Neverending Nightmares is definitely an alternative game and a work of craftsmanship in its own right, as the comic-like drawings are highly idiosyncratic and personal even in comparison to other indie games.

It is a short but intense experience (you can easily beat it in two hours or less), where the best option is let oneself go and enjoy the 'ride'. As I say, the main charm of the game lies is in the artistic design of screens: with no more than three colours and imagination, Matt Gilgenbach's team manages to create an appealing pencil-drawn world of nightmare.

In combination with the evocative atmospheric music, Neverending Nightmares is beautiful and horrifying in equal measure. As the author claimed, the idea came from an obsessive-compulsive disorder he himself suffered. Even if it were not true -which I guess it really is-, the mere fact of evoking such a distressful sensation is interesting per se. Last but not least, it is a nice message for people suffering from this kind of problems.

The nature of the game’s narrative development means it has a healthy respect for the surreal, and while it’s a downbeat narrative, it’s a rewarding and valuable one.

Neverending Nightmares is an utterly compelling and haunting horror experience that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

Given Neverending Nightmare’s lack of closure, rather than feeling dead and done about it, it leaves us wondering about the game’s meaning. A cascade of “why” and “how” and multiple theories swirl around our heads like cartoon birds. It’s certainly not an experience I’ll be forgetting about too soon and one that people should play at some point in their lives.
