Probably worst big-budget video game of 2020. It's almost sad that developers still think it's okay to make trash like this. Not recommending.

There really is not much to keep your attentions after a few hours. The story ties in a multiplayer experience that is repetitive and dull. The story isn’t isn’t very entertaining either so this may the most “meh” game I’ve played since the PS2 generation.

It feels like a game created with monetary gain first and artistic expression second.

Imagine if we were given a single player only marvel’s avengers game that allowed you free reign over the entire city of new york in the same vein as marvel’s spiderman, receiving incoming transmissions from the other avengers of thugs robbing banks, enemies like loki, taskmaster, norman osbourne or even thanos running amok and causing chaos. Being able to switch back and forth between a wide array of avengers as you aim to accomplish those missions, deciding between doing the mission alone or even being able to call in other avengers to assist you if it gets too difficult. Don’t you think that would have been a way better avengers game than what we got? It can be fun at times but with this repetitive structure, it gets old fast and that’s disappointing

Believe the reviews. 4/10 is generous. This Game. This **** game. It seemed like there was no way it could lose. But here we go, watch it fail on every point. Look this game up in the dictionary under Squandered Opportunities.

The worst part of this game is the story. Instead of playing as the Avengers you play as a new character trojaned into the main slot, a character you never heard of and don't care about. I call her Manhands, based on her power of making her hands gigantic. She is an unknown wannabe who spends most of the game fawning over a group she calls “the resistance". She is the center around which revolves a shallow, hamfisted story as boring as the gameplay it accompanies.

In the first 40 minutes prepare to be lectured heavily with SJW cliches, the message delivered awkwardly and without finesse. Rote repetition of chanting mantras that were played out in 2019 take the place where an Avengers story should be. Awful story. Awful, awful story without craft or storytelling expertise. It just keeps getting worse the longer you play. This story is not fire. It's not awesome. It’s not intriguing, it doesn’t draw you in. The terrible cringe of the writing won’t grow on you. IT SUCKS! Hard.

The gameplay is no better. Remember PS4 Spider-Man? You really got the feeling you were spidey with access to his unique movements and moveset. You don’t get that feeling in Avengers. No matter which hero you choose, they all feel kind of the same. What would have been great is a well designed level, where each hero’s unique abilities allowed them access to different sections of the level or approach challenges in a different way. Even Banjo-kazooie on N64 got that concept. But that concept is not understood in Avengers where everyone moves, plays and feels pretty much the same.

The levels are mainly nothing but basic hallways, sometimes pretty, but you can’t escape you are basically in a square box. There was an old hulk game on Playstation 1 that had more hulk-like feels than hulk in Avengers. Square square triangle. Square square triangle. Over and over. And over and over and over. The longer you play this game the worse it gets. This game is the worst kind of grind, a boring and inane mashfest. A fact only made worse by the potential their exciting characters promised, a promise undelivered by the devolopers.

It’s important to understand before you buy this that even though the game is called Avengers, familiar characters take a backseat to SJW inspired Kamala who is the center of the main storyline. THE AVENGERS ARE ONLY BACKGROUND CHARACTERS. This is a Kamala Khan game. Which would be fine if that’s what you bought, but you bought an Avengers game. You know damn well you didn’t buy this game for this spotlighted little chick, you wanted Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Widow. The stupid main character Kamala robbed you of that game. Even when you do get control another character, she pipes in constantly with annoying and disruptive chatter to spoil the mood. Seriously, Kamala Khan is one of the most irritating and unwelcome characters ever invented.

Random villains show up randomly, just to pad the roster. Think it will be cool to play a game with all those old familiar villains? It won't be. Pointless plot structure. The Avengers themselves, when you do see them look less like a movie or comic book counterpart and more like millenial day at the cosplay convention. Except cosplayers would look much better. These soy-soaked Avengers-style placeholders don't look heroic. Maybe it's a blessing you don't really get to play as them that often.
Love microtransactions? so does marvel/square-enix! Really really love them! A lot! Don’t worry about it though, after playing this crapfest a bit you won’t be back to purchase more.

