The soundtrack is one of the best ones I ever experienced in a game or movie. It is the highest point of this game that surely is a master piece.

Soundtrack is amazing. Visual style is perfect. The story is deep and sad yet giving you a hope.
But all those words are pretty useless when describing this game separately because only in union they meld into this Masterpiece from true master of this century, named NieR: Automata.

Thank you, Yoko Taro, for giving me an opportunity to touch this piece of art.

The only problem I can find with this game, has to do with its performance. It runs pretty bad on underpowered machines, and can struggle on high end computers as well. It may not include the most sensical story or compelling characters, but its frenzied combat -- coupled with beautiful visuals and a stunning soundtrack – make it too much fun to pass up.

Yoko Taro is a name I will forever remember, for delivering a true masterpiece, my game of the generation, of any generation thus far that I've experienced. Nier transcends gaming, elevating it to an undescribable experience.

I'm trying to craft a review in the traditional sense to be objective and rational, to state the pros and cons like I normally do, but it's beyond that. I'm listening to Keiichi Okabe's amazing music (Weight of the World) while typing this and I cannot tell you, dear reader, the number of times his music brings me goosebumps, tugging at my heartstrings, full of melancholy, hope and so hauntingly beautiful.

I wish everyone in the world could play this. This has to be experienced, not watched. It engaged multiple sensory experiences in me, I can't even begin to explain it. I didn't even realize I played 50hrs of it at the end. I just deleted it to make space for Red Dead Redemption 2 but immediately regretted it. Never has a game left a gaping hole in my heart after finishing it. I'm playing Prey as my next game in my playlist but I cannot bear to go on. My mind, my heart, is still in Nier's desolate and heartbreaking world. I need time to recover.

I am regretting so much not buying this Day One, and not getting the Collector's Edition. I'll be buying anything with Nier Automata on it; books, art, vinyl, music, everything. The newly released book by Yoko Taro in English will be in my mail today and man I cannot wait to experience Nier's story again.

I implore you, play Nier Automata. Experience it for yourself. You'll be in tears at the end, the true end.

I just feel like this is a game made specifically for 13 year olds. From the "shallow-philosophical" story of 2 emo robots, from the fact that you see 2B's panties all the time, to the boring hack and slash and loot. It all made for a very bland experience, in a world and environment and concept with the potential for much more.

Really, I can't get it how this is only getting 9s and 10s. Seems like people no longer play a game to have a challenge, to actually have some dopamine going in their brains, no, they just want an overpriced interactive Hollywood movie.

For the most part, music is not that important to me and as long as I can zone the music out then I’m fine with it. This was so bad that I couldn’t do that and I would say that five minutes into the game, I had to mute the game music.

The combat itself, I didn’t like the way that the cameras kept shifting from an overhead view to a 2-D plane to 3-D plane. I know its a way to shake up the combat but the only plane that I enjoyed was the 3-D plane because that felt like the most natural in this type of game.

Finally, what turned me off from this game was, I was on a bridge and I had to fight two Compound Miter Saw things and it wasn’t fun trying to dodge those and I ended getting stuck in between both of them and I died. Which this is a fun game where if you die within the first half hour of the game then you have to start the whole thing over again because that’s how I like to play video games. Redoing things that weren’t that much fun to begin with.

I have sent this game back to Gamefly and I will not be playing this game again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is 100% "okay" and that's really the best thing I can say.

After playing for 30 hours, doing all the quests i cared to do (about 83%), doing the main 5 endings (ABCDE) and enjoying and hating aspects of it, i just thought that "this game was ok". Really, it was just okay, especially when there are so many flaws - both gameplay and story-wise - that just don't really make it that great.

For instance the combat is fun! Repetitive but fun, really REALLY repetitive but very fun, and I always loved using 2B for the fighting, which was smooth and easy to use but too bad the controls are utter crap and the lock on is awful.

You also get to control 9S in the second playthrough, who is a scanner (aka hacker) and can kill most enemies with ease making the combat easier against tough enemies. Too bad that in exchange for that 9S fights like ASS, having the worst and most unreliable combat ever that I had to rely on the pod's gun to do damage. And the hacking is also repetitive too - what a surprise!

The story is well done too: I had legitimate times where it surprised me and it had some very good scenes, especially the last endings.
I won't lie when the game tried its best it did impress me with some deep scenes and sad ones too but at the same time it's ruined by a LOT of scenes that try SO HARD to make you feel sad it was hilarious.
I wish I was kidding but that's actually how the game tries to make you feel sad, with forced scenes of death and dialogues ending with ellipses all the time.
The only thing missing was a sign saying "Feel something", which I did: an urge to laugh.

Some characters are well done too - I particularly loved Pascal and 9S (the start) - and I was legitimately curious to see how the game would end, but unfortunately most of the rest are either boring (2B) not well developed (Devola/Popola, Anemone, A2)) or just done there for that brief moment of sadness I was talking about (the random chats with your operator, quest related characters, etc).

