Great fighting game, reminds me of Street Fighter in a way. All fighters seem very equal, so a Yamcha vs Buu fight could be interesting. If you’re like me though, fighting games like Street Fighter lose the excitement after about 3 hours of playing. But if you love those style of games, you’ll love this.

The positives: With all three seasons of characters included, the character roster's number is great. They feel fairly similar an easy to switch between, but are not identical in gameplay - perfect. (if guilty gear has very idiosyncratic characters and bodukai tenkaichi 3 very similar, this game would have to be placed in between). It is fast-paced and damage is appropriate. The visuals, stages, character intros, finishing poses, dramatic endings, and special attacks are simply divine, sufficient, and faithful to the source material.

The Negatives: Unfortunately the story is lazily done, unpleasant to experience, and forgettable/generic. Secondly, only videl has a costume, whats up with that? and there are too many gokus, why not make them costumes (keep their moves of course, i mean the menu would look cleaner and less confusing without all these gokus). i would have liked more costumes and colors hobnestly - on this topic, one minor complaint: picking a character color for online matches is not easy, because it is not shown to you in the menu... Finally, It is difficult to get zeni. the shop is a grind.

Conclusion: Once you spend extra money on anime soundtracks and more characters. The game is an absolute joy. i keep telling myself its almost a miracle i have a game this fun and enjoyable and about one of my favourite series ever. Arcsystem works have delivered on the visual and combat aspects. The lobby is nice and so are the stages and bgm. The style of the cover artwork is beautiful, and i approve of that choice (Im looking at you, boring kakarot game cover art). The intro song could have been better but it is fine. The horrible story mode and the little personalisation available to players in game means that as a fighting game package, I must give this game 85/100.

The game's got superb graphics. Arc System made the right choice when they went back to cell shaded animations instead of the disgusting manga style animation we had in Ultimate Tencrapchi and Raging Blast 2. The music is entertaining but not as good as it was in Budokai 3. The story is pretty drab. The Z fighters have lost all of their power and have to regain it by fighting clones of themselves. Android 16 is back and the new Android 21 joins the fray. While its nice to see the Z fighters back in action together, the story is rather dull. The voices are not synchronized with the animation of the characters mouths. This seems to be something they'll never get right in a Dragon Ball game. However, the story mode isn't the bread and butter here, it's multi-player. There's a multi-player lobby where you run around as a little Chibi character. This is kind of cheesy because the multi-player lobby in Xenoverse was a lot cooler. You got a full size character there. Anway, you can play matches 1v1, co-op, story mode, and various other modes. You earn Zeni to buy costumes for you Chibi character. Multi-player is disappointing. The controls are cumbersome. An inexperienced fighter needs to merely button mash to get the upper hand while you are still trying to pull off a proper combo. An experienced player who has mastered the controls will keep you locked in a corner. Being able to move and get out of the counter or block will spell your untimely demise. It was easy to break being locked in a combo in Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3, Raging Blast and Xenoverse. Dragon Ball Fighterz really punishes the player. Super moves and Ultimates aren't easy to pull off in the heat of combat either. In addition, characters lack good super moves. For example, Adult Gohan will only do his Super Kamehameha if you pick Gotenks as a member of your team. Otherwise he'll do a Family Kamehameha. Even worse, you can't power up through the levels of super saiyan. Nope, you go super saiyan at the start of the fight and will not transform back to base, go super saiyan 2, or super saiyan 3. The only time Goku goes super saiyan 3 is during his ultimate, and it's one of the weakest supers of the game at that. You can get the base forms of characters like Goku and Vegeta, but you have to buy them. Budokai 3 came with over 40 characters, included transformations and fusion with Potara earrings out of the box. What DIMPS or Arc System really needs to do is make an updated version of Budokai 3 minus the Dragon Rush mode and a revised capsule system. Kind of like the one used in Infinite World. However, game developers are more interested in making a quick buck off a new DBZ title with the same old story and just doing things a little bit different from the last DBZ game. I will continue to wait for a true follow up to the Budokai series but it may be a long wait if not never. Expand

    3) Story is boring a fuk! Worst is the story cut-scenes lag and are not smooth. Very choppy cut-scenes take you out of watching the anime experience.

