They had the chance and time to make an uber-awesome game after the success of FC3 but they did not. Instead, it's a "been there, done that" in a slightly different setting, extremely lazy...using the exact same engine, same animations, same sounds..same idiotic stereotypes etc., same crafting system and so forth, and so forth. It's not that long I finished FC3 (which I loved!) and I am feeling I am playing the same game...and I am searching for improvements and new things but can't find them. While the game overall may be good (and of course for those who never played FC3) it deserves a mediocre rating alone because of the incredible laziness of the developers and selling it as something "new" which it really is not, by a long-shot. Finally a real AAA game from Ubisoft this year. This game is awesome, from graphics to story, the setting is amazing, emotional soundtrack, and Pagan Min is a great antagonist. So in my opnion, excellent game, I would give it a 10 if it wasn't the lack of innovations in the gameplay.

Although at first it feels like it borrows too much from its predecessor, "Far Cry 4" accomplishes the one goal games have been trying to do for years: experience your own story.

Loving the game so far, been playing for 13h and nowhere close to finishing the campaign missions.
So much more activities to do and really enjoying the smarter and more interactive AI which I thought I'd find annoying.
The new challenge is great and graphics are just phenomenal! Very impressed and enjoying every minute of it!!

The thing i like about ubisoft games is their designers sense of environment setup and localization according to the region. Ubi has done a great job of portraying Himalayas, Indian and Tibetan culture to the code. Game play is equally emersive.

Disclaimer: I would like to give this a 7.5 but the cons force me to round down rather than up.

Far Cry 4 is a fun romp through a well designed, well detailed atmosphere. Neither of these are foreign concepts to Ubisoft, as they've consistently designed amazing locales for both the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry series. Graphically, it looks great and the gameplay is the typical, somewhat twitchy, first person controls that Ubisoft still hasn't really nailed down as well as other studios. I absolutely love the music in the game as it genuinely compliments the locale and really helps immerse the player into the game.

Unfortunately, that's where my praise ends. Far Cry 4 suffers from the typical Ubisoft sandbox problem of cramming an insane amount of fluff in between a very weak, short, main story arc. If someone simply focuses on the story missions and the character named side missions themselves, the game could probably be completed in 10 hours or less. The rest of the time spent will be looking around a limited amount of side activities, almost all involving going to a point and killing enemies or defending a point or by racing, and (literally) hundreds of collectibles. Collectible hunting wouldn't be bad if they continually added to character growth but after a certain point they no longer matter. Trophies/Achievements generally require half (or less) of each collectible type to unlock and the "Karma rating" is easy to peak at max level before even reaching the northern areas of Kyrat. The player will earn more than enough XP to unlock every single skill long before collecting all of the hundreds of items so, outside of sitting in a menu reading a few context blurbs, there's little incentive to bother collecting EVERYTHING.

Ubisoft also needs to invest in writers who are capable of character development. Ajay Ghalle is a bland protagonist with whom I feel no connection or investment, much like Aiden Pierce of Ubisoft's Watch_Dogs title from earlier in 2014. Also like Watch_Dogs, the secondary characters are cliched and unremarkable. I feel no compelling reason to care about the Golden Path and their "leaders" do not help their case at all. The most charismatic and humanized characters are the so called villains - Pagan Min and Noore most specifically. While playing, I couldn't help but feel the game would have been so much better if it presented you with a path at the beginning where you could work with Pagan Min, Ghalle legacy be damned. This would have offered much more replay value and could have effectively turned FC4 into two distinct experiences - one as the returning rebel champion (the current game) and one where Ajay turns his fame into despotic power.

Then there's the stretching of the imagination. For a country embroiled in civil war for at least two decades and extremely remote (the area is basically supposed to be on the borders of Nepal, China, and India), I find it odd that many NPCs you run into will be up to date on technology and social media trends. Radio Free Kyrat's office is a falling down shack with a whole lot of technology in it and its DJ, the annoying Rabi Ray Rana, is constantly referencing "first world problems" as if Kyrat were a Mexican border town stealing U.S. Wifi while dealing with the Cartel. Given the remote tribal areas (look up Sikkim on Wikipedia for a sense of where this game takes place), these references make zero sense.

All that said, I still give the game a 7.5 overall because it's fun to play and the locale is so intriguing. Multiplayer is hit or miss and coop is particularly fun, except for the fact that Hurk is annoying as hell. Even though it's pointless to collect everything, it's fun to collect enough to learn a decent amount of Kyrati history. Being sent into other places like Shangri-La and The Himalayas adds another layer of depth to the game that makes it stand out. In fairness, the Shangri-La sections were, quite possibly, my favorite moments the game had to offer. Frankly, if you look at my review tendencies, you'll find that a 7.5 is actually fairly favorable, overall.

But it does get repetitive, and fast. Ultimately, that repetitiveness, plus the very weak story, the continued twitchy driving controls, and the idiotic "lets throw 1000 pounds of armor on heavy mobs to make them 'harder'" Ubisoft mentality make me drop the game down a few notches. It's still very much worth playing, perhaps when the game goes on sale or perhaps as a rental.

