Hearing the broken bones, skulls and watching the most over the top fatalities done by some of the most iconic characters in gaming history again is an awesome feeling. Mortal Kombat X is finally here and it looks and plays better than ever.

The game starts of by introducing you to the new faction wars mode in which you will be given 5 factions to choose from. Lin Kuei, Black Dragon, Brother Hood of Shadows, Special Forces and White Lotus. I chose the White Lotus, A secret organization with powerful martial artists formed by Raiden and Shaolin. Faction wars is an online experience in which everything you, do whether it is in the single player or multiplayer will earn you faction points, rewards and will improve your leader board position.

The first thing you will notice is how beautiful the graphics are. The fighters themselves look impressive while small touches such as the sweat, blood and the way they move makes the fighting feel real.

The varied of levels are done with a lot of care. Everything around you is moving. Each of the 13 levels is like a theme of its own such as the Kuatan Jungle and the refugee camp in which you fight as caged refuges helplessly watch.

You can use your environments to your advantage such as throwing an innocent person at your opponent or using objects to jump to the other side. Getting to know each level will give you the advantage. Mortal Kombat X is filled with content. The single player includes the story mode, towers, single fight and test your luck mode.

Test your luck is one of the most entertaining challenge modes where 1 to 7 of the countless modifiers can be chosen such as dashing disabled, infinite timer, and lighting strike that will force you to use different strategies to beat your opponent. This mode is so exciting that I just came back for more because each fight felt different

The traditional towers are back; however, what I spent most of my time on was the living towers that are divided into 3 sub modes. Quick towers, is like the classic towers from previous Mortal Kombat games but with extra conditions that improve on the experience. These conditions are always updated, so each fight might have different conditions than the previous fight. Daily tower changes every 24 hours and offers new challenges and then there is the premier tower that offers the most challenging fights. I enjoyed playing the living tower mode because it added tons of reply value.

The Krypt mode makes a return. The more you fight the more koins you earn which allows you to unlock rewards and secrets.

When it comes down to the gameplay, Mortal Kombat X does a great job. I was impressed by how solid and deep the game mechanics are. You get to choose from 3 variations for each fighter. Each variation has different abilities and attacks. This helps in choosing the strategy you prefer depending on your opponent. For example, choosing Ninjutsu for Scorpion gives him deadly swords that he can use during battle.

You will fill up a super meter that is located on the bottom left every time you execute a normal attack or special moves on your opponent. The better you perform your combination the faster the bar will get filled. The first bar is the EX bar that allows you to do powerful moves when activated. Once the super meter is filled the X-ray becomes available. The X-ray is the strongest and most devastating move in the game.

Learning the different techniques during a fight is key because each move counts. Delaying your character to get up after a knockdown is a useful technique as it confuses your opponents timing.

There are also training rooms to do fatality practices and improve your skills. The controls are easy to pick up to perform all sorts of combinations and fatalities.

The story caught me by surprise it was like watching a big block buster that kept me entertained and wanting more the whole time.

The story spans 25 years following the last game and it is split into chapters that are filled with fights. Each chapter focuses on a single character. For example, chapter 1 focused on Johnny Cage, chapter 2 on Kotal Kahn and so on.

It was interesting to see how the story unfolded; you really get to learn more about the characters as you feel each one has a unique personality. The elders have lost power to Kotal Kahn and it is up to our heroes to take back control. During the journey, you will come across many characters from previous games and you will also be introduced to new ones as well.

The cut scenes are very good with many quick time events that allow you to interact with the game. The cut scenes were a bit long but I never felt it dragged on as they were entertaining. I was hoping that the main campaign would be longer as I completed it in only around 5 hours.

The roster features 25 old and new characters so far, each of them feels different with their own personalities. The new characters such as D’Vorah and Erron Black are great but my personal favorite was Ferra/Tor; 2 different characters but fight together during battle. Ferra is the small warrior who sits on the back of Torr, a beast who shows no mercy.

The fatalities are back and more blood and gory than ever. There is something special about performing a fatality, it just feels satisfying. There is a new easy fatality feature that allows players to do a fatality much easier.

With good soundtracks, and excellent gameplay Mortal Kombat X reminds us of what made the series so captivating in the first place. Whether you are a veteran or a new comer, Mortal Kombat X will give you a great time.

