Mafia Definitive Edition is a good remake from the ground up. At least visually. I absolutely loved the original Mafia game, and maybe because I have been spoiled by more recent games of this genre, but I was hoping for a little bit more. If this was meant to be just a story focused game, okay, great, but even the story is somewhat lacking. There is not that much substance in regards to the Mafia or organized crimes in the 1930s. I personally was not as invested in the story, nor did I really care about any of the characters because every chapter just felt like a dramatically thrown together plot without real accurate flavor of a mafioso. There could have been some depth to the rise of the main character, events that take place where the gamer sees his rank rising through the years, the day he was made, his wedding, a bond with his daughter who we never even see yet plays such a vital role in his life. I don't know if adding some side activities could have added some more depth to the story of the main character or not, but there was just so much missing that I wish was in the game.

Maybe someday we will get a real amazing Mafia game where you actually go through the ranks of the mob and there is far more substance to the history most of us know and find fascinating about organized crime and the mafia in America. Maybe some actual rackets we can manage, a currency system, day to day operations that we can control and make choices upon to continue the story arch perhaps in two or three different ways that branch along toward alternate endings.

7 out of 10 but only because I am fan of this franchise. It's probably really a 6 out of 10

Just a shame you dont let us look at the detail as free roam mode had no interiors to explore.. No trains and tram travel that work. All that time and effort those game designers went to

Mafia 2 is better than Mafia Definitive Edition cause you have much more to explore and details. This what you mean as "detail" is a really hard joke...

But the great story is not an achievement by hangar 13. They simply took the story of the original and changed a few things but for the most part it’s still the same story.
The justification that the world is empty because the original was empty aswell is just total **** Sorry but a remake means that you change things for the better. It doesn’t mean that you literally copy every Aspekt of the original. There should have been clothing stores, side activists, train/tram for players in access, money etc. Free roam is empty as **** It’s so empty it makes you wonder why they even bothered.

Not enough content in this game it’s so boring. The secret missions are pretty fun, shooting down the aliens and ufo is pretty trippy but apart from them 3 secret missions there’s nothing to do after the game. Even mafia 3 had more content than this.

    Never thought I’d say that.

These gameplay sections are mostly made up of acceptable driving and clunky cover shooting mechanics. The gameplay is not modernized and feels worse than the original in almost every way. the voice actor with their nasal "italian" accent got annoying in the long run.

but then kept some of the downsides of the original game where you would have the bar as a hub and get to select your loadout before going on a mission.. this happens for maybe a total of 5 missions... then the game decides for you the rest of story. Why not fix that in a remake.

The story is really faithful to the original game, with several good changes like expanding existing content, and game lore, but there were several unnecessary changes like sudden police chases after completing the main objective or giving the police armored car that you must destroy.

    Pluses:
    - Faithful story to the original,
    - Cutscenes,
    - Expanding the existing story
    - Graphics
    - Music,
    - Radio stations,
    - Police can finally chase for driving too fast, hurting civilians, or car accidents, like it was in the original game,
    - No more loading screens when you get to mission arena,
    - Good colection of cars from thirties of the twentieth century
    - Speed limit

    Minuses:
    - Shooting mechanics are clunky, and slow,
    - You cannot use public transport subway, or a tram,
    - some easter eggs are gone from the original like a Secret Cave that you could find in east hoboken,
    - NPC have unlimited ammo (one guy was shooting for 2 minutes in mission 8, in original game if he would run out of ammo and switched to melee)
    - 5 star police model from GTA series
    - some minor bugs like gun sound disappearing in mission 13

Overall it's a pretty good game, but since it's a remake of a game that is for me 10/10, and it lacks some of the small details that the original had the score is lower. Hangar 13 have recovered in my eyes after the disaster that was a Mafia 3 in my opinion. If they decide to make another game about Don Peppone family I might be interested it.

Game looks good. but the gameplay is stuck from the original version. Very boring and bareboned.
Gun combat is terrible to put it mildly. Enemies can hit you easily from far off but you cannot hit them.
Weapons are peashooters and aiming is a good-luck feature. Driving is crap as well, but then again the original was not any better. AI is dumb. I frequently had audio problem bugs.

I frequently had audio problem bugs. It could just drop out totally or be muted in certain channels opting me to restart the whole game to bring it back.

I really had high hopes for this but was mildly disappointed. I was hoping for better controls, better and added content to bring it up to 2020 standard. A complete overhaul.
But this is just a polished work of the original.
also it has been many years since i played the original, but i felt some things missing and left out.

I really hope there will be a good mafia game made someday for modern gameplay.

