I love this game, the combat is fast and smooth, the music is absolutely beautiful, the characters are likeable and entertaining, the environments are gorgeous and the story is bizarre and interesting.

Personally my game of the year so far.

If you played the first NieR, you won't need convincing as this time Square Enix let Platinium Games handle the development under Yoko Taro's direction which is a HUGE STEP for the franchise in terms of gameplay. It worked as NieR:Automata is Yoko Taro’s best game but it’s also now Platinium's best game without a doubt.

Story: Simply beautiful in many ways, if you go through all the majors endings it will just blow your mind and will keep getting surprised by all the details and clever things happening. No spoilers, no clues, just go for it. So many emotions inside a game who the main protagonist is not even human...

Characters: It was a doubt for me as we talking about androids/machines and some specifics design choices but I can easily says it’s one of the game's strongest points. They feel more believable and interesting than most humans in others games. I really enjoyed the antagonists as well.

Graphics: It works very well in the atmosphere of the game, stunning at times. I liked (loved for some) all locations in this game. 60fps all the time for those who care. Beautiful cutscenes.

Gameplay: A bit like the first NieR, the gameplay will switch smoothly from a shooter, small games to ARPG. It works really well, the fights are furious and explosive with a strong customization for your character. The open-world has a more limited scope which works well and avoid you the famous “fed-ex” subquests. The subquests are actually very intriguing, entertaining and sometime disturbing and they all work very well to serve the game’s universe. The way the game is made just creates a very strong replayability but you might still want to play it when you fully done.

Music: This is the strongest part of the game in my point. The soundtrack is stunning beyond words… One of the best ever. There is a very clever sound design in the game that will let you enjoy it even better.

Conclusion: This is one of the best games I ever played and it is currently the best game available on PS4 in my opinion. It offers so much in so many ways and will absorb you in its universe like nothing else. NieR:Automata is a gem and will offer you a truly unique experience unlike many others as it is a NEXT-GEN game not by its graphics but everything else. I will always remember some part of it, Glory To Mankind.

Though the game does have its faults, some bosses have one BS one-shot move and the camera has difficulty sometimes when transitioning. You will go back to old areas but luckily when you do there are decently drastic differences, some enemies get a little repetitive but right as you think you've seen everything there is something else to discover with unique mini-bosses to hidden areas. Amazing game with some small but persistent issues but defiantly worth the money and time. I would personally say for new players to try to hold criticism until the third part credits, I almost left after the first credits but I was happily mistaken with two other almost entirely different parts. This game is a must-have for people tired of mindless games that have come out recently. Expand

With that being said I must say I was very much impressed with this game. Nier Automata is a game that takes place in the distant future where you take the role of a character named 2b and fight through a seemingly endless wave of "mindless" robots to complete your mission.

The story in Nier Automata isn't one your likely to forget anytime soon as it plays out similarly to something straight out of an anime. While you may like anime this type or story telling leads to some cliche character personality and behavior making my personal experience a little less enjoyable. Even so throughout the whole game i never once felt bored of the characters, yes they maybe a little cliche but its handled very well through great voice acting and seemingly perfect soundtrack execution. Throughout my experience with the story I can say that Nier provides a great sense of direction and gives a peculiar sense of wonder as you hope to discover a deeper truth as to why the machines on earth are acting the way they do.

Game play feels very solid and smooth and gives a great sense of accomplishment when taking down a hard boss. Though combat is buttery smooth I feel like there too much to spam instead of having well timed dodges I found myself just kinda spamming the dodge button while being attacked by a boss or a handful of enemies. My problems with the combat is that even after 12+ hrs of game play i still find spam to be the most effective way to dodge and counter attack my enemies. Nier Automata's combat mechanics pulls straight from the books of a dark souls game, be it this game is more forgiving through your skill and upgrades, once you die you will lose them unless you go back to your body and retrieve your skill chips. This death system made me feel like I actually had something to lose if I died and provided me some great incentive to not just Rambo and die, but think about my next attack and if I should be saving my missile salvo for the next wave or use it now. Nier Automata's combat in game play I can say has given my the most fun I have had in gaming in awhile

Other things to note would be the performance of this game and how the PC port doesn't seem to run smoothly and needs more optimization

in conclusion I can confidently say that if you are not planing on picking Nier Automata up for your PC/console in the future that your are doing yourself a disservice

Every once in awhile a game comes along that has the potential to either significantly change you or gaming as an industry, or both. Nier: Automata is both.

Even more interesting is the brilliance of this game revealed in the contrast of the burdened by politics and poor development games like Mass Effect Andromeda. In that contrast, Nier shines even more brightly. I'd give it an 11 if I could.

This is the first impressions about NieR so far:

STORY: I did not play previous NieR series but I'm not feeling lost about story. And right through some hours in game, it's possible to guess that it will be really an emotional one, which I'm very excited. (10/10) GAMEPLAY: Some people define the genre as Open-World Hack&Slash JRPG, but, like others already said, it's more than that.

GAMEPLAY: Some people define the genre as Open-World Hack&Slash JRPG, but, like others already said, it's more than that. Actually, there is no definition in my opinion. Put Hack&Slash, JPRG, Open-World, "2D" Platforming, "2D/3D" Shooting, crazy (in a good way) puzzles and other stuffs together and you will have NieR: Automata Genre! Everything is well paced. A good balance between action and exploration. (10/10)

GRAPHIC: The scenario is beautiful, detailed and with smooth FPS movement on regular PS4. Well made design of the character and mechas. The Main Character 2B has smooth animation and the little touches that makes her so Sexy, Strong and Cool Android! (10/10)

MUSIC: At last but not least, the music, OMG! The music! So sublime and carefully crafted... I don't remember the last time I had this awesome sensation hearing a game music... So many latest games with almost no music at all, with an excuse to immerse the player into the game (e.a. MGSV PP...) makes me think that something is missing in the end... But it does not happen to NieR! I'm not even at middle of the game and heard a lot of different tracks, smoothly changing depending on areas or situations... Not only that, but the game turns on/off the vocal sound of the music depending on the situation, which I never heard in another game! Fantastic! (10/10)

    CONCLUSION: A MASTERPIECE! (10/10)

Whilst toying with multiple genres, and sub genres, related to hack'n'slash and top down/side scrolling shooters and general bullet hell games. Through changes in camera angles, and various segments from flight units to hacking... this game expands magnificently on a concept the original Nier touched upon.

