This is the very first review I have ever written and it really pisses me of that the game turned out the way it did.... :-( Expand

There really is not much to keep your attentions after a few hours. The story ties in a multiplayer experience that is repetitive and dull. The story isn’t isn’t very entertaining either so this may the most “meh” game I’ve played since the PS2 generation.

It feels like a game created with monetary gain first and artistic expression second.

Imagine if we were given a single player only marvel’s avengers game that allowed you free reign over the entire city of new york in the same vein as marvel’s spiderman, receiving incoming transmissions from the other avengers of thugs robbing banks, enemies like loki, taskmaster, norman osbourne or even thanos running amok and causing chaos. Being able to switch back and forth between a wide array of avengers as you aim to accomplish those missions, deciding between doing the mission alone or even being able to call in other avengers to assist you if it gets too difficult. Don’t you think that would have been a way better avengers game than what we got? It can be fun at times but with this repetitive structure, it gets old fast and that’s disappointing

Marvel's Avengers game is not bad, but neither excellent. The campaign over all is pretty good, and the story is well developed and en-thrilling. The creators really put a lot of effort in making the gameplay mechanics feel real and powerful, and the connexion developed between Kamala, the player and all the Avengers is pretty well made and emotionally involving. The creators really put a lot of effort in making the gameplay mechanics feel real and powerful, and the connexion developed between Kamala, the player and all the Avengers is pretty well made and emotionally involving. But at 2020, with predecessors such as the Batman Arkham trilogy, or Marvel's Spider-Man it's unacceptable to have a game with so much lags, so many inconsistencies at the time of exploring and such a repetitive mechanic when exploring the world trough the side missions. Batman showed how to make collectibles fun to collect with little puzzles, and it seems that Square Enix tried so hard to nail a new collectible system, that ended up being boring and repetitive.

The world exploration is also an issue. There's just so much limitations to how to do things, how to access areas and how to interact with the world, in Marvel's Avengers the world is not alive with you. The world is static and does not interact with the player in ways that make me feel that my actions have any impact. These kind of level design was ok at first, but comes in the end as an over all boring experience. Rather than leveling up different characters and feeling that the world reacts to me and compelling me to further play and develop the rest of the Avengers, I rather get my hands on another game that really reacts to my character and its growth.

I am a fan of superheroes and its games. I believe anyone who enjoys a good story and the feeling of power in a combat system is going to really enjoy this game, but I cannot stop from wondering how much better it could have been if further development on the world was made. If every character had diversity in its characteristics that allowed me to plan my actions in a stealth approach vs a head to head combat, and that made me feel unlimited in my interactions with the world and with my team. It wasn't. bad first effort, it was just a disappointing one when compared to what the superheroes gaming industry is doing nowadays.

Most of the skins in this game are just repaints. Hulk doesn't feel like the Hulk when playing as him. The combat in this game doesn't feel like it was a primary focus when creating this project. The lines and gameplay can get pretty repetitive and sometimes annoying. Not a great, good or bad game, just OK...

The Good: The graphics are gorgeous. The combat is fun enough to keep me engaged and each character feels unique and fun to play. It's fun to smash things as the Hulk, fly around and blast things as Iron Man and beat people up with stretchy arms and legs as Ms. Marvel. There are plenty of missions and quests to take part in, so lack of content doesn't seem to be a problem thus far. Also,The Good: The graphics are gorgeous. There are plenty of missions and quests to take part in, so lack of content doesn't seem to be a problem thus far. Also, despite what you may have heard monetization isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be... provided you have some patience. has a battle pass system (called Challenge Cards). Each of the 6... let's call them OG Avengers has a free battle pass that will award you with credits. These credits can be used to purchase premium battle passes that (If I'm understanding correctly) will come with whatever new characters will come at a later date. So, in theory, if you have the patience to grind out the battle passes you never have to spend any money if you don't want to. Also, unlike some other games with battle passes these never expire or rotate so you can take as long as you want to complete them. Would I rather have no battle passes and just get all of the cosmetics for free right out of the gate? Yes. Is this system as bad as most Youtubers are making it out to be? No.