There's no pit fatalities or stage fatalities on this one which is a little disappointing until you realise each character has two fatalities, 5 brutalities and 5 faction kills when you've levelled up enough. There's never been so many ways to finish someone in a mortal kombat. Some people have moaned that there are a lack of stages and I would agree to some extent. I always found myself choosing the same stages on the last game anyway I had my faves and I stuck to them. Dead woods and lin kuei temple are my faves this time around. Some won't be happy that their favourite characters didn't make the cut from the last game and I sympathise with those people. Cyrax. .. sektor. .. smoke.... sindel. ..kabal to name a few worthy fighters. The new fighters are a good mix..... maybe one too many sibling where the cages and briggs family are concerned but they're all likeable enough once you've played the story mode and understand why they're involved. I've been waiting for this game for months and I've actually made my hands hurt from playing solid for the last two days. The krypt is also good fun unlocking lots of goodies and extra alternate costumes. There's been a bit of bad publicity online regarding the purchase of easy fatalities etc..... I just think it's a bit silly but not knocking the game for that as they're something I would never even dream of buying. Honestly. ...I bought this and the kombat pack and goro and it's the most expensive game I've ever bought at £70 and I think it's going to be money well spent. If you like fighting games and don't mind watching a lot of gore then you should give this a try. I love it. Expand

My only gripe with this game is how the combo layout is a bit harder to pull off compare to MK9 so I played as less of the characters because everyone do play differently, also unlocking the costumes is not that fair some I have to play it online to get them but I dont want to pay to play it online so Im still stuck with a few costumes unlockable.

My last gripe is unlocking everything in the Krypt can take you forever. I remember how quickly I unlocked everything in MK9 and got more coins but NetherRealm wants you to pay them the $19.99 to unlock everyhing but anyways I dont really care about unlocking everything.

I did got the Kombat Pack DLC so I am a bit pissed that every 4 characters I have to wait for a while for each of them to be release but they should of told the fans that not all 4 characters isn't ready yet.

Overall the Story mode has been approved even in one sitting, I beat it. That got me very shocked that I beat the story mode in less then 4 hours in Medium mode. I do like a lot of the backstory for each of the new characters. I wish their was more about Erron Black which hes my favorite so far.

Every bone crunch and disembowelment sounds and goods great thanks to 60FPS and a great audio. The 60 FPS may not seem like a bit deal but it helps extremely with hit boxes and how smooth the characters control. Most the characters are evenly matched with a few that stand out that could use some changes. Online matches sadly usually consist of Schorpion fights but if you know your character enough you can put up a fight.
The amount of characters they give you to choose from is quite nice as well, with the attention of quite a few new fighters and more in DLC on the way. The new characters breath some fresh air into the fights and have very original designs and fighting styles.
Story mode has a great plot to it and has you play through with multiple characters so you get to give them all a bit of a try. Now that's fun for the first bit but once you get to the more difficult fights and are stuck playing a character you may dislike or have trouble playing the game becomes extremely frustrating and not to fun. At least the towers from previous games are back so you can challenge yourself with your favorite character. The ability to unlock new Fatalities/Costumes/X-rays is also a great idea and kept me going back to spend my "Koins" on new stuff.
If you were a fan of the old MK games or have a next gen gen system and looking to beat up your friends, MKX is a great and fun way to do so.

But I do have one issue... Before I say my problem I'm just going to speak for myself. About a decade ago who remembers playing these types of games, who remembers trying to get to the final stage in the towers to unlock characters? What happen to does days? Why does everything need to be about money now.. If this game was created a decade ago, they would've done secret levels to unlock Jason, or Tanya, even predator. You'd have to work for them, not just simply buy them. But instead we have to buy them, companies just make more and more bundles, dlc, etc, for money. If they really thought about the players they would do things like before, where we would have to unlock the character and fight for them.

But anyway other than that, Great game!!

It wont take long to explain why Mortal Kombat X is the best executed title in the franchise. What stands out the most here is attention to detail. From each character having specific dialogue catered to their opponent (mirror match introductions are often hilarious), to the insane level of gore that gamer's have come to expect from the franchise, its all represented in style and a certain fluidity that is lost on many developers. PACKED with extras and unlockables (the most I have seen in ANY game of recent memory) as well as several variations on traditional Kombat game styles. KOTH and 5v5's are a couple of examples, with little touches like stage effects (low gravity, minimized arena, random ice missiles, etc...) if you wanted to play 100 matches between two characters you could with no two matches having the same win conditions/arena conditions. Add in an extra level of customization via character sub-sets (all 24 standard characters have 3 different styles a piece) and what you get is probably the most polished and balanced fighting game in years.

9/10, pick it up if you are or have ever been a fan of the series. I lost interest a loooooong time ago, and NetherRealms has rekindled that flame with a solid "Injustice"-esque entry for current gen.

For instance, I frequently see people saying that the story doesn't make sense. That'd dumb. of course it does. It's not even complicated. It just features a lot of characters that the game doesn't introduce. It assumes you to already be familiar with all the characters. Is that a reasonable assumption for the 10th game in a series to do? You be the judge, but that's a nitpick.

