Typical souls like with a horse, but not the game of the year. Bloodborn looks much better

My first soul’s experience I enjoyed the game not the best game ever and dosent nail it’s open world as it feels empty like a shallow attempt at Zelda breath of the wilds format

    Too hard.

It's just not fun. And although they have introduced things like summons to make gameplay easier, unless you got like a lot of MP to summon a bunch at a time, it doesn't help much for specific enemies, or at least certain kinds of summons. And I don't want this game to just become a quest for finding a bunch of summons and grinding to get more MP, just because the game is just

I don't get how people enjoy such a game, dying so often. Some claim that after winning against a boss after having died to it multiple times feels satisfying. For me, a lot of times when I get to this point, I just feel like I've wasted so much time.

To be honest, maybe it's just because I suck at these kind of games. I tried liking it, the lore looks very interesting, the enemy design and building designs look often very cool to me, and the world design in general also looks pretty good to me.

But it's just so frustrating dying so very often. If I make progress than it's just very slow until I eventually hit a road block like a boss, which makes it very frustrating for me to continue.

I don't like the game at all, but I can see how others like it. As for me, I won't be finishing it anytime soon.

This being the case I rate this game poorly, but that's probably also because this is not my type of game. I'm not good enough as a gamer to play a Souls game.

It's a decent game. I don't get the hype that much though. There is basically no story. You just roam around the map without really knowing what's going on.

I wrote a 2200 characters review to be met with a 404 on submission and losing all I wrote.

I'll just sum it up. The 20-30 first hours in the game, it is pretty much a 10/10, which I'm guessing most of these review come from. But 70-80 in, anyone can see the flaw compound, and while its world building and graphics stay at a 10, the gameplay becomes obnoxious to say the least. I've

I've watched several streamers play the game and most of them seem to have their fun drop as the game goes and their only drive to finish the game is to satisfy their spectators. They are relieved when they finish the game but it is easy to see their bittersweetness regarding the game, not one of them reacted how anyone would react to a 9.6 rated game.

The game set itself high, and deserves most of the attention it gets, but a 10? not really. The first 20 hours I was "Wow, best game ever" too, but as you go on, it is more like "I wish I had more fun playing this".

First I would like to start by saying that giving this game a ten is not serious and giving it a 0 just because you are pissed at it is childish.
I have always been a very big fan of the Soulborne serie, I finished every one of them multiple times these are awesome games.
Elden Ring is a good game but its not great, for me its kind of a deception. Dont get me wrong the gameplay mechanic

Elden Ring is a good game but its not great, for me its kind of a deception.
Dont get me wrong the gameplay mechanic is good, the graphic are fine, some environments are beautifull to watch and I like the idea of an open world soul games, I always wanted that.

One major problem is, its not rewarding, the ennemies are not giving anything worth the time it take to kill them including the boss, its grindy to a point that it is boring just to level up once.
That make the random coop to help peoples killing their boss almost useless.
Many hard and massives ennemies are giving around 50 runes (souls) even if they take 5 minutes to kill, when you need aroung 10 000 runes to lvl up its dumb.
Thats why so many peoples are relaying on a stupid runes run like the boulder that drop around 2000 runes when you let it fall of the cliff, what a joke...

Is it me or almost every big monsters, mini boss and main boss have now a sniper attack and an aoe that smash the ground creating a blast of wind destroying everything around them for a 15 feets radius, so many boss are difficult just because of that, its cheap and lame.
There is a lot of giants in the first part of the map and they all do the "Dovahkiin" scream attack that can hurt you and make you fall from your horse even if you are 500 feets away from them.
Many monsters seem to have unlimited stamina and will lend an never ending serie of hits on your face and many of them seem to move like a ninja even if they are obese.

That bring me to the horse, since nothing is worth killing I found myself just running aroung with the horse avoiding the monsters who are not worth my time just to collect items and find dungeons, this make the concept of open world pretty boring to me.

Next the coop, that is my biggest deception in the game, its like the old system, you summon somebody in a restricted zone, kill the boss then they are kicked out of your game.
Me and my friends were mad when we found out that there was a massive fog gate stopping us from getting acces to an entire island just because I killed the boss at the end of the castle, this is pathetic, no evolution whatsoever even for a so call open world.
When you take a look at some great coop game like (Remnant from the Ashes) where you can coop with the same two peoples from start to finish without interruption, getting refreshing health, potions and ammunitions at the checkpoint togetter there is no excuse to give us the same old crappy coop system like in Demon Soul on the ps3.
    This is lazy and weak.

And the checkpoints make no sense at all, sometime you will find two checkpoints close to each other with nothing dangerous between them and sometime you will face hordes of dangerous and aggressives beast hoping to find the next checkpoint 10 miles further.

