Not a Bioware game. It's a cheap outsourced knock off. It looks like a Rolex in the store, but once you play you realize it says Rolodex and the gold peels off.

I love the ME franchise. Mass Effect 2 is actually one of the best games I've ever played... and even though I got ME Andromeda on Day 1, I decided to wait as much as possible until it was patched, since it was a very troubled launch.

Decided it was time to check it out. Sadly, I could not stand it after a few hours. Call it something else, please. This ugly mess is not Mass Effect.

Boring, uninspired, uninteresting, never engaging, never fun, I was getting almost nothing from it. Ok, the combat was kind of fun, but I did not have the patience or interest to go through all the rest to get to it. Gave up.

It is a sad thing that Andromeda is ME's swan song. This game is a mess.

The script is the biggest letdown of all; every line feels forced as if the characters are stranded in some kind of sci-fi sitcom. The jokes come across like Twitter conversations. I'd rather the human race blow up on their way to the Andromeda galaxy than survive if they all act this dense. Where is the impact, when does the gravity of the situation make everyone cut the quips and start acting normal? Even Ryder's dad's death causes him/ her to smirk. The game's myriad technical issues and prevalent lack of polish come into play, but as I said earlier, the script is really the worst thing about this one, and it is BAD. I've seen games on Newgrounds with better scripts than this AAA game. Expand

I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours in now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting character, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like a whole bunch of different people worked on different parts of the game and failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

Starting out it goes wrong real quick. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about. Male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the pre-set CC faces are one step above abominations. One you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very (think 2002) simple CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the pre-set face.

The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately, and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past.

Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up no mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original devs dumped it for a reason, it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating and mining for things, we'll I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using to see the game with. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better? Hopefully with time they can iron out and fix much of this, it's just unfortunate that they chose to go down a path that attempts to make Mass Effect just another sandbox game instead of narrative masterpiece.

For me, Andromeda simply isn't worth it, however. Not because of the graphics, because they are actually pretty damn good. Note I said 'graphics', not 'animations' - two different things. The animations DO suck. They're actually hilariously bad, considering this is a AAA game, and evidence of yet another title rushed out the door by a studio evidently pressured by EA to do so.

But the animation isn't the killer for me. No, it's a really, really poor narrative which plays out as 14-year-old girl Mass Effect fan fiction, combined with the overwhelming feeling of sheer boredom in the tired, stale and hugely dated game mechanics.

Cover is automatic, but the placement of objects you can hide behind is the real crime - they are hap hazard and often don't contextually make sense. The third-person shooting is generic and dull - functional but tiresome. The obvious and totally unnecessary padding in the search for resources to craft items is terrible game design and should never have made it past QA.

And the cherry on the cake; frequent frame drops. Because a AAA game with smooth performance is apparently too much to ask these days.

It has its' moments and the scenery is jaw-dropping at times, but every time it hits a high note, it balances it out with either a sensationally low one or simply sustained sessions of tedium.

There's a reason I only played four hours before writing this review, and that's because I simply didn't want to play any more of it. When a game makes you feel that way, it's game over at that point.

Thank everything for the used games market - this is going to a new 'lucky' owner shortly!

I have enjoyed aspects of the game and nowhere near the level I would of expected. Many areas are without proper polish and the formula doesn't seem to have improved. At one point I am looking at an image of the universe that is flat (obvious skybox), poor detail and ruins the atmosphere; this sums up the game..

I realize there are tremendous risks in producing a game of this size and scope but once again I find myself playing a game which I imagine was designed for the stockholder. I wish triple A developers would stop and realize they can turn a profit without compromising a game's heart soul. Double down on creativity instead of pushing earlier releases and generating hype. After a few hours of Andromeda, I couldn't even bring myself to care enough to keep going. I didn’t care for the main characters whether I play as female or male, crew is completely unlikable and lame, story is uninspiring, to put it in simple terms: Chemistry didn't happen. There is nothing Mass Effect about Andromeda except in name and the "sci-fi" theme.
    Big disappointment.

First of all, I have to say that the artists did a good job with this game. Music and art are synchronous with Mass Effect.

Everything else related to gameplay, and cinematography though? Very poorly executed. There are a lot of bugs and technical issues. The dialogue wheels literally are "split second" choices, not even enough time to read what you are about to say. This feels like

Even for my masochistic character ( almost 40h in game) its still too much to breathe this out.

Alot is missing from originals too like races, weapons, having meaningful choices and consequences, squadmate loadouts, and renegade/paragon system and there isn't enough new to make up for it either. They even ruined special anmo along with biotic and armor piercing not even in game too. Game is also very buggy and lacks polish along with alot of what made mass effect and bioware rpgs special in first place.