I love playing as Mileena, Kitana, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and even Kano who is a character I never enjoyed in any MK game. The variations keep things fresh and add more decision making.

Story mode is great, delivering the best story so far. A shame that some characters were locked out of arcade mode and not playable even though there are clearly character models and move sets for them.

Combat is both hit and miss. On the one hand it is a very polished combat system with significant improvements from MK9. On the other hand I did not like the 3 different variations system. It would have been nice to have a base character with all moves or the ability to create your own variation with the all the moves and look you want.

DLC character packs were great. A shame there weren't more. The crypt this time round was awesome and a joy to explore.

I was a bit disappointed not to see some characters. Had hoped to see Skarlet again. I had also hoped for Nitara and Sareena (was there in a brief cameo, but I had hoped she would be playable.)

    Overall:
MKX is a worthy continuation of the franchise adding enough to still feel fresh, yet it doesn't add enough to have the same kind of impact the last game. Still, tons of fun.

    Note to developer:
One thing I do find odd, especially in this day and age, why MK franchise doesn't go completely mature. Where is the sex? Tons of blood, gore and bad language, yet you're telling me that naked slave girl/guy in background is out of place. I'm not saying make it something smutty, more like keep it real and make character motivations and actions (both conscious and subconscious) true. eg. Sonya would eye up Johnny any time his back is (more likely she wouldn't even realise she's doing it.) Mileena wearing something see-through would also be true to character. Kano would have a filthy mouth.
To be clear I'm not singling out women for this. The same should apply to male characters too.

Also, for MK XI if you are going to have guest characters, why not the movie horror legends like Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Wolfman, etc. (would fit as they are planning on reboots for all of the in the near future.) Personally I would love to see Lady Death or Evil Ernie.

MKX has become a great game, but unfortunately got released with very annoying bugs. Without those it would be easily worth an 8.5/10.

In addition to the story, players can also enjoy offline and online tower challenges.
Unfortunately there are a couple of game breaking bugs in that section: tower scores don't properly save: your highest score automatically resets to the last score you've achieved. Leaderboards are not working properly: Scores never get uploaded.
The 'koins' you earn during matches can be spent in the 'Krypt' to unlock brutalities, second fatalities and art. Unfortunately also here, sometimes previously unlocked items disappear from your catalog.

+ Best fighting experience in a game to date
    + Great graphics
+ Wide range of fatalities, brutalities and faction kills

    - Some game breaking bugs. Most notably the tower high scores that are not properly saved
    - Disfunctional leaderboards
    - Faction servers are more offline than online
    - Living Towers are more 'not available' than available.

I spent over 20 hours playing the first week it was released and I have a wife and three kids =-0. The reason I only gave it an 8/10 is because it is like a mirror image of its predecessor. The story and some slight mechanics tweaks are the only differences and lets be honest not many people buy Mortal Kombat for the story mode. That makes the differences practically invisible and even many of the X-rays are so similar they started out boring because I have seen them many times in the previous title.

Now that I've said that I'll explain why I love Mortal Kombat X. The clans, living towers, custom multiplayer matches, and profile bonuses based on your portrait, emblem, etc. Ranking up and supporting your clan keeps me playing for hours feeling like their is a point. The steady changing of the living towers for the hourly, daily, and weekly towers keep it fresh and provide players with a reason to keep playing months after release. The new match conditions are fun and entertaining with friends and provide hours of fun matchmaking that feels fresh for a long time because of the wide variety of match conditions that can be set. Overall the game could have tried harder to be more original but still offers enough new content to be a great title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Do you want a good fighting game? Then Mortal Kombat X is here to give you one.
Mortal Kombat X does so many things great like:
-The Graphics are great for the 8th generation of gaming and fatalities look awesome especially Kenshi's fatality. Also the levels look awesome
-The Controls show greatness in showing that when you press a button or preform a special move it will happen.
    - Instead of the levels being there to just look pretty you can interact with items in that level
-Fighters now have three variations but sometimes this can be a downside(Read deeper for details)
    - Training rooms exist so you can sharpen up your skills against future opponents with any character of your choosing
    - Story mode is Pretty good but has a few disappointments(Again read deeper for details)

    - Lastly, There's plenty of content in this game leaving you entertained for hours a day.
Sadly every game has its flaws and this is no exception.
-Story mode leaves many things unexplained like for example: why did Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade break up? and also underwhelms that giant beast known as Ferra/Torr.
-The variations have only one flaw like only one variation for Raiden has his teleport.
    -Easy Fatalities are just...dumb.
-Faction mode has some dead factions like the special forces faction which should be fixed.
-"Unlock everything in the Krypt" Shouldn't exist like...really.
    - WHATS WITH ALL THE DLC? are our future games just DLC hubs?
-(This is actually a thing AngryJoe addressed)Goro is actually on the disc you buy in the game(Which should make him playable) but you still need to pay five whole dollars for it....GG.
    - Lastly, I have to play a HORRIBLE pay to win version of the game on mobile to unlock stuff? Ultra fail.
But the game still is great even with these body shots. It delivers what it needs and executes it very well.
8/10 they put good effort into this but parts of it feel just...poor.

