Nier: Automata is probably the smartest game of this generation. With philosophical themes such as existentialism transposed into artificial intelligence, it makes sure to challenge ideas that we already know from authors like Jean-Paul Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche or Franz Kafka.

This masterpiece made me think about the idea of a video game really is. Absolutely mind-blowing, the story and mechanics (mixing hack and slash, bullet hell and some kind of platforming) were the best surprise I could have expected in this (awesome) year (Zelda, Mario, Horizon, Persona...). Definitely a must-have.

I pondered over this for a year. This is the best game I've ever played. It beats Ocarina of time, it beats Shadow of the colossus, and it beats final fantasy 7. This game is art, it's melancholy yet uplifting, and above all its fun and exciting. It's crazy in the best way, it **** with your head, and even has a small amount of typical RPG element to keep the casual player entertained. II pondered over this for a year. I played the demo and knew I'd like it, but I didn't expect this level of adoration for it. This is the first game that made me tear up. The environments aren't amazing but they fit the vibe of the narrative. And Route B is not only necessary, but also so quick is can't even be considered a hindrance. This is a master work that will be remembered. This game has literally improved my outlook on life. If you play through Route C and then get Ending E and still don't think this is an exceptional game, I feel like you have no soul and no sense of appreciation for game design. This hit me right in every way. I don't think it'll ever be topped. You can crush Route A in 20 hours or so, Route B in probably another 6-7. And the finale of the game in 10 hours or so. It'd basically a solid 40-50 hour game depending on your exploration and side quests. Masterpiece, mic drop Expand

NieR: Automata is a niche game, a wonderful experience of action, emotions, addictive and with a great visual appeal!

It is not a game for everyone, it is focused on an adult audience that likes to enter into the story and understand the philosophy that the game will show.

A game worth considering if you want a deep experience full of details.

Secondly, the game isn't visually the best, and the FOV is at times frustratingly narrow/short. I can understand if some of the choices here were made to optimize performance, but the game does not actually *look* like a 2017 title. Not a big deal considering the aspects in the plus-column.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would have given this game a 10 even if the gameplay wasn't great, because I enjoy all of Yoko Taro's stories. The gameplay is pretty satisfying for most of the game however, and slightly underwhelming when playing as 9S. However the soundtrack, the songs, and the plot are great. It would be a bit better I think if they left some major plot points less ambiguous, but I guess that's Yoko Taro for you.
The bad thing is the ending section with the credits needs to be easier offline. I am pretty good at bullet hell games, but for the ps4 controller it was hard for me to navigate the last scene. I had to go onto multiplayer.

If we rate our games based on perfection, none will get 10/10. There is no such thing as a perfect game. However, what NieR: Automata offers you is a 10/10 experience.
The fast paced combat is developed by Platinum Games, the king of hack and slash. The gameplay is very action based, but it does have RPG elements. There is a deep customization for chips that players can carry to combat.

There is a deep customization for chips that players can carry to combat. 2B moves are thrilling and satisfying to look at, while 9S offers very interesting combat style that may not capture all players. The mix of game genre from the original NieR make it's way back fantastically. Overall, the combat is satisfying and smooth, but for replayability, one can only wish for a deeper, purchasable combo system.
While gameplay is not perfect, the game delivers its story and its characters better than any game recently, which is a driving force of the game that should be reckon with. Yoko Taro's characters and narrative is something to be respected and, in some cases, feared. NieR: Automata's version of Earth fits it's story perfectly. It's memorable cast of expressive and lovable characters is something to be appreciated. The story is tragic and deep with a(or many) message(s) for more mature audiences.
Of course, last but not least, it is a crime not to praise the amazing soundtrack written by Keichi Okabe.
In conclusion, NieR: Automata is a gem for gaming this year that absolutely no mature gamers should miss.

Back in 2016, I continually caught myself saying “games haven’t had a year this strong for a very, very long time.” I’m thankful to be eating these words a bit, because so far, 2017 has provided us with an even greater bounty of amazing experiences - some of which I now consider among my all-time favourites. We have games like Persona 5, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Night in the Woods, PUBG, among many more - and we're only halfway through the year! I think the most noteworthy trend among these great games which has stolen my heart has been the resurgence of fantastic, weird Japanese developers. There is no question in my mind that NieR: Automata is not only the weirdest, but also the most fantastic. Please, let me share with you just some of the reasons why NieR: Automata has taken its place as my favourite all-time game.

