Simply put, this game is damn good. If you are on the fence, you should pick it up. I haven't put it down since Saturday. I have seen some bugs for sure, but it doesn't take away from the gameplay/story at all. The guns sound amazing, Lincolns finishers feel rewarding, Lincolns subtle little movements after shooting and fist fighting are perfect, and the world is just perfect. I could go on. I would suggest trying to grab this game at redbox if you can. No reason to drop $60 if you're unsure. Hope this helps someone out. Expand

A highly anticipated game that sadly falls short of expectations. Plagues of technical errors and poor graphics that makes it look like it was released during the hay day of the last generation. However, the story that has been crafted makes the game worth the play through. The setting was perfectly crafted with the soundtrack of this game being possibly one of the best in years.

Many are comparing Mafia III to GTA 5. Mainly because of the open world style, along with the purpose of the game being to take out bosses and remove unwanted threats at your pleasure. But, I would like to remind players of another game from Rockstar: L.A. Noire. If anyone has played L.A. Noire, you will find that Mafia accurately resembles that, instead of GTA 5. Despite both games being open-world, there is not much interaction with it despite side missions. Both games perfectly place the player into the 50's (L.A. Noire) and the late 60's (Mafia III), both have excellent sound tracks and both rely upon the story over its other elements.

Love the combat and the atmosphere of the game. Mission structure isn't varied, but to me the combat is so fun I don't mind. Very fun game with incredible story and cutscenes

Mafia 3 is probably one of the hardest games to review. It's very niche in it's appeal.

1st things first - bad aspects. This game is: Repetitive, samey, spartan and probably overlong - and I bloody love it! This game is a sandbox/open world job, but it is NOT GTA or anything similar. What this game actually is, is an extension of Scarface on the PS2. The reason I love this game so much?

This game is a sandbox/open world job, but it is NOT GTA or anything similar. What this game actually is, is an extension of Scarface on the PS2. The reason I love this game so much? Empire building/management. I totally, 100% get, all the arguments about this game being boring, samey and repetitive - the people saying this are NOT wrong. It's just that I LOVE these elements. I would spend hours on Scarface managing my properties, fending off attacks and colleting cash. This is the first game since then that is anywhere close to the same experience.
Whether you enjoy this game will come down to how much you like managing/expanding a criminal empire through performing very samey, reptitive missions. If you don't, then this game will basically be a boring reptitive suckfest, and I'd amend the rating to maybe 4out of 10 at best. My reasons here being: the graphics are nice enough, and the soundtrack is ace, and the story is pretty good - combined with reasonably competent shooting I'd say that makes it at least below average as a game, even if you hate everything else, hence 4/10.
Personally? I say 9/10, but I am hugely, HUGELY biased. I can literally not be objective about this game. The reasons are - theme, mechanics & atomsphere. I love Vietnam era history, I love the empire building and I love the story in this game, as well as the "feel". This game just nails Vietnam era America (at least in a "pop culture" sense). I have given it an 8 because a) I have to give some rating to wwrite a review, an I would rather that it be flagged as a positive, and b) because for me, it is a great game. However my tastes are not necessarily common, hence the caveats above.
As Lincoln Clay, you essentially complete a variety of very samey missions to weaken, and utimately take over, a diverse array of criminal business fronts. However, much of this is winndow dressing (and I say this as someone who loves the game). Why? Simply put, because whether you are helping a boxer being pressured into throwing a fight by dismantiling an illegal gambling front, wiping out a loathsome underground human trafficking operation by a white supremacist organisation, or smashing a PCP ring, everything you do in this game boils down to: Go Here, and either kill this guy, or destroy this thing. at the most fundamental this is literally the entire game. No, seriously. Compared to the likes of GTA or Saints Row, you can forget entertaining and wacky sideline stuff. There is no parachuting out of planes, taxi jobs, taking photos (outside of the share/snapshot feature on PS4) etc.
Let me be clear, the entirety of this game is basically all about a very angry, revenge obsessed man, doing much the same thing over and over again until he has the financial muscle and support to take out the people he wishes to destroy. Your enjoyment of the game is based on same, and how much you enjoy the empire building aspect of the game.
The story is great, Hangar 13 have absolutely nailed the setting and atmosphere and the soundtrack is sublime. I think that the majority of people, however, wll get bored long before theey finish this game, and I am not sure the above good points are enough to outweigh the lack of variety and things to do for the majorty of gamers. Certainly, this is not a sanbox game you can boot up and enjoy titting about in and having a chaotic free roam experience a la Gta. The variety just isn't there, In this regard even GTA 3 thru San Andreas are better prospects.
If all this sounds negative, it should. For the record, I LOVE this game. However I recognise that many (most, even?) people won't. In many ways, this game was made for people like me. I can forgo the lack of thngs to actually do, and the repetitive, ultimately boring mission structure. I can even overlook the fact that 3 hours or so into the game, you have seen pretty much all it has to offer, because I personally dig the taking and slowly building up my criminal fronts.
Running out of space so summary time
    BAD STUFF:
    Repetitive
    Glitchy
Niche (if the setting does nothing for you, disregard this game right now)
Narrow - There are basically 3 things to do in the entire game - Story missions, Loyalty/Busywork Missions where you upgrade your fronts (which in themselves are mechanically similar to story missions), and a few races where you can get cash and add ons for your cars.
Redundancy - if you like GTA and any of the "busywork" stuff mentiond above leaves you cold, then there is literally no reason to own this.

