If you've ever played anything from Telltale Games, you know what to expect from Dontnod's Life is Strange. Wander around, talk to people, make a decision that will have consequences here and there, rinse and repeat until you beat the game.

When the game began, I had to laugh at some of the design choices. All kids in this game are hipsters with poor fashion sense, and they all use ridiculously bad slang. The game is littered with references to popular internet memes like doge and 'Y U NO' guy. It's gonna age terribly as a result as well. I got over that pretty soon, though, because the story is genuinely interesting. By the end of the first (free) episode I was dying to find out what happens next and quickly rushed to buy the season's pass.

The game centers around Max Caulfield, a talented teenage photographer who suddenly gains the power to rewind time. She has to use this power and stop a giant tornado that's going to hit her home town in a few days. Of course it's not that simple, and there are many people whose lives will be changed (and potentially ruined) by her actions forever.

The characters are a bit hit and miss. It's easy to connect with Max. She's a shy, quiet, slightly awkward loner who's being bullied by the mean popular girl. Her voice actress is also pretty good. The quality of the rest of the voice actors is all over the place. Some of them are genuinely good. Some of them sound like they've never done any voice work before. The character of Kate Marsh in particular was very annoying to me. She is one of the major characters, has a tragic backstory and is an interesting character, but her voice is whiny and her delivery unconvincing. You're supposed to feel bad and care for her, but I just wanted her to shut up every time she opened her mouth.

The music is alright. Most of the ambient tracks feature a guitar (an instrument Max plays), and there are a few licensed songs from bands I've never heard of in my life. I'm not a fan of this style, but I didn't hate it.

Visually LiS is less than impressive. The graphics are bad, plain and simple. It's not the ugliest game I've ever played, but it definitely doesn't look like something that was originally released in 2015. There's a lot of clipping and weird animation glitches, and the swimming pool scene in Episode 3 was so poorly done it was actually distracting. It easily looked like something from early 2000's. Again, it's the story that matters, not the graphics, but I feel it's still worth mentioning.

Unlike TTG games, LiS offers a much greater degree of freedom. It's mostly good. You can wander around and look for meme-related Easter eggs and hidden photographic opportunities (there's a trophy for that), but there were a few moments where I was running around like a headless chicken, trying to figure out where to go next. The godawful junkyard scene from Episode 2 immediately comes to mind. Your choices also aren't set in stone. If you don't like the outcome of your actions, rewind and choose a different option.

Overall, Life is Strange is a decent game. There are technical hiccups here and there, and - being an indie title - it's simply not as polished as a AAA game would be. In its center is a gripping story, a bunch of interesting (if poorly voiced) characters, and some real, raw emotions. Definitely worth a play.

As a side note: if you've never played this game before and are only just considering it, please do yourself a favor and avoid anything that could contain spoilers. I had the ending spoiled for me and it did ruin the game a little.

First thing it’s worth commenting is that I think this isn’t a game for everybody. If you like fast paced games, with a lot of action or where you play a very active role then this isn’t gonna be your thing. This game presents a slow paced gameplay where you basically walk around, talk to people and look at objects; it creates tension and interest through the story, not the gameplay. Said that, it is very similar, in terms of how to play it, to heavy rain, until dawn etc., so if you liked those, chances are you will like this one. I always describe these games as point a click adventures, but without the puzzling element the classic adventures used to have, it is a lot simpler (sometimes even too easy) to progress here. How long to beat? Probably around 15h, assuming you like to explore the surroundings, a bit more, maybe, if you want to find the collectibles.

Other things, the graphic style is a bit weird sometimes but I’ve come to like it (take a look at some videos and pics), I don’t think it ruins the experience or anything so they’re good enough. The OST is fantastic, the music goes incredibly well with the game, they’ve done a great work here. Finally and most importantly, the story is great although I must say it might feel a bit slow. The first two episodes are a bit of an introduction and then real interesting stuff starts to happen from middle/ending of episode 3 onwards. This means, it may feel a bit too slow at the beginning (that’s what I felt), but if you hang in there until the end you’ll realise the story is actually quite well done. It left me with a feeling of “wow, this was interesting” at the end. The characters are likeable in my opinion, although this is highly subjective and the story I think is highly focused on the feelings of both the main character and one of her friends, which you may or may not like, but don’t get me wrong, still a thrilling story behind all this, it is not all cheesy.

