The mystery is very interesting, but thats it. You can not pick up and examine anything in the game and in my opinion the walking is too slow and with no sprint can lead to a long boring stroll. The game is touted by many professional review sites as an open world game which is only technically true. Going through the game a majority of the buildings are locked and there are many roads you cannot go down on top of that there is a marker in game to keep you on the correct path through the world. I feel like the game was more like a open world guided tour than a open world exploration. This game overall was very over hyped and I personally am very let down overall. Expand

This isn't a game. I'm kind of furious that all the good reviews for this software tricked me into paying $20 for it. But since you can't actually see the dead people (just the ball of light), they mean nothing to me and I can't even remember who they are from one "scene" to the next. Besides walking around and watching light balls talk, the only thing you can do is open doors or turn on radios. The radios are basically the same as the light balls, just play the voice of some dead person. Just in case you were wondering, the story is not interesting or intriguing at all. It's a very generic "end of the world" scenario which is further damaged by the inability to care about any of the characters/light balls. This is one of the worst non-interactive non-games I've ever had the misfortune of spending money on. Expand

I went into the game expecting to be solving mysteries and discovering items, possibly find a single weapon with 3 bullets and 4 evil scientists or something crazy like that. But nope, you can only press x and get halted by bushes and 2 foot fences. The abundance of this game is to walk around and listen to audio tracks or watch light figures of dead people talking. There are only 3 things to really do, walk, open doors, and press x. You don't do anything really substantial, heck, you can't even jump/crouch/ or interact with barely anything. 8/10 for it's open world visuals and story, 3/10 for game play. Expand

Also, if you lose sight of the glowing orb, make a wrong turn or try to deviate from the linear path (mind you the areas are al fences in artificially) you might as well just give up. The only other solution is to maybe try to walk back the ENTIRE course of the map to find the orb (if you are lucky). Oh and there are lens flares galore and fields of wheat which are same color as the glowing orb.

In the end, I wouldn't even call this a game. It has a mediocre and disjointed plot and horrific linear pathing, if you want to enjoy nature actually go outside - you can come up with your own plot and get lost without glowing orbs that blend in with lens flares.

You will also need stimulants.

In order to get this title to the point where I would feel comfortable actually calling it a game, the developers would've been wise to offer some concrete objectives and other conventional gaming aspects. By design, EGTTR is more like a "walking sim" with an abundance of emotional baggage. It plays out more like a very, very slow paced e-novel with only minor differences in play through depending on the order that you choose to progress across the town and countryside.

In DEAR ESTHER, the Chinese Room's glitchy previous title, they offered flag collection tasks as well as other standard game play conventions like object manipulation and problem solving. Some structures like this to assist in solving the mystery of RAPTURE or a real presence of danger to the player would have added greatly.

That said, I've given 4 out of 10 stars because the environments are beautifully constructed and the story is enhanced by a haunting soundtrack.

I sincerely hope this studio is able to continue together. I feel, in spite of the troubled titles so far, it's clear to see the potential for this small crew. With a solid game idea built around their obvious skills, they could be the independent crew that gives us the next DISHONOURED or PORTAL

In this glorified Walking Simulator, you just mill around aimlessly with nothing to do. Occasionally you stumble upon some little narrative and that's about it. There are no puzzles, enemies, power ups, objectives or literally anything else that make a game a game. I'm guessing the same people that enjoy this as a game are the same types that see a complete random splash of paint on a canvas and start talking about how emotionally stimulating it is.

Now if you have been desperately looking for a game that you can play in front of your Grandma without stimulating her in any way because she has a heart condition, then this is your game. Otherwise save your money and PS4 memory.

Only minor problem i had with the game is that you walk a bit slow and you can't really run which if you don't like a slow pace game. This one unfortunately has neither and to top it of it has horrible controls. To make the game longer the developers probably thought it would be a good idea to slow the main character down as much as they could and it is unbearable. Sometimes you feel like walking underwater. Worst spent money this year.

The setting is quite nice, you’re in probably the 80’s or something like that in a small village in England (or the UK anyway); I won’t go into details, I don’t want to spoil anybody, but the village is deserted, nobody is around, some kind of anomaly has happened. Anyway, the game is about you walking around the village looking for things that will trigger some kind of flashback and therefore you will unfold step by step the story. In terms of a game, it is quite a calm, relaxing slow experience. You walk around see the next small chunk of story. It is a game where the narrative is the main element. So those for you that are looking for some adrenalin or some thrill might want to look somewhere else. However, if you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, with a story, full of mystery and some drama, this is your game. I don’t want to go into too much detail (and I won’t) but the story is interesting so if you’re looking for that I doubt this game will disappoint you.