The fighting is solid and on point . Fast, frantic, fun but the longevity is something to take into question as most fighting games loose attention after a few months.

Bandai Namco has made this game for the fighting game fans, not "casual" players that only play the story mode or wants various single-player content, but simply for those who wants to play against each other by playing online or offline in a 3v3 tag system similar to the Vs franchise by Capcom.

That being said, the presentation of the game is by far the best aspect of the game, the graphics are extremely similar to the original material, meaning if you take a screenshot of the game, and put side by side by the anime, sometimes you couldn't tell the difference. The music of the game is also very good, not perfect or amazing, but well done.

The roster of the game is a bit disappointing, give there's only 24 characters in the base roster (which is few, given is a 3x3 game), but not only that, but there's many characters that feels the same, and very few of them feels unique (Android 21, Hit, Beerus), in addition to that there is some slots that could be utilized better (i'm looking at you Goku Blue, Goku SSJ and Goku Black).

Now to the gameplay aspect of the game, as mentioned it's similar to those familiar with games like Marvel vs Capcom, Guilty Gear and Blazblue, given the fact it was developed by Arc System Works, the same company that developed the last two games prior mentioned, meaning that mechanics like air dash, double jump, flashy supers and combos. And there's exactly where the game also starts to be a letdown, since it doesn't offer many defensive tools like Guilty Gear or Blazblue has, resulting in almost every character dealing blockstring situations, where if you opponent knows how to play, you won't press a button for like 10 seconds or more if you don't want to be "combo'd", there a pushblock mechanic, put it really doesn't work well like the games that has it like Marvel vs Capcom 3 or Under Night, where if you used well you could revert the situation. And the result of that is a game focused on pure offensive side, which is bad for competitive players.

The top 2 worse aspects of the game are the lack of a proper menu, since when you start the game you're put into a online lobby where you move around your character and select the options scrambled across the game that represents the menu options. And the major problem of this game as of the moment is a lack of functional online, since you get disconnect many times, you can't proper play in a lobby if your friends without some inconveniences, and sometimes you get get disconnected for no reason when you're playing a match, and the list goes on.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a good game, but it fails to deliver in some aspects like online play, lack of character variety and weak story mode, that compromises a game with excellent presentation and a solid gameplay (given a few flaws).

Update: I had given this game a 9 at the time it came out because I loved it, but now I have to update because there are some big problems I have had since.

The game really lacks technical play online, even in Competitive matches: opponents just spam combos because they are so simple, and while at first I liked this because it allows for more accessibility to newcomers, it allows for much less skill and use of mechanics in comparison to other fighting games. Combos do less damage than in other fighters (except for some ultimate moves that do WAY too much damage for being so simple) to offset the easy inputs, but it is still a spam fest. The combat basically consists of repeating combos and then doing aerial punishes at any slight opening.

Also, there should be a penalty for rage quitters. There isn’t one, unlike most other fighters, so there are SO many people that rage quit before they are even close to losing, which is super frustrating. Also, the matchmaking isn’t very good. I have 130 something wins right now, I don’t play a ton but enough to have that many, but I often get matched up against people with 300+ wins, and I get wrecked.

The core gameplay is still relatively fun, and I like the graphics, I just don’t love this game nearly as much as in the early stages, especially when there are so many other good fighters right now. I am not the best fighting game player, but I’d say I am above average, and thought that this game was balanced for newcomers and skilled fighters alike. But to me, there isn’t much middle ground here, just spamming by newcomers or average players, or extremely skilled players that destroy.

