This game is so fun to play, but there is not much of a story. 10/10 gameplay, but 6/10 story. If the game had not had a bunch of the story cut out it would have been so much better. The opening of the game is epic. Dumbest part by far was the reason why Quiet was wearing her almost non existent outfit.

One of the best intros in a videogame ever. As a longtime fan of Metal Gear, I think Kiefer Sutherland did a great job as Snake. The stealth gameplay is some of the best I've played, and I was invested in the story from beginning to end, but was caught off guard when it was over. If I had one complaint, it's that the game feels a little unfinished.

I’ve followed the Metal Gear series for most of my gaming life. Through it’s ups and downs. The Phantom Pain has both, ups and downs. Without going in depth, this game was released unfinished. One of the last and key sections of the game/series was never finished and removed before the games release. It’s an unfortunate way to end a series of this status. In the end, all that’s left is a Phantom Pain and that maybe the most appropriate way to end this series after all...

The ONLY issue is that, toward the end, something just felt off. I feel like this game was supposed to have several more chapters, but they just stopped. I know there were extra post-game chapters and some specifically that dealt with the kid (no spoilers), but they felt out of place with lots of filler missing in between. You'd repeat old chapters but they'd be stealth or higher difficulty, but then there would be new story chapters peppered in between. It was really odd.

If the game had been 100% completed or just ended after the final boss battle, this would be one of maybe 5 games that I'd ever give a 10/10.

I haven't played any other games of the franchise and as a result, don't have any memories coming from Kojima games. I'm unfortunately the type of player that can't help himself but to explore and do everything a game has to offer. In the case of MGSV, that'll be all missions, side missions and practice challenges. I find the gameplay loop of calling a chopper, selecting the research stuff, crafting upgrades, listening to mission briefing, selecting the mission gear, etc. a bit too lengthy and tedious. I'm only 20ish hours into the game but I already feel kinda tired of checking mostly generic objectives off of a single map.
I find it strange that every one of these generic missions has a director, and the list of characters featured in it; again, I'm not familiar with Kojima and how he does things, but this aspect of the game didn't appeal to me. Seemed to me they're too proud of every aspect of the game.
I tried to give the game another chance by playing fast and crazy; but the first side mission I selected to do this, I crossed a specific part of the map that triggered the introduction sequence of the assassin girl. The fight wasn't good and I spent the whole rest of the session watching cutscenes.

I might desperately try playing the game again, but it's really unlikely to happen.

They fail to take into account the world as a tool, something to use to your advantage. Metal Gear V does something special by slowly dropping you into different areas of Afghanistan and or Africa, encouraging you to use these places as a means of carrying out your mission. Any way you can think of doing is likely a possibility. You wanna send in your dog to slit everyone's throat? Do it. You wanna place bombs in a car, drive the car into an outpost, run away, and blow it up? Do it. You wanna create a death march where you drown enemy soldiers in shallow puddles? You're probably a screwed up individual, but you can definitely do it. It only becomes boring if you play out missions in the same way, your creativity is the only thing holding you back Expand

What I hated, It's fun. Why is that bad? Because I killed allot of people and not only did I have fun, I kidnaped some of them and then realized the war economy works the same way in real life.

What I loved, everything from the scenery to the mission is taken into gameplay. The characters are well designed and every gun has it's unique feel and the story is all kinds of bonkers. Best part of this game is that you don't need to play the previous games at all to understand anything being said.

A mission by mission structure where you choose your loadout before each mission but unlike Peace Walker, for a cost, you can change your loadout mid-mission via supply drops by individually selecting an item or by calling in a pre-made loadout. Great for switching play styles without wasting too much time.
The gameplay is great from the stealth aspects to the gunplay. I personally didn't use the reflex mode but it is a good addition to the game as it preserves the flow of sneaking through the large areas. I found it to take away some of the challange and if you're quick enough (or lucky) you don't need it ;)
The difficulty is where it should be. Not a hard game but can get the better of you if you're complacent.

As a story, for what little it has, it's just kinda meh.

The game has one of the best openings as a long narrative sequence escaping a hospital thats being attacked by people that want you dead.
But if you like this style of game then too bad! Go spend 30-50 hrs doing run around missions until the game feels like exposition dumping the rest of the narrative to you.
Granted the missions aren't bad to play. But not even half of them need to exist as they have no real purpose in the story other then building up Diamond Dogs and "bringing the legand back to life". In other words: get money, kidnap solders, waste time (especially the repeat missions).

