The mystery is very interesting, but thats it. You can not pick up and examine anything in the game and in my opinion the walking is too slow and with no sprint can lead to a long boring stroll. The game is touted by many professional review sites as an open world game which is only technically true. Going through the game a majority of the buildings are locked and there are many roads you cannot go down on top of that there is a marker in game to keep you on the correct path through the world. I feel like the game was more like a open world guided tour than a open world exploration. This game overall was very over hyped and I personally am very let down overall. Expand

There are occasional phone calls and memories but they are absolutely on the forced path. Also, if you lose sight of the glowing orb, make a wrong turn or try to deviate from the linear path (mind you the areas are al fences in artificially) you might as well just give up. The only other solution is to maybe try to walk back the ENTIRE course of the map to find the orb (if you are lucky). Oh and there are lens flares galore and fields of wheat which are same color as the glowing orb.

In the end, I wouldn't even call this a game. It has a mediocre and disjointed plot and horrific linear pathing, if you want to enjoy nature actually go outside - you can come up with your own plot and get lost without glowing orbs that blend in with lens flares.

Only minor problem i had with the game is that you walk a bit slow and you can't really run which if you don't like a slow pace game. I don't think everyone will be able to appreciate for what this game is, if you are interested in it I would recommend you should give it a try on this short adventure. If not, then don't worry about it.

Note: I find this game very mild for being a M rated game, the only reason for this game rating is because of the few F bombs that were mostly used near the end of the game

This is decent interactive adventure game. It is quite a nice concept really, so you walk around looking for spots that trigger conversations that tell you the story. The setting is quite nice, you’re in probably the 80’s or something like that in a small village in England (or the UK anyway); I won’t go into details, I don’t want to spoil anybody, but the village is deserted, nobody is around, some kind of anomaly has happened. Anyway, the game is about you walking around the village looking for things that will trigger some kind of flashback and therefore you will unfold step by step the story. In terms of a game, it is quite a calm, relaxing slow experience. You walk around see the next small chunk of story. It is a game where the narrative is the main element. So those for you that are looking for some adrenalin or some thrill might want to look somewhere else. However, if you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, with a story, full of mystery and some drama, this is your game. I don’t want to go into too much detail (and I won’t) but the story is interesting so if you’re looking for that I doubt this game will disappoint you.

Graphics and sound are good, nothing that will make you go wow, but they serve their purpose and some of the views are quite nice, it is overall a visually nice experience.
Only bad thing I can think of is that I found a couple of bugs while playing, nothing mayor but still a bit annoying.

Summarising, looking for a relaxing adventure game that plays like a walking simulator and has an interesting story? Stop looking, you found a good game and you’ll enjoy it. If you’re looking for something more “active”, maybe you want to look somewhere else.

When looking at the outdoor scenery this walking simulator looks amazing, the really atmospheric British countryside looks very realistic. However the speed of movement (there is no real run feature just a slight jog) and the lack of puzzles makes this a bit of a dull experience. When this is so little to do then I would rather just watch the movie version or read the book...

Impressive visuals tempted me to purchase this game, but I wish I hadn't. The story, while interesting to begin with, gradually slips into the depths of tedium over time and by the end it just feels like a "go to point A, go to point B, go to point C" list of things you have to do in order to rid yourself of this nightmare.

While the debate over how "game"-y this product is, I enjoyed DE because it showed and told; EGTTR wants to just show, but does so in the slowest way possible. For me, the 'game' element has to be enjoyable while one plays it; it's not. With DE it was. Beautiful graphics enhanced the narrative, which had a meaningful pace to its mystery. Here, the pace is squandered on tracking down 'the light.'

It's gorgeous. And that's about it.

One of the lead voice actors I recognized from "The Last of Us," so perhaps no fault of Chinese Room's casting, but it was distracting for me as well.

