So yea, easily the weakest release in the GTA series (barring the first two of course, can't compare 2D to 3D). They gutted the single player experience and let only a hollow shell of what is used to be. GTA 5 is a masterpiece. The only things I didnt like about it were the music selection (really need 3 spanish radio?) and the fact a lot of the side missions were missing both in single player and online. I would have liked to see the side missions especially online for something to do in Free Roam. Taxi, ambulance, Police, firefighter, ice cream truck, etc etc.

The singleplayer part was great. The story is pretty good, but when compared to RDR, this pales in comparison. I would have liked more interiors in Los Santos though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's just cut to the chase

    Pros:

The open world is probably the most open world I have seen ever in a game, ranging from large city areas to the country side to a big a** mountain you can drive a bike down and never survive.

The story is quite good. Three main characters with different abilities and different lives somehow manage to brilliantly join together and make a great story of robbing banks and drinking alcohol..

Don't care about story? No matter, the missions are still absolutely stupendous even if you don't care about the dialogue in between. They start off slow showing you the basics of the game but eventually lead into you being surrounded by N.O.O.S.E after robbing a bank.

Finishing the main story is literally only half (54%~) of what the single player has to offer. One you finish, why not go rob some convenience stores, participate in a triathlon, or go buy all of those beautiful cars that are just waiting to be driven. And smashed. Maybe blown up. Whatever floats your boat.

GTA Online provides an AMAZING Open World, MMO involving experience. Whilst at first it may be a bit hard to get into, you'll soon find yourself going around and sticky-bombing everyone in sight and blowing them up. And better yet, there are many heists you can perform in to earn thousands, even millions, in.

Don't have time to grind for cash in GTA Online? Got some real cash lying around? Why not buy some Shark Cards to get a few million instantly. While some may consider micro-transactions a downside, it isn't hard to get money without them and also helps make sure any DLC is and remains completely free.

PS4 and Xbox One versions run on a beautiful 1080p resolution.

    Cheats. 'Nuff Said.

    Cons:

Controls can feel like your a tank sometimes, though not too often.

Whenever a new GTA Online (free) DLC comes out, expect some server issues for a day or two.

If you aren't careful, some characters can be unusable in the Story Mode by the end (Not a glitch, ties in with the story). I suggest looking up how to prevent this, or keeping a save handy right before the (kind-of) final mission.

"Next-Gen" versions don't add a large amount of new stuff compared to what the "last-gen" versions have and are getting. (Don't get me wrong, the first person is awesome and all, but another $60? Hmm, maybe not). If you haven't paid for the older versions, then you're good to go. If you don't mind re-buying the game, then that's fine too. I personally bought the game because of the 1080p graphics (call me a graphics whore)

The game only runs at 30 FPS. If you aren't a "graphics whore" then this won't bother you, but some may see the difference than say, Battlefield 4 at 60 FPS and this at 30. (I think BF4 is at 60FPS... Haven't played it)

Final Thoughts: GTA V itself is amazing. Nothing comes close. While the PS4 and Xbox One versions may not add too much new content, being on the latest generation of consoles may be a safe bet in case last-gen gets unsupported. The story in the game is good if you care, but if you don't, no need to fret as the amazing missions will be enough to tie you over for the whole game. And to top it all off, you get this amazing open world with so many places to explore.

GTA Online is an amazing expansion to the game, and while you may experience and issue or two here and there, these issues are very easy to get over and you will end up having a lot of fun. And while some may consider Hard to Soft currency conversions a downside, it helps keep all of the GTA online DLC free and make sure the GTA Online community doesn't get divided by who and who doesn't have this or that DLC.

I have decided to give GTA V + GTA Online a 9/10. On paper, the cons may seem like a big deal but once you sit down and play the game all of that just washes away and you become immersed in what this amazing game has to offer.