What I didn't like about this game was the fact that the shooting mechanics could be clunky at times and it also didn't sit right that Tommy could just casually chuck grens and molotovs with ease. For those who want to get this game expecting a wide open world game like GTA or the upcoming Cyberpunk, sorry, no. This isn't the game for you. There is a free ride mode where you can explore the city at your leisure and try to find five hidden cars that are unlockable. For those who are still interested in getting this game, it is really enjoyable although some of the character voices do seem to be somewhat annoying (example, Paulie). Overall, I'd personally rate this game 78 out of 100 on my personal rating system. The Mafia Definitive Edition is neither great nor groundbreaking, but is a well made remake of the original game from 2002. If you are hesitant about this game, wait until it comes on sale. It is currently $40 in the US and $50 in Canada. Ultimately, it is up to you, the gamer whether you want to accept this offer or refuse this offer. Expand

It seems to me that the original game did not deserve this remake, the game is fun, but very linear for modern times, zero replayability, the missions do not bring anything new, and even remove some great things that the original had. If you haven't played the original, I would recommend it; but if you played and loved the original mafia, maybe you should expect the price to come down a bit.

Gun combat feels positively archaic and floaty, with weapon reticules the size of beachballs that make landing a headshot either highly difficult or a skill within itself. Melee combat tries to emulate modern melee systems, but comes across as janky, relying on button mashing instead of precise timing.

Even though there is a large 'open' world available, Mafia: DE's campaign spirits you from one mission to the next with no freedom to explore at your own leisure in between objectives. However, the truth is Mafia's city is devoid of any activities to partake in, feeling more like a movie set filled with extras and cardboard cut-out buildings.

Story-wise, the game feels obtuse and cliche. Unfortunately I couldn't progress beyond the halfway point of the campaign due to game design issues (the infamous turret section with the armoured truck). By this point, I was tired with the game because of how limiting and arduous everything within it felt.

For future reference, games that are remade for the modern era should have a balance of contemporary game systems that seamlessly align with recognisable elements from the original. This way the game feels both fresh and familiar whilst retaining the most important thing of all: Being fun.

Such a wasted opportunity to get back old players that bought the game or new players who will buy it. The graphics, the story and the characters were as good as always, even better than the original game. There are so many sh**ty games that give the player a whole continent to explore with nothing to do, where the player is almost forced to do 400 useless/meaningless fetch quests just to make the game longer and worth the 70$ price tag. A 10 hour linear game is what we need to breath again some fresh air and to appreciate quality ofer quantity. In the last 3-4 years a massive REMAKES movement has risen and the best thing is that we get the chance to replay the best games ever created on new platforms with all the goodies. Mafia Definitive Edition is by no means a masterpiece or a game to be remembered for generations, but a good game which will stand out from the thousands of TIME WASTERS called video games released in the last decade. A good advice is not to buy a game that costs more than 1-2$/hour of pure Story Mode (e.g. 10 hour of story mode = maximum 20$). Why to pay 70$ for a game at release when you could have the same experience at half the price or less one year later. Don't worry, the devs will not be poorer, just their greedy bosses. It has been 18 years since we have seen mafia on the original X box and PlayStation 2, Hangar 13 and 2K continue with the franchise by bringing the oldest instalment to new light. Does this remake become the boss of all mafia games or should it have just stayed as a friend of ours? Lets find out.
Story: The story in Mafia takes place in New Haven a re-imagining of Chicago during in the prohibition era, so we are playing the era of Al Capone, John Dillinger & Bugsy Siegel. You play as Tommy Angelo a cab driver who gets taken by gun point by the Salieri family during a shoot out with a rival family turning Tommy's life around. You start off as a simple errand boy as you do in the life of the costanostra and you move your way up in the family fast to taking the omerta & becoming a made guy pulling off liquor heist with the rest of the crew who are memorable characters Paulie and Sam. As you progress through the story you get your self in a little bit of trouble and now are looking for a way out for the safety of you and your family; so what do you do you turn informant. By doing this you are telling the entire story to the police and you are living that story.
Game play: The game play is not your typical open world shooter, it is very linear though there is no side missions to do at all just collectibles. It works very much the same way and action adventure 3rd person shooter works. Using cover, blind firing & my favourite part of this is that it works like an old school game you have a health bar that if you lose all your health you die; this added to the fun for me. The shooting is a bit more difficult then previous games because Vito & Lincoln were military trained while Tommy is just a street guy.

Graphics: The game does look a little bit dated but hey I get it its an 18 year old game but the updated graphics do look nice. There are some lighting issues I noticed which seems to a pattern for Hangar 13 and the games they release. There are some textures that will appear out of no where which seems to happen a lot too this also seems to be a pattern for Hangar 13.

Verdict: Mafia Definitive Edition was a breath of fresh air for me and was exactly what I needed when it came to a new game it was linear and it was not and RPG, it kept me entertained on my toes a little bit & kept me guess.

    Mafia Definitive Edition 6.5/10 Fun!

I was excited when I started playing the game an saw the lovely new graphics, but by the time I got to my first gun battle and fist fight, I knew the remaster was a wasted opportunity.

The shooting mechanics are just off to me, bad guys fall in a scripted animation and the shooting physics are very weak.

    + great storytelling
    + great graphics

    - Not much to do other than the single player story.
    - weak physics in the game
    - clipping and behind cover mechanics caused some deaths or game fail conditions
    - movement of the character is stiff during combat.
    - The frame rate is very bad, this should have easily reached 60fps without fail in 2020.

Avg at best, recommend trying it for the story if you can grab it on sale.