And the story itself...it's really not unique: it's basically a story of how androids and machine try to emulate humans and how they learn the meaning of existing. I don't dislike that though because it's HOW you tell a story that matters, but here's my problem with it:

You can switch anyone with the binomial Android/Machine with anything and not much would change - besides the obvious stuff - and honestly there's not even much of that: the androids act like humans, the machines act like humans, everyone acts like humans...so why was it necessary to turn them into machines? It would've been more interesting if they were SLOWLY turning into humans, discovering feelings, having sadness, ANYTHING but they already know that stuff! They even say "Feelings are prohibited" because they KNOW feelings are a pain to deal with - which is true...WHICH IS WHY IT MAKES NO SENSE WHY ROBOTS WOULD HAVE FEELINGS, IT ONLY HINDERS THEIR ACTIVITY, AND IT EVEN SHOWS LATER IN A QUEST WITH PASCAL, YOU DUMB MORONS!
There is a reason why the goddamn terminator had no feelings: if he did he would be freaking out whenever he terminated someone!
In other words, this plot makes no sense and whereas they could've made some badass robots that start to learn what it means to have feelings, to slowly learn what it actually means to be human, including its weaknesses, but by giving them feelings right away they don't become more relatable: they just become annoying ****
I've met real women with bigger balls than 2B and 9S! I'm not exaggerating!

So...do I recommend it? Yeah sure: it's an okay game with good combat, a pretty decent story (which is more than can I say about Square Enix nowadays) and it has a good amount of pros and cons that beat each other out, making the experience equally balanced.

I guess what makes the game better is the music which is good (not a fan myself) and the voice acting is QUITE amazing, probably one of the best of latest times and helps following the plot better even during its hiccups.

But best game ever? not even close, at least for me, a spot taken for Berseria who not only made me sad for actual good reasons, it also had bits and pieces of existence too that were better explained and not too pretentious either.

Overall I can recommend, get it on a discount if you're curious and enjoy/hate it.
I did my part and I also got my saves deleted for others' sake because even if I didn't enjoy it, others might. That's the great thing about opinions.

I simply don't understand what's so special about it and frankly I still prefer the original Nier way more than this.

It seems that the developers really wanted to be original here and whilst they have succeeded, they may have hindered the game in some ways. My biggest gripe is with having to travel from place to place. In my first few hours of the game there was no quick way of doing this and it quickly became cumbersome and monotonous to complete quests.

This leads me to another frustrating factor, in that the quests and general narratives do not flow very well; even in the early periods of the game I was left wondering where to go next or how to progress the story, making me feel like I was wasting time. Having to resort to online guides and videos makes the game feel more like a DIY project rather than fun or a pleasure.

Would I recommend this game? At a decent price, yes, but bear in mind the issues delineated above. The high review scores this game has gotten has me very confused indeed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I find its lack of self-awareness and its lack of factual backup to the story, quite reprehensible. There's so much I can rant and rave about, down to finite details.

NieR: Automata is made by Square Enix and Platinum Games.
It features a multitude of gameplay mechanics, and those who love nostalgia may initially get their kicks and such.
Normally I'd say "Until they grow tired of it and realize how worthless and bland it is" but it is quite clear that people are so delusional that they are no longer qualified to judge what a good game is.

    Where to start?
    Let's break down this story.
So, starting with the story setting, and we already have problems.
Basically, aliens arrived on Earth and invaded.
"In the year 11945 during the 14th Machine War (some time after the 4th ending of the original NieR), Earth has suddenly been invaded by extraterrestrial life forms, armed with weapons known as “bio-machines.”

Facing imminent destruction, mankind had no choice but to flee the Earth and take refuge on the moon. In an attempt to reclaim their planet, humanity formed a resistance army of android soldiers.

To break through this deadlock and reclaim their homeworld, humanity sends the “YoRHa” – an infantry unit of state-of-the-art androids – into battle.

An arduous battle between androids and bio-machines unfolds on an uninhabited, barren planet. And who knows what forgotten truths are revealed in war…"

Two things. A)This gets a literal retcon closer to the end of the game. B)Biomachines are physically and universally impossible. None of the materials known to the entire universe allow metal based alloys to allow biological life. Constantly, you are FORCED to watch as BS goes down.
Stuff like machines creating humanoid machines (which is literally just androids, of which does not need the overt attempt at a moral and philosophical gray zone) is physically, chemically, biologically IMPOSSIBLE.
Here's the thing about this game ladies and gentlemen. This entire game is a pseudophilosophical ATTEMPT at commentary over what makes someone or something "human". Both sides show this shallow attempt as well. Pascal reading Nietzsche, Androids having emotions and desires, biomachines making humanoids, said humanoids reading religious and historical diatribe to further solidify of how 3Deep5Me this game is.
The aliens who invaded? Already dead. The killers? Adam and Eve. I kid you not, those are the names of the two machines. If you cringed in disgust or annoyance, I can't blame you. It is so transparent about how cool and edgy and meaningful they wish to be.
It is disgustingly overbearing, with no basis in actual fact and it requires your suspense of disbelief to an ABSURD degree.
They're passing off this other message of mere Nihilism, and to a real Nihilist like me, I see through this phony BS.
The whole premise of "what makes us human" is so easy to properly portray that a mentally low-functioning eight year old could do it in their sleep.

