30 BUCKS FOR A DEMO. In the past the MGS 2 demo was free with ZOE. MGS V is an example of a dirty practice. The main mission is only 1 hour length and the other missions are very stupid.

It took me 53 minutes to complete the main mission. There are five or so "side missions" USING THE SAME MAP. That's it, that's the entire "game". Yes, the voice acting, graphics, gameplay etc are outstanding. But to market this as a full game is very deceptive.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MGS GZ is not a game it is not a demo either, it is like a opening to a superhero show where the hero beats up other small time villains before getting to the main bad guy (skull face). There is no reason to buy this unless you are a hardcore MGS fan. There is no story here, you break into a base and you pick up Paz and Chico. You figure out Paz has a bomb and she dies jumping out of the chopper to save big boss' life. Then the credits roll. The overall gameplay is stellar, the stealth aspects of the game are incredible and the game is a marvel to look at (unless you look very closely at the walls and floors). The main mission can be beaten in a span of 10 minutes and the side missions are boring. All you do is rescue another guy or kill two guys or blow up some turrets. You have to collect various XOF patches to unlock the last two missions and it just feels like padding. This game is worth 5 dollars no more. While I am confident that the phantom pain will be an amazing game that will blow minds. However stay away from this title or wait until a price drop. Expand

I'd like to preface this review by saying I am a HUGE Metal Gear Solid fan. My first experience with Metal Gear Solid was at the tail end of the 90's where I played a demo of MGS on PlayStation. I was fairly young and didn't fully understand it, but ended up picking up a used copy for $20. That is where my love for the series began.

Fast forward to 2014. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes releases, a good excuse to bust out the PS4 that had otherwise been gathering dust and get waist deep in the newest iteration of my favourite gaming series. Alas, there was barely enough to submerge my ankles. Ground Zeroes is to video games what a paddling pool is to an Olympic swimmer. You can't swim in that, heck, you could hardly get wet in that! My first playthrough of Ground Zeroes lasted me 46 minutes. 46 minutes for the whole campaign. A campaign that consisted of neutered stealth mechanics, a shocking Kiefer Sutherland performance, regenerating health, removal of key parts of the series such as the Codec, Cardboard Boxes and Wall-Knocking and a multitude of other reasons why Ground Zeroes was disappointing.

Back at the launch of the PS2, a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2 was released which was considered to be one of the best demos ever made for a video game. A first time player could have spent an hour on this demo, and it cost nothing (except that it came with a copy of Zone of the Enders, which to be fair was a great game anyway). My playthrough of Ground Zeroes took 46 minutes and cost me almost $50.

I think the worst thing is that there are people defending this in droves. This isn't a matter of opinion - if you defend such daylight robbery, you're wrong. End of story. This game, regardless of what you think of it is an enormous ripoff. The extra missions? Please. Each one can be completed in 15 minutes and there's only 5 of them. Not to mention they're set in the exact same area as the campaign, which would struggle to break a square kilometre.

Summary is, the game sets a bad precedent. If other companies catch on, paying this much for 1 hour long demos could be come the norm - and as if companies like Activision charging $130 and up for Standard Edition Call of Duty copypastes wasn't bad enough! (NZ Prices, shocking I know) The sad thing is: They STILL have more gameplay per dollar than Ground Zeroes! The price aside, the game still manages to set a bad precedent, this time for the series. Removing key elements, reflex mode, cut-down stealth... As a huge MGS fan, this game makes me sick to my stomach. I didn't like MGS4 all that much either for lots of different reasons. but this is on a whole other level. Rent this out, at worst it'll cost you $8 and you'll finish it in an hour or two. Don't buy it. Don't support this kind of money-grubbing. Don't support anybody that thinks this is acceptable. The future of gaming might just depend on it.

Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zero was an OK game. When I first saw the trailer back at E3, I got hyped. Now, after hearing how short it was, I got less hyped. I still game it a shot. Basically, its a $30 demo. I'd rather wait another year and have these parts included in the ACTUAL game. 4/10.

Even if its kinda good , you shouldnt support a 1 hour 20 mins game for 30 dollars if you still have some hope for the gaming in the future , even when the game is exciting for the hour you take to finish it , that cost is an insult when it could be even 5 dollars or included as a demo for the phantom pain

Infuriatingly short. I can't even call this DLC quality content. It's more like a demo--like the ones I used to see included in my copies of PC Gamer years ago. In fact, I remember a Metal Gear demo around the time that took me longer to complete that this train wreck.

I've read quite a few of the reviews from the magazine lackeys, and I found them wanting (no surprise there). This game looks *nice*, but it is by no means a PERFECT SCORE kind of impressive, even if you were to ignore the fact that it's a 30 dollar demo. The environment lacked almost anything in the way of impressive detail, and the story had the charm of a bad translation to an off-brand JRPG.

