From Software has done it again. Defying tired gaming cliques and forcing gamers to come to grips with how much they don’t want to let go of handholding. ‘It’s got no story!’ - Yes. Yes it does.

After a steep learning curve in which, above all else, I learned to embrace failure, I discovered the real beauty of these games. Since then I’ve spent countless hours with each of the titles that preceded Elden ring and I can honestly say that it distills the best attributes of each of those games into something close to perfection.

Elden Ring is perhaps the most accessible souls game to date. While it can be immensely challenging from the start, the ability to explore a richly populated open world means that it’s not as relentlessly oppressive as the drudgery of reaching an impasse in previous titles. The revised combat and play forming mechanics imbue this game with a fluidity that makes it a joy to navigate, and the art style, visual effects and sound design are beautifully cinematic.

It wasn’t until I defeated the first major boss that I caught a glimpse of the immense scale of this gaming world. What’s more impressive is how organic and living the environments and encounters feel. I am truly awe struck by this sublime creation.

Admittedly I didn’t partake in much of the hype leading up to its release, and more or less bought it on a whim (usually I’d wait a few months until the game comes down in price); however, buying this game at launch is truly a worthy investment as the sense of community and discovery experienced by partaking in such a cultural phenomenon is nothing short of exhilarating. A word of advice for those finding themselves frustrated by its difficulty - try fingers, but hole.

Slight technical hickups don't distract from that, it's completely playable and often times very beautiful even on base PS4. They have taken the best elements from Demon's and Dark Souls game and combined them with an open world design very much in the spirit of that gameplay. Does not hold your hand, gives immense freedom in character builds, you can try to cheese enemies, you can grind, you can go anywhere, making this one of the most overwhelming, but also most accessible souls experiences.

The reward for uncoupling your brain from "but muh grephics! Where is the waypoints???!" kinda thinking can not be overstated. Instead of going through motions, you're forced to pay attention. Paying attention is a core quality of love. If you pay attention to this game instead of asking it to serve you its qualities on a silver platter you'll love it.

It might arguably be the easiest Souls game (in my humble opinion) but as a result, it's an excellent entry for starters in the From software formula.

I can however understand the frustration of casual gamers, this kind of game is not for everyone.
it requires the pleasure of persevering, the pleasure of learning and improving yourself through the struggle and the unknown.

A "great" game can gather most people's opinion, but a "masterpiece" can sometime divide.

I will conclude by saying this. This game has so mush love put into it, it has a soul... and the emotion you feel as you struggle in this world will give you one of the most satisfying feeling you will ever have in a video game after succeeding.

Some occasional frame drops? ZERO OUT OF TEN!

Are you people serious? The rest of the game is an absolute triumph of art and design, as well as a culmination of most of the best mechanics from From Soft's game library, but you'll trash it for stuttering every once in a while? The problem with Cyberpunk 2077 at launch wasn't just that it had a bad framerate. The problem was that it would crash all the time, the AI was atrocious, entire features felt missing, and characters would just spawn in random locations sometimes. Elden Ring hasn't crashed for me once, the enemy AI are quite sophisticated, the game is packed to the brim with great content, and mechanically, everything seems really solid. And the performance hitches will probably be improved with patches over time.

Do these people not remember Blighttown? Would they also give the original Dark Souls a 0/10 because of its occasional hitches? Or Bloodborne, which is locked at 30 FPS for the entire game? Is that a 0/10? Or Skyrim, which still has tons of bugs TO THIS DAY? Definitely a 0/10.

None of these reviews are serious.

The game is not perfect, and I can absolutely understand docking a few points for performance hitches or language limitations if those things matter to you. Maybe a 7/10 or a 6/10, or heck, even a 3/10 if those things really, really matter to you. But a 0/10 for a game that is so clearly not garbage is not a useful review to anyone. It's just useless spite from people who want to feel smart for not liking a popular thing.

Probably my favorite souls game. Love the updated graphics, mechanics, and open world. Still wish there was more diversity in the games, besides just killing enemies or wish the enemies didn't respawn. Or a different way of collecting souls/currency. I enjoyed the first 40 hours or so, but the game just felt too repetitive of a gameplay loop for such a huge game.

Been a while since I visited this site, but I wanted to talk about this game.

FromSoft's latest masterpiece doesn't really need very much introduction, especially since it had become THE most popular game in the "SoulsBorne" series of games that they've produced. Everyone knows (and probably expects) that it's a challenging, yet rewarding, experience that will last from when you first pick up the controller to the final time you put it down (which could very will be a long time away). You will explore, fight, die, and triumph over the odds, meeting interesting (and sometimes shady) characters that have their own agendas that may go with or against your own, as you have previously in other games under FromSoft's banner.