The fix is simple. Switch the Androids of YoRHa with the machines (I.E. the machines serve YoRHa and the Androids serve and eventually kill the Aliens), and adjust the story accordingly. Makes FAR MORE sense, less overbearing, and the ending part of the whole final arc makes more sense too. Not only that, but 9S and 2B would also be more imposing of villains than Adam and Eve, who we have a complete disconnect with.

It is so simplistic to make your point better than the writing direction you gave it, that it baffles me how stupid Yoko Taro is. I mean, if you wish to write the story your way, by all means. Just don't pass off this story as something so intellectually and morally deep when WITH EASE I can just Mad Lib and switch out adjectives and nouns to make it a million times more effective.

It is so shallow and so transparent to me, that it amazes me that this game has successfully conned its way to not only have common acceptance by the ignorant masses, but also be considered one of the BEST games of 2017. I kid you not, this is a real thing that people delude themselves to be.

I only covered the entire skeleton of the game. I would prefer not to do play by play honestly, but to be frank there's so many issues with the story, I do not have the time nor character limit to go over it all.

I've now played for +20 hours, on my second playthrough, and can't think of a single part of the game where i was enjoying myself.

space shooter + uninspired fetch questing in a ps3 level rpg was just boring.

Combat generally works well and has a depth to it if you are willing to work at it, but 90% of enemies can be killed just by holding the shoot button and running around so there is little incentive to.

Music is nice though... which i guess is a thing

Geez, I don't understand people going **** over this game. The story and characters were average at best. The gameplay was ok, but very repetitive. I enjoyed the characters and story of the 1st Nier so much better. This one left me cold.

Note: I finished first ending then tried playing second one half way then felt too bored to continue, people who praise the game usually say that you have to play at least 3 endings, so I don't know, maybe it get better, but I have no motivation anymore.

    Pros
    - Charming unique character models (2B) - you can see her pantie while playing.
    - Unique camera style - the camera keeps switching between 3D and 2D, and bird view. allow various style of gameplays
    - Good unique BGMs

    Cons
    - Very Outdated graphic
    - Empty & Small World
    - Repetitive looking enemies
    - Shallow combat mechanic - Combat in this game is various but everything is shallow. You can melee or range, dodge .... etc. Nothing serious since you can drink potion anytime with no animation, so as long as you have plenty health potions, you should not die unless due to carelessness. Moreover, dodging is too powerful, you can spam dodging button endlessly and nothing will hit you due to very long i-frame. I would say Nier is kind of jack of all trade, master of none. It gets repetitive real fast.
    - Hard difficulty is not fair - Devs just raise dmg to the point that normal enemies can kill you in 1-2 shots, it is just artificial challenge.
    - Boring Side quests
    - The game is very short 10-13 hrs

Story is subjective one. It is very creative world, about the fight between android and machine, but personally I feel like the story of Nier lacks of backbone. It feels like anything can happen in this world without any reason. I do not care that much about relationship between characters but the devs emphasize this too much. It was disappointed for me.

In the end, score 6/10 is the best I can give for this kind of quality and quantity. For those who never play this game before, there is a free demo, but warning, that demo stage is the best of combat stage they could offer. If you expect something better, you may get disappointed.

I do like the sort of games Nier tries to be but in all honesty the game never delivers the experience everyone here trying so hard to convince you about. The story is so so. The menu, map and even the annoying item pick up where you accidentally talk to your partner got me quite mad at first. Ok i got used to it at the end but for a game people give 9 or 10 that is just not acceptable.
And even if i only played it 1 time the game is not that appealing enough for me to continue. Many games like dark soul or even Horizon or Witcher are so amazing that i can keep playing them but not this game. Its just boring. Enemies are pretty much all alike. Stories are just so so.
Its a ok game but no where near a 9 or 10 grade games. Also its way way to short even if they say you need to play it multiple time. The first run took me 3 days or so. That is no where near a 9 grade game!
Personally i dont like huge games that takes months to finish but even for me this was way to short.
Just my 2 cent anyway. Enjoy.

    Adventages:
+ amazing narrative that can't be told in any another medium
+ stunning soundtrack (the best video game soundtrack I have ever heard)
    + interesting however depressing world

I originally skipped Automata because I just thought it would just be a stupid game about a robot in a short skirt. Never have I ever been so wrong in my life, the story for this game was down right amazing and the soundtrack was down right chilling and gave me goosebumps during certain scenes. I don't want to give anything a away but the twists and turns of this game will have you holding your controller in your hand and just staring at the screen in shock and awe. Theres not much else to say about this game, go and buy it right now and you will not regret it.

On a less positive note I do feel the only fan service thing of the game is a bit ridiculous given the atmosphere of the world and the seriousness of the plot the fan service really has no place in the game and originally made me skip it. However do not make the same mistake I made, go buy it.

