I'm not sure how many people worked on this or time scale given to programmers to make this but its not good enough, especially for the full price game they're charging for it. It's obvious EA put this out to test the waters to see if there is still public interest with the franchise after the abysmal ME:Am Expand

As EA finally added an option to choose VO and subs language separately, I'm changing my review to be relevant. Mass Effect was and still is a universally loved masterpiece, and seeing it refreshed, seeing the renewed interest of the community, both old and new is heartwarming. Despite all that, I'm here to rate Legendary Edition on its own.

LE is basically a quick and rather cheap way for EA and Bioware to attract interest to ME franchise as a whole, after Andromeda failure and before new Mass Effect game. While graphical and gameplay changes are welcome, there is obvious lack of technical polish. Bugs that are older than a lot of teenagers are still there for our despair, and there are also some new (nasty) ones.

I really hope it all will be fixed in the end, and what we get is a clean, polished and convenient Mass Effect trilogy for us to return to from time to time and reflect on our memories of playing it for the first time ever.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all the games back in 2007-2012 and even named my daughter that was born 2011 Tali. That is how much I loved Mass Effect after having spent hundred of hours in ME and ME2. Then came ME3 and it sucked so hard that I did not touch the games at all again until now with the legendary edition.

So how different do I think the game(s) feel now almost ten years later? Well, ME and ME2 are still good games and even still great from a story perspective but ME3 is still there to ruin the entire experience. Yes, there is a huge numbers of DLC included and they are supposed to make the last entry of this series more palatable than it was when I finished it back in 2012. But ME3 is still the retarded sibling to the great ME and the perhaps even greater ME2.

ME3 lacks dialog choices and I feel like I am watching a movie with some exciting moments in it but my Shepard is more or less railroaded and does not feel like my Shepard at all in ME3, it feels like he just became a shadow or and imposter of my Shepard that I played through ME and ME2. This makes the game very disappointing despite the improvements to the combat mechanic that now with the Legendary edition is actually ok even in the first ME.

The story that started out as a space opera that was all about hope and victory against impossible odds, not unlike the original Star Wars trilogy, sadly turns into an artsy fartsy attempt at being edgy in the last installment. ME3 is a very beautiful shell but a shell nonetheless and a very empty shell once opened at that. The ending of the different story lines is deeply unsatisfactory and the ending(s) of the ME3 and the entire saga is just as bad now as it was almost ten years ago, I would dare say it is even worse now as it feels so bad despite me being older and not as emotional as I was when I was younger.

So my recommendation to all players that love the ME-universe is this, play the first two installments and consider Shepard’s and his crew and love interest story finished after ME2. By killing sovereign and destroying the collector base you made the reaper invasion impossible and you stopped the cycle and Shepard and his friends can take a well deserved vacation and Shepard and his love interest can live happily ever after. Because what is so wrong with a happy ending? There is too much sadness and doom and gloom in the world right now and even back in 2012 and I still feel that Shepard and the players that loves or loved this franchise deserved to be able to get a happy ending to the epic story but instead we got the equivalent to Luke Skywalker committing suicide by flinging himself down the reactor pit instead of fighting the impossible odds and defeating the Empire.

I know that games and stories where the main protagonists ends up winning is not “modern” but I still really believe that one of the colored endings should have given just that.

ME1 10 points and ME2 10 points but the disappointment that is ME3 really sours the entire dish as the landing of the entire trilogy actually matters a lot, it is not all about the journey because the destination is also important. And this journey felt like flying first class just to crash land in taliban controlled parts of Afghanistan. So I cannot in good conscience give this package more than 5 because of the terrible last installment and the even worse ending to what could have been the best sci fi and space opera experience of the **** century.

