This might be the first time in history that the sequel looked worse. Actually, this game is so hilariously bad, that I should not waste my time coming up with words to describe its failing as a consumer entertainment product. But there is something fun about blowing things up, so it is important to understand how Square Enix got this game so wrong.

I will give Just Cause 4 credit for not crashing. The previous game, Just Cause 3, crashed constantly. Also, I am playing Just Cause 4 on PS5 and the load times are a non-issue. This game might be a nightmare on PS4 because Rico will often instantly die in mysterious explosions. These are the only accolades I can give Just Cause 4.

The low quality of the graphics in this game is both stunning and confusing. Put simply, the game looks like dog **** The lighting is bizarrely too bright and too dark, lights flicker constantly, models are pixelated, hair texture is non-existent, shadows appear in odd places, and most of the environment is the same low quality rocks, trees, buildings, and cars on repeat. Just Cause 3 looked great. Why would a developer create worse looking models for Just Cause 4? Did they lose the license to the engine they used for Just Cause 3? Did Square Enix really charge $60 for this turd?

I might excuse the bad graphics if it meant the rest of the game ran smooth as butter. Overwatch and Fortnite are great examples of games that trade graphics for performance. I wish Just Cause 4 had done the same. Flying around in the game, you will see pop-in. You will also see tanks fly into the air for no reason and helicopters materialize out of nowhere. In an action filled firefight, the screen will go white as Rico is obliterated by some unseen force. The a.i. will walk NPCs into corners, have enemies stand still while you lay into them with a machine gun, and send escort mission NPCs through burning wreckage. The vehicle models you blow up are sometimes replaced with wrecked versions of the vehicle and sometimes with skins that show a blackened texture. There was no attempt to simulate real destruction.

The most heartbreaking failure of this game is the failure to fulfill the premise of the Just Cause game series: destroying everything. For starters, you do not need to destroy enemy assets anymore. What you do is create "chaos" to earn troops who will take regions. First you have to conduct a mission at a base. There are only 3 kinds of missions so get ready to rinse and repeat. Once the mission is complete, you select the region on the map and send in some troop. There is no fighting for Rico. The map changes color and the region is taken over. The thing about earning "chaos" is that you can easily earn it from fighting the enemy, and by midway through the game I had enough troopers on standby that destroying fuel tanks and radio towers was no longer necessary.

Destroying things for fun is also not as fun as Just Cause 3 or Just Cause 2. You have many of the same tools. The problem is the setup. Like Just Cause 3, every base and city is very far away from each other. Perhaps to compensate, the game has enemies teleport to the player rather than travel from the far edges of visible space. There is no point in using a crashed bus to set up a roadblock or dropping a fuel tank from a cargo helicopter. Even in bases, the goal is never to destroy things but to flip switches or activate a computer console that is oddly and conveniently placed on the roof of a building. Dear Square Enix, no one wants to play a game about flipping switches.

The story and voice acting are barely worth mentioning. No one plays these games for the story. The story also peaked with Just Cause 2 when Rico fought a dictator while riding nuclear missiles. The least Square Enix can do for players is have voice acting that isn't flat and repetitive and cutscenes that look better than a game from 2001. I actually prefer for the story to be in-game. Maybe put some of that cutscene budget into models and textures!

If I didn't mentioned the weather effects in the game then it is because they look terrible and offer nothing that Just Cause 4 needed to be a decent game. If Just Cause is going to innovate, then start with having every enemy building destructible. Muhahaha.

All-in-all, this game is a low effort cash grab that killed the Just Cause franchise. I cannot see how I would pay $60 for another Just Cause game. In fact. Because of the failings of Just Cause 3, I never bought Just Cause 4. The game was a PlayStation Plus "free" game for me. If you pay more than "free" for this game, you overpaid.