Besides from it's diverse mechanics and styles of gameplay, the visuals play a vital role. Being absolutely stunning to the point of realism upon closer inspection, especially when it comes to it's character models. Square Enix have this unique ability to bring to life light and water effects upon characters, as seen in FFXV and SO5, as well as make clothing look weighted, and work as physically intend with movement, gravity and added weight with the inclusion of dirt and moisture. Though most of that can only be seen on 2B, it's still a minute detail that exemplifies Platinum Games' efforts with regards to Nier: Automata.

The soundtrack to this title itself is a standalone masterpiece, fitting perfectly with the emotion and narrative of the game and helps shape the atmosphere wonderfully. Always 'kicking' in when you least expect it and with it always being the icing on a very wonderfully crafted cake. So much so it's entirely memorable and itself is another key reason that this game will someday be remembered as a classic.

Now, story wise... this game is unique in the sense as it tells the story of an epic whilst using a variety of narrative styles that slowly unfold the game through the main story. The side quests, as well as hidden items and lore, expand upon the solid foundation to create a more wholesome world and breath life into characters. I found myself towards the end of the game remembering earlier side quests, and noting how they tied into the main themes of the game by the time I reached the ending, realizing how even some of the side quests had minor plot twists. Subliminally spilling the beans early on for you to only find out at the end... and ultimately realize what you've overlooked, and that's the true impact of the story. This always works due to the various playthroughs and narrative points of characters. Especially as there are instances where you (re)play the same part of the game, but in a different area or just from another character's perspective.

Now, for some down points to the game. I found that the world just wasn't big enough. And that a lot of the sidequests were barbarically uninspired and dull, though there were some easily amazing side quests that I won't be forgetting any time soon. That being said, I spent 20hrs+ of my 50 running around like a headless chicken - although a lot of the running around can be "sped up" through certain mechanics later in the game - it doesn't devoid the sense that with majority of the side quests being boring and/or pointless, they were trying to make use of a small map by adding in a lot of fluff. Too much, unfortunately. And I found this game doesn't have the replayability necessary to allow so much fluff, as well such a short map. Granted, there's plenty of content - just on finding items, enemy types, weapons, pods and programmes, etc. But even at the end game there wasn't anything to do except a bunch of menial side quests and 2 secret bosses. The second being overly difficult and unrewarding (no in-game reward, or secret item/weapon, barely any expanse upon the lore). Another issue was the hacking mechanic was used too much, that a small segment of the game utilized the hacking mechanic and was plainly difficult. Mainly because it was seemingly uninspired, as well as the fact I'm objectively bad at bullet hell games, as well as subjectively hating them. And that hacking "breaks" the game, even allowing you to insta-kill the 3rd most difficult enemy in the game, and make light work of the last 2 with ease.

Besides some crashing/stuttering issues on PS4, this game mostly ran perfectly. Only stuttering when trying to load large areas, though being fine with mass amounts of enemies and noise on-screen. Ultimately this game has etched itself on my emotions, scaring my fragile heart so as to never forget it. And overlooking some of it's flaws, as they're not game-breaking (maybe the hacking, let's be real), and that this game really is a modern classic that all should play, and that all should remember.

It's a really great game and worth a look at but is it worth $60, I'd say more $55 or $50 if you've never played the old Nier game.

Graphics, it's not bad but definitely not new gen graphics. it's not broken like some games that have been coming out lately. It looks like a late ps3 type game. Sound, I don't mind the music but it's not like Final Fantasy were I can sit around

Sound, I don't mind the music but it's not like Final Fantasy were I can sit around listening to just the music. I will say I do like the vocal song(I don't know the name) the 1 that plays in the demo.

Story, it's long winded and has 4 ending so you have to play through the game at least 3 times, once you beat it the 3rd time it unlocks chapter select so the 4th ending is just do the fight.
So the story is humanity has gone extinct androids are the new people fighting for humanity who they believe is still alive and they are fighting machines who came on alien ships, so basically its androids vs. robots.
You start as 2B who like a soldier android who are programed to fight robots her story line is pretty straight forward kill robots save humanity all the way up until the ending which then their is a twist, and it's not 'she turns on her people' she does have another purpose to exist.
After that play through you start over but now you play as 9S who is like a scout. he observes the enemy and hacks machines. In this play through you fight like 2B and hack items, but the ending in this 1 changes.
Now you're on the 3rd play through it's a split play, you play as 9S and A2. A2 is a rogue android you find in your earlier play through 's. The story on this play through is it's a little after the 2nd play though and 9S just wants to kill all machines while A2 starts that way but then changes once she finds a village of nice machines she changes her mind and just wants to kill some.

Gameplay, it's a hack n slash, leveling, bullet hell, 3rd person, side/overhead scroller. and shooter.
The main gameplay is shooter and hack n slash, it does have a hacking mini game throughout it but that's really only when your 9S.
leveling makes you a little stronger but what really boosts your ability to kill is plug-in chips.

Overall, its defiantly worth a play through

In other words, excepting fan-boys and trolls, we're all different and look for different things. But one can at least try and be objective (e.g. one may not 'like' Queen's music, but one cannot deny its technical accomplishment etc).