Despite being a great open-world stealth action game, with flawless game design and military aesthetics, the game was said to be clearly unfinished, so I decided to skip it and not get myself disappointed. But a couple of months ago I picked it up in a sale and finally decided to check it out. And oh god it is bad. The gameplay is enjoyable, yes, but what happened to MGS? Where is all the story? Why is Snake so silent most of the game? Why do the story missions just repeat themselves? You just feel like the devs had no time or money (Kojima? No time? No Money??) and they just ripped cutscenes and turned them into cassette messages. The new villain Skullface has no backstory or motivation except some anger against the English language (what?), colonel Volgin from MGS3 is back from the dead (what??), a naked sniper deprived of words can shoot a jet with a sniper rifle but can't write something down with a pen or kill a crippled wounded guy in a hospital (what???), a lot of useless hassle with kids that has no resolution whatsoever, and I can go on and on. The game literally ends with nothing as the final act with Solidus and a big mech is simply missing. That is clearly not what should be in an MGS game. Basically, it is just half a game - gameplay with little to no consistent story. And it deserves half of a score. Expand

I prefer Playstation due to their focus on narrative games. For scoring, I’ll be using the Gameinformer review scale and of course influenced by my personal opinions.

    (8) Very Good. Innovated, but perhaps not in the right choice for everyone. This score indicates that there are many good things to be had, but arguable so.

    (-1) Unfinished Game

This is my first and I guess final Metal Gear Solid game. Story is intriguing but unfinished due to the developer inhouse fight so just left still twiddling your thumbs trying to understand the story. Gameplay, upgrades, content, and characters are all great and this game could have easily been a masterpiece if it was finished. I wish they added a little more stealth mechanics since once you're spotted, it's hard to hide since there aren't many hiding spots in a camp which is weird since I thought this game focus was stealth. There is also a lot of empty space in this open world which isn't a bad thing since it makes it feel more realistic. A lot of developer fill up their open world with random events every mile and it's annoying.

Since launch, I still put in a couple of hours every other day at the very least. This timeless masterpiece will forever remain in my heart as the greatest game of all time.

Now that my bias is out of the way, here is my raw, unfiltered review of this game. Metal Gear is such an amazing franchise, and a true inspiration to the gaming industry. To those who grew up playing all of the previous Metal Gear games, fans alike will all agree that this final installment of the Metal Gear series has the weakest story to date. Metal Gear has always been pretty vague when it comes to canonical fact or fiction. There is so much randomness, chaos, comedy, and tragedy when it comes to Metal Gear. It really exercises the player's imagination, and just putting together all of the pieces of story content is a challenge on its own.

That being said, The Phantom Pain still has so much to offer. It is such a shame that Fox Engine has been put to waste, considering the incredible graphics that still hold up to today's standards (in 2022). The gameplay may seem complex to newcomers at first, but players will soon come to realize its intuitiveness. The actors all did a great job when it came to playing their respective characters. Personally, Kiefer Sutherland as "Big Boss" was a welcoming surprise, despite a lot of fans being disappointed in David Hayter not returning. The music is top notch, as per usual when it comes to Metal Gear games.

Although Metal Gear will most likely not be making a return to the gaming industry, I'm still grateful to Kojima for giving us fans these incredible games. Metal Gear Solid V will forever be my favorite game of all time.