I hold FFX to a high standard and I believe Automata is better if not at the same level of FFX in terms of story and soundtrack

The game is pretty impressive in a few aspects: history, level design, soundtrack. I also found the game more difficult than I've imagined....the saving is soulsike, you need to checkpoint in order to save. One thing I really disliked was the death. if you use all your options against an enemy and you die, once you're back you'll have 0 potions. How can you survive the fight this way?

I felt difficult in understanding the gameplay, it's not very well explained, as the developer really wanted to show everything as an android program. The hack and slash action is beautiful, but I found it limited. I've played several hack and slash games, and this is not my favorite. DmC Reboot for PS4 is a better option if you're looking for action, and NieR Automata is a smoother option.

I only played the Route A and had other 3 endings (short ones). I really wanted to play the Route C but I couldn't find enough material to teach me how to do it, and didn't feel like going over the game again (didn't feel it was worth it).

I felt the characters could have done with some transitional animation between walking and running but, since you spend most of your time dashing and sprinting, that's a fairly minor niggle. I also found the middle section a tad choresome sometimes, but it doesn't drag on and there's some great new gameplay involved. That's all I can think of to deny Nier: Automata 10/10. It's a truly great game: the story is magnificent, the combat is varied and tons of fun in and of itself, the visual presentation and soundtrack are equally beautiful, the upgrade paths are complex and satisfying... it all amounts to a deeply rich and rewarding experience and one I look forward to repeating on the Xbox, after the passage of time.

    Gorgeousness. 9/10.

In fact, the only reason I bought this game was because it was on sale and I had seen that it got good reviews, but I was complete unsure of whether I would like the game or not. To say this game exceeded my expectations would be a massive understatement.

The second I began playing this game, I instantly loved it, as the game throws you into one of the most diverse and memorable tutorials in video game history. You begin by playing through a 2D shooter-like level, before then moving into a 3D hack-and-slash playstyle that feels so much better than I ever could have dreamed of it being. From there on out, I could not stop playing this game, as it succeeds so well in almost every aspect I can think of. As I said before, the gameplay and combat are fantastic, because not only does the game give you many different types of weapons to use (all of which work really well) but all of the actions go together so well, such as the pod's ability to use many different types of powers (lasers, shields, giant hammers, etc.) and the very responsive dodging. In addition, the soundtrack is top notch, and every single song throughout the entire game feels so atmospheric and sets the tone perfectly. I found myself listening to the soundtrack for weeks after finishing the game, and even now, I still listen to many of the songs. Other positive aspects of this game include epic boss fights, fun side quests, and interesting lore.

In terms of the game's story, the idea of robots ruling over a post-apocalyptic Earth may seem uninspired and unoriginal, but the formula and execution of the story are both done so well that it makes this one of the best stories in video game history. I won't go too in depth on the plot, but I will go over a rough summary: it involves an organization of android soldiers called "Yorha" that was created by humans as a last ditch effort to fight back against the robots on Earth and save humanity. The story centers around the androids "2B" and "9S" who complete many missions under the command of Yorha in order to exterminate the robots on Earth and help bring humanity back home. Throughout the course of the game, you will encounter numerous shocking plot twists, memorable characters, and unforgettable lore and dialogue. Now, the story does require multiple playthroughs in order to experience everything, but this is not a bad thing, as you will play as a different character during each playthrough and see the story from a different perspective each time. I won't spoil anything that occurs, but what I will say is that this will be a story you will never forget.

Unfortunately, even with the huge amount of great aspects that this game brings, it does have shortcomings. Firstly, there is very little reason to try and explore the world of this game, as you will rarely ever find anything spectacular. You might find one or two cool things, but otherwise it isn't worth your time to do a whole lot of exploring. Secondly, some of the bullet-shooter minigames you are forced to play are way too hard. In fact, I encountered several that I swear were almost completely impossible to beat unless you put the game on easy mode, which is always a sign of bad game design. Finally, the game should've have a few more interesting side quests than it does have. Some of them are indeed great, but a lot of them don't feel worth your time and effort.

All and all, Nier: Automata is an incredible game that falls just short of being a masterpiece. But regardless, this is an absolute must-have title for PS4 and PC gamers alike, and one you definitely will not forget.

Nier automata is one of the best games I have ever played in my 15 years ( i am 28 years old) as a ¨gamer¨ the lore/plot is top tier, worthy of 10/10 without a doubt, the combat gameplay is fast and enjoyable (60fps!!) you cant get bored playing as 2B*, the music is gorgeous is one of the best OST in the history of games (maybe i am overrating it. . . .but i doubt it. . .) i cant express with words how amazing is the music in the game, there are only 2 ¨bad things¨ about nier utomata:
one is the graphics, that are kinda lame for being released in 2017, but is worth for having 60 fps on Ps4.
the second one has a spoiler:
the game has 3 principal routes, A, B and C, A and C are top tier and worth all the time you can spend in the game, but route b. . . . you play as 9s he´s clearly not a fighter so the combat gameplay gets from 10/10 to 3/10 (is like being in heaven and then fall to the ground!) is really bad but to get route C you have to pass route B . . . so the game gets boring. apart from that, the lore revealed in route B worth the whole route. you cant get disappointed with the game if you haven't played it go and buy it is amazing!

