give it an 11 if I could.

Story - The story is interesting, astoundished and leads the player into so much questions, but that's how Squenix (Square Enix) start their stories. Having an all female (And one male to be seen) Android operative squad, fight against aliens (In which the player hears about but never gets to see them) who created machines to wipe out all of humanity on Earth seems to be something out of an anime show considering there are a total of 26 endings to beat the whole game (Only 20/26 I have unlocked so far). In which most of these ending end up in a dark, or a joke twist and would lead to a sequel.
Gameplay - The open world is very well put. But the level up design is only for show as it only powers up your defense and attack power, no other customization besides weapons. 2b's fighting style is that of Dante from Devil May Cry and her... Design is from Bayonetta. You got to hand it to Japan for making the best female design. The machines are what got me interested in, as they develop emotions and characters of their own as the player progresses deeper into the game. The music sometimes repeats the same soundtrack whenever the player jumps into any battle including bosses, but the music is great overall. The gameplay changes the camera angle depending on the platform the player is in, which makes this game feel like a Devil May Cry moment.
Mechanic - Though the combo input list is short, the animation it brings in is Platinum's signature move. The player can also freely switch between weapon and hand to hand combat during combos to make the game more interesting. Pods come in handy when keeping your enemies at distance and help the player from taking fall damage. Having 9s to help the player out and changing his fighting tactics remind me of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 as the player can change 9s fighting type from agressive, defensive, support or protect. The dodging mechanic is the players best savior when constantly tapping the R2 button to dodge a frenzy attack and executing with an uppercut and perform some aerial combos (Won't work on small bosses though).
Characters - 2b and 9s already have a weird relationship after their first mission, especially 2b, if anything happens to 9s she goes to a panic/anger attack on the machines if anyone hurts 9s. But makes sense for 9s being the only male to be seen in the YOHRA squad, but seeing 9s trying to communicate 2b with humor and having 9s being the damsel in distress is humorous. What's wierd to me is that all characters consider Pascal a male even though her voice is female, could it be that some machines can have a homosexuality chip in their circuit showing that the world and machines can appear in many and different ways, or was this a dialogue mistake from Squenix?
Conclusion - Story is interesting, Gameplay is astounding, mechanics are fun to input and the characters have flaws in their appearance and actions. Niet: Automata gives an interesting route to the game of it's story, gameplay and it's open world. With so many endings I believe that is the reason why DLC is not shown or required for this game.
    Final Verdict:
9/10 - The game is so much fun and having the gameplay change time to time after unlocking each ending gives new way of gaming.
Buy, Not Buy or Rent - Buy. This game is well suited for Devil May Cry/Bayonetta fans out there including some New comers who have little to no experience of action role-playing games.
Video version will be up soon.

Similarly, the story is full of twists, told through multiple successive playthroughs that change substantial elements (including the characters you play) with every new start of your save, creating a fantastic twist on more traditional New Game Plus modes (since you blissfully get to keep all of your progress each time). The cast of characters, from the main ones down through support characters, are interesting and memorable, and even now there are so many moments between them that keep replaying in my mind. The game's somber but beautifully stylized environments are accompanied throughout by a beautiful musical score, composed with the sort of excellence in craft that the pieces themselves evoke a sense of place or enhance a mood. On top of that, the game is still buggy and the framerate drop is ridiculous and distracting. A beautiful, fun, very nice game. A very sexy game, I'd say (and not just because of the protagonist). The whole thing feels sexy and monochromatic and post-apocalyptic in the best way possible. But the game is far, far from perfect.

I stand fully behind that statement even though I have only beaten the game twice, which does not contain all of the game's content by any means. I have roughly 50 hours of game time so far. If anything I have said or will say seems confusing, it's because I'm intentionally being vague to avoid spoilers. This game is very complex and unique.

On a surface level, each type of gameplay the game offers is a bit basic, but handles incredibly well. The mechanic of switching between types of gameplay keeps things interesting, but it isn't very challenging. There are different difficulties, but to me hard does not equate to challenging. Hard would mean I take more damage or enemies are tougher, etc., which the game has, but isn't fun. Challenging would mean that the gameplay holds depth and requires you to develop skill or carefully think. I have only once ran into any bug while playing, and unfortunately my game crashed from it. The graphics are beautiful and I haven't noticed any significant frame rate drops.

However, despite these complaints, the game really shines if you are academically educated. I'm only in college and I'm sure a great deal of references go above my head, but the deep commentary of the references I catch have multiplied my enjoyment of the game tenfold. Specifically, I would say that the more you know of literary and philosophical references, the more you will enjoy this game.

    Pros -
    - Contains the excellent combat expected from Platinum Games combined with the spot-on humour and craziness expected from a Yoko Taro title.
    - Emotional story with multiple major endings.
    - One of the best soundtracks found in any game.
    - The frequent changes in genre and style of gameplay helped keep things fresh.
    - Comprehensive upgrade system that allows for very different builds.
    - 2B.