This is by far the worst Square-enix game I have ever played. I wanted to love it. But the idiots that made this just weren't going to let that happen. The fact that they are locking out reviews after the game has been made playable is proof they don’t want the verdict on this game revealed. It’s bad. I can’t believe this is from Square, it is a game so far below their normal standards they should be ashamed. Go ahead, don't believe it. After all, you like the Avengers. So did I, friend. So did I. Don't cry you weren't warned. This is the worst game I have played all year, the biggest disappointment of 2020.

Marvel's Avengers game is not bad, but neither excellent. The campaign over all is pretty good, and the story is well developed and en-thrilling. The creators really put a lot of effort in making the gameplay mechanics feel real and powerful, and the connexion developed between Kamala, the player and all the Avengers is pretty well made and emotionally involving. The creators really put a lot of effort in making the gameplay mechanics feel real and powerful, and the connexion developed between Kamala, the player and all the Avengers is pretty well made and emotionally involving. But at 2020, with predecessors such as the Batman Arkham trilogy, or Marvel's Spider-Man it's unacceptable to have a game with so much lags, so many inconsistencies at the time of exploring and such a repetitive mechanic when exploring the world trough the side missions. Batman showed how to make collectibles fun to collect with little puzzles, and it seems that Square Enix tried so hard to nail a new collectible system, that ended up being boring and repetitive.

The world exploration is also an issue. There's just so much limitations to how to do things, how to access areas and how to interact with the world, in Marvel's Avengers the world is not alive with you. The world is static and does not interact with the player in ways that make me feel that my actions have any impact. These kind of level design was ok at first, but comes in the end as an over all boring experience. Rather than leveling up different characters and feeling that the world reacts to me and compelling me to further play and develop the rest of the Avengers, I rather get my hands on another game that really reacts to my character and its growth.

I am a fan of superheroes and its games. I believe anyone who enjoys a good story and the feeling of power in a combat system is going to really enjoy this game, but I cannot stop from wondering how much better it could have been if further development on the world was made. If every character had diversity in its characteristics that allowed me to plan my actions in a stealth approach vs a head to head combat, and that made me feel unlimited in my interactions with the world and with my team. It wasn't. bad first effort, it was just a disappointing one when compared to what the superheroes gaming industry is doing nowadays.

Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So,Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? So, when I heard Crystal Dynamics was working on this, I thought “well, these guys have had a lot of success with the ‘Tomb Raider’ reboots, so I bet they’ll do great with ‘Avengers!’” And even with the mixed early reception, I continued to hope the game would defy the odds and blow us out of the water. And this is why I don’t get my hopes up anymore because, when I do, they tend to get crushed. Case in point, “Marvel’s Avengers.”
In terms of the few positives, the game’s writing is solid. The story isn’t the greatest thing ever, but I liked the characters (especially Kamala Khan) and I felt like the voice acting was solid enough. Also, I thought the game’s concepts had some potential early on. I immediately took note of each Avengers’ “quirk” and felt that would be a good point for them to build off of, and it got me excited for the rest of the game.
However, the game becomes a crashing bore once it throws you into the “we’re clearly trying to rip off ‘Destiny’ or ‘Anthem’” world where the mission structure feels so lackluster. While the game is more cinematic and story-driven than such game, the mission structure reeks of the “live service” titles it’s clearly trying to emulate, and it almost feels like a blatant attempt to rope you into the multiplayer. While playing the game, I kept feeling like the campaign worked in service to the multiplayer, but not the other way around, and that’s a shame because, if they focused on a single-player experience, this would’ve been much better. But instead, the game structurally fell flat, as did the combat. While I liked each hero having their own “quirk,” the combat got stale incredibly fast, and it felt like each Avengers’ “quirk” was utilized as well as it could’ve been. Also, wow, this game runs horribly. The frame rate is absolutely atrocious with numerous bad dips, and the glitches...oh man, the glitches. I had more than a few times getting locked out of missions because the game glitched or something (I even got locked out of one of the final boss fights in the game because of glitches), and it just felt like the game lacked any form of polish.
Yeah, “Marvel’s Avengers” is a soul-crushing disappointment. I wanted to love the game, but Crystal Dynamics really dropped the ball on this one. If the team had focused their efforts on crafting a great single-player experience, this game could’ve been a worthwhile adventure, but instead, it just doesn’t stick the landing. I genuinely can’t recommend it to anyone, though if you‘re feeling that curious...just watch a walkthrough online. You'll have saved your money, and you'll walk away from it with the assurance that you really aren't missing all that much.

