If I were to write a short summary, it would be: "Anthem, but with a better single player story."

The single player story is decent enough. Typical superhero fare, better than amateur fanfiction, passable as a story in its own right. Had the rest of the game been this way, it probably would have been much better. Instead, this game is like Jekyll and Hyde (or Banner and Hulk): Two disparate experiences that only have strands of similarities.

Once you get through the relatively short campaign, you hit the live service grind and, well, that's where all the Anthem comparisons begin. Sluggish, buggy combat. Boring, generic locales. Uninspired gameplay loop and reward designs. Braindead, predictable AI, both enemy and ally. Buggy textures and models. Broken matchmaking and multiplayer. Framerate drops. Shoddy camera. SYSTEM CRASHES.

The game tries too hard to be a live service game, throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you -- but they forgot to include rewarding gameplay. All of these games are repetitive by their very nature but the best live service and looter style games find ways to make these loops enjoyable and something you WANT to come back to. With Avengers (much like Anthem), the combat and loot loops are so mundane, so boring, and so buggy that you'll become numb to them within a matter of hours. Not days or weeks or months -- hours. And that's where the real disappointment begins to set in.

I can't help but wonder how much better this could have been if Crystal Dynamics had been allowed to make this game in the same style as their Tomb Raider series instead of having to push the "live service" model. Just as I often wonder what could have been with Anthem had BioWare been able to just make it a standard BioWare RPG rather than EA's attempt at a Destiny clone. And that's the final, possibly most damning, comparison: Avengers is CD's 'Anthem' in that their publisher wanted a game to try and suck up those live service dollars going to Destiny and Division and others, so the publisher pushed their dev studio into a game genre they have little to no experience in. The end result shows. This is no longer 2014 and 2015 when we were at the start of a new console generation, looter shooters were still new (-ish, Borderlands notwithstanding) and people were willing to give games like Destiny and Division time to right their wrongs and mature. No one waited for Anthem to mature, and no one is going to wait for Avengers to mature -- especially not with the new generation of consoles right around the corner and new experiences to be had.

I give the game a 4 solely for the story mode. It's not worth anything higher than that. If you want to play the story, give it a month and it'll be on sale. Give it two to three months and, like Anthem, it'll be bargain bin.

Normally it's a 7. Janky combat and ok story.
But exclusive costumes and characters, lots of bugs, f2p payment model inside a full priced game and uninspired game-as-a-service missions bring it down to 4.

Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So,Where do I even begin with the new “Marvel’s Avengers” game? I remember being very excited for this when it was first announced back in 2017 (at the time, it was known as the “Square Enix Avengers Project”), as it came at a time when Marvel made it known that they wanted to work with trusted developers to make games based on their properties (like Insomniac Games with “Spider-Man”). So, when I heard Crystal Dynamics was working on this, I thought “well, these guys have had a lot of success with the ‘Tomb Raider’ reboots, so I bet they’ll do great with ‘Avengers!’” And even with the mixed early reception, I continued to hope the game would defy the odds and blow us out of the water. And this is why I don’t get my hopes up anymore because, when I do, they tend to get crushed. Case in point, “Marvel’s Avengers.”
In terms of the few positives, the game’s writing is solid. The story isn’t the greatest thing ever, but I liked the characters (especially Kamala Khan) and I felt like the voice acting was solid enough. Also, I thought the game’s concepts had some potential early on. I immediately took note of each Avengers’ “quirk” and felt that would be a good point for them to build off of, and it got me excited for the rest of the game.
However, the game becomes a crashing bore once it throws you into the “we’re clearly trying to rip off ‘Destiny’ or ‘Anthem’” world where the mission structure feels so lackluster. While the game is more cinematic and story-driven than such game, the mission structure reeks of the “live service” titles it’s clearly trying to emulate, and it almost feels like a blatant attempt to rope you into the multiplayer. While playing the game, I kept feeling like the campaign worked in service to the multiplayer, but not the other way around, and that’s a shame because, if they focused on a single-player experience, this would’ve been much better. But instead, the game structurally fell flat, as did the combat. While I liked each hero having their own “quirk,” the combat got stale incredibly fast, and it felt like each Avengers’ “quirk” was utilized as well as it could’ve been. Also, wow, this game runs horribly. The frame rate is absolutely atrocious with numerous bad dips, and the glitches...oh man, the glitches. I had more than a few times getting locked out of missions because the game glitched or something (I even got locked out of one of the final boss fights in the game because of glitches), and it just felt like the game lacked any form of polish.
Yeah, “Marvel’s Avengers” is a soul-crushing disappointment. I wanted to love the game, but Crystal Dynamics really dropped the ball on this one. If the team had focused their efforts on crafting a great single-player experience, this game could’ve been a worthwhile adventure, but instead, it just doesn’t stick the landing. I genuinely can’t recommend it to anyone, though if you‘re feeling that curious...just watch a walkthrough online. You'll have saved your money, and you'll walk away from it with the assurance that you really aren't missing all that much.

