This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4 is the latest "Roleplaying" game from Bethesda, known for creating The Elder Scrolls, an actual roleplaying series. And buying the Fallout series just to downgrade it.

First of all, Fallout 3 and NV was amazing, I have over 200+ hours on those games. In Fallout 4 I had to force myself to play it for 60 hours. This game is so dull and boring, well let's just start the review.

    1. The Story
The story is so predictable and repetitive. It has the same concept that previous Fallout games did. Find someone or something. The only difference is that those stories wasn't full of clichés. So I'm gonna sum up the story right now:
    1. Exit a vault
    2. Find your son
    3. Find some s**t in order to find your son
    4. Get help from different factions
    5. Your son turns out to be the leader of the bad guys faction (Original, I know)

    2. The graphics and audio
The graphics and audio in Fallout 4 has to the worst of last year, seriously it looks like a 2011 game. Audio doesn't even match up with what you walk or run on. The only good audio is Dogmeat's.

    3. The characters
All the characters and companions in this game are either from previous game, or they have a backstory that you honestly don't care about.

    4. The game world
Since this is an open world game you expect hours worth of quests and locations, right? Well there are 70% less quests and locations than in previous Bethesda titles, like Skyrim or Fallout 3. You'll just end up going to the same location for the same repetitive quests give to you by faction leaders over and over and over.

    5. Almost no RPG elements
That's right, you read that right. Almost no RPG elements. They were either removed or watered down since the last game. Let's list them all because I have nothing better to do.

    1. The dialogue system: The dialogue system has suffered a huge downgrade since the previous games. Remember how you could select from a bunch of dialogue options and use your skills? Well in Fallout 4 it has been downgraded to 4 options.
    Yes
    No
    Sarcastic
    Bye
    2. The Karma system: The Karma system from FO3 and NV has been removed. So you can just go around stealing and kill everyone you see without being punished.
    3. Skills: Skills have been removed and have been replaced with perks. Each time you level up you can chose from different perks.

    6: The HUD
The HUD in Fallout 4 is so badly make, the green color makes you want to puke. And the power armor HUD will give you a headache. Sure you can change it by going to the options, but do you really want to spend time to chose which color you want the HUD to be?

    7. The game is way too easy.
Even on Hard difficulty the game is too easy. You get power armor in the first 20- 30 minutes of the game, plus a minigun. From there you can just buy new weapons and armor by using exploits. Stimpaks and Rad-Aways are also too easy to find. I remember in Fallout 3 and NV when I found almost no Stimpaks and Rad-Aways. I Fallout 4 you find them in almost every location.

    8. The Power Armor
Remember how in FO3 and NV you found no power armor untill you reach a high level or start a quest that requires you to be high level? Well, as I said before you now find it in the first 20-30 minutes of the game. Taking away that epic feeling of finally entering a set of power armor.

Well, I gues that's all. I really don't recommend this game if you own a PS3, PC or XBOX 360. Because you can just buy FO3 and NV on those systems. BUT! If you don't own those systems, then I guess you can buy this. Just be ready to be disappointed

Liked the game until the building crap started. If I wanted to build stuff (which I don't!) I would have bought Minecraft!! All the building DLC is crap as well!! I have no interest in building up settlements, taking care of whiny people, planting crops, etc. Bad move, Bethesda. Don't buy this game now and wait for the price to drop and buy it cheap. Cheap price for a cheap game. I'm not gonna repeat all that is said in the bad reviews, read them, it's all there. 1) Bethesda should fire all team. There is a clear lack of ambition and competence.

It is a bad RPG and a misdirected installment in the franchise. Still, many Bethesda fans or just players who enjoy exploring unfamiliar worlds will be satisfied with it, as it has one of the richest, most detailed game worlds ever created. Lore is presented to the player in different ways around every corner of the game world. Together with the masterfully crafted sound design it will help immerse even newcomers in the interesting world of Fallout. The game also has a lot to offer to gun nuts as the game features improved shooting and an expansive crafting system that takes resources from the clutter in the open world.

However, Fallout 4 is a big departure from the franchise in terms of its way of storytelling and RPG mechanics, which will most likely disappoint long-time fans of the franchise. It is apparent that BGS have taken inspiration from other popular games. It seems to me that in the beginning of the development cycle of the game, the developers asked the question “can we” too many times and didn’t ask the question “should we” enough. As a result the narrative of the game suffers, as the actions of the player often contradict with or completely undermine the meaning of the main story of the game.

For the first time in a Bethesda game, the protagonist is given strictly defining traits that force them to follow a linear path towards an endgame goal. This not only limits the possibilities for role playing, but it creates a pseudo narrative dissonance between the actions that the player makes during the main quests and the rest of their journey in the open world. On one hand the game tries to be an emotional story about family and difficult choices. On the other, it tries to tell a story about hope, building a new healthy community in the post-apocalyptic world. Unfortunately it does not spend enough time on any of these two sides and fails to tell a coherent story as a result of their inability to exist in correlation.

This new way of storytelling is totally uncalled for and it betrays the philosophy of player freedom that BGS has always had. Fallout 4 is a lesser RPG in almost every aspect, even compared to Fallout 3: The removal of the karma system (and the ability to role play as an evil persona); The new “dialogue wheel” which only gives the illusion of choice but ultimately lacks any consequences; The voiced protagonist with defined traits and goals; The removal of skills making your character inexplicably proficient in any kind of weapon and power armor from the very start of the game; The overall lack of choice in quests or the illusion of such. All of these aspects were hallmarks of the franchise and, in my opinion, made the previous Fallout games one of the best RPG games of all time.

Moreover, the quest scripts themselves are repetitive, uninspired and boring. In terms of their mechanics, the quests of Fallout 4 could very well exist in an MMORPG, just in bigger numbers. All quest objectives can be narrowed down to: Acquire X item, place X item, kill X NPC, talk to X NPC, escort X NPC. Inexplicably, 95% of the population of the Commonwealth consists of generic, respawning enemies to kill in an attempt by Bethesda to bring the franchise to the mainstream audience of action hungry FPS players.

The lack of innovation in the mechanics of the game might very well be due to engine limitations. Unsurprisingly, Bethesda decided to use an upgraded version of the engine that they used for Skyrim. This is not the first time that the Fallout franchise receives this kind of treatment as Fallout 3 used an upgraded version of Oblivion's engine. It might have made sense at the time, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first try at the IP and there was a certain amount of risk involved but it cannot be justified after the huge success of both Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

There has been an argument that the team behind these games is considerably small and they like to keep it this way because they are used to working with each other. This is possibly the biggest lie that Bethesda’s PR team has come up with and anyone with even a little knowledge about the game industry can pick it apart. I am totally fine with BGS keeping their artists and world designers and writers as they are. However, the choice by Bethesda not to hire more software engineers and graphics designers is a purely business decision since those types of employees rarely have any influence on the overall theme of the game. It is unforgivable for a AAA title in 2015 to have so many bugs, to look considerably worse than other games that came out in the same year while running poorly. This is not the quality that we should expect from the company behind some of the best selling games of the decade. As long as the community shows that they are willing to forgive poor mechanics, ugly, not optimized textures and game breaking bugs, BGS will keep releasing games in an unfinished state.

Firstly I should say I have played Fallout 1 and 2 albeit recently and wasn't particularly fussed. Fallout 3 is what drew me into the franchise and I must be one of the few people who rates New Vegas as it's poorer cousin. There, now I've alienated almost everyone I'll proceed with the review.

Pros: The map is big and full of items locations etc as with Fallout 3. Power armour is really cool. Skills and levelling are the best in any Bethesda game in my view. All creatures are made from scratch with some cool animations. Weapon mods are fun and varied. Settlements can be fun with some caveats.

Cons: If you power armour helmet gets smashed you can't see in the dark except by your pip boy light meaning getting out or your power armour and leaving your suit wherever you are (sometimes the middle of nowhere) just to **** see. Stupid companions both bore you moralising for PICKING STUFF UP (yes more than half of the fun of the game is pissed upon by the **** people who are supposed to be helping). Paladin Danse in particular needs to stop blocking my way before I blow his stupid fat power armour head apart.

Not a lot of missions. Really. Radiant missions are the missions so plough through the main quest because getting the game out at xmas meant a huge plot sacrifice. I expect they thought DLC could fix this. No give us some **** missions at the outset please.

Settlements build cap is way way too low even in Sanctuary. Less settlements with a higher build cap for each would have been so much better. (This is fixed with mods in PC).

Without spoiling too much I don't give a flying **** about Shaun. This plots feels more forced on you than Fallout 3 for reasons I can't explain. Perhaps because I can't identify with a whiny child.

Speech is one of the biggest drawbacks. Your choices are limited your ability to be funny, evil, stupid, intelligent etc. has taken a big knock. This is a shame. What you get from voice acting would be better spend on fixing this aspect (which by the way wasn't broken in F3 so why they fixed it is anyone's guess).

Graphics are ok but not really amazing. Glitches which I always expected to be there are pretty common and sometimes hilarious. I'm not that bothered but there is nothing here to blow you away.

Conclusion: This has the beginning of a good game in some ways. DLC may fix some of the main gripes however if you were expecting the bomb this is more or an extended F3 which some improvements and some retrograde steps. The plot is never gonna get better so hopefully DLC will provide something there. I really hope so. With the Witcher 3 out and a competitive market the the basic game only gave me a few months play before I tired of it. Players new to the franchise might be more entertained by it. I bought the season pass for DLC because I'm a dreamer who doesn't want to give up on Bethesda. My worry is I will get bored before I really get stuck into it. Anyway there certainly something to be said for this title but it isn't quite good enough especially as the product of 7 years in the making. It really doesn't feel next gen but they had a go and the results are mixed.