The game has so much things to do. The story is very entertaining all most of the time. The times that i found boring were mostly Trevor missions, i personally found them uninteresting compared to Franklin's missions and Michael's missions. Personally i find Franklin to be my favorite character. Even though the characters are meant to be dislikable to a degree, i find Franklin to be more of a character that I enjoy. The side characters that you will meet throughout your journey are also very interesting and i tended to spend a lot of time learning more about them. The gunfights are great in the game. The driving mechanics are some of the best in gaming and there is so much to do. This game is worth full price any day. I don't think it is worth it if you just care about the multiplayer, the multiplayer is honestly the weakest part of the game and i tend to spend most of my time in the singleplayer. The improvements from the ps3 to the ps4 are quite remarkable. The game is beautiful. Everything in the world is detailed and vibrant, The colors are right on point and the framerate stays respectable throughout the game. I would have preferred if the developers worked more to get the game sixty frames per second instead of making it 1080p. But i still think the solid 30 frames per second frame lock is fine. The story that the game tells may not be original in the slightest but it sure does manage to tell the story well. The Trevor sections felt less inspired compared to the rest of the game. He felt like he was in the game just to give the famous Grand Theft Auto rampages more of a plot behind it. During the story you will encounter heists and they are lots of fun. Online have been added but at this point in time while writing the review, i have been unable to access the Rockstar servers. The heists seem to be similar to what the singleplayer offers which is a great thing if you enjoyed them like i did. The online community tends to have ruined the experience for me many times. I am not saying that everyone there is bad but from my experiences most people tend to just shoot other people on sight which is understandable for an online for a game like Grand Theft Auto. The gamemodes available in the multiplayer all feel fun and add so much variety to the game. The game is filled with content that some people could take as offensive. I personally was fine with it because i see it just as a work of art that is not afraid to be uncensored. There is not really a way to avoid the offensive content in the game which could make some players avoid the title. The only time i had trouble with some of the scenes were in one mission that involved torturing a man to get information out of him. Some of the scenes of torture that you controlled were hard to watch at times. If you like singleplayer focused games and games with large open worlds. This game was meant for you. It is definitely worth the current cost of 60 dollars and you probably wont regret your purchase because of the amount of high quality content that is included in the game. Expand

While the car handling is phenomenal - all cars have different handling and feel representative of the type of car, trying to drive and shoot is simply horrendous and ultimately left me resorting to ramming cars and running over people.

The biggest letdown was the first person mode. I get what it was aiming for - a realistic approach, but despite this, I felt disoriented when I attempted to play wit h it. With the type of player control you have for GTA overall, third person is much more suited and flows much better.

That's about all I can say for flaws. Everything else is wort h the time and money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GTA games seem to get a 90+% review score by default, but what has really changed within the franchise since GTA3 came out on the PS2? The core gameplay (although much more refined in later versions) is very much the same as ever. This is the main problem with GTA these days. Apart from the odd spike (in gameplay) it suffers from being far to familiar in the gameplay department. Drive from dot to dot in order to advance story. Repeat. Great production but time for Rockstar to stop repeatedly polishing the franchise before it becomes a turd. Expand

What Grand Theft auto V does well, it does it expertly, and Rockstar are some of the best developers around. That is why it is somewhat perplexing that there are some very noticeable problems that seem like they would be well-within Rockstar's capacity to have handled better.

Grand Theft Auto V has strong strengths, like superb animation and graphics, great voice acting, entertaining characters, clever dialogue (and lots of it), good ole' dark humor, a vast and detailed open world that is a joy to explore, and a plethora of small details and features that make it the best GTA game yet to grace out gaming systems.

However, it could be that this unprecedented attention to detail came at the expense of other, at least equally important components. The story, despite having a strong concept, is very poorly handled. It has noticeable pacing issues and a severe problem deciding which antagonists to focus on. Simply, the plot has a dangerously crowded group of antagonists with too little context put to any of them. There are about eight different antagonists in the main story, and all of them get negligible context put into them. During my playthrough, I often forgot who the bad guys were and was only reminded when they randomly showed up. This is a critical failure that deals a pretty huge blow to the story. In general, the plot is a crammed and disjointed mess that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

GTAV is a very fun experience with lots of value. It has the most detail of any open-world game its size, and that is truly this game's greatest strength. It has funny dialogue, entertaining characters, very high production values and lots of GTA-style fun to be soaked up. It is just such a shame that it is marred by an especially poor written story.

(but don't expect RDR or GTA 4 mechanics) Game world is huge. But after 3 hours of gameplay it feels lifeless. Game map has no role on game progression. All parts of map are accessible. Almost all vehicles are presented from beginning of the game. And there is no more "i'll unlock other side of the map" motivation. Last and disappointing part of the game is driving mechanics. I think Rockstar tried to grab NFS and Midnight Club players with new car physics but i am out their scope. This game has too many casual design elements when compared to old GTA games. Non of these elements bothered me except driving. Driving the fastest car of the game nearly feels same as driving the slowest one (steering experience). The big problem I'm having with the game is that its impossible to play well first time through simply because of the controls. The is not a rant about aiming, it sucks as usual for console but I expected that.

With a touch pad and the option of first person there is no excuse for rockstar to completely ignore and only treat it as a button. There are so many way it could have bettered the game. I'm annoyed at the drop in the physics department in this game, I thought gta 4 was really showing what can be done with velocity and weight in cars but now we're being pulled back to playing with plastic bottles again. Way to go, screwing you're own games, maybe rockstar should consider selling out to blizzard or activision.