It's kinda fun, the VAs are nice, and the suits look cool... but that's about it.

The story is meager, the graphics aren't impressive, the enemies didn't have any characters (just robots), I can't take MODO seriously,

The game is horribly buggy (wtf facial animations), the multiplayer is a mess, and I doubt new heroes will make the game any better

The game starts out great, Kamala is part of a great introduction to the universe with a small level exploring and picking up comic books. I get the feeling that this first level and a few subsequent ones were designed with a linear narrative driven game in mind and it really works. Unfortunately then come the bland open sand boxes littered with inane objectives from, beat up these guys for a chest, or stand in this circle while things attack you. Remember that amazing comic scene where Iron Man and Thor defended a circle for 40 seconds, yeah me neither. The game is very much at odds with it's source material and the game struggles to really set an engaging pace. The flight controls are a mess, the melee combat lacks impact, and the objectives are boring. The story is kind of interesting but you have to wade through a poor game to experience it. All of the Avengers have somewhat of a different gameplay style but what's missing is that some of the Avengers don't have a move that breaks walls. This means that if you are playing solo, you miss out on any loot/secrets that require wall breaking since your AI companions won't break the wall for you. Another sad thing is they only really put 4 villains in the game as fights, but only 3 of them are actually unique. There's 2 other bosses but those are generic and annoying to fight.

Overall, the game is average and still really needs bug fixing. It's one of those games that shouldn't have been released yet because it feels so unpolished. There's some really good ideas here but not enough variety post game.

Campaign was ok, just ok... it wasn't mind blowing, but it was serviceable to the Avengers, I did enjoy all the banter that Kamala had with everybody. Her voice actor is PERFECT for her character, unfortunately it seems there is no way to replay the story.

The post-game grind is not bad. BUT and a huge BUT, is that matchmaking for whatever activity you want to play is either broken or just doesn't work. I have yet to be able to get into a squad of 4, and at most was able to get a squad of 3 together once.

The social hubs were pretty hidden, and not easy to find at first, they should be available to the campaign playlist too.

Lastly, there are quite a bit of bugs, considering most of the pre-alpha was done from home, this does not take away from the score, but other decisions are baffling and not okay.

Buying this now is effectively entering into a early access build.

Believe the reviews. 4/10 is generous. This Game. This **** game. It seemed like there was no way it could lose. But here we go, watch it fail on every point. Look this game up in the dictionary under Squandered Opportunities.

The worst part of this game is the story. Instead of playing as the Avengers you play as a new character trojaned into the main slot, a character you never heard of and don't care about. I call her Manhands, based on her power of making her hands gigantic. She is an unknown wannabe who spends most of the game fawning over a group she calls “the resistance". She is the center around which revolves a shallow, hamfisted story as boring as the gameplay it accompanies.

