The game was Censored with a patch after they sold people on it. That is false advertising. Would not recommend. Fairy Tale being censored? If they spent more time and effort on actual game development, then the game may have received warmer reviews. They obviously have their priorities messed up.

The combat is okay and the characters are enough to spark joy in any fan but the whole game seems rushed. Lots of cut corners.

I can't help but feel pretty disappointed. When I look at a lot of stuff with the game I feel like it's all just done so lazily. The characters look weird sometimes and move oddly a lot. Like it's definitely apparent that their movements are many and stiff or flow around way to much (Wendy walking around like she has rubber hoes arms 180°) then when you are somewhere like the guild HallI can't help but feel pretty disappointed. Like it's definitely apparent that their movements are many and stiff or flow around way to much (Wendy walking around like she has rubber hoes arms 180°) then when you are somewhere like the guild Hall characters just stand around like status, never move, and that's with the characters that aren't missing which a lot are. Characters even missing in the main story cut scenes and I thought that was kind of a let down because I like the characters that were gone. Then other characters will be introduced but you'll just be looking at an empty room and their picture will show up with their dialogue, but it just seems so lifeless. Talking to an empty table because they didn't actually add the character in the game, and again it's a lot missing. The gameplay is cool but expect frame rate drops though they aren't to bad. Whoever did the special effects for the magic deserves a raise though because they always looked great! There's a lot I'd like to touch on as well but really I think the game was made without much of a passion at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright so let me start with this, I really wanted to like this game as a huge fan of Fairy Tail. I've read the manga watched the anime (bought it as well). However, no matter how much I like the series this game was a giant middle finger to the consumers.

So, let's start with what it actually got right
-The RPG combat, surprisingly works really well and feels good (although extremely easy at times)
-The abilities are pretty good looking for the most part and feels rewarding.
-decent amount of costumes to unlock during the game play.

Now sadly, we move on to the negatives (yeah not many positives here)
-The story...okay, i think this was probably the biggest insult to any of the fans. It goes from the END of the Tenrou Island arc, even though it states it includes it. It legit just the time skip for the 7 years. and it goes through to the Tartaros arc which is cool you think you are getting a lot of content and will be kept busy for awhile. Wrong, even though it covers several long arcs the game leaves out almost all the story driven plots to make you really care about what happens, for example Ultear's sacrifice for someone that never really watched/read fairy tail would feel lack luster and pointless.
    - The game feels VERY incomplete to the point where the characters are actually having conversations with characters that aren't even present in the game due to them not being modeled in. earliest example that I can recall is Meredy when Jellal is talking to Natsu/Erza about the grand magic games. She will have dialog and fully voiced however you never see her due to her not having a model in the game. In certain cases they will just show a still image of the anime scene as a place holder when people are talking and have no model, or there is scenes where everything is voice acted except for 1 person who wont have a model and is just dialog, even though they are a major character.
-the side stuff...holy hell the side stuff...umm the "community service" quests in this game are absurdly lazy they are fall under "can you bring me 1-3 of x items" these items you legit just find while exploring or killing monsters so there is no uniqueness to these at all and the rewards are for the most part uneventful.
-The monsters...okay so prepare to fight a little over a handful of monsters (besides story bosses and some story events) so basically you fight wolves, flutter's (birds) the beast man, some tiny whales that are on land for some reason, golems, and dark guild mobs every now and then for almost EVERY single request on the request board making every single thing you do to rank up the guild feel like you've done it multiple times before.
-And the worst part is that after all that and not even a week after release they add $50+ in costumes then a $59.99 season pass. I could have let the rest of this go and give the game in its current state a 5-6 but when they game is so unpolished and then they have the nerve to charge $60 for just a few bonus missions and what looks like a few more playable characters? unacceptable and if I owned it on steam i would have asked for a refund when i first noticed the issues.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. **Update** I felt I needed to update my review after playing through the game. The combat is pretty good. The actual cutscenes (the few there are) are decent as well. Buy like many others have said, the missing character models are inexcusable. I'd also like to mention I was pretty annoyed no changes were made to Wendy when she achieve dragon force, which doesnt make sense considering both Lucy and natsu character models change for a particular move and dragon force respectively. Same goes for Gajeel's iron shadow dragon form. I understand the dev team was in a limited budget, but come one. Finally to my most important point the DLC. This crap is stupidly over priced, the season pass costs as much as the game, and single character packs are $20. I wish I wouldnt have bought this game. Which makes me very sad to say, because its my favorite anime. PLEASE DO NOT BU THIS GAME, Unless it is extremely cheap. The only reason I did, was because I wanted it to do well. We havent gotten a fairy tail game in quite some time. I would rate this game higher but I don't appreciate buying something then I DO NOT get what I bought. The graphics are ok, the gameplay is cookie cutter turn based strategy. But the censorship is not appreciated. I definitly want my $$$ back. . I also want to ad Fairy Tail is my favorite anime, so it pains me to leave a bad revieww for this game. But the fact theyd bend a knee to people that dont buy their games, well leaving a bad review is all I got isnt it Expand

Not one week after release, Koei pulls another Koei, which means cut off content is added for additional (quite outlandish) prices. Classic Koei/Gust. Living up to their reputation.