From this basic premise though, series creator Hideo Kojima, despite his many Hollywood troops and gratuitous scene selections still manages to tell a compelling anti-war narrative in which a player has the choice to either slaughter his way through a base, or spare all of their foes. Motivated by the writer's desire for the player to understand the consequences of nuclear war and its horrors, which the Metal Gears are analogous to in the plot.
What is most interesting to me about this game is how much it contrasts many of the other game franchises with similar demographics. Games such as GTA, Far Cry, Just Cause, and others allow the player to fulfill a fantasy of being a Hollywood action hero that gets to destroy buildings, commit gratuitous acts of violence, kill NPCs for no reason, and it all be framing you to be this "badass" (For lack of a better term). Whereas this game takes the same Mature rating that all of these games have and makes the arrogant kid who picks it up because he wants to play something fun sit with the consequences of his actions as the Narrative reminds you of your "sins" (A term the game uses throughout its dialog and is the central theme of one of its soundtrack pieces literally called "Sins of the Father"). It is admirable how well the writer understands and wishes to subvert his audience. Furthermore, the game incentivizes pacifism over gratuitous violence while also making it far more difficult. If you go through a mission without a single kill or the enemies never detected you at all (avoiding any confrontation at all), you get an S score, and the characters of the game congratulate you on a job well done, whereas those same characters will talk negatively if you score any less. I think this helps to add dignity to the human persons in the stories, even if they are just expressionless grunts. Overall, the gameplay alone is so good, that regardless of how bad you feel playing through the story, you need to play more of it. Almost as if the game is the drug that keeps you hooked so the writer can prove his point.
On to the Narrative review. The story is, on the surface, a simple revenge quest. You are the leader of a mercenary company, and your base is destroyed by a mysterious rogue operative, and it is your job to avenge your comrades and get revenge on this mysterious man. So, you travel from warzone to warzone, witnessing the horrors of war (and for some players who elect to, participate in them), in search of this mysterious man. The game is incredibly well-researched. Since it takes place in 1984, the game brings light to actual conflicts that occurred, in particular, The Soviet-Afghan War and the conflict in Angola-Zaire. Using a bit of parody, it shows the inner workings of the "War Economy" and the military-industrial complex as you see how these nations interact with certain mercenary corps and how the powers of the world promote this. But most compelling with the story is the aftermath after you achieve the revenge central to the Narrative, you receive the thematic thesis that the main character has. All of your allies feel completely distraught after losing their reason for being (The aforementioned revenge), but your character explains that he wishes to turn his mercenary corps into a nation of soldiers with nothing left to fight for. He understands that revenge would never fulfill him, only by building something greater than himself can he cope with the tragedy of all that he has done and all that he has lost. This is a very unique approach for a game’s revenge quest, especially compared to something like Just Cause 3.

This game is really great and kept me into the story. Sadly the story is not complete but for what it has it is quite the journey. It is unfortunate that the game could of been even better for Hideo's final Metal Gear game but, that would of just made fans' motivation to tie him down to it even more vicious.

The only reason it’s not a 10 is because a big portion of the ending is missing, all thanks to Konami.

The only thing that doesn’t work about this game is the second act and the ending, but these are very minor grievances due to mgsv’s focus of gameplay over story. Expand

Definitely not as good as Metal Gear Solid 4, but ok overall. Something about this game feels very disconnected and the story feels like an afterthought. I have so many contradictions with this game. For one side is one of the best gameplay that i have ever played in a 3rd person shooter game in my life. Is an open world that should have been a linear one, it doesn't make sense the side missions, the time you spend listening to a cassette everytime you want to understand the story and the fact that every character has a good construction, has his moments, and the main character is like a dumb guy that does'n talk near the entire game. So disappointed for that one Expand

First of all, if you have to play this game, then watch video guides for every mission, it's really not worth it to explore, this game doesn't reward you for exploration, and if you don't read guides, you are gonna be stuck.

For a stealth-heavy game, it sucks:

    - Most of the missions are time-sensitive, you can't just sit back and make plans to take out enemies silently. The game doesn't tell you about the time limit, but after a while, it will fail.
    - The dumbest way to take cover: face the camera to the wall and push forward. which leads to the next dumbest point
    - If you are close to an enemy, you need to take cover and then use binoculars. If you just prone and take out your binoculars you'll be seen. Makes no f-ing sense whatsoever.
    - You can't change equipment on the run. You have to stupidly wait for the supply drop. Not to mention choosing the supply is a pain the ass. What the F is the excuse for not pausing the game when using iDroid if we are playing offline?
    - sliding down the pipe will kill you, why the F implement it then?

For non-stealth missions, it sucks even harder, most of the missions need one kind of gimmick or another. Nothing is intuitive and nothing makes sense.

This game is developed by a Japanese freak, I don't even want to name him. You play one of his games, you play them all. They are all complicated in the same way, yet they are all wonky in the same way.

Answer: 75 characters is between 10 words and 19 words with spaces included in the character count. If spaces are not included in the character count, then 75 characters is between 12 words and 25 words.

If this is where Kojima does finally leave the series he created, it will be a bittersweet send-off, both for Big Boss and one of gaming's most intriguing auteurs.

The holy grail of world-building games, it’s argued, is a black box that lets players do as they like with minimal handholding. Pliability with just the right measure of accountability. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a tactical stealth simulation wrapped in a colossal resource management puzzle inside a love letter to theatrical inscrutability, comes the closest of any game I’ve yet played to realizing that ideal.

There’s no denying the Game of the Year potential of The Phantom Pain. The campaign is absolutely massive, it’s almost too much to cope. That being said, Chapter II is a huge let-down and feels like artificial padding. Still, this is about as good as tactical espionage operations can get in a video game. [Oct 2015]