In Mass effect Andromeda Good luck finding white males and males period in any powerful or meaningful role in game you quickly find that all mission givers and characters that are in power and meaningful in game are overwhelming female with the lesser being minorities or aliens if male at all. While White males are nowhere to be found in game except as cannon fodder or for mockery. This game not only is too extremely politically correct but ractist against white males and white people in general to the point that its too obvious and sickening to loyal fans who love the franchise and have been loyal since it started.

There is diversity done right like mass effect 1 through 3 and then there is ME andromeda not the way you want to do diversity in games as people play games to get away from their personal lives and have fun. The designer of game clearly wanted to get political and personal on a level that is bad for business given fact that majority of gamers will be of male gender to begin with and most likely a good amount white too when it comes to the RPG genre too not smart at all for a business.

There are a lot of problems with this game. I could go on and on about the flaws with this game and why these flaws matter and how Bioware/EA royally screwed the pooch here and how there is no system in this entire game that isn't without some sort of major flaw. But here's the thing. When you're actually playing the game...when you're not busy staring at a loading screen or a transition screen or rolling your eyes at the god awful animation/voice acting/writing/etc, you're liking having fun.

And that's what's important, right? Fun? That's why we play video games? To have fun? You WILL have fun with this game. Whether it's you + 3 friends getting some coop multiplayer going or you out alone (cause your AI companions have died in the first 3 seconds of combat...again) against the hordes in single player, you will almost certainly be having a really really good time.

In fact, you'll like be having a 7.5/10 sort of good time. If I had to compare MEA to another game, I'd compare it to Fallout 4. It was horribly disappointing for a lot of the diehard fans, there were a LOT of serious problems, but, at the end of the day, it was still a fun game worth the purchase.

So if it's a 7.5/10 sort of game, why am I giving it a 4/10? Why am I writing a negative review? Well, two reasons. The first is that, despite their response since launch (which has been quite good), Bioware and EA behaved AWFULLY before launch. Some of the devs behind this game have acted in a way that would have gotten others in their field fired in a heartbeat. Truly awful behavior and truly reprehensible actions towards their paying customers and long time fan base.

But more importantly, the second reason is that there is a sizable group of Bioware fans that absolutely will not hear ANY criticism of this game or Bioware as a company no matter how legit or reasonable said criticism is. Even the slightest break from the hive mind of "Perfect game 11/10!" is met with hate and scorn. It's **** disgusting. These people give gamers in general a bad name and they are 100% responsible for the state of the industry and **** like MEA. They are the reason this game is so subpar, because EA/Bioware knew they could farm out the fourth game in their biggest franchise to some B team that's never produced a full game before and no matter what quality the game ended up being, there would be enough of this type of fan to lap it up and defend the game regardless of criticism that it'd be a success.

So yeah, 7.5/10 if you're JUST looking at the gameplay. 4/10 when you look at the bigger picture, everything included.

Long time Bioware rpg fan KTOR 1/2, DA series, Mass Effect 1-3. Sorely disappointed and disillusioned. If you like action heavy multiplayer games then you'll probably enjoy this. If you like story rich "Role Playing Games" with freedom to create your own take on the protagonist and that has depth, engaging, compelling characters etc. then look elsewhere.

    Pro's: decent action/combat.

Pro's: decent action/combat. Cons: Underwhelming Story, Dull characters, cringe-worthy infantile dialogue. Really for pew, pew multiplayer action fans. Had to laugh when somebody here said it was like Blasto from the original series. Forgot about Blasto, but your not wrong my friend. I should go.

I am torn about this game. Some Parts of the story and setting are really fun others just completely miss the mark.
Same thing goes with graphics, a lot of the panoramas are look breathtaking but then there are the issues with facial animation and the clunky body animation.
I personally would have preferred if the game focused more on the political problems that must be in an migration

I personally would have preferred if the game focused more on the political problems that must be in an migration into already settled territory. (Different factions in the expedition forces as well as the natives give so much potential) It is touched upon in a lot of side content but the main content clearly is the fight that is already in the Helios-Cluster.
The fighting in the game also has two sides. On one side I like the more pro active approach you can take with the versatile (if stale) character development and new found movement. But Teammate and Enemy AI as well as a flat progression for "the pathfinder" makes it pale against other recent action-rpgs.

Without the technical problems of quests that get stuck and CTDs I would have given it a 6/10 but with the current bugs I had to subtract some points.

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