The characters are not funny, they suck in basic. Trevor, the only interesting psychopathic loony in the game doesn't stay on character enough when it matters. Micheal and the other **** puppet are just lame and weak.

Its basically gta 4, weakened physics for bigger more complex map and they've changed the characters around and recycled a lot of models like bridges, dumpsters and what not. They've just stripped out the things that make the game cool and replaced it with more eye candy for the general moron public. $$$.

I never had a PS3, went straight to PS4. If you've never played GTA5 before either then this is the one game you need to get for your PS4! If you like this sort of genre that is.

In addition to the PS3 version, this one also has a first person mode and updated graphics, and a few additional side missions.

Rockstar are genius, they have brought a new way to play this game and it really works. The graphics are superb. The characters are even better the second time round and I can't fault this game even if I wanted to.

The tiny little touches in the game really make it what it is, if you need proof, go onto youtube and search for them. The attention to detail is mesmerising.

Admittedly this time round I was starting to get bored of the story but the gameplay felt great as ever. First-person mode is a nice touch but doesn't add much in the way of immersion, especially when the mocap for the three protagonists is so detailed and smooth and this is primarily why I stick to third-person.

Antialiasing has improved significantly. I have a 720p television and I'm sure on a 1080p set it would look even crisper. FPS drops unfortunately occur in some of the busier parts of the city if you are driving super fast but this is not a regular occurrence. There is a fair amount of pop-in (sometimes) but nothing terrible, I hardly notice it now.

The most exciting thing about GTA V is the detail of the world and that is something best left for you to discover yourself. There is so much to do here besides the campaign so you won't be short of activities for many, many hours. I fail to see why Rockstar is pushing GTA Online as heavily as they are. Online is good fun but it lacks all the subtle touches of the main game.

I totally overlooked 4 and never thought twice about 5 on the PS3. However, all I heard about was how great GTA5 was?!?! Well, since it came with the Last of Us (which I loved on the PS3 - yet to play on the 4) in the bundle - I figured I would give it a shot - holy crap!!!! Talk about a whole lot of bang for your buck!!!

Since I have no true comparison to compare it to besides the turd burglars I had played in the past, I think I have had more FUN playing this game than most others in a long time. The replay value is just crazy - I love all the little side games. From playing golf to tennis to more of the true to story side games - this game has just about everything you could want in an adult, over-the-top video game experience!

Like I said, I didn't play GTA5 on the PS3 - so, if it's REALLY true that the graphics aren't any better than it was on the PS3, then that had to be the most amazing game EVER for the PS3 - easy. Reason being, the open world envirnment and attention to detail with a almost "existing on its own" AI world, I can't see what the complaint is about? If you already played this game on the previous console and are/were expecting something else - you are delusional. Why would you play something on the previous console and expect MORE? Also, why would you complain about how many different versions they release of it? Look at me - I never played GTA5 on the PS3 - and I freakin' think it is a blast!

The story is very amusing - definitely not a kid's game - and no, don't start coming down on it about the characters and and all of that - they are written and performed at a very high level. The heists and side games - switching from the different characters and so on is actually fun to do. Do yourself a favor if you haven't played this game yet and play it. Yeah, the controls are still CRAPPY - especially shooting while driving - but other than that it rocks!!!

GTA V is next to San Andreas the best in the series. The three characters add a depth of storytelling we have never seen in a GTA game before. The three characters add a depth of storytelling we have never seen in a GTA game before. Each characters story will appeal to different people and you will have a favourite by the end. Michael is the ex-gangster come family man who can’t escape the life of crime. Franklin is a black street gangster from the hood who wants better things but keeps a serious head about him and Trevor is the all-out psychopath who is funny and has a lot more under the surface. Each story arc unfolds beautifully through great cut scenes and some of the best missions I've played in a GTA game.

The heists are particularly impressive. You have to choose how to complete a heist, then gather the correct equipment for example stealing a submarine and gathering intel before undertaking the heist which will involve swapping between all three major protagonists. Missions are varied and I never got bored playing, when the game ended a wanted more which is a good sign considering I'd been playing for around 50+ hours which included messing around and some side quests.

The map is impressive, highly detailed and well designed, the different locations are all beautiful in their own right. The vehicles look and feel awesome and all have a unique feel when driving.

The graphics are a massive improvement over the ps3 version and more detail has been added. The first person view adds an element of freshness but is a slight gimmick as I preferred playing in 3rd person, but this is not a complaint as it's a nice additional feature. I liked switching to 1st person view in Helicopters for some reason, it just felt right.