Mortal Combat is like a cult classic and it is relatively safe to say the fans of this brand will love this new addition to the series. MKX gives u all the great characters along with the gore and bone crushing moves and the aftermath theatrics included. I think they re connected with the core buyers, by giving them all that the MK brand has to offer. I rated a 6 due to the lack of storyline and character development after all you will eventually become board with the kicking and punching cliché after awhile. Adaptation of a storyline is what make games like DBZ titles fun minus the KARATE feel me....I think if your a new or former MK enthusiast you will enjoy this title. Also MK is the originator of the bone crushing and gore aspect presented in fighting games today its hard to compare them to the others out there Midway has a hit on there hands for generations to come. For the price its really a steal for this level of entertainment visually the game is superb. Expand

This game is jusyt so much fun, that is playing with a friend. It has many great characters with each having there own skills (I use Kitana and Scorpion). Every character is different, and theres tons of stuff you can unlock in the game like costumes, fatalities, brutalities, and more. The story mode sucks, and the game gets boring your your playing alone, but with a friend, its so much fun

Gameplay- Brilliant but can get repetitive unless you play competitively.
    Graphics- Really Good
Story- Not bad but could have been better and longer.
Worth the money- It has plenty of content for the fans, but for first time begginers, who mainly want action will feel empty. So yes for fans and beginners, wait for it to be cheaper.

That's not to say there isn't gore, there's buckets of that, but this time it's accompanied by a well developed fighter that plays as smooth as sub zero's ice puddles. The character models and level design are all labors of love with incredible detail, and extras in this game litter the "krypt," an underground treasure hunt filled with campy jump scares.
    Some key positives:

Game play is thrilling, smooth, and fatalities/brutalities are disturbingly satisfying.

Each character has three different modes, giving the game even more depth in choice, and allowing for a learning curve that both invites novices and rewards experts.

Voice acting is also superb, taking the immersion to another level.

Old favorites (Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, etc) collide with new, well conceived challengers. There are awesome outside cameos from The Predator and Jason Vorhees, also.

Online play is smooth and engaging, the different modes give you great variety.

    Negatives:

the one GLARING negative, which cannot be overlooked, is the price gouging. To get the complete game (Tremor, Tanya, Predator, Jason) you'll be shelling out $80 or more (you may have to also pay for Goro, depending on when/where you got the game.) It looks like there are other characters on their way as well, meaning the total cost of this game could exceed $100. While I'm all for paying for good games, this just feels like pick-pocketing. It's really a shame that such insidious business practices sully an otherwise great game. I'd give it a 10/10, otherwise.

Netherrealm also did a great job with the new roster of characters. I can’t think of a new character that I dislike and I absolutely love some of the newer characters like Erron Black. The fatalities in this game are great, but I was surprised to learn that I actually like the brutalities much more. I loved the addition of brutalities, but it does suck that they got rid of babalities and other fun extras like that. The krypt in this game is better than it has ever been before. You can actually explore the entire krypt and visit new locations. From now on, I expect Netherrealm to keep going all out with the krypt. You wouldn't think that a developer would want to make spending your in-game credits fun. Mortal Kombat X has some flaws with it’s story, but fans of this franchise should definitely pick this game up. Expand

In the fall of 1992 I was in high school . On the south side of Chicago there was a bowling alley where my friends and I would go after school . We'd go play pool bowl and talk to girls . The bowling alley also had a tiny arcade . It was nothing special . Let's put it this way they had pole position . Older gamers will surely appreciate that last bit ,

One day while bowling we noticed a line emanating from that tiny "arcade " . We wandered over for a look upon getting getting closer we were greeted with the sounds of martial arts combat . It called to us like sirens to sailors . The yells the sounds of punches landing and scorpions iconic Get Over Here ! We were amazed . The special moves, combat ways for people to juggle . The fighters looked real !! ( at least to us ) . The blood and then we saw the fatalities .

We were hooked older people and teenagers like us lined up to compete against each other . Winner stayed loser walked . It was an amazing arcade game and it became a hit . A few years later the Chicago company Midway released MK2 . This time the arcade cabinet was in a video store . Some of you are saying what the hell is a video store ?. It was closer to our school than the alley so everyday after school we'd go .

