While the latest fix did manage to make matchmaking much quicker, the gameplay boils down to "same **** different match" - a lack of variety, if you will. Until there is content to convince me to come back to this game, I'm done with it.

Note: Original review is based on the game state as of June 3, 2017.

To state it simply, this game is very much a hot mess.

    The good

When one is actually able to get past the (still) tremendously long wait times to join a game session and actually play a round (or hopefully more), the game itself is actually good. The game itself is a 1 vs. everyone else, where the one is Jason and everyone else plays as the camp counselors. Many of the counselors are in the game, each with their own stats that affect survivability. The same goes with Jason, having different versions from some of the movies and each version having their own stats and weapon.

There are currently only three maps, but each one is faithfully recreated from the movies. The counselors move in and out of the cabins by either the doors or windows, and can lock or barricade a door to slow Jason down. Jason can only enter through the doors, but can smash down doors that are locked or blocked. This requires several hits and Jason plods through the hit sequences.

Whether you end up as Jason or as a counselor determines how you will win. As Jason, kill the counselors, and be as creative or straightforward as you want - and use your Character Points to unlock more kills. As the counselors, survive by any means necessary - escape by car or boat, call the sheriff and escape by meeting up with them, or try to kill Jason (which requires a lot of coordination with the other counselor players). The counselors can use their Character Points to roll for perks that can be applied. Each perk has a positive and negative trait that affects some aspect of your character's stats as long as that perk is assigned to that particular counselor.

    The bad

This is where the game craps the bed. There are a lot of issues that have been outstanding since launch. For the first few weeks, there were login errors that were due to "the database not being able to handle the influx of players that were playing the game" (according to the devs, they only planned for ~30k players and they ended up having about 75k players trying to log on to play). The dreaded Cannot Log In banner was the result. A later update from the devs stated that they were able to scale up the database system, but some of the player data was corrupted and required manual interventions to fix it for the players affected. This is an example of piss-poor guestimation used by devs and publishers to determine certain online feature systems in which a bad guess costs them.

The most egregious issues still standing are lag and inability to join game sessions. This breaks down to two items - server bandwidth capacity and server capacity, respectively. There is nothing like waiting 15+ minutes to try and join a game session just to either keep waiting or something else happens and you get kicked back to the menus. I've been in a party with a friend trying to join a game and either we sit and wait forever, or one or both of us are unable to join the game session we were launching in to. FIX THIS ALREADY!!!

And LAG, sweet Jesus the lag. The lag can be bad to the point of near game breaking. In one of the games I was actually able to play, I was Jason and on two occasions in the same match I went to grab a counselor (and did) but couldn't perform a kill. I was stuck grabbing the counselor and the only way to get unstuck was to walk in to the lake to force a different animation (I was fortunate to be close to the lake). TWICE this happened!

If you miraculously manage to get in to a game session, and the host leaves the game, you get kicked back to the main menus. Why does this not look for a new host from the list of other players in the session? This is not a new function to multiplayer games, so join the party already!

    The ugly

It's become apparent that the devs bit of a lot more than they could chew, and now they are desperately attempting to fix their mess to appease the gamers to prevent them from abandoning ship. The constant social media messages of "We're fixing it" doesn't cut it. I get it, game development is hard, but if you aren't up to the task then don't bother.

    Verdict

Until the developers truly fix the issues with this broken game, avoid this travesty.

Let me just say that the game had potential and the idea was a great idea but it fell short by a gargantuan amount.
I don't care how many patches they've implemented.. games shouldn't need that many from the get go.
The game is utter trash. The servers suck ass, there's very few maps, the bugs are plenty, people can't play the game correctly and have to use party mics to tell locations

And now they are starting to charge for DLC that should be free with the **** we've had to sit through.

I'll NEVER buy another game from this ****fest company and definitely will warn friends about them.