Nier A has decent graphics (not mind-blowing, but I imagine its core engine has been in development for some 'pre-pro' time) and truly excellent music (the most under-rated and least-commented-upon aspect of games, despite its importance). The almost postmodern mix of genres and 'fourth-wall-breaking' elements tells you this is a game that can operate on several levels (i delighted in the shoot-em-up and 2D scrolling sections, but that may be my age - and nostalgia).

Underpinning the game is an astonishingly complex and morally-questioning story (I don't understand those who say it is bland or by the numbers - it poses some very challenging philosophical questions, but I appreciate these may be missed by those who assume it is a 'kill the robot enemies' game). Much will depend on how you react to the climax of the first level 'proper' (no spoilers, but that will tell you whether this is your kind of game or whether you are better off with COD). The muitiple play-throughs are a clever twist on 'alternative perspective' or 'alternative storyline' films and books. It takes until the third (or more) play-through to really get this game (30-40 hours or so in, and it hits you).

As for 'hack and slash': yes, on easy (or maybe even normal, if you are a seasoned gamer) it can be pretty simplistic; but, on hard, you have to change your approach, and learn the complex combat mechanics and manage the RPG elements (which are not necessarily explained). I liken this to Witcher 3: play on easy, and you don't really have to worry about anything; play on the harder levels, and potions and preparations become paramount; or Uncharted: play on easy, and walk though every fight; play on hard or crushing, and battles become tactical stand-offs. But this is why games have difficulty levels!

I do agree in respect of the design-choice error in terms of the prologue (no save points for 30-40 minutes) and the invisible walls - which is why I arrived at 9/10.

But over 1 million copies sold (in the midst of a mass of triple-A releases), a critic score of almost 9, and a user score of almost 9, probably tells you something.

It might not be for you, but that does not necessarily justify 0/10 or 1/10 for a game that clearly has considerable technical merit and is trying to be more than your standard game.

I'd say try it (and, most importantly, give it time - in pop music terms it's 'a grower')

The game's a freakin masterpiece…though a flawed masterpiece. It is definitely a unique experience, the likes of which I have not come across often. Getting into what's great (and stuff which is not so great):

    Pros:
*Story: An incredibly twisted, thought-provoking and moving story, which really starts to unravel itself in the most unique way through subsequent play-throughs. As it's a Yoko Taro game, expect a lot of dark moments.
*Combat: Fast-paced and super satisfying, plus it changes up with each character you play.
*Boss fights: This game has some of the most creative and crazy boss battles you will experience!
*Switches genres: Go from a third-person to side-scroller to bullet hell to mini-arcades to other game genres I didn't even know existed. But it is all seamless and addictive!
*Soundtrack: The music of the game is phenominal and really adds to the narrative and the big story moments.
*History and lore: At first, it might seem there isn't a lot to the open world, but as you progress and unravel the hystory and mysteries of this dystopian world, there are a great many surprises and easter eggs to discover.
*Uses the medium to its fullest: Nier Automata is a wholy unique experience, because it likely wouldn't work in any other medium other than as a video-game…that also a Yoko Taro game.

However, just as everything, the game isn't perfect and has few technical faults.
    Cons:
*The difficulty is broken: even while playing on normal, the game is at times incredibly easy and at times excruciatingly difficult.
*Jaggies: the graphics are incredibly jagged and takes some getting used to.
*Open world is not so open: there are a number of invisble walls (in places there shouldn't be) and gets to be a bit frustrating to navigate at times.
*Ranged attacks: the combat mechanics of the game is awesome, however, you can find yourself relying too much on the range attack function in situations, that it becomes more of a crutch that takes away from the awesome melee combat, especially in difficult boss battles.

All in all, Nier Automata is an incredibly unique and riveting experience, the likes of which will stay with you long after you have finished it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought I was getting crazy action, and goofy characters, but I left with gripping existentialism and devastating emotional blows. NieR: Automata centers around 3 characters in world set 10,000 years in the future where humans have seemingly retreated to the moon. Androids 2B, 9S, and later, A2, fight an onslaught of alien-made Machine Lifeforms as they unravel the mysteries of what happened to the world and the conspiracies behind them.
The first act spends its time posing the machines in general as very human-like; they try and emulate emotion, desire, fears, and are posed, overall, as creatures attacking from fear of being destroyed. This sews the seeds of existentialism, asking what life is for these machines, created with a purpose but ultimately separated from it. You experience the first act from the perspective of 2B, then 9S, and see their relationship from both sides.
The second act strikes hard, fast, and truly without mercy. All of the machines that were somewhat quirky in the first act, and all of your YoRHa (the Androids organization) comrades thriving full of personality, immediately become threats as each Android connected to their network is infected with a virus that turns them hostile, including 2B. The emotional culmination of 2B's journey until she hands over her torch to A2 brought tears to my eyes. You spend so much time with a character, only to see them die as you slowly become less capable of defending yourself.
As far as the story goes, I'd call it a work of art capable only through the medium of a video game. Yoko Taro chooses to keep you in control of your character through all but the most grand cutscenes, which keeps you used to feeling the master of each situation. In the second act, he wretches your own power away from you and puts you helpless as the Android network falls, and adds a cherry on top by removing a feature present in the first act: the ability to retrieve your fallen body. If you die in combat now, you face nothing but the Game Over screen, and the option to load a previous save. Switching between 9S and A2 on the fly achieves the same multi-character driven effect as any TV series or Anime (likely moreso the latter of the two), When you're ultimately asked to choose between the two of them, the choice is all the harder.
The story is helped along by an artful diversity of gameplay styles. No matter the character you control, you'll slip between a 3D beat-em-up, a 2D side scroller/shooter, and a Top-Down Twinstick shooter, even more so when you play as 9S whose hacking feature literally turns destroying machines into a twinstick shooter. Each of these changes to gameplay is a powerful choice. The most notable of this is in the final confrontation, when 9S hacks A2 4 times, you play through a hacking mini-game through a previously unseen arena, and as you progress, you slowly realize you're hacking straight into her pause menu, destroying it, and her, completely.
The soundtrack (I'm listening to it as I write this review) is perfect. The combination of large orchestra, with beautiful vocals in languages I couldn't place, matched with the fast paced changes and dynamic beats of battle, pairs so well with the tone and play of the game.
I couldn't possibly capture everything in this review, and I'm sure there are notes I've forgotten, but I'll sum up with this: The game is a work of art. It's not often I'm allowed to enjoy a game so thoroughly without my cynic's voice telling me about the bad parts. I have a tendency to exaggerate, but I will admit, from start to the end of the goddamn credits, this game had my undivided attention. If you have the opportunity to play this game, and you refuse, you're a fool.