Pumping in quarters and spending hours trying to master the game . We wanted to find all the secrets , learn all the moves and perform all the fatalities . In those days the net was in its infancy so there were tons of rumors surrounding this game . A little later a home port was released . Ironically the same video store that took our quarters declined to carry the console version . I wasn't supposed to play these games but I did anyway and got caught . Shortly after my love affair with MK ended and I was on my way to becoming that old guy who yells at you to get off his lawn .

Flash forward 20 something years and once again I'm answering MK's beckoning call . Let's start with the story . The story is of course ridiculous and the dialogue is campy . In a good way ( think Big Trouble In Little China ) . The story shifts between time periods and locations is enjoyable . Many of the Kombatants are here , though some fan favorites are absent . There is lots of fan service here and it shows . Let's face it most fighters have no story so being a MK fan I was happy .

Other modes are present here as well . Like the challenge towers . These can either be played online or off and either way offer a lot of fun . Some towers are updated daily or evenly with rewards for completing them . Within Mortal Kombat x is a mini game based on factions . You are asked to chose one and everything you do in game contributes to your faction . Earning you rewards like faction fatalities and so on . Players across all platforms including mobile contribute to factions . Speaking of mobile app which is only available on iOS devices at the moment . Nets you rewards like costumes etc . Plus it's free .

Online modes also feature towers . As well as 1 on 1 vs and team matches . As well as king of the hill which has that classic arcade community feel I spoke of earlier . There's simply tons of content here . From costumes to finishers to combos . The in game kurrency is used in the crypt . Unlocking things like fatalities concept art brutalities and so on .

Some may be disappointed their favorite fighters are missing . Keep faith Its MK . This game brings back that classic nostalgia and feel for me in droves . Mortal Kombat pretty much solidified me to being a gamer and though I have strayed away I returned . Should you return to the arena of Mortal Kombat ?. I do not know but if you do you'll see me online with a big smile on my face and I'm sure one will be on yours as well . The hometown boys at Netherrealm have an absolute gem of a fighter on their hands . They have come full circle and for resurrecting this classic series in such a quality and entertaining way they deserve some kudos . Not only is MK x a great fighter it's a great game . In other words a flawless victory .

Dont get me wrong theres some solid new enteries(Erron Black for one, awesome!) the game just feels empty without the other characters, who knows we may see them later in the year but for now..i have this feeling that im gonna get bored of the game because some of my favourites arent there.

The gameplay is pretty sick though, i have yet to get stuck into the story mode(might be the reason im not feeling the new characters). i have just been kicking it old school on the Klassic tower, either way its a great addition to my fight collection.

Let me start off by saying that this game looks amazing. Seeing this running 1080p at 60 fps is quite the sight. Once you factor in the over the top X-rays and fatalities, this game just becomes unbelievably fun. My wife actually watched me playing through a couple of towers just so she could watch the gore-fest...and she's not even a gamer.

This game is bad ass, and its netcode is actually really, really good for a fighting game. Lots to do, single player or mutiplayer, and lots of different variations keep the game fresh with tons of character types to choose from. Story is quite fun and has some awesome fight scenes, and the brutalities and fatalities are utterly disgusting. Will rate 10/10 when predator is released.

The best Mortal Kombat to date! The gameplay is as precise and slick as ever, the graphics are great, the story is interesting and the some of the same great characters are back as well as multiple new ones. The only down side to this game is that the story mode is very short. I'm also not a fan of the micro transactions.

Great graphics, cool character design, core gameplay is very good.

Annoying DLC advertising on the home screen, DLC is overpriced.

As in MK9, the Krypt has to be navigated with a cheat map or you risk wasting your hard earned Kredits on a level soundtrack or concept art for the practice level.

    Online is somewhat laggy.

    Good game, room for improvement.

Mortal Kombat X is the first game, aside from the original MK and few other titles, that I enjoy playing. There have been disappointmenting titles in the series, but this game is one of them. Sure, I wish it had a bigger roster, but Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Ferra/Toss are more than enough fun to play. And, sure, there are more Cage's than I would like, but I believe there are some hidden gems in the game. The roster doesn't take away from the games fighting mechanics.

I also have the four guest Kombatants, which I'm overly excited about.

I really enjoy how each character has three variations, which affect combat. That makes a significant impact on the characters and opens the opportunity for a new level of mastery. I enjoyed the story mode and multi-player mode. I have not played online, so I can't comment on that. However, no game can be as bad as most CoD titles when it comes to online lag. The fighting is smoother than the average MK title. The fatalities and brutalities are violent, which makes them awesome. The graphics aren't stunning, but they're at their best when you're performing fatalities or x-ray attack.

