While the missions and story of this game leave a lot to be desired, the open world and toolkit that they player is given right from the start just about makes up for it. The only problem here is that the gameplay, despite being fun, is so shallow that it won't hold your interest for very long and you will soon look elsewhere for a game with more bite.

Voice acting is poor and cringey, the story tries to be more deep and interesting but just ends up being more boring than the other ones, the game looks nice but has too many technical issues. It's a combination of all these things and more. I got this game for free with PS Plus last month and I have to say that I'm glad I did because if i had paid full price I would have been thoroughly disappointed. Pick it up on sale or when its price is reduced if you want a game to run around and blow stuff up, but don't buy expecting a fully polished and expansive game like 1 or 2. Expand

The game is cool, its gameplay is ok, its destruction is VERY COOL, however ... The game is just another generic game. A **** character returns to its origins, fight and is invincible, play without difficulty. His characters are generic, his story is generic. Just play the game and be happy.

The story wasn't outstanding but I thought it was more then acceptable to help make you podder your way through the world. The wingsuit allows for some thrilling tactics when attempting to take over bases and allows for some really fun experimentation. This game is just screaming for multiplayer!! + Great and Funny Mobility

Game had great potential, and it looks gorgeous at time, but the sluggish mission which has to do with the main story is just right down awful. In a game where destruction is a virtue, the game literally forces you to be very careful, and with the AI being pretty dumb it will make for hours of repetitive gameplay (which kinda ruins the experience).

I would like to pretence this review by stating that I have not yet finished the game (though I have it over 50% completed at the point of writing this) and I also have the gold edition which means i have been able to play the DLC as well as the vanilla game.

    Now, on with the review.

Just cause 3 is a wonderful edition to the series as it fixes various problems that made just cause 2 almost unbearable. One of my biggest gripes with just cause 2 was always how repetitive the process of [Enter village] > [Kill enemies and destroy chaos objects] > [Find collectibles] was. All villages were practically the same and there were far too many. The balance between doing missions and discovering new locations was completely tipped to one side constantly and it made playing the game a chore after a while. Let it be said that i did beat the main story of Just Cause 2 and i beat most of the other missions in the game as well, but i still hadn't completed the game 50% at that point and there was literally nothing else to do but find collectibles and discover villages.

Now where just cause 2 fails in that regard, Just Cause 3 shines like a newly born sun.
This game perfectly balances the discovery/collectible hunting with the in game missions and the challenges are such a welcome addition I'm actually willing to forgive this games framerate issues.
In just Cause 2, you get weapons and vehicles by purchasing them with money made through destruction and completing missions. In Just Cause 3 there is no money, instead you get access to something called a 'rebel drop' and a limited number of flares (which are used to summon the rebel drops) which you can restock from military bases once you've conquered them. These rebel drops will allow you to summon any of the vehicles or weapons in the game as long as you've completed the necessary requirement for unlocking them (such as conquering certain military bases or doing certain missions or in some cases, finding all collectibles in a region). This is (in my opinion) a far better method of obtaining gear and vehicles than the currency system in the 2nd game.

To make up for a lack of discoverable locations this game introduces challenges into the mix from which you receive 1 to 5 'gears' for 'gear mods' (explained below) based on your score/time in the particular challenge. Challenges range from air, sea and vehicle racing to destruction and shooting gallery. All are unique and offer actual challenge.
The result of your hard work in these challenges earns you gears, which will unlock 'gear mods' once a specific amount of gears are gotten in there relative challenge. Gear mods are another fantastic edition to this series, as they give you a real sense of achievement and progression as you complete each challenge and unlock more upgrades for your characters abilities.
Almost every single tool at your disposal has gear mods, be it vehicles or your own tether and bombs.
This is by far one of my favourite editions to the franchise.

The story and characters in this game are absolutely wonderful and memorable and the dialogue is just as cheesy as it has always been in these games. Di Ravello is a great villain and his tapes (which are collectibles scattered all over the map) are some of the creepiest things I've listened to. Rico is a great protagonist as he always is, and Sheldon is just as crazy as always. There are plenty of other great characters in this game that i wont spend the next 1000 words talking about.

The amount of features this game adds as well as the many it has fixed from its predecessors is beyond incredible and speaks to the level of dedication that Avalanche went to for it's community to make this the best game it could be for them.