In conclusion Elden Ring is not bad but its not great, it could have been one of the best game ever but there is too many flaws and stupids concept to make it what it should be.
For me its a 7 that could have been a solid 9, sadly its not.

This is easily the worst game FromSoftware has ever made. Im a huge fromsoft fan and trust only them for day 1 preorders. I've platinumed all their games. Buy It really worries me that blupoint demon souls remaster can launch at 4k 60fps or near to it but elden ring can barely hit 30fps and often dips as low as 15 in sadly the areas where you need consistent performance. Ironically on ps4pro on a ps5 it runs at a solid 60fps but at luke 1800 using checkerboard and looks good. On ps4pro it's not so good sadly. I bought a ps5 for improved graphics but all I get is decade old issues which on pc ive left behind with a 3080 though I've Elden ring runs worse on a 3080 than on a ps5 lol So you can imagine the ps4 version is alot worse without that sad drive.

There is a whiff of cyberpunk about the game where fans are blindly supporting and conveniently ignoring the serious technical issues which also include a few progression stopping glitches / bugs and the occasional game breaking issue.

And post launch the patches are not addressing these issues. It still looks and runs like a...ps3 gen era game but tlou was ps3 and that ran and looked far better so...elden ring just looks ugly. Great art design but everything else is far from the beauty of sekiro or the grandeur of bloodborne.

The open world simply fails in 2022. If it was 2010 then I'm sure it be far more impressive as it has 2010 graphics. It's not remotely as good as botw or rdr2 which are games that existed before ER development even started. The latter alone is worrying but the large empty space which witcher 3 dlc would laugh at...isnt much fun to play. Yes You can explore but you'll only find Skyrim like identical copy and paste areas. Forget the wildlife of most open world games or npcs with compelling stories.

The George Martin element is inexplicably non existent making the game effectively a dark souls 4. The latter isn't a bad thing but it's not as good as ds3 in visuals / performance or gameplay so where does this leave us?

The game isn't suitable for noobs or non fromsoft fans. It's a game seemingly more for fan boys, prepaid journalists and shills to scream "goty!" while they wait for gameplay saving 'Patches' (sorry ;). It's not a bad game by any means but it has bad aspects to it or lazy maybe. Bloodborne launched in a rough state so this is nothing new but it's still not acceptable.
Wait for a sale a year from now when it's been fully patched. Eventually maybe 7-8 /10 but a 4/10 !t launch due to poor technical state :(

Once you sink your teeth into it, you realize it's nothing more than a turd dipped in fine chocolate. Block, hit, evade, parry, attack. On and on ad nauseum. Just a rinse and repeat of every other game From Software puts out.

Combat is still the exact same from Demon Souls back in 2009 with the smallest of additions, the Shakespearian just sounds dumb when you listen to a game like Soul Reaver and hear old style dialogue without trying too hard, it has lore but no story and some sidequests are just terrible

Then, you continue playing and starts to realize that the game is so unbalanced that hurts. Enemies with too many health, exhausting and loooong combos that kill you with 2-3 moves and a very aggressive behavior, that dont give you a chance to initiate a combo. Really, many enemies in this game have 10000 of poise, and they simply dont feel your hits, then proceed to obliterate you with 2-3 hits, even if you have 43-50 in vitality, alongside the fact that seems that every enemy in this game has some magic ou spell in their moveset, making them almost perfect in combat. All enemies and bosses uses the same strategy, they trick you by fake or prolonging moves that would look very fast and some of them are really fast that you have like 0.3 second to evade or take a literal combo of 30 moves that f*cking kill you.
The world exploration is literally not worthy, you might find some SUPER OP secondary bosses that would give you not enough runes and a useless item. Plus, they are almost the same and the dungeons are almost the same as well, super boring.
FromSoftware tried to create a "easy mode" by letting you catch "Pokemon Souls" and throw them to help you at combat and improve the usage of magic in the early-game, then they ruined the STR and DEX players that wont really care or would use this type of mechanic.
This game really needs a balancing or the majority of the players are not gonna enjoy it. I'v played DS1, DS2 and Bloodborne, they are hard, not unfair as this game is.
Miyazaki proved that he CANNOT create a open-world game and Dark Souls shouldnt be a open-world game. In all games the world is dead and empty of good people but full of boring enemies. Try again later, because this game was a failure.

Its buggy too, I had to restart several times to progress, at some parts there are obvious problems with performance, not talking about crashes. To me it is a senseless loop of grind. And to this grind there is not even a payoff. Loot is just a joke in comparison to how much time you spend into the game without any real progress. With Level 74 I feel as weak as with Level 12 - yeah, maybe I should have gone for a Mage instead of a MeleeFighter. Maybe I should waste my time for something else. So naaww... Not worth my time. As a game its playable, like all souls games, after bit of practice. But like with earlier FromSoft games, it suffers from lack of story and lack of direction and meaningful goals. You just try to get your hero stronger to beat the next boss around, just like you did in previous games, and that is all. Way too basic to last. And as far as cinematics go, they're all pretty clumsy when compared to the utterly brill cinematics of Ghost of Tsushima.
Would I recommend this game to anyone? Well, I loved the older Souls games, and this one, frankly, lacks the magic of them. So no. Wait till it is on sale, as by then they will have, hopefully, polished it up a bit as well.

