If I were to write a short summary, it would be: "Anthem, but with a better single player story."

The single player story is decent enough. Typical superhero fare, better than amateur fanfiction, passable as a story in its own right. Had the rest of the game been this way, it probably would have been much better. Instead, this game is like Jekyll and Hyde (or Banner and Hulk): Two disparate experiences that only have strands of similarities.

Once you get through the relatively short campaign, you hit the live service grind and, well, that's where all the Anthem comparisons begin. Sluggish, buggy combat. Boring, generic locales. Uninspired gameplay loop and reward designs. Braindead, predictable AI, both enemy and ally. Buggy textures and models. Broken matchmaking and multiplayer. Framerate drops. Shoddy camera. SYSTEM CRASHES.

The game tries too hard to be a live service game, throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you -- but they forgot to include rewarding gameplay. All of these games are repetitive by their very nature but the best live service and looter style games find ways to make these loops enjoyable and something you WANT to come back to. With Avengers (much like Anthem), the combat and loot loops are so mundane, so boring, and so buggy that you'll become numb to them within a matter of hours. Not days or weeks or months -- hours. And that's where the real disappointment begins to set in.

I can't help but wonder how much better this could have been if Crystal Dynamics had been allowed to make this game in the same style as their Tomb Raider series instead of having to push the "live service" model. Just as I often wonder what could have been with Anthem had BioWare been able to just make it a standard BioWare RPG rather than EA's attempt at a Destiny clone. And that's the final, possibly most damning, comparison: Avengers is CD's 'Anthem' in that their publisher wanted a game to try and suck up those live service dollars going to Destiny and Division and others, so the publisher pushed their dev studio into a game genre they have little to no experience in. The end result shows. This is no longer 2014 and 2015 when we were at the start of a new console generation, looter shooters were still new (-ish, Borderlands notwithstanding) and people were willing to give games like Destiny and Division time to right their wrongs and mature. No one waited for Anthem to mature, and no one is going to wait for Avengers to mature -- especially not with the new generation of consoles right around the corner and new experiences to be had.

I give the game a 4 solely for the story mode. It's not worth anything higher than that. If you want to play the story, give it a month and it'll be on sale. Give it two to three months and, like Anthem, it'll be bargain bin.

Normally it's a 7. Janky combat and ok story.
But exclusive costumes and characters, lots of bugs, f2p payment model inside a full priced game and uninspired game-as-a-service missions bring it down to 4.

Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So,Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So, when I heard Crystal Dynamics was working on this, I thought “well, these guys have had a lot of success with the ‘Tomb Raider’ reboots, so I bet they’ll do great with ‘Avengers!’” And even with the mixed early reception, I continued to hope the game would defy the odds and blow us out of the water. And this is why I don’t get my hopes up anymore because, when I do, they tend to get crushed. Case in point, “Marvel’s Avengers.”
In terms of the few positives, the game’s writing is solid. The story isn’t the greatest thing ever, but I liked the characters (especially Kamala Khan) and I felt like the voice acting was solid enough. Also, I thought the game’s concepts had some potential early on. I immediately took note of each Avengers’ “quirk” and felt that would be a good point for them to build off of, and it got me excited for the rest of the game.
However, the game becomes a crashing bore once it throws you into the “we’re clearly trying to rip off ‘Destiny’ or ‘Anthem’” world where the mission structure feels so lackluster. While the game is more cinematic and story-driven than such game, the mission structure reeks of the “live service” titles it’s clearly trying to emulate, and it almost feels like a blatant attempt to rope you into the multiplayer. While playing the game, I kept feeling like the campaign worked in service to the multiplayer, but not the other way around, and that’s a shame because, if they focused on a single-player experience, this would’ve been much better. But instead, the game structurally fell flat, as did the combat. While I liked each hero having their own “quirk,” the combat got stale incredibly fast, and it felt like each Avengers’ “quirk” was utilized as well as it could’ve been. Also, wow, this game runs horribly. The frame rate is absolutely atrocious with numerous bad dips, and the glitches...oh man, the glitches. I had more than a few times getting locked out of missions because the game glitched or something (I even got locked out of one of the final boss fights in the game because of glitches), and it just felt like the game lacked any form of polish.
Yeah, “Marvel’s Avengers” is a soul-crushing disappointment. I wanted to love the game, but Crystal Dynamics really dropped the ball on this one. If the team had focused their efforts on crafting a great single-player experience, this game could’ve been a worthwhile adventure, but instead, it just doesn’t stick the landing. I genuinely can’t recommend it to anyone, though if you‘re feeling that curious...just watch a walkthrough online. You'll have saved your money, and you'll walk away from it with the assurance that you really aren't missing all that much.

It's kinda fun, the VAs are nice, and the suits look cool... but that's about it.

