Reluctant about the possibility of poor performance on the PS4 base system I just couldn't resist in the end and I'm glad I did pick it up anyway. The game for me is a brilliant piece of work. It plays like a SoulsBorne game and is relentless because you might just venture in areas you shouldn't ben at or there might be strong foes in easier areas where you didn't expect them. In the graphics department the 'legacy dungeons' feel more detailed than the open world but considering the PS4's old age it's no surprise. I'm 25 hours in so I've probably barely touched the surface yet this game is making me want to get back to the game... just a few more minutes just to realize a few hours have passed again; it's just so satisfying. Not all good news though, for me the major drawbacks are the crafting system which feels like a bad designed idea. 'Lets gather ingredients and craft items you just looted in the world during dark souls/bloodborne play throughs)', another issue for me is the side-quest tracking. You need a notebook to keep track of all that's going on. Expand

Honestly the best open world I've ever played. It's not a perfect game, but very few video games offer this kind of experience, so it's a 10 for me.

I wrote a 2200 characters review to be met with a 404 on submission and losing all I wrote.

I'll just sum it up. The 20-30 first hours in the game, it is pretty much a 10/10, which I'm guessing most of these review come from. But 70-80 in, anyone can see the flaw compound, and while its world building and graphics stay at a 10, the gameplay becomes obnoxious to say the least. I've

I've watched several streamers play the game and most of them seem to have their fun drop as the game goes and their only drive to finish the game is to satisfy their spectators. They are relieved when they finish the game but it is easy to see their bittersweetness regarding the game, not one of them reacted how anyone would react to a 9.6 rated game.

The game set itself high, and deserves most of the attention it gets, but a 10? not really. The first 20 hours I was "Wow, best game ever" too, but as you go on, it is more like "I wish I had more fun playing this".

First game I've ever platinum with over 200 hours of gameplay. This game is a masterpiece, made me want to explore every nook and cranny like no other. I had super high expectations and even then, it managed to surpass them. I've played all of fromsoft games, they managed to create the game of the decade.

That being said, that formula isn't for everyone and those that have disliked previous games may not find any reason to revisit the franchise.

The sheer size of the world and its ability to show the player new things even hundreds of hours in is a monumental achievement. In fact the size might be a detriment to the game because in the last stretch the game does begin to crumble a bit. Some of the gameplay limitations also rear their head towards the end, where all roads and playstyles must be funneled into the late-game story content. Still, even with some flaws and scars Elden Ring feels at most times like the epic and monumental game it is trying to be.

Elden Ring is a well-polished open-world adventure. Much of it is customizable to player preferences. From character design to which way to explore first, and more. The weapons and armaments are many. The game encourages various builds in concert with fight styles, from melee, to range, to a mix.

The game is known for difficulty, yet—despite the tendency of some to confuse difficulty with excellence—it offers the player a couple different ways to succeed. The first is obviously to develop skill, and for many players, this means much trial and error, learning boss patterns, and eventually finding a rhythm by which to win. A second method includes some of the first but also includes levelling-up before returning to a difficult boss or area. This is a great option that make it open to a larger variety of skill levels without flipping an “easy” switch per se.

Much of the visuals, environments, and boss appearances are intricate and cinematic. Exploration is encouraged and rewarding, finding new places, new save points, new caves, new powerups, etc. The game does well to follow the 30-second rule of filling its world with enough intrigue to never really get boring. The exploration and variety of NPCs, quests, powerups, places, etc. is the strength of this game. The experience is largely driven by where the player wants to go, with a main questline available at all times.

Despite all the adventurous and customizable positives in this game, it is far from perfect, despite such reviews.

What makes many of the boss fights difficult is a “one hit kill” move. A player may often methodically maneuver through a fight for several minutes and then fall to an “instant kill” only to lose all that time and effort for what amounts to a “cheap” move that often can only be anticipated by trial and error. Sometimes, the blow might come so out of nowhere, you won’t even know why you died, such as with the second phase of the Radahn fight if you happened to have the camera in the wrong direction during a mid-fight breather. Most fights have minimal cerebral solutions. Many don’t feel like they beat you in an even fight. They only beat you because of a knockout punch, including ones that put you (or your horse) in stunlock to then finish you with additional follow-ups. At the end of the day, “pattern” based bosses with the “one-hit” are rather cheap designs. It’s almost an illusion of difficulty, where a fight seems somewhat fair and a good rumble until they get in the “cheap shot” and that’s often the only thing that consistenly makes them difficult.

Also, too many games, including Elden Ring, create difficulty in part by forbidding “cancellation” of a move. Part of the game’s challenge is anticipating your melee or magic “wind up” time and delivery. This can last up to several seconds. It leaves your character vulnerable if hit meanwhile. And you can’t cancel out of it if you, the player, actually sees the interruption in time and has the reflexes to cancel. The controller will actually be impotent until the animation is complete. This mechanic doesn’t feel natural, as a real person would be able to cancel their own punch.

Another feature in some boss fights that is poor is the bosses that have a second phase that is independent from the first phase’s HP meter. Unless you want to scout out a fight by watching spoiler videos, there is no way to know how much pacing of resources you want to use in a given fight because most of the time, the HP meter you see represents the opponent’s total HP, not some surprise new “refilled” HP bar from a second phase. Things like this just make gameplay aggravating and unfun.

There are many consumable items, like greases or crab meat, that can be crafted or purchased and used as buffs. These last for a period of time. However, if you are killed, these are lost forever. They are not like runes you can at least have a chance to recover after you are killed. It made 1-time use items overly precious. Your inventory doesn’t return to what it was before a fight or last save. And with so many of the fights being trial and error, it’s very easy to burn through many such items for naught. Few tutorials seem to utilize these, either. The game simply doesn’t encourage them because of it’s loyalty to difficulty and unforgiving gameplay.

