I really struggled to see why there was so much hype around Nier:Automata. One of the biggest areas of praise I heard about N:A as how powerful and original the story is. One of the biggest areas of praise I heard about N:A as how powerful and original the story is. Whilst it isn't bad, it doesn't cover anything that hasn't been done in sci-fi media numerous times before and relies on anime clichés to try and deliver an emotional punch. This is made all the worse by the fact that in order to see the full story you need to play the game 3 times. If you can't get into the game on your first play through then you are in for a painful slog trying to see everything, especially as the second playthrough is by far the worse.

From a gameplay perspective this is really poor. There are some epic moments. The prologue delivers an exciting introduction to the game and there is a great boss battle just past the halfway point of the first route but these moments are few and far between. Combat is so simple that it quickly becomes tedious. As enemies don't block or dodge, the game quickly becomes a case of just mashing square with the occasional dodge required. I didn't expect this to match the depth of combat games such as GoW or DMC but I expected at least a bit of skill to be required rather than just the mindless button masher that this is. RPG elements are also paper thin offering no depth beside

I could probably forgive the poor combat and lack of depth if the open world was interesting and fun to explore. Unfortunately this is bland and empty with nothing really to see and do bar some really tedious side quests that are no more inventive than fetch quests or killing a bunch of enemies. There is so much backtracking throughout this game both through the main story and side quests that it quickly becomes soul destroying. This is made all the worse by how ugly the open world is, looking like a late PS2 game. I appreciate that this is a low budget game but there are plenty of low budget games that still manage to look like they belong in this generation by using an art style that is appropriate for the budget. This would look so much better if the devs had gone for a cel-shaded style rather than trying to adopt a more realistic approach.

One thing that N:A does do really well is mesh numerous different game styles together seamlessly. One minute you can be playing a hack and slash game, then an old school space shooter like Galaga and then a Metroidvania style level. But the novelty of this quickly wears off as the general gameplay just doesn't have enough depth to keep things interesting.

Nier:Automata is really a niche game that is well suited for those who have a deep interest in Japanese anime culture but will feel a chore for most other people.

BORING, bland, typical, power fantasy trash - clunky combat system, easily broken leveling system... Unsatisfying, and unengaging combat...

I swear the only reason people loved this game so much: was the "realistic" anime graphics... and of course... SHOCK and awe...

    2B's perfectly toned... METALIC, ass.

Go play DMC5, or literally ANY Platnium game: that came before this.

JUEGASO en todo sentido, desde el inicio muy dinámico y divertido, aunque el primer boss sea a la vista "difícil", lo puedes completar y la banda sonora es espectacular.

She wears borderline fetish gear, with a much too short dress, garters, and fishnets, and the only thing managing to keep this game as M rated, is a VERY thin strip of white cloth, barely covering her genitals, and wedged between her asscheeks (and her uhh, "Lips" as much as I hate to say it). There is one other uniform in the game, and it's a ridiculous suit of armor, requires very specific story choices, and takes about 30 hours too reach. The DLC has a "revealing outfit"(as if the default one isnt revealing enough) which is one thigh-high, and a nightgown.

Everytime you run, jump, or climb a ladder, between wind picking up her dress, and some crazy "coincidental" camera angles, you get your camera pointed directly at her exposed caboose, and numerous cutscenes show you ass and cameltoe.

and don't you dare tell me this is empowerment, or story accurate. This is the same as Quiet in metal gear, or the female armor in monster hunter. Japanese games tend to not treat women the same way as western games. That's it. One of the devs even said he solely chose it cause it's hot.

It's not. It's cringey. It's like watching a Tarantino movie, but it's ALL footscenes. Like "come on bro? have you no shame". I don't honestly care that much about feminism or things like that, and I don't care if someone objectifies a fictional person, but it's ridiculous that the devs force us to stare at that BS. Grow the **** up. It's greasy.

N:A doesn't do much of anything that hasn't been done already, and it doesn't do any of it justice. The world is really small, kinda ugly to look at and overall not gratifying or rewarding to explore. Graphics aren't everything but most environments don't even look good artistically. RPG elements are really tame, almost non existent despite the game being advertised as an RPG. Sidequests are mostly fetch quests, NPCs are mostly lifeless, just standing around staring blankly ahead like action figures.

The story can be entertaining but whether or not you still care by the time you get to the good stuff will depend on how many times you can stand being forced to retread the same bland locations, since the full story is locked behind NG+.