However, what sets this apart from other games in the series is the big genre addition it was given; Open-World. While previous titles did have exploration as part of the ethos (as finding gear and items will GREATLY increase your chances of survival), the games have always been structured as mostly semi-linear designs (with Demon's Souls being the closest to a linear style game). Many of them have been described to be akin to a Metroidvania (which I've recently began to disagree with, due to the many points of no return without teleporting), but it's very clear that despite the large area a player could see across the horizon, said player would likely only be able to explore a portion of it, with the rest being entirely out of bounds/blocked off/impossible to get to. General locations obviously could be seen and later explored, but restrictions are still placed that aren't immediately noticed (due to how well those games were structured, masking the linearity of the design).

Elden Ring, however, removes those borders. If you can see it, be a general location or a specific one, you can go there. The only borders that ever seem to be present are shore-lines at coasts around the country sides. The vast lakes, plains, mountains, valleys, beaches, hills, and plateaus that once served as background dressing that the player would only ever set foot on for a fraction of what was shown is now entirely open, explorable, and populated with a variety of creatures, items, materials, and points of interest, all of which are rarely shown on the map until you've physically come across it or mark.ed it down yourself. Even repeated sites, such as shacks, caves, crypts, ruins, or camps almost always feel different with different enemies, set ups, items, and significance to your journey. You'll never run into a location in this game and deal with it the exact same way, unlike most other open world games. Furthermore, due to how the game-world is structured, it's no longer impossible to be entirely stuck when hitting a "brick wall" (a challenge too high compared to your skills/stats), because now you can just... go literally any other direction, and find something else to do. That said, this also comes at the cost of meandering quite a bit around the vast landscapes of the "Lands Between", sometimes getting lost in over-leveled areas, or even indulging too much on exploration and resource gathering that you end up overpowering yourself and steam-rolling over anything in your path, which all can create a wildly inconsistent difficulty structure. Then again, because of the way it's built, it just means it really is up to you on how far and how often you want to go off the beaten path, how much you want to avoid progressing the story, and how much you want to challenge/unchallenge yourself.

Personally, it's one of my absolute favorite things about the game. I haven't felt this joyful, cautious, terrified, curious, anxious, awestruck, or anything else in between in an open world type game in a long time, entirely satisfying my desire to explore every nook and cranny I can find, no matter how mundane.

This isn't to say they've done away with the tight, inter-connectivity they had in previous games. Major points of interest (for example; Stormveil Castle), and smaller dungeons such as caves and crypts, are still very tightly and deliberately designed in the same style any SoulsBorne vet would be used to; semi-linear, interwoven and interconnected corridors and rooms, with secrets and alternate paths very carefully placed, with an attention to give hints to the player on how to get somewhere without any hand=holding.

Honestly, the only real major criticism I could give the game would have to be the heavy pop-in after you respawn/teleport to a resting place, as well as the frame-rate stutter when there's too much going on at once (seems to be less present in the PS5 version, but I'm not 100% sure on that). However, it doesn't quite detract from the gameplay, and the over all look of the game, even when just journeying from one end of the massive world map to the other, is absolutely incredible.

It will be a long time before I let this game lay down to rest. Happy Hunting, potential Elden Lords.

I felt like the map could have been utilized more because I felt tricked into some boss fights only to get frustrated and lose runes. Not a big deal, just an annoyance. Especially the Roundtable place when it said I would not be combatting anyone only to find that in a certain area of the Roundtable (when you drop down), you are. I found that to be very irritating because there was also no way to back out of that area. But, the game as a whole is very well done and I do appreciate the work that went into it. It is very fun to play, despite some flaws.

Similar to the rest of the Souls library, the game does share the same frustrating quirks like still getting hit through solid walls and the occasional bug or framerate drop (at least on last-gen platforms), but that's all outshined by the incredible presentation of the Lands Between, a place filled with so much mystery it's hard resisting the urge to discover and conquor everything there is to see. It may be too early to tell if this could win Game of the Year, but it's definitely a strong contender. Expand

As a seasoned DS veteran even I had a rough time starting this game. But for those newcomers, those who give up early and those who "don't get it" - you need to understand that it's your second attempt where things really kick off. Typically in a souls game you get crushed, you lose your souls, you invest in the wrong stats, but on your second attempt when you "get it", and you whack your souls in to your favourite weapon of choice you will breeze through what was previously difficult - and that's the hook to these games.

For Dark Souls fans like myself - it's an odd start. It's unusual to have the wide open world, however everything else plays very much like Dark Souls. As soon as I found my first cave, learned how to summon and whacked a few points in Dex - I was hooked. You can open your map - find something that looks odd, whack a beacon there and travel. You will gladly get distracted by interests and oddities along the way - and every little settlement, cave and outpost feels meaningful, with great rewards.

