    Overrated game.

It is not a masterpiece, but is a great game nonetheless. If the protagonist was not Kratos, the game would be just another one, but putting him in the game does not make the game any better.

Some great action setpieces, a pretty good story, lovable characters and mostly great humor bogged down by repetitiveness and random difficulty spikes that the player does not benefit from in a few small areas along with mediocre puzzles,

I think it is a decent game, but in my opinion slightly overrated. Story is okay, pretty solid actually. Gameplay is not very original and sometimes fighting system becomes very unfair. Open-world is just average with side activities like "kill 100500 Odin's crows". But overall this game is fine and entertaining and it deserve to be played

I decided to give this game a try at the end of 2021 - having never played the previous titles or even any game sort of like it. I'm a big fan of open world and adventure games and tend to avoid these sort of guided adventures - but the reviews are absolutely stellar and several gamer buddies suggested this as a good one to try - and it was $9 bucks.

I decided to give this game a try at the end of 2021 - having never played the previous titles or even any game sort of like it. I'm a big fan of open world and adventure games and tend to avoid these sort of guided adventures - but the reviews are absolutely stellar and several gamer buddies suggested this as a good one to try - and it was $9 bucks.

this is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played - hands down. The settings and the characters are all amazing , the voice acting and the story are incredible and the overall look and feel of every part of this game is truly awesome. Even though this play-style isn't really my thing I found myself enthralled by the story and had to keep playing in order to see where it all went - I genuinely cared for the protagonists and developed soft spots for the rest of the characters as well.

it helps that I am a huge fan of mythology and am already familiar with many of the gods and powers and themes that make up this game. A truly unique idea executed extremely well.

however - this typeof gameplay is not my thing. Having a main character who can't jump and walks like he is wading through knee deep vaseline is frustrating to me. I find the camera to be extra annoying and just wish it would zoom out a bit .. particularly during combat - but I made do and quickly realized that there isn't a lot of 'play' in this game - it's more like a heavily guided heavily scripted story that you guide your characters through. Every time I played this I would be slightly annoyed by just getting around and the camera during combat was just silly. I understand that this bad camera is apparently part of the charm of this game for many - but not for me. The lacklustre controls and repetitive nature of the combat caused me to drop this from a solid 9 down to a 7.

I really appreciated the level design in this game - even though you can't freely explore much at all there are still a ton of hidden areas and regions that you can have to come back to later in the game - after acquiring abilities and equipment that allow you to access new areas. This is maybe my favourite part of the game to be honest.

the boss fights - wow. again not the most entertaining as far as actual game play and skill go - but holy crap are they ever amazing to watch. I'll be honest the over-the-top death animations and R3 kills didn't do much for me - but that's just me and some kids really like that sort of thing.

final word - I almost think I would rather watch this as a series than play it as a video game. most of the time I felt like I was chained to the rails anyways and was just waiting for the right time to press X or press O - but the incredible level design and unique story overpowered any negative feelings I had about the controls and combat and I am pretty sure that I will remember God of War for a long time to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good story, decent combat that becomes tedious quickly, dialogue sometimes dubious, but generally alright, voice acting decent, yet what could be an overall sublime game, is detracted by a slow, and limiting pacing system. If I want to spend 30 seconds to a minute running in 'fast travel' or wait 2 minutes, idling on my phone, whilst climbing an elevator, then ill go the shops and wait in a line. I'm patient, but one can only endure so much. Expand

The story is promising, but the short length doesn't allow for proper development of the relationships between Kratos, Atreus, and other characters. The ending feels rushed, leaving you wanting more.

For me, one issue with the game is the amount of climbing you have to do, and the tight corridors that are present to allow the map to load. While it doesn't ruin the gameplay, it can disrupt the flow and immersion of the game. Furthermore, the world design of locations besides Midgard and Alfheimr could have been more creative. While the places you discover in the first few hours are unique and interesting, as the story progresses, they become less and less so. The semi-open world design doesn't enhance the overall experience for me either, as it makes the game more bloated with an unclear focus on what to do. While the side quests are interesting enough, the other activities aren't.

The combat in God of War is one of its strong points, with a fluid and responsive system that provides a variety of attacks and abilities to choose from. However, fighting multiple enemies can be frustrating due to the camera position and inability to cancel abilities. Additionally, the boss fights become repetitive over time, which is disappointing considering the potential for more creative and challenging encounters. Despite these flaws, the combat system still provides an enjoyable experience overall.

The difficulty in God of War is unbalanced, with a significant difference between the enemies encountered in the main storyline versus those found throughout the world. While the enemies in the story missions are relatively easy to deal with, the enemies found while exploring are often much higher level and require a significant effort to defeat. This can make it difficult to fully explore a place without feeling like the game is gatekeeping the player. While challenging encounters can enhance the overall experience, the unbalanced difficulty in God of War can be frustrating and detract from the exploration aspect of the game.