In the first 40 minutes prepare to be lectured heavily with SJW cliches, the message delivered awkwardly and without finesse. Rote repetition of chanting mantras that were played out in 2019 take the place where an Avengers story should be. Awful story. Awful, awful story without craft or storytelling expertise. It just keeps getting worse the longer you play. This story is not fire. It's not awesome. It’s not intriguing, it doesn’t draw you in. The terrible cringe of the writing won’t grow on you. IT SUCKS! Hard.

The gameplay is no better. Remember PS4 Spider-Man? You really got the feeling you were spidey with access to his unique movements and moveset. You don’t get that feeling in Avengers. No matter which hero you choose, they all feel kind of the same. What would have been great is a well designed level, where each hero’s unique abilities allowed them access to different sections of the level or approach challenges in a different way. Even Banjo-kazooie on N64 got that concept. But that concept is not understood in Avengers where everyone moves, plays and feels pretty much the same.

The levels are mainly nothing but basic hallways, sometimes pretty, but you can’t escape you are basically in a square box. There was an old hulk game on Playstation 1 that had more hulk-like feels than hulk in Avengers. Square square triangle. Square square triangle. Over and over. And over and over and over. The longer you play this game the worse it gets. This game is the worst kind of grind, a boring and inane mashfest. A fact only made worse by the potential their exciting characters promised, a promise undelivered by the devolopers.

It’s important to understand before you buy this that even though the game is called Avengers, familiar characters take a backseat to SJW inspired Kamala who is the center of the main storyline. THE AVENGERS ARE ONLY BACKGROUND CHARACTERS. This is a Kamala Khan game. Which would be fine if that’s what you bought, but you bought an Avengers game. You know damn well you didn’t buy this game for this spotlighted little chick, you wanted Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Widow. The stupid main character Kamala robbed you of that game. Even when you do get control another character, she pipes in constantly with annoying and disruptive chatter to spoil the mood. Seriously, Kamala Khan is one of the most irritating and unwelcome characters ever invented.

Random villains show up randomly, just to pad the roster. Think it will be cool to play a game with all those old familiar villains? It won't be. Pointless plot structure. The Avengers themselves, when you do see them look less like a movie or comic book counterpart and more like millenial day at the cosplay convention. Except cosplayers would look much better. These soy-soaked Avengers-style placeholders don't look heroic. Maybe it's a blessing you don't really get to play as them that often.
Love microtransactions? so does marvel/square-enix! Really really love them! A lot! Don’t worry about it though, after playing this crapfest a bit you won’t be back to purchase more.

This is by far the worst Square-enix game I have ever played. I wanted to love it. But the idiots that made this just weren't going to let that happen. The fact that they are locking out reviews after the game has been made playable is proof they don’t want the verdict on this game revealed. It’s bad. I can’t believe this is from Square, it is a game so far below their normal standards they should be ashamed. Go ahead, don't believe it. After all, you like the Avengers. So did I, friend. So did I. Don't cry you weren't warned. This is the worst game I have played all year, the biggest disappointment of 2020.

First of all, you're supposed to be able to block, dodge and counter, but good luck executing any of those when you're being targeted by turrets, missiles, freeze rays, lasers, rockets and grenades all at once. It's so chaotic, I can't even focus on one enemy long enough to contemplate what I'm doing. And when you're playing with four people, there's so much **** happening on the screen you can't even see where anything is. So you're forced to either a) mash buttons and unload your special abilities as soon as they're charged in the hope you might survive, or b) run away and use ranged attacks while you wait for your teammates to thin out the soup. It's sometimes impossible to tell what's killing you--the chaos starts and the next thing you know, your health bar is almost empty and your character's saying something like, "I'm not doing so good." And guess how you're supposed to fill your health back up? Yup, by carefully executing moves. I'm in hell.

The gear is absolutely pointless which makes it all the more annoying when you can't progress to the next story mission because your gear isn't upgraded enough to make the mission not a total nightmare. It's nothing but a tedious chore to have to keep checking the gear screen to make sure you're using the highest level stuff. And when you're in combat, you don't notice the difference the gear makes except that maybe you might die slower.