Anyway, I quite like games that make me feel something in the end, after playing games for more than 20 years I find most of them don’t make me feel anything special at the end; well…this one did. If you’re looking for something a bit fresh with a good story and don’t mind about slow paced mechanics, give it a try. If you’re the kind of person that only that likes fast paced games where you have to take a very active role bla bla bla you might want to spend your money elsewhere.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought this was a very meh entry into the interactive game genre. First thing first, yes I did think the story was good, but the whole rewind mechanics totally destroys the whole point of the story game. Yes, its cool to see different outcomes until you get your preferred choice; but for me the magic of these type of games, is you live with your choice and face the consequences, sure you can cheat in other games, but I enjoy facing my consequences in these games. There is no risk and reward in this game for me, and there are a couple of times where the game screws you, and completely takes away your powers. Those two things break the immersion for me, I went through the whole game thinking, ok if I mess up, there is the rewind. Apart from gameplay-wise, I also never liked Chloe, anyone who probably liked this game made a connection with chloe, but not me. She's just a spoiled troublemaker with a big mouth, it's funny I actually liked her the most when she was disabled, she actually seemed like a caring person then. Basically, you can imagine the eye rolling for me during the last part of the game with that descision. While I did enjoy the "Dark Room" storyline, episode 1 was a horrible chick flick, 4 and 5 were big meh's that I wanted to end; but I did enjoyed the majority of episode 2 and 3. I also thought the whole time changing twist in the story was an eye roll or me, the moral of the story was basically "you cant change destiny, or there will be consequences". And also, If you chose 1 of the 2 endings, none of your choices in the whole game mattered, literally. All in all, I'll reccmmend a rent if you like interactive games, but that's pretty much about it. Pros: Good story revolving about the murders, Epsidoes 2 and 3. Cons: Chloe, rewind is unique but non-immersive, episodes 1 and 5. Expand

Throughout the game, Max uses her time powers in her everyday school-life, saving those she cares about and all while investigating the strange happenings in her home town of Arcadia Bay.

Max’s time and space manipulation powers are some of the most impressive time/space powers that I’ve seen in a modern-day game. Max’s main power is her time-reverse ability, which is limited. It only allows her to go back in time, up to a few minutes, which is great for changing conversations, gathering important information or to get the best outcomes out of specific interactions The ability to see the initial outcome of your decisions and to have the option to change them, gives players better control on how the story develops and is a huge step forward for these types of choose-your-own adventure games.

Secondly, Max’s time travel powers manifest in a different way using her love of photography. Without spoiling too much of the story, one of Max’s more prominent abilities later in the game allows her to change whole timelines for better or worse. It really opens up the game to a more dynamic element of time-travel that really solidifies the game’s heavier emotional and sci-fi elements.

On top of Max’s amazing powers, Life is Strange has an emotionally gripping story. Not only does it give true science fiction enthusiasts a great story to rival movies like The Time Machine, Butterfly Effect, and Back to the Future, it also creates a truly immersive, dramatically-dynamic game similar to Heavy Rain. With choice being the main concept and consequences really meaning something, the game shows off it’s incredibly impassioned story telling with meaningfully hard choices and conversations that create a rippling effect that really make the player question their decisions as the game progresses, but in a positive way.

While investigating, the game has you following a bold story with tons of intrigue and peril that truly keeps players on their toes. It should’ve been something I saw coming but the writing and personal choices I made really kept me guessing until the end, making it into a truly awesome roller-coaster mystery adventure. On top of that, the mystery solving in the game felt real, as if it were something I could figure out in real life. At one point in the game, Max and Chloe have to put together evidence they collected, which added a surprisingly fun puzzle element to the game without being stupid easy or ridiculously hard.
The soundtrack was definitely a stand-out element of this game. Not only did the director do a fantastic job of creating a perfect environment for the soundtrack but the timing and artistic aesthetic made one of the best video game soundtracks. In a weird set of events, I accidentally ended up getting the Limited Edition version of the game, which came with a CD of the soundtrack. Some of the bands include Syd Matters, Message to Bears, Bright Eyes and several other indie-alternative artists.

This game wasn’t without faults though as it had a rough introduction. From the very start, Max attends a prestigious, private art school which made the initial feel of the game to be pretentious. If you’re not big into art and photography it can be a bit of a drag. There were definitely some more down-to-earth supporting characters but, initially at least, I found it a bit hard to get into the setting of the story.

Secondly, the game world of Arcadia Bay and Blackwell College was well done but I felt that the much of the click-and-point elements were meaningless. Even though most of time, interactions and conversations gave you some decent insight into the story, I found that a large portion of it was useless fluff. As an example, Chloe would comment on strange things like a poster or options like investigating the dirtiness of a vehicle. It slows the pacing of the game with unnecessary dialogue most of the time.

Life is Strange is by far, one of the most impressive adventures games to date. It mixed emotional story-telling, dynamic gameplay and sci-fi time travel perfectly. This should be the new benchmark for choose-your-own adventure games because if this is what we can get out of these style of games, it makes me eager for the next one.