The story is meager, the graphics aren't impressive, the enemies didn't have any characters (just robots), I can't take MODO seriously,

The game is horribly buggy (wtf facial animations), the multiplayer is a mess, and I doubt new heroes will make the game any better

The game starts out great, Kamala is part of a great introduction to the universe with a small level exploring and picking up comic books. I get the feeling that this first level and a few subsequent ones were designed with a linear narrative driven game in mind and it really works. Unfortunately then come the bland open sand boxes littered with inane objectives from, beat up these guys for a chest, or stand in this circle while things attack you. Remember that amazing comic scene where Iron Man and Thor defended a circle for 40 seconds, yeah me neither. The game is very much at odds with it's source material and the game struggles to really set an engaging pace. The flight controls are a mess, the melee combat lacks impact, and the objectives are boring. The story is kind of interesting but you have to wade through a poor game to experience it. All of the Avengers have somewhat of a different gameplay style but what's missing is that some of the Avengers don't have a move that breaks walls. This means that if you are playing solo, you miss out on any loot/secrets that require wall breaking since your AI companions won't break the wall for you. Another sad thing is they only really put 4 villains in the game as fights, but only 3 of them are actually unique. There's 2 other bosses but those are generic and annoying to fight.

Overall, the game is average and still really needs bug fixing. It's one of those games that shouldn't have been released yet because it feels so unpolished. There's some really good ideas here but not enough variety post game.

Campaign was ok, just ok... it wasn't mind blowing, but it was serviceable to the Avengers, I did enjoy all the banter that Kamala had with everybody. Her voice actor is PERFECT for her character, unfortunately it seems there is no way to replay the story.

The post-game grind is not bad. BUT and a huge BUT, is that matchmaking for whatever activity you want to play is either broken or just doesn't work. I have yet to be able to get into a squad of 4, and at most was able to get a squad of 3 together once.

The social hubs were pretty hidden, and not easy to find at first, they should be available to the campaign playlist too.

Lastly, there are quite a bit of bugs, considering most of the pre-alpha was done from home, this does not take away from the score, but other decisions are baffling and not okay.

Buying this now is effectively entering into a early access build.

Believe the reviews. 4/10 is generous. This Game. This **** game. It seemed like there was no way it could lose. But here we go, watch it fail on every point. Look this game up in the dictionary under Squandered Opportunities.

The worst part of this game is the story. Instead of playing as the Avengers you play as a new character trojaned into the main slot, a character you never heard of and don't care about. I call her Manhands, based on her power of making her hands gigantic. She is an unknown wannabe who spends most of the game fawning over a group she calls “the resistance". She is the center around which revolves a shallow, hamfisted story as boring as the gameplay it accompanies.

In the first 40 minutes prepare to be lectured heavily with SJW cliches, the message delivered awkwardly and without finesse. Rote repetition of chanting mantras that were played out in 2019 take the place where an Avengers story should be. Awful story. Awful, awful story without craft or storytelling expertise. It just keeps getting worse the longer you play. This story is not fire. It's not awesome. It’s not intriguing, it doesn’t draw you in. The terrible cringe of the writing won’t grow on you. IT SUCKS! Hard.

The gameplay is no better. Remember PS4 Spider-Man? You really got the feeling you were spidey with access to his unique movements and moveset. You don’t get that feeling in Avengers. No matter which hero you choose, they all feel kind of the same. What would have been great is a well designed level, where each hero’s unique abilities allowed them access to different sections of the level or approach challenges in a different way. Even Banjo-kazooie on N64 got that concept. But that concept is not understood in Avengers where everyone moves, plays and feels pretty much the same.

The levels are mainly nothing but basic hallways, sometimes pretty, but you can’t escape you are basically in a square box. There was an old hulk game on Playstation 1 that had more hulk-like feels than hulk in Avengers. Square square triangle. Square square triangle. Over and over. And over and over and over. The longer you play this game the worse it gets. This game is the worst kind of grind, a boring and inane mashfest. A fact only made worse by the potential their exciting characters promised, a promise undelivered by the devolopers.

It’s important to understand before you buy this that even though the game is called Avengers, familiar characters take a backseat to SJW inspired Kamala who is the center of the main storyline. THE AVENGERS ARE ONLY BACKGROUND CHARACTERS. This is a Kamala Khan game. Which would be fine if that’s what you bought, but you bought an Avengers game. You know damn well you didn’t buy this game for this spotlighted little chick, you wanted Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Widow. The stupid main character Kamala robbed you of that game. Even when you do get control another character, she pipes in constantly with annoying and disruptive chatter to spoil the mood. Seriously, Kamala Khan is one of the most irritating and unwelcome characters ever invented.

Random villains show up randomly, just to pad the roster. Think it will be cool to play a game with all those old familiar villains? It won't be. Pointless plot structure. The Avengers themselves, when you do see them look less like a movie or comic book counterpart and more like millenial day at the cosplay convention. Except cosplayers would look much better. These soy-soaked Avengers-style placeholders don't look heroic. Maybe it's a blessing you don't really get to play as them that often.
Love microtransactions? so does marvel/square-enix! Really really love them! A lot! Don’t worry about it though, after playing this crapfest a bit you won’t be back to purchase more.