You have to trust in From. They have your user experience at heart. You have to know that these guys excel at hiding away incredible locations, quests and items for you to discover, and you're just not going to see any of that with 10 hours of gameplay. People are too quick to pick up a controller and give up nowadays. In the 90's when you had one game a year, you'd explore every inch. And that's how you play this game. It's a marathon not a sprint!

Ultimately - it looks, plays and feels like Dark Souls in an open world, with lots of smaller interesting dungeons and bigger set pieces. No - the graphics aren't incredible, but the atmosphere is there. The souls series has never set out to be a graphical masterpiece - and I'd rather they keep doing what they are doing, producing compelling, stellar games - than bust out one boring yet graphically impression EA / Ubisoft title per year.

You might be daunted by the big open world, whether you're a dark souls fan or not. I know I was - but trust the process and let it sink it's teeth in to you - and you'll be coming back to drop a 9 in these reviews.

The only real problem is there is a serious spike in difficulty when you enter end game areas. That does stand to reason but its not balanced with the game.

There are minor flaws like the need to play the game with a guide with how easy it is to break quest lines.

Some of the low level dungeon bosses are just plain terrible. Not difficult. Not imaginative.

The game has a high difficulty curve to start off with about till the point you get to Stormveil Castle. Then the game gets ridiculously easy through the middle until you start wrapping up content around the Capital city and spikes way further than it should and does not let up for the remainder of the game. Again, being a maso/core title you want an difficult ending but it should be within reason and not force you to have to rebuild your character in order to match a specific build. Thats one of From Softs biggest flaws in design. Forcing you to play a certain way even if its not technically required but the inflated difficulty leaves you little other option.

Another complaint is the clearly cut content and some of the dropped ideas. It also would have been nice to focus some development on archery from horseback which is practically impossible. Hopefully if there is an Elden Ring 2 it will add that cause with the addition of the horse that was a major oversight.

Also the quests could be a bit more intuitive. We dont want WoW/GTA holding your hand but we also dont want MYST level hands off either.

But all in all this is the most polished and closest to perfect offering we have gotten from FS. For all its flaws this is 2022s game of the year. Hands down.

A technical feat given how smoothly it plays on first generation PS4s. You wont find a deeper or more immersive game on PS4. If you dont sink at least 100/200 hours of your life into this world you are doing it wrong. I literally capped my play through at 999h 59m 59s and still have dozens of bosses to work through and content left to explore.

If you are capable of handing FromSoft type of games then there is no excuse for you to NOT have Elden Ring.

The sheer size of the world and its ability to show the player new things even hundreds of hours in is a monumental achievement. In fact the size might be a detriment to the game because in the last stretch the game does begin to crumble a bit. Some of the gameplay limitations also rear their head towards the end, where all roads and playstyles must be funneled into the late-game story content. Still, even with some flaws and scars Elden Ring feels at most times like the epic and monumental game it is trying to be.

However, this is also a fatal flaw of Elden Ring, as on subsequent playthroughs this allure for exploration is extinguished, as the excitement and wonder of discovering new places and dungeons is exclusive to your first playthrough (except of course of the areas you missed, which is probable).

I love that there is a myriad of builds you can try with the various weapons and spells.

This game doesn't necessarily feel like a pioneer in its genre, but a statement of everything that has come before in its genre, both the good and the bad, but 95% of the time the good.

Extremely vast, with amazing locations and cool personalities. Very fun, and keeps you wanting to play more and more.

Playing on my ps4 slim and it runs well(28-30 fps mostly. Good for 8 year old ps4). Runs better than bloodborne. Thanks to fromsoftware for this beautiful game. What an art design.

Expand

A great tribute to Zelda and the indie industry in general, as well as a story of effort and determination according to its developer and creative mind.

In the end Elden Ring turned out to be fun and quite challenging at least for me. The review is personal and subjective and is based on my personal experience in about 208 hours at the time of this review. P.S. Excuse me for my bad English. Expand

I'm not a fanboy of the Soul's game. I did demon soul and one of the dark soul only.
This Game is absolutely a Master piece.
In his type of game; there is no better. The level design is amazing. The open world always rewarding; all the secret cave and dungeon are so cool. you're always getting surprised somehow; they really did use their brain to build the game. You can feel the love

The Design of the game, dark medieval fantasy, is so well done!!
A true masterpiece; i really though the new about this game was just over the top as always with the media...but no.
    Masterpiece 9/10!

No matter how many studios try to replicate the formula, From Software is the only one that can deliver authentic Souls experience. [Issue#259, p.36]