The combat functions fine but even that is screwed to a degree because your only options for difficulty are play on autopilot, or die in 2 hits and go back to your last manual save, which feels totally out of place in a game like this and ends up making it even more tedious than the easier mode.

It's a serviceable enough hack n slash if you're just looking for something to turn your brain off and slice up enemies, just beware of the hype surrounding this one.... It's just a freaking toaster!

Looking it up online I had found out that the only way to complete this quest is to quit and reload the game and do that quest yet again. It was at this point, I realized this game has no respect for me alot of the time.

At first this game's aesthetic and unique chip upgrade system. had me thinking this might be one of my favorite rpgs. But you've heard the hype, lets get down to brass tacks the mainstream reviewers blatantly ignored.

-Grossly poorly designed and super cringily cheesy shirtless anime boys turn out to be the villains, and ruin the games entire aesthetic and believability

-There are no level indicators for missions which makes for tons of frustration and backtracking and wasted time

-seeing enemies level up when I do to stay the same level as me just feels like cheap plastic

-There is absolutely no warning that you are about to progress the story to a point of no return and loose all those unfinished quests you've already completed 75% of.

-I did a side quest that took me all around the map and it gave me a key to a mysterious elevator. Found the elevator and it wouldn't open, had to look it up online, turns out because I didn't have a character with me for the rest of the game due to story reasons, I could no longer go down that elevator. No story reason for it, just a blatant big ol' slap in the face.

-A quest where you hunt down defectors just straight up broke

-Make sure you save in the middle of big sequences because just because you think it would autosave after a big fight while the action is still building, it may not

-Plot starts strong and inspiring, then gets generic, predictable, and juvenile

-I was told i was given a chip and could take it off, spent a long time looking for it. Turns out that chip doesn't actually exist, unlike every other chip in the game, such as the chip that is your life, which you can remove to kill yourself.

-Finding stuff the world is an annoying chore, had to keep looking up a guide to find how to get places.

-there is even a part where you get in a giant cannon and have to shoot a giant epic enemy, and they don't even let you aim. might as well have been a quicktime event

This game is verrry overhyped, and i really hope they come out with a sequel that is much much better, because there is some cool stuff in this game.

    [Update]

-upon watching the rest of the story on youtube, it is over drawn out despair porn, do not play this game if you want to be happy

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow I don't even know how to start this one. Let's say this: Nier: Automata isn´t "nier perfect", it is a straight masterpiece. Everything about the game is beautiful.
It has a cast of great characters that have defined relationships and personalities that make it easy to connect with them (the humor involving them is also great). I loved everyone (even the operators and the pods). The enemies are also amazing and always come with an interesting story and purpose. 2B, 9S, A2, Pascal, just to name a few, are characters whose stories get developed during the game and we end up loving each one because we are able to see through their perspective.
The combat is simply amazing, full of different ways of fighting your enemies. The strikes are powerful and the agility of the androids accompanied with a fantastic evade button makes for great fights. Each character has a different style we'll get accustomed to (hacking is really fun).
The goddamn music is simply the best in video game history. Each zone theme was beautiful and represented said area perfectly ("city ruins", the desert complex theme, "the forest kingdom", the GODDAMN AMUSEMENT PARK THEME), the battle themes are godly ("become as gods", "this cannot continue", "birth of a wish"), the fight with Simone while "a beautiful song" plays and is synchronized with the gameplay ... love it. These are just some examples. I just want to end this section by saying that "The weight of the world" hits differently after finishing the game.
The story and the world are extremely philosophical. The story takes the characters to the limits of their "emotions" and throughout the game it shows examples of characters facing hard questions like : the purpose of their life? why do they still live if they cannot feel?. Some acquire emotions in their attempt to copy the humans but are confronted with fear, others with desire. The machines form family ties and try to avenge their fallen loved ones. Both the machines and the androids end up acting like humans. In the route C and D we see how both sides (especially the androids) try to find meaning in their lives when their sole purpose is destroyed. Both sides try to live in a world without god, without values and by doing that these pieces of AI end up practicing free will.
Ending E is beautiful. Everything about it is perfect: how the pods cannot let the androids they actually grew attached to die so by refusing for that to happen they exercise free will and develop consciousness; the player has to fight the credits, which represent the creators or God, while the weight of the world plays...but you can't and fail. Then after a few attempts the kindness of total strangers, who deleted their save data in a selfless act, allows you to fight but this time not alone and the weight of the world plays now in chorus. Then the post credits scene shows that there is meaning to it all and only you can decide your future. The game ends by asking if you want to delete your save to help others. This goes in line with the theme of the game: you can keep your save but you can try to be kinder and give purpose to your work (by allowing it to aid others in their quest to finish this game).
Nier: Automata is a masterpiece. A game that transcends its medium and tries to question its players while also giving them a thrilling experience. Everything about this work of art is beautiful and purposeful. Nier will certainly be an experience I won't forget. A journey of emotional and philosophical moments and ideas.