The fourth entry into the fallout series is a bit of mess. Its do its glitchy gameplay; which isn't game breaking, but are annoying like when special characters you need to talk to will spawn on a roof. Ok but

Sometimes bad follower AI; that gets stuck in doorways(which is so frustrating),walls/objects in the

environment and will just wander aimlessly and will just randomly go through traps. The settlement system is kind of a mess because the hud for feels disorganized. I'd sometimes go back to find something but get lost trying to look for it. It also has a lack of a tutorial to where I didnt know I could do certain important things; like sending out a settler on a caravan rout to trade with another settlement. I mostly agree with what they did with the leveling system, but one thing I disagree with is getting rid of the level cap. The level cap is what really makes you think about what kind of character you want in your first playthrough. Its supposed to limit you so where you cant become a god character in one playthrough and increase game replayability. This is a role playing game; not a a fps. The pip boy menu disorganized just looking through all your weapons, armor and junk can be frustrating. Probably the most disappointing part of the game is the dialogue system and voiced protagonist. Why Bethesda why????? Why in the world would you ever sacrifice choice which you were known for just some emotion. THIS IS A ROLE PLAYING GAME!!!!!!!!! Its not just that their is only four options, and just TWO OPTIONS DESCRIBING WHAT YOUR GOING TO SAY, BUT YOUR CHOICES ONLY MATTER ALMOST 0% IN BOTH THE MAIN QUEST AND SIDE MISSIONS!!!!!!!!!!! With the vice protagonist I think the vice acting is pretty good. My problem with it is that the voice just doesn't match any other race well than the white man or woman. Thats one big reanson why haveing the voiced protagonist was a mistake. In skyrim their was 100 plus side quest; in fallout 4 there is around 35. I think its because they focused so much on the voice acting for the protagonist that they didnt have time to do tuns of side quest like in skyrim. That's another reason a voiced protagonist is a huge mistake. Dont forget the weird facial animations, mostly poor character models, and long loading times. The main quest is leaps and bounds betters than skyrims with interesting and well written characters and mostly well placed and interesting plot. But the ending cutsene doesn't even adress the ending of the game no matter what factions you chose. Dont forget that the choices in dialogue in the main story dont matter; but fallout 4 still had more choice than skyrim. Even after all those problems fallout 4 is saved by its crazy and addicting customization for weapons and settlement building. Its interesting dense world to explore. Excellent environmental story telling. Fun improved slowmotion vats and real time gun play. Fun and interesting characters.

To top that off, considering the game is not that graphically intensive and locked at 30FPS on the PS4 it's amazing that it has so many performance issues. Framerate dips below 30FPS regularly, load times are abysmal and the game likes to crash now and then.

There's virtually little wrong with the gameplay and story, but the poor optimization makes Fallout 4 possibly the last non-id software Bethesda title I'll trust to throw money at.

Theres also a real problem with exploration...theres way too many boarded up houses that cant be accessed at all, dungeons that are one room, and Bethesda really missed an oppurtunity to add a Capitol Wasteland DLC. (in fact the DLC for Fallout 4 is lazy and short, now we know why the season pass was so cheap at launch)

Such a huge let down given how good 3 and NV were, we waited years for this and it just doesn't measure up to the high bar set by past Fallout games.

So basically I knew this was just going to be another Bethesda game of trecking across the map to kill one thing and then coming back and getting the reward and then just grinding everything out with no purpose. I had this trouble with Skyrim as well where I found that there was far too much to do to the point where the side quests are well over 10 times the size of the main quest and they just spiral out into this endless void. But it's not worth it at all. All the characters are boring and they all sound depressed or just poorly voiced so I just don't care about them at all. Every quest is just so much effort and there's no final boss or thing to work towards. I personally prefer a game I can beat in about 40 hours and be satisfied with. This game cannot be beaten and so I just cannot be arsed to play it for 60 hours and try and immerse myself in a boring world. Expand

I'm a big fan of the Fallout Saga and this title has a scarcity of Fallout features such as:
    - a deep conversation system which has been simplified to the maximum... Oh if you didn't notice a console controller has FOUR BUTTONS then... why don't we put ONLY FOUR DIFFERENT ANSWERS ? That must have been the **** they were thinking when creating that conver system. And by chance those answers are divided in : evil, good, neutral and funny. We have lost a lot of depth in the development of story because of that.

    - The game play has been improved... but now this video game looks like a Call of Duty, losing the strategy element , being possible to fade the enemies only with our fire power. You can argue this by saying that the main character is an ex soldier so he's skilled with weapons, and that leads to the next point...

    - An ARPG must make feel the player to be part of the story by giving the player a huge fan of possibilities to personalize the experience. But in this game we are forced to play with a character that has an own story ( SPOILER: he's an ex soldier of the US army ) which eliminates a lot of role from our experience, not as the other video games in which you were someone building your story step by step, discovering who you were.

    - The character has voice which personally I think it's horrible since this is supposed to be an ARPG .

    - SO MANY BUGS: disappearing characters, if it's in the night and you are inside a building everything is illuminated which makes no sense, and so on.

    - TOO EASY : in Fallout video games the pinacle of experience was getting a power armor which was the moment you could feel the power flowing your veins , but in this game you are getting the power armor in the FIRST MISSION which makes the video game less enjoyable since you are the **** boss since the first moment. The fusion batteries are no excuse because there are loads of them and you never need to get out of the armor.
Almost the same thing happens with the Fatman.

    - ANIMATIONS : it looks like you are talking to robots , and this isn't anything new in the saga, but ffs this is a 2015 video game, they could have worked on that a bit. It's funny when you are talking to a character and it turns its back on you.

CONCLUSION: If you are not a Fallout fan and want a light entrance to ARPG genre this is a good option, but if you are a Fallout fan , you can't approve this because it could lead to the deterioration of the saga.

As a warning I have yet to complete the games main storyline, but when you have spent at least 50 hours JUST exploring the world, it speaks volumes about the quality provided.
I'll start on the Pro's in the order I witnessed them:
-Physical Character Creation is fantastic. My only qualm is it needed more presets...

-Voice Acting is incredible. Nolan North did his job fantastically, as did Courtney Taylor, that being said the latter's voice can wear you down after a while. Way too... excitable? Obviously this is subjective.

-Intro destroys Fallout 3s, but leads to major pace problems later. New Vegas ambiguity arguably better as a result, but I personally enjoyed it more than F:NVs more coherent intro.

-Lighting... Gorgeous. Colour Palette is also much improved, but would like to have seen a little more.

-New gameplay is, regardless of what other people are saying, perfectly fine for fallout. VATS is vastly improved, and new Critical system is fantastic.

-Power Armour is well done. Gives you a sense of being a super soldier.

-Radiation storms and feral ghouls. The storms cloud your screen in green, and the ghouls evoke a rabid zombie, and can catch you by surprise.

-Worldly storytelling (non-quest) is fantastic. With tales of twins birthdays going astray, to trailer park last stands, they are my favourite element so far.

    The mediocres:
-New radiation system is great. However, it does not truly push you into survival mode. Would have been nice to see it progressively cause more injuries as it increases. It does not help that Radaway takes away a high 300 rads, and doctors only charge ~15ish caps to clear. Too easy to tackle.

-Quests are good, HOWEVER, they tie to almost nothing most of the time. More so they lack multiple paths to achieving them, which is disappointing by todays standard.
Quests really need to impact the world around you. Witcher 3 did this very well, with a handful of quests impacting an entire landscape in noticeable ways. Bethesda have been a leading RPG developer for too long to not be developing quests with the world in mind.

-New crafting system is great but really needs to do more. Now you dont actually craft in this game, you only mod. This makes sense, however, one crafting element that is missed is the crafting of munitions. It really feels like a step backward.
The loss of durability on weapons are also missed, and although many approve of this, I personally think it creates a world where looting junk becomes more important than looting weapons. It also detracts from a sense of surviving in the wastes.

-Settlements. This is neither pro nor con. If you have patience the system is good enough, but thats it. It handles poorly, your settlements are restricted visually to places built from junk (which they are, but its flipping ugly), its hard to figure out if a settler has a job already, and the lack of ledgers to help you manage your settlements hurts it big time. Not to mention you are capped to about 20 settlers which is rubbish. I also feel like they missed a nifty trick by not giving your settlers names, and unworkable families who come along for the ride.

-Raiders and super mutants are largely unchanged mechanically. Suiciders and Power-Armour weilding raiders are nice additions, however, they are still essentially one unified gang. Was hoping for unique gangs battling for territory, impacting their surrounding areas in unique ways.

    The poor:
-SPECIAL is no longer special. In an attempt to create an all perk system your SPECIAL stats feel like perks. SPECIAL should have more weight to it, really distinguishing one character build from another, and you should not be able to raise your SPECIAL every level.

-Perk system is not bad, however, the perks are boring. Perks should unlock abilities rather than providing incremental boosts and taking over SPECIALs job. E.g. Gunslinger should not increase pistol damage, but give you a disarm option in VATS or something along those lines.

-Lack of sizeable cities. Diamond City is AMAZING, however, seeing what Bethesda did in Skyrim makes you wish for more. This is meant to be the most lived in Wasteland.

-Game forces you to build settlements. Although you can ignore, the view of 20% happiness on the map drags you in.