This like some corporate suit looked at games, saw what was popular in Fortnite and tried to implement it with another popular franchise. The result is nothing short of a disastrous disappointment. I think they should had more content and fixed some issues before release. In this state it looks like they want to use the Avengers franchise and its appeal to just get extra money out of gamers. The story is not related to the movies and starts on A-Day which is a celebration of the Avengers getting a new headquarter and a helicarrier powered by a Terrigen crystal (Mutagen that activates random superpowers in humans that have Inhuman genes / ancestors). Because of some tragic events the crystal is destroyed, a Terrigen mist is created and the Avengers disbanded. Years later superheroes are treated as criminals while an organization named A.I.M. (comic fans will say uh oh now) is tasked in policing and healing the victims of the “Inhuman Disease”. You start as Kamala Khan on her heroes journey. The story itself is decent but some events / twists you can see coming from miles away and there are many out of character moments or characters feel like lesser versions of the originals. Kamala Khan itself is a great character and I like that they chose her (She won me over in all the years). Later you get more characters to use with a good variety. However the gameplay is mixed. There are some annoying bugs, crashes and the AI is not really good. The missions have not much variety and they should have more villains as enemies. You notice the games as a service approach. It is a role model for repetitive gameplay. The loot is also unrewarding as it is the character customization. I expected more and most fans agree. Then there is the monetization. There is so much stuff to buy and there were paid gaming passes for each character. This is a shameless approach and there is no hiding or defending this. The interest for the game is already dwindling towards zero and I read that Square-Enix had lost somewhere between 48 to 65 million dollars from different sources. They also failed in adding more content as soon as possible to stop the downwards spiral as the next (content) DLC was delayed. Even as fan of Square-Enix I said they deserved it. Overall this is more of a money grab than a videogame. Avoid it as it is not worth your time and especially your money. Expand

Marvel's Avengers has some weird quirks to it. On one hand, it can be somewhat fun as a beat-em-up style game, but on the other, it can be a frustratingly micro-transaction-filled experience, with a game design that doesn't fit the context of the game. When I first played this game I was hoping for level designs similar to that of Spider-Man PS4, and the Arkham games, but unfortunatelyMarvel's Avengers has some weird quirks to it. On one hand, it can be somewhat fun as a beat-em-up style game, but on the other, it can be a frustratingly micro-transaction-filled experience, with a game design that doesn't fit the context of the game. When I first played this game I was hoping for level designs similar to that of Spider-Man PS4, and the Arkham games, but unfortunately this game is most similar to that of Destiny and other games where your goal is to grab loot. Which is a weird style of game to rip off for an Avengers game, but even then this game fails at making the loot useful. I never felt like the loot was actually worth picking up, and overall the base of the online component of the game was just... useless to be honest. Now, many people have been saying that this game has a good enough story to warrant a 6 or 7/10, but I don't agree with those people at all. The story isn't bad, but introduces things in a weird way. Like most of the story just kinda shows up, and if you don't read a lot of comics I can see how some of the story can be really confusing. I also feel like this game should've had more villains and boss fights in it, but it only has 2 supervillains. Which is pretty underwhelming. Of course the main problem with the game is the bugs. I have experienced so many glitches that made me restart checkpoints, and tons of frame rate dips, as well as pop-in, the technical issues that were shown in this game were proof in my opinion that this game should've been delayed and better tested before release. Overall, I had some fun with this game, but it wasn't a lot, and I feel really disappointed by this game in general. If I was given the choice I'd probably give it like 2.75/10, but I think 3/10 is fine enough, if you don't care about technical problems, and just want a basic button masher with mediocre combat... I don't know why you would, but I would say that this an okay game for you, but if you're looking for a high quality marvel game... well this ain't it, Overall it was a very disappointing experience Expand

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