The soundtrack is awesome as usual with many different genres to suit your mood. The radio and TV shows are hilarious and a joy to listen to while cruising around.

If you have not played GTA V yet I would highly recommend it. If you've played the ps3 version I'd say it is still worth picking up as the game is so well made and detailed. All in all a fantastic and memorable experience.

    • The second thing I like is that you are able to have a customization tool to change your character to a way that best suits you.
    • The third point is that the game its self is huge and gives you plenty of missions and side missions to do while playing through this
    • My last point is that the game itself is amazing the structure of the way it plays also with HD TV the graphics are immaculate and the design of the world is also very good it makes a game picturesque and runs smoothly.

    • The first thing I dislike is the wait for the installation it takes a while for it to download when I started to install it it took me up to at least three hours till its complete.
    • The last thing I personally dislike is the price of cars online because it costs to much and GTA isn't a game to really spam your money to a high amount.

This is my first review here on meta critic based on my first impressions of the game. To be completely honestThis is my first review here on meta critic based on my first impressions of the game. I have enjoyed what i have played so far of the Main story but switching between the characters interrupts the story and makes it less interesting and enjoyable to me especially when it forces me to play as characters I have no interest in to progress further in the story. To be completely honest though the reason I gave this a bad review is almost entirely the online multiplayer aspect of the game. GTA 5's Online game play is a joke when it even works! Trying to play with an open server i suffered through constant network errors and disconnects until finally getting it to work somewhat reliably in a private game with some friends. GTA V online is purely designed as a cheap cash grab gimmick. it lets you steal and test drive any available car in the game but if you want to permanently own most of the nicer more expensive cars you have to spend large sums of in game money to purchase them from a web app on your in game phone. In order to make the money you can do in game missions which take you to separate instances away from the main online server OR you can spend real money to buy in game cash. If you find a really nice car you like driving and you load into a mission instance the car disappears and you have to go find it again elsewhere which i suspect is an intentional aspect of the game to trick people into spending more real money so they can keep the car without loosing it. If you think about it the sole purpose of the missions is to grind for money so that you can buy the cars in the game so spending real money to buy the cars defeats the purpose of playing the online multiplayer at all. The missions instances employ unnecessary and annoying loading screens and menu navigation. The last GTA game i played and enjoyed was San Andreas where you could do missions like Vigilante by just hopping in a police car and then driving around chasing down criminals. I loved that, not this mission hub garbage. In the 4-5 hour span of time i played i only tried one race mission but it didn't let me use my car, instead it forced me to use a preselected car for the race / track that was the same care the other people racing with me had to use. If you are going to buy this game buy it for the story but save your money and don't buy into the online multiplayer gimmick. If your looking for a fun game to play with your friends look elsewhere. This is exactly what you want, if you want GTA V. The good: Pretty much everything about the single player. My complaints stay the same as they were on last gen. You have this huge world that is beautiful, and at times, proves to be alive.. the problem is.. half of the world has nothing to do in it. It's not a huge deal and many people love it. I do not. I want more to do in this world. But outside of that, it's a great game that I had a ton of fun playing on last gen, but can't find myself to drag it fully out for a second run.

The bad: The online. The actual 30 person online is very well done. The idea behind it is great and exactly what I as a player want. But the player base ruins it. They are busy killing each other in the streets, and farming the army base for jets/tanks and whatever else. The job lobbies are often empty, as people just ignore the invites. If you have 3 friends to do co-op jobs with, this won't be an issue.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I would like to say, that this game is great, but it's not perfect.
    Things good about GTA 5:
    1. The story line is amazing and uses all of the characters perfectly!
    2. The graphics are stunning and beautiful.
    3. The Driving, boating, flying, and skydiving are all amazing things.
There are more things good, but too much to list!
Some of the bad things about it:
    1. *spoilers* In the newer consoles you can play as animals, which I don't like... that you can't in the older consoles
    2. There servers aren't very good via connections, but they are pretty good.
There is more like I said, but this is all right now.

Amazing, outstanding, polemic, great argument and plot, memorable characters and most important: unforgettable. Perhaps since RE4, Metroid or even Ocarina i haven´t play a game like this. Some minor slowdowns that does´t affect the brightness. Los Santos is a really nice city that must be explored and lived.

I normally don't comment on the reviews others give, because most of the time I think that's pretty lame. But not giving this game the credit it deserves seems very odd in this instance. I played GTAV on PS3 and it was really good considering the age of the hardware. But this is just so much better on PS4 - to the point I think THIS is how it was meant to be played to start with. What are you getting? Well of course there are the enhanced visuals, the added missions and extra players in multiplayer (when it works mind you) - but there are so many little things. The cars all sound a bit different, some quite a lot so in fact... they sound a bit more real. The extra songs on all of the radio stations are a nice touch and being able to see the INSANE level of detail in first person mode is frankly worthy of buying the game.