I do think that there is some limitations in terms of what you can put on the previous generation, and keep in balance with the current generation, but if you own a PS4, I'd recommend this.

As much as i enjoyed Far Cry 3, i don't feel like i want to the same kind of stuff all over again (liberating outposts, climbing radio towers, killing animals to get their skins…) , but now in a unnecessarily bigger open world map filled with WAY more repetitive and laborious content, along boring characters (except the villain) and a uninteresting plot.

Far Cry 4 is a open world, shooter game. My son wanted to preorder this in Gamestop for 70€ and says its worth it. At first when watching campaign trailers it looks bloody. The game is beautiful and I'm an adult saying this. It contains violence but I think if my 13 year old is not scared by it it should fine. It's a great game and nothing to be too daunted about.

I wonder if the same reviewers pick up GTA 5 and say "I cannot believe that GTA 5 is soooo similar to previous GTAs! What were Rockstar thinking?!!" There's no way the next Assassins Creed game could be ANYTHING like the previous ones, right? And why is every Super Mario a brick blasting platformer? Can't they EVER be original? Sheesh!

Anyway, with that shot at hypocrite cloud shouters off my chest, I think that Far Cry 4 is a step up from the excellent FC3. The visual splendor is glorious. The improvements to crafting are welcome. The improvements to some enemy AI particularly around fortress domination is a welcome addition.

Far Cry 4 is more of the same. In this instance, that's not a bad thing at all. It's a highly entertaining enterprise that they have significantly improved since the disappointing FC2 looked to almost end the series. The downside are that the main storyline is a little ho hum, yet this is overshadowed by so much to do to entertain yourself that you may just want to leave as much of the main quests til last.

The truly free roam of the world is a sight to be hold. Scaling mountainsides only to bask in the crisp ranges and green valleys is very much worth it. If it looks this good on PS4 I can only imagine how insane it must look on a top end Ultra level PC.

The only main annoyance I have had with this game is the vicious nature of eagles. It's like they've become ravenous human hunters. I understand if I'm near your nest Mr. Eagle that you may become protective... but I was minding my own business on the valley floor and you had a beef with my existence? Sheesh!

If you like Far Cry games or shooters in general like Crysis, this is worth getting.

First of all, I think there has been way too much build up towards the release (especially towards the new bad guy; Pagan Min) and a lot of the expectations weren't exactly satisfied. For example, the mechanics (while great) are practically the same from Far Cry 3. I know you shouldn't fix something that's not broken, but still, no improvement there. The story is excessively short and the characters (especially Pagan Min) aren't memorable. Unlike Vaas who was completely crazy and went after you countless times, this guy doesn't really want to find you, let alone waste you, and therefore you spend most of the game hearing him talk over a phone (think Handsome Jack style from Borderlands 2, but less awesome)

Still, any fan of the Far Cry series will enjoy the game, mostly for the good ol' Far Cry mechanics, the beautiful open world and the fun, although short, missions.

You cans imply end the game with the basic setup of guns, as i went into halfway without changing, and after it didnt felt a difference at all. The Shangri-La missions maybe end weak, but are at least kind a original. Me myself didnt enjoy them, but i can see others finding those a solid element of the title.
As FC3 the taking of posts and towers is satysfying... but it felt so easy that i halfway through didnt enjoy it anymore. But once again i can see someone enjoying it..

To sum it up. I felt this game unispiring at all and aiming for easy money. Im giving it a 4/10.

Far Cry 4 is a good game that continues in the same spirit and style of its predecessor but is letdown by a few disappointing flaws. Far Cry 3 was one of the biggest surprises of the old gen as it delivered a fantastic and vast FPS experience against very competitive games within the genre but this outing struggles to deliver the same impact in quality and gameplay.

Firstly, the game looks absolutely fantastic. The visuals, draw distances and effects all look superb and mold the beautiful and thriving world of Kyrat on a grand scale. The island itself is massive but it often feels too cramped with narrow paths, tons of trees and elevated surfaces boxing you in on the ground - it's not as open as the island seen on Far Cry 3 and this may disappoint even die-hard fans. There is a greater focus on elevated gameplay here and scaling heights through climbing which can become a bit of a chore when reaching difficult areas. Despite the size of the map; everything feels more claustrophobic and the general layout of Kyrat and the map seems poorly put together.

In terms of the gameplay; this outing utilises the same infrastructure of Far Cry 3 which isn't a bad thing. The skills, crafting and general mechanics are all the same which is fantastic as the structure is familiar and works incredibly well. There are animals galore to hunt and avoid plus vehicles to move around easier once again. Guns are aplenty with full customisation options and there is plenty of loot to hunt.

Sadly, despite its familiar style and stunning backdrop; Far Cry 4 just lacks in a few key areas. The story is rather bland and boring, most of the characters are dreadful along with the acting plus the core gameplay just feels rather uninspiring. Everything on offer in this game may ooze Far Cry 3 but the overall execution is not quite up to par with that game and the above issues really hit home.

Overall, Far Cry 4 is a good game that follows in the footsteps of it's predecessor but fails to shine in some key aspects. Fans of the series will probably enjoy the experience but may be left a bit underwhelmed with some lackluster features.