-Where is hardcore mode? This leads back to the points above, the game never truly incites a sense of anguish or need to survive. At least not for yourself, the world tells a completely different story.

Verdict: 8/10. Bethesda may have lost their RPG crown in 2015.

But it gets boring quickly. You talk to people and they tell you to go to such location and get a certain item or clear a number of enemies. This is basically the whole game. Even during end-game quests, you go to a location and kill all the bad guys. The game occasionally gives you the option of peaceful resolution but mostly you are forced to kill every moving thing. This gets really boring and really brakes immersion.

The game has instances of severe framerate drops on the ps4.

I had fun playing the game but overall I felt that it reused the old formula and abused it. I would have given it a 6 were it not for the framerate issues.

I won't go on a big rant about one thing or another, I'll just sum it all up:

Fallout 4 is a great game, that much is certain. But it is not a Fallout game. It isn't an RPG, it has taken several steps back in that department. It is a story-driven shooter and yes there is a difference. If you go into this game expecting to play a Fallout RPG, you will be disappointed, like many and most

Amazing game, terrible addition to the Fallout franchise. If only there was a way to write a review without giving it a rating.

I understand why this game is getting mixed reviews, but I think that it's mostly due to the one negative factor that is graphics (also bugs). Apart from that bethesda has done a good job of addressing most of the issues that could be improved with respect to fallout 3 and NV.

Pros (the ones that spring to mind right now)

    - Better VATS: now you can't simply stop time, you can only slow it down. I think this is more balanced.

    - Better levelling: the system is built so you cannot max out individual skills immediately, and all perks can be upgraded. I personally prefer it this way. The downside is that certain locations remain unavailable until your character is able to unlock certain high level perks, such as lockpicking or hacking.

    - Improved looting. This is so important I cannot stress it enough. It's now now much, much quicker than before

    - Followers: your relationship with them can be built to the point that eventually they will give you a special perk and there are specific missions you can do with them if they trust you enough.

    - Weapons don't degrade and they can be fully modified. Same goes for armor.

    - Power armor is now a completely new and very cool game experience.

    - Shooting without VATS now feels much more realistic and satisfying, the fps experience is enhanced. Using melee weapons too

    - Settlements: you can create and run them. It's fun and gives a sense of really making a change in the commonwealth

    - Dogmeat doesn't die within 2 minutes of meeting him

    Cons

    - Graphics are below the level expected from current gen games

    - Lots of bugs, I won't list them. The game crashed 3 times and froze twice on me so far. Hopefully future patches will improve this

    - No karma. I see no valid reason for removing the karma system, although followers will react to your moral choices

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well where to start if you played any of the previous Fallout games than you should feel right at home. Right of the bat you can tell the graphic have improved much over the previous two games Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. In the beginning you get a choice of male of female with a very impressive character creator I think you can make almost anybody if you put your mind to it. Than after that you get a brief game play section of pre-war life before the bombs drop and rushed off the vault 111 and get cryogenically frozen than you wake up 200 years later, make your way out of the vault. Then from that point onward you can do whatever want with a pretty vast open world with many things to explore and quests to complete. Gun play has improved to the points that making VATS not a necessity anymore, crafting power armor, weapons, and regular armor can be in depth and settlement building can be a huge time sinker in a good way. However the glitches are back and after putting 60 hours in already I can narrow it down 90% funny glitches and bugs that don't break the game and are funny to see and 10% game breaking glitches and bugs this is why it's encouraging to save often with multiple files. In the end you'll definitely gets your money's worth whether your a veteran of the series or not. This is the most welcoming and best designed game of the series so far. Expand

It's not a terrible game, but if this is where they're going... Fallout is dead, it pains me to say. Hell, if you usually play the "Hypocrite hero/anti-hero that kills almost everything", a Shepherd-type, you might not even have noticed that THAT is the only guy you can be in this game, with the only choice being nice or a dick in conversations leading down the same paths. There are plenty of factions, set pieces, areas - and you're either going to kill them or kill for them. The story makes no sense because of this - because there's no diplomacy, no role to play other than Actionman McShooty. Just a hitman for one of the factions, which is a fine choice, but it shouldn't be the ONLY choice, and that's actually what's kind of weird - aren't these the harder choices to implement, adding Diplomacy or Truly Evil options would actually be just a few more lines of dialogue, locking them by stats to require actual role-play, interface some of it with the way you do other quests... but no, by the end of the main story, you'd realize the game resists your urge to make choices by simply making you shoot at all your problems. You can't choose technology without murdering freedom, you can't choose morality without blasting technology (and, ironically, murdering some people along the way).

There's no coherence here, no factions to like, no people to want and help and that's a damn shame because those things are what makes the Fallout world tick.

Quality of writing in Bethesda has been dwindling for a while, I guess. The process of streamlining and homogenizing everything has become more extreme with every gaming generation. This game is and has sold like crazy - so maybe this is Fallout now, and us RPGers should bow out. That sucks.

So what it is is a decent game which controls better than most action RPGs, without any real RPG elements or choices that matter. It's a got a pretty meaningless but fun Sims - Mad Max Edition town builder to help protect your crappy companions and crappy mook AI settlers, but this leads nowhere. It goes down with a whimper no matter which of the millions upon billions of EXACTLY three ways it can end, and the road you take there is always soaked with the blood of your enemies, you shady but ultimately good anti-hero type who is sometimes sarcastic, you.

If you play fallout for the story and RPG elements, this game isn't for you. The dialogue is dumbed down (less dialogue options, and are often ambiguous) and the story isn't so good. No feeling whatsoever for any of the characters. Not as much complexity in story-telling. Often times it doesn't matter what decision you make; the ending is still the same.

Not a huge step up in graphics

Not a huge step up in graphics either.

Aside from that, nearly everything else has been stepped up from Fallout 3 and NV, and there are some cool new features like settlement building, weapon modding, etc. So overall, you're buying a game that feels less RPG (poor dialogue, not as complex), not as good a story, but improves on nearly everything else from Fallout 3/NV in terms of gameplay. Whether you're casual or not, worth buying, but wait till it goes on sale.

Gave it 9/10 cause i'm more on the casual side. If I was RPG side, 6/10.

I had to write a review after seeing all these whiny ass pissbabies complaining about graphics and other trivial **** - Battlefront came out yesterday, and I got bored with it after 2 hours. So now it's going to sit on a shelf for a year until they put out some DLC.

With Fallout, I've been playing every day since it came out for 2-6 hours a day, and I've barely scratched the surface.

With Fallout, I've been playing every day since it came out for 2-6 hours a day, and I've barely scratched the surface. I've only done 5~ main missions.

And I don't even care. There's so much to do and explore, I have to FORCE myself to stop playing every night and go to bed.

The graphics are NOT ground breaking.. That's not the point. In all honesty, the character models aren't that great. they're an improvement over NV, but not next gen. The environmental graphic ARE great though, especially with the real time shaders, they make new vegas look like a joke.

As far as the speech mechanics - Yes, there's only 4 choices now. I can see 2 reasons for this: A. Full voice acting means they couldn't possibly voice all 100k choices in a game like this, or B. It's streamlined, and you actually have longer conversations now that will make you choose between the 4, 3-4 times per conversation. That's around 16-20 choices per conversation. It doesn't feel wrong to me. Also being able to mumble 'shut up' while skipping dialog is fantastic for those of us who would rather be exploring.

Now, bugs - I've played for just over 50 hours now and I've encountered 3-4 bothersome bugs (trying to skip speech causes dead air sometimes, going too fast through the intro causes nothing to happen at a certain point, in general being impatient is bad), but nothing permanent. I love all these people saying it's unplayable because of bugs. They want it to fail. But the reality is, they're few and far between but they WILL be there, there will always be bugs in every game ever. Bethesda is good about getting out bug fixes. Also - graphical glitches are NOT game breaking bugs, get the f*** over yourself.

There are framerate drops less than 1% of the time, and it's usually when loading a new area with a ton of clutter, or for a split second while in scope. again, get over it. It's barely there.

Skills have been taken out of the game, and good riddance. They felt annoying or useless. 100 in energy weapons felt the same as 50. They were more of a level hindrance than anything.

I can't see myself playing anything else for a long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first game that has prompted me to create a meta critic account to provide a review for other users. The game is a serious disappointment given the time Bethesda have had to develop it. Many of the RPG elements that made the Fallout series great have been discarded or even further dumbed down and the game plays like an open world shooter. Unfortunately, it's not a very good shooter either.

    Positives
Gear customisation and crafting. Pretty cool feature and led to some fun self-made scavenger hunts.
Settlement building. Great potential but poorly executed (see negatives). Adds a world building element that makes sense in a post-apocalyptic setting.
Companions. Diverse range of engaging companions.
Environment - Post-nuclear Boston is an engaging sandbox to explore.

    Negatives
Character building - a pretty basic RPG staple and an aspect of previous Fallout games I loved.
In Fallout 4, no investment in character building is required. There is no skill system with level upgrades now spent on attribute upgrades and a limited range of perks. There is also no level cap. Basically this means that your character is now infinitely upgradable to a heroic every-man. Linking the perks to SPECIAL attributes is an interesting idea but rendered redundant by the lack of level cap. Overall, will ultimately hurt replayability of the game.

Graphics. Graphics look like Fallout 3 remastered and anyone expecting next-gen graphics in the game will be highly disappointed. On its own not a major drawback but if you're going to gut the RPG aspects of the game and turn out a glorified shooter, then, sorry, graphics matter.