The combat system is simple, but fun, and engaging. Your character is adorned with a light attack, heavy attack, and a “pod” - your little robot buddy who can fire missiles/shoot bullets/pew-pew lasers at enemies, as well as provide other special moves. You have a massive selection of upgradeable weapons, and can upgrade those pods of yours too! Another interesting mechanic is the “chip” system, wherein you can upgrade your character’s hidden stats. You can add healing chips, so that you heal a percentage of your health back over time. Want a more active heal? Then you can get lifesteal stats. Want more critical hits? There’s a plugin for that. How about a sensor that reveals the location of all the hidden items onto your minimap? It has that too. There are far too many plugins to list here, but there are so many that - no matter your playstyle - you’ll find a combination which sits well with you.

Gameplay doesn’t just take place in the typical 3D character action game mold, however. There are sections which split into 2D platforming, top-down bullet hells, and a hacking minigame which ends up proving both difficult and a little frustrating down the line. Overall, the game’s willingness to change itself time and time again is one of the reasons I like it so much. Often you’ll find games that try to do something drastically different from its main style of play crash and burn because of it (think The Walking Dead season 1’s shooting sequences), but one of N:A’s strengths is that all of these systems work together to create a cohesive, engaging experience.

MONACA studio, as well as Keiichi Okabe knocked it twenty times beyond the park with their music. There are over 40 pieces of original music, each of which has alternate versions depending on the scenario you’re engaged with. (If you want to dive deeper into how this works, look up ‘layered soundtracks’) Not only are each of these pieces of music unique, strong as standalone music, and stylistically diverse; they each carry weight. They are emotional, and they perfectly convey what director Yoko Taro is conveying with his story. I feel that this game would not be half of the experience that it turned out to be were it not for such a spectacular soundtrack.

All of these positives being said, I’m not going to say N:A is perfect. There are several things that I felt mixed about. For example, the performance/framerate on my OG PS4 was often middling (sometimes downright bad, if there is lots of vegetation). I was also not in love with the format of a number of sidequests (a few too many fetch quests for my liking). I also ended up having difficulties due to the lack of autosave on a few occasions (though, to be fair, that is more on me than the game). Truth be told, when contrasted against all of the amazing parts of N:A, these criticisms barely detract from my overall feelings on the game. I was never pushed away from the game because of any of these issues.

This is the part where I should be gushing about NieR’s story, and its characters; but frankly, I’d be doing a disservice by simply running down a list of why I feel it is great. Let me put what little credibility I may have on the line by issuing a declarative statement: NieR: Automata is the most important video game I have ever played - a masterpiece. I had strong, emotional reactions to multiple parts of this game. Its storytelling flawlessly accomplishes what games like Spec Ops: The Line tried their best to do, and subverts every one of your expectations. It actively made me question my own ethics, morality, and perspectives. Not only did I feel emotional about the main plot and characters; there were also seemingly minor side characters who, when their full story was concluded, left me holding back tears. By the end of my 50-hour playthrough, I was so emotionally drained that I literally had to take a hot bath to calm my mind.

As I reflect upon my time with NieR: Automata, I have an enveloping sensation of nostalgia for my first time - longing to have all of those “first experiences” again.

Spontan habe ich mir das Spiel aus einer Laune heraus dann doch digital gezogen... und ich wurde keineswegs enttäuscht.

    __Gameplay:

FAtAl ErRor"§%%(/(... THiS CanNOT coNtiNUe..§$"%)=

    few negative points :
    - low frame rates on PS4, sometimes it's very low it's embarrassing for a game like this

And then I thought "Surely this game can't be getting all these 9s and 10s just for this?". Little did I know that the first playthrough was a mere prologue and that the REAL game starts on 2nd and 3rd playthroughs. After beating the game properly, I can say that all the 9s and 10s are well deserved. This game is a masterpiece. I'm giving it a 9 though, because it still has few flaws.

