The gameplay is an improvement of the previous Nier, and with the help of Platinum Games's refinements and smoother 60fps update(compared to 30fps of the original) slaying robots feels really solid and satisfying. The art design and music are also amazing, enhancing the feel and tone of the story. I recommend that you play the demo, and then buy it if you liked the demo.

Nier doesn't just manage to seamlessly combine different game elements, but what it does with story telling...oh boy...saying it transcends gaming wouldn't be an exaggeration. The only thing I can say without spoiling anything is, make sure you play past the first ending. A true trailblazer. Never before have I played a game that was capable of switching genres on the fly. Nier Automata is everything I had hoped Final Fantasy XV would of been. At first I was sceptical but I am glad I took the plunge. I would love to see more games genre-bend in the future.

As for the combat and the large changes in gameplay, I think you'll get a lot of mixed opinions from people, but personally I'm playing through fresh once more. The gameplay is good enough to make doing everything again on a harder difficulty appealing, but maybe that's me. I also don't want this game to leave my life for as long as I can hold onto it.

The characters are very charismatic and, despite being androids, they feel more human than many other characters in other games. The story combines comedy and tragedy and I always want to play more and more in order to know about the thrilling mystery behind the alien machines taking over the Earth, humanity living on the moon and the Yorha corporation.

The gameplay is made in PlatinumGames. It’s very funny and addictive and, despite being an action-RPG game, sometimes it feels like a shoot-em up, sometimes a pure hack and slash and some other times a 2.5D platformer.

The soundtrack is gorgeous and is also some of the best I heard recently. There are all kind of tracks, from epic choral pieces to more acoustic songs accompanied of children chants. These tracks suit perfectly all the events and locations in the game. To sum up how good the soundtrack was to me, I can say that whenever I wasn’t playing the game, I was listening to the soundtrack…

The only flaws I found in this game are the graphics, which look a little bit old-fashioned, and some frame rate drops during the game (even playing with a PS4 Pro). It would have been great they included a photo mode.

There are a few good bosses, but there are just as many disappointing ones. The sidequests are hit or miss, and they all boil down to fetch quests.

In the end, despite its flaws, it's very clear that this game has a ton of heart. My inner critic wants to give this an 8/10, but the experience as a whole had such a profound emotional impact on me (mainly thanks to the compelling narrative and the brilliant soundtrack), that I just can't do it. I know this game got sandwiched between some huge releases, but you should definitely keep it on your radar if it's still there.

There is actually a lot of humor in this game which brings some light to a very dark and grim post-apocalyptic setting. Also, game mechanics change up often in this game so it is not just pure hack n' slash. This is also very much an RPG so there is leveling, upgrading weapons, and finding new abilities. This will be my third and final revision of my score/quick review on NieR: Automata. I very rarely give 10s for games and while many can find this game to not be anywhere near that (and even enjoy it still) it is totally acceptable to say that this will not be for everyone. Considering the PC port still hasn't been fixed (let alone any patches for the game since launch on the PS4 either),This will be my third and final revision of my score/quick review on NieR: Automata. I very rarely give 10s for games and while many can find this game to not be anywhere near that (and even enjoy it still) it is totally acceptable to say that this will not be for everyone. Considering the PC port still hasn't been fixed (let alone any patches for the game since launch on the PS4 either), you will likely write the game off as buggy and untested. Even as you come into the game in full circle, characters behave awkwardly at times, quests can be boring to complete, fighting enemies can be mundane and lack spice of variety, the writing can have dips that don't make sense and really alot of its combat and system is pretty easy to exploit. Individually, each mechanic is basic at its core with nothing to write home about. Combined however and you have an experience that is outstanding.

I love how this game is utilized. The way the medium is played is something I rarely see in games and on top of that work and don't come off as pretentious. While Yoko Taro is very blunt and straightforward with his odd persona the reflections of his views on the world are very much in this game and it makes it more interesting to me as a player to see how he feels about something. To put this as easy as I can. NieR: Automata is one giant stage play and philosophical trip of what we humans always seem to think about in our everyday lives to some degree. The world is bland, boring and really lacks any sort of splendor, but THAT'S the beauty of it: it doesn't need pretty graphic engines to prove it and it doesn't need much color to prove it's points. The enemy variety does leave alot to be desired and even after your first act done you'll become tired of fighting them, but THAT is exactly Yoko Taro's point: killing things that are so easy to you or coming at such a repeating pace is only going to numb your enjoyment to the finer moments the game offers.