I recommend this game to people.

My favorite was kustom kombat not only for chaos such as quadruple fire missile matches but the modifiers can help even the playing field if you have a friend that is either way worse or better than you.

If you played the last one, this one should be easy to learn. Now there is just stuff such as variations which are a bit hit and miss. Some are blatantly better than others which really makes the three for each character redundant. Your goal if you want to succeed is utilize all your abilities to juggle opponents into brutal combos and prevent them from doing the same. Easy to learn, impossible to master.

I also wasn't a fan of the factions. The game introduces you to all five of the factions as soon as you start the game and you get to choose which one you'd like to be a part of. The problem is that the war between them just doesn't seem like a fair fight. You just can't pit all the Sub-Zero fans against all the Kano fans and expect the latter to stand a chance. If your faction is severely outnumbered(like mine,Special Forces represent) there really is no point to even trying against the larger ones. I'd prefer something such as comparing the factions' collective online W/L ratio, that way a couple high level players can win against a thousand button mashers. Other than some cosmetic unlockables, that is all the factions have.

Fatalities are back and better than ever. All the imagination that went into these is way too much and that's why it's glorious. Next gen adds some more realism with twitching eyes and eyes rolling back into heads. Gross.

With several small downgrades littered throughout the place, shorter story, smaller roster, etc. No honest person can say this is a completely upgraded sequel. However, it is a better game in general and it has gallons of blood on offer to those fortunate enough to play.

This game is deep.

The average player probably will not grasp every mechanic, so if you read a review that calls this game a "button masher" or a "brawler", just stop reading it because the author has no understanding of what makes a fighting game good.

Each character is highly detailed and thematic with a core set of 3-5 special moves, and 8-20 preset combo strings. They also have 3 variations each, which changes the special moves, adds new ones, changes the preset strings, and even changes some normal attacks. The amount of versatility for each character is stunning. . . and I was a skeptic. Believe the hype.

With a new Endurance meter to manage your dashing and the new run mechanic, building combos is better than ever. It is obvious in the design that running is meant to not only pressure your opponent, but link together combo strings that otherwise would not be possible. So manage that meter!

If you like fighters, but are not sold on MK, this is the game that will change your mind.

I would rate a 0, but a 1 usually hurts ratings worse. When will these shady USA game companies realize how tired people are getting of paying $60 to receive only half of a game? They make the entire game, then decide what parts to cut out and sell separately. The whole point of DLC is to ADD to games, not to sell the other already-completed

The game does a lot really well, and the character variety is amazing with the new style system. Not only does it add another wrinkle of strategy to each fight, it's also helping to minimize cheapness and spamming in versus matches. While in MK9 you could take certain characters and spam their cheap moves to death, MKX has far better balance because there seem to be clear pros and cons to each style. I'm really appreciating that balance.
I also tip my cap to the day one release being smooth on the server side. I was able to hop online and play without any issues on the first day, which we've seen plenty of titles fail recently doing that smoothly.
The faction alliance, living towers, and krypt are all great additions as well and add daily, monthly, goals that you can work on or continuing unlocking new skins, fatalities etc... Personally, I like that touch because it feels like you're earning your gear similar to an RPG.
The story mode for me is sub-par -- it's actually the weakest part of the game, but that's just my opinion. The reason being that while it's cool to get a "taste" of every character, it's really annoying to just get the hang of a character's kombos and special moves only to be thrown to a totally new character. It becomes a struggle to have to learn each one, and takes away from the enjoyment.
Story mode is not why this game will sit on my shelf for years though, the online re-playability is what will do that, and this game certainly has it.
    Pros:
-Great character balance, variety, and lets you unlock skins and new fatalities as you go
-Daily and monthly achievements to work for, along with new faction alliance adds fun content
-Online interface is useful, can sort by a variety of filters to find best match, and servers have been strong at release
-Has incredible re-playability and worth the money

    Cons:
-Story mode is over-rated and I'm just doing it to get it over with
-Still feels a tad like MK9 at certain times, but enough has been done to separate it
-Micro Transactions are a little silly

This game is absolutely brutal. If you're not a fan of blood and gore, I would highly recommend you stay away. However, if you're in the majority who love tearing the hearts out of defeated foes with style, I can safely say this game will satisfy your urges.