    Cons -
    - I wasn't a fan of 9S' gameplay. While, save for a particularly frustrating segment near the end, I enjoyed the hacking, I felt that the hacking in regular combat disrupted the flow and slowed things down too much. This may be a personal preference however.
    - The game has its fair share of boring, dragged out, or sometimes just outright annoying segments. Luckily these are infrequent and are outweighed by the rest of the game.
    - The open world contains a lot of invisible walls and needlessly cordoned off areas that seem to negatively impact exploration.

    Overall Score - 8.4/10

Graphics: 8 Technically the graphics are ps3 but the artwork is amazing and builds excellent atmosphere.Artwork>graphics so 8/10 here

Sound: 9 The soundtrack is truly memorable, one of the best i have heard in years in a videogame and it really compliments the mysterious setting of the game. The fx sound of the game is good, could be worse could be better. Not every dialog is voice acted though. It gest a 9 mostly for the amazing soundtrack

Gameplay: 7 Serious balancing issues for the difficulty levels.Very hard=one hit killed. That makes the different enemies irrelevant. Weather u get him by the smallest enemy or from the largest robot it's the same and it kills any purpose of having different enemies and different levels of enemies. In normal u have to try hard to get killed.the camera is bad in this game. You don't have lock on on hard and very hard and i had to move the camera far away from me because u constantly get attacked my mobs and u have to be aware of your surroundings 360 degrees. That creates another problem and that is that u can't really see the animations of the opponents when the are ready to strike. This and the fact that u always get attacked by mobs makes the combat more like hit,hit evade and repeat repetitively without really reacting to whats happening on the battle.Combat can be satisfying but it has these serious problems that truly hold it back from being great and deep.

In conclusion i give it a 7/10 it is a game with fresh ideas, excellent setting and atmosphere, engaging story and there is some fun to be had by the combat but at the same time it is severely flawed in the battle department and the difficulty imbalance.I find it quite good but certainly overestimated and judging by the scores it got and from the fact that it is developed by a company that i absolutely love, i must say i am a little bit disappointed.

The game seemed to end abruptly, without answering any of the questions I had regarding the plot and the various characters you encounter throughout it. The story seemed very cliché, and my overall impression wasn't particularly good. Although, the music was pretty good, the game had several minor annoyances, like the, at times gimmicky gameplay, stuttering frame rates and a storyline that seemed quite half-assed at the time. I figured the game had been hyped up by fans of the Drakengard series and the original Nier game, none of which I've played myself.

How wrong I was. The overwhelmingly positive reviews I'd read, convinced me to give the game another chance and complete the "A,B,C and D routes", AKA the different endings or play-throughs of the game. And that's when I finally realized how fantastically unique the story really is. I can't believe I initially wrote it off as cliché and half-assed. Despite it's many flaws and shortcomings, Nier: Automata is easily one of the most original games I've ever played, and it's also one of the best games I've played in recent time. It's just a shame that the game forces you to play through it twice, under almost identical circumstances, before it offers the content that drastically changes the overall quality of the game, and more than compensates for the poor impression (most people) will be left with after completing the initial play-through. It's also worth mentioning that the battle system allows for quite a lot more intuitive and advanced moves than simple button-mashing, but the majority of consumers will probably button-mash anyway. Said techniques require a lot of timing and coordination, and there aren't any in-game tutorials for advanced techniques, after all - which is strange.

After playing Nioh, where you need a lot of skill to dodge and managing your stamina, here you need just to spam the infinite ammo of you Pod, which does a fair amount of damage, and stay safe at mid/long range. Enemies are so slow, that is almost hard not to avoid their hits, you should be really a troll in order to die there.
Another very important fact, I have ended the game after only 9 hours of game play!! And it says: you can keep playing the sub-quests, but this is obviously not great, the main history should have been much more polished and complex than it is.

Ingenious use of game mechanics that are used to tell a remarkable tale.
The game deals with dark and heavy themes but never feels morose or weighed down thanks to the kinetic fast paced combat and the game's wonderfully dark sense of humour.
Special mention has to go to the music. It's one of the best video game soundtracks ever conceived.

Simply put, this game is a masterpiece.

This is a pretty good game. 3 hours in and I'm sort of confused (note the confused tone in this review) but this is a pretty good game. Damn good, actually. Very confusing, but damn good.

It has some of the best music I've ever heard in a game.

i liked the combat style from demo, but realizing you play maybe 30% max with 2B got me angry, 9S behaves like little kid i was extremly annoyed playing with him

Welcome to the world of Nier, depressing, altruistic, monochromatic and most of all engrossing.

I was unfamiliar to Yoko Taro's Drakenguard series as well as Nier, but after playing this game I was enticed by the story. The writer made a fair point regarding a connected universe separated by vast amounts of time which allows new players to join into the story without knowledge of the previous games.