Insipid storytelling. Main quest is ripped off from Fallout 3 and while there are numerous side quest and factional quest threads, these consist mainly of travel to location, kill enemies / retrieve item, return to base. Seriously could care less choosing between Faction A/B/C/D as there is little consequence to player decisions for most of the game.
Settlement building. Once the initial novelty of playing with the crafting system is done with, there is little motivation to actually want to continue. The UI is clunky and constructs mesh poorly with the surrounding environment. There is little to no interaction possible with settlers apart from demanding resources or thanking you for killing enemies.
NPC interaction - There's supposedly over a 100,000 lines of dialog in the game, but have yet to come across any that is particularly interesting or engaging yet. For the most part human NPC's are hollow, emotionless, 2-D cardboard cutouts and provide the same level of interaction and motivation as talking to robots. This may be also partly due to the terrible character animation.
Companion AI - worse than enemy AI which hasn't improved at all from FO3. Was a minor annoyance initially, but after 40+hrs in, its just tedious.
Challenge - The only challenge to be found in the game is fighting and killing things. There's no engaging scavenger hunts, puzzles, quests that demand non-violent resolution. Providing power armor with a scripted death claw killing at the start of the game was a serious misstep. It also takes away a lot of the sense of vulnerability prevalent in the early stages of other Fallout games. The game took on a familiar "dungeon grind" vibe fairly quickly.

Overall, the game is not terrible but very very average. Cannot understand at all the generally positive consensus review from so-called professional critics.
Save your money until this one is in the cheap bins.

You're a vault dweller and you're gonna get that X-01 power armor. The world is huge, and is a playground for exploration. And despite the slightly disappointing main plot, there are side quests that are awesome and interesting like the The Last Voyage of The U.S.S. Constitution, and interesting characters like Captain Ironsides. The shooting mechanics feel greatly improved from the previous games, so I don't spam VATS constantly. The crafting system provides so many different, unique weapons you'll never stop searching through piles of trash for economy wonderglue. The settlement builder shines in this title. Building my own 'pad' was probably the most enjoyable thing I've done in the game, and making Sanctuary a junk fortress made me feel like I could rival Megaton. My biggest complaint is the weak storyline. The main story is pretty non-compelling, and I didn't start the main quest line until I was level 21, and found it to be less than spectacular. The companion AI is very broken, but this doesn't knock down the score because it can be avoided by just travelling without your brain-dead dog at your side. Overall, Fallout 4 engrosses you in the little things, the side stories, the details, and is fairly ok in the big quests and stories. Thank you Captain Ironsides, you'll make it to open sea one day. +First off, i simply love the graphics. I know many have commented that it looks last gen, and they are entitled to think that. However, the atmosphere this game provides is beautiful. The shading in the game is fantastic and all of the lighting is gorgeous.
+Secondly, the music and sound is wonderful and adds to that atmosphere perfectly in my opinion however it can be too dramatic at times.
+The story is enough to make me want to explore. Not amazing but good for a massive open world game, and this game is pretty massive.
+Weapons, armor, and customization are very good
+Building is rewarding even though it offers little to the game
    +Good voice acting
+Nick Valentine is an awesome character

-Dialogue choices are pretty boring and end up making little differences.
-lip syncing can be way off at times
-game suffers from a number of glitches typical from bethesda (havent encountered any serious ones but they are still annoying and shouldnt be allowed in a 60 dollar title)

Last thing i have to say is that I wish i had the game on PC so that i could download all of the glorious mods for it. BUY IT ON PC! And dont buy an XBONE theyre lame and dumb and stupid. Also, this is a game that is pretty rewarding and has not left me regretting the amount of time i put in. I think its definitely worth the pick up.

It didn't live up to its hype because that is the nature of hype/overhype, but what often people miss/forget in their reviews is that Bethesda didn't cause the overhyping of the game. The fans did. I mean, Bethesda stayed silent for the whole fan-made survivor2288 or whatever that was. WE created the hype. Sorry if it is not as you've heard, so my advise is to forget all of what you've heard before the game is released, and play the game yourself, because I'd recommend.

As for the game, I will agree with some reviews here that Bethesda could've spent more time on Fallout 4. Fallout 4 still suffers in having a mediocre main storyline; however, it makes up in side quests and little story bits you find in notes or terminals and holotapes. Although, the amount of side quests doesn't live up to Skyrim. This can be attributed to Fallout 4 and Skyrim having very different styles, i.e. Skyrim is an epic fantasy setting and so you expect the hero to be given quests left and right, while Fallout 4 is set in post-apocalyptia Wasteland.
In saying this, this is where Bethesda's attention to details come to play. Skyrim guides you through the world through quests. You are the story. Fallout 4, however, lets you roam in an exciting, detailed, and open world where the little details tell you the many stories of Pre-War and Post-War Boston. It reminds us that there used to be people in these places, and still have people in some.

Settlements- This is a great system which lets you participate in the world you are living in. While most games remain static, Fallout 4 lets you rebuild the world, because it makes sense for you to do so. The system is a bit clunky in that some of its features feels a bit restrictive, and the options are quite lacking. However, I think this is probably because of problems with the technology and they had to trade some features out in order to fix problems. It's a great system and actually is worth it over time, however, the radiant quests are quite annoying, which puts off people.

Crafting- Fallout 4 has an in depth crafting system with lots of choices for weapon and armor mods. It also lets you scrap your "useless" items to make things which are more useful to you, just like a true scavver would. There are actually some recipes scattered in the world which you can use to craft unique food items and mods. My only complaint with the new weapon system is that the Legendary "effects" are basically enchants, which breaks my immersion, and they could probably have re-used the variation in ammos in FNV to cover some of these effects.

Dialogue- I don't have a problem with it since I got used to ME. However, they probably should have added more variation to the dialogue options (there's always just 4 options all the time unlike how you can have "more dialogue options" in one of the wheel direction in ME)

Storyline- While I did say it's mediocre, the story is actually interesting for people like who ponders on philosophy or politics. I think the problem is that it is a bit high-brow for some of the demographic. There's a lot of philosophical questions you have to face playing through the main questline, and that for me, is a reward in itself. However, you don't really see a lot of this change in the game, and the ending cutscenes leaves much to be desired.

Combat- Definitely better than in Fallout 3 and NV. This is true for whether you prefer VATS or aiming down yourself. Now people complain about having Power Armor at the start of the game, but they neglect to add how you need to maintain that armor, and you'd have to supply it with fuel to use it optimally. And you're gonna need it! You're not the only who has access to Power Armor. Raiders have em. Mercenaries have em. And against some enemies, e.g. robots, Deathclaws, a boss Mirelurk, you'll definitely need it.

You can claim that I'm just a Bethesda fanboy, and that may be true. While I'd recommend this game if you love Fallout 3 and NV, I'll happily admit that Fallout 4 isn't GOTY material. I do think it's more that The Witcher has had more time to develop than Fallout 4 but I digress.

The gunplay is a lot of fun, and there's a huge incentive to loot and explore. I'm finding it honest to god more addictive than former installments in the series.

To be blunt, though, I'm finding the existing reviews a bit sad. A huge amount of the negative reviews were left the day the game came out. I understand not liking the game, and I don't think you absolutely have to play it for 100000 hours to have a valid opinion, but jeez, I'm pretty sure a lot of these people just left bad reviews to leave bad reviews.

I've always been a fan of Bethesda games, especially Fallout 3. But every time a game of theirs comes out, I had always encountered really bad problems with them, such as a lack of free roam warning for Fallout 3's ending (seriously???) and those backward flying dragons in Skyrim (that was downright embarrassing). I've heard some pretty legitimate complaints about Fallout 4 from pretty much most sources. I can only speak for myself however, when I will state that in my 60+ hours of playing this game, I have yet to find a single game-breaking glitch.

Let's talk about the reasons why people hate this game...but wait, I believe it can all be summed up into one fat ugly word: hypocrisy. They hate it because it's too familiar to its predecessors. But they also hate it because it's not enough change to the franchise. So which one is it? What were you honestly expecting or hoping for when you made your purchase?

Changes made include: more streamlined, linear level up progression trees, weapons that actually shoot where you aim (which I must admit makes VATS kind of pointless), dialogue system similar to that of Mass Effect (only not as good), weapons that don't break, a new "settlements" mode that I spent countless hours having fun with, being able to craft weapon and armor mods, chemicals/medicine and food (similar to Skyrim), a branching story, radiation damaging your max health, being able to play arcade clones on your pip boy or computer, and the power armor.

I think MOST of those changes are NECESSARY for the series to evolve in the right direction. Notice how I say most, not all.

Things that weren't changed were: muddy graphics (they are still better than 3 though), character models look the same, most enemies look EXACTLY the same, the pip boy works the same way, the map (which is disappointingly small IMO).

I've read complaints about people criticizing the game for "not feeling like Fallout" and you know what: I like that. It only means Bethesda is trying to do new things for the series so that it doesn't become stale. Regardless of whether you think they have succeeded or failed, is your opinion. I just appreciate the different feel to it. It can feel more like a shooter than an RPG though, due to the gunplay and linear RPG elements. I believe the Mass Effect sequels suffered the same fate though. I actually think it kind of feels like Borderlands. No complaints, I LOVE Borderlands.