After a steep learning curve in which, above all else, I learned to embrace failure, I discovered the real beauty of these games. Since then I’ve spent countless hours with each of the titles that preceded Elden ring and I can honestly say that it distills the best attributes of each of those games into something close to perfection.

Elden Ring is perhaps the most accessible souls game to date. While it can be immensely challenging from the start, the ability to explore a richly populated open world means that it’s not as relentlessly oppressive as the drudgery of reaching an impasse in previous titles. The revised combat and play forming mechanics imbue this game with a fluidity that makes it a joy to navigate, and the art style, visual effects and sound design are beautifully cinematic.

It wasn’t until I defeated the first major boss that I caught a glimpse of the immense scale of this gaming world. What’s more impressive is how organic and living the environments and encounters feel. I am truly awe struck by this sublime creation.

Admittedly I didn’t partake in much of the hype leading up to its release, and more or less bought it on a whim (usually I’d wait a few months until the game comes down in price); however, buying this game at launch is truly a worthy investment as the sense of community and discovery experienced by partaking in such a cultural phenomenon is nothing short of exhilarating. A word of advice for those finding themselves frustrated by its difficulty - try fingers, but hole.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought this would be a fun game. So I got it. Ended up being a brutally difficult leaving almost no room for fun. It’s almost impossible to actually find your way through things unless you played a dark souls game and know that things are just hiding against walls waiting to 1 shot you. The bosses are literally insane they can easily kill you faster than you can get one hit off with almost any weapon that isn’t small it’s just all in all a game that will make you hate it and will take much more time than it’s worth. So if you like games that give the bosses the cool move sets and the better weapons than by all means waste the 60 dollars and have fun either spending a full 30 min chipping away at a bosses health and practically just dodging the whole time or killing small enemy’s that roam to farm runes for weeks and weeks just to level up slightly (which makes almost no difference to anything except what u can use) so you can maybe kill your first boss and move on to the other 20+. There's of course the new horse gameplay and combat which is very fun, new ways to craft recipes and add signature abilities to weapons, a counter attack move which is incredibly useful for shield builds, and a lot of accessability such as control mapping. Similar to the rest of the Souls library, the game does share the same frustrating quirks like still getting hit through solid walls and the occasional bug or framerate drop (at least on last-gen platforms), but that's all outshined by the incredible presentation of the Lands Between, a place filled with so much mystery it's hard resisting the urge to discover and conquor everything there is to see. So here it is! 11 years after a real "Masterpiece" Dark souls 1, 13 years after the foundation Demon Souls. If you like it or not, but these games were the foundation of a whole new genre and next generations of video games.

So, years of experience in the same base of genre must bring out something really new and improved, right?

The Play style - Dark Souls 3 with more anime weapon arts. Some Enemies and Bosses require a specific way to play.
Weapons - There are over 300 weapons and 70 spells. How many do you need? How many of them are useful? How many do you test of the usefulness?
Animations, enemy and player models - every previous souls game (not bosses). And that's for real. Recycling at its finest.
    Crafting - forgettable
Story - forgettable. Very good idea, to bring to the Shakespearean cryptic story more of the same.
The chosen one going to kill or speak or interact with great ones like Miquella, Millicent, melina, miriel and rennala, renna, ranni and gowry, godwyn, godfry and morgott, mogh.
Remember Nito? Or Gwyn? Why do they make so much nonsense-people to forget about?
Then again, why should I care about the Story or Plot? The intro Scene is getting worse every Souls game, more cryptic and less care to make the plot interesting.
The open world - the Art style is more like High Fantasy. I expected to see elves and dwarves dancing around rainbows. And it didn't get better. No more Dark Fantasy than, I guess.
The open world itself is useless. I wouldn't call it empty, but it's more empty than previous titles.
It's boring to discover the same enemies in another color.
It's boring to ride around without a real destination. "But there is a destination, check the map!" Sure, but why do I need to have an open world then. Why not make smaller Areas with more detail. Even the "story areas" in this game have fewer details than the predecessor

I stop here. There are games (ubi-titles, cod, battlefield and so on) which got bashed because of the redundancy. Right so, I guess. But why not does anybody even mention it for the Souls games.