One more complaint: the jumping. If you're jumping a long distance, just one too generous a nudge of the thumbstick is enough to send you careening over a cliff, then you have to stare at that loading screen for practically a whole minute before you can try again.

It doesn't work as either a mindless beat-em-up or as a looter shooter, which is a shame because I like the Kamala Khan character, the acting is good, and the graphics are good. Very disappointing.

I'm really rather confused as to how this game was allowed to be released to the public in its current state. I'm rarely, over my 20+ years of gaming, having ever run into bugs, and that includes games from Bethesda. I, in fact, openly admit I would be a horrible game tester because of how often I seem to have no problems while others run into a surplus. This game, however, is polluted with bugs, I truly wonder who (if anyone) was hired to do any sort of alpha, beta or bug testing before this games' release. Audio bugs, cosmetic bugs, combat bugs, the game crashing at random moments. You name it, the game'll have a bug affecting how enjoyable that aspect is.

The combat, for all its positives have an equal amount of negatives; It's *too* chaotic and at the best of times, simply unfair, and that's not even including how awful your AI partners are. When you've got 2 of them off in a completely different zone running around in circles (literally) and one of them just staring off into space, meanwhile you have to fend off 20 machines that all spawn at once, some of them being gigantic damage-sponges, even without the 10000-damage shields some of them come equipped with, needless to say, you're pretty screwed and you're going to have to die to reset the AI so they do what they're supposed to. That's the tip of the iceberg with the combat. Never mind the off-screen turrets of which there is a surplus is every level, flying enemies with ranged weapons with bullets all traveling at varying speeds, so the attack indicators on them do you absolutely no good. Then you have enemies with incredibly broken mechanics, featuring god-levels of tracking on their attacks, stun locks that last a good 2 seconds, then they proceed to 2-shot or 1-shot your character, even playing as the Hulk. Again...not even the tip of the iceberg with combat....

The story thus far, granted I haven't finished it, has many parts where it simply feels very disjointed. Events happen that you are not privy to and you're just left wondering, "how exactly did that character accomplish this?" The world may never know because the devs designed a contrived, cheesy, cliché, and half-assed story that, amid all the time they had, and still feels like it's missing a lot of parts and context.

It needs so much work still that again, I'm brought back to my original point and question of why it was released in its current state. Maybe down the line, after the team has had a LOT of time to work out these bugs, fine-tune the experience, add more characters, maybe fix the story by adding in some necessary cut-scenes? Truly, I don't envy the team with how much more work needs to go into the game - I just regret buying it on release.

And they should’ve improved their power system because it gets too greedy at times and drains the energy and fun out of you and if they fixed all that, maybe the game would’ve not flopped. Even if looking past the gameplay knocks for minimal playstyle variance between heroes, and an equipment grind so unnoticeably rewarding it rivals Destiny, this game is rife with issues enexcusable from this tier of studio.

How anyone can reasonably rate this higher than a 6.5 baffles me. As it stands, I could not grant it more than a 4. I would note that if all the functional issues gets changed, it would skyrocket to an 8+, but that is hopeful and minimally months away.

-The game play feels clunky and button-mashy' from the start all the way to the finish and never has that fluid, smooth, organic feel to it.
-Instead of using movie rights or anything Marvel has ties to they used different actors and faces to mash-up the best similarity they could come up with for the characters and it didn't work well. Like, at all.
-The story all the way through the game including the side quests feels like a rollercoaster that eventually falls flat.
-The visuals can be great at times but dont really hold the game up with its lackluster elements.
-The music flows really well however, the soundtrack I found very fitting.
-The additional content felt forced filled with ads and not very exciting to work towards.
-The combat system felt highly flawed, enemies felt overpowered at times and the heroes felt quite literally the opposite.
-The gear not changing appearances was also highly frustrating.
-The fact alone I had to force myself through the 12+ hours of this game was agonizing,

Even on release day, I was so excited by the idea of the game that I think I was allowing my perception to be pretty generous in overlooking flaws.