Is hard to think that this comes after such a flawed game like Drakgengard 3 (which I really like but it's just kind of bad) but I guess that Platinum have an important role in that huge leap. On the negative side, I felt the combat system too simple, feels more like a God of War than Devil May Cry and the difficulty spikes are just ridiculous. I played normal for the most part but the thing played almost itself but when switching to hard it was like x5 times harder, I mean there's a Very Hard difficulty which pretty much everything one hits you but I would really liked to have something in the middle of Normal - Hard. Anyway, a masterpiece. Expand

The reality is that while the art is amazing, the soundtrack stellar, and the writing has wtf moments that are really cool...

Graphics look old, the world is big but empty and with so much backtracking the game has you doing, it starts to annoy you.

You can make a postapocaliptical setting but at least fill it with stuff besides robots and ruins and just two different types of animals.

Regarding difficulty there is a huge imbalance in between modes: on easy the game plays for you.On normal the game is easy. On hard you are mostly 2 hit ko regardless of your upgrades or level. And on very hard you are 1 hit ko by anything, even enemies at lvl1.

The boss fights are cool when you fight robots but uninteresting when you fight humanoids cause these boss fights share the same mechanics every fight, with the same moves, and sometimes they get a couple extra attacks but it just feels like fighting the same boss with just slight variations.
In addition, the game makes these boss fights challenging by making the bosses just hit sponges. Its like if you play skyrim on legendary difficulty where it takes forever to do some decent damage.

The story is badly written, you may like it but it is badly executed. There are major plot holes even if you do the side quests that expand on the main story line and explain it, even if they explain it, it is bad writing.

Not to mention these side quest are tedious and boring fetch quests and escort missions.

The bullet hell and 2d sections in the game are fun. The rest is very dragging and boring, and from time to time you watch some crazy stuff happen which is really cool.

    Overall:

    Graphics: 5/10. Really old looking

Story: 6/10. Interesting but with major plotholes and just bad writing.

Gameplay: 6/10. Combat can feel fun but theres not much enemy variety which contributes to boredom and while robot boss fights are fun the humanoid ones are uninspiring and repetitive.

Score: 6. Interesting and fun some times but mediocre and boring the rest of the time.

NieR: Automata is one of the closest a videogame has come to being a piece of art in my opinion. The story, visuals, style and music are all incredible and this is bolstered by being a really slick, challenging and fun game to play. Its pacing is a bit inconsistent, and this intrudes on the overall experience a little, preventing it from reaching the perfect score it's so near to.

The plot for this game is more than just a story - the philosophical nature of the world where robots and androids fight a war on behalf of other races presents so many deep, meaningful questions. The characters (mainly 2B and 9S) are also fantastic, and the overall experience is pensive, mournful and cathartic all at the same time. This is definitely one of the best-written games I've encountered in a while and is on par with some of the golden age Final Fantasies or Metal gear Solid's most impactful moments for storytelling. It's hard to talk too much without spoiling, but this is way deeper than any videogame has gone before, and I'm still thinking about the wider implications of the plot now.

Visually, this game is stunning. Its actual graphics may not be on par with Uncharted 4, for example, but instead NieR is grounded by a beautiful washed out pallet which extends from environments to menus to costumes. It's easily the most stylish game on PS4, sophisticated and thought out. The appearance of bright red lasers and purple explosions are jarring against the wreckage of utopia in which the game is set. Particle effects are brilliant during battle too, and the world was a joy to explore (something that is always recommended and rewarded).

Gameplay-wise, NieR is excellent. The battle system is aggressive, fast-paced and weighty (think Bayonetta) with more than enough customisable depth to make it varied. Lots of weapons, plug-in chips (upgrades) and chances to grind for levels are available, in this respect it's traditional RPG. Plug-in chips are difficult to get your head around but ultimately satisfying. The real place that NieR shines is its constantly-evolving gameplay styles. From hack-n-slash, bullethell, 2D platforming, space invader style shooters, on-rails shooters and overhead action, this game seamlessly blends so many different genres into one and the result is so captivating. Changes are frequent and plot-related, and always refreshing. Bullethell sections in particular are hectic and difficult, but so much fun. Side quests are basic but gratifying and almost always give you something to think about whether it be a minor character's motives, a relic of the old world, or a plot enriching detail.

The game's only flaw in my opinion is the pacing. It is designed to be played through multiple times from different perspectives to truly open up the wonderful story and characters, but the 2nd act in particular (while adding the gameplay element of hacking into the mix) is slow, and has a lot of recycled material. I see what the aim was story-wise, and respect and enjoyed this aspect, but in terms of playing the game, I was extremely put off by this. I was hesitant to return at times, but always found myself eventually enjoying it again. The third act is great, and worth the slog. But the mid-section slump is significant and stands in the way of me awarding this otherwise flawless game a 10. A game you love should be consistent throughout and while the other aspects in NieR mentioned are, the pacing change is so abrupt (if you want to do side-quests and get the full low-down on the plot) it is hard to ignore.