The color palette used in the game fits in thematically with a post-humanity earth, with Yoko Taro's distaste for humanity bleeding through the cracks, placing you in a proxy war against alien machines as an Automaton with human emotions in order to regain footing for humanity on Earth.

The alien machines have begun to display strange patterns and begin to mimic humanity and places you, the player, in the eyes of 3 different Automata with different ideals, and the ever changing prerogative of the machines made by humans evolves with the different playthroughs.

The sound is captivating, a second to none soundtrack with sound queues that warn you in combat of incoming enemy attacks in order for you to execute that perfect dodge to continue your robopocalypse.

The combat was refreshing, as you are placed in different perspectives at times, and the combat flows really well from 3D to 2D, showing the technical expertise of the programmers. A different and fresh approach to the hack and slash genre.

Overall the game is a must own title on the Playstation 4, and PC.

    Gameplay: 10/10

Overall worth the full price. There are 26 endings so you can replay this game a lot.
Recommend buying this game as soon as you can, no need to wait for sales.

I don't know what should i tell you about this game. So imma go short.
    MASTERPIECE:
    - It's a perfect combo of genres.
    - GREAT music
    - one of the best stories/complicated stories/with a message
Yoko Taro blew my mind. He knows what I want and I hope he will have more budget for his next project, so I can die in peace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game had me wanting more, an not in the bad "there should have been more" way. The story had an ending that was an ending and I wanted more afterwards, but Yoko Taro can do that every time. This is the GOTY for me for sure because of all the things it did right.
The story is amazing and emotional.
The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard, better, even, than the original Nier.
The combat by Platinum Games is solid and (minor spoilers)
When you play as 9S the mini game of hacking is interesting.
There is more good but there were a couple of things that I didn't like as well.
The hacking gets a little repetitive by the end but that is forgivable.
Some lore of the story is in side quests. That is not a problem for me but for people who do not 100% the game it may be. Overall this is one of the easiest 10/10s I've given.

NieR: Automata is, probably the best game I've ever played so far. I have not played the first NieR (and I regret it now the most) but I can guarantee this game is a masterpiece in every possible way.

    Spoiler free.

The story is incredible good and deep, even more if you care to read lores and data (Dark Souls style). Everything is well written and even there are small holes in the main story, the characters and their growth are there to compensate it in the perfect way. To add more depth, when you finish the game (route C) you can understand some small hints given at very specific points of the game that seemed irrelevant, and you start to realise how well developed the story is.
Endings of every route are incredible. Specially the True Ending. One of the best moments I've lived in my gaming life.

Side quests, even though they were a pain sometimes and very repetitive, helped me to understand and valorate more the doomed world the Earth was. In addition, they put more value in the main characters as you could see how 2B, 9S or A2 reacted to some of them.

The design of both the characters and the world is just beautiful. Altough the game does not have the best graphics ever (not that it needed), they have so much quality and it's a fact the developers put much effort in it.

Gameplay is fantastic. It's fluid, fast, deep, easy to learn and hard to master. And the best about this is how Platinum Games implemented it with the story. I'm having flashbacks from the last part of the game when they start to switch between characters and how well done it is.

OST is... the mOST (jk) beautiful soundtrack I've ever seen (and listened) in ages. I thought it was not possible to see an OST better than the BloodBorne Old Hunters, guess I was mistaken. There are tracks for every single situation, and they are perfect for every single moment. Voice actors are superb, I've played the game with japanese voices and they are so freakin' good!.

To [E]nd with my review, I have to say thanks to Yoko Taro, Square Enix and Platinum Games, for bringing this gem to life. I will keep these memories in my heart and pray for a new sequel in some years.

    Thank you for reading!

You will go back to old areas but luckily when you do there are decently drastic differences, some enemies get a little repetitive but right as you think you've seen everything there is something else to discover with unique mini-bosses to hidden areas. Amazing game with some small but persistent issues but defiantly worth the money and time. I would personally say for new players to try to hold criticism until the third part credits, I almost left after the first credits but I was happily mistaken with two other almost entirely different parts. This game is a must-have for people tired of mindless games that have come out recently. Expand

It's an achievement... especially in the genre that it is in, which is effective and open-world, mission based hack-and-slash. It adds to its likeability by also throwing in some dual-stick shooter action, RPG elements and collectibles and great artistic quality in its storytelling. The game does what a lot of games would be scared to do, and it works to great effect.

Again, played all three of Sony's Q1 amazing exclusives and loves them all. I like this one the best by a slim margin, but for anyone that doesn't care about comparisons:

Play Nier Automata because it feels like a 2017 game. If you have a siiiiick PC that can make the graphics better, buy it on that "console," but yeah, enjoy the ride. It's like watching a fun/good/poignant anime and playing Devil May Cry at the same time, except ROBOTS/ANDROIDS.

    Hurray?

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