Honestly, I had a lot of fun with this game for about a day or two. The campaign was short, but I was excited to get through it to get into what I assumed the "real" game was: Playing online with friends. That proved to be wildly underwhelming, as each mission felt almost identical and the grind of leveling characters just somehow wasn't satisfying enough.

A couple of the characters are fun to play as, namely Thor, but playing as him really began to solidify the problem of feeling underpowered, as a lightning charged hit from Mjolnir only dinks away at a basic enemy's health rather than shattering them. The enemy units are wildly uncreative, just an assortment of the same few robot and armored troop designs, and they just aren't satisfying to fight.

The cosmetics are another huge problem with the game, as most of the upgrades for your characters don't apply any cosmetic changes, and the skins available are all somehow more goofy looking than anything from the classic comics.

The new Hawkeye/ Kate Bishop update seems to be too little, too late, but I may check it out if it's free. I've already thrown away more money than this game deserved.

Also... where's that PlayStation exclusive free Spider-Man DLC I was told about??

Melee combat which is 90% of this game feels spongy as all hell, like your attacks aren't even connecting. In a world with God of War and the Arkham series, how you can screw up melee combat this bad is baffling. The worst crime this game commits other than the live service nonsense is that it makes all your heroes feel weak as candy floss in a bucket of water - if even basic grunt enemies are as little as 2 power levels higher than you, you die in a just a handful of hits. The Hulk should not die in 3 hits. Well done Crystal / Square - you took the hottest property in the past 20 years and p*ssed all over it. Expand

I had to restart the campaign halfway through due to a game-breaking bug, and I had to restart so many missions so many times during that 2nd playthrough due to glitches and bugs. The "DLC" campaigns for the new characters are also terrible and half-baked.

    3- EXCLUSIVIDADE SPIDER-MAN

Beyond the game play as a whole I'm going to criticize the way this game is being advertised and monetized. With companies like Verizon and Intel having skins in the game like one big advertisement for the companies and only giving people who use these products/services the chance to get these special skins. PS4 users are also getting Spider-man locked beyond some terrible console exclusivity. Insomniac already showed how to make a proper super hero video game and now Square Enix is shoveling out this embarrassment as an easy cash grab.

A game corrupted by greed and turned into a live service has, once again, failed. I forgot I had pre ordered the game when it was first announced and forgot to cancel it. I was disappointed when I first saw it on my library. This game failed to do the one thing that it was supposed to do and that is to entertain. It provided a meaningless and uneventful 6 to 7 hours worth of campaign gameplay that was marred by bugs, glitches, crashes and just an utter mess for the Marvel community. Expand

    Pros.
    - Character play styles are unique and true.
    - Skill trees offer decent depth.

    Cons.
    - Graphically the game is terrible (dropping frames, glitches and freezing to the point I had to restart the game on multiple occasions).
    - The story contains only 3 supervillains (2 of which are hardly utilised at all).
    - The story itself is short and unsatisfying.
    - The war table missions are tedious, repetitive and offer no real sense of achievement after you’ve smashed through waves of the same mindless AIM robots.
    - Base/Standard costumes are locked away after the first story mission. How the developers dared to release this title under the condition it is in and represent Marvel like this is beyond me. Either they don’t care or they are deluded to the point they think that what they have produced is worthy enough to carry a powerhouse name such as The Avengers.

The story is pretty poorly written, but considering Marvel comics haven’t been the paragons of good writing recently it wasn’t surprising. Ms. Marvel is the merriest of Mary Sues, she is instantly loved by all the main cast, is caring, confident, intelligent, wise, powerful, and competent from the very beginning, when she is a child. Her story arch is summed up with the phrase, “Good isn’t something you are, it’s something you do”. It’s ironic because she isn’t a good character. The rest of the story is inoffensively predictable, nothing will surprise you.