The characters are odd and eccentric and will clearly act out of character, but perhaps that's the point. 2B is clearly a parody of sorts to the typical male soldier that follows all orders and clearly doesn't want to show feelings or emotions, yet she does and isn't technically human. She says things that contradict her previous quote, so is it a glitch in her system? A mistake by the team? It's easy to see on the surface it's the devs doing this but I playing almost 100 hours of the game has made me tear back the layers it offers and realize so much about myself as a gamer and person.

Considering the game is a budget game on top of that, you get a rare example of a indie/AAA game hybrid that is as niche and unique compared to many other games on the market. It's why despite the issues I might have in performance, it's style and delivery is superb as you finish the true ending and sit back and think hard. If you love art games like Shadow of The Colossus or Journey, then you will understand why you should approach this with a more open mind than simply "is the combat good? is the open world full of great content?" like some critics and people who I think looked at this game all wrong.

A 10/10 game doesn't have to be deemed perfect. Nothing is and no matter the game there will always be flaws. NieR: Automata can have even major flaws, but I tend to judge it also on how much I enjoyed the game. I was skeptical initially but by the end I embraced the game's brilliance close to heart, bought the soundtrack out of respect for Yoko Taro and his team and have not faltered on my stance for the game. If anything, the more I return to the game and look at its layers of understanding, I felt a sense of wonder that I could not find in any other game in my life. Not the graphics, or the combat, but really the medium and how well it's handled that very few games do now in an age where risk is not worth the expense of profit loss.

Call me pretentious, call this game pretentious but I love this game for what it set out to do and nailed it through and through. Yoko Taro and his team crafted a gem that only gets better as I enter back into the game time and time again. Once again, this is not meant to appeal everyone but with it's structure I'd wager it's one of the finest examples of how mixing genres and types can prove wonderful. A 10/10 breaks grounds on what games should try to match and proceed past that with greater effect. NieR: Automata, out of the hundreds of games I've played, is one of the greatest games of all time for me and will always stay strong in my mind for years to come.

The game's a freakin masterpiece…though a flawed masterpiece. It is definitely a unique experience, the likes of which I have not come across often. Getting into what's great (and stuff which is not so great):

    Pros:
*Story: An incredibly twisted, thought-provoking and moving story, which really starts to unravel itself in the most unique way through subsequent play-throughs. As it's a Yoko Taro game, expect a lot of dark moments.
*Combat: Fast-paced and super satisfying, plus it changes up with each character you play.
*Boss fights: This game has some of the most creative and crazy boss battles you will experience!
*Switches genres: Go from a third-person to side-scroller to bullet hell to mini-arcades to other game genres I didn't even know existed. But it is all seamless and addictive!
*Soundtrack: The music of the game is phenominal and really adds to the narrative and the big story moments.
*History and lore: At first, it might seem there isn't a lot to the open world, but as you progress and unravel the hystory and mysteries of this dystopian world, there are a great many surprises and easter eggs to discover.
*Uses the medium to its fullest: Nier Automata is a wholy unique experience, because it likely wouldn't work in any other medium other than as a video-game…that also a Yoko Taro game.

However, just as everything, the game isn't perfect and has few technical faults.
    Cons:
*The difficulty is broken: even while playing on normal, the game is at times incredibly easy and at times excruciatingly difficult.
*Jaggies: the graphics are incredibly jagged and takes some getting used to.
*Open world is not so open: there are a number of invisble walls (in places there shouldn't be) and gets to be a bit frustrating to navigate at times.
*Ranged attacks: the combat mechanics of the game is awesome, however, you can find yourself relying too much on the range attack function in situations, that it becomes more of a crutch that takes away from the awesome melee combat, especially in difficult boss battles.

All in all, Nier Automata is an incredibly unique and riveting experience, the likes of which will stay with you long after you have finished it.

This was a game that complete flew under the radar in 2017, as I did not hear anyone talk about the game at all. In fact, the only reason I bought this game was because it was on sale and I had seen that it got good reviews, but I was complete unsure of whether I would like the game or not. To say this game exceeded my expectations would be a massive understatement.