I'm embarrassed for Konami just as much as I am angry at them. Everything about this screams shameless greed, and claiming that this couldn't exist as a prologue within Phantom Pain is an affront to the intellect of all Konami's customers.

Yes, the plot is very non-existent and sometimes brainless. The only thing that really supports the game is again, the gameplay. Though the voice acting and graphics may look good, the gameplay is where it's at. But like I said, you won't enjoy the gameplay for long. I beat the main mission in about an hour and the extras didn't really catch my full attention for me to want to finish. Ground Zeros is not worth full price but if you can get it on sale for under $10 or you can borrow it from a friend, you may want to go for it just to experience the solid gameplay. But do not get it at full price, you will be disappointed. Yes, the game is very disappointing.

The enemy AI in general is pretty piss poor. You can kill a guy from far away, another one will run up to that exact spot and start shooting at you, you can easily kill him (the enemies don't take cover usually), and then do that to the next guy, and the next, and the next, you can basically keep doing that until you run out of bullets.

Once you are out, you can just hang of a ledge somewhere for an infinite amount of time and the enemies will NEVER find you as long as you are not in their direct line of sight, and if they DO find you, don't worry, it's very hard to die in this game now because they replaced normal health with regenerative health, you can now go full Rambo on your opponents, and then just hide in a corner for 30 seconds when the screen turns read. You can also tag enemies and see them through walls for some reason.

All in all this is a demo, and a poor demo at that. It's short, it's small, and it costs $30, you'd be better off buying a game like Dishonored or any of the Splinter Cell games, basically anything you haven't played yet, I guarantee that you'll have a better experience with it than Ground Zeroes.

All the fun and interesting features of Metal Gear stealth have all been stripped away. The stealth boils down to spamming tranquillizer darts into enemies. Sneaking has become a joke, it's all about trial and error now. The enemies have a ridiculous line of sight and unlike past Metal Gear games where you can always find places to hide or find ways to conceal yourself, in this game the most you can do to conceal yourself is hide behind walls.

Because actually attempting to stealth requires you to restart the game over and over, you'll have a great time constantly skipping the same cutscenes and running back and forth between the cliffs saving prisoners. Eventually you'll be able to beat the stealth, but only after you have memorised the location of every single enemy in every single area and where they move around.

If you don't care about the stealth though, don't get your hopes up. The enemy AI is stupid. Even MGS1 had better AI combat than this. You can literally hide in some small building and just kill the AI while occasionally waiting for your health to regenerate when you get hit. I was able to kill about 500 soldiers just camping in one spot.

Oh and the story itself is a total ripoff. you get about 30 mins worth of cutscenes including the credits. There is only one level, camp omega. every mission takes place in this one level. The main mission takes about as long as the tanker chapter in MGS2, The tanker had at least 40 mins of cutscenes though, and it had a boss. There is no boss fight in GZ though.

The controls seem to have taken a step back from MGS4 and the camera is absolutely awful. Often you'll have an awkward camera placement where you can't see a thing. The cqc has also become overly complicated, most of the actions are based around doing certain combinations while mashing the button or holding it. The old cqc was a lot simpler in my opinion.

The radio chatter in the game is extremely annoying. Miller gives you completely useless information such as "press X to crawl" or "tranquilizers put enemies to sleep". He never has anything interesting to say, no entertaining codec calls. In the cutscenes too, he doesn't sound very emotional. Keither and everyone else manages to deliver an excellent performance.

As short as it is, overall I'd say it has a good story and some of the best graphics I've seen for a console game. But the gameplay itself is too frustrating and tedious, especially the part where you have to carry the prisoners to the chopper. Successfully stealthing shouldn't boil down to trial and error. This game is a massive low point in the series and the quality has dropped significantly. I hope that things are drastically improved for the Phantom Pain.