I recently played a very similar game called Dead by Daylight, which isn’t very good, and unfortunately neither is this. When playing as one of the councillors most of your time will be spent wandering around the map searching drawers with the hope of finding items that’ll aid your escape. Occasionally you’ll run into Jason but these encounters, while tense to began with, quickly fall into a repetitive pattern. Should you die you’ll have to sit and watch the rest of the game, which could be 15 minutes or more, if you want the maximum XP reward. Playing as Jason, which you won’t get to do often in public games, is a little more fun but even then you’ll spend the majority of your time wandering around by yourself trying to find everyone. You do have a selection of special powers to assist in this search but they don’t do much to prevent the tedium of the long, lonely treks.

As with many games of this ilk I guess there could be some fun to be had with a group of mates but as a game Friday the 13th is a disappointment.

We're talking 15 minute matches sometimes. Whereas in Dead by Daylight the matches are quick and you get exp right away. You can't even by cosmetic items in Friday the 13 with an in game currency! On paper, this is one of the greatest game ever adapted from a movie or franchise. It would be awesome really if another company was in charge of this. Unfortunately for us Gun Media is probably the worst video game company ever, barely unprofessional and don't care about how broken the game is.
Full of glitch and with a toxic community for the most part, the game is barely unplayable.

Full of glitch and with a toxic community for the most part, the game is barely unplayable. When you can finally find a party and you'll not be stopped by technical issues, you found only morons trolls who have fun by doing crap all the party. But until the recent update this was still possible to play or at least expected to play. Now Gun Media have simply pulled out most of the bandwidth from Ps4 users to give it to their customers on Nintendo Switch. That's totally inappropriate and is a real bull**it since the game is initially intended to be a Playstation / PC / Xbox game not a Switch one that only emerge recently.
The game is basically dead now both on Steam and Xbox and will be soon receive the same treatment on PS4.
Additionally the Switch version is so ugly and have the same technical issues as the real game versions.
The devs are also lying by some statements as they can't add anymore new promised content due to the legal issues between copyrights olders and writer from the first movie. The fact is copyrights older have clearly stated that they don't want to stop these updates and these cancelled updates are in no way associated to the legal issues. So the devs are just too lazy to add the promised content to original users and focusing on the new cow cash from Switch. They even give new created content to Nintendo customers instead of delivering what they promised.
This kind of company must not be supported, don't be fooled by these scammers by avoiding this game. This is really sad since without this awful behavior the game would be a hit.

The few times I could find a lobby, which took me an average time of 10 minutes, I experienced a couple of disconnects, several glitches and partly game breaking bugs. Frustrating. Besides that you have to consider that the amount of content is very low (3 Maps, same beginning cut scene and same ending cut scene all over). So this game is far from finished and when you can´t even convince with content it should at least run flawless. I mean it´s pretty much delivered like one of these Ubi Soft titles, but seriously at least they do look good. The first game ever, I consider about getting my money back. Don´t get me wrong I see potential here but realization is more than sloppy. The price tag is very ambitious with 40€ and the game definitely can´t live up to that. Even if they fix the bugs, I can´t see more than a 15-20€ game here. But bottom line (once again), don´t release unfinished games! I doubt that this game can recover from a really bad first impression...

    UPDATE:
After two weeks not much changed here. In fact my experience was even worse. Severeal disconnects during the games, even longer times to find a lobby, no patch so far. Sorry, but the time i could actually play the game was so rare that I finally dropped out. Maybe with future updates the game becomes fun to play if it´s not dead by then but it is absolutely not worth the price.