I can't recommend NieR: Automata enough, despite the pacing issue. It's a tough, engrossing and exhilarating world, perhaps a bit anime and melodramatic at points (not a bad thing), but the thoughts raised about artificial intelligence, humanity, fate and purpose are truly magnificent and unlike anything I've ever experienced. Get this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished this game, watching E ending. Since playing this game with too much expectation, I feel a little bit awkward when I realized this is the end. (I thought the factors people praise on this game just didn't show up yet even just before the ending.)

First of all, the scale is too small to call it the war of species. Of course it's ok if it's just for efficiency of directing, but it's too much small reminding of children's role play, which I can't be immersed.

It pursued open world game but I think totally failed. Every sub-quest wasn't interesting or intriguing because all they are too simple errands (at war?) and following rewards are not attractive at all.

What I really don't get it is why people admire this common Japanese subculture story that somewhere I've already seen. And the way of disclosing truths is not that dramatic. (It feels like when I saw how Assassin was originated at Assassin Creed Origin. Just... flat) And Why does 9S fall in love with 2B in the first place? Was there something between them that I don't understand? Or just for her nice butt like everyone praising this game?

I admit music is awesome, but graphic is ... sometimes it doesn't seem released in 2017. Quite many textures have very low definition with blur effect. But overall, the colors or atmosphere is quite emotional.

The soundtrack enraptures from the very start, and might just be what ultimately makes Nier a classic. It's intense, it's tragic, and as the best JRPG's do, it completely knocks you out with the timely vocal pieces. The music accompanies the most successfully ambitious story in any RPG, and one of the best in gaming history. Like many before it, Nier centers around AI existentialism, and what it means to be human. It does so with a beautiful stroke of genius, as we follow androids and robots living in a post-human world, both beginning to realize that they are becoming more than the sum of their parts. The gameplay is robust and explosive, but the game struggles with the weighting of its leveling system in the later playthroughs. Perhaps Nier's biggest sin is that the path to the game's masterful ending is fraught with traps, and even I had to look up the proper ending on YouTube, despite 40+ hours of gameplay. Despite these flaws, Nier is passion personified, and a video game that others in the industry should aspire to. Expand

The story is quite involved and intelligently done. It didn't blow my mind, but at least it explored some of the big themes of existence a bit. I mean, that's a big deal in video games. Even if it feels slightly gimmicky.

There's a famous in-game performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' that I looked forward to. But it was just silly joke. Didn't even pretend or try to live up to Shakespeare's play.

I file Nier Automata under 'Japanese Sci-fi Action' and say it succeeded at what it tried to do. It's just not much more than entertainment, and certainly not as high-brow or philosophical as some people claim.

And the gameplay is not as innovative or groundbreaking as I expected. At no point did it make me go "Wait, a game can do THAT?!". It does mix up various mini-games, but Final Fantasy had mini-games too. It didn't blow my mind in either series.

I did actually play through the entire game and got the credits-mini-game. I invested plenty of time and consideration for the game, but it's just not the mind-blowing game that I expected. It's great as an open-world action game... but some of the fetch quests p*ssed me off.

There is no other game which has such subtle writing,, deep empathy with the supporting cast, and the pure weirdness that comes with automata. What is initially a fairly straightforward game becomes a master piece with each hour you play. Sure; the graphics are a little rough in places and enemy variety is a little thin. But this game is about way more then that; It is about seeing yourself in these characters as they live, die, and recreate. The creator wants you to know that existence is tangible and fraught, and the story bends at its knees to get the player to feel this anguish. It succeeds.

There are a few bugs here and there, mostly related to the frame rate. But still, this surpasses all of this generations games in terms of story and curiosity. My only personal bug is the possibility to "buy" trophies post game. Maybe the developers were taking the piss out of the current love for trophies / achievements, or making a dig at our own reasons for existence. Either way it took some of the joy out of the end game for me, since I enjoy that end game grind that i both love and hat with JRPGs

Nier: Automata is a spiritual successor to the original Nier released in 2008, its story taking place thousands of years after the 1st game. Some of Nier's characters and events are mentioned in Automata, but otherwise the new game is standalone. A long time before Automata's events, aliens conquered planet Earth, and the remnants of mankind were driven away from their home planet taking refuge to the Moon. Humanity then created androids to battle against machines controlled by the aliens, resulting in a never ending war that has been raging for thousands of years. Players assume the role of androids 2B, 9S and A2 who fight against the machines. The story is told in 3 short playthroughs called "Routes" and features a total of 26 endings (5 main and 21 "joke" endings which can be triggered by things like eating a poisonous fish that kills you). Route A tells the story from the point of view of android 2B. Then Route B tells the same story from the point of view of 9S, plus we are provided with more info on the machines' past and background. The final Route C takes place after Routes A/B and narrates the conflict between androids 9S and A2, where both try to end the war, leading to the final story endings. The game explores sci-fi themes such as planetary war, alien invasion, AI, robots, consciousness, self-awareness, etc. It's interesting and has its share of twists and turns, but it's a bit of a mess by the end.