    Pros:

    - Great, deep and touching story
    - Badass design of main characters
    - Memorable main characters with expressive personalities
    - Amazing soundtrack
    - Smooth, responsive controls
    - Smooth, satisfying combat
    - Amazing English voice acting
    - Great atmosphere
    - Surprising, unusual narrative, plot twists and gameplay mechanics

    Cons:

    - The game forces you to tediously run around back and forth on the open world if you want to be doing side quests. This has caused me to give up on some side quests because I just couldn't be bothered to do all that long, boring running around.
    - While interesting design-wise and atmosphere-wise, the open world is empty and plain and it doesn't live up to 2017 open world games standards
    - Graphics are not quite up to 2017 standards as well. While the character models look ok, the rest of graphics are unimpressive and often feel like a budget or previous-gen game
    - Robots are too childish IMO. After seeing the first gigantic boss, I expected robots to look badass and menacing. When I saw that they look and act like childs toys, I was actually kinda disappointed and put off. But I got used to it eventually.

Overall, I can say that you will be thinking about this game for long days, weeks, months or maybe even years after finishing it. One of the best games of all time.

    Story: Yoko Taro/10

This is one of the game that move gaming forward in both industry and art sense. If TV is "show, don't tell", then this game is the example of "Do, don't show" and differentiate itself from a lot of games which had stories feel like a separated entity from gameplay. An example is "Last Of Us", it has awesome story, but if the gameplay can be switched off/changed without effecting how the story can be told (If Last Of Us is pure TV show, adventure game), then it's just implementing traditional TV knowledge into game, and didn't use the fact that it's 'game' to the full potential. This is not to say Last Of Us is a bad 'game'. You can think of this in this sense..."Radio's horror VS TV's horror", In TV the producer can make a 'silent screen' very terrifying by using image and light, but radio's horror cannot and must reply on sound and music. By 'evolving' from Radio era to TV era, creators will have new way to express their works, but it may take time until those 'way' turn into common knowledge, not just 'personal style/talent'.

This is like one of those title such as "Undertale",etc. Where you should go in blind and you should avoid spoiler like plague. And that make explaining how the story and gameplay support each other quite difficult.

And if this look edgy, it means Yoko Taro had successfully trolled you. On the surface it look like a edgy story at 1st/2nd new game+, but at the core of the game, it's talking about sci-fi philosophy thing such as (in generic example to avoid spoiler) "do robot have soul?", "If a ship/person is repair so much that none of the original part is left, is he still the same thing?", "Is real emotion possible without soul?, does that make it artificial?".
However, the game won't spoon feed or force feed you about how the game "THINK" about those topic, it will show you those 'stories', but won't judge you if you have difference idea. It's up to you to think deeper (AKA, after stories of those stories). This is another reason why I like Yoko Taro works', he treat his audience like a intellectual being who have their own minds and the ability to 'understand "THING" without needing the game to spoon fed them what's going on'.

And no, those Drakengard 3 edgy character and pee joke is gone (thank god).

    Gameplay: 8.5/10
It's Platinum Game, what did you expected?? If you had played other Platinum Game, it's quite similar. It's very satisfy, smooth, and pure joy.
However, this time a lot of mechanic such as "time slow when perfect dodge" , "push the movement analog at the enemy attack direction to make counter attack", etc. are now in the form of "CHIP UPGRADE" which you can slot in/out if you like/hate those system. (and maybe use generic RPG buff like +20 ATK chip instead".

*NOTE: some side quest give you special item which enable special mechanic? (I prefer to call them Quality of Life add-on, not important but make the game more entertaining)

But it's not without flaw (especially when NIER 1 did it better in some area).

IMO, the 'downgrade' system is the 'pod skill/magic'. In previous NIER, when you cast spell, time will slow down and you get a 'wheel ui' which contain all magic for you to select. After you select, the game will continue to slow down for you to choose target and cast the spell.
However, in AUTOMATA, player have to manually install 'pod system/magic' 1 at a time. (when you cast the skill, it will just trigger the install spell). This remove the flexibility to select the skill/magic that suit the situation best. Yes, players can change spell at any time, but doing so mean you have to pause the game and go so deep into UI that it's too troublesome to do.
Not to mention that now in AUTOMATA, spell/skill will auto cast in-front of player character, removing the manual aim, which may make combat faster, but it actually render spell almost useless cause it's very easy to miss (most skills' AOE are small, and just a bit of turning make can ruin your aim)

Another minor problem I have is that weapon upgrade didn't change their appearance like in Drakengard series or 1st NIER. (I suspect it's Square Enix work to sell those cosmetics as DLC).

Overall: Get it now. You won't regret it (if you make it to the ending E).