The Bad: Spider-Man is a Playstation exclusive. I don't think I need to explain why that's bad. Kamala Khan is just flat out annoying. As much as I love her powers and kit, I just can't stand her personality. I wish Crystal Dynamic had chosen any other character to be the main character of this game. If they wanted a young, new superhero why not use Miles Morales? Yeah, he's Spider-Man but he's not Peter Parker, so I doubt Sony could complain too much about his inclusion in non-Playstation versions of the game. Though to be fair, Sony doesn't have the rights to video game or comic book versions of Spider-Man.(Look it up if you don't believe me.) While the graphics and character models are good, it's clear that Crystal Dynamic/Square Enix is trying so hard to make these character models look like the MCU actors and actresses without actual having to use their likenesses. Which leads to this weird disconnect where you know Banner is supposed to be Mark Ruffalo but isn't. Cap is supposed to be Chris Evans but isn't, etc. Also, while I enjoy the combat, the timing for perfect dodges and parries seem to be a little iffy. Sometimes I can dodge and parry with easy, other times it feels like I'm getting hit even though I pressed the dodge or parry button. This is especially noticeable on Hulk. I don't know if each character has their own unique dodge/parry timer but it feels like Hulk is the hardest one to get right. Speaking of Hulk he feels very weak at least at low levels. He just doesn't seem to do much damage nor can he tank a bunch of hits. Despite the fact that I defended the battle pass system as being relatively fair, the prices of individual cosmetic items in the in game shop are ridiculous and should be lowered in my opinion.

The Ugly: Did I mention that Spider-man is a Playstation exclusive? The performance and optimization of this game is just atrocious. Here are my specs:
    R9-3900X
    RTX 2070 Super
    16GB 3600mHz
With these specs I have to turn down the settings to Low to get a stable framerate at 1440p. Anything above low will result in regular drops in framerate down to single digit numbers for prolonged periods of time. The framerate at low is so unstable one minute I'll be getting over 100 fps and then it'll drop below 50 fps the next. So far in the day that I've been playing this game I've had 2 crashes. One crash direct to desktop and one that froze the game so hard that I had to force close the game. I've read reports on the discussion page of people losing progress because of corrupted save files. That's right an always online live service game has local save files. So expect cheaters to find away to manipulate game files sooner rather than later. Apparently, Steam Cloud saves were added today (September 4, 2020) right be launch, so disregard everything I said about local files. Also, there seems to be a memory leak that will cause framerates to drop to unplayable levels after a few hours regardless of graphics settings requiring a restart of the game to fix.

Final Verdict: I am enjoying this game and at it's core this game is fun. However, I cannot in good conscience recommend this game until:
    1) Spider-Man is in the PC version.
    2) The many technical issues this game has are fixed.
Until then do not buy this game.

It's a very fun game to play alone or with friends, but it's nowhere near "similar" games like Arkham Series or the newest Spiderman. That is because it's NOT a similar game. Avengers is a linear game with no open world and a bunch of bugs (which I'm not taking into account because they are fixable). It has no replayability and the story is barely there.

And what drives me insane is the pure greed of this £54 title, not only do you have to pay for the game there are pay walls on cosmetics in game currency to get better gear to which I think is rather appalling considering the game isn't really that expansive in terms of level design and gear sets. What sets this game apart from other looter games is that the combat is really fun it does lose some of its charm as the game progresses but none the less fun.
If I was to buy the game again I would wait for a price from to about £30 I think that is the most I would pay if I had waited.

    - The main story is REALLY enjoyable and takes you on a great journey. Kamala Kahn is cool, and voice acting spot on!

    - Graphics are lovely, and look forward to seeing rendering on nextgen / PC (once bugs are fixed)

    - All heroes feel very unique. Which lends to replayability.