At first the story is great but in the third part playing through the game, there were the story pick up and get even better with unexpected plot holes. It's difflicult to rate Nier: Automata without spoiling it, so let me put it that way: It doesn't feel like a focustestet product that's developed to match a certain target audience. This game was made by people who don't give a **** about the player and who just wanted to make the thing they wanted. Depending on how you vibe with those people, you either enjoy Automata tremendously or not at all.

My 9/10 comes from a feeling i didn't had in a long time. It's most similiar to the feeling i had playing jrpgs as a child. Moving trough a foreign world in which everything could happen at any time. And that's worth quite a bit to me. For others, it might not worth be anything at all.

Only only problem I think is the huge difficulty jump between Normal and Hard. There is also Very Hard, which is set up so everything 1 shots you, but a lot of things 1 shot you on Hard too while the same hit from the same boss/mob on Normal will do barely 10-20% of your HP. I love difficult games, but I don't enjoy to get 1 shot especially when the punishment for death is so high. If I enjoyed gameplay where I got 1 shot I would of selected Very Hard. I wanted Hard difficulty without the possibility of getting 1 shot. I found Normal far too easy. I feel like Very Hard should be Hardcore, Hard should be Very Hard, and there should be another difficulty between Normal and Hard. Lastly it certainly suffers from a bit of open world syndrome in the form of tedious side quests. Having to trek back through previous areas and the like is simply not fun. When this game did quests right they are awesome, but you can't deny the filler quests that exist.
Other than those problems the game is amazing. Variety of gameplay types switching quickly between them, fluid combat with satisfying mechanics, a story that's interesting from start to end and as I mentioned, absolutely incredible music.

The main protagonists of the game are 2B, and android whose unique trait is being calm, 9S, an android whose unique trait is showing more emotions compared to other androids and the third protagonist in the game is A2, a prototype android for 2B's class and whose unique trait is being solitary and prefers to work alone. These 3 are the main core of the game and Yoko Taro's Nier story. All i can say is I love the unique way of storytelling made by the developers in game in which more and more of the story is revealed the more you actually tried to unlock the other endings and at the end. All i can say is it is tragic, but satisfactory and good. A score of 9/10.

Gameplay - Now this is where the second developer Platinum games forte. I can say it is one of their bests gameplay developed in their careers, it is better if not equal to Bayonetta's hack and slash gameplay and obviously better than the Revengeance gameplay. It's smooth and fast paced its awesome. In addition, other style of mini games was also included in game like the classic overhead shooter view, the 2-D side scroller gameplay, etc. Even though sometimes it becomes confusing because of how fast the game moves it is till great. Awesome job by Platinum Games. A score of 10/10 in this aspect.

Graphics - The animation, character movement and character design are all awesome. The fan favorite of Cosplayers is 2B's Goth outfit and we wont ever forget her gorgeous and game changing sexy android butt. As well as other character's design like the Yorha's commander and A2. However, my issue is the color of the environment, its bland and lifeless, although i could see why they did that since its apocalyptic, it is still becoming boring if all you see in the environment are dominated by the colors black, white and yellow. Another issue i had is the enemy designs, it is pretty generic and lazily done. Though some are cute looking, nothing really out of all made me impressed. Therefore, a score of 7/10 deserves this spot.

Sound - No need to say anything. GOTY when its comes to soundtrack and character voice. 10/10

    Average = 8.75

Platinum games has now redeemed themselve and is back in the game with the release of this awesome game and Yoko Taro's unique storytelling added that cherry on top. This game is a recomended buy to anyone who misses the fast paced hack and slash game genre. Its totally worth it,

Gameplay 8/10: Platinum games always bring high value gameplay and design and Nier automata is none the less although we have few animations and combos you can do and finishers are quite useless in the mid-late game. About the RPG elements we got the old classic level up and a stunning 128 slot (well 126 if you don't want to die) perk tree where u can fit as u can see fit for the battle or situation you have to face. And last but not least the upgrade mechanic of weapons that can be tedious as some point but it's nice and simple. The game is also quite challenging if you dont level up with some side quests (by the way they are fun and quite different between them) and it also have the insane difficulty fvor the most hardcore players, where you will die in a single hit.

SoundTrack 9,5/10: it's outstanding how a soundtrack with vocals can fit into an adventure game even if sometimes the soundtrack and overwhelm the character voices during a battle for example.

Story 10/10: nothing to say about the story, it's amazing, it's sad, it's bright, it's dark, it got everything a good script must have to be a mastrpiece. The only thing that i raccomand is to play Nier first cause there are tons and tons of references from the previous games, but still you can enjoy this game as a standalone.