The graphics are better but it's like slapping on mods and now your paying for it. The 2nd and 3rd are not that noticeable in the improvements but they did warn us before about that. Dlc is missing but it's not one that'll you'll miss. A certain part was changed and made me go back and load it up again on my PC and made me think "really? You guys don't have the budget to add a better ending or put the missing dlc but you can censor or change the camera angle because of the times?" And it went a little downhill from there. I know the next Mass effect will be less spicy to "protect" themselves from fake backlash. The game is not much of a improvement but it's good enough until you realize they'll change things. I won't support changing to shield yourself from problems but FF7 remake I'll accept due to not failing me before. Time will tell if future mass effects will be anywhere close to 1-3 or be a huge mess and almost ending the series hype and faith. Overall just play this on PC the original and run on the highest settings with a few mods to improve it and you'll get the same thing or better. I know I'm being harsh but I was expecting the original just upped and with a tiny hope of a different ending or add on like Persona 4 golden but guess I'll move on. If you truly want it buy it if not read more reviews and make up your mind from those. The times change but the way games stories are made shouldn't. Expand

If you played the original then you know what you're getting into. The QOL improvements, especially in the first game are very appreciated. The Graphics are good and the music and sound is good as well. The combat was updated for the first game as well which made it a lot better IMO.

For those who have not played the original however, the game is a really fun, sci-fi drama adventure

For those who have not played the original however, the game is a really fun, sci-fi drama adventure with interesting characters and worlds to explore. The gameplay is a third-person shooter with light RPG elements. The second and third game are VERY light on the RPG elements, keep that in mind. If you're looking for a fun action game with a good story, characters and fun world to explore look no further than the Mass Effect trilogy.

However, to be fair, even though I love the First game and like the second, the third game is rather lackluster and the DLCs for 2 and 3 are both underwhelming on the length and depth side. Also, another gripe of mine is the 'morality' decisions in the game sometimes do not make any sense. If you can ignore these things and horrid ending of the 3rd game then you will have a genuinely good time.

Mass Effect was the (good) Star Wars for video games. It created a universe full of interesting characters, stories, history, conflicts, alien species, politics, technology, ideologies and cultures. The lore was so good that I had many good discussions with friends and read many articles in the Mass Effect Wiki. You have also a codex in each game where you can look up things for more details. Then they had a unique idea for the Mass Effect games. You can import your decisions into the next games. This was as interesting as impactful. Many of us had again so good discussions and arguments what the best course of action was or which outcome the decisions will have. There were a lot of mayor and some minor decisions that gave you different results in the follow up games. Then came the conclusion for the trilogy that shatter everything. I mentioned in my reviews for the individual games that I wanted to replay all of them to get my favourite (and satisfying) outcomes. Now this is not enjoyable. Again to be fair the journey was beautiful and well worth my time while the end undoes nearly everything. Technical they overhauled the games and it hits more than it misses. I shorten it with you get what you expect. Overall I still feel a strong disappointment for the ending as this could be the best trilogy in gaming. I give a 5/10 and say that I loved the games. It started off okay but kept on getting better over time. I did all the side quests, most tbh were a chore to get through apart from the DLC one. Your best option is to skip those but I wanted to try it anyway.

I played with Wrex and Liara the entire way, was probably the best option as Wrex and the Krogan seemed like the most interesting and tragic race, and Wrex’s clash in Virmir was solid. Liara was solid too with her knowledge of the Protheans, which is useful in Ilos.

The lore and story behind Reapers vs Protheans were solid too. Nice twist with Citadel being a relay. Saren by the end was pretty compelling too, he saw himself as the hero, and he felt justified to help the reapers, so that Organics may survive, but by the end you realise he's been indoctrinated.

I played the game for 30 hours, it might have paced better at 20 hours. The graphics and animations don't age well at all, pretty bad for its time too tbh. Sometimes the animations and movements of characters in this game are soo bad that it's funny. Voice acting can get rough at times. But for other characters like Wrex and Saren, their voice acting is good. The game needs a lot more quality-of-life improvements:
    - You can't see what you did on a planet until you land.
    - After you complete a planet, it should tell you if you did so and if there are any missing objectives I could still do.
    - Icons on the map and inconsistent too. Sometimes an x means you did the objective while other times it's a point of interest.