Another game that I got from PS Plus that I'm so glad I did not pay for. Story, Graphics, Environment, Controls. They are all awful. The cars drive like sleds on ice. Just Cause 3 went beyond that and made it more realistic but the physics were clearly not up to scratch and the campaign missions were bland and forgettable which felt like a downgrade from that aspect. The performance was way horrific since day one, eventually releasing a patch to amend the issues. And Just Cause 4...is pretty interesting when it comes to both gameplay and quality. I myself think that they did improve for performance but the aesthetic was so similar to the previous titles that it felt way too repetitive and outlandish. I would wait until this game is free on PlayStation Plus or on Sale for less than it's current price. Because it's not worth using your dough for this mediocre garbage Expand

Just Cause 3 was great. It was all about destroying (Just Cause - damage!), freeing villages. Then also finding collectibles and getting new vehicles. So it really had a lot of content and basically something for every type of player.

Now, Just Cause 4... let me go ahead and write: What shallow game you guys produced! Cinematics are poor and look like they haven't done much since

Now, Just Cause 4... let me go ahead and write: What shallow game you guys produced!

Cinematics are poor and look like they haven't done much since JC3. Seriously. The game started with the cinematic intro and I thought: YIKES! - In a negative way of course.

Now. Little Story introduction... You have to free the whole map from the evil suppressors. This hasn't changed. But now you have to build up chaos by destroying things (usually stuff that has red paint on them - Tanks, Antennas, Satellite dishes, generators) so people will join your cause. You need a certain amount of troops to free an area...

The world feels empty even though there are people walking and driving around.
Story mission and freeing areas basically are 3 kinds of missions:
    1. Go to X download something. Defend. - Go to Y download something. Defend. Etc.
    2. Go to X hit a button or start something then reach 6-8 other points in a certain amount of time.
    3. Destroy something.

    Side missions:
    1. Find and solve 5 tombs (was the only entertaining bit, so I could produce some guides from this lame game)
    2. Do some stunts with a vehicle or with your wing suit. (Most of the time the vehicle is nearby and you just have to go through a ring with it. Most of them are no challenge at all - the wing suit ones are a bit harder...
    3. Capture a car, drive to a destination to pick someone up, destroy the car by driving it down a cliff, bridge, etc.

    Conclusion:
It wants to be a AAA or AA title and sell expensive. But this is not worth it. If you really want to play this (I regret buying it) wait for a year and get it cheap. This is really embarrassing and I hope - with an aching heart thinking about JC3 - this was the last of Just Cause. My fears are that Part 5 could even be worse!

Game was extremely laggy and glitchy for me on the PS4. Was flying around more than blowing things up in this one and was constantly getting fired at in every direction. I just don't recognize any of the elements that I loved from previous entries in the series in JC4.

It's horrible and sad to see a franchise bomb like this.

Not everyone has these issues, but it seems like most consle players, especially those with higher end consoles for some reason are experiencing low resolutions and horible textures. This game runs at 720p on a PS4 Pro. The cutscene look atrocious across the board though, but on pc the game has much better graphics.

In terms of gameplay, it feels like it has removed a lot of what made just cause 3 and 2 so fun. There is no liberating bases any more. That’s right. You are given little motivation to blow stuff up in a just cause game. Each region requires one crap mission to take it over, useally defending a terminal and that’s it. While the new weather is cool, other than the tornado it feels underused. The guns don’t feel as impactful as just cause 3 same with the teather. Everything feels to light. The driving is improved somewhat, but the lack of any options to change controls for anything is annoying. The explosions look cool, but until they patch it on consoles I would avoid it.
Also the AI is awful, running off cliffs and crashing into each other for example. Honestly a massive disappointment. The only real positives are that the map is Niven and diverse, and the balloons are a fun inclusion. That doesn’t make up for the fact you are given nothing interesting to do in the map however. The game can be fun, but not until they fix it. Avoid until patched, and even then, expect something worse than previous entries.

The game is in early access state. My advice is wait to buy this one - wish I did. My sense is they needed to sacrifice graphics quality substantially to support the physics and framerate. Graphics-wise, I was expecting a Ghost Recon Wildlands quality world - not even close. As for story/missions, so far seems to be very weak. Game needs another 6-12 months of development.

It took me a while to get into JC2 but ended up loving it. Was eager for the follow up and wasn't disappointed by JC3 as it improved the previous installment in every way. So I had been looking forward to this forth installment since I heard about it. However I was so disappointed after playing and ended up making notes of my thoughts as I played through:

    The Opening
    -------------------
JC3 - Lovely cinematic movie introducing the main characters. Riding on the back of a plane with a rocket launcher; over the top and fun (what you expect)
JC4 - Gentle walk through some snow (seriously?)