Graphics and sound are good, nothing that will make you go wow, but they serve their purpose and some of the views are quite nice, it is overall a visually nice experience.
Only bad thing I can think of is that I found a couple of bugs while playing, nothing mayor but still a bit annoying.

Summarising, looking for a relaxing adventure game that plays like a walking simulator and has an interesting story? Stop looking, you found a good game and you’ll enjoy it. If you’re looking for something more “active”, maybe you want to look somewhere else.

When looking at the outdoor scenery this walking simulator looks amazing, the really atmospheric British countryside looks very realistic. However the speed of movement (there is no real run feature just a slight jog) and the lack of puzzles makes this a bit of a dull experience. When this is so little to do then I would rather just watch the movie version or read the book...

This game is a pretentious walking simulator. It hides behind atmosphere and gorgeous graphics, but, ultimately the experience boils down to a glorified platinum trophy hunt. Slow walking speed is infuriating and the story is, well, predictable from the title. It's not good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sometimes you need to take a step out of your comfort zone when gaming, and experience new things, im very reluctant to do that, and if im honest I look down on Indie games as somehow not worth the money.

I took a chance on Every one’s gone to the Rapture, and actually I wasn’t disappointed entirely.

The first thing to make clear is, this isn’t a game per se; it’s a narrative, a collection of spoken accounts that make up the overall story. The basic premise is, ultimately, everyone is dead, right from the off, there is no one, you are tasked with piecing together what happened and making sense of it.

As you enter the small village of Yaughton in Shropshire you notice a glowing ball of light, and this will be ultimately your guide throughout the journey you embark upon, this spirit if you watch it carefully will show you where the major points of interest are, but it’s important to stress that it doesn’t go everywhere and you will need to be nosey to learn all the information, for instance taking a woodland footpath will often lead to hushed conversations and side lines in the major plot, and its actually critical sometimes that you hear these in order to make sense of everything.

As you wind around the village and its surrounding area you learn that something catastrophic happened here, some celestial event has wiped out Yaughton and ultimately the world.

What starts as an isolated village soon becomes apparent to be something bigger than they anticipated and it’s too late to stop it.

The main characters Stephen and Kate are scientists, and for most of the story argue a lot about what to do about the being that is killing everyone, the real gem here is that the stories are so personal you can’t help but get involved, I don’t want to spoil too much, but you gain the most from this adventure by taking your time and exploring and listening, and more importantly understanding what is going on, it took me 30 mins to realise who I was and why I was seeing the things I was, but the ending made little sense and didn’t really explain everything, I still have unanswered questions and that is one of my gripes.

What you do learn is that everyone gets infected and eventually dies, after nose bleeds, headaches and other symptoms, it doesn’t explain why some people turn into ash or just disappear, my gut feeling was it was a radiation type of thing inside some alien being that came to earth via the black hole event that took place, but that’s my theory, it’s a frustrating story as well as a rewarding one, you also garner that the event has already happened and you are witnessing something else, some sort of echoes stuck in time.

Lots of questions are generated by story and ending…

For example, what exactly happened, I get that an “event” happened, but what exactly…? Why do I see spirit echos from the past? Why me? why at the end do I see myself disappearing? These questions are never answered, or if they were, not clear enough that I grasped it first time through, and the explanation that is read out at the end gives some wishy washy sentimental reason how were all dead now, but were together, and that life will go on after were gone (humankind)…. Sigh.

The graphics are truly beautiful as you can see from the screenshots I’ve added to this blog piece, but what really sets this apart from anything else is the music score, it’s one of the best I’ve heard in a long long time, the timing of the music with the events that unfold is truly an emotional thing and it’s hard to describe, I caught my breath a few times when the sunlight hit the trees and the music kicked in with its haunting, lilting meoldies and voices, truly inspiring at times.

My biggest gripe with this title, is the time it takes to play through, even with the imposed cripple speed walking, the story can be told in 4 hours of play, for £12.99 that’s pretty poor, there was a massive amount of un explained stories and theories that could have been put in to fill out the story, but weren’t.

Having said that, I would recommend Every one’s Gone to The Rapture, it’s an emotional journey that all PS4 players should undertake, and ultimately form your own theories about what is going on and why.