Graphic and Design 8,5/1: Graphics are good, not amazing, but we have to tune down something to put up everything else, those "outdated" graphics can lead the PS4 to run this game at a stunning 60 FPS (with some major drops to 40 in the most intense battles) so its a good compromise to have this smooth gameplay. About the design we have a little issue with the world, it's not a full open world, some areas will unlock as you progress the story so there is no "oh s**t it's 20 levels above me, maybe i have to return this area later" istead the are a lot of closed doors or barricades made especially for you, but the game feels anyway good and full of thing to explore once you have everything unlocked (fast travel too).

Characters 9,5/10: And we are at the characters, what can i say, Yoko Taro already said to us "I really like girls", that's why the ENTIRE central command of the androids is filled with stunning beautiful female model of the Yorha Project (except for the Scanner type, more specific 9S in the game) so we dont have a large diversity friendly characters. About enemies there are something like 60-70, if not more, types of enemies and all feels very unique. The main protagonists have a great develop during the entire game, at some point you can easily predict what they are going to do in certain situations, this is what i call a good character design.

And that's it! i couldn't say more than this becouse even going 2 hours into the game we would have spoilers that compromise the first half of the game, so the best thing you could do now is go and grab this game!

They have solidified their ways of storytelling as art. And now we find ourselves on the cusp of another such revolution, where the stories of the mind can not longer be express by just a novel or movie, but through video games.

The story of Nier: Automata is one such example, this game is beautiful both visually and musically. ‎Keiichi Okabe and Keigo Hoashi have delivered a wondrous soundtrack that fuels the imaginative side of my brain and keeps me coming back for more. Nier: Automata tells a story with such emotion that it cannot be so easily conveyed through writing, you cannot describe the journey of 9S, 2B and A2 to your fiends and expect to garner the same reaction you would have had playing it. The game is just like that, you need to play it to truly understand.

This game is special, from the moment I first watched its trailer I knew it would be and so I bought a PS4 specifically for this game. The game play is fluid and fun with depth to explore as no 2 encounter need be alike, each character posses their own depth and style that you need to find out for yourself.

So I advise you to give this game a chance, sit down and enjoy the ride, I finished the game in around 45 hours playing through and trying to do everything, and I still didn't accomplish that so I expect it to take me longer to achieve that, and this doesn't include a second run on a harder difficulty to see how deeply this story really connected.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game had me wanting more, an not in the bad "there should have been more" way. The story had an ending that was an ending and I wanted more afterwards, but Yoko Taro can do that every time. This is the GOTY for me for sure because of all the things it did right.
The story is amazing and emotional.
The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard, better, even, than the original Nier.
The combat by Platinum Games is solid and (minor spoilers)
When you play as 9S the mini game of hacking is interesting.
There is more good but there were a couple of things that I didn't like as well.
The hacking gets a little repetitive by the end but that is forgivable.
Some lore of the story is in side quests. That is not a problem for me but for people who do not 100% the game it may be. Overall this is one of the easiest 10/10s I've given.

The hidden gem of 2017 is right here. The game no one unfortunately will play but should. This is one of the most engrossing stories I have played in a while. The soundtrack is incredible and each character is very unique. The game is surprisingly short for an RPG which I was fine with, but make sure to get all those endings.

The cast of characters, from the main ones down through support characters, are interesting and memorable, and even now there are so many moments between them that keep replaying in my mind. The game's somber but beautifully stylized environments are accompanied throughout by a beautiful musical score, composed with the sort of excellence in craft that the pieces themselves evoke a sense of place or enhance a mood. For me, Nier: Automata joins the company of a very select few games that I don't think I'll ever forget. Expand

I don't know where to start. The story is amazing. Ranging from silly to soul-crushing, this is a narrative masterpiece. The crisis of being a combat-only made android, thousands of years after your creators, the humans, left planet Earth, forbidden to feel emotions and made only to fight until your death is even more devastating than it sounds. The machines are now in ownership of Earth and it's the androids' job to retake their creators' land
I gotta admit, I wasn't instantly hooked. The first playthrough goes by pretty quickly and is badass, playing the action-oriented character and all. However, in the second playthrough, you play as the data collecting one of the duo and uncover all the mysteries of the first playthrough, realizing how geniously written both of them are. Don't even get me started on the third one and all of its canon endings. Point is, this is the best video game story I have ever experienced.

The gameplay? The gameplay is insanely fun. You can slice, stab and punch through enemies with a number of weapons while at the same time shooting barrage beams, missiles, and a laser, making insane combos each and every second of combat. The mobility is also amazing, with dodging dashing and jumping fluently, making it a joy to move around the map. Also, there are 3 kinds of bullet hell gameplay, each one of them being really fun.

The OST is amazing, with both beautiful and badass tracks, the level of emotion given to the game by the music is giant. I listen to the whole, almost 7 hour OST on a weekly basis, that's how fantastic it is.

The graphics are very good. The little framerate drops can be removed by simply disconnecting from the internet. The way it handles is graphics is very admirable, hardly ever dropping frames. The game just looks beautiful, no matter if you're in the vast desert, deep forest, ruins of a city from the human days or the digital world while hacking machines.

There's also tons of side activities, collectibles, and optional endings. While some of them were a pain to 100% (fishing alone took me around 20 hours total), I still had a blast 100%-ing the game and getting all the parody endings, it's really worth it.

In conclusion, everyone who can appreciate a genius story, dynamic gameplay and amazing music and atmosphere should play this. Game of the decade for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly made a Metacritic account just to review this title.

Welcome to the world of Nier, depressing, altruistic, monochromatic and most of all engrossing.

I was unfamiliar to Yoko Taro's Drakenguard series as well as Nier, but after playing this game I was enticed by the story. The writer made a fair point regarding a connected universe separated by vast amounts of time which allows new players to join into the story without knowledge of the previous games.