Everything just feels in a way, how it should have, on last gen - it feels right. Nothing has changed with the story or the characters from what you would have played last gen. It is a really nice touch to be able to import your multiplayer character from any platform (I came from X360) and the added character detail really help - it showed just how freaky my character actually looked.

Really there is not a lot more to say. The negatives? Well if I had to nit pick - it is the same game just better.., and now and then the frame rate dips a tad.... oh and it annoys me that I cannot set my default car view to 3rd person and my walking to 1st.... but perhaps I have missed something.

At the end of the day - if you want a fantastic open world on new gen to lose yourself in, get this. You will not regret it.

Still no heist mode in multiplayer, it was supposed to be added a month after the first release and they never did it.

Again you really shouldn't buy this if you already played through GTA V on another system, it isn't worth paying full price all over again for what is essentially the same product you bought before. They didn't even TRY to make this an expanded edition, it is just a re-skin with maybe 5 bucks worth of DLC tacked on.

Having not played GTA 5 on last-gen consoles, I went into the PS4 version completely fresh. I had seen a few friends play here and there, but never delved into any details of the story until now. I can definitely say I'm glad I waited.

Now, by not having played the last-gen GTA 5, I can't really compare the graphics too much. There are plenty of image and video comparisons out there.

Now, by not having played the last-gen GTA 5, I can't really compare the graphics too much. There are plenty of image and video comparisons out there. And from what I've seen, the overhaul seems quite extensive. At any rate, the game is gorgeous on PS4. There are times when I'm walking around that I find myself stopping because of how real everything looks. I can't imagine what PC modders will do with their version when it releases. I imagine near photo-realistic if not photo-realistic fidelity. Rockstar says the game is locked at 30fps but there are definitely a few hiccups. It's definitely not Unity-bad by any means, but high speed chases/racing and traffic clutter and explosions can cause a few frames to drop. Most of the time, though, it is a pretty consistent 30fps. Think Assassin's Creed: Black Flag consistency.

At first, the thought of juggling three main characters in one story seemed overwhelming. But after playing for a few hours and realizing how seamless it was to jump between them all, I'm glad they made this decision instead of going into separate DLC chapters in the vein of GTA 4. The story itself is amazing, but I wasn't surprised. Rockstar has a reputation by now, and I didn't expect it to dwindle with GTA 5. The cutscenes, voice acting, and animation are all top notch. You know you have a riveting world and story when you're telling yourself "just one more mission" before bed to see what kind of crazy event is going to happen next. I find myself doing just that, much akin to my over zealous netflix tv show binges.

The biggest pull for me, though (and I'm sure for many other people who had already played GTA 5 on last-gen consoles) is the first-person mode. When this feature was debuted, all I could think about was "Oh my god, it's basically modern day Skyrim!". And...it really is. The attention to detail on all of the animations and movement really sells it. It doesn't feel like GTA with first person. It feels like a completely different game. And I love that about it. I will say, however, that getting used to the sensitivity and controls in first-person mode requires a little patience. I suppose I'm spoiled by Destiny and Call of Duty at this point, but the aiming and movement in first-person feels floaty, and I still haven't completely nailed it down yet. Thankfully, sticky-targeting still works in this mode though. And I will probably just continue to rely on that.

You're probably wondering why I'm scoring a 9 instead of a 10, given all the praise. Well, while the single-player I feel is near flawless, the GTA Online aspect is less than so. When GTA 5 was first released on last-gen consoles, I had heard about the GTA Online woes. The glitches, the crashing, and the long load times were just a few of the things people were complaining about, and it seems they have migrated over to this version as well. I, myself, experienced three instances of complete game freezing and two instances of network or disconnection errors just the other night. It can be frustrating, especially when the load times are so long. After the last error I ended up calling it a night, mostly because I didn't want to sit at the loading screen for another 10 minutes. When it does work, however, it works well. Lag is hardly ever an issue, and there is much to do and a lot of fun to be had while doing it. Rockstar just needs to get a bit more stability in place, and GTA Online (and GTA 5 as a whole) will be perfect.

The sandbox simulation of game is more of a game than the actual game. If i want to watch a movie than i go watch a movie. GTA for me has allways been like. you steal a car, you run over a bunch of people, you get stars so the cops will come after you, you try to do everything in your power to not get killed or busted. Thats it! the story does not matter. GTA is fun when you feel that you want to mess with stuff. GTA V is just like every GTA game ever made.