Firstly lets start with the single player story, which takes place around 25 years after the events of Mortal Kombat 9. To sum up the plot, there's an elder god who goes by the name of Shinnok, trying to use the power of an ancient amulet to take over Earth Realm and it's up to our heroes of the story, old and new, to stop him. I'll say this right now, I suck at Mortal Kombat. Straight up. So for me, the story mode is always something I jump on immediately to familiarize myself with the new roster of fighters. The story itself is pretty good, some minor changes have been made to the way it's told, such as the new QTE's added into some cutscenes to keep you on your toes. They're not the annoying kind like in resident evil where if you mess up a button press, you have to restart. You have some room for error which is welcomed and adds in a cool feature. If you do happen to mess up one of the QTE sequences, when you get into the actual fight, the character you're playing as in the chapter will make a snide comment about how your opponent got a lucky shot or something. The dynamic dialogue in the game is another great feature that eliminates the boredom before fights, hearing the same lines over and over and over again, and instead brings some cool banter to the table before each fight, although some of it can be quite lacking depending on character choice. As fun as the story was however, I don't believe it lives up to the story in MK9 and actually is quite short in length, maybe hitting about 5-6 hours. This isn't too big of an issue however since there is plenty more content in the game to keep you more than occupied for a while longer.

Unfortunately I can't really comment on how the online is in the game, since my internet runs at potato speeds and I struggle to connect with really anyone at all. King of the hill makes a return though which I am very happy to say. The new meta game is also an interesting concept which has you choose between 1 of 5 different factions when you start the game: The Black Dragon, Lin Kuei, Special Forces,White Lotus and the most excellent Brotherhood of Shadow. Being part of a faction allows you to level it up as you play and partake in Invasion Challenges, which are like random events when Outworld invades Earthrealm and all the factions compete to see who can do the best job of defending. It's a cool side thing that gives you the opportunity to gain new unlocks, although most of these are just borders and icons, which can be a little lackluster.

Towers make a return also, you have your standard 'Test your might' and 'Test your luck' along with a few others as well. I have to point out though, the challenge tower from MK9 is gone. Yes, you read correctly. Personally, this is quite an upset as this was my favourite aspect of the previous Mortal Kombat game. However, in it's replacement they added in 'Living Towers' which are like the traditional tower but with a specific challenge or modifier added on. However, I don't think this makes up for the removal of the challenge tower.

The gameplay itself is great. Everything feels fluent, kombos feel bad ass when you pull them off and the roster is pretty solid, with some cool new additions such as Erron Black. Although I was upset when I saw that people like the now old and less cool Johnny Cage made a return when Kabal, Noob Saibot, Smoke, Jade and many others didn't make a return. Don't give me the bullsh*t that "Well, they died in MK9 so why would they come back?" when Lui Kang, Kung Lao and Kitana come back for this instalment. I'm happy that they're back, don't get me wrong, but I would have liked to have seen some others return also. There were some issues concerning the fact that it was said you could play as Goro in this game, only to see him come in as day one DLC. I'll let you decide your own opinion on that matter though.

Personally this game definitely felt like a worthy sequel to MK9, but fell a little short of it, with the removal of stage fatalities and babalities. Similar to Jak 2 actually, it was a great game but didn't quite live up to the original. Despite this, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who remotely likes fighting games, or Mortal Kombat, as it's a great instalment into the genre and franchise and will give you hours upon hours of fun and fast paced action.

Most surprising to me was the amount of content inside the actual game itself. I REALLY liked the 3 different variations to each character and hope that this is a mainstay in the series now. It offers different ways to play each character and keeps opponents unsure of how to approach you.
this game packs everything from different match modes to chat rooms/ lobbies to adding different elements to the actual fight itself. Such as adding random lighting strikes, slowing / speeding up the fight/ Random lazer beams scrolling across the screen etc. It adds a lot more depth than I was expecting. Then there are the new characters.....Some, such as Erron Black and Ferra/Torr are just nasty...... I mean, NASTY. And some feel like they are just rekindled skins of our favorite vets. But on the whole, this is a great experience. The Krypt is always a welcome way to find unlockables and I really like how they changed the dynamic of it. I may not be a fighting game fanatic, but Mortal Kombat X certainly renewed my pleasure in partaking in this genre. If you like fighting games, this is a must buy. Even if you are not into fighting games.......must buy. definitely a 9/10

Mortal Kombat X is the best mortal kombat so far. The game is more fluid and it also gives us a chance to change the characters fighting style through the variation system. The fatalities are more gruesome and more detailed. This makes killing your opponent very fun. This game shows us that nether realm are very talented. I found that the story was the same old battle after battle with some quick time events.
I give Mortal kombat x a nine out of ten.

The latest entry into the Mortal Kombat is by far the best and most polished game yet. Granted it does have a couple of minor flaws, but none of which are game breaking and can be overlooked.