Absolutely awesome game. Since the second I set foot in Nier: Automata, I have felt this familiar feeling to a game series I've been playing for over 25+ years since I was pretty young. Where this game really shines is in it's combat. It is a hack n' slash game for sure, but it's a hack n slash game that rewards skill if you can believe that. Sure you can likely beat the entire game just by button mashing everything you come by and hoping for the best, but if you learn the combos for your weapons you can really do some awesome fighting moves.

I went into this game completely blind, with only the trailer on the store page giving me a short preview of what the game looks like. It IS a port, and there are a few issues here and there. If you do not have a decent rig, you might have some issues. KB/M is doable in the same way that KB/M is doable in a Souls' game, in that you can, but a controller is much better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My review resonates with most of the reviewers, so I won't go into the art, story, and music, which has already been covered.
I would like to bring the attention to the game's clever use of game mechanics as narrative through out the entire game.
A particular example would be the opening top down shooter segment, where firing of your weapons is initially restricted, even after one of your teammate has been shot down, because engagement has not be authorized. As it is the tutorial, of course, you were not allowed to do many things because it was a way to show you different buttons one at a time, but the game does not waste that opportunity to give you a sense of the military rigidity the characters must conform to, even in the face of danger and death.
The robotic reaction and adherence to the rule sets the tone for this game even within the first 30 secs of game play.
Obviously, there are much more to this game to deserve my rating of 10, but the intricacy and attention to details is what stood out to me the most.

This game is worth your time.

The most polished game made partially by Yoko Taro I've ever seen, and the only one I've played. I have a problem with games that have great story, but make you suffer through the gameplay, so I'm glad Platinum took the reigns partially while Yoko stayed in the back and chugged beer while occasionally also designing. Gameplay: Platinum gameplay.

Gameplay: Platinum gameplay. Played Bayonetta? Bam. Devil May Cry? (Not that DMC thingie) Bam. It's fluid, it has huge amount of options, and best of all, it complements the story.

Story: Convoluted but straightforward. Easy to see the twists, but very very hard to see the real ones.
You'll think you get Nier:Automata, and then Yoko will come back the back and pull the rug under you. Until today I hear multiple opinions from people who themselves have multiple opinions of what this game is trying to say. But, if you think you need to be a philosopher to get this, you're wrong. All you need to do is play the game.

Special: The game is action, it's bullet hell, and it's also 2D platforming? The story is very weird-japanese but actually has a lot to do with everyone. There's also no fetish shaming to be found, so go for it, young man!

Nier Automata is unique in the sense that it is a story and media that can only be presented as a video game. It wouldnt be able to express it's full message or themes in a movie or book. Nier is a game that will stick with you after you finish it, consuming your thoughts and even make you consider different philosophies for your real life. Most people (including myself) originally picked up Nier because it was another action game made by Platinum Games, and perhaps the fan service got to you as well (2B is beautiful). But if you stay for the entire journey, you will find something truly unique in today's gaming, and an unforgettable experience, that tries things that most games are afraid of.

This game would have higher ratings, and it makes sense if you dissect the actual gameplay, because there are flaws there, and I'm sure alot of critics never truly finished the game. However, if you truly love video games, and they are more than just simple play things, or mindless junk. You must do yourself the pleasure of experiencing one of the best games ever made.

Where they earlier games fell short a bit but gradually improved was gameplay, While the later games treated the played to a very fun and evolving ride Nier automata takes everything that worked in every other game and turns it up to 11. Thanks to the partnership with Platinum game Nier Automata and the amazing world and Story of Yoko Taro and the insanely addicting and complex gameplay of a Platinum Title. This was a game that complete flew under the radar in 2017, as I did not hear anyone talk about the game at all. In fact, the only reason I bought this game was because it was on sale and I had seen that it got good reviews, but I was complete unsure of whether I would like the game or not. To say this game exceeded my expectations would be a massive understatement.