I am not rating this based on the few glitches that will be fixed. I am sad because there is the framework of a good game but because of bad decisions made by the creators I am giving this a score of 4.
The game mechanics are flawed and unbalanced: 1. God frames are when a character does an animation in which they cannot be damaged. So if Jason starts a long animation where they pick someone up you cannot damage Jason. 2. Weapon animations are too slow and unresponsive meaning that a player counselor is unable to hit Jason when needed. This could be balanced by making characters with higher strength attack quicker and keeping low stenght characters this way. 3. Because there are so few ways to escape it makes it so that what you do becomes predictable making the game less fun. Everyone typically works on the car. 4. Jason’s Teleport is OP to the point where you cannot get away. I think that ruins the fun. A way to balance this is by causing Jason to knock down a player and stun then instead of allowing for an instant kill or limiting they instant teleport kills to 1 per game.. 5. Sneak speeds are too slow… making stealth Gameplay a pain and not fun. Jason’s Sence ability is OP so it does not really work anyway. 6. Jason’s grabs are unbalanced so they all can instantly kill a character upon grab (God Frames). This could have easily been solved by limiting these instant kills to once per round and by making the rest of these kills forced to be an environmental kill. 7. When you knock-down Jason recovers way to quickly (about 3 seconds) this could be counter balanced by making stuns last longer and even giving character’s with high strength additions time for stun attacks.

You scavenge for parts to help you escape but, GASP, there isn't enough space for EVERYBODY!? This mechanic was actually kind of nice, and it speaks volumes that they built an asymmetrical multiplayer system where it doesn't take perfect teamwork to succeed (because lets face it, that doesn't happen with public matchmaking).

On the side of Jason, you feel like an unstoppable killing machine. In this sense it is VERY similar to Evolve, however instead of being on the defensive from the start you simply build up to your more insane powers the longer the match drags on. It's probably the thing that works best, and its a true joy to play as the iconic killer when your turn comes up.

However that is infrequent (random selection and chances are 1/8) so settle in for some horrible facial animations because every counselor has them and you'll be playing them A LOT. Seriously, one of the first orders of business should be a boss mode style match, where its Jason V Jason V Jason or something, because as of right now the best part of the game is the smallest part of your play time with it.

This is a game you may want to wait on, but at the same time you risk never playing it while the community is thriving by doing so. Its tough to recommend a buy because while the formula is fun and works well, there just isn't much to it. There IS a surprising amount of progression and unlockables, which was a nice touch that I wasn't expecting, but its a thin veil for the lack of gameplay options.

Devs promise some good post release support, but have also mentioned several times that they were running into issues with console updates, so expect PC gamers to get the nod here for early content access, and perhaps even exclusive content.

Overall I'm a fan. The sound is good, the graphics are passable but there's nothing quite like the feeling that you're IN a Friday the 13th movie, frantically running for your life. A+ for the presentation, and by far the best game this movie has ever seen made in its honor. 7/10

Not because it actually does anything all that different from its competition, but rather the simple fact that it's based on one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time. The faithfulness to the property alone made it more enjoyable for me than the likes of Evolve or Dead by Daylight, despite those also being decent games in their own rights. Yet, being better than the rest doesn't mean that Friday the 13th managed to escape all of the problems that these kind of games are accustomed to. So the amount of fun you'll have will still vary wildly from match to match.

I found playing as a counselor to be the more consistently entertaining of the two options. You're given a lot of different ways to survive Jason's onslaught. A bare bones tutorial means that you'll have to figure out most of this stuff on your own, but discovering how all the different things you'll come across in the environment can be used to aid in your escape or defeat of Jason can be very satisfying, tense, and rewarding so long as you aren't killed at the beginning of the match and get to participate in putting all of the pieces together at least a little bit. Which kind of leads to the biggest problem on this side of the game. Playing as a counselor is obviously designed with teamwork in mind, but as anyone with any experience with multiplayer games will tell you even while being chased by a nigh unkillable brute in a hockey mask it's often your own teammates that will be your worst nightmare.

Coming across a group of high level players that like to hog all of the good stuff for themselves while berating the less experienced around them who are just trying to participate is no fun whatsoever. Mix that in with the game's already steep learning curve and one or more bad encounters like that could turn away some newcomers. Now, not everybody will have this problem. There are those who will come across longtime vets who are more than happy to show them the ropes. Unfortunately, it will just come down to luck of the draw as the big trade-off that comes with going online in any form is that at some point you're going to come across a jerk or two. I'm not saying that the asymmetrical multiplayer genre is more prone to these kind of encounters, but when the most enjoyable experiences I've had with these types of games were in matches where nobody was wearing a mic and we were all largely doing our own things, well, that should tell you something.