I just think the reason why this is getting a lot of hate is because of the hype. Kill all hype in gaming and you will start to appreciate what games have to offer in content. Unless that game is in fact a complete pile of crap. This is not a perfect game, and the appeal may wear off for me in a couple weeks but it is by no means garbage. You want to know what garbage feels like? Play Bound by Flame or Assassin's Creed Unity. New Vegas was actually closer to broken garbage at launch than this game currently is. Perhaps you should stop playing Fallout if your standards are that high then.

On one hand, you've got a Fallout with much better and responsive shooting, similar to Destiny (on which it modeled itself after). On the other, you've got the same Fallout experience you've seen prior. The bugs and crashes are far less than before, if ever occurring. The ability to now run is appreciated. However, like most people are saying, this is a great game, but a **** Fallout game.

When we look at Fallout as a franchise, we expect just a few small things we deem as essential to the experience: Ambience and atmosphere, narrative and storyline, weapon degradation, and most importantly--DIALOG, WRITING, AND CHOICES THAT MATTER.

Fallout 4 has none of these things, virtually making this iteration so far removed from Fallout you can't really call it Fallout. Guns don't break down, so I can just grab a Super Sledge and never worry about another weapon again, ever, effectively removing immersion and potential strategies for combat prep. You don't have to worry, it'll never break. Boston simply sucks, feels small, confined, and empty. There's zero lore outside of the story missions, and the story was not very good overall. I think BGS tried to go more dense and vertical, and I'm sorry, but they failed miserably in this experiment. Fallout is the one game that NEEDS empty expanse to effectively communicate the fear and isolation embedded in the franchise. It's literally the only franchise that can get away with it. Imagine if F4 had Just Cause 3's (which is awesome fun) map and density. But the most unforgivable sin of this game is the writing and dialog options. Simply awful. Since this game came out over 5 years after New Vegas, it is simply no excuse to not tirelessly labor to get the writing and dialog and choice making crystallized. The game is pure illusion of choice: you either agree happily, or you agree sarcastically. There is no option to be the bad guy. NO KARMA SYSTEM. Hyper-reduced dialog choices. Your decisions don't matter, they never did. Additionally, the graphics are quite bad for a game that took over 7 years to produce. Unacceptable and upstart devs like CD PROJEKT are lapping them. Cyberpunk 2077 may be the Fallout franchise killer.

In sum, you'll have a good time playing this game. But you won't be enjoying the bastard casualization of this beloved franchise. Better shooting, less lore, less reality, bad graphics, horrible writing, abysmal dialog, ugh I cant write anymore.

Bethesda, watch your ass, your competition will and is already lapping you. Do yourself a favor and give Fallout to OBSIDIAN, a developer that understands Fallout much more than you do in all ways. They are the ones that gave you better custom mods, a world with actual consequences for your actions and choices that truly matter, weapon degrading, stellar voice acting and radio stations, and a sense of atmosphere and ambiance that makes you truly feel the world is dead and you are a wandering loner lost in the dust of the old west.

I.e. when choosing an option titled "you're a synth", your character will be aggressive and it will be said in the form of an accusation. If I knew that I wouldn't picked it! With menu that uses only codewords instead of full lines I felt that instead of leading the conversation I was playing guesswork. Good thing that "quick save" option works in dialogs, I was using quick-load when inside the dialog quite often. I miss the times of Baldur's Gate. In that game, you had to earn your way into a romance. It wasn't started by choosing the "romance" option... It's like: "new directive: commence romance. initializing... protocol romance starts". Yuck.

    2) Repetition. In Fallout 4 there are really LOTS of places to visit. And they're nicely done. But what's the point if most of them are empty in content? I mean sure, there are raiders to kill and loot to be found. But if you "clear" the location and take the loot, it's marked as "cleared" and that's it. There's no "history" inside them, no spontaneous quests, and I really can't find any reason to enter some Brewery if I don't have a quest marker inside it. Also, automatically generated quests (like, 'clear this area' or 'rescue this person') are giving me exactly ZERO motivation to follow this quest, because I know that when I'll do it, i'll get EXACTLY the same quest next time, sometimes even in the SAME location! There won't be any feeling of accomplishment, nothing. Only loot. I don't care about the loot! I care about the story and the world, not numbers and which compound I have the most!

    3) Weapons. I play melee character. In early game I've bought Chinese Officer's Sword, later I've changed it to Super-sledge, because everything else has simply worse damage. It looks like I'll be using it till end of the game (most enemies are 1 hit, and I play on Very Hard). So, I don't see the diversity of guns here: my whole game will end and I've used only 3 weapons. What's the point of having multiple mods, if most of them won't ever be used, because more advanced mods are completely deprecating older ones? This is actually called 'leveling', not 'modding'. If you have a better mod, you won't use the worse mod. Mods should be diversive and should introduce new traits that sometimes can be used and sometimes not, not simply gaining more p0wah!@#. Mods in Power Armors are nicely designed though.

    4) Interface. "Junk" is managed well, I like it very much that the player can stash every junk item from inventory into the workshop by hitting T key when browsing the workshop. This is very nice. I wish there could be a way to stash "unneeded" items into the workshop, or shop, in similar fashion. I mean, nearly every walk through the city results in killing enemies, because they respawn. If every enemy leaves loot, and player is expected to take it, then the player should be able to tag items which are taken with selling in mind, tagging items which are taken in checking them later, etc. I.e. I would wish to somehow create a category "shop items". When picking up items, it would categorize those items as "shop items" the moment I pick them up. Then, when visiting the shopkeeper, I would hit "T" and all items that are marked as "shop items" are moved to the shopkeeper. I then decide to accept or deny the transaction. This would make selling loot a lot less cumbersome. And now it is, because there are TONS of items in this game. Not really much diversity in them, but in terms of volume.

    5) For me, Fallout was about exploration. World exploration, game exploration, character exploration. I liked the idea that I didn't know what perks I could choose at some point of the game. I liked the surprise that the game gave me when it allowed me to choose a new perk that was awesome. It made perks valuable and it created an immersion of achieving something that you didn't know was there previously. Fallout 4? Every possible perk is offered right on the beginning of the game. Even if you can't choose it because you don't have enough stat points, you know what's there. You can even browse through perk levels, to know that it will do if it's on higher level. Hell, you can even modify your primary stats. I feel like another Fallout core trait has been changed to something that is not nearly as fun.

I have more thoughts about this game, but I feed there's no point in writing them all. I mean, the game is done. It's too late to change it. I'm sad :(.

They nailed the marketing, the hype levels for this were astronomical...they sold so many copies that porn hub had a massive dip in viewers on release day. I have invested an absolutely embarrassing amount of time in the other Fallout games. Like, I could have written some novels...some GRRM novels. This one I put in about 30 hours and I am done. Its not a roleplaying game. Its kind of like a super clunky post-apocalyptic far cry. Its a sandbox action game. It's still a fun game, its just that the other fallout games really tap into something s.p.e.c.i.a.l. (get it?) and it seems like the people who made this game have no clue what that is. Every single quest ends in massive bloody violence, there is barely even the illusion of choice, there is no sense of progression, no feeling that you have earned any kind of victory. Seriously within the first hour I had Power Armor, a minigun, and had killed a deathclaw.
They are going to make a boatload of money, the whole pre-order racket has seen to that, but where do they go from here? They are loosing the old school fans, and gaining a super fickle audience that they simply can't maintain. This game is aiming for the Call Of Duty, Assassins Creed, Far Cry Crowd. Those games have several things in common. Cutting edge graphics, super tight game mechanics, and MULTIPLAYER. Also bland, boring, and repetitive game-play.
I'm not a graphics guy. I love 8 bit games and indie stuff, but this game looks rough. It looks PS3.5. The animation is busted all to hell and its just crawling with bugs. I am playing on the PS4 and it has the most obtuse nonsense IU I can imagine, Vats feels more like a cheat code than an essential part of the game, and the whole settlement building mechanic feels like your building a level in an old Tony Hawk game. This game simply has no multiplayer....which is what keeps people playing and thinking about these properties in between releases. Bethesda games don't usually need this because they are packed with alternate paths, emergent gameplay, and varying play styles. In Fallout 4 you start out as a character who is good at just about everything. Leveling up works more like character bonuses. I don't mind some of the streamlining here. The way the system is setup is interesting, but its just that you can't really make a character that's bad at anything. If you are out of vats you are just as likely to hit your enemy with a rocket launcher as you are a pistol or an energy weapon. There aren't really fail checks. You either can do something or you can't do it. No system of chance. So its really difficult to create a "build". Also some stats are useless. Since this game offers no choice and every mission just ends in a bloodbath charisma does nothing except occasionally allow you to extort some extra money out of people.
By far the worse thing they did was give the protagonist a voice. You can be a man or a woman. Your choices for role playing are 1. a concerned mother who is a saint, 2. a concerned Mother who is kind of grouchy, or 3 an incredibly BLAND concerned father who is a saint, 4 really really whiny (yet concerned father) who doesn't make a whole lot of sense.. That's it. I played through the first time has concerned mother who is a saint. The VA for the female MC is great. Yes they options are super limited, but I liked her characterizations and I felt connect to her. I decided for my second play through that I would play a male character who was kind of the opposite. The male character in the game is an ex soldier (of course) so I thought about playing this really scarred guy, violent, cruel, shell shocked. The moment he opened his mouth it was just ludicrous. All of his dialogue just became parody. I had him refuse to help one NPC, just really giving her **** condescending, insulting....dudes a turd, and then because you have to do the goddamn quest to complete the game I agreed and he just looks at her and earnestly vows,"I will find him for you. I promise." I wound up going to the plastic surgeon and making him look like king diamond and shutting the game off.
The story has some interesting twists and turns. There are several companions, but really there is just one. Nick Valentine is one of the best NPC followers Bethesda has ever created and he deserves to be in a better game. My choice of faction in the end really really disappointed him, and I genuinely felt kinda bad about it. You also get a scraggly dog that more or less is a walking cheat code. He can carry all your extra junk and somehow unlock master locks. You can seriously get one of the best guns in the game just by having the dog search the beginning area. So yeah, rent it. Go in with reservations. Its not really an

rpg. As a game were you shoot monsters in the face its

pretty fun, but if you are an old school fallout fan, or an

avid rpg lover....its a huge disappointment. Somewhere I

imagine Nick Valentine, Harold, and Bob are sharing a drink,

and wondering about what kind of micro-transactions, and

online multiplayer death matches they are going to have to

    get into with Fallout 5.