The second I began playing this game, I instantly loved it, as the game throws you into one of the most diverse and memorable tutorials in video game history. You begin by playing through a 2D shooter-like level, before then moving into a 3D hack-and-slash playstyle that feels so much better than I ever could have dreamed of it being. From there on out, I could not stop playing this game, as it succeeds so well in almost every aspect I can think of. As I said before, the gameplay and combat are fantastic, because not only does the game give you many different types of weapons to use (all of which work really well) but all of the actions go together so well, such as the pod's ability to use many different types of powers (lasers, shields, giant hammers, etc.) and the very responsive dodging. In addition, the soundtrack is top notch, and every single song throughout the entire game feels so atmospheric and sets the tone perfectly. I found myself listening to the soundtrack for weeks after finishing the game, and even now, I still listen to many of the songs. Other positive aspects of this game include epic boss fights, fun side quests, and interesting lore.

In terms of the game's story, the idea of robots ruling over a post-apocalyptic Earth may seem uninspired and unoriginal, but the formula and execution of the story are both done so well that it makes this one of the best stories in video game history. I won't go too in depth on the plot, but I will go over a rough summary: it involves an organization of android soldiers called "Yorha" that was created by humans as a last ditch effort to fight back against the robots on Earth and save humanity. The story centers around the androids "2B" and "9S" who complete many missions under the command of Yorha in order to exterminate the robots on Earth and help bring humanity back home. Throughout the course of the game, you will encounter numerous shocking plot twists, memorable characters, and unforgettable lore and dialogue. Now, the story does require multiple playthroughs in order to experience everything, but this is not a bad thing, as you will play as a different character during each playthrough and see the story from a different perspective each time. I won't spoil anything that occurs, but what I will say is that this will be a story you will never forget.

Unfortunately, even with the huge amount of great aspects that this game brings, it does have shortcomings. Firstly, there is very little reason to try and explore the world of this game, as you will rarely ever find anything spectacular. You might find one or two cool things, but otherwise it isn't worth your time to do a whole lot of exploring. Secondly, some of the bullet-shooter minigames you are forced to play are way too hard. In fact, I encountered several that I swear were almost completely impossible to beat unless you put the game on easy mode, which is always a sign of bad game design. Finally, the game should've have a few more interesting side quests than it does have. Some of them are indeed great, but a lot of them don't feel worth your time and effort.

All and all, Nier: Automata is an incredible game that falls just short of being a masterpiece. But regardless, this is an absolute must-have title for PS4 and PC gamers alike, and one you definitely will not forget.

I've spent more than a year without buying any games whatsoever and decided to come back to this world with Nier: Automata. What an amazing choice I made... This game is what I always expect and never get in a videogame.

The graphics are beautiful in their own way. They don't have amazing textures or colors, but they work good enough in a world that life itself looks colorless, without a true meaning or purpose. The fighting animations are so beautiful that makes you just wanna smash the button to watch 2B destroying enemies.

The gameplay mechanics is probably the best Platinum Games has ever put the work in. So fluid, so simple and great.

The audio work is so, so amazing. From the voice acting to the soundtrack, it makes you feel deep into the world Nier presents to you. It makes you emotional, afraid, hopeful. Few times or maybe never have I been so passionate about the sounds of a game.

The story is almost perfect. Totally has that dark anime feel and it grabs you every single time there's a development in the story. It makes you wonder what is going on. You feel for every character. You empathize even for the things that try to kill you.

Now, the only thing that stops me from giving a 10 to this is the fact that is so complicated to go back and forth through the places at times. So many blocked roads and places you can't go through and you take some 10 minutes just to find how the hell do you go to the place you're supposed to.

Apart from that, Nier made me fall in love with videogames again. Thank you, Nier. Thank you, Platinum.

I know i rated it 10, and it deserves it, but that doesnt mean is a perfect game, it has pretty big flaws in its open world design, because the game itself finds troubles defining if it wants to be a onirical place such as Shadow of The Colossus or if it wants to be a place full of side quests and activities such as GTA V, (SPOILERS) im not sure if this has a -reason beyond- trying to impress the feeling of losing our identity after finding out our life purpose has been a lie just like 9S does, but id rather stay away from that discussion(END SPOILERS)
This game posses the most astonishing beautiful art direction of 2017 (asides of Breath of The Wild), including OST and characters.
The first playthrough and the first half of the second were fun, but thats it, felt a little bit rushed but it was ok
But then, the game suddenly stops acting like a videogame and starts a mature, intricated and amazing story, i dont really want to say any spoiler, but keep in mind that if you find boring or bad this game, is because you havent played the C Route.