The human time machine mechanic in Life is Strange is sort of an anti-game mechanic. Every important decision can be rewound and repeated with a different outcome as many times as you like before moving onto the next encounter. I cycled through all the options on several occasions, having all the time in the world to make a decision. This is a sharp contrast to Telltale games where your decision making can be mooted by missing a quick time event. (We've all lost good people because we didn't see the notification to press X.) Lost is Strange may seem to have low stakes game play, but they it doesn't. Each decision has consequences later in a masterfully written story.

As mentioned above, plenty of other games have presented great stories that can be shaped by players. Most of these were action games where you would stop for conversation after killing dozens of enemies. A game like Life is Strange is what happens when you take mass murder out of the equation. In a further anathema to modern gaming, the story is a about a mopey teenage girl and her girl friends in a mysterious coastal town backed by a soft indie soundtrack. Maybe Life is Strange works so well because it is so fresh and different. I certainly want to see more games like it.

In some sense it might be more about the choices we didn't make. As time travel rears its ugly head into this world that fact becomes more apparent. An ability that although used with good intentions can potentially have dire consequences. This is a five part episodic game blurs the line between game and movies quite well with all its cut-scenes and narrative sequences. Its easy to jump right into this world and just get lost in the flow of events.

You play as Max, a photography student at Blackwell academy. After watching someone get shot Max quickly realizes she has the ability to rewind time. Max uses this new ability to save the girl's life and quickly realizes it is her old friend Chloe, whom she hasn't seen in five years. Chloe is very different from the girl Max knew as a kid, shes been having an especially hard time since her friend Rachael Amber disappeared from Arcadia Bay. Her and Chloe decide to investigate what happened to Rachael Amber by connecting her disappearance with other events happening around Blackwell. They also have another problem to worry about as Max is having premonitions of Arcadia Bay being wiped out by a huge storm. Its hard to tell if its just a dream or not but a series strange weather events and dying animals feels like a bad omen.

This is a story based game all about player choice. The choices you make will have different effects throughout the game. With the ability to go back in time Max will often question her decisions and at times you may be tempted to go back and undo your choices. I feel like player choice in this game is more about getting you immersed than it is about influencing the events that unfold throughout this fairly linear narrative. It really makes you feel connected to Max as you go with her through various struggles and challenging dilemmas. It often feels like a movie or mini-series cleverly disguised as a game.

The characters are the highlight of this narrative-driven game. Between the superb writing and wonderful voice acting all the citizens of Arcadia Bay feel very believable. Chloe is at wits end with her step father, who just happens to be Blackwell's head of security. Drama surrounds Victoria, the super popular mean girl, who despite her attitude seems to have more going on beneath the surface. Kate, a very kindhearted and devotedly religious girl, is feeling quite down after she becomes Victoria's latest victim. Warren, Max's closest friend at Blackwell, is great help with Max's science homework and seems to have developed quite strong feelings for her. This is just a taste of the many characters in this game, all of whom can't even really be summed up in just a sentence or two.

Playing through this game is quite a thrilling experience. Your power to travel through time is exhilarating but the more you use it the more questionable it becomes. You actually feel fairly powerless as things seem to get progressively worse as you dig deeper into the games mysteries. It is quite exciting however trying to put the puzzle pieces together. You'll want to keep coming back till to see where everything fits in to the picture. I had some mixed feelings in the last episode but with everything weighing on it and seeing how highly built up it was, this was basically unavoidable. It took awhile for me to process everything that happened in this game but I really did enjoy my time with it and would recommend to any who is looking for an immersive and interactive story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The first chapter of the game is pretty slow and almost put me off, but chapters 2-4 are amazing....but then I didn't really like chapter 5. Overall I recommend it though. The experience you get in chapters 2-4 is worth putting up with the less impressive chapters 1 and 5.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Life is Strange is a fabulous game. I, personally, love it. The main plot is truly beautiful in the sense that is perfectly and very descriptively goes through each and every bit of story, in a totally non-confusing way. it tells a great story of a girl named Max who has just moved back home. Now it seems a little crazy, and the time traveling foundation can seem shaky and does appear completely fictional. However the way Max uses her ability to time travel and the way she spends her time and uses the information she has is unbelievably human. It is realistic and believable and it is beautiful. It makes me cry when I think of the plot solely because the story is so pure and shows some (somewhat) real responses to (somewhat) real human issues. It is relatable and just a great game in general. the graphics and art style are great and it is just fabulous overall. 100% recommended!! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll give it a 7 instead of my initial 8 because of how it gave me a headache, it's practically impossible to understand. On the other hand, I guess that is the negative side of science-fiction..

Putting that aside, the game has a lot of beautiful environments and, compared to most 'own-choice-making games' you get to do a lot of playing, instead of only picking answers to dialogues and moving now & then.

You really get to play the game as it's supposed to be and I'm pretty sure that's what we buy it for.