We must first agree that this Fallout game has had more commercial hype and popularity than any other. It seems that almost everyone gamer was excited about this game, most never the others. One who loves Call of Duty and Halo might love the action aspects of Fallout 4 but trash the rpg elements of the game. Basically without getting to into it, it seems that those who love the Fallout universe love Fallout 4, while those who never played any of the games or just New Vegas (which wasn't even made by Bethesda and didn't have much to do with any of the main story points) don't think positively about the game. Let's get the good stuff out of the way - the artwork is lovely, all post-apocalyptic Americana, vast landscapes, and truly gruesome creatures to shoot (and run away from). There's huge detail in this world, tons of customisation options for weapons and armour and lots of places to explore, all with their own stories and characters.
    Now for the bad:

    1. Crafting and grinding. Hate it. A big feature in this game is hunting around the vast map for screws, metal and bits of leather etc to beef up and customise your weapons. That, in turn, involves negotiating a long-winded and counter-intuitive set of branched menus. This kind of stuff is a time sink and bores me to tears - they feel like the online equivalent of errands.

    2. For what is billed as an RPG, the actual options for interacting with characters and the dialogue you're given is fairly limited. The script is fairly cheesy and/or boring, and you get the feeling it doesn't really matter much what responses you give. In some cases, the phrases your character actually utters do not match the decision you've chosen on the dialogue wheel.

    3. So let's move onto the shooting. It's not bad, but it's not good either. We're talking Half-Life / N64 Golden Eye-style floaty, weightless, puppety shooting with poor hit-tracking and vague aiming. Come on, it's 2016, gamers deserve better.

    4. The story itself is kind of uninspired. Without giving too much away, you're basically looking for a lost family member, which is all well and good, but the way the game is set up there seems to be no urgency in finding your loved one at all, and instead the designers seem keen to sidetrack you into all manner of side quests from day one.

    5. The graphics are decidedly last gen. While the artwork is nice, faces still look doll-like, lip-syncing is off, animation is mostly robotic and lighting is weird (a canine companion you have early in the game seems to glow in the dark). I'm playing MGS5 at the same time, and there simply is no comparing its flawless animation and gorgeous landscapes and characters with those in FO4.

    6. Bugs bugs bugs. Lots of them. Dialogue that ends mid-sentance, NPCs that randomly pop in and out of view, and annoying companion AI that seems determined to ignore your cautious apporach and run into all manner of monsters and draw them to you.

    7. Ugly and counter-intutitive UI. It's basically green type on a black background, like on 80s computers, which I suppose the game's designers have implemented for effect, but which seriously cramps usability. You have to navigate reams of menus containing tonnes of found objects and negotiate a very basic map of a vast world all on a small, menu-driven green-screened wrist computer. Annoying.

    8. This game makes absolutely no concessions to casual gamers and those new to the FO universe, such as myself. There's no tutorial and a lot of mechanics are left unexplained, forcing you resort to online guides. Also, unexpected difficulty spikes - one minute you're picking off basic ghouls and dogs, and the next you're repeatedly floored by some massive creature that came out of nowhere and will require you to scrounge for more kit for the next few hours to upgrade your weapons.

Overall, this simply isn't my type of game (it was a Christmas gift), as I simply don't have the time or patience to wander around for hours picking up bits of wood, screws and metal to make weapons. Even then, if the story was great or gunplay good, I might have continued, but that was not to be ufnortunately. Shame.

This is my first review on Metacritic. When reviewing this game it's important to know that I am a huge fan of the Fallout series. I have never anticipated a game more than I have this one. It delivered everything I was hoping it would be. If you're looking for a fast paced game, this is NOT the game for you.

When reviewing this game, I think it's important to know that it takes some time to get going, especially if you're going to compare it to the other two incarnations; Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The first 10-20 hours of gameplay are very similar, with some notable differences in gameplay mechanics that I feel are a major improvement. One of the alluring things about Fallout is that you can get started and then abandon the main storyline for a long time without worrying about coming back to it.

There are so many things you can do in this game before worrying about the main story, even avoiding the faction storylines leaves plenty to do. The thing I love about this game's story, and if you don't give it time to develop you'll miss out, is how the main story blends in with the faction questlines with a great surprise. I didn't see it coming, and I thought I knew about most of Fallout's secrets.

In reading a lot of the negative reviews I can only guess that people were either looking for a fast paced game, or didn't give it enough time to develop. I play over 70 in game days before I even touched the main storyline. There is that much to do.

I travelled all over, found most of the bobbleheads, built my level up and maxed out the few perks that I found the most useful. The settlement building mechanic is unbelievable. The weapon modding mechanic is so much fun. These two aspects make almost every item valuable for something, whether it be for making a silencer for your shotgun or a painting for your living space.

I find the FPS aspect of the game much improved. I hardly use VATS (the computer assisted targeting system) at all. The baddies are harder (think World War Z zombies) and smarter.

I have not had a single glitch playing it on my PS4. The load times are acceptable. The graphics aren't spectacular, but considering the sheer size of the game, I have no problem that the graphics aren't the best. They are definitely an improvement over the previous incarnations of the series.

If you want a game that is very involved, a lot of variety (from what I can tell, there's at least 6-8 different ways to play the story and get a different ending), and play time value for your money, Fallout 4 is the best game available.

So, here we have it at last, Fallout 4. I have now about 650+hours in the game, and i am currently at level 108. Finished the story and most likely almost every side quest there including the recently released Automatron DLC.

My toughts about the game, this is where things get a bit tricky. I so much wanted to like the game, because i waited so long for it, but on the other hand i can't ignore what Bethesda did to the game i got used to with Fallout 3 and especially with Obsidian's Nev Vegas. So to make it short:

    Positives:

+ Graphics are better, there is do denying it
+ Sound and audio overall is excellent
+ Game works lightyears better than Fallout 3 & NV
+ Shooter..ing mechanics actually work this time around
+ There are some good characters in the game
+ World is filled with points of interest and places to explore
+ The building mechanics are a nice plus
+ Automatron added more meat to the allready nice building mechanics
+ The new survival-mode is definitely a step to the right direction (a big plus)
+ Definitely worth the money, considering the time i have sunk into the game
+ Has a ton of replay value
+ Seemingly quite frequent content updates and patches

    And to the negatives:

    - The overall presentation feels a little unfinished, tough it seems to get better via patches
    - Some heavy alpha effects may, in some cases, kill the performance of the game
    - The music in the game, or rather the lack of it is a bit disappointing
    - The story is.. well.. sob story of the century
    - Player choise has been taken away almost completely
    - Player actions have no consequences, excluding the few story related decisions
    - Majority of characters are immortal, and some of them really get on my nerve
    - Lack of interesting and actually challenging enemies, like cazadores "cough"..
    - Lack of interesting and unusual events, like we had with wild wasteland trait etc.
    - Lack of unique quests that made the FO3 and NV so much more enjoyable
    - Lack of interesting characters. DLC seems to add more tough.
    - Lack of proper dialogue options and the overall dialogue system is absolutely horrible
    - No option to disable character voice acting alltogether
    - The RPG-elements of the game are butchered to oblivion, except Oblivion was more of a RPG than this
    - Skills, you actually earn by various activities are gone, replaced by base skill attributes (S.P.E.C.I.A.L) and perks chart
    - Any content directed to more mature audiences are gone
    - Romance mechanic feels really shallow
    - Monotonous selection of clothing
    - Legendary weapons don't feel special/rare enough, and are too easy to obtain
    - Radiant quests clearly suffer from a lack of effort
    - Building mechanics lack in content, tough future DLC seemingly adds more
    - Settlers have only few tasks, it eats up any leftovers of the allready minimal immersion
    - The AI is often quite wonky, especially when it comes to settlers

So there you have it.. The list would proprably be several pages long if all was to be added. So overall i feel like, as long as the game is played as a open world action shooter with some rpg-mechanics/elements, it's quite enjoyable. But as a Fallout game, it most definitely falls a bit short.

Anyone who didn't play this game for about at least 40 hours, can't review it! The game is awesome! Bethesda made some bad decisions by removing some features from Fallout 3, but they improved the game in other aspects. Combat is way better than F3 and NV. The power armor and weapons upgrades work nicely. Graphics and sound effects are very cool! Loving it so far!!

A little bit down the road in the story you get your first (of many, oh so many) settlements and the buildtool is introduced. Now while it first the tutorial limits itself to learning you about the basic needs within Sanctuary, later on you stumble, upon settlements without adequate housing and you quickly notice how flawed this buildtool really is.. Why not a topdown view?! A grid? Anything other than this crap?