As a side note, the game creates a fictional world of peculiar, amorality. It helps to be a spiritually knowledgable or careful person when playing the game. Because in Elden Ring, it seems the lines between good and evil are often quite blurred, to the point where NPCs ask strangely worded things like “will you serve the witch?” which in base reality would be clearly unwise to assuage. But the game seems to blur or alter the meaning of things like witches, blasphemy, and other spiritual terms, while yet insisting on borrowing from traditional spiritual language.

The Game is really good overall, but is not better than Bloodborne and even ds3 for me, and i Will say why, the positive stuff, the Gameplay is soo good, the system of the progretion is better than ever, now upgrade stars to level 60 is worth It, the bosses are solid and the best part, the open world, is huge with a lot of content, you can explore everywhere and find a lot of stuff, with a lot of dungeons, that, i Will say the negativo aspect about them, but and the the Game until you beat morgott ( this is why i put a spoiler alerta ) is 10/10, but, there is some problema, the layouts of the dungeons are, way, too repetitive, the bosses are soo reused, why there is more than 10 tree avatares ? Why is Nine night Calvary ? Why is more than ten dragons ? Why main bosses are reused as well ? And the worst part beggins now, the Game past leyndell, the Game is soo poorly balanced, i want a reason of why most of the enemies three ahora you even with 40 vigor, i mean, you can beat every dark souls Game with like 25 vigor, but in elden ring, 40 vigor feels like not enought, and, i don't like that you have toincrease a lot one stat or you are dead, and the bosses OMG, fire giant sucks, he have more HP than most of the ds1 bosses hp conbined, is boring and deals ridiculous damage, soo, you have to upgrade vigor enought levels to not get one shoted, the god skin duo is literally the worst Boss in the series, at least bed of chavos have a little bit of originallity and the design was unique to be fair, but this is a mesa that don't work as a gank duo, the bosses alone are really good, specially the apóstol, that is the best miniboss in the Game, maliketh is awfully balanced, is like, Well, he have not too much hp, soo, let's make that he can one shot easilly the player with attacks that let's you stunned forever, like why ? Is not even fair, and malenia, Who banave that ? Well, she have thes same problem than a lot of other bosses, she is really fast, but still hits like a giant, if not harder, and she can heals, lo attacks and more HP that the halingtree, Well, a lot of bosses also likes Dodge all of your attacks and start attacking like a machine with poor Windows to hit them, Dodge is not Well rewarded, but is true that your posicion matters more than ever, anyway, this is almost a perfect Game, but for some reason, they balance this Game like poop and the bosses are like bloodborne spped qhile you are inds3 speed, but besides of that is another amazing Game of frosoftware

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. as a first time player of soulslike games, this is by far one of the most addictive games i've played in the past few years, say for Doom Eternal.
the bosses are great, with the one exception being Melania, blade of gimmicky garbage.
the enemies are fantastic, say for every single type of dog.
and this is the first game in a while that actually encourages multiclassing, so i got to have a lot more fun with feeling out my build.
there are still a few issues with wonky fall damage, a few outright unfun bosses, and a few enemies or hazards that just can't be blocked or dodged, which is why it isn't a 10/10 for me, but it's still gotta be one of the best games i've experienced in a while.

Probably my favorite souls game. Love the updated graphics, mechanics, and open world. Still wish there was more diversity in the games, besides just killing enemies or wish the enemies didn't respawn. Or a different way of collecting souls/currency. I enjoyed the first 40 hours or so, but the game just felt too repetitive of a gameplay loop for such a huge game.

Beautiful world design, awesome battles, great character design. I only give it a 9 out of ten instead of the full 10 out of ten, because for a newbie like me, it doesn't tell me where to go or what to do after I've completed a boss or objective. The story is complicated as hell but it's definetly my game of the year. Don't miss out on this awesomeness!

Elden Ring is a truly great game and a definite contender for Game of the Year, and probably the favorite to win the award at this point in the year.

My biggest negative of the game is the change in music the game uses. In other From Soft games there is no music while you're exploring, just your footsteps and the sounds of monsters and combat, and then when the music kicks it, so does the dread and realization that you're about to get your butt kicked. The music in older games sticks out more because of this and becomes more memorable. Other negatives are slight balance issues, performance issues regarding frame rates (dying to due to frame rate drops in a boss fight can be quite frustrating), and hit box/hit registration; while hit boxes are in general better compared to older games, the open world aspect can lead to environments really messing up hit boxes and hit registration.

Despite these flaws, I'm giving this game a 10/10 due to everything it does so right and so well. The best boss designs in the game are absolute *chef's kiss* and jaw dropping. The environment diversity is gorgeous and original. There is a massive amount of weapons, spells, incantations, weapon arts, et cetera, and just so many ways to play the game with all the different items and such. There is so much fantastic content in this game; where certain game companies (*cough* Ubisoft *cough*), From Soft has filled this game with boss fight after boss fight after boss fight, and then all the weapons, armor, spells, etc. that I mentioned before. Aesthetic is what From Soft does best, and Elden Ring oozes style and creativity like an open wound oozes blood. The game is just beautiful.

While the game is not perfect, it is still an absolute masterpiece, and I cannot wait to put hundreds of more hours in as I create more characters, play new builds, and experience as much as possible. Git gud, and don't you dare go hollow!

I felt like the map could have been utilized more because I felt tricked into some boss fights only to get frustrated and lose runes. Not a big deal, just an annoyance. Especially the Roundtable place when it said I would not be combatting anyone only to find that in a certain area of the Roundtable (when you drop down), you are. I found that to be very irritating because there was also no way to back out of that area. But, the game as a whole is very well done and I do appreciate the work that went into it.