    GOOD:
Setting- 60's era new Orleans-alike drips atmosphere
Story - Well written (imo) and engaging - I cared about the characters to the extent I can overlook failings.
Buy if you love Sacrface, look elsewhere for GTA syle sandbox fun (i.e. GTA V)

Hangar 13 brings us the next installment of the Mafia franchise with Mafia 3: does this third installment become the Don, or does it get buried with the fishes?
Mafia 3 takes place in 1968 in the southern United States city of New Bordeaux, a re-creation of New Orleans. You play as Lincoln Clay, a bi-racial Vietnam veteran and orphan who never felt like he belonged anywhere. Returning from the war you fall back in with the only family you’ve ever known (the black mob), and find out that your family is in debt to the Italian mob and it has to be repaid. When you pull off a job with the Italians to repay the debt they betray you and leave you for dead. Clay sets out on a revenge mission to take down Sal Marcano, his family, and his empire.
Mafia 3 is an open world third-person shooter that does some things well and others not so much. In Mafia 3 you will recruit three different capos: Cassandra, the leader of the Haitian gang, Vito Scaletta, an exiled member of the Italian Mafia from empire bay, and Burke, leader of the Irish mob who also lost his son because of the Marcanos.
There are a total of ten districts to control and each district has a certain crime syndicate that you must take over; you can destroy their supplies, interrogate the informants, or kill the leaders and enforcers. By the 5th district it becomes a bit tedious as you do the same thing over and over again, and going the extra mile more than you need to just to get more money. Taking over rackets allows you to assign one of your capos to run the racket and will allow a bigger kickback to you. Once an entire district is taken over and the boss is killed, you then have a sit down with your capos and assign one of them to the district which will unlock a new perk for you.
The driving in this game feels smooth, with the muscle cars pulling tight corners with a nice drift. Unfortunately, the cars in the game are not licensed.
Mafia 3 is good, but does not keep you interested for more than 20 hours. The soundtrack is fantastic, filled with classic rock and roll, jazz and country from the 50's and 60's. The unfortunate thing about the game is that it becomes very repetitive with each district, the collectibles are a bit tedious, and the world that was so alive during the time of the 60's seems a bit dull. However, you can’t help but continue to see how the story unfolds as you attempt to collect as much money as possible.
Pros: story, time period, character development, writing, soundtrack
Cons: glitches, mechanics, repetitive, lifeless environment and collectibles.

I finished this finally.. 80% of achives.. Different people can have different opinions :)

Yeah, the missions are repetitive, animations (and plenty of other assets) are reused, its buggy, the AI is bad, but for me these were minor annoyances at worst. The construction of the world, the story, and the characters were so good that I never got bored, even with the repetitive missions.