The threads of the "plot" are so bare and thin they're barely scraps to motivate you to move forward. The only thing pushing you forward is the innocuous feeling of dread despite no discernable threat in the game. Yet the dread you feel is hampered by the slow pace and arbitrary exploration one does to find the next small scrap of exposition. So the main driving force to push you through the story is contradicted by the game's own mechanics.

6/10 for a great story and graphics hampered by cobbled-design that worked for other stories, but not this one. The music and overall mis-en-scene of the game was the best part, but that's not worth 15-20 dollars American.

Everybody's Gone to Rapture is not perfect and oftentimes frustrating, but also hauntingly beautiful and intriguing. The game mechanic is simplistic and yes, it is slow. You walk around or glide around trying to piece together the story of why you are walking around the English Countryside, with seemingly no life except for plants.
The story is told through orbs of light, which represent the last moments of some of the inhabitants. The game unfortunately ends up punishing you for trying to explore every nook and cranny, since you are never sure whether a door will open or not and if you go off the beaten path, even with the run/glide mechanism it''s going to take a while to get back.
Also the game doesn't have the sheer gripping tension or sense of urgency/purpose that Gone Home had. Also the level of interactivity is limited and you just feel like you are walking around to get to spots so that more of the story is revealed to you and not that you are actually discovering it for yourself.
The game is designed well enough that everyone will at some point manage to reach the conclusion, but i don't think the narrative holds up when i was wondering everywhere and picking up snippets of what appeared to be disparate conversations.
The premise and conclusion is weak. But that is to be expected, explaining a supernatural phenomenon of light that wipes out all of humanity is pretty hard and they just about manage to keep it from becoming too silly.
It's a good 4-5 hours of a unique if imperfect experience that just about justifies its price point after adding the PS+ discount.
Since the world is already created, if the Chinese Room were to provide more stories of people into the game as free DLC, it may actually become a more fun experience. Because right now it's just too empty and there is just too much real estate to cover for meagre rewards.

Everybody's gone to the Rapture is better described as an interactive experience, with the same level of interaction of watching an episode of Murder She Wrote. It feels so poorly paced and bloated that I just wanted it to end. The story is nothing ground breaking, but the method in which it is delivered killed it for me. It's like reading a book one paragraph at a time, between each you go and perform a house chore. The "characters" are nothing more than mediocre stereotypes pulled straight out of Agatha Christies reject bin. Simply put; Are the greatest stories you have ever heard the stories you we're told in nursery school? Do you love the depths of the characters from Emmerdale? Do you lie awake at night mystified by what could possibly be inside a Kinder egg? Do you love listening to your neighbours argue and wish you could Voyeuristically sneak into their house when they go out? If you're blinded by "OMG look at the pretty graphics", and you don't mind simulated walking, for hours at a snails pace around a beautifully crafted representation of middle England, just to discover that, there's nothing to really discover, than Rapture is the interactive experience for you.

Just wait until the game is free on PS+. It's not really worth the $20.

I absolutely love old scifi radio shows and it's a very beautiful game, so really this ticked a lot of boxes for me. I can see the criticism that having everyone represented as light was lazy but I think it's done incredibly stylishly, and makes more sense and has more impact as the game goes on. So if you're on the fence, I think you'll come to appreciate it.

However, what to make of the story? Well it's no slow burn, dropping you into the plot surprisingly quickly. In retrospect, I feel somewhat cheated by this. The game offers you several characters in order as you progress, and they talk to each other a bit and that's about all it has to offer. Then you reach the end and you've learned very little about the "scifi" part of it, and if you're unlucky, learned little about the people too.

I found that if I didn't constantly look for the orange blob, I had absolutely no idea where to go. Without it, I would be so lost that I'd have to close the game (there's no ingame Quit option) and reload, just so I'd be near the last checkpoint with a chance at catching the orange blob again. This meant that I could never really explore, because losing track of the blob was such a nightmare, and ensured that I didn't get to fully appreciate it all. I'm sure this is in large part down to my fault, with more time and more love, and maybe a pen and paper, I could have worked through.