The second I began playing this game, I instantly loved it, as the game throws you into one of the most diverse and memorable tutorials in video game history. You begin by playing through a 2D shooter-like level, before then moving into a 3D hack-and-slash playstyle that feels so much better than I ever could have dreamed of it being. From there on out, I could not stop playing this game, as it succeeds so well in almost every aspect I can think of. As I said before, the gameplay and combat are fantastic, because not only does the game give you many different types of weapons to use (all of which work really well) but all of the actions go together so well, such as the pod's ability to use many different types of powers (lasers, shields, giant hammers, etc.) and the very responsive dodging. In addition, the soundtrack is top notch, and every single song throughout the entire game feels so atmospheric and sets the tone perfectly. I found myself listening to the soundtrack for weeks after finishing the game, and even now, I still listen to many of the songs. Other positive aspects of this game include epic boss fights, fun side quests, and interesting lore.

In terms of the game's story, the idea of robots ruling over a post-apocalyptic Earth may seem uninspired and unoriginal, but the formula and execution of the story are both done so well that it makes this one of the best stories in video game history. I won't go too in depth on the plot, but I will go over a rough summary: it involves an organization of android soldiers called "Yorha" that was created by humans as a last ditch effort to fight back against the robots on Earth and save humanity. The story centers around the androids "2B" and "9S" who complete many missions under the command of Yorha in order to exterminate the robots on Earth and help bring humanity back home. Throughout the course of the game, you will encounter numerous shocking plot twists, memorable characters, and unforgettable lore and dialogue. Now, the story does require multiple playthroughs in order to experience everything, but this is not a bad thing, as you will play as a different character during each playthrough and see the story from a different perspective each time. I won't spoil anything that occurs, but what I will say is that this will be a story you will never forget.

Unfortunately, even with the huge amount of great aspects that this game brings, it does have shortcomings. Firstly, there is very little reason to try and explore the world of this game, as you will rarely ever find anything spectacular. You might find one or two cool things, but otherwise it isn't worth your time to do a whole lot of exploring. Secondly, some of the bullet-shooter minigames you are forced to play are way too hard. In fact, I encountered several that I swear were almost completely impossible to beat unless you put the game on easy mode, which is always a sign of bad game design. Finally, the game should've have a few more interesting side quests than it does have. Some of them are indeed great, but a lot of them don't feel worth your time and effort.

All and all, Nier: Automata is an incredible game that falls just short of being a masterpiece. But regardless, this is an absolute must-have title for PS4 and PC gamers alike, and one you definitely will not forget.

With this new Platinum collaboration, it finally pays off. Nier Automata is an absolute masterclass game on every level that makes other games feel unfulfilling and small in scope. Every time you think you've figured it out, it changes and becomes larger, the stakes become higher, pulls the rug from under you, switches genres, perspectives, characters, mechanics, it doesn't stop. No one stops. This is the only game I've played that actually becomes continuously better the more you play it. Drawbacks are few and nitpicky. More enemy variety would be nice, some textures are low res, some side quests are dull, and god, I feel like such a douche even typing these out because they don't remotely matter. Probably the only drawback that matters is that the game gets a while to get going - the first route tells you nothing of the story and leaves you confused, forcing a second and third (and fourth and fifth and...) playthrough. Frontloading the story and craziness a bit more would probably have been a good idea, but like its protagonist, Nier Automata has its goods in the back end.

Bottom line: Nier Automata is absolute top tier. If you have a PS4 and don't get this game, I seriously have to ask - why the f___ did you even buy it?

I did not expect a "happy" ending due to the fact that this game is made by Yoko Taro but lo and behold, ending E gives a happy feel for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is a true masterpiece. People frequently label a game as "masterpiece" casually and make this word looks so cheap. But I can tell you that this game is a real masterpiece. I call it masterpiece do not mean that the game has no flaw at all. This game has some flaws but these flaws are not enough to reduce the score.

Nier:automata provides a completely unique experience to players. First, the unique story telling, it is still Yoko Taro style and it is better than the old games from him. The game could be divided into two section, the first half is about Adam and Eve and the second half is about the secret of human, machine life form and the YoRHa. The "Multiple Ending" of the game is in fact multiple story lines. It is so different from other game that only a few new features in ng+. The ng+ of this game is play as another character and hence you can look into the story from a different perspective. During the 2nd play-through, many ideas will came out and make you step into thinking. The 3rd is a new chapter after the first 2 ending.

The game leading you to think some sort of Existentialism questions. Both sides include in the war looks so difference but they have many similarity. Both of them are lost their purpose to exist. it is not difficult to find out that both of them are suffering from that and you can see how they try to escape from the pain.

The stories of the side quests are no bad, they make the world more solid. Also, some quests are about researching how human live. It is quite interesting because we seldom looking at human at this perspective.