The game as whole is a glitchy mess, the default camera angle make combat unbearable as your camera gets dragged into the ground. Use the wide combat camera in the settings. If you want to know more about how the game plays, go play some destiny and that should give you a good idea. I refuse to put more effort describing this games combat than the developers put into it.

Micro transactions are atrocious. $20 for a single skin is insane for a game I just spent $60 on. Remove them.

I’m sure this game will be awesome in a year, maybe we will have another battlefront 2 on our hands. Let’s hope because right now it’s not worth the money.

However, I really didn't find Khamala Khan to be a stellar addition to the Avengers. She has some great qualities to her character. For one, she's very down to earth and relates to the audience extremely well, and she seems to have realistic reactions when it comes to meeting other cast members or confronting conflict. On the other hand she can be quite whiney and annoying at times too. This all goes without saying I would overlook this if the gameplay were something of substance. It really isn't. They start you out with the Hulk as your second character with Khamala, or Ms. Marvel, and he has the most rudimentary moveset out of the whole cast. The most entertaining was definitely Iron Man, but even he is lacking in the fun factor. The Batman games have a good "Beat em up" system in place where you feel like countering and dodging enemies is calculated, but here it just feels like you're mashing the heavy or light attacks. Not to mention that 99% of the missions are either defend an area or "go get those guys over there". Not very fun. I honestly didn't get past the first half of the game because it became too difficult at a certain point. I was only on normal difficulty and had tried going back to earlier missions just to get some more loot in order to make my character more powerful in hopes of making the level easier. I watched YouTubers play it and it seemed normal to them. The mission that really made me lose it is where you are infiltrating a complex as Iron Man, fully suited up, and you have to stand in a very small circle in order to hack into the computer system and get into the building. The circle is so small and hard to defend that I frequently found myself outside flying around, as that is Iron Man's main feature, he can attack at a distance and nimbly juke out your opponents. I realized too late that the enemies can also capture the circle and I failed over and over and over again. After an hour or so on this single mission I simply stopped the game. I hadn't been extremely entertained with the game in the first place since it is so repetitive but this was the straw that broke the camels back. Also a minor thing I would have overlooked if the gameplay was better but the menu/homebase system is so slow and I found myself wandering around the helicarrier trying to find each individual place to either equip armor or even load up another mission. It's all too complicated and slow. I would just try and play the campaign but it takes up so much time just with explaining how every single mechanic works. To their credit, it is very intricate and although I tried paying attention I still don't fully understand all of it.
Overall, I really was disappointed with this game, especially because it appeared on the surface to be quite good. The first mission was the highlight of my experience and it was all downhill from there.

The repetitive gameplay would be more bearable if the levels were more varied with different bosses. I beat the campaign but I do not have an interest in same gameplay experience with different characters or worse different skins. It would be better if they stripped this game down to its core campaign, added the other characters to the main story, and unlocked more content up front or more quickly through combat. As a lifelong Marvel fan, I desperately wanted to love this game. I found the early previews alarming but still purchased it on the strength of a review by a streamer I trust. Having finished the single-player campaign, I can say with confidence that this game is a mess.

The good: the characters play and feel like they ought to. There is no PVP mode forcing character balance, and that's a good thing. It also avoids the pitfall of using heroes' powers as add-ons, instead of making them the base gameplay. Sadly, that's the end of the good points.

The bad: the story is based on the flimsiest of premises. It also relies heavily on Ms. Marvel, a character I didn't care for before, but after playing this game, have grown to really despise. Her power set is derivative and her backstory appears to be some Marvel writer/editor's self-insert dream. The supervillains, regular enemies, and stage backdrops are extremely limited, 3-5 of each. The loot system is not compelling in any way. It uses the standard white-green-blue-purple-orange color system to denote rarity, but none of that seems to make much difference. There are no cool cantrips or bonuses, and no buffs on the loot seem to do anything. The multiplayer matchmaking is awful, and for a game that is built around playing with other people to accomplish objectives, that alone is killer. The load times are also some of the worst in recent memory, rivaling Horizon: Zero Dawn for most time spent not playing.