Nier: Automata is an open world game with main missions and side quests, where hack n' slash and old-school shoot-em-up mechanics are implemented. You are accompanied by flying pods that can shoot enemies or do special attacks. 2B and A2 are straight forward melee fighters, whereas 9S is more of a hacker because he is a support unit. Hacking enemies is presented as playing an old-school arcade shoot-em-up bullet hell mini-game, and successfully beating the mini-stage results in dealing damage to the target enemy. The bullet hell mechanic is allso present in the enemies where both minions and bosses attack you by shooting multiple spheres in patterns along with physical attacks. Not only that, but the game often changes camera perspective and at times turns from 3rd person view into a 2D side-scrolling platformer, a 2D top-down vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up, and a top-down 2D twin-stick shooter. Variety is the name of the game in Nier: Automata.

There is also a DLC which lets you fight in an arena against the respective CEOs of the game's publisher Square Enix and the game's developer PlatinumGames. It's surely hilarious and breaks the fourth wall.

The game's soundtrack is awesome. There are plenty of melodies and songs that I can't forget. It's easily one of the best videogame OSTs out there. And the english voice acting is good.

Nier: Automata is not perfect, though. The enemy design is uninspired, with units looking like tin cans (at least these minions come in many shapes and sizes). The map isn't really a well designed open world like that of Horizon: Zero Dawn or other genre staples, more like a collage of different stages, and sadly there is an abundance of invisible walls. And then there are the performance problems. The engine used has optimisation issues that prevent the game from running smoothly. Whether on PS4, PS4 Pro or PC you can't lock at 60 fps and there is plenty of random stutter and hitches. Graphics look bland, and pop-in of geometry and shadows at close range is visible even to the untrained eye. And the latter half of Route C is filled with boring arena fights. All these negatives don't mean Nier: Automata is a bad game, actually it's a good one, but they prevent it from reaching greatness.

Overall, Nier: Automata is a great game even if it has some flaws. I definitely recommend it to every gamer.

Here's an honest opinion from someone who's not a fanboy of ps4 or japanese devs:
Nier is a very nice 3rd person open world action rpg. It has beautiful environments, engaging stroy for the 1st part of the game (more on that later), fantastic atmosphere and one of the most beautiful soundtracks I have ever heard in a video game.

However, the story is not complete until you reach part 3 of the game, and to get to part 3 you have to play part 1 all over again with tiny variations (call it part 2). It's such a chore that by the end of part 2 I was completely burned out on the game. Still, I got to part 3, and after an interesting story-filled section what does the game ask you to do? Go to 3 different places and collect keys. That's right, fetch quests in the middle of the action. That completely kills any momentum the game has going. Given how atrocious the save system is in this game (you can easily lose up to an hour of progress) and cheap deaths from some of the enemies, I feel like the game simply does not appreciate the time of the person playing. So, I give it a solid 7. It's a good game with some major flaws, but it's artificially stretched and level-gated. Part 1 is a lot of fun, but if you value your time, just stop there and watch the rest on youtube.

Enemies to fight are basically machines based on a core design in many variations. The hacking mini game is an incredible basic shoot em up. Many weapons to find and some items to collect and upgrade, but they hardly make a difference. Difficulty on normal is near not existent.

Overburding amount of backtracking and revisiting the areas, over and over again. 3 runs long, with minor changes. Fast travel and loading are oppressing with slow animations. Feels like the game was stretched as far as humanly bearable.

Was it worth it for me? No. I was highly annoyed even before the first ending, but you are supposed to stick with it, it get's better. Well it did, but in the end, not enough at all. Endings are full of ... not alot at all. Like the game.

Nier Automata is unique in the sense that it is a story and media that can only be presented as a video game. It wouldnt be able to express it's full message or themes in a movie or book. Nier is a game that will stick with you after you finish it, consuming your thoughts and even make you consider different philosophies for your real life. Most people (including myself) originally picked up Nier because it was another action game made by Platinum Games, and perhaps the fan service got to you as well (2B is beautiful). But if you stay for the entire journey, you will find something truly unique in today's gaming, and an unforgettable experience, that tries things that most games are afraid of.

This game would have higher ratings, and it makes sense if you dissect the actual gameplay, because there are flaws there, and I'm sure alot of critics never truly finished the game. However, if you truly love video games, and they are more than just simple play things, or mindless junk. You must do yourself the pleasure of experiencing one of the best games ever made.

NieR: Automata is stunning. It's a shining example of what games can and should be. It's always on the move, changing up and finding new ways to challenge or surprise you. It took me awhile to pick it up, but when I finally got my hands on it and played it, I couldn't have spent my money better.

I was originally turned off by the idea of another open world action game, but I'd say this is the best one out there right now. The world is beautiful, and actually really well design. The different sections of the map are all different biomes, but rather than just changing the style of the setting, they have drastic shifts in design (for example, the desert is empty and barren with lots of enemies, the forest has narrowing and winding paths in a sea of trees, and the ocean swallowed some of the nearby buildings, giving you some platforming sections).