Now as you progress through the story another problem emerges : framerate issues. Especially in the conclusion of the different faction arcs you experience framerate that is close to gamebreaking.
The story, and this is a personal matter of course, is rather weak compared to previous installments.
I was also missing an evil faction to join or support.

Now, this might seem like I'm hating on the game but I don't.. The wandering, exploring and looting is as fun as it will ever be.
Modding weapons is great. Legendary weapons are great.
Some of the restyled enemies look cool.
The perk system has been looked at, the level cap removed allowing you to become the ultimate wanderer.
The power suit as a battle-harnass is pretty cool.

All in all I had fun with this game and it is without a shadow of doubt an addition to your collection, but as it is it doesnt merry a score above 8.

I can't stress this enough: ignore all the negative reviews. They were written by angry immature players in an attempt to "metabomb" the game. Fallout 4 is an amazing experience you don't want to miss out on.

This is a classic Bethesda game, and any fan of the company knows what this means: a huge and beautifully modeled open world filled with hundreds of quests, NPCs, secrets, and Easter eggs - and an equal number of glitches. If you can think of a bug, it's probably present in this game. Sound issues, UI glitches where your Pip-Boy and guns suddenly disappear and you can't click on anything, NPCs and your character getting stuck in pieces of furniture... the list would just go on and on. By now we all expect Bethesda's games to be like this, though. The worlds they craft are MASSIVE, and creating a flawless experience is pretty much impossible at this point. I've encountered a fairly decent number of glitches during the past few weeks, and all of them were resolved by a reload/restart. I'm sure there are some game-breaking bugs as well, I was just lucky not to come across those. Bethesda keeps systematically patching the game, so it's only gonna get better.

If you're willing to look past the numerous glitches (and you want to, trust me), you're in for one hell of a ride. Fallout 4 has so much to offer I don't even now where to begin. You start off with a pretty good character creator and a smart little tutorial sequence, and then you're mercilessly thrown into a nuclear wasteland filled with mutants. You have a huge arsenal of weapons at your disposal, and you can modify these to improve their statistics. Mods require materials which you obtain by gathering previously useless junk that's lying all around. The same junk is also used to build settlements.

In Fallout 4 you get to build your own little shanty towns, fill them with settlers, secure food and water for your new population, and help them defend their new home whenever super mutants strike. The tutorial for your settlement is pretty much nonexistent, though. If I didn't go on the internet and read up on the mechanics, I still wouldn't know how to even connect lights to a generator. It's annoying and rather off-putting, and that's a shame because the settlement building is quite a deep and involving experience, and once you get the hang of it, it's really fun, too. Don't let this deter you. Once you know the basics, you can figure everything else out.

Gameplay-wise, Fallout 4 is solid. The controls are good, you have a hotkey for punch/grenade (tap R1 to punch, hold and release for grenade) which is very useful, and you can finally sprint now, thank god. It drains your stamina like it did in the Elder Scrolls games, so you'll want to get your agility as high as possible.

The graphics are underwhelming. Very underwhelming. PS4 can do so much better. While the environments are all beautifully detailed as usual, the textures aren't that good, and the NPCs look like something out of the PS3 era. Then again, good graphics don't equal good game. I still feel like it's worth mentioning.

The music is okay. No melodies that would really stick with me, not even the main theme, but it does its job. Sometimes it sounds a bit too fantasy-esque and like something straight out of Skyrim, which is a bit odd. The player character is fully voiced for the first time ever, and I must say the female Sole Survivor, which is what I'm playing, sounds very good. Actually, all characters I've encountered so far were very decently voiced. That goes double for your companions. Each companion NPC has a unique personality, and only a heartless player would not care about them. Getting the highest level of relationship with your companions also gives you special perks, so you will spend a lot of time with them. My personal favorite is Piper, a snarky reporter you meet in Diamond City, but I like all my companions. Yes, even Strong.

Overall, Fallout 4 is fantastic. It's a great game that has an insane amount of content to offer. In a world where games take a couple of hours to finish, this one will keep you entertained for weeks and months. I'm certain even years from now, people will still be playing and modding Fallout 4 like they did with Skyrim.

    On to Gameplay
the settlement building mechanic seems to have been lazily added last minute and gives nothing but headaches and horrible green graphic induced nausea. Do not believe the positive reviews. I see alot of 9 and 10 ratings with people saying they just started the game and are already hooked. trust me once you play this game for 10+ hours (or god forbid, attempt to replay with another character) you will realize how lame this game actually is. Fallout 4 controls are still way too clunky to be a good First person shooter and unfortunately bethesda has removed all the parts that classified fallout as a (light) RPG.

I will try to leave a full review here for those who actually want to read a good review instead of the mindless "Its the best ever!" or the "This game sucks ass!" reviews which seem far too common on this site. I purchased the game 5 days after the release date, so a fairly large patch was downloaded before I played. Be ready to wait before you play the game; the patch download took almost 50 minutes, but given the buggy nature of Bethesda, don't get greedy and start playing immediately, just be patient for the download. I have logged about 20 hours so far into the game.

    GRAPHICS: 8/10
They are average, if on the weak side for games in 2015. Having said that, they are still quite solid and I don't really understand all the negativity about this issue. The frame rate is pretty smooth and I rarely have any slowdown when playing, even against large groups. And once you're actually playing, you will never look at a shot of the city in the distance and think, "Well that's okay, but with a better drawdistance and some greater sync visualization, the city would have looked way better." All you'll think is, "Damn that's pretty sweet looking." The graphics are good enough, certainly enough at least to make you focus on things in the game other than the graphics.
Interiors of buildings are far improved over Fallout 3. Most importantly, there are vastly more tile-sets. Fallout 3 had sewer, office, subway, weird metal storage hallways, etc., but not much else. Here, there is a good variation of interiors so they don't just look all the same. And the color! This is the best improvement of all; there is actually a good amount of color to please the eyes in this game. For those who got very sick of the brown and greys of Fallout 3, expect a lot less of it here.
Faces and NPC's are graphically okay, but can be a bit washed out at times. Character animations during dialogue sequences can be weak, but really who cares that much? People are being so whiny about this, but big f*king deal if a few lip-sync lines don't line up great. Does it matter? Is that why you play Fallout?

    STORY AND MISSIONS 8/10
This is a mixed bag. The central story missions are by far the best and are actually really good. I have crossed a sort-of threshold in the game where things are starting to get very interesting. I really REALLY like the main missions; they are fun and are great at slowly expanding the curious nature of the events unfolding around the vault-dweller and his or her son. The side missions can be hit-or-miss. Overall, they're okay, but be ready for the majority of them to be the standard go-here, kill-these-guys, and retrieve some random thing missions. Now if you like that kind of stuff, including exploring the creepy locales as I do, it works out pretty well. As mentioned above, the vastly improved individualization of interiors does a lot to keep these locations fresh. Side missions based around the many factions that exist in the wasteland are somewhat better. Also, with so many factions, and some which seem so full of s*it, it makes it a tough decision who to be friends with. The Brotherhood of Steel makes their return, but they seem as ruthless and untrustworthy as ever.
Dialogue sequences are sometimes frustrating as it is impossible to tell what your character will be saying. Your answer choices to a morally complex question may be yes, no, sarcastic, or I'm going to kill you now. Usually you'll end up just picking the "safe" response since you won't know how sarcastic or rude other answers could be. Some dialogues will include possible optional answers which will net you experience and better results, but expect these to fail nearly every time unless your charisma is pretty high. And honestly, who wants to pump tons of special points into charisma?

    INVENTORY 9/10
The inventory management is great, if not a bit confusing at first. The customization of guns and armor is a HUGE plus over Fallout 3. Junk is now worth collecting since you can scrap things for parts. And even if those parts don't upgrade your guns, they can be used to build up your settlements. Settlement building is VERY confusing and comes with virtually zero assistance, so be prepared to fiddle with this for some time. By this point, there are enough websites out there that should help you get started if you're struggling, which you probably will. Once you get the hang of it though, it can be pretty fun. It may get dull if you're not willing to commit the time needed, but that's okay since settlement customization is completely optional. For some really crazy ideas, check out youtube to see what some people have created. It's some pretty cool stuff.
Weight management is still a concern, but there are several perk levels which can increase you're carrying capacity to a solid level.

    GAMEPLAY AND GUNPLAY: 8/10
Not great, but fresh and fun. Character limit up now. Bye bye

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is definitely going to be game of the year with a large open world, a large variety of perks, weapons, armor, and so much more.

A Dead Land: The game excels when it comes to its open world. Lots of enemies, new ways explore the world, and it's been reported that Fallout 4's map size is 11 minutes long vertically. And trust me it's large. The game looks gorgeous with a new creation engine. Some people say it isn't graphically up to date but you have to admit, it is a giant leap from Fallout New Vegas (2010). Plus with lots of new radio stations and lots of side quests in which other companions could possibly react towards the actions of these side missions and some may interest you. You can also create your own settlement that you have to keep resourced, defended, and a simple place to let settlers rest and go on with their business.

200-Life Crysis: The game takes place a few minutes or hours "depending how long you create your character" before the bombs have dropped. So you soon enter Vault 111 where a freak experiment goes horribly wrong. Since your 200 year cryogenic stasis, takes you deep into the future in where you have to find your son Shaun who has been kidnapped by the institute a isis like group who kidnaps survivors of the commonwealth. So it is your job to take him back.