Metal Gear used to be different and for the first time while i am playing a new metal gear i miss the old ones. it felt more like a demo rather than a game. It didn't get me excited to continue the story when Phantom Pain is released. Of course that is why this game is out to help us with the open stealth style of gameplay. There is sadly a lack of the CODEC system which is kinda sad for a fan of this game since the original MGS. The graphics are great and the options for infiltrating the camp are pretty varied. There are collectables and some bonus missions to keep you playing for another hour and a half or so. But that is a problem in its own. The game is extremely short, even my sister who is not the best gamer out there beat the first mission in two hours and twelve minutes. In total it took her about four and a half hours to beat the game. It took me about three. So to sum up the positives are graphics, fun, and makes me really want the Phantom Pain. The negatives are animations on running, controls feel a little stiff, lack of content for price, and no CODEC. Also as a side note oddly enough when interrogating enemies Big Bosses voice is audio but the answer the enemy your interrogating is just text at the bottom of the screen. I got this game at just 15.99 American dollars which is better then the thirty some paid but still not as good as Dead Rising: Case Zero which was only five dollars and took me about an hour or two more than this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hearing Sutherlands voice coming out of Snake's mouth is infuriating. While there is an excuse for this in Phantom Pain, it doesn't fly here. Kojima used the same Japanese voice actor consistently. Perhaps this a cultural difference, but he didn't understand how english speaking audiences associate the character with the voice actor. Additionally Snake doesn't behave like Big Boss, but rather a selfish Sutherland who's creative input is to 'seem cool' not by acting cool, but by making other characters idiotic. The idea that anyone would follow this man is ludicrous.

If you don't care about any of that - MGS has the best stealth gameplay of all time, hands down, & this is an excellent demo for The Phantom Pain.

This is a demo. There's no way this is any kind of a prologue since the entire story is already in trailers.. NOTHING new is really revealed at all.

This really is the equivalent of the MGS demo that came out in '98 but you are paying $30 for it with some extras on the side.

This isn't even the equivalent of the VR Missions expansion.

I would have expected this from a developer that pumps out CoD games, or from EA or some other swindling company.

I'm incredibly disappointed this has come from Konami/Kojima Productions. This should have been $10 at best.

Extras and side ops are just that.. extras. You play ANY game way above the usual amount of playtime you'll get out of it. Indeed I have replayed MGS games countless times now, but when it boils down to it.. at a MINIMUM you should get an hour of actual game for every $10.

This has not happened, we have payed $20 or $30 for 1 hour 30 mins at best.. they originally wanted $40 for this game.

I really wanted to justify this purchase but ultimately I can't. People are saying 'oh but extras, oh but replayability'. It's not a valid point.. I can replay ANY game as much as I want.. most other games have extras or side missions.

Rent this game.. the Phantom Pain will be out early next year anyway.

It's irrelevant how great the gameplay is, the music, the graphics or anything else.

In actual fact I'm quite pissed off that they ditched the inventory system, we now have regen health, there's no codec (super lame), David Hayter is MIA (although I believe this is basically a troll by Kojima), Miller's VA is awful and we badly need Cam Clarke back in the mix if possible. Cool gadgets and stuff are all but gone. No more personal radar.

It's ditched a lot of things that make Metal Gear a Metal Gear game. It's hard to believe Kojima expected no backlash for this game.

Objectively this is a game that's terrible value, but has really great content, but is a terrible Metal Gear game.

It will please people who have no sense of value and who have never played a Metal Gear or stealth game before.

Which is exactly what it's done.. appealed to the lowest common denominator.

It's a real shame for MGS Series. Weak gameplay mechanics + stupid AI. Dead open world. You can stand and shoot absolutely every solder from one position without any cover. No stealth reqired. If complete The Phantom Pain will be made in the same key, I will recommend to play it on YouTube with a popcorn. Kojima is cool at videomontage and storybuilding, but gameplay mechanics is very weak. Expand

i'm not even mentioning the length here: this game is Bad. I've been a metal gear fan for like a decade and this game is Bad. If you like stealth games play Dishonored, hell play the new Thief game even. I thought Thief sucked too but at least you feel somewhat sneaky/aware of your current situation in that game some of the time. I thought Thief sucked too but at least you feel somewhat sneaky/aware of your current situation in that game some of the time. Everything in this game feels loosey-goosey as hell, janky etc. You have no idea how visible you are at any moment and never get the drop on enemies you haven't already tagged are or could be. You will die and restart and checkpoints over and over and over and over. Normally I'm fine with this, I looove stealth games and love to restart a mission so I can get by with a non-lethal playthrough but this game doesn't teach you anything when you die. It's just random **** happening and you are expected to wade through it until you get lucky enough to get to a new checkpoint without walking into an enemy's incredibly long line of sight. It's ambitious sure but the core gameplay has suffered a lot at the addition of the "open world" (i.e. one giant boring level) which sounds cool in theory and the ability to drive cars, which I didn't know any metal gear fan ever wanted to do in a metal gear game? The driving feels just as bad as the rest of the game anyway. I rented this game and I'm still super disappointed. Expand

There might be an interesting game in this engine, but it’s not here, not yet, and as a result Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is at best a very expensive demo that should only be approached with the lowest expectations.

Newbies will be lost, veterans not satisfied. It’s firing on all cylinders but the rounds don’t last. Nice showcase of the new engine, though. [Issue#241]