I am now rewriting my review after playing through Nier: Automata again. I realized that I previously never finished a very special “true” ending (if you have done so, you will know what I am talking about). I also never fully appreciated the substance of the side quests. I am easily giving this game a 10/10 and now consider it to be one of my favorite games of all time. This game is not “perfect” from a technical standpoint and has some difficulty balancing issues, but I have been filled with intense emotions and have been reflecting on my life for days since the credits roll. I can’t think of a single game that has had this dramatic of an effect on me, and that says way more about Automata than its average graphics.

I will try to keep it short. First, the story is absolutely brilliant. What starts as a thrilling sci-fi/post-apocalyptic tale turns into a deep exploration of existential philosophy, the meaning of being alive in the face of mortality, and what happens when the foundation of your life’s purpose turns out to be a lie. This sounds bleak—and much of the game is, in a way—but the “true ending” left me feeling empowered and inspired; I won’t say any details, just go in blind and experience it for yourself. What I also appreciate about the story is that it is also simply enjoyable from a more superficial standpoint; it’s not so opaque or abstract that you can’t just have fun with it without thinking too hard. Otherwise, the music is phenomenal. So much has been said about this already, but I would say it is one of the best OSTs of any game, period. I can’t think of a single weak track. The gameplay is also extremely fun, with an excellent variety of mechanics to keep things interesting such as hack n’ slash, aerial dogfights, mech battles, hacking minigames, and other weird little surprises. The side quests can come off as fetch-quests at first, but I found that most of them explore an interesting philosophical concept or lore background that enriches the main story. The one issue I have is that the difference in difficulty between normal and hard is immense—I went from a cakewalk to 1-shot kills. It could have used some more balancing in this respect. The graphics are also not anything remarkable and can feel a bit drab at times, but the art style is really wonderful and unique, which makes up for it.

Nier Automata is the rare “non-corporate”-feeling game that doesn’t shove its ideas down your throat, but rather introduces you to philosophical questions and leaves it up to the gamer to draw their own conclusions. It manages to be both thoughtful and entertaining at the same time. I am so happy to see the positive response for this work of art and can’t wait to see more incredible things from Yoko Taro.

As unbelievable as it may sound, this game has a great story, gameplay, soundtrack and characters. As for the English dub, it may not be the best at times, but there’s some other times in which it’s just top notch! It starts off as a pretty simple game and evolves into peak fiction. Would recommend it to almost anyone!

Once you finish the first playthrough, you'll need to load from your save data to play the second playthrough and then the third playthrough to experience the whole game, and the payoff is definitely worth it!

The gameplay mechanics are incredible too, it constantly switches genres on-the-go, and it's full of surprises. My only complain is the hacking minigame, but other than that everything else is Top Tier.

Last but not least, the music is absolutely phenomenal, one of the best soundtracks ever, absolutely perfect for the game.

Nier: Automata is an exceptional action RPG developed by the action game veterans at Platinum Games. Combat is fast paced and fun, if not a bit on the mashy side, but the real star of the show is the engrossing and intelligent meta-narrative. Nier: Automata also welcomes repeat playthroughs with alternate scenarios and endings.

They say that they're bored, story isn't engaging. I think it's universal to any game that is not holding players by their hands explaining every single detail around them to build up the narrative.
Quite frankly, I'm still surprised people even consider putting this kind of argument in NieR: Automata reviews, as this game has its story unfolding right off the bat, throwing players immediately into their first mission.
Without spoilers, NieR:Automata story revolves around the question that both philosophers, although more sophisticated, and more down to earth folk think about - soul, consciousness, and possibility of both forming in inanimate objects, like androids, machines. It is question that player, through character, at some point will naturally start asking themselves throughout the course of the game. If you feel like you're not fit to answer such abstract questions, do not fret, because there are protagonists that are programmed to 'think' they're not fit to do either, and going through their story ultimately let you find the answer... the answer that director, Yoko Taro, thought would make a touching story.
I think the best part of both games in NieR series, are characters. I never thought I could be attached to videogame character in my life. In fact, before NieR I've never been attached to any protagonist of any videogame that i played. Whatever i felt during my playthrough was completely new feeling that i experienced.
Main point of NieR series is answering existential questions and feeling of compassion towards not only friendly characters, but also the ones we face.
Sadness also plays big role as, obviously, it's probably the best emotion to fill art with meaning and to put people in position to reflect on later. I think that's exactly what art is for, and NieR:Automata does it remarkably.