The ugly: So, so many bugs. Others have said this game should have stayed in development for another 1-2 months. That's being nice. They should have taken at least six months to polish this up. So many graphical bugs, disappearing loot, rolled back microtransactions, game-breaking gameplay bugs...you name it, Avengers has a bug for it. For a game to have had such a big beta test, it is astounding that it was allowed to release. It's bad enough that going forward, I would never pre-order a SquareEnix/Crystal Dynamics game. Yes, it's bad enough to be that drastic.

Further ugliness: microtransactions. I might get some hate for this, but I'm ok with microtransactions as long as they are done right. I have 1200+ hours sunk in Marvel Heroes and spent heavily on that game. Even more so for games like Marvel Future Fight. But even I couldn't justify spending real money on what Avengers has on offer. $14 for a single skin, and of course you can't just buy $14 in currency, you have to buy $20. The skins are unimpressive for the most part. There's also a lot of 'garbage' items for sale like emotes (have yet to see one used) and nameplates for your online profile. There are skins and the like available for 'free', as long as you grind through a character's "character card". Unfortunately, many bugs revolve around undoing card progress, so good luck with that.

Overall, the game has some appeal for big Marvel fans like myself, but the many limitations, missteps, and severe lack of polish cast an inescapable pall over the proceedings. There are is a lot of potential here, and future updates could pave the way to a really enjoyable Marvel experience. I just can't recommend it in its current state. As this game is supposed to be a 'games as a service' platform, maybe they should have just released it for free. Regardless, wait for a severe price drop if you are curious, or at least wait until you see that patches have addressed the bulk of the dozens upon dozens of bugs.

I think they should had more content and fixed some issues before release. In this state it looks like they want to use the Avengers franchise and its appeal to just get extra money out of gamers. The story is not related to the movies and starts on A-Day which is a celebration of the Avengers getting a new headquarter and a helicarrier powered by a Terrigen crystal (Mutagen that activates random superpowers in humans that have Inhuman genes / ancestors). Because of some tragic events the crystal is destroyed, a Terrigen mist is created and the Avengers disbanded. Years later superheroes are treated as criminals while an organization named A.I.M. (comic fans will say uh oh now) is tasked in policing and healing the victims of the “Inhuman Disease”. You start as Kamala Khan on her heroes journey. The story itself is decent but some events / twists you can see coming from miles away and there are many out of character moments or characters feel like lesser versions of the originals. Kamala Khan itself is a great character and I like that they chose her (She won me over in all the years). Later you get more characters to use with a good variety. However the gameplay is mixed. There are some annoying bugs, crashes and the AI is not really good. The missions have not much variety and they should have more villains as enemies. You notice the games as a service approach. It is a role model for repetitive gameplay. The loot is also unrewarding as it is the character customization. I expected more and most fans agree. Then there is the monetization. There is so much stuff to buy and there were paid gaming passes for each character. This is a shameless approach and there is no hiding or defending this. The interest for the game is already dwindling towards zero and I read that Square-Enix had lost somewhere between 48 to 65 million dollars from different sources. They also failed in adding more content as soon as possible to stop the downwards spiral as the next (content) DLC was delayed. Even as fan of Square-Enix I said they deserved it. Overall this is more of a money grab than a videogame. Avoid it as it is not worth your time and especially your money. Expand

The first 5 hours were some of the best gaming I've had in a long time. And then the next 7 were among the worst. I forced myself to finish it because I paid 80 bucks for it. Had I received it for any less than 60, I would've just given up.

I loved the story, aside from a few plot points specifically designed to make characters do blatantly stupid things. I would've rather watched the campaign as a movie like Avengers Confidential. Mostly because the game play itself is either buggy or inherently flawed. I'm talking about dodging and evading. It seems to not do a damn thing.