    Weapons
    -------------
JC4 - Removed the C4 and Grenades and replaced with a terrible 2 gun swap system & upgrades to the grapple; possibly okay if you're just going around aimlessly to have fun, but useless and not really required during the game. It's also complicated to switch between and remember what each one does during play. Also due to the stupid weapons system you end up constantly looking around for damn ammunition

    Map
    -------
    JC3 - Full of villages/different military base types/collectibles/etc.
JC4 - One big Black Hand base per area and very little else

    Game Progress & Design
    -------------------------------------
JC3 - Liberating lots of smaller locations; each with items that needed to be located and destroyed; fun and gave you a sense of progress & accomplishment
JC4 - Nothing; technically majority of the missions can be completed without blowing stuff up and just activating a few consoles; as no real record of progress for destroying stuff it feels very flat and pointless. When you do go to destroy something half the time it seems to be surrounded by those on your own side, which again makes it feel flat and pointless in doing so

JC3 - Lots of extra tasks to complete; i.e. collecting audio tapes that built on the background story, points on the map to find. Those I didn't much like (the wing-suit and flying challenges) could be skipped as there was so much else to do and these weren't an integral part of the game (although the ground races were fun)
JC4 - Nothing much to do on the map (apart from the main bases) and some stupid 'making a film' set off side tasks that mirror the wing-suit and flying challenges.

JC3 - With the garage mechanic you had a reason to explore the map for new vehicles and take them to the garage; again a sense of progress and discovery / collection
JC4 - Absolutely no reason to go looking for cars as no real challenge relating to them (apart from needing specific vehicles for the Movie sub-plot, all of which seem to be sitting conveniently next to the task). Might as well order up a helicopter or use the wing suit to get around. No real incentive to explore the ground / main map areas

JC3 - Well designed map and game interface
JC4 - Atrocious mix of menus and key presses were constantly going into the wrong menu section and even when in them just seemed thrown together and generally an ill thoughtout mess

    Longevity

JC3 - Even after completing the main story-line I still wanted to go back and finish the other elements, ie. find more of the vehicles, make sure all audiotapes and collectibles had been found. Eager to pay for and download the additional DLC packs for more fun
JC4 - Struggled to keep playing after a couple of sessions as it felt like a massive downgrade on the gameplay and quite frankly f***ing lazy design

Since making these notes I have downloaded and installed two patches and tried to go back to the game, but just leaves me cold and incredibly disappointed.

Just Cause 4 is what I imagine mid 2000's outraged old people think video games are like.

It's so bad I'm just gonna list all the cons, no time for a whitty review: There is no plot to speak of, the characters are dull and bland stereotypes of some of the most played out archetypes out there, the world feels empty, every mission is a side mission, there is 0 gameplay variety, the game

Oh and here are the pros:
I had a total of 15 minutes of fun... during my 10+ hour playthrough. I also got a cow gun, that was semi-cool.

It's essentially the B-roll footage that gets left on the cutting room floor of a Michael Bay movie.
    Yet another **** PS+ game.

Let me just tell you this is NOT a Just Cause game. The earlier games were based off of more realistic weapons and such... thats why i enjoyed the game but then you add these weapons and rocket suits... stupid.... instead of just cause they should call it just stupid. story was also crap. played for about an hour and i was shocked to see how far this game fell.

I don't even know where to start. Outdated graphics, repetitious game play, a lot of bugs, uninteresting story. It is a big step down from Just Cause 3, which wasn't perfect, but I consider it a good game. It is overall an uninspired, boring game

Just Cause 4 is just another sandbox game that brings nothing new to the table. If you are looking for mindless destruction with a terrible story, this is a game for you. If you’re looking for something deeper, look elsewhere.

If it continues like this, the series will die.

A shallow yet occasionally thrilling sandbox that doubles down on explosively stupid antics. The campaign is too grindy for its own good, and Rico's looks are fading, but this B-tier open world can still charm. [Issue#158, p.78]