But it's compensated with its compelling way of telling the story in main missions and giving you pivotal decisions to make. Also, its worldbuilding of the different races was spot on.

    Mass Effect 2 - 7/10
Mass Effect 1 to me was better. The only solid loyalty missions were Mordin’s and Grunt’s.

    Loyalty Mission Reviews
    Grunt - 9/10
I already found Krogans really interesting so seeing their homeworld tuchanka I knew was gonna be fun. Seeing Wrex, the shaman and others react to Grunts predicament created amazing dialogue exchanges. Krogans, especially Wrex and Grunt are Peak in Mass Effect!
    Mordin - 8/10
There was a pretty good debate between Shepherd and Mordin. Normally Shepherd is more passive but this time he felt like he had a strong stance and so did Mordin, leading to clashing ideals. Seeing the ramifications of the Genophage and seeing Mordin still try to rationalise it was compelling.
But then Mordins student was a direct foil to Mordin, and I loved it! He had way better counterpoints than Shephard. The exchange was very grey, where honestly it looked like the student was the good guy, even though the testing method was questionable.
    Garrus - 7/10
His was good cuz I saved Solidus. Not too sure if it would have been good otherwise, I exhausted all dialogue to the point it subverted expectations where Solidus was a good guy.
    Liara - 7/10
The Shadow Broker was anticlimactic. But the DLC improves when Shepherd vents his frustration to Liara on Normandy.
    Miranda - 7/10
Solid mission with sweet ending of savings Mirandas sis.
    Samara - 7/10
Gameplay was fun, at least it wasn't just a shooter or trailing mission.
    Kasumi - 6/10
Really nice and short mission. Didn't expect a stealth infiltration mission in ME. But I couldn't care less about Kasumi.
    Jacob - 6/10
Would have been better if we knew more concretely what his dad was thinking.
    Jack - 6/10
    Pretty predictable. Nothing interesting.
    Thane - 5/10
The kid and his issues towards his father were not developed enough. The tailing mission gameplay was boring and basic. Disappointing since Thane seemed pretty interesting. Especially his 1-to-1s, those are really damn good.
    Zaed - 5/10
I don't even know the guy lol. The revenge plot with Garrus was done better.
    Tali - 5/10
Boring characters and dialogue before boarding Aleria. Tali's dad being the culprit was very predictable.

I don't know why this one is highly regarded, not much of a suicide mission if everyone lives, plus it was just 3 short submissions and the final boss was dull. ME1 lore about Saren, Protheans and Reapers was more compelling than ME2’s collectors being Prothean. Plus all we really learned is that Harbinger is coming by the end. Nothing I did felt like it really mattered tbh.

    ME3 - 7/10
ME3 somehow is even more linear than ME2. The ending of the synthesis of organics and robots was goofy. But the other endings were not any better. At least they had the Genophage cure in this game. The sequences for that were top-tier. But then it was taken over by the Qurain storyline which was not even nearly as good.

    Trilogy
Not too sure why anyone would say this is a masterclass of storytelling. It does have high peaks but also has very low and persistent peaks too. Your best off watching Dr Who instead.

Then I played ME2 and my expectations were high for the third game and they almost got true.
The Legendary Edition brought back massive memories of the locations and various characters but it reminded me of the story faults: in ME1 (which is were 90% of the work went into) qe get to choose who to save on Virmire (Ashley or Kaidan) but in ME2 there is still only one cameo scene with them and a letter if they were your Love Interest only to have a bullrushed development in ME3 without much player feedback afterwards. The Mass Effect Trilogy is incredible. The overarching story and its characters are excellent, and each one was better than the last. I wasn’t sure if these games would hold up in the current environment, but they absolutely do. They’re still worth playing, I recommend them, and to anyone about to jump in — play at a slower pace. Do not rush through. Explore everything they have to offer and relish in their richness.