Guns n' more bullets: Shooting is more playable. V.A.T.S. is still a thing in this Fallout installment but shooting a gun feels more shooty than your average Fallout game. Your guns no longer break so you can shoot with letting it break but it looses a more survival focused aspect but I didn't like survival focused aspects anyway. You can also customize your amazing little guy into a F***ing beast, with re-naming it, adding new weapon mods that are available to all weapons. Legendary enemies drop legendary loot and it is either amazing or surprising. You can also choose when you want to get a critical strike on an enemy or not. It you get enough hits on enemies, you will build up a bar that will fill up and create an execution command and vats no longer pause the game it will slow it down the game leaving vulnerable to an easy but cheap death, so act fast.

The Uglies returned: Enemies look more disgusting and more terrifying than ever before. With new ones such as bloodbugs and synths. Oh and if you hate deathclaws they're back and deadlier than ever. Enemies with a star next to them represent Legendary enemies. Enemies featured with a skull next to them, f***ing run. You can guess who is the first is to encounter.

Packin' a punch: The amount of base perks built in to the game are over 70 but go a little deeper and you will find over 200 perks. How, they are counted a mini perks to a perk. Let that sync in to your head before moving on. Bobbleheads make a return but a little more impactful than Fallout 3. A little hint the perception bobblehead is the first to be found usually.

The game runs at 1080p, 30fps or so I've heard. Smooth for the most part but sometimes dips but no where below 20fps. Lowest: 26fps that I have seen. Also mods are on PlayStation 4 now. WOOHOO!

I love the Fallout universe, and have played all of them, With New Vegas being my favourite. But I don't love this game, and cannot see any replay value in this game.

    Firstly the positives:

The combat/gunplay system is much improved. Enemies are quick and move about a lot, making VATS seem much more important and useful.

The looting system when picking up items is also a lot less time consuming, something that has always annoyed me in 3 and New Vegas

The graphics, for the most part, are decent, not the best for a supposed 'RPG' but Bethesda have always been lacking in that department.

Companions have come to life in this game, having some sort of background, a quest for each one, and actually react to your actions.

Weapons/Armour crafting: In my opinion, this is a welcome addition. It makes for a broad spectrum of weapons that you can create, tailoring them to your playstyle or wants. It can be quite tedious collecting the parts to make them, however the grind makes it more satisfying when you can finally improve that Sniper of yours.

The radio: Favourites of Fallout 3's songs make a return, as well as others that are a welcome addition.

    The Neutral Stuff:

The Story. I won't spoil anything, but it didn't invoke any emotion out of me, nor did I feel any emotion for the character I was playing. However, some of the main characters that you meet are interesting, and the 3 main factions do pose a moral dilemma.

The settlement building. Getting to 100 happiness for one of the settlements was a real grind, and not an enjoyable one. Spending all my caps on stores that I never used and doing the same boring 'Clear out X' quests was not fun either, so much so that I changed the difficulty from Very Hard to Very Easy just to do it quickly. However, I realise that some will love this setting, as it does give the player freedom to create their own little town/village.

    The bad:

The dialogue: While in some ways I have come around to like the voiced protagonist, I despise the fact that you can only choose 4 different options, which are normally always Yes/No/Sarcasm(or asking about reward)/Question. This is a step down from previous titles and makes conversations feel like they have no depth, or that you have much of a choice.

The S.P.E.C.I.A.L/ skill points mechanic. Charisma is ridiculously overpowered in this game, and abandonment of skill points was not needed, nor anyone was calling out for. It worked in the old games, and I see no improvement in this one. You cannot roleplay to the same extent that you could in previous instalments, as the skill point system has been taken away, and the SPECIAL points don't really change the story of the game, something they could do in previous ones. It does feel dumbed down to a certain extent.

Facial Animations. While this isn't much of a problem for me, I can see how this will be very annoying for others, and it can be immersion breaking during some scenes.

In conclusion, to me, this feels like a game that has not been fully thought through, not listened enough to what the fans of fallout really liked about the previous games, and have started to abandon what makes a fallout game, fallout. It has been dumbed down, tailored to a much wider audience, which I feel may have distanced the more devoted fallout fans. On its own right, it is a good game, but for a fallout game, it hasn't lived up to what it could and should have been.

the minecraft experiment is a huge flop.
    no skills is a flop.
accessibility and streamlining is a flop.
the quests and writing are flops.
the land is empty and full of repetitive enemies and objectives.
    zero need for replay.
    zero rpg mechanics.
and, lots of typical beth-tastic, shoulder-shrugging, non-caring bugs and glitches.

there is almost ZERO meaningful content OF ANY KIND in this game. you will play and a few hours later realize you've wasted your time for a few minor examples of "fun."

i would have NEVER thought what began with morrowind (for me) would end in this hack game that proves beth doesn't care about their products anymore.

unfortunately, there are still many foolish gamers who think this OBVIOUS piece of trash is worthy of release.

the sheeple masses will flock, but, hopefully all of us intelligent gamers who care about the industry and rpg's specifically will vocally DENY the next elder scrolls sham.

The story has always been a strong point of the Fallout series, and it's no different here; immersion is done well, and the stories are deep and interesting. Voicing the main character is a nice design choice, but can be a bit jarring (although the 'sarcastic' remarks make up for this).

As with all Bethesda games, there are a few bugs; after 80+ hours I've seen some minor clipping issues, a deathclaw that disappeared for half a second, and a follower that was stuck until I moved far enough away. If I look at other games, and especially at previous Bethesda games, I am impressed with the low number of bugs!

Fallout 4 in my opinion has this smooth fluidity that mad Skyrim so special to me: forget about the game, get into the world.

I think the only way to be dissatisfied with this game is to expect a game that wouldn't bring anything new to the Fallout franchise. Although I miss certain things or a certain feeling from the previous games, Bethesda really blew me away with this one, and I think it's the point in the end: play an extraordinary game that you will enjoy.

First group probably played in rush to make a review and you can see from what they say and write that didn't made big progress in game. That is not their fault, only a couple days for Monday (end of embargo), also at beginning I thought that title is really good. The problem is the more you play it, the more bad mechanics and ideas you see. I am not talking about graphics or bugs. Really for so huge game bugs are normal and never in my case they limited or destroyed my game play. Of course I got like 1 game error on ps4 and 3 times game didn't start properly (same error, I had to start game again from system menu) during 55-60 hours of game play. These are not a reason that will make me to give that game 0/10. No I accept that in such project over time after patches most of those issues will be sorted.
I also have to mention graphics because people give fallout bad review just for this reason. On ps4 game looks worse than on PC, sometimes framerate drops, not all textures looks sharp. But still overall game looks nice,

Real problems start when you progress in the game, start to make all of those quests along with main one. Actually yesterday after around 60 hours of gameplay I decided that I can't play this game anymore. I didn't want to force myself to finish it. I cleared my head for a day and started think why is that. I liked fallout 3, I know it is not fallout 2 that I played more than 10 times. Ultra fans have to accept the fact that bethesda has rights and can do their own vision. Personally I played Wasteland 2 and enjoyed it because it was closer to f2. On the other hand I accepted Fallout 3 for what it is, I try to be open minded and liked a lot of it. Really ppl should treat this as spin-off the f2 and move on.
What made me to quit playing fallout 4?
I got bored with this Call of Duty game on rails. Most of quests are "go there and kill, or bring something back". This game lack of variety and bigger consequences of player actions. Sometimes I got impression there is no reason to even read/hear the conversation because I have only impact on order of interaction and not shaping my story. I understand that main plot has to be directed and I accept that. Actually main story is not as bad as ppl say and the development of it is quite varied. But when you create world of crafting where you manage resources for building settlements, armor, weapons or even just hunt for caps you make players to do side quests. That's good cause you think that it is your journey. The problem is that most of those quests are just go and kill, so on one hand you experience different places, enemies but in the root of the concept it is so repetitive. I got bored at some point. It is shame that so much time and money went to make this unique world, cities, ships, npc's and bethesda made everything behave the same. I experienced the same pattern of gameplay most of the time, of course in different unique places, but really does it make this game feel unique?

Still we should thank bethesda that as a package this game is big, I think lots of gamers will spend a lot of time with it. In fallout main plot is varied but the rest is like copy paste pattern. I had impression that Bethesda accepted that it should see this project in broad perspective. What are currently 2 most played games? Minecraft and Call of Duty. Sorry to say that but fallout looks like this kind of mix. It is not bad in terms of direction. Games have to evolve, crafting for me is ok, especially weapons and thank Bethesda you didn't make them to get damage o break. Cool that ammo does not weight anything. Shooting feels good, vats is also ok for me.
I remember on mission when I had to go to some plant to make it work properly again for some farm, I had to kill mutants but also interact with environment so it was varied enough to keep me interested. But later the same pattern is used to clear some place of ghouls or mutants etc. Millions spent for graphics, engine, programmers and really it is so hard to make some good scenarios for missions?

I am in point where I know I will buy next fallout game but also I suspect I will not be hayped that much for it, just because of curiosity and sentiment. This is actually bad for bethesda because decisions to target broader audience (cod, minecraft) will backfire in shrinking their audience. This could be a perfect game, there was so little effort to do that, just make mission more unique. Unfortunately someone decided to simplify everything and enjoy shooting.

This game is bad in many aspects - rpg elements, AI, no freedom of choice, strange weapons system. But story and graphics are even worse. I don't understand, why Bethesda produced this trash. Very sad for me. Fortunately there are another good developers.

A strong return for the franchise, boasting incredible customisation, a fascinating world and brutal yet brainy shooting, slightly tarnished by lacklustre AI and tedious inventory management. [Christmas 2015, p.88]

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