The color palette used in the game fits in thematically with a post-humanity earth, with Yoko Taro's distaste for humanity bleeding through the cracks, placing you in a proxy war against alien machines as an Automaton with human emotions in order to regain footing for humanity on Earth.

The alien machines have begun to display strange patterns and begin to mimic humanity and places you, the player, in the eyes of 3 different Automata with different ideals, and the ever changing prerogative of the machines made by humans evolves with the different playthroughs.

The sound is captivating, a second to none soundtrack with sound queues that warn you in combat of incoming enemy attacks in order for you to execute that perfect dodge to continue your robopocalypse.

The combat was refreshing, as you are placed in different perspectives at times, and the combat flows really well from 3D to 2D, showing the technical expertise of the programmers. A different and fresh approach to the hack and slash genre.

Overall the game is a must own title on the Playstation 4, and PC.

Luckily, in the very end, everything certainly comes together. Automata takes advantage of the nature of the media to have an impact where other mediums could not.

The gameplay is a huge improvement and genuinely very good. The marriage of styles is done smoothly. However, some of the bosses aren't up to Platinum's standards. In one or two areas, the camera switching messed me up as well, though they were generally done seamlessly. The RPG side is definitely there, more so than the original, as chips allow a surprising amount of versatility.

The soundtrack is distinct from the original NieR but every bit as good, possibly better overall. I'll be grabbing a copy of the OST the second it becomes available.

I have seen the title get a bit of flack for the level design and graphics. I think that the overall design looks and works well. The world has a washed out, ephemeral feeling that matches the tone of the game. I think it is absolutely lovely, and the world is generally fun to explore. (The desert a bit less so, but at least they have made traversal better there this time.)

After beating almost everything, I can safely say that I still want to go back for more. There will be larger, more polished games this year for sure, and Automata is not without its flaws, but I see it being my personal game of the year already, and a title I will think about for years to come.

It has everything you would expect from a top game: gameplay, action, customization, leveling, easy to play but hard to master, great pace and varied - really varied gameplay. And it topples it of with an awesome thought provoking plot (and sub-plot, and sub-sub-plots, or just random shower thoughts that hit you like a truck) and great replay value. That it changes game type often, from dual stick shooter to side scrolling, top view, 3D third person or hacking minigame is great to break the sameness of the plot, but it never overreaches to badly, so even when you dislike one of these game styles, you can be assured it will be over soon. If you like, you can seek them out in game.

It might not feature the best graphics around, but this is a game that proves that you don't need the best graphic fidelity to be awesome. Its art style fits, and by the time you are in the middle of a bullet hell having to smash 4 buttons at the same time to master the field, you won't even care about graphics - and let it be known that this is on purpose, since the game strives to deliver 60 FPS nonstop, and manages to do so most of the time.

That this game might not be considered the best game of 2017, of the best of our generation, is a testament to how much so many reviewers dislike the anime art style, or that it comes from a weird director from Japan. That despite that it is a huge success in both critics and sales, shows how good this actually is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. [Portion of original Full-Length Review]

One of the most intriguing aspects of gameplay at least stylistically stems from the change in perspective that litters some portions of the game. Typically you play in an over-the-shoulder third-person format, yet on occasion the game shifts to on the rails and top down perspectives for intense firefights utilizing your full android arsenal and party. While ultimately even the bullet-hell segments of the game boil down to eliminating your enemies and clearing the area in search of any interesting lore or story progression, I still found combat and the nice pace of breaking things up a suitable way to keep the monotony of most hack and slash titles to a minimum. The combat is solid enough that there honestly doesn’t need to be too much done with it that is flashy or gaudy and the enemy encounters and boss fights are memorable enough and frenetic and entertaining as is.

The few complaints that I would have do touch a bit on what repetition there is actually present within the game and that comes largely as a narrative and strategic thing. Your character will be afforded the opportunity to deck themselves out in the occasional rare bonus here and there, plugging in a special upgrade chip that boosts stats in certain areas and are hard to come by. Ultimately this adds some strategy to the game, however there isn’t much diversity outside of a health or damage boost and so it isn’t as interesting as it could be in terms of use. Another case I would like to make is that Automata falls heavily into the Dragon Age II camp of adventure titles- meaning there is plenty of lore and content there and it isn’t a bad game at all, however you’re likely to retread many of the same or all-too similar areas for the duration of the campaign and throughout your quests. Although encounters will be varied and narrative progression unhindered, it’s a sort of lazy game design flaw that bugs any and everyone.

The world and lore is entirely too intriguing for it to be limited in some of the ways it is- perhaps not literally as it is quite expansive, but in terms of scope and use as a character in and of itself. All things considered, if you played the previous installment then you’ll probably agree that Automata is certainly a leg up on the original in nearly every single way possible. The combat encounters are fun if not always diverse, the lore is handled quite well and manages to promote some intriguing plot lines, and the gameplay mechanics are quite solid and rarely offer any hiccups to halt the fluidity of the game. If you’re looking for an experience that has the ability to be a comprehensive one but doesn’t force you to explore it as deeply as you could, then Nier: Automata is for you.

Concept: Guide your android comrades in the eternal war against the machines. Quite literally, rage against the machine.

Graphics: While you will see ultimately a lot of the same, what is there is rendered quite well and there aren’t too many muddy textures involved.

Sound: The melancholy mood that permeates the soundtrack and the narrative itself lends to the experience overall and is a strong selling point.

Playability: While it has some quirky features and abrupt changes in perspective at times, the gameplay handles excellently and fluidly throughout your adventure.

Entertainment: There are often hidden depths to be found but the main draw lies in the fact that the experience is totally what you make of it and there are many interesting facets to the characters and the world and conflict themselves.

    Replay Value: Moderate.