They can't be faulted.
The graphics and little gameplay bugs are what stops this being a 10.
This game rewards time and effort, with the story building and building and the range of emotions that you will go through are incredible. I haven't experienced another game like this since the last of us.
I don't understand all the haters. It seems to me a lot of the really low reviews are fake or the people have only played 1/3 of the game.
So if your a true gamer, you can forgive some of the small issues with the game and your after something that will give you a range of emotions unparalleled in gaming today. Then get this, buckle up and enjoy the ride of Lincoln clay.

    My Experience

I played Mafia 2, but I never got to play Mafia 1. I enjoyed Mafia 2 when I finally got around to finishing it and I thought the story was great, while the gameplay was okay. The focus in Mafia 2 was obviously the story but you were able to drive around the city if you’d like, it was kind of an open world, but there was nothing much to do in that world.

That's very similar to Mafia 3.

Mafia III + DLC is an amazing game. It deserve a 9/10 in my book (I removed 1 point for the bugs). The more you play the more it grows on you. I reached a point where I was so comfortable with all the mechanics (shooting, driving, running, etc...) that I didn't want the game to end. I fell in love with New Bordeaux (New Orleans in the game), the soundtrack (Amazing 60's songs), the cars and the driving, the stealth approach to each encounters, the shooting mechanics, etc...

Some reviews say the game is repetitive, but it's not. It's true that you have to conquer district after district by running after the bosses and try to hurt their businesses, but I felt that each district had its own identity, its own missions, unique landscape and scenery, that I felt it was different from the previous one and kept the game compelling. I never felt bored, and always wanted to continue to the next area. The story is good, although I didn't like the main protagonist however I understood his motives.

You can approach each objective the way you want (stealth or all gun). Both mechanics are very well implemented and fun. Shooting has a slow mo feature that is welcomed since a couple of bullet can decimate you. Guns are varied, and you have to complete certain objectives to acquire some of them (some of the best) which is an incentive to keep progressing to acquire a piece of equipment. There are loads of upgrades that you can get and they are crucial to win some missions.

Likewise, there are very nice and difficult races throughout the city. The more you progress throughout the story, the fastest cars you'll get and better upgrades for your cars that will help you win and beat the highest scores in the more difficult races. You can customise your cars and in the course of the game you'll find yourself driving exotic, upgraded beautiful cars. That's a nice feature since you start the game with slow 60's car, you end up driving 8 valves ultra rapid cars. There is a sense of progression very well implemented. and I kept getting these slow upgrades throughout my 100 hrs playthrough (I took my time cause I loved the game and I beat every mission available).

This is a game you have to give a chance to. At first, you might not like it, but after 10 hrs of play, it will grow on you and you will get used to all its mechanics and you'll want to progress.
I loved all the 3 DLC, there are varied, provide a lot of different objectives and even an additional area that has large fields and jumps à la GTA V.

You'll have to earn money in this game, as most upgrades require you to pay hefty cash to get them, and money is scarce. It is usually found in mafia hideouts when you raid them which gives an additional reason to beat all the objective in each district to get the maximum cash you can get. Weapons also cost a lot of money to acquire as well as car upgrades. You'll never find yourself with an excess of money throughout the game, because of the reasons I mentioned.

tl;dr Get Mafia III and take your sweat time with it. It is a very good game, with excellent graphics, and very well executed mechanics. It has a compelling story a large and varied map, excellent shooting and driving mechanics and dozens of hours of gameplay.