In conclusion, while God of War had its moments of brilliance, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The story could have benefited from more time to develop the relationships between characters, and the ending felt abrupt. However, the game's graphics are undeniably beautiful to look at, and the atmosphere of Midgard is truly immersive, transporting the player into the world of Norse mythology. The combat system is fluid and responsive, though at times frustrating, and the difficulty can feel unbalanced, making exploration less enjoyable. While God of War has its merits, I was left feeling somewhat disappointed and expecting more from such a highly praised game.

God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. God of War (2018) is a really good game but it’s hard to not be cynical, disappointed, frustrated and annoyed. This is what happens when you put presentation and story above gameplay and player experience.

First of all I have to say that anyone that ever said anything like ‘God of War is grown up now’ or ‘God of War is now mature’ has a bad memory, didn’t play the older games or is just an idiot. Second, why is this a God of War game with Kratos? I get that using that name and character brings some history, depth and built in fan base but this could have been its own new IP with new characters. We all know how much the AAA gaming industry likes to take risks so of course they are rebooting something instead. Third, why the hell is this being considered as one of the greatest games of all time and getting such high praise? God of War is the perfect game to pair with popcorn and soda. It is a blockbuster game – big budget, fun, highly polished but kind of shallow and not really special, amazing or interesting. If God of War is peak gaming then are good super hero movies peak film?

Let’s get the obvious out the way this game has really high production values. It looks and sounds excellent and made my PS4 Pro roar like a jet. The voice acting, sound effects and music is great. Everything is highly polished but it’s not that interesting. I’m not a big fan of the games art direction, a lot of the environments feel very similar and level design is kind of bland. It mostly loses the original God of War trilogy’s personality, variety, epicness, scale, over the top action and gore.

The story is fine but left me a bit cold. It starts off okay, although too slowly, and it ends well. However the majority of the game is just meh. I didn’t connect with things at all and wasn’t interested in the characters. Don’t get me wrong there were some good moments, humour and I liked seeing their take on the Norse mythology, unfortunately though it’s mostly forgettable and this why the ending probably didn’t hit as it was intended to for me. Also Atreus is annoying.

The game play has some problems and choices I just don’t get and didn’t enjoy. The commitment to the camera and the close over the shoulder view just doesn’t work for the gameplay. Not being able to see what you need too isn’t fun and it gets even worse in close spaces or near walls. Why can’t Kratos jump? It removes verticality from level design and combat and means platforming is just put in the bin. Kratos climbs so slowly too. Puzzles are underwhelming. The difficulty curve is poor with spongy enemies at first and then things just get too easy. There is all this different stuff to find and so much for Kratos to equip. Why is this crap even here, what does it add other than monotony and padding? I do like the way combat feels. The axe is fun and it hits hard. Everything feels like it has great weight and momentum to it. It doesn’t reward you for playing well though and starts to feel like you’re just going through the motions before the games end.

I think the original God of War trilogy is better than this and enjoyed those older games a lot more. It’s sad to see God of War lose its personality and uniqueness and become another big, homogeneous, cinematic, story driven, single player experience like the others by Sony. For me God of War (2018) is kind of forgettable and doesn’t have any replay value. Of course it is a delight for your eyes and ears. Of course it is impressive. Of course it is enjoyable, worth playing and I recommend it. But it is definitely not top shelf gaming or deserving of a place next to the all time greats.

But soon enough you start to realise that it's a pretty poorly balanced game. Some bosses don't pose any threat on a decent difficulty level, but then you encounter other sponge-like mid-tier enemies who refuse to die and make you restart the checkpoint 20-30-40 times even with the difficulty level dropped down to "story" which is meant for people who want to enjoy it without any struggles. Has anyone even tested it?? I'd be ok with that if it was a Souls game - no question here, you know what you're getting into, but GoW??.. At the moment I'm stuck at fighting two regular foes that keep killing me on any difficulty level and I can't proceed. Sluggish dodge system makes it hard to avoid hits and no matter how I combine my moves I keep dying time after time. On a "Story" level! Santa Monica took so much inspiration from other titles, why couldn't they reference Witcher 3's combat mechanics and overall difficulty balance?

There's A LOT of great implementations in this title, a lot. I keep finding great game design elements everywhere, but the repetitiveness, poor difficulty balance and sluggish combat system takes a toll on fun.

Cory Barlog and his team achieved what many thought impossible – despite having changed almost everything Santa Monica managed to preserve that elusive spark that makes God of War game feel like a God of War game. They created one of the defining titles of the current generation and a technical marvel whose stunning beauty in motion words cannot describe. And there’s one more thing. Barlog’s touching reaction to his masterpiece’s scores shows that even in the world of huge budgets, micropayments, loot boxes and sales forecasts there still is a place for artists who pour their hearts into their work. We need someone to remind us of that once in a while. [06/2018, p.38]