Additionally, the story is surprisingly well done. I was worried that robots leading the main story would be a bad idea, but the way they help tell the narrative surpasses anything I expected. They have more emotional responses to things than most other games that sell themselves on their story. I won't spoil anything because I highly recommend that every goes out and experiences it for themselves.

It's also a game where having multiple endings isn't a lame way of cramming in variety for variety's sake. They actually matter to the full game, so much so that if you got one and stopped playing, you'll only have scratched the surface. I hate to be one of those people who tell you that you're not playing a game right by only getting one ending or doing it a certain way, but that's absolutely the case with NieR, more so than any other game.

The gameplay was another point of concern I had before the game's release. Given it's an RPG and from what I'd seen in early gameplay showings, I was worried it would have some confusing and unintuitive menus like Mass Effect Andromeda, and more recently, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. However, this was hardly a complaint, as you level up automatically, and choosing special skills and abilities and leveling up weapons are all super easy. But besides that, the gameplay is excellent. Combat handles well, the occasional platforming sections are really well done and don't happen too often, and every other different style of gameplay plays just as well as the others. This is showcased perfectly in the first 40 minutes, where it goes from being a top-down, twin-stick shooter, to a third person action game, to a 2D platformer, to a top-down platformer, then back to a third person action game, and each one transitions into the next as smooth as butter.

Overall, NieR is easily my favourite game of the year, which in a year with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild is no small feat. This is also already up there with some of the best games I've ever played, and might just be the best. I'm really glad it didn't get criminally underrated like the first NieR did. 10/10

I can't describe the story or characters without spoiling everything, so let's just say both are very likeable, very interesting, and very tragic. The controls are fantastic and the gameplay is smooth, this is Platinum Games at their very best.

Automata's music is also absolutely fantastic and very catchy, I got my platinum trophy 2 weeks ago and haven't played the game since, but I'm still humming Beautiful Song to this day. It's a masterpiece and I wholeheartedly recommend you buy the soundtrack.

Sadly the same can't be said about the graphics - they're hideous and the game looks very, very bad on my 4K TV. No antialiasing whatsoever, jagged edges everywhere, low resolution textures, NPC models look like something from the PS2 era... It's really bad. Fortunately, the game itself is so good that I was more than happy to overlook this.

    Pros:
    - complex story with multiple endings
    - great replay value, multiple characters, different paths
    - likeable characters
    - fantastic music!
    - great controls
    - enjoyable combat

    Cons:
    - terrible graphics

The best this game features is a very smooth and visually pleasing combat hack and slash, before I know it i was smashing buttons and it didn't feel all that repetitive because of the visual fireworks on screen as you fight. The story was interesting, and it got more interesting as the game went on. I will say you'll have to atleast play through this game a few times to be satisfied of the story. This game is definitely not for someone looking for a 10 hour game. Pros: Excellent and visually pleasing combat, some loot worth grinding/looking for, story, great soundtrack and atmosphere. The So-So= Ok open world and sidequest, graphics look last gen. Cons: can get repetitive to some, not meant for people who don't like to grind, takes multiple play through to be satisfied of story. 8.5/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Completion: Endings A, B, C, D, E and a few extra ones on normal difficulty. 85% quest .

    Pros:
    - Great character design
    - One of the most innovative stories in years that only works within the medium. However, the more surprising parts of the game are less exciting if you have already played the original.
    - Great characters and character development - definitely some of the best in the medium. 9S stands out in particular.
    - Ending E is incredibly powerful and greatly synthesizes many of the themes presented throughout the game.
    - The narrative associated with the side quests are astonishing in how thematically consistent they are.
    - Battle system is a huge upgrade from the original. Although this is one of Platinum's weaker offerings in terms of the actual depth of combat, it serves its purpose and looks great.
    - Incredible soundtrack and voice acting. Overall, the sound direction is superb. The final credits song is a stand-out and might be my best track of the year.
    - Bullet hell parts are fun and stand out since they're so uncommon in modern games
    - A lot of cool ludonarrative tricks. Every single part of the "game" is also part of the narrative.

    Cons:
    - Awful map system. Although they do contextualize it within the game, still feels lacking.
    - Many parts of the game feel repetitive - particularly Route B. Although this is partially intentional, it doesn't make it any less boring to play.
    - Route C is underwritten. The narrative would have been greatly bolstered by just a little bit more explanation of what was going on. This is more or less true throughout the entire game, but it is critically lacking here.
    - Side quests are simple fetch quests.
    - Weapon system is poor. Few if any weapons feel significantly different from each other (only 4 main categories) besides from appearance. For a 40 hour game, greater variation in weapon type or weapon movesets would be very much welcome. Same basic principle applies to the pod weapons.
    - Many janky parts such as the millions of invisible walls littering the environment.
    - Environments are ugly. Resemble a last-gen MMO.
    - Traversing the world is very annoying before you can fast travel.

    Final Word:
NieR: Automata is a fantastic and unique experience, even more so if you have never played the original NieR. Although the combat and navigation can become repetitive and sometimes even frustrating, the incredible soundtrack, voice acting, lore, and narrative more than make up for it. Yoko Taro's voice truly shines through in this monumental title.

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