With the offline option being plagued with AI so bad it's outright unplayable, those wanting to go strictly solo are going to have to hope they get selected to be Jason. While it can be a lot of fun to rampage your way through Camp Crystal Lake leaving a trail of bodies in your wake, I did find that this side had the more flawed gameplay. Asymmetrical multiplayer games require a delicate balancing act of meticulously designed and interlocking systems to ensure that things remain fair on both sides of the experience. So it makes sense for the counselors to have a significant speed and mobility advantage over Jason considering that he's basically a walking, invulnerable death machine, but I don't see why his movements and controls had to be so stiff and clunky. This is somewhat offset by the variety of abilities at your disposal that vary across the handful of film incarnations you can play as, but those are rendered useless when faced with a player that is content to cheese the game by jumping in and out of windows repeatedly or running around a table until the clock runs out.

At it's best the game is an absolute blast. A lot of attention to detail was put into recreating the look and feel of the films, allowing it to pull off the tension and thrills of a good '80s slasher flick a nice portion of the time. The problem is that the experience is so darn inconsistent due to things like the stiff controls, connection issues, glitches, or potentially getting paired with toxic players. Because of that I can't wholeheartedly recommend it no matter how badly I actually want to.

The developers absolutely nailed the feel of the movies and Jason himself. All the counselors are charming in their own ways and the music is phenomenal. Which just makes it all the more disappointing.

I want to like this game, hell I want to play this game!

But I can't do either with the current state of things and over a month after release too. And the developers give absolutely no warning as to the state of the game, they expect you to buy the game as is and eventually they'll fix it. I do think they are genuinely trying to get the game to a playable state but they do not have the skill set required for this.

Progression: This game doesn't offer other reward than skins uppon reaching level 31 by unlocking the part 9 Jason, it only offers skins for the counselors, making it boring to the player to grind into the game an stick into playing it.

Bugs: There's a tooon of bugs on this game, starting from glitched kills from the killer preventing the Jason player to perform a kill by the counselor escaping from him due to the fact that jason can't perform any kill, specifically on the environment, and also glitches that the counselors can take advantage on it due to the fact of poorly placed invisible barriers on the map.

Report system: There's people inside of the game that act like they want, like on every other game, but the lack of support of the developers makes this game frustating to play due to the fact that you can get killed by another counselor by either being an ally of jason by telling him your position on the map or making you waste med sprays because of your dumb teammate.

Conclusion: The game offers lots of hours of fun, not gonna lie I'm personally level 88, but I always fell stressed out when I enter to this game due to the fact that there's not host migration, making me guess who is the host and hoping for him to not rage quit by either getting killed or by me, this game doesn't offer game support yet and the community never helps you when you are on a hurry against Jason.

A beautiful train wreck. A project of love with the best of intentions ruined by petty lawsuits and a company that wasn't able to handle how popular their creation became. This game is a brilliant concept that is executed (pardon the pun) fairly well. If this were released by a triple A game studio it would be a masterpiece. It's a ton of fun to play with friends. The community, like almost all online games, is pretty toxic. Not anywhere near as bad as Dead by Daylights game community. The different Jason's look amazing and all play with a unique style. The maps are amazing and the attention to detail from the films is a true joy to look at. A real love letter to the series. If only the game could have continued with new content. It never reached it's full potential and was plagued from day one by a company that wasn't able to handle the issues of this type of game.

That said, I still play it almost 2 years after launch weekly. It's worth a purchase or rental. I hope to see more asymmetrical games like this in the future.