Beside story, the different combat style of the two character make the game stay fresh. Although some people may not like the changes of gameplay.

The soundtrack and the use of these music is flawless. They use a tone changing technique to control the atmosphere of the game, which is an uncommon amazing approach.

The flaw of this game are some minor bugs, fps drop in some area or chapters and low difficulty when your level is too high. But these problem are not affecting the gaming experience so much.

    10/10 I can't give it a higher score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought I was getting crazy action, and goofy characters, but I left with gripping existentialism and devastating emotional blows. NieR: Automata centers around 3 characters in world set 10,000 years in the future where humans have seemingly retreated to the moon. Androids 2B, 9S, and later, A2, fight an onslaught of alien-made Machine Lifeforms as they unravel the mysteries of what happened to the world and the conspiracies behind them.
The first act spends its time posing the machines in general as very human-like; they try and emulate emotion, desire, fears, and are posed, overall, as creatures attacking from fear of being destroyed. This sews the seeds of existentialism, asking what life is for these machines, created with a purpose but ultimately separated from it. You experience the first act from the perspective of 2B, then 9S, and see their relationship from both sides.
The second act strikes hard, fast, and truly without mercy. All of the machines that were somewhat quirky in the first act, and all of your YoRHa (the Androids organization) comrades thriving full of personality, immediately become threats as each Android connected to their network is infected with a virus that turns them hostile, including 2B. The emotional culmination of 2B's journey until she hands over her torch to A2 brought tears to my eyes. You spend so much time with a character, only to see them die as you slowly become less capable of defending yourself.
As far as the story goes, I'd call it a work of art capable only through the medium of a video game. Yoko Taro chooses to keep you in control of your character through all but the most grand cutscenes, which keeps you used to feeling the master of each situation. In the second act, he wretches your own power away from you and puts you helpless as the Android network falls, and adds a cherry on top by removing a feature present in the first act: the ability to retrieve your fallen body. If you die in combat now, you face nothing but the Game Over screen, and the option to load a previous save. Switching between 9S and A2 on the fly achieves the same multi-character driven effect as any TV series or Anime (likely moreso the latter of the two), When you're ultimately asked to choose between the two of them, the choice is all the harder.
The story is helped along by an artful diversity of gameplay styles. No matter the character you control, you'll slip between a 3D beat-em-up, a 2D side scroller/shooter, and a Top-Down Twinstick shooter, even more so when you play as 9S whose hacking feature literally turns destroying machines into a twinstick shooter. Each of these changes to gameplay is a powerful choice. The most notable of this is in the final confrontation, when 9S hacks A2 4 times, you play through a hacking mini-game through a previously unseen arena, and as you progress, you slowly realize you're hacking straight into her pause menu, destroying it, and her, completely.
The soundtrack (I'm listening to it as I write this review) is perfect. The combination of large orchestra, with beautiful vocals in languages I couldn't place, matched with the fast paced changes and dynamic beats of battle, pairs so well with the tone and play of the game.
I couldn't possibly capture everything in this review, and I'm sure there are notes I've forgotten, but I'll sum up with this: The game is a work of art. It's not often I'm allowed to enjoy a game so thoroughly without my cynic's voice telling me about the bad parts. I have a tendency to exaggerate, but I will admit, from start to the end of the goddamn credits, this game had my undivided attention. If you have the opportunity to play this game, and you refuse, you're a fool.

I think Nier Automata don't worry about being as realistc as possible, but uses it advantages as a GAME qne nail it.

Heck, in previous games you need to collect EVERY weapon to proceed through story. There's probably a few "magazine reviewers" that beat his games and get true ending. This is why his previous games got such a low marks on metacritic — they are bad, but the story so AWESOME, that you falling in love with this series of Yoko Taro games.
And now, speaking about Nier:Automata — he's go even further. You getting a SECOND VOLUME of this game after you beat the game second time to get an ending B. The game itself is fun to play, has many deep stories and I was almost crying a few times (which is RARE to such a cold-hearted **** as I). Automata can give you a challenge if you're a hardcore gamer or make everything easy if you want to enjoy the story.
In my opinion this is the best game I've played in years. This game overshadowed previous games of PlatinumG and set a high bar for Yoko Taro — I can't even imaging how badass would DOD4 (drakengard 4) looks like in the future.
Easily 10 out of 10. Game of the year, hack'n'slash of the decade.

Almost everything in this game awesome, the story & plot, the musics, the action/battle, world setting and characters. The game that you must play to understand how good it is and get full experience in a good way.