I have had a lot of fun with this game so far and From what I have seen and played, I would honestly be doing the creators a disservice if I gave this game less than a 7. A feel an 8 perfectly represents my personal opinion of this game as I see it, so there it is.

This game has so many dumb problems right from the start. To liberate outposts you have to destroy objects. Not just any objects or lots of objects, SPECIFIC objects. So you have to FIND them. How? oh yeh the devs didn't think of that - THERE IS NO MINIMAP!!! Why??? You have to press the touchpad to open the full map all the time. That's bafflingly idiotic design choice #1.

Bafflingly moronic design choice #2: To get upgrades you have to challenges throughout the world. Everything you destroy gives you chaos points which are constantly popping up on the screen. What does that do? Nothing! Why don't they just have an exp system to get upgrades using these chaos points? That would make too much dam sense apparently! Do the stupid challenges instead.

Also the loading times are really long and the controls are quite annoying with too many actions mapped to the same buttons. There is no zoom/lock/sights button because every button is already used.

The random open world tethering and blowing things up and the rocket packs ets are fun but trying to do anything else in the game is a waste of time. (It goes without saying that the story is pointless)

It is Just Cause - just that something is lacking. It can't quite catch the original's, or the sequel's, magic.

Just Cause 3 is a disappointment in every single way. It's nowhere near what was achieved last generation with Just Cause 2 in every regard save for story, which isn't even what we're here for.

The story is longer, sure, but it's nothing really substantial. They tried to make it more in-depth than 1 or 2, which is a misstep since we aren't here for the story. We're here to blow things up. The story isn't even that good, anyway.

Speaking of blowing things up, the graphics and physics have been upgraded significantly at the cost of everything else. Sure, there are new ways to blow things up and cause havoc, but there are less things to blow up now. The shooting controls are wonky and garbage, too.

The grappling hook got an upgrade, allowing you to pull two object together which is good for either slamming helicopters into the dirt or making a man realize his passionate and irresistible love for a brick wall, and you get a wingsuit now, which is probably the best addition to the game ever. Soaring around through the skies and low to the ground, using my grappling hook to pull myself along and propel myself at break-neck speeds straight into a wall is always lots of fun, and beats the hell out of the parachute grapple system in Just Cause 2. It just sucks that there's literally nothing to do with it.

The in-game map is about half the size of Just Cause 2's, and with no variation. In Just Cause 2 you'd have suburbs, cities, swamps, marshes, grasslands, forests and jungles, tundras, mountains, deserts. Basically every biome you can think of. In Just Cause 3 you have farmland and... more farmland. That's actually the only thing you got. No different settings and no unique locations. Just Italian farmland and I guess one metropolitan area that's about a 6th the size of the one in Just Cause 2.

Vehicles aren't that special, either. Helicopters, planes, cars, boats, whatever. Would it kill you to give me a submarine? This is literally the one thing sandbox games are missing now. I can't think of a single sandbox game with a submarine except for Mercenaries 2 where you'd drive a tank backwards and it'd let you drive it underwater. Also, I have no idea how they managed it, but they made motorcycles control even worse in this game. I didn't even think that was possible. There's a good half second delay between you turning and the thing actually turning, and it makes the things completely unusable.

Getting rid of the annoying redneck black market guy was a good idea, since finally you don't need to listen to him blabber on about his opinions on foreign policy and how he really, REALLY likes Mexicans but thinks they're ruining the country, added with a cutscene of him arriving then leaving. That was appreciated, and the whole process is expedited by allowing you to select multiple items to drop at once, and there isn't a huge cutscene for it either. You just hit the menu, order what you want, throw a beacon and in seconds, BOOM, package delivered. It's even faster than Amazon Prime, which is great.

Back to bashing it. DRM is a new innovative addition to Just Cause 3. The game requires you to connect to some stupid servers so you can constantly be harassed with in-game notifications telling you that XxStuPiDHackINGA**wiPE420blaZEitSniPERPwnEr69xX beat your score in who the god damn motherf*** even cares. You can't even turn them off, either. There's no option for it. You can try to start the game in offline mode, but get ready to stay signed off for your entire play session, because if you think you can sneak past it by logging back on after you start the game, think again. The game will actually stop you mid-game in order to connect to the servers, something that oftentimes doesn't even work, and even when it does it takes about 5 whole minutes to actually connect. Nobody asked for this. Not one person on this planet asked for this DRM bulls***, but they just crammed it in for no reason just to piss everyone off.