3 extra costume packs, which could have been added in the game itself, for 40 bucks a piece. This comes at 2.50 per costume, or 3.49 if you want to buy them individually. Naturally, a season pass was added,

3 extra costume packs, which could have been added in the game itself, for 40 bucks a piece. This comes at 2.50 per costume, or 3.49 if you want to buy them individually. Naturally, a season pass was added, with characters already existing in the game being added, as well as an extra difficult dungeon, s-rank requests and such. With a game already sorely lacking any difficulty, these could just as well have been added in the base game. All this pleasure for the mere amount of 59,99.

So let's say, you wanted everything the final game has to offer. You'd need to buy the deluxe edition, 3 of these costume packs, and the season pass.
Depending on region, for US, that would mean 74,99+(3*39,99)+59,99= 254,95 (!)
EU regions the deluxe goes for 84,99 euros or higher.
All this for a few dozen hours tops singleplayer experience. If Koei/Gust wanna bank, Koei/Gust gonna bank.

The game itself, the main characters themselves look quite good imo, the combat also looks quite good. These are the things that were made good and flashy enough to haul in the cash of the fanbase. Everything else though basically screams low effort. Bad animations everywhere, cutscenes containing characters nowhere to be seen. Walking animations look horrid. Laughably so btw.
It is, like previous Gust/Koei work, painfully easy. Hard mode? Nothing hard about it. Zero challenge. You would need to sabotage yourself to make it so.
Multiple copy paste npc's all in the same area. Oftentimes walking right next to each other like one-egged twins. EVERYWHERE. Low budget is not an excuse here. This is just lazy design. Which can also be seen in the environments, which consist of the same looking, smallish, linear forest areas. No real diversity to be found. Quests outside of main especially, are often badly written, with many plotholes and often bad looking cutscenes. And they usually consist of simple fetch quests, or kill x amount quests. Everything, outside of the main characters which they made sure to look good, just looks like it was made with zero effort, blended together so it could be shipped out as fast as possible, but looking good enough to feast on the wallets of unknowing fans. It is really quite noticeable for anyone with a decent enough understanding of dirty business and sales.

Gust/Koei always has used fanservice as a main selling point for their games. Hence why they usually add dlc with the better costumes and such later on to try and wring out even more money. You might even say this for difficulty: why add in higher difficulties as paid dlc when the game's already too easy to begin with (just like they have done with all their other games)? Makes you wonder they make things too easy on purpose. Cause for sure, Gust/Koei are notorious for cutting off content and releasing it for way too high prices not much later after release. They live off this extra income and they count on it.

But, even more outrageous is, even though Gust/Koei use fanservice as one of their main selling points to established fanbases, post release there was a patch brought out, that removed scenes from the vanilla game at release. POST RELEASE. On purpose, they waited till sales were made, then at point of no return for many customers who chose to back their product, released this patch and change the whole thing that is one of the main selling points of their games, betraying the goodwill of their loyal customers.

There is no excuse. Koei/Gust, whilest capable of good work, have chosen the easy path once again to prey on the wallets and faith of their loyal customers. Furthermore, they take advantage of established hardcore fanbases of beloved series, knowing they do not need to put in much effort to make the sales. Plus, cut off content the vanilla game could've seriously used, on purpose, to wring out even more money. And they know exactly what they cut off. The good difficulties, the fanservice. And then somehow, betray people who buy based on that selling point, even further by then CENSORING the overall thing post-launch. And not just Playstation, every system. Only PC users will be able to use mods to remove this pile of blasphemy out of their excistence later on. Good they have that. Poor console folk however, will not have such luxuries.

There are no excuses for such behaviour. It wasn't a great game to begin with, a good concept, held back by lazy execution, with preying on goodwill and wallets of a pre excisting fanbase in mind.
They know exactly what they are doing, and always they can walk away with it. They should be called out on this so they change their ways and create what they ARE capable of, a whole experience top to bottom the fans deserve to get. A game made out of love for the medium, not out of love for money and shady politics.

The DLC is a giant waste of money as it currently stands and doing an EPIC action anime as a turn based battle engine is such a lame way to go about translating this world to a playable format.

They didn't even bother animating all of the celestial spirits and side characters robbing the players of some amazing moments and stripping the game of some battles that would have truly been incredible (most notably Jura vs Laxus).

Really just a waste of money at the 60 dollar price point, and the DLC is a total cash grab. I was super excited for this game and I'm majorly let down.

Fairy Tail is a good gift for fans of the series, but everyone else will not understand the enthusiasm of the characters, the history of their relationships or the rules of the world. The attached encyclopedia offers a brief reference, but this is clearly not enough for a full immersion. Of course, the leader of the Fairy Tail Guild Makarov can attract, but this will only cause a passing interest among newcomers. Bright fights and magic delight, but the slow story with boring tasks and pumping make you yawn from the monotony. But if you are a fan of the original manga or anime series, you can safely add one point to our rating, because you will find yourself in the world that you have been waiting for.

Although minor things like no English voiceover work set back the overall quality, I still find Fairy Tail to be a step above most other anime-based games. The quality of graphics aren’t top-tier for a modern 2020 game, but they look pleasingly anime-like in color and design so it doesn’t feel like a throw-away entry of any sort. Overall, if you’ve been itching for a new anime game and you love Fairy Tail, then Fairy Tail on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC is a fun and refreshing new take.