    Overall Score: 8.5

One of the tracks in particular was so catchy I had to download it on my phone to listen to it. The soundtrack alone is enough to get this game and luckily it complements the action, story and characters.

The characters in this game are also likeable. Some took a while for me to warm up to but you do eventually become invested in their motives and story. This game I realised in the end talks about what it means to be human - the emotions we feel, what the meaning of our existence is and how the machines and androids in this game may not be as different to humans as they seem.

This is a must buy. I thought Breath of the Wild was my game of the year and it may still be, but now that Nier Automata has come, I'm still deciding which one takes that spot now.

NieR: Automata is stunning. It's a shining example of what games can and should be. It's always on the move, changing up and finding new ways to challenge or surprise you. It took me awhile to pick it up, but when I finally got my hands on it and played it, I couldn't have spent my money better.

It took me awhile to pick it up, but when I finally got my hands on it and played it, I couldn't have spent my money better.

I was originally turned off by the idea of another open world action game, but I'd say this is the best one out there right now. The world is beautiful, and actually really well design. The different sections of the map are all different biomes, but rather than just changing the style of the setting, they have drastic shifts in design (for example, the desert is empty and barren with lots of enemies, the forest has narrowing and winding paths in a sea of trees, and the ocean swallowed some of the nearby buildings, giving you some platforming sections).

Additionally, the story is surprisingly well done. I was worried that robots leading the main story would be a bad idea, but the way they help tell the narrative surpasses anything I expected. They have more emotional responses to things than most other games that sell themselves on their story. I won't spoil anything because I highly recommend that every goes out and experiences it for themselves.

It's also a game where having multiple endings isn't a lame way of cramming in variety for variety's sake. They actually matter to the full game, so much so that if you got one and stopped playing, you'll only have scratched the surface. I hate to be one of those people who tell you that you're not playing a game right by only getting one ending or doing it a certain way, but that's absolutely the case with NieR, more so than any other game.

The gameplay was another point of concern I had before the game's release. Given it's an RPG and from what I'd seen in early gameplay showings, I was worried it would have some confusing and unintuitive menus like Mass Effect Andromeda, and more recently, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. However, this was hardly a complaint, as you level up automatically, and choosing special skills and abilities and leveling up weapons are all super easy. But besides that, the gameplay is excellent. Combat handles well, the occasional platforming sections are really well done and don't happen too often, and every other different style of gameplay plays just as well as the others. This is showcased perfectly in the first 40 minutes, where it goes from being a top-down, twin-stick shooter, to a third person action game, to a 2D platformer, to a top-down platformer, then back to a third person action game, and each one transitions into the next as smooth as butter.

Overall, NieR is easily my favourite game of the year, which in a year with Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild is no small feat. This is also already up there with some of the best games I've ever played, and might just be the best. I'm really glad it didn't get criminally underrated like the first NieR did. 10/10

Besting my previous fav of 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn.

It's criminal that this game is rated below a 9, and I can only guess that's because its visual quality isn't on par with the aforementioned Horizon Zero dawn. Because the quality throughout every other aspect of the game sets an extremely high bar. I've told people this probably has one of the best, if not the best original sound tracks of any game I've ever played. And while I know that might sound a little over the top, I think it might be true. i've found myself going back to certain locations in the game, just to hear the local music play.

What I think I like most about this game though; it feels unique. The game play is rich and interesting and and the story does a great job of making you feel for the characters while not making you watch a ton of really long drawn out cutscenes. The voice acting is top notch as well. The little comments the characters 2b and 9s share with each other, while not long winded, are poignant and effective. And the sub-quests are thought provoking and interesting, while not distracting from the main overarching theme of the game.

I don't know what else to say... Do yourself a favor, play this game.

A true gem/masterpiece, gameplay, story, and especially the music.
There isn't really much to say except to try it yourself and trudge through to the end that it somewhat hides from you meaning you have to put in the effort so it's not a game to play casually.

I don't have much, if any experience with hack and slash games or even JRPGs for that matter. Final Fantasy 15 is probably the only JRPG game I have ever played, oh and Metal Gear Solid 5 (if you consider that a JRPG. I don't but I could see why someone would). I may not know what makes a hack and slash, or a jrpg game good but imo NieR Automata is VERY good. Nier Automata makes an attempt at putting almost every genre of game into 1 title. Bullet hell, side scrolling platformer, top down shooter, etc. To my surprise all of those things are done rather well. I can't say that the story is great yet because I feel like I need to play it a couple more times to really get it, there is still much I'm not sure about but what is important here is that I am COMPLETELY willing to play through a couple more times. That says something. With all the titles released recently my backlog seems to get bigger and bigger everyday but I am content with playing Nier exclusively for the time being. Another big plus for this game is the soundtrack. The music that plays with each scenario is sublime, and should be the industry standard for what kind of role music should play in video games. One gripe I have being new to this style of game is being overwhelmed by certain mechanics that have to do with leveling up your character. You are playing as an Android named 2B and your defense, and attack protocols are dependent on the "chips" (as in computer chips, or programs) you have and equip. I still don't think I could explain it but if you are new to this type of game I highly suggest you watch some youtube videos on leveling up 2B. Anyway, the game is great and worth the price. There is a lot of game here, probably around 35 hours I think. And although the open world isn't full of intricate details, it is a blast to explore. Expand

this was the first game after so much time where I literally craved the next bit of plot, I wanted to know what happened next, I FELT for the characters, very few games can do this after 30+ years of gaming...