Checking the trophies is the most damning evidence though - 2.8% of all players managed to see all of the story before the end of the game. Perhaps we're playing it wrong, but I feel like that is a massive failure on the part of the developers. The trophies suggest there was a modest wealth of things I could have done that I just didn't know about - interacting was such a rarity that it was tiresome to keep checking anything that wasn't a door or a phone. This is a brave attempt to go without holding the hand of the player, but ultimately if 99% of the things I look at aren't responsive, I am just not going to spend six hours still trying to interact with everything I look at.

I want to love it, I do love parts of it, but in the end the story never quite becomes memorable and it's not a very player-friendly result. Fortunately there's still old scifi audio dramas on the radio.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have gamed for over 35 years. The games that I have recently played or will play are Fallout 3 (played) and Fallout New Vegas (played), The Last of Us (played), DC Universe Online (playing), Until Dawn (upcoming), Just Cause 2 (played) and 3 (Upcoming), Fable 3 (played) Far Cry 3 (played), Infamous (played), The Evil Within (just finished), Crimes and Punishment (playing) and Monopoly (played). So you get an idea of what I have under my belt going in to this experience.

This is not my kind of game yet I appreciate its development. I'm going to keep it short. I do not play sports games and I do not play or like medieval games. I really enjoy the music and the scenery. It is one of the most casual gaming experiences one could ask for. The subtle atmospheric changes within the game explain why you have to move so slow. They system can't handle you moving at the same time the sun is changing positions in the sky. Also apparently acceptable is invisible walls.

The 5 rating is generous in my opinion and it's only due to the graphics and story line. I fell asleep having to meander around so slowly. I found that the attempt at an open world experience with a linear story line is not good. If you do not hit each of the points you are supposed to hit because you were wandering and exploring, the story doesn't unlock and you'll find areas like the Main Hall and the Train Station glitched out because you missed an interaction waaay back at the beginning, which you have to walk slowly all the way back to. The lack of an on demand map meant that until you because familiar enough with your surroundings, you'd have to walk aimlessly to the next map point only to realize that is not really the way you wanted to go. The pace of the game is so completely frustrating that being forced into an experience was too frustrating for me.

I do like the lack of skill trees, points, levels, companions, any physical self rendering, ammo dumps, jump scares and cheese zombie quantifiers. I did not like the movement speed and brainless strategy where a leaf would keep you from moving in the direction you wanted to go but a wheat field could be wandered through without issue. I would have more fun banging my head into a desk surface, personally and if you're getting a breast reduction and will be bed ridden for 4 weeks, this game is probably right up your alley to help pass the time. That's right I said it!

Also let me sum up the story for you:

    setup-setup-setup-setup-setup-setup-setup-setup-setup-setup->super vague explanation THE END

With intertwined some depressing familly drama from side characters, wich is actually the only "midly" interesting thing about the game. The two heroes being as unlikable as humanly possible, you end up hating them 5 minutes into the game.

Dear Esther was better, more poetic with a natural flow, and I daresay, more beautifull.

But hey, this kind of game deserves to be supported at the end of the day if we all want gaming to grow as a medium.. So maybe buy it as a contribution to the cathedral of gaming as a culture, as it's still super shaky. A for effort, D for execution.

An interactive movie...or something. I even managed to get confused. There are these points in the game that are supposed to alert you to a part of the story you can kind of initiate with your controller. (about the height of player control) It shows you how to do this at the very beginning, but I played a bit when I first got it, then fired it up a couple of days later. By the time I ran into one of these "points" again, that required interaction to initiate on my part, I had forgot. I walked past dozens of those points, always wondering what the hell they were for. LOL. The main parts of the story unfold without you shaking the controller or whatever it requires at those other points, so I got used to the story just unfolding on its own. So I missed a good chunk of the story because of this gimmicky "interaction" they threw into the game . I only figured out what I did wrong nearing the end of the game when you have to interact with one of them to keep the story going. I had to youtube a walkthrough....then remembered. I havent played the game since, much less finished it. Over all, as long as you are aware what you are getting, it does tell a haunting and well thought out story. The most annoying thing about the game is how slow you walk, but this only becomes pretty tedious if you're replaying the game to pick up missing trophies or story events you missed. Considering you walk pretty slow though, it's nice to see that the game isn't too long, lasting about 4-6 hours. If you are a fan of exploration and narrative games, this may be worth the full price. I loved the layout but would have killed for a sprint button (yes there is R2 to move faster but this really does not cut it!)