The dark visual beauty of Nier is a joy to explore and the phenomenal soundtrack is something I'll continue to listen to long after I'm done with the game. The one thing that was a drastic change was the combat and that was entirely for the better in my opinion. It is so fluid and entertaining that I never tired of battling enemies to level up even when doing the simplest of side quests or exploring the world.

Last, but certainly not least, is the incredible story that isn't truly or fully experienced unless you do three play-throughs of the game. While you can get a satisfying ending in one run, you cannot experience the true depth of the world and story itself until the third run concludes.. With 60+ hours as I completed the game on Ending 'E' (which I consider the true ending) I felt a sense of true awe and connection to my fellow Nier players.

I can firmly say this is the best game I have played in the last five years, and I have a feeling it may end up being one of the top ten games I ever play in my life. Very few games merit a perfect score from me, but this one is wholly deserving of it.

Nier: Automata is simply a great game. It's not just the story or the gameplay, rather almost every single aspect contributes to an enjoyable experience that manages to hit some emotional notes, prompt a bit of philosophizing, and delight the eyes and ears, all without overstaying its welcome.

On the surface, Automata is an open-world action-RPG, but it's perhaps more accurate to say that it's a languidly paced story-focused action game. The distinction might seem silly, but the player won't find a Rockstar-style open world brimming with possibilities. The world in Automata is much more measured and precise, made to fit a pre-existing narrative. But the developers managed to pull off the delicate balance between too much and too little to do. As a result Automata manages to reward exploration without demanding it in excess.

Aesthetically the game is a delight to behold, with particle effects that make the battles feel exciting and music that is sure to please. It's true that the range of locations is not as extensive as in other games, but what is there is always thematically appropriate. Much in the style of a Souls game, locations are memorable even when they're not impressive or richly detailed.

The game is of course Japanese and much in the vein of anime. If that's an immediate red flag for you, this game may not change your mind. However, Yoko Taro and Platinum Games have achieved something that feels at once unique, new, and familiar.

Do yourself a favor and play this game!

I can't describe the story or characters without spoiling everything, so let's just say both are very likeable, very interesting, and very tragic. The controls are fantastic and the gameplay is smooth, this is Platinum Games at their very best.

Automata's music is also absolutely fantastic and very catchy, I got my platinum trophy 2 weeks ago and haven't played the game since, but I'm still humming Beautiful Song to this day. It's a masterpiece and I wholeheartedly recommend you buy the soundtrack.

Sadly the same can't be said about the graphics - they're hideous and the game looks very, very bad on my 4K TV. No antialiasing whatsoever, jagged edges everywhere, low resolution textures, NPC models look like something from the PS2 era... It's really bad. Fortunately, the game itself is so good that I was more than happy to overlook this.

    - great replay value, multiple characters, different paths
    - likeable characters

As a Nier fan, I was in doubt. The first playthrough is a little lackluster, though what follows is an extremely thought provoking and interesting piece. There is no other game which has such subtle writing,, deep empathy with the supporting cast, and the pure weirdness that comes with automata. The first playthrough is a little lackluster, though what follows is an extremely thought provoking and interesting piece. There is no other game which has such subtle writing,, deep empathy with the supporting cast, and the pure weirdness that comes with automata. What is initially a fairly straightforward game becomes a master piece with each hour you play. Sure; the graphics are a little rough in places and enemy variety is a little thin. But this game is about way more then that; It is about seeing yourself in these characters as they live, die, and recreate. The creator wants you to know that existence is tangible and fraught, and the story bends at its knees to get the player to feel this anguish. It succeeds.

There are a few bugs here and there, mostly related to the frame rate. But still, this surpasses all of this generations games in terms of story and curiosity. My only personal bug is the possibility to "buy" trophies post game. Maybe the developers were taking the piss out of the current love for trophies / achievements, or making a dig at our own reasons for existence. Either way it took some of the joy out of the end game for me, since I enjoy that end game grind that i both love and hat with JRPGs

I have just finished the game, leaving behind many secondary missions and activities to do. Analyzing the title I can say that ...
Graphics: Su Ps4 behaves really well, never had a problem or a bug, stable frame rate, breathtaking views and spectacular animations.
Sound: amazing soundtrack and general sound perfectly performed.
History and gameplay: beautiful and fascinating

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