The first failures of the game is the balancing of characters, many of the characters are balanced in absurd ways, however this is positive, since if not, we could never have an equally worthy combat between videl (a normal and ordinary Earth almost without powers) and beerus (the god of destruction of that universe) but hey, this is not as serious as the following things. One of them is its story mode, yes, I know that fighting games should not be so demanding with the story mode, but games like for example: mortal kombat 11 and tekken 7 at least deign to try to write a good story to give reasons to fight the characters, which dbfz does with great difficulty because the story seems to be written by a fan who wanted to satisfy his deepest desires. And the last and most important thing, the Achilles heel of the game, the DLC characters. Dlc characters are always welcome in fighting video games, however, this one in particular has a problem, if you buy them for pleasure or other reasons, go ahead no one prevents you, but if you want to get into the competitive game, you have it clear kid , the game has 19 dlc characters, of which the vast majority are used in the competitive and some of them are almost mandatory to learn how to handle them if you want to enter here, but nothing happens, it is possible to dedicate yourself to competitive without having to go through box, unless you want a beating. In summary, despite its inordinate amount of strange decisions, the game is quite fun and can be enjoyed casually, in addition to the ultimate edition that brings 9 dlc characters is discounted which should be taken advantage of. There's no true defence, only parrying. That by itself wouldn't be so bad, however with the lack of tell in most moves, It becomes almost impossible to defend successfully (except for the computer, which manages to guard quite often). This makes the fighting extremely simple: just spam attacks until you manage to kill the enemy, which is why I feel most of the complaints about the fights just requiring button spamming to win are justified. This might change when reaching higher levels of play, however it results in a game that, to me, is fun to watch but not to play.

Dragon Ball Fighter Z is a fighting game and its a game that I think is very interesting but its also something that is not for me. It’s very similar to Capcom’s Marvel versus series where its 3 vs 3 and it’s chaotic. There is a lot going on and kind of hard to keep track of it all.

Its also a game that I probably won’t take the time to get into, its nothing personal against the game

I am not a very smart man and I have a hard time remembering long and complicated combos. Pretty much 5 moves is the longest combo I remember in a fighting game.

Like any fighting game, it’s hard to recommend unless you’re willing to put the work into it.

The loading screens and pop-ups are ridiculous. Going to the lobby gets you more than 5 pops and take longer to dismiss than an actual match. Local battle rewards aren't transferred, so it's broken.

The story is slow, short and has a time-filler system that lets you fight clones 95% of the time. There are Lootboxes that you can buy with in-game currency, but are also purchasable with real money if you don't want to grind. The lobby is the menu, and it's confusing.

Fighting is fast, and the button combinations for moves are too complicated to be enjoyable. It takes time before you master them each time, and is therefore not easy to get into if you just want to have a match with a friend.

Animations look good, but sadly are just as repetitive as the story mode. This is a €10 game that should include all the the characters. But it doesn't, so i can't recommend it. I give it a 5/10. It's underwhelming.

The soundtrack doesn't sound bad. But DBZ fans will be more than tired of hearing the songs of the game. I am not sure about how much music has actually been recycled from previous games, but it feels like it's the same music we have been repeatedly listening to since the good old Budokai days.

The story mode has been upgraded from static pictures with boring dialogue to slightly animated scenes with a slightly improved plot. Not enough, really.

Last, but not least, let's talk about the frame rate. Playing on a plain Xbox One or PS4 I have the feeling that the animations run at 10 fps at times. There is a lot of room for improvement.

I was excited about this game! And then I tried the Beta and I started doubting. Sadly for all, it feels like a disappointment.

Fantastic animations, movesets, story. Only problem is not enough time went into the mechanics at launch or after all these years unlike previous titles. Why play a game just to juggle opponents in the air to death with no means of escape. Why play dragonball if you don't want to pair off a final flash with with a instant transmission kamehameha?