As for the graphics, nothing bothered me except Max' hair. It looked like a Minecraft cube when she showered.
The game makers put a lot of thought in the rest though and I loved the little park in front of the school.

SPOILER: I'm so happy they added the possibility to kiss Warren. It was very satisfying.

Bought this game recently and just finished up so now I feel is the best time to talk about what I think of the game!

This game is definitely a breath of fresh air; it is a pretty original concept but it does have a couple of flaws. Starting with the good...The voice acting is actually pretty good, was not expecting to see performances of this level in a game like this that had little to no publicity. Characters and setting were really believable and you genuinely cared how the major decisions were going to affect them over the course of the game. Runs smooth with the seamless integration of time reversing. Music fit the atmosphere perfectly.

I can go on and on with the good but now I feel as though I should address the bad because, being that a sequel has been confirmed, these are issues that I hope are looked at and improved upon in the future... No lip syncing, its a small issue but it can really break immersion at times. There are quite a bit of plot holes that one can easily walk through if thought about enough. The ending was pretty badly executed, I wished that my actions and decisions would culminate into a worthy ending and not just choosing which ending I want (I still absolutely loved the journey to the end, but the end itself did leave a little bit of a sour taste due to its execution).

To sum up, I loved the game and I see the potential there for the sequel (sadly, it will have a different set of characters this time around!) and I am definitely excited to see what DONTNOD has planned for us in this potentially new series!

While not a shoot em up type game to play with friends it's definitely one that can be enjoyed with more people as you debate what decisions to choose. One interesting part is after each episode they tell you the percent of people who chose each option for every "question". One thing that is very important to me is value in a game. The game still follows the Choose Your Own Adventure style, however with a mechanic that lets you rewind back a few seconds, letting you go back and see what else you can do, such as saving somebody, seeing what else may happen, etc. Obviously you can't rewind between episodes, and there are some moments where your power is stripped away, and you've only got one shot to do something. It's a very enjoyable game, however no game is without it's flaws. For example, the stealth sections are stupid; they have no additional add-ins such as distractions, it's just you running from cover-to-cover at the right time; it's not actual stealth. In fact, anything other than exploration is just a mess; I think i'd be better to include some puzzles rather than having some thrown in and have them be lackluster. It's a beautiful, touching and messy game, but I recommend it to anybody looking for a great experience.

The only warning I'd have to someone looking into it would be that if you really don't soft indie music or artsy teens talking about photography, there is gonna be a big hurdle to jump. That said, despite its frilly exterior, the game reaches a level of darkness and sci-fi mind-f---ing as your journey unwinds up there with the twiglight zone and black mirror. This game really blew me away. The writing is great and the rewind feature is both rewarding to use and works as unique method of seamless character development. You'll find yourself strangely attached to characters you'd written off. This game is a true work of art that will play with your expectations and preconceptions. Expand

Further proof that video games can tell emotionally engaging stories and present relatable characters. Superb voice acting, beautiful art design, a smooth score, and good use of licensed music all help to make this story game one worth playing. If you are looking to take a break from the usual RPGs and shooters, then I recommend you start with Life is Strange.

Life is strange is a great narrative based game, with some nail biting decisions to make. The main storyline is mostly ridiculous, but what is amazing is the characterisation and development of the smaller details that underpin it. It looks a bit rough in places, like a PS3 game and at times, the dialogue and story feels a bit 'Emo' with it's teen angst and constant whining sidekick, butLife is strange is a great narrative based game, with some nail biting decisions to make. It looks a bit rough in places, like a PS3 game and at times, the dialogue and story feels a bit 'Emo' with it's teen angst and constant whining sidekick, but if you can get past that, it's well worth playing. The final two episodes in particular are nothing short of gripping. The time control mechanic is really well implemented and there were a couple of puzzles later in the game that had me scratching my head for a few minutes. Aside from the occasional time rewind puzzle, there doesn't feel like a tremendous amount of actual gameplay here, it's mostly walking around, moving objects, pressing X now and again and making dialogue decisions. However - the level of intrigue the storyline creates through the decisions you make quell that to a degree. It is a fantastic game and even though I finished it months ago, I often find myself thinking about some of the twists and turns it creates as the story unfolds. Expand

A stellar example of story telling and a proof that there are no limits of what videogames can achieve. If you like telltale, you will love this! If you like great stories and characters, you will love this! If you have a heart, you will love this!

An honest, sometimes even painful, story about friendship and finding yourself. Life is Strange is played with a lump in the throat and its ability to make a grown man tear up is its true "power".

The Limited Edition of Life is Strange doesn’t introduce anything new. The graphics are the same, as well as individual episodes that form this wonderful adventure. The art book and soundtrack are still a nice plus that could push some collectors to purchase this edition.

Despite its obvious flaws the reactive story and compelling characters make this one of the best storytelling experiences of the current generation.