I rated 8 because its short, something are unexplained even at the end and its a bit slow moving about.

Its written in the user manual. That being said, the point of the game is not to speed through it. Its to listen carefully and see the state of the world. You SHOULD be looking at all the details. Those posters that say the goings on of the town are important to the story. The variety of tiny details gives the environments their own stories. The musical cues and various sound effects draw you to investigate certain places and help with pacing. The few emergency vehicles present are few in number for a reason. The intimate look into the lives of the other townsfolk give context to the rest of the story. Story

The story in Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is an intriguing journey that doesn't hold your hand throughout but instead gives you pieces of story in the form of light "scenes" that play out across the environment, and as you progress you piece together what exactly happened in this town, and I found myself constantly shifting my theories as I discovered more information.

    Graphics/Performance

This is one of PS4's most gorgeous looking games, with great lighting effects, the only thing that i did notice was there was some slow down during some parts of the game.

    Gameplay

The gameplay is as you would expect from a first person exploration game, the only gripe i have is that the speed at which you traverse is a bit too slow and can sometimes be a drag.

Overall EGTTR is a great FPX with an intriguing story and a gorgeous world that is strung together nicely with the narrative. My only problem is that the ending didn't quite make sense to me and the traversal could have been sped up a bit.

While the debate over how "game"-y this product is, I enjoyed DE because it showed and told; EGTTR wants to just show, but does so in the slowest way possible. For me, the 'game' element has to be enjoyable while one plays it; it's not. With DE it was. Beautiful graphics enhanced the narrative, which had a meaningful pace to its mystery. Here, the pace is squandered on tracking down 'the light.'

It's gorgeous. And that's about it.

One of the lead voice actors I recognized from "The Last of Us," so perhaps no fault of Chinese Room's casting, but it was distracting for me as well.

The threads of the "plot" are so bare and thin they're barely scraps to motivate you to move forward. The only thing pushing you forward is the innocuous feeling of dread despite no discernable threat in the game. Yet the dread you feel is hampered by the slow pace and arbitrary exploration one does to find the next small scrap of exposition. So the main driving force to push you through the story is contradicted by the game's own mechanics.

6/10 for a great story and graphics hampered by cobbled-design that worked for other stories, but not this one. The music and overall mis-en-scene of the game was the best part, but that's not worth 15-20 dollars American.

Everybody's Gone to Rapture is not perfect and oftentimes frustrating, but also hauntingly beautiful and intriguing. The game mechanic is simplistic and yes, it is slow. You walk around or glide around trying to piece together the story of why you are walking around the English Countryside, with seemingly no life except for plants.

The story is told through orbs of light, which represent the last moments of some of the inhabitants. The game unfortunately ends up punishing you for trying to explore every nook and cranny, since you are never sure whether a door will open or not and if you go off the beaten path, even with the run/glide mechanism it''s going to take a while to get back.
Also the game doesn't have the sheer gripping tension or sense of urgency/purpose that Gone Home had. Also the level of interactivity is limited and you just feel like you are walking around to get to spots so that more of the story is revealed to you and not that you are actually discovering it for yourself.
The game is designed well enough that everyone will at some point manage to reach the conclusion, but i don't think the narrative holds up when i was wondering everywhere and picking up snippets of what appeared to be disparate conversations.
The premise and conclusion is weak. But that is to be expected, explaining a supernatural phenomenon of light that wipes out all of humanity is pretty hard and they just about manage to keep it from becoming too silly.
It's a good 4-5 hours of a unique if imperfect experience that just about justifies its price point after adding the PS+ discount.
Since the world is already created, if the Chinese Room were to provide more stories of people into the game as free DLC, it may actually become a more fun experience. Because right now it's just too empty and there is just too much real estate to cover for meagre rewards.

This Game is set in the County I was born and raised in. So I had an immediate interest. Shropshire in England I can tell you for a fact is the greenest county in the UK. The game shows off the Shropshire countryside In fantastic detail.

The things I like about Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture are many: the self-paced discovery and chronological asymmetry, the significance of entangling yourself in a visually “complete” environment, the poignance of a well-crafted, well-delivered character exchange. I’m just not sure how often I’d want to repeat the experience.

The slow, idyllic exploration, paired by some good narrative make Everybody's gone to the Rapture something that should be played, but only by those with patience. It's a sluggish walk to the end, that pays off, but probably not enough for many players.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture claims to be something more than a game, but that claim is completely groundless. [10/2015, p.50]