This is by far the worst Square-enix game I have ever played. I wanted to love it. But the idiots that made this just weren't going to let that happen. The fact that they are locking out reviews after the game has been made playable is proof they don’t want the verdict on this game revealed. It’s bad. I can’t believe this is from Square, it is a game so far below their normal standards they should be ashamed. Go ahead, don't believe it. After all, you like the Avengers. So did I, friend. So did I. Don't cry you weren't warned. This is the worst game I have played all year, the biggest disappointment of 2020.

First of all, you're supposed to be able to block, dodge and counter, but good luck executing any of those when you're being targeted by turrets, missiles, freeze rays, lasers, rockets and grenades all at once. It's so chaotic, I can't even focus on one enemy long enough to contemplate what I'm doing. And when you're playing with four people, there's so much **** happening on the screen you can't even see where anything is. So you're forced to either a) mash buttons and unload your special abilities as soon as they're charged in the hope you might survive, or b) run away and use ranged attacks while you wait for your teammates to thin out the soup. It's sometimes impossible to tell what's killing you--the chaos starts and the next thing you know, your health bar is almost empty and your character's saying something like, "I'm not doing so good." And guess how you're supposed to fill your health back up? Yup, by carefully executing moves. I'm in hell.

The gear is absolutely pointless which makes it all the more annoying when you can't progress to the next story mission because your gear isn't upgraded enough to make the mission not a total nightmare. It's nothing but a tedious chore to have to keep checking the gear screen to make sure you're using the highest level stuff. And when you're in combat, you don't notice the difference the gear makes except that maybe you might die slower.

One more complaint: the jumping. If you're jumping a long distance, just one too generous a nudge of the thumbstick is enough to send you careening over a cliff, then you have to stare at that loading screen for practically a whole minute before you can try again.

It doesn't work as either a mindless beat-em-up or as a looter shooter, which is a shame because I like the Kamala Khan character, the acting is good, and the graphics are good. Very disappointing.

I'm really rather confused as to how this game was allowed to be released to the public in its current state. I'm rarely, over my 20+ years of gaming, having ever run into bugs, and that includes games from Bethesda. I, in fact, openly admit I would be a horrible game tester because of how often I seem to have no problems while others run into a surplus. This game, however, is polluted with bugs, I truly wonder who (if anyone) was hired to do any sort of alpha, beta or bug testing before this games' release. Audio bugs, cosmetic bugs, combat bugs, the game crashing at random moments. You name it, the game'll have a bug affecting how enjoyable that aspect is.

The combat, for all its positives have an equal amount of negatives; It's *too* chaotic and at the best of times, simply unfair, and that's not even including how awful your AI partners are. When you've got 2 of them off in a completely different zone running around in circles (literally) and one of them just staring off into space, meanwhile you have to fend off 20 machines that all spawn at once, some of them being gigantic damage-sponges, even without the 10000-damage shields some of them come equipped with, needless to say, you're pretty screwed and you're going to have to die to reset the AI so they do what they're supposed to. That's the tip of the iceberg with the combat. Never mind the off-screen turrets of which there is a surplus is every level, flying enemies with ranged weapons with bullets all traveling at varying speeds, so the attack indicators on them do you absolutely no good. Then you have enemies with incredibly broken mechanics, featuring god-levels of tracking on their attacks, stun locks that last a good 2 seconds, then they proceed to 2-shot or 1-shot your character, even playing as the Hulk. Again...not even the tip of the iceberg with combat....

The story thus far, granted I haven't finished it, has many parts where it simply feels very disjointed. Events happen that you are not privy to and you're just left wondering, "how exactly did that character accomplish this?" The world may never know because the devs designed a contrived, cheesy, cliché, and half-assed story that, amid all the time they had, and still feels like it's missing a lot of parts and context.

It needs so much work still that again, I'm brought back to my original point and question of why it was released in its current state. Maybe down the line, after the team has had a LOT of time to work out these bugs, fine-tune the experience, add more characters, maybe fix the story by adding in some necessary cut-scenes? Truly, I don't envy the team with how much more work needs to go into the game - I just regret buying it on release.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Enjoyed this game greatly at launch despite the numerous bugs and issues. But the Multiplayer is overall not very good at all, the missions are very repetitive and gets annoying and I wish they put fun and value into them. And they should’ve improved their power system because it gets too greedy at times and drains the energy and fun out of you and if they fixed all that, maybe the game would’ve not flopped. I am very disappointed that this game fell. Hopefully they’ll improve in their GOTG game. Expand

First 2 hours of gamimg, its ok, looks like a good game, then, all becomes about dealing with hordes and hordes of enemy droids....im sure there is a game in this pile of microtransations.

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