In this game there are the same negatives since demon souls: Camera sucks, Hit boxes sucks, all the same fighting styles (hit, block, dodge, cast spell) animations, graphically PS3, bad quest lines (if you miss a quest line or a NPC at the right time, your fault) and still nothing is shown or explained properly. I do not care if you are a hardcore fan, an option to turn tips on or off is not a negative thing and will nothing take away of the way you experience the game.
At least they worked on the very best part in every Soul's game: the platforming. Now there is a special jump button which make the char jump. And the horse. Super Mario at its best.

So, I had no fun playing this game. It was just too big and redundant and unimportant.
I still love playing Bloodborne somehow, even it has the same old flaws every souls game have

But If that's the future of gaming and a masterpiece, I am out.

game is far more of a headache than it is fun. I guess some people find grinding fun. I tried this game because I heard it had easier entry. have fun being frustrated.

    shameless steal from bandai.

Bought the game in thailand and English is not supported in the text, with no means to change the setting.

How backward is that ? especially when it was advertised as english supported on the text.
Extremely dissapointed. Stay away from this game in your are in asia.

I played every From title since Demon's Souls on PS3, when it was still an obscure game found in the back of some retailer's shelves.
I loved all of them, they always were beautiful, inspired, and challenging. But fair.

    But.
    There's a huge But.
It crossed the line which separates a challenging, yet fun, game, from a painful and frustrating experience.
After 105 hours I'm sick of being stunlocked by everything, from floor damage to arrows, even when wearing a Scale Armor.
I'm sick that every type of enemy, even dragons, keep jumping around like ninjas.
I'm sick of the near-infinite enemy combos that end up with a dodge or backstep /repeat.
I'm sick of the constant need of using an overall artificial difficulty which is nowhere near to the concept of Fun.
Yes, Elden Ring is where From games stopped being fun.

As a seasoned DS veteran even I had a rough time starting this game. But for those newcomers, those who give up early and those who "don't get it" - you need to understand that it's your second attempt where things really kick off. Typically in a souls game you get crushed, you lose your souls, you invest in the wrong stats, but on your second attempt when you "get it", and you whack your souls in to your favourite weapon of choice you will breeze through what was previously difficult - and that's the hook to these games.

For Dark Souls fans like myself - it's an odd start. It's unusual to have the wide open world, however everything else plays very much like Dark Souls. As soon as I found my first cave, learned how to summon and whacked a few points in Dex - I was hooked. You can open your map - find something that looks odd, whack a beacon there and travel. You will gladly get distracted by interests and oddities along the way - and every little settlement, cave and outpost feels meaningful, with great rewards.

You have to trust in From. They have your user experience at heart. You have to know that these guys excel at hiding away incredible locations, quests and items for you to discover, and you're just not going to see any of that with 10 hours of gameplay. People are too quick to pick up a controller and give up nowadays. In the 90's when you had one game a year, you'd explore every inch. And that's how you play this game. It's a marathon not a sprint!

Ultimately - it looks, plays and feels like Dark Souls in an open world, with lots of smaller interesting dungeons and bigger set pieces. No - the graphics aren't incredible, but the atmosphere is there. The souls series has never set out to be a graphical masterpiece - and I'd rather they keep doing what they are doing, producing compelling, stellar games - than bust out one boring yet graphically impression EA / Ubisoft title per year.

You might be daunted by the big open world, whether you're a dark souls fan or not. I know I was - but trust the process and let it sink it's teeth in to you - and you'll be coming back to drop a 9 in these reviews.

Best game ever made, especially if you're a FromSoftware fan. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Namco-Bandai's harebrained distribution choices for this game are what earns a score of zero. For some baffling reason this company decided to only release a Korean / Japanese / Chinese / Thai language version of this game for all of South East Asia and Hong Kong too. Even on Thai PSN, there isn't an option to even buy an English language copy of this game. Game tries too hard to make things difficult without any payoff. Even when you beat a boss or a large group of enemies you don't get anything that makes you feel like it was worth the hours you put in to defeat them. Games like WOW took hours, sometimes days to down a boss in a raid but there was always some juicy gear that dropped and had to be rolled on. You don't get that with this game at all. I cleared an entire camp that took me around 3 hours of stealth killing, running away, trying different tactics only to get something that my class of character can't even use. I killed a mob of 5 wolves and got a few bones from two of the wolves that I used to make one arrow out of. What's the point of putting a bow an arrow in the game if you never have arrows or have to grind 10 hours to get a quiver. Just senseless difficulty. Just a genuine torture to play. Game has no true content it just bogs the player down with senseless grinding.

The story is so silly and half baked, it feels like a teenager wrote the script. The graphics are laughable in 2022. And it's not a true open world game.

Phenomenonal. After 140 hours I beat it and I assume 90% of side content done to boot, it's just brilliant. Not my favourite Soulsbornekiro game but definitely my favourite game in the two years and one of my favourite of all time. Not without flaws but they can easily be ignored.

No matter how many studios try to replicate the formula, From Software is the only one that can deliver authentic Souls experience. [Issue#259, p.36]