    A perfect example of unawareness.
Mafia 3 is sort of a sequel to mafia 2 in that its main character Vito makes a return, but sadly only as a throwaway... the star this time is a half black Vietnam veteran named Lincoln clay, his race is important to mention due to the fact the game takes place in the mid to late 1960s, and in the south at that in a fictional new Orleans.. so

Mafia 3 is sort of a sequel to mafia 2 in that its main character Vito makes a return, but sadly only as a throwaway... the star this time is a half black Vietnam veteran named Lincoln clay, his race is important to mention due to the fact the game takes place in the mid to late 1960s, and in the south at that in a fictional new Orleans.. so expect to run into some racist trick or treaters and hear the n word used more times than in any rap song you’ve heard…
The first few hours of this game does a great job of bringing the era and time period to life just as greatly as mafia 2 did…
The world felt alive, hearing npcs on the sidewalks talk about martin Luther king jr, James earl ray, john F Kennedy… and the soundtrack in this game is just as perfect as mafia 2s soundtrack was…
And there are a few nice touches to the game like the radio getting staticy when you drive through tunnels…
And then the game cracks and becomes what it’s not and was never intended to be… A generic open world liberation game…
Mafia 3 feels like an Assassins Creed game and ironically suffers from the same thing recent ac games have suffered from…
Mafia has never been about its open world… It’s been about being a time machine... it’s why I loved mafia 2 and it’s why I loved most of the assassin’s creed games… Mafia 2 brought you back in time to live in a world that felt foreign… it made me feel nostalgic for a time period I didn’t even get to live through... it had me listening to music from the 40s and 50s in my everyday life and it immersed me into an epic experience because there was so much love, care, and detail inside of every main mission and the world around you… It all felt hand crafted…
Mafia 3 shifted its focus from being an experience to being a video game the moment it opens up…
And this is where its cracks start to show
The game structure is the same throughout… You’re tasked with doing monetary damage to a quote unquote business… each business is different but despite this you do same thing over and over and over for 20 hours… interrogate a target.. They tell you where the product is... you destroy the product, kill some targets, and get an underboss to come out from hiding...kill him… rinse and repeat...
Once an underboss is killed you can give that section of the city to one of your underbosses for an added perk, careful to keep all 3 happy so they don’t turn on you…
You have to do this Twice to get the main boss to come out… and this mission to kill the top boss in each city’s section are the greatest moments in the entire game.. so many epic and memorable levels to experience here… and the fact that they make up less than half of the game is completely unacceptable…
This doing damage to bring out the underbosses and killing them to bring out the boss is a great idea
I have no issue with this formula being used from start to finish.. what I do take issue is the fact that the structure of these missions dont change…
Every last mission should be as fleshed out as the kill whoever missions… which again are great points in the game…
But especially after experiencing witcher 3.. there’s no excuse for your main missions in an open world to not even have half the heart witchers side mission do let alone its campaign missions…
Sure make me do damage to bring them out, but make each mini boss its own hand crafted experience and story like the main bosses are.. Especially considering they’re required for story progression…
They feel like rinse and repeat liberation points throughout...
If that means the story goes from 20 hours to 12, I’m happy...
a 12 hour masterpiece is worth more to me than 20 hours of the same thing beat by beat…
The actual gameplay itself I felt is a bit unbalanced and inconsistent…
The guns in this game took far too long to reload for the amount of enemies you had to deal with.. sure you can call in for help during missions, but it hardly ever mattered…
You’d constantly get surrounded so cover didn’t matter, even if it did the cover system was super awkward leading you to pop right up trying to switch from cover to cover….enemies felt like bullet sponges, so you’d run out of a clip while dealing with 3 or 4 at a time and while you reloaded it would be over for you…
Even on the games easiest difficulty I felt it was too easy to die considering the circumstances..
And for some reason the main target in these missions takes damage like a tank…throwing the feel of the entire game away every time you encounter one…
You could also stealth around and take out enemies ninja style if you’d like…
Since you do have a voodoo doll to distract enemies and you can whistle to bring them towards you 1 at a time…
The outside world is a bit of a letdown too, as cops hardly feel like a threat at all.. More like ornaments…
And you have to constantly deal with citizens running to call the copy every time you hop in a car like watch dogs but worse...
And they call them unrealistically fast as do the goons calling for back up….
An extreme annoyance that I can kill someone before they say a word and it’s too late.. Reinforcements are here or cops are on their way…
And honestly other than cut scenes or the occasional gunman dropping the n word... I felt like just another white protagonist as no one on the street treated me any different... which was odd considering you do deal with the city’s presence of racism later on in the game…
But the racism seems to only be reserved for missions, failing to ultimately bring the world to life..
I feel like those few missions would have been more impactful if I actually got to feel what it was like to be in the shoes of an African American during the mid-60s.. As I’m sure it was far more and far worse than just being called the n word every now and then and only if you were a mobster destroying drugs and shooting places up……
That being said... mafia 3 still has its moments of greatness…
The cut scenes, the characters, the sound tract… and the missions the developers actually tried at, all ultimately make this game worth plaything through…
    I Give Mafia 3
    an 8.0/10