The problem for me is that the world itself gets boring fast, which is mainly an issue because this game is designed to easily surpass 50+ hours.
Fixing this is not too difficult (but costly of course). Fleshout the world more, more details, more npcs and most importantly more areas to explore. Revisiting the same places over and over was very tedious by the end.

With that said I still enjoyed the game and wish to see more like it. Hopefully developers can make some of these improvements, looking forward to what is next.

A masterpiece in innovative storytelling. Truly something unique in the videogame medium.
The gameplay costantly has something new to offer, with costant camera view shifts, melee and bullethell sections, minigames and much more.
It tells a deep and meaningful story without boring you to hell with useless cutcenes, or massive exposition dumps, but using the tools the gaming media offers.

It's my favorite game of the decade, it's just that good, money and budget don't make a great game, Nier is at best a AA but to tell it's story, a story about humanity, about what make a human being you first need a direction, and thanks To Yoko Taro, we have that.

I loved the first game despite middling reviews and this is even better. Just like the first game the soundtrack is amazing. The story demands more play throughs to get the whole picture. There are multiple endings including some comedy ones.
Like the first game it asks lots of questions and really makes you question your actions. The graphics are good for a AA game

The characters are amazing and unique as these androids struggle with the exact same questions we do when it comes to suffering, understanding, and meaning of life. Their journey and character development is a joy to watch as they fight a long and arduous war with the machines; quest to help others and always question the meaning behind all their actions. The full credit ending was amazing, bringing in other players to help you and giving you a choice to be selfless and help another player in the future. Besides the incredible journey and story, the world design and map changes keep the game fresh and beautiful. The combat mechanics are some of the best and interactive I have ever played, great combat variety and challenging. Best music in any video game I have ever heard hands down. Overall, nothing wrong with it at all. Be sure to keep playing past ending A, B, C, and D there is a lot of story still there. This game truly deserves a perfect score, the only reason I feel it wasn’t more popular is because it didn’t gain much publicity as it launched. I also read the short book associated with this game, it also adds amazing detail in short stories of A2, 2B, and 9S that you would love if you loved the original game. This time, I got to the end of the prologue that takes 30-45 minutes to complete and died, only to find out it doesn't save the game until after you finish it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I LOVED the first Nier, but I really wasn't a big fan of this one. The environments are drab and the combat feels very one-note. But my biggest gripe is a narrative one. It has an interesting story to tell, but it's undercut by the idea that all the androids have another version of themselves living in their HQ that will activate upon their destruction. What's the point of crying over a fallen comrade if their just going to reawaken in HQ with all of their memories? In this world, death means almost nothing. Why would 2B cry over 9S being destroyed when it means literally nothing is lost? There are no stakes if death means nothing. If that narrative bullet point were not there, it would be a profound and deep story...but it IS there. So, for me at least, it ruins the entire story. Expand

Every game has a magic to them that is woven through the intricate and expansive storytelling and absolutely compelling characters that these facets alone makes the experience worth experiencing. Where they earlier games fell short a bit but gradually improved was gameplay, While the later games treated the played to a very fun and evolving ride Nier automata takes everything that worked in every other game and turns it up to 11. Thanks to the partnership with Platinum game Nier Automata and the amazing world and Story of Yoko Taro and the insanely addicting and complex gameplay of a Platinum Title. The result is a simply Masterwork, its a game like nothing else that exists, while borrowing from nearly every type of game that exists, and it makes it as fun as all them components combined could be,
Nier Automata is full of hidden meaning and setpieces that are designed to make the player think about the big questions and while I usually hate when this type of stuff is forced into a game, here is is subtle and not preachy, it just stories and you take from them what you take from them.

I was disappointed by the story and found it very dull. However, after reading on the internet, you're actually supposed to keep playing and reload your save file after you finish the first ending, and boy did the rest of the game not disappoint. By the end of Route E I was nearly in tears, and this is coming from someone that doesn't cry very often in video games. The combat was fun although the most fun I had was playing as 9S and utilizing his hacking abilities to defeat enemies. It was a lot more satisfying than the repetitive button mashing of 2B and A2. With slightly tighter combat and story resources accessible in the game rather than real world novellas, I would give this a 10/10. NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.