Fighters is overall a solid game with features from previous dbz games coming together in a package that I hope future dbz games adapt. But that's where my praise for fighters ends, the story mode and lip sync for English voices were average at best, the lobby when connected online disconnects often, the game shouldn't be $60 consider the low character count, short story mode, and short arcade mode. The fact this game is receiving high reviews is disrespectful to old dbz games like tenkaichi 2&3 which gave you so much content and was more true to the dragon Ball anime. I'd recommend to buy this game at around$20-$30 for anyone not a 2d fighting game fan because this game is made for them instead of the dragon Ball fan. The counterargument is always that unique characters are best in a fighting game but dragon Ball is not your traditional fighting franchise if you want a fighting game with unique characters why not buy the other hundreds of 2d fighters out there why stamp the dragon Ball name to a game just so the people your targeting can have a crappy experience if they don't like the side scrolling 2d fighters? If your the casual dragon Ball fan there is not a lot of content there for you and the game will grow stale but 2d fighting fans will enjoy it. This is bandai namco's sad attempt to increase sales by getting dragon Ball fans to buy it by attaching dragon Ball to the game DON'T FALL FOR IT!!! And if Bandai is reading this give back to the fans and remake a game for the fan which is the tenkaichi series of games. Expand

ONLINE GAMEPLAY: Absolutely horrid. I will say there was very little lag though, but my god that will not matter. With the "Newcomer Friendly" gameplay, it makes it almost impossible to play. You're opponent will spam the same moves.... over.... over... and over.... Sure if you "get good" you will learn to block certain attacks. However, combating designed game flaws does not equal enjoyment. Maybe if health bars were increased, and space was expanded it would be ok.

However, you have two imaginary walls on each side that your opponent will use to their advantage. There is a reason this particular style of gameplay has gone mostly to the wayside. You will consistently run into people who spam consecutive 64 hit combos with stacked ultimates or they use the borders to pop you up in the air while switching characters. It is truly infuriating. Sure I could spam the same defensive move to counter it over and over again, but WHERE IS THE FUN IN THAT????

Its an absolute spam fest, which is truly a shame since there is so many cool animations and cool fan service in this game. You may have watched the trailers, you may have watched the developers play the game, but that will not be your experience.

Rarely you are matched with a similar player who wants to enjoy the game for what it is, and those can be some really fun match-ups. You will also be paired with weaker opponents which can be fun so that you can do whatever you want... but thats 1/4. There is no real "skill" to this game.

The pacing of the fight takes away from all that could be great for this game. You will play this game for 2 days, and then you will never play it again. So, if you have $60 burning a hole in your pocket, and you want to drop the Zeni to get yourself immersed in Dragonball... Then go ahead. If you are a casual gamer who doesn't care about DragonBall, do not get this game!

After you get over the voice-overs and different color uniforms... it will wear thin. If you want Dragonball nostalgia with a TON of fan service, please go play Dragonball Xenoverse II,

The game also sacrifices a great bit of depth for simplicity and homogenization of combos, as there is virtually no execution barrier once you get jump canceling down (which even a new fighting game player can in a matter of maybe an hour). Also, the amount of offensive options as that exist compared to the almost non-existent defensive options in the game make every character fall into the rushdown archetype. At least Xenoverse had enemy reading and viable ways to counter your opponant if you read them correctly... you know... skill. This is just a spam buttons until you start a combo and then don't let them out. There's no "mid combo" break. So what I mostly hate about it is that majority of your abilities are locked behind combo's where each character has only 2 abilities which can be used at any time. So compared to previous dragon ball games where you could spam freely abilities, you are very locked here.

it feels like all characters are similar to each other and that the abilities are just "filler" spells as everything is connected to combo's only.

A Dragon Ball fighting game that we’ve been waiting for since forever loosing hope along the way. It was designed with obvious deep understanding of the source material, visually it’s almost undistinguishable from the anime and it embodies the 'easy to learn, hard to master' rule, which makes it both interesting for BlazBlue veterans and accessible to newbies lured by the Dragon Ball license. The single player modes aren’t particularly engaging, and the broken online makes engaging in the multiplayer take way longer than it needs to. Those lucky enough to have a thriving local fighting scene are the real winners here until the servers are sorted out. FighterZ isn’t entirely my thing, but it’s easy to see that it’s as well-made, polished, and fanservicey as humanly possible.
