A poor contribution to the series.
The "quests" are illogical and often dumb (go and look for wooden planks for 20 minutes by bashing everything you can find).
It's not pedagogical towards children at younger ages, and it's far to dumb to attract anyone of older age. There are a million ways to do a game like like The hobbit, and this is not one of them. For instance, when my daughter

For instance, when my daughter need to get up a cliff she needs to select a specific character (out of 10+ different one), equip the right weapon (even if it's sometimes just plain stupid) and stand in the correct spot, and press the correct button.
I know that even adults would fail at this from time to time, so why do a game for kids with this sort of puzzle solving?

Save your cash to buy the next one in the series instead. This one was a failure.

This game's a bit simple. Very few levels, boring quests, stupid looking mithril creations (a bow with a fish on it? Really). For once, LEGO have made a bad decision in making a game before all of the movies are out. (There's literally 12 levels!)

The prequel to The Lego Of The Rings video game delivers absolutely nothing new but keeps its pace like the last game. The biggest issue with the game is that it’s uninspired, the levels are the same as before,so is the hub areas as well. It’s like they took everything from lords of the rings added it to this game and made it worse, it’s absolutely disappointing. At least the items you get from levels are more unique now, but still the character roster is mediocre at best. The levels sometimes even feel the same and that’s also disappointing. At least the hub areas have more things to do in them, but the areas you encounter look terrible visually speaking. Overall an absolute disappointment to what lego lord of the rings was, Lego The Hobbit delivers nothing new and feels like a copy of the last game but with new tiny things you won’t even notice. I can't work up the energy to actively dislike the LEGO games so long as they're this innocuous and harmless, and spanning just over a dozen levels, LEGO The Hobbit doesn't waste too much of the player's time. But, with all of the most fitting licenses having been used up already, the LEGO spoof series is losing its relevance, and it's not a particularly good time anymore, either.

It would've been much better it it had conviction and went fully role-playing Lego game. [Issue#244, p.63]

Never revolutionary, but it's still a cheery, tipped-out toybox filled with jokes, puzzles and loving references to Peter Jackson's new film trilogy. [June 2014, p.92]