As you probably heard by now, this game is unplayable. There are way too many connectivity issues and with progress not saving. I would give this game a higher score if it weren't stuck in "finding a session" for 5+ minutes each time.

The horror and slasher fan in me was literally giddy with excitement as I sat down to indulge in Gun Media's love letter to one of slasher cinema's greats.

For those not quite in the know (or for those who've grown up under a rock) Friday The 13th is a series of horror/slasher films starting in 1980 and centered around Jason Voorhees, a maniacal killer who drowned as a child in Crystal Lake while the camp counselors shagged like crazy. The first film saw his mother, Pamela Voorhees slaying the new camp staff one by one until she met her demise - and enter Jason.

Jason developed from a lonely, psychopathic survivor who sought revenge for the death of his mother into an undead behemoth seemingly intent on slaying anyone who crossed his path.

    Anyhoo, the game!!

Think Evolve crossed with Until Dawn and you're sort of on the right track with Friday The 13th. Seven players take on the guises of the camp counselors - all with their own stats and personalities, and one person becomes the eponymous Jason. His goal is to slaughter them all. The counselors have to survive or escape by repairing vehicles around the map, calling the police in or simply hiding until the time limit expires to survive the night. The only problem? Jason is out to eliminate them all.

Jason has some pretty cool abilities he can utilize and they explain certain aspects of the way he seems to be everywhere or in the right place at the right time in the films. His "Sense" ability allows him to see counselors hiding places which glow a deep red. That might seem like a massive advantage but bear in mind that the counselors can switch radios on or creep slowly to minimize the Sense ability. Play the radio in a cabin and Jason's Sense shows the whole cabin glowing red which means that there is somebody hiding in there - he just can't pinpoint where unless he enters and searches.

It balances out the fairness and means the protagonists have better odds of survival. Sort of.

Jason also has some other pretty cool abilities such as the ability to teleport to a chosen point on the map and a first person POV hunt cam which works similar to the effect in The Evil Dead when the evil force is travelling to the cabin. It's very satisfying hurtling along through the woods towards a glowing red camp counselor and grabbing them as you emerge from the first person POV.

So we move onto the kills. It wouldn't be Friday The 13th without some gruesome deaths and Jason thankfully has some awesome ones at his beck and call. The simple but effective choke and neck snap, ramming a machete down the throat, stamping on the face, ramming the head into a bird bath and then smashing a large stone over their head - the kills are lavish and beautiful and sound savage. It's particularly rewarding to use the hunt cam to fly through the map chasing a counselor and appear in front of them, grabbing them by the throat before uppercutting their head clean off.

Glitches do make the game occasionally annoying - connection issues still occur where you sit waiting to connect to a game for ages. But the love that the developers evidently have for the franchise shows through and with input from Tom Savini, Sean Cunningham and Kane Hodder himself, Friday The 13th : The Game is an exciting and fun jump into the horror set piece.

I followed the kickstarter but missed out on actually supporting them and buying the game back then. Anyhow, the game is fun, it does just what it set out to do. You try to escape by the means available in the movies or you die. When you are Jason you feel powerful and you get to scare the sh*t out of the campers. The only thing I am missing is a few more maps and some fixed glitches. TheI followed the kickstarter but missed out on actually supporting them and buying the game back then. The server issue was not a suprise and I can overlook that as it is a indie game. Bad thing for those who can't play at all though without a single mode (will come I know)

I'll take 2 points away from a perfect score, but the game does exactly what it promised and gives you the feeling of the movies in a game. Not exactly something that happens frequently in the movie to game world. FUN!

It’s too bad that there’s no challenge mode, but an asymmetric multiplayer game based on a movie is an interesting concept itself.

Friday the 13th: The Game is the closest you are ever going to get to being in a Friday The 13th movie. It's so realistic that I had goosebumps every time I saw Jason. However if you are playing alone it can get a little boring at times, and that makes me wish that there was a decent single player mode But with its authenticity this is the best Friday The 13th game that we may ever have and it will make every fan very happy.