    - The different hero skins, cosmetics and take-downs help give you a range of ways to customise your heros. Frustrating: - Loading times - Running around the hub/hellicarrier, slowly chasing vendors
    - Inability to view friends' inventories - UI / Gear screen moves very slowly - Lack of enemy variety (you mosly fight robots)
    - Limited bosses - Fighting lots of enemies often turns into a big mosh-pit, which makes creative fighting hard to pull off
    - Level design and game modes are limited and feel very repetitive after a while Future concerns:
That the memorable thing about an Avengers game—the thing that keeps peopel playing—is loot boxes/grinding, is a crying shame. Marvel has such amazing stories, the mythos the lore is filled with great stpries. But post-campaign the story is lost to the loot grind! I worry that Crystal Dynamics, have missed a MASSIVE opportunity to be remembered for years to come, as the game that brought the comics to life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A very interesting story but yet fails to comprehend what gameplay is all about. It wasnt good butit wasnt bad, had an open world style 'mechanic' that lets you do other missions in the same areas, giving you a silly Destiny vibe to get more legendary gear. They also involve a mission to visit other side missions to gather things for the final mision which in fact, de-rails the main story. NOTE TO DEVS: STOP DOING THIS! IT COMPLETELY HALTS THE PLOT!

The idea of having objectives meant for multiplayer in a singleplayer reminds us that INSOMNIAC are still superior in the marvel superhero game genre.

The game seems to stray off the main character further in as you unlock new heroes, allowing you to be completely neglectful of Kamala, which in my opinion is a well written character which was forgotten just to feed the interest of people only interested in the other heroes. The voice acting is alright, it seems to be that they are constantly tired of talking as there is never ending dialogue throughout.

Some missions offer skins relating back to the Avengers movies, which dont unlock those skins for you if you complete them as it is bugged. Some maps glitch out and cause you to go through the floor or building. The cutscenes often stutter ruining immersion. The companion AI doesnt seem to be targeted much but you do so they are just there to help when you are downed just to revive you.

The heroes also have some unbalanced powers which can cleave through mini bosses like they're childsplay:

Black widows guns seem to laser beam bosses so you dont have to go in raw and no rubber

Captain America is soo underpowered his super ability is the only ability that can do some real damage and you will HAVE to use him on the final boss which is just annoying.

Iron man same as black widow his range attacks deal more damage than the melee.

The only good heroes to play for a satisfying game is Hulk, thor and kamala. You will not find the other heroes any more satisying than hulks brute strength, Thors "DONK" from the hammer and his ability to weigh enemies down by throwing it at them and kamalas stretchy arms.

If you chose a hero that can fly you are going to at least beat 80% of the mission just flying over all emeies and obstacles to reach the end to finish it reducing gameplay hours.

The emeies seem repetitive, showing different enemies but they all have the same strategy which is to just charge in and hit as much as possible until they die.

Do i mention its a superhero Destiny game?

Overall im going to have to give this a solid 6/10 for its story and characters alone as it lacks on everything else and fails to fix issues it shouldnt have on release. I wanted to save the city and have an interesting protag, not do chores for loot.

Some parts of the game are definitely cool and it seems the cool stuff was finished early, but when it came to making an actual video game, somehow Square Enix... with their burgeoning market cap, could not find a way to release a finished game. I have absurd capture video of terrible, experience ruining bugs, from cut scenes... on a PS4 Pro. Even if you enjoyed the story, the terrible coding job leads to cut scenes with Steve Rogers eyeballs popping from his skull and his lips, seemingly, melted together; rendering anything thing he's saying as stupid looking.

I ended up lowering the difficulty to Easy once I had to do a full solo Iron Man mission. The level design for the solo mission was just too stupid when you have no skills unlocked. The game goes from sorta fun, to fun, to broken game design that makes you want to never support video games with your money again.

And on top of everything, the main mission story barely cuts together just like fights don't cut together with cut scenes. For $20, this is a "maybe" purchase; but $60 or more for this is an insult to gamers. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game as a service with the kind of robust story campaign with side missions worth $60. If companies like Square Enix want to make games like this, with short pathetic campaigns; charge $20.

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