The story and atmosphere had me hooked up until the last 30 mins where it felt awkward and does a disservice to not only the entire premise of the game but also to the story that was being told and destroys any replay value which is a real shame as everything up to that point was brilliant.

I have high hopes for the Chinese room's next game.

On that note I strongly recommend using subtitles as it is difficult to tell the voices apart from one another by sound alone. Also useful would be a notepad so you canOh boy. Where this 'graphic/audio novel' is let down (i'm sure you've read about it by now) is the snail paced walking/jogging and that 99% of your environment is fixed; you cannot really interact with anything except for radios, telephones and monitors.

And that's it really. Rapture is damned pretty but you'll need an open mind and a lot of patience to endure this one. Sadly for me that is exactly how it felt towards the end - a test of endurance.

When the game first came out i was excited about the concept of it, a beautiful looking game in an English village about the disappearance of everyone, but at the £15 tag for a walking simulator i chose to wait. And i am glad i did! It is currently free on ps+, and it is kind of worth the download.

And i am glad i did! It is currently free on ps+, and it is kind of worth the download.
The game - although not exactly bad to look at has terrible visual flaws, there is one part where there are 8 candles for instance, you walk in between them and they stop doing their motions as you walk, it suffers from little visual laziness which spoils things a little.
The physics on the other hand (or lack of) is quite funny at times, i couldn't quite figure out why i could "walk" onto a shopping trolley in someones garden but couldn't walk onto a tyre, and there is a park in the game, there is a football in the park, you see a ball and you have to try and kick it right? Well in everybody's gone to the rapture...you can stand on footballs! you cant kick them granted, but you can stand on them!
Now here comes the biggie in laziness - being English it was painstakingly obvious that research was not carried out very well, they got some English voice actors who done relatively well and they done a fine job of interior and exterior design, but when i came across a petrol station and the price was measured PER GALLON i absolutely lost my mind and this forced me to create an account here and leave a review. petrol is priced in litres not gallons in England! This led me to believe that they were lazy with the little details, and its the little details that make a game. For instance, having hands and feet would be nice!
It is an interesting story though and it is a story what people should care about mostly, i have not yet finished the game yet and i am about an hour and a half in, but i feel i have seen what there is to see.
If being a silent slow paced drone in a well rendered English village trying to find out not where everyone is (clues in the title) but how, then this might be for you.
Download it while its free and give it a whirl, if you don't like it, i guess you cant complain too much as it is free.
1 last gripe though - that light is...well, a light. Why can it not pass through me, why does it need to be in my way?

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is a beautiful looking game with an interesting concept but, in part due to the painfully slow movement of your character, it really is pretty dull at times. Over the last couple of years I’ve enjoyed a fair few story led games but whereas Life is Strange offers the player plenty of choices, or Gone Home kept proceedings contained within a small area and the play time down to little more than an hour, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture stretches out its completely linear gameplay (you basically just follow a ball of light around the village) to more than five hours. Some may find that the story, and the way it is told, are interesting enough to justify the running time but personally I lost interest well before the end. Expand

The things I like about Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture are many: the self-paced discovery and chronological asymmetry, the significance of entangling yourself in a visually “complete” environment, the poignance of a well-crafted, well-delivered character exchange. I’m just not sure how often I’d want to repeat the experience.

The slow, idyllic exploration, paired by some good narrative make Everybody's gone to the Rapture something that should be played, but only by those with patience. It's a sluggish walk to the end, that pays off, but probably not enough for many players.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture claims to be something more than a game, but that claim is completely groundless. [10/2015, p.50]
