Musou game with lots of different characters from the Fate franchise to play with.

The gameplay consists in capturing sectors, each sector has a number of lieutenants that you need to spawn and defeat in order to capture said sector, this can become a bit boring since the quickest way to spawn them is by spamming EMs in order to clear the enemies on that sector quickly. The story is dreadful for most part and consists in a formulaic and mirrored plot for both Nero and Tamamo, which makes them look like walking toddlers, craving the attention of your character 24/7. Luckily the third main plot character saves the storyline for this game, as it changes the narrative a lot.

The game will offer many hours of gameplay and it can be worth it's investiment, but if you are not a fan of the Fate Franchise and musou games, it will become boring very fast.

Having played past Fate Games such as Fate/Extra, CCC, Heaven's Feel VN, and even the smartphone game that is FGO. I was super happy when this game was first announced. At first i was skeptic to see that the game would be a musou game, while it is a slight improvement from prior tittles such as Extra which has a rock, paper, scissor game mechanic, it left something more to be desired.

My first problem with the game is how old this game felt in the current generation of gaming, looking that this game does not offer any kind of online mode. The single player modes does offer a wholesome amount of content, how ever this is in my opinion a missed potential. The game also starts slow at first, having to need to go through an info dump for the first part of the game. The Camera in this game is also quite bad, i often find myself in an angle that is awkward to play in. Couple that with a horrible decision to make lock on only available on servants, even-though you have to spend most parts of the game mowing through mobs and aggressors.

The story itself i found quite interesting, however the way that they try to tell it in a VN style felt almost like it is forced. The options you make in the game also have little to no effect on the story whatsoever, which is slightly disappointing. The game does offer a good amount of characters in the roster, however most of them have almost no place in the story line. Side characters outside of the 3 Main Heroine are given side quest missions that is just basically just a copy pasted mission of the ones in the story line from their perspective.

I'm dissapointed on how this game turns out and i do not recommend it for anyone outside of the Fate Fandom.

A lazy PS Vita port that doesn't manage to succeed on any front, Fate/Extella had better been left on the cutting room floor.

Fate Extella is a good Musou and a good Visual Novel... but switching between the two genres often break the rhythm to the game.

I enjoyed my time with Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star as it satisfied my craving for a game in the Fate universe. The fighting controls are tight and responsive, and the action is intense. The lack of enemy variation was disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the frenetic fun of pulling off well animated combos against thousands of aggressors.