This is the first impressions about NieR so far:

STORY: I did not play previous NieR series but I'm not feeling lost about story. And right through some hours in game, it's possible to guess that it will be really an emotional one, which I'm very excited. (10/10) GAMEPLAY: Some people define the genre as Open-World Hack&Slash JRPG, but, like others already said, it's more than that.

STORY: I did not play previous NieR series but I'm not feeling lost about story. And right through some hours in game, it's possible to guess that it will be really an emotional one, which I'm very excited. (10/10)

GAMEPLAY: Some people define the genre as Open-World Hack&Slash JRPG, but, like others already said, it's more than that. Actually, there is no definition in my opinion. Put Hack&Slash, JPRG, Open-World, "2D" Platforming, "2D/3D" Shooting, crazy (in a good way) puzzles and other stuffs together and you will have NieR: Automata Genre! Everything is well paced. A good balance between action and exploration. (10/10)

GRAPHIC: The scenario is beautiful, detailed and with smooth FPS movement on regular PS4. Well made design of the character and mechas. The Main Character 2B has smooth animation and the little touches that makes her so Sexy, Strong and Cool Android! (10/10)

MUSIC: At last but not least, the music, OMG! The music! So sublime and carefully crafted... I don't remember the last time I had this awesome sensation hearing a game music... So many latest games with almost no music at all, with an excuse to immerse the player into the game (e.a. MGSV PP...) makes me think that something is missing in the end... But it does not happen to NieR! I'm not even at middle of the game and heard a lot of different tracks, smoothly changing depending on areas or situations... Not only that, but the game turns on/off the vocal sound of the music depending on the situation, which I never heard in another game! Fantastic! (10/10)

    CONCLUSION: A MASTERPIECE! (10/10)

The combat in Automata is outstanding, the animations really help it be that way, this is probably one of the most perfectly animated games Ive seen. Im about 30 hours in on my second playthrough and Im still discovering new places, new things and it genuinely feels like a new experience itself. The story may look thin on the first, but I promise if you keep playing and learning, it gets very deep very quickly.

Graphics - 9/10 - Perfectly suited to the game. Suffers from some mild invisible-wall syndrome, but totally within reason. Beautiful, imaginative environments, and no framerate slow-down.
Sound - 10/10 - One of the best action OSTs of all time, in my personal opinion. The voice acting was believable and endearing, and the sound effects were seemless.
Gameplay - 10/10 - Smooth, crisp, engaging combat. The regularly changing perspectives and genre blending hold the players' attention well, creating a constantly diverse and exciting experience. The level-up system is simple yet provides incredible freedom, and each weapon class is unique enough that combat feels satisfyingly different with each possible combination.
Story - 10/10 - I don't usually play games for their stories, but I couldn't help myself with NieR: Automata. It was rife with intrigue, the characters were charismatic, the plot was deep and raised many appealing existential questions. NieR: Automata presents one of the best stories, and some of the best character interactions in a video game to-date.

Some may ask "Why are you hyping this game up so much?" The answer: It's been so damn long since I played a Triple A game of this calibre. It excites me that this game exists, because it means that other games of the same quality are possible. It gives me nostalgia, whilst feeling up-to-date, and presents a serious plot credibly, whilst maintaing a fantastic sense of humour during side-quests and throughout. In NieR: Automata, moving is fun, fighting is fun, levelling up is fun, questing is fun, fishing whilst listening to the OST and admiring the landscape is fun. It's just damn good fun all-round, and I can't find anything about that disappoints me.

    Buy it. Don't miss this one. It's a standard-setter.

Sound: Nothing much to say here...the voice acting is pure greatness and music is simply epic...and certainly lives up to the original Nier's OST.

Characters: Very deep and emotionally engaging characters...though you will not get everything on them on the first playthrough...They mostly shine in the main five endings routes.

Story: As expected from Yoko Taro...the story is pure insanity and beautifully bizarre and challenges your mind to the very end...again, multiple playthroughs are needed to grasp the whole story...and it's completely worth it.

Nier: Automata arrives today. If I end up liking it that'll mean it must be really good, 'cause it's pulling me away from Zelda and Horizon.

As a strongly biased reviewer who only finished 1/3 of the game, I was wondering how metacritic allows such an unprofessional reviewer to submit his comments and scores.

Music again is SO GOOD, combat is great and super fluid (dmc+bayonetta+jRPG in one). Story is engaging with twists. Exploration is rewarded. No stupid million markers on map. NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