    The Good:
-Unbelievable visuals/animations. Fatalities, Brutalities, and Faction Kills look better than ever.
-New Krypt layout is a surprisingly fun way to spend koins and gain access to the unlockables
-Fun story mode with an average storyline (remember people, this is a fighting game. A story mode is a bonus)
-A large variety in content that will keep people coming back.

    The Bad:
-Netcode can be shaky at times, which will cause severe input lag and virtually makes a match unplayable. This has been improved with the latest update and doesn't happen nearly as often (for me at least)
-The uppercut is way to powerful of an attack for something that is one input (even by MK standards). It currently is a 14% hit that is hardly punishable due to the quick recovery and push back on block. Not a huge gripe but it is a very, very damaging move that is easily done.

    The Ugly:
-Currently this game doesn't have anything that is game breaking or bad enough to harm anybody's experience with the game.

Currently this is the best fighting game on the market for ps4 and even though it isn't 100% perfect, it is an awesome game to play.

    **Edit**
I find it absolutely comical how people can rate this game under a 3 only because of the DLC that is offered. If it's something that bothers you, THEN DON'T BUY IT. None of the DLC that is offered is game breaking or puts players in any sort of advantage. It's additional content. ADDITIONAL. The new 'cool' thing to do is slam games for offering DLC at launch or at specific intervals throughout the games lifecycle. It does not detract from the gameplay in any way what so ever. The game is still an excellent fighting game.

Long story short: the reason why the majority of new games offer so much DLC is because people will dish out the cash to buy it. If you don't want it, or disagree with the principal, don't buy the content. Stop with the BS and actually review the game for what it is.

    Review:
I should preface this by saying that I have not played a Mortal Kombat game since the SNES-days, and probably haven't touched a fighter in about as long either. So I was somewhat surprised that I enjoyed Mortal Kombat X as much as I did.

The graphics are very good and the frame rate is stable with the exception of a few times during cut-scenes in the story mode. The fighting is crisp and fluid with a lot of depth concerning positioning, reach of the characters and their moves and what not. I did have some trouble nailing combos at first until I found a setting under options called "negative edge" and turned it off, after that it went much smoother.

The story, script and even voice acting is surprisingly engaging, especially if you are familiar with the characters. While not achieving greatness on any level it is decidedly more than I expected considering the amount of people who can be expected to buy a Mortal Kombat game for the story (probably somewhere between none at all and 0%). The banter between the fighters at the start of a match is also often times witty.

There are a large heap of different game modes (both offline and online as well as vs humans or AI). Aside from the story mode and the standard versus modes there are standard towers (fight different enemies on the way to the top), living towers (towers that change hourly, daily or weekly), test your luck (where you play with different kinds of randomized modifiers), test your might (where you buttonmash to break objects), Faction Wars (where you declare for a faction and then collect points and fight on behalf of that faction), the exploratory Krypt (where you unlock skins and finishing moves and more) and an extensive training mode. And I cant swear that I didn't forget one or two in that list. There are also close to thirty characters with each of them having three different variations.

In short; there is A LOT of content in this game. But it is of course all of it dependent on you liking the basic premise: fighting games with gratuitous violence. Speaking of the violence is as over the top as ever, often times approaching almost comical heights of depravity.

On the negative side I did have some connectivity issues early on after release, but they seem to have subsided with the few patches since released. There is also A LOT of content to unlock, maybe too much, and some micro transactions or DLC if you cant be bothered to work for it. None of it matters from a balance perspective however; it is all cosmetic with the exception of the release of new characters in coming DLC:s.

    Verdict: 9/10

I do realize this might not be the best math fighting and all, balance might be a bit off. None of this will bother you if you aren't crazy fighting nerd. For normal people, average gamers, I mean, MKX is a pure holiday. Everything you ever saw in MK series is here and it's bloody perfect! Female characters finally look cute, they're not like those protein monstrosities from MK9. X-rayI do realize this might not be the best math fighting and all, balance might be a bit off. Storyline is finally interesting and detailed (storyline in fighting? I know what you're thinking, guys, but you HAVE to see it, it'll amaze you from every point). I can go on for days, here, I just want you to understand one simple fact:
MKX is here and it's bloody awesome.
Every tiny thing that was in MK9 lived on to its sequel and was carefully expanded. Even Krypt is not just a bonus area, it's a quest, an adventure! You have to explore various locations and... dudes, don't listen to me, just play it already.
If you thought that MKX is just a repaired MK9, as I thought during all the development process, just dig your doubts somewhere deep and dark, buy a game and prepare to be amazed. The less you know about the game the better.

The violence is way over the top, so it can't be and shouldn't be taken seriously. Otherwise it's a very solid game with demanding fights.