Overall, however, the game is disappointing and lackluster, with none of the fun and glee of its predecessor, choosing instead to boldly innovate in the daring field of being more boring and homogeneous. It's tiring, monotonous, and will not keep you invested after the game's end. I can't even guarantee it'll keep you invested up to that point, either.

I played this game, maybe even had fun with it while I did, but when I sat back down after the whole thing was over, I saw no reason to ever go back to it, and all its glaring faults cover up almost everything this game does right.

    TL:DR

Even on a huge sale, this game is a letdown. Whilst it can be seriously funny at times, it can also be a rage inducing and frustrating hulk of a game that is barely good enough to be considered a Just Cause game.

Sadly, this game is a mere shell of its forming self. Don't get me wrong, I loved the JC series since the original and I had high hopes for JC3 and I would have pre-ordered it myself if it wasn't for all the negative reviews, and to be honest - it really does warrent a negative and a not recommended review simply because of all the major bugs and issues which plague this otherwise *fun* game - My tip to Avalanche Studios is to go back and play JC2 and look what made that fun, then repeat the process because what you've done to JC3 clearly doesn't work. All you need to know is basically Just Cause 3....is just like Just Cause 2, just better graphics but all the fun sucked out of it and replaced with a dull, boring and vastly unfair gameplay that seemingly resembles a just cause game.

The major problems is the fact the game does not play like the previous JC games, its more or less just an unfair and buggy shooter, the enemy AI is so badly programmed that its just sheer lazy - its got all the trademarks of just horrible programming, they'll shoot you with near 100% accuracy even flying at high speed with the wingsuit - they'll spawn behind you constantly and don't get me started about the helicopters and warships.

Hijacking was one of the fun, and major elements to the previous games - thats been thrown completely out of the window and made USELESS here, try to hijack and enemy helicopter and 9 out of 10 times, it'll end in death as either the pilot will seamingly commit suicuide by flying into the ground or some other stupid method to kill you, or the "2nd" Helicopter will fire on the one your trying to hijack and again, often destroying it (and you) in the process - lets not forget, the enemies have a strange 90* degree firing arc for some stupid reason as well, because I've seen them facing one direction and rockets flying from them at an angle...go figure? Then, throw in enemy ships that are just insanely deadly into the mix..basically have to accept the fact they are going to kill you.

The driving mechanics are sluggish, especially on motorcycles. The boats have issues too, especially with Rico walking at a snails pace onboard them. Even the trademark tethering system isn't without some issues, often causing either bugs or comical incidents.

Avalanche removed many features that made Just Cause 2 a better game, such as the minimap - this was an important feature and you could actually see the enemies being rallied against you, so you had at least some time to mount a defence, or plan your attack better - this is just an unfair run and gun affair without any cover system, because frankly - the way the enemies have a near 100% accuracy against you...you need it. Having enemies literally spawn just out of view...nearly constantly ruins the immersion and really makes the gameplay needless more difficult and frustrating especially once your chain stunned by shotgun guys, or being bombarded by helicopter or tanks.

Sadly put; If your interested in the Just Cause series, and never played any- Do yourself a favor and pick up Just Cause 2 sure, the graphics are obviously inferior, but the game is vastly better in all departments over this. This is basically almost a carbon copy just half as good as the previous game.

Finally, this is just a disappointing game that needed alot of balancing and bug fixes which it never got, looking at the metacritic reviews and steam forum complaints really only re-inforced this negative review, I'm glad I only paid $20 for the XL edition because, honestly - to me thats about how much its worth. This game needs balancing to be good, enemy accuracy needs to be lowered, the heat needs to be slower to build - the spawn rate needs to be lowered, especially on helicopters and tanks, and they need to have a spawn rate thats alot further from the player inside of being 'behind' the player, so they can get essentially free hits on you.

    Pro's

    Fun with plenty of mayhem
    Plenty of Vehicles to drive
    Large open world
    Great graphics

    Con's

    Unfair game mechanics
    Enemy accuracy is too high
    Spawn rate is too high
    Enemies spawn behind you
    Can be hugely frustrating

Waiting an entire year to buy Just Cause 3 for $15 during PSN's black friday sale was a great decision because this game is not worth $60. Somehow the developers made this game less fun than Just Cause 2. The game has such a simple formula, how could they mess it up?