And then there's getting saddled with an underpowered hero for missions. Those were insanely frustrating. Getting hit 3 or 4 times and put down just became annoying. There WERE side quests to try to boost people but let's talk about those next. They're terrible.

Waves of enemies, capture the point, whatever. The load times don't justify how short and ultimately pointless they are. Then let's toss in some Destiny style bounties that have no good point to them...and a gear system that doesn't add cosmetics (along with being so totally generic, they are meaningless) and you've got a lot of problems.

I bought for the campaign. It was at least 13 hours long (would've been 10 I think if some of the systems in the game worked properly). I wish that the game play hadn't tainted the story for me because I was really loving it until I had to struggle bus through their bad systems (jumping and wall running was probably the worst).

I would return this if I could. I'll likely never load it up again. Regardless of whatever 'plan' they have for keeping it going for years, it won't justify grinding with a game play system that's only a shuffle step above Anthem's horrible setup.

All around, I say this is a straight do NOT buy. Save yourself from the frustration OR let them work out the bugs they should've been working on since the first closed beta but ignored.

Marvel's Spider-Man (and spin-off Miles Morales) on PS4 and PS5 is a marvel of a game. Marvel's Avengers is the exact opposite of a marvelous game.

The problem is that Crystal Dynamics wanted to make a live service game without knowing how to actually make it. And because they designed it as a GaaS, there is no skill in this game's combat system, unlike the 2 games developed by Insomniac Games. You just have to deal damage to sponges, unleash powers and ultimates, and heal yourself, just like you would if you were playing a MMO. This design decision contradicts the very nature of superheroes. Can you imagine, for example, the Hulk being kicked in the ass by puny robots one quarter his size and them not being smashed with one hit? Or Thor swinging Mjolnir into human enemies and them still being alive after the hit? That's what we see in this game.

I managed to play just the intro (which is easily the best part of the game) and a couple early missions where I had to deal with waves of spawning and re-spawning enemies in enclosed arenas for an eternity. Then I had enough. And that little girl Kamala Khan aka Miss Marvel is actually very annoying, on top of being a forced diversity/woke/SJW BS.

On PS4 performance is capped at 30 fps, but good luck with all the 20 fps drops when the action really heats up with dozens of enemies on screen.

Yeah, I hate MMOs and loot-based games such as Destiny and The Division. But I'm pretty sure even people who like these genres would really dislike Marvel's Avengers. And I'm surprised we got a GaaS game by Square Enix instead of EA or Activision. I just wish Disney had allowed Sony to make an Avengers game.

The story is trash, very politically correct for 2020 cristal generation. Action is pretty decent, but man ms Marvel as main character feels like Abby 2 if you know what I mean

It could’ve been a great single player title. The publisher chose to go down the game as a service path though, and those who prefer to play solo need to tackle run-of-the-mill co-op missions. The multiplayer on the other hand is messy, chaotic and in the long run boring. When the developers manage to fix the most pressing bugs and find a way to bring more variety to co-op, this might become a solid game. Right now, I can only recommend it to the biggest fans of the Avengers. [11/2020, p.26]

This is the perfect example of "Games as a Service" done right. Marvel's Avengers offers up a superb campaign story to play through that is promised to be expanded on in the future. The gameplay may be repetitive, but it includes just enough to keep players interested and invested in the endgame content that is available now to keep this game going until the next step in its roadmap. The possibilities and potential in the future here are hugely exciting.

There have been plenty of moments during my time with Marvel's Avengers where I’ve genuinely had a great time. But this game keeps finding ways to drag itself down- at times it almost feels like it goes out of its way to do so. There’s just so much here that I can’t overlook, no matter how hard I may try. An unnecessary and broken loot system, a litany of horrible technical issues, uninspired and one-note mission design, and a story that fails just as much as it succeeds- it doesn’t matter how mindlessly fun the combat is, it isn't enough to overcome such a heavy list of problems.