liking this game immensely. Someone compared it to a Tarantino production and I agree. The open world here is a big improvement over Mafia 2 which seemed kinda dead and empty. Progression is tied to your underbosses ie perks, which is interesting.

Progression is tied to your underbosses ie perks, which is interesting. Being an old timer, the world building and the music bring me back to my somewhat muddy memories of childhood which is both a blast and nastalgic.

Driving is very solid with good physics and a plethora of vehicle's to choose from. Word of warning tho, at this moment there is no garage to save vehicles in but there is an underboss who will provide rides of limited types that you can unlock.

Combat is satisfying with a very good cover system but the early game I found a little tough due to ammo limitations. Thankfully I puzzled out the game mechanics very quickly (stealth matters!) and worked out the particulars in the very first combat heavy mission. No worries!

The only gripe I have with the game is some but not all of the accents in the game are groan inducing, with Southern being the worst offender. Luckily I quickly grew inured to it. I hope this is of some help!

Been a fan of the Mafia series and this was a refreshing break from the classic 30s and 40s period to the 60's and early 70s. Story line, Graphics, sound track and game mechanics is top notch and the mission management screen is an excellent imaginative solution for a game rich with multiple missions.

The greatest indignation towards a game is its awful optimization if a game goes on PS4 Pro with such low resolution of the image, it is terrible to me to present as she looked in the first days on PC. Yes a game of a motonn and in it isn't present at all almost anything about "classical" mafia. But the main plot on what keeps a game - it is and there is desire to show all as "classical" mafia died. Missions for extermination of lieutenants and a cap are unique missions, some at what are perfectly directed. The physics of motor transport is executed is unique, there is no stupid copying from the GTA series. And though in general a game reminds, it is rather a techno demo as in due time was with the first part of Assassin's Creed. It is necessary to remember how successfully there was the 2nd part of that series when have added a variety and integrated these monotonous minor missions into a plot. It will also be possible in Mafia 4, a game that was on sale not badly.
Yes this game not a masterpiece, but comes out not so much games where the setting both on time, and in the scene of action, Louisiana one of the most interesting and mysterious places of the USA is unique.

Bored, I downloaded Mafia 3 to see what it was about.

What I expected: Some bad driving mechanics, a cliché story line, a poor-mans GTAV.

What I got: A really fun GTAV rip off with a story I really loved. The settings of 1960s America, the race riots and failed war on Vietnam, the anti communism racist Americans and playing as a black veteran, made for a really interesting set up, and from the first mission, you are on an excellent revenge story, slowly turning the knife on a mob boss who owns the city which is split between a handful of varied districts.
There's a lot of duck-and-cover mechanics going on, and AI isn't the best, but it's relentlessly fun to play through. The limiting of ammo and weapons to begin with, made the first half of the game a pleasure as I was forced to grab guns from dead foes to get further in the sh1t.

As games go, it's not terribly original, it's not anything you've not seen before, but regardless, when I watched the credits go after 50hrs of playing, I looked back and thought, that was pure fun.

Don't listen to the negative reviews - if you can get this for £10 pre owned, its a fun as fook game to play through

An interesting setting, a gripping story, and the nostalgic 1960s feel of the lively open world make Mafia III an enjoyable game despite the extremely repetitive "take down all these rackets" formula, and noticeable performance issues.