First we should consider how Just Cause 3 is not much of an upgrade from Just Cause 2. The graphics are better yes, but

First we should consider how Just Cause 3 is not much of an upgrade from Just Cause 2. The graphics are better yes, but all current gen games look better than last gen games. The game does itself no favors by re-cycling not only buildings but also entire towns. Despite the power of the PS4, the destructible models remain limited to radar dishes, fuel tanks, and water towers. Some destroyed vehicles will split in two, like helicopters, and some destroyed vehicles are blacked out versions of the original, like all the other vehicles. Enemies have the same 360° binocular vision that they had in Just Cause 2. This time, however, if you manage to stay out of sight on a rooftop for 30 seconds they can't find you. A.I. in general is dumb. Enemies will bomb their own sites and shoot rockets at their own vehicles if you are in close proximity. It used to be that you could hijack a helicopter and wreak havoc. Now when you grapple onto a helicopter, all enemy units will destroy it within seconds. Enemy fire and explosions can be so intense that I often had no idea why I was dying.

The story missions in Just Cause 3 are ok. You pal around with a guy who says "It's a me, Mario", a joke that was presented better in Assassin's Creed 2. Mario is not much of a revolutionary fighter, and everything is up to the player character to save the day. Most missions make use of hijacking vehicles and otherwise using your cable to stop vehicles, open doors, or reach high places like Spider-Man. Side note: there are tons of weapons in the game but I cannot see why I would use them when the cable, rocket launcher, and machine gun are so effective from the start. Further side note: why would I ever order a vehicle for delivery when the game is also littered with all kinds of vehicles. The mission structure at times seems broken. One missions tells you to grab a vehicle. I start heading to the nearest military base to grab a tank and the game tells me I am going to far away form the objective. Too far away? In an open world game? Heresy.

The side missions in the game are little more than challenge modes. Sometimes challenges are fun like in Saints Row III. Sometimes they are a boring waste of time, as they are in Just Cause 3. One side mission has the player character drive a boat to explode-able objects, switch to the gunner seat, and then blow up the object from a stationary position. So fun. Last side note, finding all the objects you need to destroy can be a real fun killer. Speaking of fun killers, the game gives you three remotely triggered explosives. You cannot zip around town like Spider-Man, attach explosives to everything, and then destroy it all from safety. No, you can only destroy three things from safety and then you have to go back and attach explosives to three more things. The developers had no idea what makes this game fun.

So all in all, Just Cause 3 is a pretty meh and repetitive experience. It's too bad because Just Cause 2 was one of my favorite games last gen. Just another uninspired sequel that is making the current generation one of the worst generations in gaming history.

A Chance wasted! - But you should still buy it!!!!
I would love to give this game a better Review, but i can't. This game simply has too many problems:
    - framerate drops and overall bad framerate - sound problems: it's often hard to understand what the actors are saying - Story is too simple and makes no sense - Characters are very shallow and not introduced well enough - Repetitve

    - Repetitve gameplay: you free one base after another, after another, after another
    - Cars, planes and helicopters are useless, because you are totally overpowered an can fly
    - controls are lagging, specially when driving
    - car physics are bad
    - vehicle control is very simplistic and arcade (even for an arcade game).
    - game wants to connect and reconnect to the servers over and over again (even though this is a singleplayer game)
    - long load times - even when you are playing one of the challanges. which makes improving your scores a chore
    - the game feels disconnected and like a theme park. they tried to make the world feel alive, but it didn't work. Mainly because you are always flying around and spend very little time on the ground
    - This is a poor mans Far Cry 4

But like is said: YOU SHOULD STILL BUY IT. you will have fun. It's like fast food: the food is crap but you stuff your face with it anyways.

Although it gets slightly repetitive after a while, and there are a few bugs, you can easily ignore that given how god dam fun this game is. There have been complaints that the story missions suck. I have no clue what that is about. the story missions are great, and not very restrictive in how you go about them. To anyone considering buying this game DONT. It runs ok sometimes but usually like crap crashes a lot which over time corrupts your save game. Im at 99 pc complete and cant finish the last few challenges coz it wont save progress anymore and tech support is non existant they just dont care. Trust me and save yourself a big headache. Such a shame too coz i do like the game if it worked properly

For all its booms and bangs, Just Cause 3 is never quite the unrestrained fun-maker it threatens to be. Whenever Rodriguez dons his wingsuit, however, it positively soars. [Jan 2016, p.88]