It's a game you will never forget, it stays with you forever
you will never forget the first time you enter the Amusement Park, trust me..., it's the single point in the game were you think "for the first time, my $ are worth it"

    pros:
    - story: simply incredible, you really feel for each character and you think about the meaning of life a lot
    - characters: they're more human than most humans I personally know...
    - ost: one of the best ever in a game, always the right music for the right section of the game, just think about Amusement Park..
    - enemies: they're incredibly good from the design point of view and they fit the plot perfectly
    - multiple endings: staying true to its roots (Drakengard and Nier), you have to beat the game several times to unlock the whole story, but each time it feels like a new playthrough, don't rush it, and be sure to beat the game at least 3 times, it is worth it (you need to beat it 5 times for the whole plot)

    cons:
    - controls: an horrible mess, why japanese developers cannot design anymore a proper control scheme is a mistery to me
    - graphics: the engine feels outdated, yet sometimes it struggles on a PS 4 Pro, unacceptable in 2017, of course, this does not really matters, given the amazing game it is...
    - dlc: totally useless, does not add anything to the story (unless you want to beat the sh*t out of SquareEnix's CEO), please use this money for a Nier Remaster, at least...

now we just need to wait for a Nier Remaster, hopefully will come

The game is absolutely beautiful and artistic. I wrote this review because it whole heartily deserves a 10/10. I just finished the game with the “True Ending” with over 50hrs of play time. Be prepared to bring some tissue. This is NOT a perfect game, but it’s a masterpiece which I will later elaborate as to why and share some minor issues I had with it.

    Pros-

+The Story – 10/10- It’s about a story of elite special forces (YORHA) who are helping humanity from the tyrannical machines. You don’t know much about the character’s, background, and what exactly happened to humans? We are being told they fled to the moon for safety? The story will begin to unfold after the 2nd play through and that is why you have to play through till the end to uncover the truth. If you want the best ending, you need to play the 3rd time. I was frankly confused after it ended so abruptly on the first run. If you are able to get to the “True Ending” which I consider is route E, where it has the mini-game at the end of the credits- you have finally made it! But there are multiple endings if you are interested in those others. The story is deep and philosophically intriguing.

+The Music is by far the best I have ever heard in any video games- it is an absolute gem– 10/10! Classical and melodramatic tones really brighten up the environment, characters, and story. I even downloaded and purchased the soundtracks since I couldn’t get enough of it and I wanted to listen to these songs on my Iphone every day! The entire album is absolutely amazing! They work harmoniously with the game and is perfect for the battles, stages and ending.

+ Gameplay– 10/10 – It is primarily a hack and slash, but they added so many different and other variety of ways to play -such as side scroller, top down- airplane mode similar to Gradius, mini hacking games. While the battles can seem overwhelming at times and unfair because you forgot to save and to have to reload and start from where you last left off so don’t forget to save! They incorporated the different variety views/angles, side games, and etc, which shines through rather than just playing the hack & slash the entire game.

    Indifference-

*Graphics are ok but not great for PS4. I thought it could have been better with more livelier environments- like Horizon Zero Dawn. The CGI cut scenes are great, but some of the environments seem rather dull.

*The lack of variety of enemies and boss machines are a little sparse? I would have added some more mechanical beasts and or other different machines.

*Lack of equipment. They have variety of weapons. You use chips to incorporate to enhance some skills - defense, offense, support and etc. But where is the armor? -None, which I would have liked some. The variety of weapons are nice and upgrading level is fine, but what about adding chips to weapon or armor to add more customization to increase different stats?

*When you have 9s or 2B fighting alongside of you there should more customization rather than setting them as Balance, Aggressive, and etc. under game settings. I would have liked them to back up the main character for healing, or other various purposes.

    Cons:

-The difficulty level is very erratic. NOTE: Make sure to equip the Auto-item chip so it automatically heals you when your life is low when you are in a middle of battle. Enhancements on your character can do some real damage. Some hacking games can become almost impossible to clear because movement is very fragile and sensitive. If the hacking games become too difficult then adjust the difficulty to “easy” to have it automatic shoot and move – assuming you have the chips.

-Some minor bugs and frame rate issues on PS4 (not Pro) in certain areas of the game – Like weapons list doesn’t show the picture. Frame rate drops.

    Summary:
Overall, if you are looking for a profound story with beautiful music and unforgettable/memorable characters (2B, A2, 9S), this is a game not to miss! The game can be unforgiving without the proper save points and forcing you to restart again, but don’t let these frustrations overcome the beauty of the story, music and characters! If the hacking game becomes too challenging switch it up to easy and then switch it back up to normal/hard. Nier Automata's story is so fresh and enlightening. Frankly, it was emotionally draining and can make you sad at times and confused. But the real truth and reality can be unsettling. This game does not have the best graphics, some minor bugs, difficulty unbalanced, and improper save points, but this game simply has the most unforgettable story, music and characters, which makes it the BEST RPG GAME TODAY! Chrono Trigger & Persona 5 have been dethroned.

-The game has a semi open world map, but it has several things to do. Constantly you will find some random missions and the game itself has many side quests.

-The story is very good and I liked all the characters.

The only things that I should criticize in this game are the carelessness with small details. Like for example, when the protagonists are talking outside the cutscene their mouths do not move. It would also be nice if the npcs looked more alive, having a cycle of activities and rest, as it works in games like skyrim and the witcher.

However, this game is one of the best I've ever played, easily in my top10

NieR Automata: Beyond Gods Edition was a total shock to me with how much I enjoyed it. It takes a very solid experience for me to enjoy an RPG lately and NieR grabbed me quite well from the beginning and kept me entertained throughout. It's the type of game where I want to do everything that I possibly can just to make the experience longer - a type of game I rarely find nowadays. I went into NieR Autamata with no expectations other than the good gameplay that I usually find from Platinum Games, I went away floored with a near perfect action game.

NieR: Automata is not for everybody. In fact, the game looks to be aimed at the most refined fans of the medium by not caring about the regular gaming conventions, in the same way the works of David Lynch are perfect for the hardcore moviegoers.