Estava tentado em dar um 7 porque o jogo é um pouco repetitivo, mas apesar disso não deixa de ser divertido. O melhor aspeto é a atmosfera de New Orleans que é uma lufada de ar fresco nos jogos de open world. A jogabilidade é otima. Peca apenas por vir uns anos atrasado. De resto é bom. Nota 8 sem medo.

The main issue with the release of Mafia III is that the game was released unfinished with a lot of bugs and glitches. The Gunplay, Driving Mechanics, Sound Effects are great though.

The graphics improved and bugs ironed out over time. HDR was added.

I had a lot of fun and there is that replayability factor and a lot of value for money regarding things to do in the game. 9/10

    - Algunos Bugs absurdos y poca re-jugabilidad.
-Nula inmersión el los negocios que vas obteniendo. (Sé que no es de estrategia ni gestión, pero solo cumples la misión, controlas el negocio y no hay más.)

♥♥♥ Recomendado para que lo compres en rebaja con los DLC incluidos.

Friggin amazing story. Best story since FF15. I didn't understand how it was a mafia game until the revenge plot unfolded (doesn't take long). Amazing action sequences, amazing cars and amazing music.

There are some bugs still. I noticed the sunlight and shadows going crazy sometimes. But they are rare and honestly the story is SO good it doesn't matter. You gotta be able to listen to it

You gotta be able to listen to it though, it does use the N word but that's what makes it so great. It goes where no game has gone before. You get to fight the Klan and you actually want to with all the heavy racism. I'm glad they included the racism because what makes the game. You're shown just how bad racism is and they show it well. I thought it was going to bomb or come off offensive, no it's actually deep. Buy this game. Haven't gotten to the dlc yet

Nice variety of cars and weapons. There were some very generic open world missions but to be expected from an open world game. First for a 2016 game this is breathtakingly gorgeous the motion capture work is fantastic. The cast is great but it’s just a little jarring to hear white people say the noey noey word, especially when one of them is Nathan Drake himself Nolan North. The game goes really big on racism from again Nolan North forming a **** KKK rally to the N word being said every sentence. Enough with all that the cars are very fun to use because they feel real and the car shooting is also very fun my favorite cars are the Sports cars because of how fast you can go. But it’s a shooter after all and it’s not a amazing shooter if it’s not bloody and lord have mercy this game is bloody. Even one pistol shot can splat brain matter everywhere and it’s amazing, the gun play is like a mix of Uncharted with the slow down mechanics from the Max Payne franchise. I haven’t played the other games but this is the one to play. It’s a very fun game of revenge and it has a great style of storytelling but the racism is a bit shocking but if you can look past that you will find a good game that is just a bit too long. Support this game even though unfortunately the studio shut down due to low sales of this game. Expand

I think the story is very simple but solid enough to make you root for the protagonist and destroy everything in its path like a true killing machine. The main story and sides stories are both worth playing, and the expansions add a lot of variety and fun to the standalone version. Capturing districts did not feel that repetitive since you fight in different settings with complete unique environment and sometimes some places where you wouldnt expect to fight. You can either go the stealthy or guns blazing. Also, the lieutenant system is very well made, especially how the lieutenants get jealous or angry when you dont give them the district which can lead to different outcomes. Expand

Its stealth is too repetitive, its gunfights too familiar, and its driving too boring to support anything else that’s going on. Despite how clever it manages to be in portraying the conquest and control of a criminal enterprise, the nuts-and-bolts missions feel like busywork, and it never fully explores the most interesting aspects of its setting. It’s better than Mafia II, but that’s damning it with faint praise.

This is a game whose best moments are diluted by a torrent of filler, whose beauty is obscured by its technical shortcomings, and whose obvious potential is squandered by a lack of polish. That weird orange sky is, alas, the least of its problems. [Christmas 2016, p.110]

It could have been a really great sandbox for one evening. It’s a shame the developers decided to extend it by over a dozen completely redundant hours, because they had fresh ideas for around one fifth of the campaign and made the rest of the game repetitive as hell. [12/2016, p.48]
